Style
Expressions
S “
tyle” is one of the most overused words nowadays. However, what does the word mean, really? Most commonly used to refer to an appearance of something, style is so much more…a certain je ne sais quoi that can be elusive to describe. For the month of November, we dedicate the issue to everything with style…
In “Hidden Gems”, we go on a stroll in one of the world’s most stylish cities-Paris-as Daniela Bonetto takes us along a designer trail leading to five of the best galleries in the city. Staying in the city of love we also visit the newly opened museum dedicated to the late master of fashion, Yves Saint Laurent. With another museum just opening to honour the style master in Marrakesh, we give you the lowdown on which one is better. Back at home we feature two of Egypt’s hottest up-and-coming brands: Jewellery brand Hayden & Co., whose designs are frosting stars on the red carpet, and Christine Massarany as we showcase her debut collection within our pages. Once you have style, you have got it-no matter the age. In “Timeless Beauty” Kate Dannies chronicles the rise of mature stars such as Lauren Hutton and Catherine Deneuve as they take centre stage in the fashion and beauty scene. Enjoy the issue, Hind El Ramly editor@flair-magazine.com

Posh Hire The Soirée Savior
We all know the drill. Wedding season is closing in and you are already panicking that you don’t have enough new and cutting edge dresses to soirée in style. You could either drop all your savings on new outfits or you could look for your next dress through an online retail hiring platform. With a digital revolution taking over our lives, its no surprise that the fashion industry is changing, and Egypt has finally caught on the online fashion fever.

This is the driving factor behind Egypt’s latest online hiring platform, Posh Hire, which just launched, granting women accessibility to a wide selection of evening and cocktail gowns to accommodate their many occasions and social outings.“Who wants to be seen wearing the same dress twice?,” said Passant Morshedy, founder of Posh Hire. “And with social media being in full gear, once that Instagram picture goes up, the dress is burnt.”, she adds. It doesn’t hurt as well that hiring and renting dresses is also an enivironmentally sustainable method of shopping.
At first glance the Egyptian market might appear reluctant to embrace the fashion hiring trend with open arms, however Morshedy is keen on breaking what she calls the “taboo” of hiring dresses. She cites a study that claims that the market value of eventing gowns in Egypt is around five billion EGP to show the potential for her budding business. “I want to create a trend out of hiring dresses,” she said. “You own a dress, you wear it and then it just sits in your closet. Why not reinvest it?” Posh Hire’s aim is to make sure girls look lavish for every occasion, not once settling for a dress they’re not convinced of. Morshedy wants women to experience the thrill of wearing high-end clothing, freshly dry-cleaned and pressed, without feeling the guilt that comes with spending a fortune on a one-time occasion outfit. This dynamic proves to be benificial for all parties, whether the person who hires out or the one who hires.
29
So far The platform is stocked with dresses from Egypt’s most loved designers, including Rafik Zaki, Iman Saab, Nehal Khalifa and Kojak. The platform also includes international favorites, such as Ted Baker, Guess, Asos, Missguided and Sherri Hill. Going forward “Posh Hire” aims to collaborate with the international designers in Lebanon, Dubai and the rest of the MENA region and expand regionally. Offering a more complete service, the online platform doesn’t only offer hiring, but also has the options of purchasing a dress or swapping it out for another dress. And to complete the look, clients can also choose from a selection of jewelry and accessories, offered by Djewelled and Sandbox, which will be available for purchase through the website.

A Glamorous Affair Hayden & Co.
We have all gawked over the gorgeousness of local and international stars all glamed up on the Gouna Film Festival red carpet with their dazzling couture and perfectly coiffed hair. And the spark that completed many of the starlets’ looks? That would be Hayden & Co.’s jewelry pieces, one of the newest and hottest brands in the Egypt jewelry scene.
Lisandra Silva
Catrinel Marlon Hayden & Co., was founded by Shaddy Elian who had noticed a demand in special occasion jewelry so he decided to fill a gap in the market with his jewelry creations with accessible price tags. This desire came out of his belief that all women deserve to feel special.
Salma Abu Dief
He has recently launched the second edition of his debut collection titled “Love Wear”. The Love Wear collection features seven unique sets, five necklaces, four rings, four earrings and two bracelets. The jewelry is hand-made in Belgium from gold and silver plated rhodium, and is encrusted with Swarovski crystals.
Still, Elian maintains that a woman can style his pieces for the day as much as night, envisioning that women can wear Hayden & Co. creations to business meetings as well as special nights. He views his jewelry pieces as a love affair between the designs and the woman wearing it. It’s the final touch that completes a woman look. It’s luxurious in a way that it can be styled in a variety of ways and occasions. The best aspect about being a designer? “Seeing the joy in my clients’ eyes when they wear my pieces to complete their looks” Elain expresses.

First Impression Christine Massarany
The latest designer to grace Egypt’s fashion scene is Christine Massarany who has recently released her inaugural collection. Inspired by nature, Massarany’s semi-couture collection started with a single creation and bloomed into 11 pieces varying between dresses, jumpsuits and rompers. Each design is unrepeated, signifying the exclusivity of the Christine Massarany label. When Massarany was taking her first steps into fashion design, she entered the ‘La Mode a Beyrouth’ competition, where she placed among the top eight finalists. The dress she created for the competition was inspired by the oyster mushroom, which Massarany thought was delicate and fascinating with all its intricate details and interesting earthy hues. She then decided to extend the dress into a collection where ruffles and earthy tones take center stage to resemble the beauty and details of the oyster mushroom, which stands out as it adorns its surroundings. The inaugural collection features earthy
tones of champagne, gold and silver, in addition to white. To mirror the formation of the oyster mushroom and its grouping as well as the little details underneath its big fan or oyster-like cap, Massarany focused on ruffles, draping and exaggerated sleeves in the collection.
constant editing of her ideas in order to be true to the mood and the style of the collection. She describes the collection as a daring one with a variation of offerings (long dress, short dress, rompers, a jumpsuit, a crop top with a trouser, and a skirt with a top).
The result was a slight 1980s feel. The choice of fabrics was also dictated by Massarany’s desire for her pieces to be unconventional. That’s why the selection includes brocade, chiffon-silk and tulle.
“I always design my pieces to stand out,” Massarany said. “Wherever the Christine Massarany woman would go, I want her to be the one who stands out and whose choice of dress people talk about. That’s why I design statement pieces.”
Massarany is proud of creating a the collection’s pieces as they have a harmony together. She achieved that through

Timeless Beauty Mature Women Take Center Stage
Fashion has an issue with age, but in recent years there has been growing pressure on brands to diversify and we are loving the results so far. The days of casting twenty-something, size four, white models are certainly not over, but fashion labels are beginning to be more representative, especially when it comes to using older models. When you consider that people over the age of 60 make up the fastest growing group of consumers in the world, not reaching out to this peer group is bad for business. That is particularly true of the luxury space where brands like Celine, Louis Vuitton and Kate Spade have all cast women ‘of a certain age’ in their campaigns for past seasons. In 2017 this trend continues with stunning new campaigns featuring some amazing women. By Kate Dannies
Lauren Hutton for Calvin Klein At 73, Lauren Hutton is having one of her biggest fashion seasons yet. Hutton who began her career as a model before turning to acting, has made a low-key return to modelling in recent years. After walking arm in arm with Gigi Hadid on Bottega Veneta’s runway last year and starring in the Italian house’s campaign, she’s now taking on the mantle of “underwear model” — a rare role for a 70-something — for Calvin Klein Underwear. Hutton is no stranger to the printed page, having appeared on the cover of Vogue more often than any other woman in the magazine’s history. The ad sees Hutton modelling lingerie alongside the likes of Kirsten Dunst and Rashida Jones. The positive reception of the campaign marks progress in fashion industry ageism--when Christy Turlington Burns did a similar campaign four years ago in her forties it made headlines, while Hutton’s reprise as a mature lingerie model is being taken in stride.
Catherine Deneuve for Louis Vuitton French silver screen icon Catherine Deneuve, 73, made her film debut in 1957 and first came to prominence in Jacques Demy’s 1964 musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, before going on to star in tens of other iconic productions. She was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for Belle de Jour, and the Academy Award for Best Actress for Indochine. Deneuve brings a touch of sophistication to Louis Vuitton‘s Fall-Winter 2017 advertising campaign. Deneuve appears alongside Jaden Smith, Riley Keough, and other of the moment stars. The campaign, shot in Florida by Bruce Weber, was dubbed “Series 7”.
Isabella Rossellini for Sies Marjan The legendary Isabella Rossellini, aged 65, an Italian actress, filmmaker, author, philanthropist, and model, is featured in the Sies Marjan’s Fall 2017 campaign. The daughter of the Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman and of Italian neorealist film director Roberto Rossellini, she is noted for her successful tenure as a Lancôme model, and for her roles in films such as Blue Velvet (1986) and Death Becomes Her (1992). Rossellini also received a Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance in Crime of the Century (1996). In the pictures, Rossellini dons a striking electric blue velvet button-down, as well as a hot pink fuzzy sweater. Other glimpses of the menswear include a mint-hued suit, purple trousers, a shaggy teal sweater, and a pair of rust-colored flare pants paired with a dusty pink turtleneck.

The iconic Gabriella Crespi inspired Tory Burch’s designs for the Fall 2017 season. Crespi, who recently passed away at the age of 95 was one of the most renowned Italian furniture designers in the 20th century. Crespi’s life inspired “from Milan to India, cosmopolitan to bohemian chic. We paired crisp tailoring and fluid shapes, streamlined and textured fabrics, geometric patterns and rich florals and embroideries. Crespi’s work and her love of natural and mixed materials influenced our accessories: carved-wood platforms, inlaid minaudières and porcupine-quill earrings.” designer Tory Burch said about the collection

Silhouettes A journey from Italy to India translates into a collection that blends chic cosmopolitan tailoring with bohemian ease. Polished jackets, A-line skirts and a classic trench balance drawstring waists and caftans. Volume is seen throughout, from free-flowing dresses with billowing sleeves to pants with a subtle flair
43
Palette A classic palette of burnt sienna, navy and ivory gives way to the vibrant colors of India-saffron, masala and gold
Prints & Patterns Decorative florals, woodblock motifs and patchwork play off of geometric patterns and an elliptical chain print

Fabrications A harmony of materials puts the focus on contrast: Gold-foiled leather appliquĂŠs on linen; lace borders on featherweight silk; and suede pieced on transparent plastic. Maharaja-jewel embellishments, seedbeads, threadwork and a lurex jacquard add subtle shine, texture and dimension, while smocking and pleats bring movement
Accessories Organic shapes and natural materials meet modern concepts in porcupine-quill chandeliers and a sculptural pendant inlaid with a mosaic of shells. The mix carries through to shoes, from scalloped wood platforms and feminine loafers to springbok mules with a leather medallion framed in fur

PERSON OF FLAIR
Maya Nassar’s Fitness Empire Regional fitness celebrity Maya Nassar started her fitness journey like many of us-with a desire to get fit and healthy. After leading an unhealthy lifestyle for years she finally decided to turn her life around. However after reaching her goal of losing weight, and where many would have stopped and been happy with the results-Maya went even further. She turned her personal journey into a fully-fledged fitness empire. Over the years she has amassed over six trophies including the first place at the 2014 Pure Elite UK Championships in the bikini category. More recently she has launched a website, a fitness application, as well as her very own gym which opened earlier this year. With a TV show on MTV Lebanon as well, we chat with the “Bikini Babe” and the newly crowned mother of a one-month old about fitness, pregnancy and more…
MAYA’S TOP FITNESS TIPS 1. Lift Weights
Many women falsely believe that they will bulk up or look like man if they do, however this is a myth as women do not have enough testosterone in their bodies to become masculine. Weightlifting is the best way to shape and tone your body and the quickest way to burn fat.
2. Avoid Low Calorie Diets
Low calorie intake diets that require you to cut out a major food group such as carbohydrates should be avoided. The best diet to follow is one that is well-balanced and contains healthy, natural and unprocessed food. A diet must be sustainable in the long run and must not be restrictive. In order to lose weight, we simply need to eat a healthy diet of sufficient calories and burn more calories than we consume a day.
3. Avoid Diet Pill Scams
“Diet pills” and other form of diet scams that promise results with zero to no effort should not be trusted. These do not work and are entire scams. The only way to get into shape is through diet and exercise.
What initially got you into fitness?
After living a very unhealthy lifestyle in my early 20s, I had gained a significant amount of weight and became very insecure. I did not eat healthy and never did any exercise. I hit rock bottom and used to get sick very often, suffering from asthma and having difficulty breathing by just going up the stairs. When my jeans no longer fit and stopped at my knees, I decided I was responsible for my own lifestyle and had to do something to change. I did not want to be this way. That was my turning point when I joined a gym and changed my eating habits overnight. I researched and educated myself on the subject of fitness and what I needed to do to get into shape. As a result, I became healthier, happier, more confident and created the best version of myself.
What are some of the myths you want to dispel about fitness and pregnancy?
The first myth is that exercising is unsafe or dangerous during pregnancy. I lifted weights and exercised until the night before I gave birth. Lifting weights has helped to control my weight gain during pregnancy and also kept my skin tight so luckily I didn’t get any stretch marks. The second myth is that a pregnant woman should eat for two. During pregnancy, a woman does not need more than 300 to 500 extra calories a day.
Why do you participate in fitness competitions and challenges?
After losing all the weight I gained, I decided I wanted to reach the ultimate goal
and this is when I decided I wanted to compete in fitness modeling competitions. I wanted to push to my limits both mentally and physically and go from being in the worst shape of my life to being in the best shape of my life. I was too insecure to walk on the beach and wanted to show off my physique on stage next to other fitness models. Competing has taught me many important lessons. It taught me that there is no such thing as failure, as I told myself that as long as I reached my best and participated, then I was a winner. It was not about winning or losing, though I am lucky to have won a total of 6 trophies over the last few years.
Tell us about your “Start Living Right Fitness” website and application…
I created a website called Start Living Right to provide others with free information to help them live a healthy lifestyle. I wanted to help anyone like my old self who was struggling with their weight and did not know how to start. My website contains advice, diet plans and exercise programs and was very well received. This inspired me to launch a mobile application of my website with more added features, including animated exercise illustrations, a calorie counter and more. My application is free download by searching for “startlivingright” in their smartphone stores.
business owner and that if I can get into shape, then they can do it too. There is nothing holding them back.
What encouraging words would you give to people who want to start out their fitness journey?
The first step is to have the mental willpower to get started and to be willing to put in the hard work it takes. Getting into shape is a mental challenge and as long as they have the right mindset, then they will see the results they want. The second step is to follow a proper diet and exercise program. This can be by consulting a fitness professional or by doing their own research. My website and mobile application contain diet plans and exercise programs that anyone can follow and is tailored for different goals, whether someone wants to lose weight or build muscles. Anyone can get into shape if they want it bad enough!
What are your ambitions and upcoming plans for the future?
My main goal is to enter a fitness modeling competition next year. I want to show other women that I am a mother and

À La Carte on Ponte Vecchio Every year Italy comes first as a favourite travel destination in the world, and with good reason. And if you are visiting Italy, it is hard to beat Florence, a city of immense art, culture and history. And if you are visiting Firenze, it would be a crime not to stay at the Four Seasons. Housed in two stunning Renaissance buildings and surrounded by 11-acres of private park, this hotel, or resort, was once owned by Pope Leo XI, the shortest serving Pope in history (26 days). But apart from sleeping in the former papal residences there are further memories to be made here. Amongst the numerous offerings, the most stunning is totally exclusive to the hotel, and reason enough to stay here. The “Golden Dinner on Ponte Vecchio” is the trump card for those celebrating an anniversary or getting engaged. Arguably the world’s most famous bridge and a signature highlight of Florence, the hotel has contracted the privately owned rooftop terrace of the highest residence on the bridge, where it offers a private butler served dinner for a party of up to eight in a stunning location that has no rival, with both spectacular sunset vistas and a sweeping view of the bridge. fourseasons.com/florence
Pay To stay Behind Bars If Shawshank Redemption was your favourite movie back in the 90’s then get ready to spend the night behind bars a la Tim Robbins. Designed to mimic jail, enthusiasts can now spend the night in this hostel’s 8 square meter “cells” for as little as £30 per night. Sook Station is Bangkok’s prison-inspired hostel which throws its guests, erm, inmates into a cell for the night and the budget friendly overnight stay mirrors what a prisoner would otherwise face. The rooms have metal gates with rods, bunk beds, common toilets and light-out curfew. At check-in the guests are given black and white pyjama and have their mugshot taken. Rather than being given a key each traveller is assigned with an inmate number which gets them in and out of their cell. The compound is also secured with barbed wires, giving off the vibes of a correctional home. sookstation.com

Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour Vietnam is a country of breath-taking natural beauty with a unique heritage. It is astonishingly compelling and so exotic that travelling around the country is addictive. And nothing portrays this more than in its food scene. The flavours, aromas and strange (sometimes questioning) ingredients makes a street food safari a must whilst in this part of the world. Hanoi’s Old Quarter street markets are the best place to walk along with a local guide who’s passionate about food, and discover the exotic flavours of Vietnam with fellow food-lovers. Tours are organised to sample fruit, meet hawker and sample local specialties like pork crepes. Another must on any foodie’s to-do list is to visit Hanoi’s largest covered market, Dong Xuan. Breathe in the aromatic scents wafting from street hawker stalls selling everything from exotic fruit to seafood. viator.com
Real-life ‘Narcos’ Tours Netflix’s Narcos not only has tripled our screen time but is also influencing our travels to the once off-limits Columbia. Once upon a time a no-go tourist option for travellers due to its violence, holidaymakers are now flocking to the once violent South American country thanks to the Netflix hit series. Today tourists no longer have to worry about the violence caused by the drug trade and a half-century-long civil war because Colombia now welcomes more than 2.5 million visitors a year. Today, people from around the world flock to Bogotá for its arts and high-minded food scene, Medellín as it emerges as a beacon of urban development, and Cartagena for its swanky hotels and rum-drenched bars. ‘Narcos Tours’ have now become the city’s biggest asset as operators cash in on its biggest asset: Pablo Escobar’s life. Galleries to Explore in Paris By Daniela Bonetto in collaboration with APR
Édith Piaf knew best when she sang Le Vie en rose. The lyrics tell about the joy of finding true love which is exactly the sensation that comes to mind when strolling around Paris along a designer trail leading to five of the best galleries in the city.
HUGUES CHEVALIER [134 boulevard Haussmann, 75008] Reinventing Art Deco furniture since the beginning of the 80s, Hugues Chevalier has made a name for themselves among designers of high-end contemporary furniture design. Today, their artisanal savoir faire and French aesthetics remain embedded in the brand. The recently redesigned showroom creates spaces that are based on everyday living areas such as the kitchen, bedroom, living room and office spaces, bringing together the new ‘lifestyle’ spirit of the brand and allowing clients to easily imagine Hugues Chevalier’s creations in their own homes.
D. PORTHAULT [5 Rue du Boccador, 75008] Once upon a time in the Depression era, husband and wife Daniel and Madeleine Porthault started a line of colourful, daintily-patterned linens at a time when sheets were never anything but white. Although times have significantly changed and many linen labels have since emerged, D. Porthault is the only one to hold true to its tradition of screen-printing its patterns by hand. The signature designs are displayed carefully in the all-white décor of the Boccador boutique which is housed in a quintessentially Parisian building.
ROUGE ABSOLU [3 Rue des Sants-Pères, 75006] Rouge Absolu, the bespoke interior design and decorative arts studio, has opened a stunning new gallery to showcase its gorgeous pieces. Geraldine Prieur, a refreshingly unconventional interior and furniture designer, has created an enthralling atmosphere that reflects her personality as she exquisitely mixes fashion and the decorative arts.
59
POUENAT [22 Passage Dauphone, 75006] Situated in the heart of Sant Germain des Prés, this gallery embodies the Pouenat design philosophy, offering its technological expertise to allow designers to showcase their talent. This year, the brand presents luxurious and bold pieces situated between art and design. Whether minimalist or ornate, each piece evokes a timeless elegance – a perfect harmony between tradition and modernity.
GALERIE NEGROPONTES [60, rue de Verneuil, 75007] A stone’s throw away from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the gallery combines art, design and innovative savoir-faire. Run by lifelong friends Sophie Negropontes and Hervé Langlais, Galerie Negropontes’ ambition is to revive the tradition of French Decorative Arts with a contemporary vision. Their gallery pieces have the rare ability to serve more than its primary function, leading to a quietly powerful design presence, that is often sculptural, always elegant and approaching iconic.

Tofino
The Beach House
Perched on the westernmost edge of Vancouver Island, Tofino is one of Canada’s favorite recreation destinations, where extreme weather conditions draw surfers and storm watchers year round, from all over the world. This house was to “grow” out of the magnificent site with its sculptural windblown trees, and provide a focus for beautiful views.
63
The beach house, designed by Seattle based Olson Kundig Architects, is filled with light on the south side facing the ocean, and insular and protected on the other side, paneled in dark, rich wood. Glass walls open the living area to panoramic views of forest and ocean, while two fireplaces on either end anchor the space and provide a feeling of cozy refuge. There are no columns or interior structural systems to obscure the view; instead, it feels almost like you are outdoors in a big, open space. The kitchen is in the center of the house—the owner loves cooking and entertaining friends. A small garden courtyard is a microcosm of the rainforest, and the master bedroom looks across a reflecting pool into the woods. “The beach house is essentially one single room, with the emphasis on feeling connected to the ocean and the surrounding woods. Jim Olson, Design Principal explained.
65
Cantilevering the house from its base provides space for ferns and beach salal to grow underneath the glass flooring that runs around the perimeter of the main room, giving the house a sense of floating above the forest floor. The warm, natural tones of the interior take inspiration from Tofino’s coastal forest, and are punctuated by pieces from the owner’s striking contemporary art collection. Artworks were incorporated into the design of the home, with the fireplace walls specially designed to accommodate paintings by Sam Francis and Diego Singh. We designed a collection of furniture specifically for the house, including a walnut sofa built into the hearth of one fireplace, to complete the interior environment.
Tightknot cedar ceilings in the living area and rich walnut casework in the open kitchen to the rear provide a sense of grounded warmth, which extends to the back bedroom with its dark teak paneling. Here, a vista out over an elevated deck and long reflecting pool offers a second opportunity for views of water and woods. This house was sited so carefully that only one tree had to be removed during construction, and a green roof above the garage continues the home’s natural integration. A nearly continuous line of clerestory windows above the living area required an innovative engineering system for the cantilevered roof, which is held up in only two places by the concrete chimneys. As a result, the roof appears to be floating above the house, which itself is much like a glass boat gliding over a sea of salal.
67
Tofino feels like the end of the world. It’s as far as you can drive north, at the end of the Pacific Rim highway. Across the channel is Felice Island, where a lot of people kayak and camp. The town has two seasons; summer is surfing, winter is storm watching. “This house, in the middle of a primeval forest, serves as a cozy refuge from the harsh winds coming in off the nearby ocean”. Olson adds.

YSL Museums Open in Paris & Marrakech
In October, two museums opened dedicated to the work of Yves Saint Laurent. The first, in Paris, is housed in the historical couture house at 5 avenue Marceau, an hôtel particulier from the Second Empire where the French designer worked for almost 30 years. The other museum is located in another city close to Saint Laurent’s heart—Marrakech. Both spaces will house garments, original design sketches, and various YSL-related paraphernalia from the 5,000-pluspiece collection of the Fondation Pierre Bergé. The only question left to answer is: which one should we visit first? By Kate Dannies
PARIS Legacy of a Legend The Paris museum is housed in a re-designed space that served as Yves Saint-Laurent’s couture house for 30 years. The museum will provide insight into the designer’s influences and work process. Set designer Nathalie Crinière and decorator Jacques Grange, both long-time collaborators of the Fondation Pierre Bergé, have designed the exhibition spaces to recreate the original atmosphere of the haute couture house. Saint Laurent had his first couture show in 1962 and quickly started archiving his work. Thanks to this early vision, the collection is unparalleled in the world of high fashion. It comprises 5,000 haute couture garments, including the famous Mondrian dress and Van Gogh-embroidered jackets, 15,000 accessories. such as hats, jewelry, and shoes, as well as thousands of sketches, collection boards, photographs, and objects. The museum displays more than 50 works of couture created by the designer from 1974 through 2002, in addition to accessories and never-before-seen sketches, photographs, and videos from the fashion house’s archive.Visitors will be able to admire the collection, displayed through retrospectives and temporary exhibitions, visit Saint Laurent’s studio, walk through the former haute couture salons, and just explore the immense heritage the designer left. The main ground-floor gallery will feature exhibitions on specific collections, beginning with Mr. Saint Laurent’s 1962 debut. Upstairs, another gallery will focus on themes. The first is Saint Laurent’s design dialogue with art: ensembles inspired by van Gogh, Matisse, Mondrian and Picasso. Tours will conclude with a walk through Saint Laurent’s studio.
73
MARRAKECH YSL’s Second Home A state-of-the-art fashion museum honoring his oeuvre will open just steps from the Jardin Marjorelle, the villa’s expansive garden. Saint Laurent and Bergé first visited and fell in love with Marrakech in 1966, and on the flight back from their first trip there, they already had the paperwork for a house they wanted to buy. They went back regularly, and it was in Marrakech that Saint Laurent imagined his collections. The new, 43,000-square-foot building, designed by the Paris-based firm Studio KO, will house thousands of articles of clothing and haute couture accessories, all carefully selected by Pierre Bergé, Saint Laurent’s partner. Spanning more than 13,000 square feet, the museum will feature a temporary exhibition space, an auditorium, a bookshop, a French style café-restaurant with a terrace, and a research library, as well as a 400-square-meter permanent exhibition space, which will showcase an important selection from the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent’s collection. The building was constructed with locally-sourced terra cotta, concrete, and an earthen-colored terrazzo with pieces of Moroccan stone, perfectly fitting in with the surroundings. The facade features a curved design that evokes folds of fabric. Inside, light streams through blue-green and red-orange stained-glass windows inspired by Saint Laurent’s love for Henri Matisse.

Inner Child LEGO House By Kate Dannies
It’s time to revive our inner child at Denmark’s new LEGO House -- a 12,000-square meter house of fun, filled with 25 million iconic colourful building blocks. This new attraction for the young and young at heart is located in LEGO’s hometown of Billund, Denmark. With irresistible exhibitions, restaurants, outdoor spaces, and most importantly tons of LEGOs to play with, this is set to become one of Denmark’s hotspots. It doesn’t hurt that the opening of the House was attended by Danish royalty -- Prince Frederik and Princess Mary helped usher in the fun. C
Kim Christensen
Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, the striking LEGO House is composed of 21 huge “bricks” stacked on one another -- evoking the toy building blocks. The facade is comprised of clay tiles, to enhance the illusion of a giant house made of Lego. The inside houses a store, two exhibition areas, three restaurants, four color-coded play rooms, and 25 million Lego bricks. Flying into the city, the three-acre LEGO House is visible from the air and the building’s terraced squares of red, yellow, green, and blue are easy to spot despite the equally colorful LEGOLAND and Lalandia water park nearby. Though colorful from the sky, the LEGO House is predominantly white at the street level. Ninety-thousand white clip-on ceramic tiles wrap around the building, each abiding by the proportions of a two-by-four LEGO brick. BIG struck a sensitive balance with Billund’s topography and sprawling surroundings, while making the statement LEGO want to make. Steadily rising cubic volumes create two corners that form an orthogonal cascading landscape that provides steps and seating.

At the center of the space stands the Tree of Creativity, an iconic LEGO model standing over 15 m tall and packed full of details and surprises even the most avid LEGO enthusiast cannot fail to be impressed by. The base and roots of the tree represent the LEGO Group foundation in wooden toys and at the very top LEGO minifigure workers are building new branches using a giant crane just like LEGO House itself. HOTSPOT
Unique, Mythique, et Pratique
Le Drugstore Paris
After being a revolutionary hotspot in Paris for more than 60 years, the brasserie at Publicis Drugstore has undergone a renovation by Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio. Renamed Le Drugstore, the new bar and restaurant is located on the ground floor of the iconic shopping and entertainment complex at 133 Avenue des Champs-Élysées. By Kate Dannies
Le Drugstore was created in 1958, but was destroyed by fire in 1972 and rebuilt in 2004. Located at the end of the ChampsÉlysées, Le Drugstore was founded by the owner of Publicis, Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet, who drew inspiration from similar venues he frequented as a young advertising executive in New York City that combined a restaurant, shop, cinema and bar. It was a first for Paris and has not disappointed since. Open until 2 am, the complex offered a diverse array of goods under one roof and still does to this day – from books, pastries and jewelry to cigars and champagne, and world class cuisine. Tom Dixon’s subtle re-interpretation highlights the features of original architect Pierre Dufau’s design, simplifying and enhancing the interiors with a broad range of finishes and materials. Dixon’s custom-made furniture and lighting are spread through the restaurant, bar and conservatory and nod to the site’s history. He incorporated rich and textured materials and contrasting surfaces of timber and marble with leather, velvet, and brass to produce an homage to the Madison Avenue advertising world of old that inspired the concept.
With design this exciting the food is almost an afterthought, but it does not disappoint, being as it is the brainchild of Eric Fréchon, the triple-starred chef of Épicure at Le Bristol. Diners can choose from an extensive menu served in variety of settings, from a sidewalk terrace, to a glamorous bar, leather banquettes, wing chairs at tables, at more conventional sit-up-straight tables with chairs, or on a stool at a white-marble counter before the open kitchen. We love the fact that Le Drugstore is always there right in the heart of Paris when we need a chic place to relax over excellent cuisine--no Champs-Élysées tourist traps for us. With this latest remake of the space we are more at ease and in style than ever in the city of lights.

DESIGN NOTES
The MicroWingback A Re-Mastered Classic
Despite its relatively recent conception, the Wingback chair has quickly become a British design classic. Imagined by renowned designer Tom Dixon, the original Wingback chair was first prototyped as one of several British archetypal chairs for the infamous Shoreditch House Members Club in London. The exaggerated proportions of the wing and the extravagant scale of the chair allow the sitter to be enthroned against a grand backdrop or completely hidden from view. Thanks to its expressive sweeping curves, the statuesque Wingback is often specified by decorators and architects in the centre of spaces as a sculptural intervention rather than a mere piece of seating. The success of the Wingback chair has led to the conception of an entire “Wingback family that now includes dining chairs, ottomans, and sofas. The newest addition to the family is the new Micro Wingback, which has been designed and rescaled to suit homes and confined spaces. It is fully customisable in stores and online in a wide range of fabrics and leg options.

Go Faster
2018 Ferrari Superfast 812
The 2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast is the latest and fastest Ferrari to hit the streets. With 800 horsepower and a 0–60-mph time of 2.8 seconds, with 124 mph coming up in 7.9 seconds, and a top speed of 211 mph it certainly is fast. While faster than ever, the new 812 Superfast sticks to the basics with a classic design and the best of Ferrari’s cutting edge technology. By Kate Dannies
The 812 Superfast is fundamentally a rework of the famed F12berlinetta. With no need to reinvent the wheel, the engineers at Maranello were able to instead concentrate on sweating the details, focusing on engine, chassis electronics, and aerodynamics to create a car that combined the Berlinetta’s everyday usability with the edgier, track-focused F12tdf’s performance, agility and responsiveness. The aim of the new model was to replicate the power and technology of the F12berlinetta in a less intimidating car. The 812 brings slicker aerodynamics, shorter gearing, rear-axle steering, more front tire, next-level traction management, and plenty of horsepower. The changes are so extensive that the car is effectively all-new. The F12’s 65-degree naturally aspirated V-12 has been taken from 6.2 liters to 6.5 liters courtesy of an increase in stroke. There’s a new crankshaft, new connecting rods, and new pistons, as well as material upgrades to the block aimed at increasing strength around the main bearings. But the real focus was on improving breathing efficiency, optimizing combustion, and reducing friction. The 812 Superfast is also the first Ferrari road car in history fitted with electric power steering. The big changes in the 2018 model include a new ultra-high-pressure fuel system, a first on a production car, that operates at up to 5,076 psi and can change the way it pulses the fuel into the combustion chamber to strike the right balance between performance and emissions. Ferrari has used its Formula 1 engine experience to design and build a sophisticated electronically controlled continuously variable intake runner system that uses engine oil pressure to alter the length of the intake runners and optimize power and torque. To take advantage of the increased power and improved response, the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission has been fitted with shorter gear ratios—6% shorter on average and both upshift and downshift times have been reduced by 30%. In terms of design, technology and speed it is going to be hard to beat the 812 Superfast in 2018. We can’t wait to see what this car— and its competition—brings to the track.
