MBDA, and is scheduled to be completed by 2017.
involved in the missile, and its firing post.
The MMP is a lightweight man-portable missile that can be installed on tracked and wheeled vehicles. It offers enhanced preciseness and considerable automation in striking targets. It is capable of destroying both stationary and moving targets.
MBDA began the MMP integration trials for the French Army under the risk reduction contract in June 2013. The fullrate production contract of the missile is expected to be awarded in 2014.
Sagem was selected for the development and production of firing post and infrared seeker for the MMP in June 2010. In December 2011, the French Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) awarded a risk reduction contract to MBDA. The contract is to confirm the technical options behind the critical equipment
MBDA carried out several tests on the MMP on a variety of surfaces to confirm the restricted space-firing capability of the missile. This capability ensures the safety of the missile system operator. The capability of the MMP's warhead to strike against a new generation of explosive reactive armour was also tested by MBDA. The company has also validated MMP's firing post ergonomics and architecture.

target set is listed as 2.5 km, which includes disembarked personnel or personnel under hardened cover, as well as modern tanks.
MMP firing unit The MMP missile comes with a completely digitalized firing unit. The firing unit is fitted with a latest generation Band 2 infrared (IR) and also includes a day camera and laser range finder. It is also equipped with a GPS and magnetic compass for direction and guidance. The firing unit weighs approximately 11kg (including tripod and battery). It works as an autonomous unit when installed with battery, but can be connected to an external power source if required.
  12
Each missile in its tube weighs 15 kg/ 33.07 pounds, while the separate firing unit adds another 11 kg / 24.25 pounds. Launchers will also be designed for armoured vehicles like France’s VBCI IFVs.
Once fired, communication between the missile and the firing unit relies on a fibre optic wire, allowing the operator to intervene if the missile needs a manual override.
FAM Report Sensors The MMP is installed with a dual mode seeker (infrared and optical) to guide it towards the target. The missile is fitted with Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) for calculating and reporting its velocity and direction. The laser range finder aboard the missile allows precise determination of the distance of the target. The missile is controlled by using the real-time data link. The MMP has three operating modes: fire and forget; man
in the loop; and lock-on after launch. It has a dual-mode seeker (IR/TV), is fully digitised, and features a multipurpose tandem warhead, two-stage main propulsion, real-time datalink, and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) firing capability. The system has a range of 4 km and can be fired from confined spaces. On December 2013, France’s DGA awards MBDA a contract to begin MMP production. The initial order is for 175 launchers and 450 missiles, which will enter service in 2017 and finish deliveries by 2019. The full
program for France will involve 400 launchers and 2,850 missiles. This year, MBDA has entered discussions with the Indian Army to offer its MMP to replace the MBDA MILAN 2T missiles in service with (and still in production for) the Indian Army. To bid the MMP, MBDA is teaming up with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), which is already the company's local partner for Indian production of the MILAN missile. The MMP being offered would be built in India to exactly the same configuration as the French Army's MMPs. FAM

Outstanding Industrial Cooperation Underscores MEADS Development Success Berlin, May 21, 2014 – At the ILA Berlin Air Show this week, MBDA and Lockheed Martin business leaders are marking 10 years of industrial cooperation on the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS). MEADS is a tri-national partnership between Lockheed Martin in the United States and MBDA in Germany and Italy. Ten years ago, the partner nations awarded a $3.4 billion contract to MEADS International representing the nations’ commitment to the development of the next-generation air and missile defense (AMD) system. Today, a mature MEADS has successfully completed all three of its flight tests, including a first-ever 360-degree dual intercept of tactical ballistic missile and air-breathing targets approaching from opposite directions. No other ground-mobile AMD system has demonstrated this capability. A comprehensive MEADS demonstration is scheduled in July in Italy, during which new battle management capabilities will be shown to military leaders. “The collaboration between MBDA in Germany and Italy and Lockheed Martin in the U.S. demonstrates the power of world-class engineering to solve problems warfighters have identified with current systems,” said Rick Edwards, executive vice president at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “MEADS is the most versatile, mobile and capable AMD system available today.” Developed to replace the Patriot system, MEADS capabilities meet future German, Italian and U.S. air defense requirements for NATO operations. The ground-mobile AMD system incorporates 360-degree radars, networked battle management, easily transportable launchers and the hit-to-kill PAC-3 MSE Missile to defeat the entire threat spectrum, including cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles and air-breathing threats. To reduce support costs, MEADS is designed to use half the manpower and less maintenance than current systems. To better ensure the safety of allied pilots, MEADS incorporates a sophisticated Mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe subsystem. “MEADS represents the most advanced and most capable AMD system, designed and developed to meet current and future warfighters’ requirements,” said MBDA Germany Managing Director Thomas Homberg. “It is essential to benefit from significant investments made by all three nations and to best use the developed system capabilities. MBDA Germany, Airbus Defence and Space, Lockheed Martin and MBDA Italy are fully committed and ready to support Germany in establishing its next-generation AMD system, as well as for other interested nations like Italy and Poland.” German industry is playing a vital role in the MEADS program. MBDA Germany is significantly involved in the development and integration of Battle Manager Battle Management Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (BMC4I) software as well as in the development and integration of the Multifunction Fire Control Radar (MFCR). This also includes work with Airbus to incorporate highly advanced radar modules. Also, the lightweight MEADS launcher was developed, assembled and tested by a product team working at MBDA Germany. As part of the know-how transfer from the U.S. to Germany, agreed to under the MEADS program, work started at the beginning of February 2014 on the installation of the System Integration Laboratory (SIL) on-site at Schrobenhausen. This, in conjunction with the potential link to the Freinhausen test centre, will provide MBDA Germany with special systems competencies in the air defense field. MEADS incorporates proven capabilities and is ready to replace aging Patriot systems around the world as nations turn to networked, mobile, 360-degree defense. MEADS is being offered for Poland’s Shield of Poland medium-range air defense system. MEADS is also an important next-generation product enabling German industry to preserve and leverage expertise in AMD. FAM

MBDA Demonstrates MMP Firing From Confined Spaces MBDA’s MMP (Missile Moyenne Portée) programme has passed a major phase in its development.
cept of ‘fire and forget’ with the facility for ‘man in the loop’ operation. This allows for the destruction of different ground targets with very high levels of precision at ranges of up to 4km while at the same time minimising the risk of collateral damage.
MBDA has just demonstrated the firing capabilities of its MMP missile in an operational configuration. The launch tests were carried out in a confined space in the presence of the operator, using his firing post, and the team leader. The success of these tests, carried out in MBDA’s test tunnel at its Bourges facility in central France, has confirmed the safety of use of the missile and its firing post. The launches were carried out under hot and cold climatic conditions in order to demonstrate optimal function in various temperature environments thus representing different operational theatres. In parallel, new warhead tests have confirmed the efficiency of MMP against targets representing latest generation Main Battle Tanks. Two rail firings were carried out at the beginning of the year at the French Direction Generale de l’Armement’s battlefield technology centre in Bourges.
The missile, which can be fired from a networked infantry firing post or from a vehicle turret, features a wide range of functions, one of which is firing on coordinates which allows non line of sight targets to be engaged. FAM
The first firing validated the functioning of the lethality chain at maximum speed, a necessary step in order to replicate an impact under real conditions. A target equipped with a latest generation reactive module provided the principal challenge for the second firing. The explosive reactive armour was detonated during the test and the main armour behind was pierced, thereby confirming the superiority of MMP’s lethality chain. MMP is a new generation land combat missile based on the con-

Terrestrial Reconnaissance and Exploration System (SERT) The characteristics of the battlefield of the future make it vital to have effective terrestrial surveillance systems which provide timely information about the terrain and the enemy, allowing Spanish Army units to execute their plans and offer an effective challenge. This means that the Armed Forces (mainly the Army) need access to resources which meet their existing needs both at technical and operational levels. Among other measures, this demands that reconnaissance units be equipped with the resources allowing them to perform their surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The objectives of the SERT project are: • Development and manufacture of a technological demonstra-
E
tor for a navigation, detection, identification and target location system using electro-optical and radar-based sensors and self-protection for Intelligence, Armoured, Field Artillery and Marines vehicles. • Development of algorithms for the integration of cutting-edge radarbased and electro-optical sensors with advanced target identification and location functions. • Full integration across the vehicle's technical systems (observation sensors) and tactical systems (command and control). • Development of an integrated night vision and navigation system for vehicles. • Development of a remote control system for small-calibre weapons.
• Presentation of the demonstrator's results on national and international forums
It’s a state of the art and highly efficient system, evolved from the advanced artillery observation system developed for the artillery observation missions in Spain. It also offers modularity, adaptability and all weather and day/night operation. The system SERT can carry out surveillance, target detection and identification in day/ night and low visibility conditions. Thanks to its integrated positioning sensors, the SERT has the ability to geographically locate targets, with extraordinary precision in an automated process, thus reducing the mission’s duration and improving the observer’s efficiency. Several countries have already shown their interest in the SERT system, reason why EUROSATORY will be the ideal show case for the delegations of these countries to have the opportunity of verifying its performances and wide range of applications.
