The2022Atlantichurricaneseason–runningJune1throughNovember30–is offtoasurprisinglyquietstart.Forthefirsttimeinsevenyears,notasingle hurricanehasformedintheAtlanticBasinasofmid-August.
Sofar,2022hasproducedonlythreenamedstorms–thelastbeingTropical StormColin,whichwasdowngradedtoadepressionanddissipatedoverNorth CarolinaatthebeginningofJuly
Thisseasonpresentsastarkcontrastto2021–whichhadalreadyrecorded sevennamedstormsbyAugust13–and2020–thebusiesthurricaneseason onrecord.
Butdon’tgetcomfortablejustyet.Althoughforecastershavedowngradedtheir outlooks,they’restillpredictingan“above-normal”hurricaneseason.
