Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements of African Americans and an opportunity to recognize their role in US history. It began in 1926 as Negro History Week, established by American historian Carter G. Woodson, who was frustrated by the underrepresentation of Black people in American history. In 1976, every US president designated the month of February as Black History Month. Each year, an overarching theme is chosen to focus important conversations relevant to the times. The 2021 theme is "Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity," exploring the diversity of Black families past and present and how factors such as slavery, inequality, economics, and micro-communities play a role.
