The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the SecondTemple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. Hanukkah 2022 begins on the evening of Sunday, December 18 and ends on the evening of Monday, December 26. Hanukkah is also known as the Festival of Lights and is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games, and gifts. The holiday emerged as a celebration of the dedication of the restored Temple and is not mentioned in the Torah. The story of Hanukkah is told in the Apocrypha and is compared to the festival of Sukkoth. Hanukkah is spelled and pronounced with a guttural "kh" sound, and for Jews, it is a time for family, community, and religious observance.
