Good riddance to winter 2019!

SEAN HANNA DIRECTOR OF GOLF seanh@lochlloyd.com

I hope many of you were able to watch the Masters this year. What a great golf tournament to watch each year but when Tiger Woods is in the hunt, it’s even better. Tiger is without question the guy that moves the needle in the world of golf. People just enjoy watching him play, whether it’s to cheer for or against him. I am a “Tiger Fan” … he is my all-time favorite tour player and I consider him to be the Greatest Of All Time. The good news is, we don’t have to wait long for another major this year. The PGA Championship will be played in May, so let’s all get ready for a great PGA Tour season. Let’s go Tiger! Here at Loch Lloyd, the month of May is always one of the best golfing months on the calendar. Everyone is excited to start playing golf on a regular basis and, most importantly, the weather is usually very nice. So, break out the clubs and let’s start golfing! Four-Ball Match Play and the Individual Match Play events begin in May. Both of these events are season-long and open to both men and women. The Scotty is back in May this year and, as usual, looks to be a wonderful event. The Calcutta party kicks off The Scotty on Thursday night. If you haven’t ever attended the Calcutta, you are missing quite an event. I would recommend to NOT miss the party. Two days of golf follow, with the flight winners’ Shootout determining the Grand Champions of the event.

We’re excited to report that your Fitness Center just received three new pieces of equipment! The first is a Matrix ClimbMill which acts as a StairMaster; the other two pieces are Matrix Recumbent Exercise Bikes. These bikes are user-friendly and offer “walk through” access which is a feature that helps those with injuries easily get on and off the machine. Please come try out the new equipment and always ask if you have questions about using any of the equipment in the facility.

LANCE DARLING FITNESS CENTER DIRECTOR lanced@lochlloyd.com

We are also in the process of upgrading all the lights and ceiling tiles throughout the Fitness Center. Many apologies for the inconvenience caused by the installation process, but we are looking forward to seeing the improvements being made. Another enhancement coming to the Fitness Center this month is new carpet for the front entrance way, locker rooms and massage room. During the carpet installation, there will be a few days with no locker room facility access; however, we will have a restroom available upstairs for your use. Looking ahead to June, the parking lot will be striped. An email will be sent out later to let you know when that is taking place and where you’ll need to park during that process. Ladies, please be sure to sign up for our T.A.K.E. Self-Defense Training on Thursday, May 30th. This two-hour, hands-on program is available to any female member or Loch Lloyd resident, age 12 and up. Details about the program may be found on the next page. We strongly encourage all Loch Lloyd ladies and their daughters or granddaughters to attend this important, perhaps life-saving, event. Lance Darling Fitness Center Director

Dear Members, It’s hard to believe it’s already May! Golf is in full swing. With an exciting Masters tournament in April, spring flowers blooming and the golf course greening up nicely, the Golf Course Maintenance team is working hard to bring the property up to a standard that is second to none. The month of May brings Ladies’ Opening Day, The Scotty Member/Member and the start of Individual Match Play … it is an exciting time of year to be at the Club!

JEFF STEEN, CGCS DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE jeffs@lochlloyd.com

Please remain patient and keep in mind that your new management team brings forth an unmatched level of experience, but continues to learn all of the nuances and variables that the community and golf courses have to offer. I call the management team “new” due to the time that the current team has been on property: Jeff Steen, Director of Golf Course Maintenance: 7 months Grant Suderman, Golf Course Superintendent: 4 months Clifton Willis, Assistant Superintendent: 1 month Kelley Thompson, Assistant Superintendent: 1 month Justin Thomas, Assistant Superintendent: 1 month

Course Update WEED CONTROL Both the Tom Watson Course and Sechrest have received pre-emergent and post-emergent weed and evasive grass control. The results of these applications take a little time. We have also gone around the entire Tom Watson property to hand-spray areas missed by equipment such as pond/creek banks, bunker faces and other hard-to-reach areas. FAIRWAYS Fairways are starting to green up nicely but with soil temperatures still in the 50s, this takes some time. We anticipate that by the end of May, we will be in great shape. We still have many isolated areas of the fairways that we are monitoring closely as we could experience some winter kill. Please remember that it was a long, cold winter with over 26 inches of snowfall and many of the shaded holes (6, 16, 17, 18) had ice and snow cover for extended periods. The next few weeks will be critical and you may see an increase in cultural practices such as solid tine aeration to the Zoysia that is struggling to recover in these shaded areas and low areas with poor drainage. ROUGHS We have spent a lot of time overseeding the green surrounds so we can have a nice stand of turfgrass to these highly played areas throughout the entire golfing season. The remaining rough on the golf courses will take a little time to recover and fill in the weak, inconsistent areas left over from the fall of 2018. Please remain patient as these areas will fill in as the weather continues to improve. This year we will implement a more aggressive overseeding program in the fall of 2019 so that when we come out of winter, the thin areas will fill in quicker in the spring of 2020.

Page 8

GREENS, TEES AND APPROACHES After a successful spring aeration to the greens, tees and approaches, we continue to monitor green speeds daily and manage accordingly to the conditions, expectations and health of the turfgrass. I was asked recently about green speeds being slow. Based on the fact that is was still the middle of April, the need to be somewhat conservative coming out of winter and into spring is vital to maintain quality conditions for the entire golf season. Our goal is to have the greens consistently rolling smooth and true, mowing daily and rolling several times per week. The tees and approaches are in excellent condition and will continue to improve as we’ve overseeded all par 3 tee surfaces and will topdress accordingly. We’ve also lowered the height of cut to these areas in order to enhance the playing surface. Our goal will be to provide a firmer approach throughout the year.

SECHREST 9 This is a fantastic nine holes of golf that I encourage all to get out and play. We are managing Sechrest daily and will continue to do so throughout the year. Detail work is a constant focus! We recently experienced a 12-inch main line irrigation repair. This is a serious repair on a golf course and the team successfully and safely got the work completed. NATIVE AREAS The plan for the natives is quite simple: to remain patient. Having successfully grown many native plantings throughout my career, the process can take several years to become fully established. We have already made two applications for weed control, overseeded and fertilized. This will be ongoing and an area of focus for the team for many years to come. BUNKERS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS After recent work on holes 7, 8, 10 and 18 with “wrapping” Zoysia around the bunker, we look forward to hearing your thoughts regarding the look and playability of these areas. These bunkers traditionally failed to maintain consistency or keep a healthy stand of turf and were chosen as test areas this year. It will help us determine if future work for a complete overhaul to our bunker faces and surrounds is necessary. Superintendent Grant Suderman will be sending out a communication piece about bunkers and additional projects to keep you abreast of happenings throughout the property. In the meantime, here are some ongoing projects: sod work on 1 and 18; path work near 18 green; rock steps for ladies’ tee on 18; and removal and repair of fencing on holes 1 and 18. CART PATH RESTRICTIONS We are working on a communication piece to explain cart rules throughout the property. This is an ongoing topic every year but, moving forward, we would like members to adhere to the “off path” rules as best as possible so we may maintain the integrity of our beautiful course. Please scatter and stay on fairways when you leave the path and follow directional signage as you exit the hole. For 2019, holes 3 and 18 will be primarily cart path only on the Tom Watson course, along with hole 4 on Sechrest. STAFFING UPDATE Please join me in welcoming our newest members of the team, highlighted below. All three Assistant Superintendents bring a high level of experience, professionalism and enthusiasm to the Club. I am humbled to bring these gentlemen on board and look forward to the year ahead as we work together to develop plans and programs to make our Club the best it can be. Please feel free to stop me in passing or give me a call at 831.238.8318 if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely, Jeff Steen, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance CLIFTON WILLIS Cliff grew up in Liberty, Missouri but now lives in Kansas City with his wife, Mo, and three kids under three years old: Joseph, Jameson and Jonathan. A Penn State graduate, with a Bachelors Degree in Turfgrass Science, Cliff came to Loch Lloyd from Blue Hills Country Club where he was lead assistant superintendent for four years. For Jake Avery, waiting tables was at first just a means to fund an insatiable skiing habit. But the sophistication of the professional Sommeliers in the fine dining scene of Aspen captivated his interest and solidified his desire to learn more. In the summer of 2008, Jake traded in his ski boots for cellar boots and moved to the Napa Valley to work a harvest and dive head first into the world of wine. After spending a harvest running pump overs, shoveling pumice, and cleaning barrels, Jake enrolled in the Wine Business MBA program at Sonoma State University and began working weekends in the tasting room at Pride. While at SSU, he was honored to be the recipient of the first annual Don Reisen Memorial Scholarship and completed his degree in the Spring of 2012. Now working in National Sales, Jake is thrilled to have the opportunity to represent Pride all over the United States.

PRIDE MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS Pride Mountain Vineyards is a 235-acre estate with a wooden-beamed, modest-sized winery that blends smoothly into its mountainous surroundings and California heritage. One of the company's vineyards drapes across the gentle rolling crest of the Mayacamas Mountains, some 2000 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley. Being on the mountaintop provides many of the vines with desirable southern exposures, which is unique for a spring mountain property. The elevation also puts the vineyard above the morning fog that often blankets the Sonoma and Napa Valleys, with the result that the vines are bathed in sunshine from dawn to dusk.

This is the perfect event for all you pet lovers out there! Whether your favorite furry friend is a cat, dog, horse, hamster, ferret or other critter, here’s your chance to capture their likeness on canvas. Even if you have NO artistic ability whatsoever, artist Melissa Weinman with Happy Trees Painting Company makes it super easy by pre-drawing your pet’s image on the canvas ahead of time. Then, you’ll paint the canvas during the event with step-by-step guidance from Melissa. Don’t worry … with Melissa’s expert tutelage, you’ll be amazed at the finished painting you’ll take home and treasure.

Enjoy a glass of house wine, beer or well cocktail during class, on us! Member Charge Bar available all evening! $55++ per person

(includes class, take-home painted canvas, and a glass of house wine, beer or well cocktail to enjoy during class) All attendees must submit a photo of their pet no later than May 15th to allow Melissa time to pre-draw the image on your canvas. Please email your pet’s photo to amye@lochlloyd.com or bring your photograph to the Clubhouse and we’ll scan and email it to Melissa. Only one pet per photo please.

Space is limited to ensure Melissa can assist everyone with their painting so don’t delay … call 816.322.1022 today! A 7-day Cancellation Policy is in effect for this event. Any changes or cancellations to your reservation must be made prior to May 15th. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in applicable charges to your account.

The photos on this page are from classes taught by instructor Melissa Weinman. If they can do it … you can, too!

Thank you to all our members and their guests who attended Easter festivities at the Club this year! The Easter Egg Hunt was a hit with the kids (and their parents) and included crafts, games, visits with the Easter Bunny, a fishing pond and, of course ‌ the egg hunt. And, speaking of eggs, did you know that the wonderful ladies of Loch Lloyd donated their time, the eggs and the candy to fill more than 1200 eggs for the kids to find! We served 453 members and their guests at this year’s Easter Brunch. The buffet was brimming with beautiful dishes that tasted just as great as they looked. Everyone had a wonderful time and got to have photos with the Easter Bunny.

Caring for 10,000+ animals per year, KCPP works to increase pet adoptions and focuses on retention, lost pet reunions, identification and education throughout the community.
