Camicie’s Art of Desert Blanc

Egyptian ready-to-wear brand, Camicie, just launched its SS19 collection, The Art of Desert Blanc, drawing inspiration from the desert culture and landscape. The label which was established in 2015 prides itself with merging style with comfort and functionality, and their latest collection is no different. In The Art of the Desert Blanc Chief-designer Maha Alazm was specifically inspired by the majestic dunes of the White Desert, which she translated into wearable pieces through fabrics and a colour palette to symbolize it. The smooth and artisanal vibes that trend heavily in the new collection are reminiscent of the undulating landscape of the desert. The collection features a series of pieces that are symbolic of desert typography, thus emphasizing the collection name, The Art of Desert Blanc pays tribute to her Arabian roots all while experimenting with balance and movement, which are typically found in desert landscapes. The collection features a total of 15 pieces, varying between shirts, tops and dresses. The designs are soft and measured, combining gorgeous white and blue hues that create a dramatic flow of elegance just like that of the Egyptian desert.

The materials vary from light to a more substantial feel, like linen and silk to symbolize the different textures found in the White Desert. To complement this, the colour palette offers a representation of a journey; the path between sky and sand. The colours include beige, yellow, white and a soft blue hue, reflecting the different colors found within and around the desert from dawn to dusk. As with all previous collections, The Art of Desert Blanc gives women the opportunity to express uniqueness, diversity and beauty through its glamourous practicality.

INTERVIEW

La Reina Gowns Your Online Designer Closet Introducing one of Egypt’s biggest designer closets, La Reina Gowns is the fairy godmother we’ve always wished for. With the mantra ‘expand your closet or cash it out’, La Reina essentially allows you to rent or lend your high-end dresses at a more affordable rate. From their fabulous dress collections to their styling services, they have all your needs anticipated for a glam night to remember. We sat down with the cofounders Ghada Eltanawy, 26, and Amr Diab, 27, to talk about the challenges associated with their business, upcoming projects and much more. By Sarah Guirguis

La Reina is definitely about empowering women. If your dress is hanging in your closet collecting dust, we give you the opportunity to make some extra cash off it. We also want women to have a special dress for every event without having to break the bank.

What kind of challenges do you face in this business? The biggest challenge is to break down the social taboo of renting a dress or wearing a pre-worn dress. We’re addressing a very specific market - A and B. For most of them, renting is associated with a lower social economic class. Another challenge is that many clients don’t fully trust e-commerce yet and they are not familiar with the online buying process. Most people don’t use our credit card system so most of the orders entail cash on delivery, which can be risky. Credit is so much better when it comes to sustaining the business. Quality management is also very hectic. You have to ensure that around 2000 dresses stay in the same condition after going through multiple client try-ons and events. Across the region, we haven’t seen a known brand with a similar business idea so there’s no one to really learn from either.

Tell us about your home trial services and people’s feedback on them so far. The service allows you to go on our website and choose up to five dresses. They come to your door, you try them on and the guy waits up to 45 minutes to take back what you want to return. First time delivery is for free and after that you get charged 150 EGP for courier fees. People really like that they get to go through this process in the comfort of their own homes, try on the dresses with their own accessories and the fact that it starts out as a free service. Home trials have definitely spread our reach to those living on the other side of Cairo and couldn’t actually come all the way to La Reina in New Cairo.

When did you deicide to make Hijabi and Kids sections available? The Kids section was very recently launched but the Hijabi section we had in mind from the beginning. They’ve been a good percentage of our market since we first started. As for Kids, our supply team

23

saw that it was a trend for brides to ask for flower girl dresses when they came in for a fitting. We record those insights and we rely heavily on data analytics. There are actually a few surprises for new product lines coming up soon.

If someone is going to lend a dress through La Reina, what criteria do they have to pass first?

It depends on the timing of wedding seasons and what our data tells us about style shortages, so this benchmark is actually adapted on a monthly basis. However, our general requirements for a bridal dress is that it has to be high-end couture, in great condition, come with all its accessories and bought less than 2 years before being submitted. We’re more flexible with evening dresses and we even accept custom-made but only if the dress looks like an original piece with a creative concept. Nonetheless, we’re mainly after dresses from a well-known brand or designer. All dresses actually go through three inspection phases. Firstly, you post a picture of your dress online and we decide if there’s a current demand for it. Then, we pick it up from the owner and bring it here for physical quality assessment. Based on how much trials we think the dress can endure, we put a price on it. The third stage is the photo shoot and if we can’t find a model to fit in the dress, it probably means that the size won’t fit most of our clients. In that case, we have to reject it.

Having taken part in the Women’s Expo this month in Galleria 40, what values do

you hope to promote with your business? Our company has around 55 employees and 95% of them are women. You’ll also find girls in our engineering team. This is something we are very proud of. La Reina is definitely about empowering women. If your dress is hanging in your closet collecting dust, we give you the opportunity to make some extra cash off it. We also want women to have a special dress for every event without having to break the bank.

What kind of dresses do you see most Egyptian girls opt for these days? Everyone is becoming more daring with their fashion choices. They used to go for very simple styles and basic colors like black or navy. Now, most of our rentals are dramatic dresses with bold colors.

Where do you see La Reina Gowns taking off to in the next five years? We’re looking forward to expanding our inventory to ten thousand dresses. We want the biggest closet ever with several product lines. We want to be present and noticed in every wedding. Getting feedback and reviews is really important to us because we want to figure out how many are wearing La Reina on every guest list and what barriers are preventing people from renting our dresses. We’re also looking to expand to other African countries in the future.

Our latest project is the La Reina application. We’re not launching it just to be trendy and add another app to the market. It will revolutionize the whole renting experience because it adapts according to your personal style. You do a little quiz that collects data about your style and accordingly, presents the dresses you will most likely prefer in the first place. Our goal is to use AI to provide an optimized, personal experience for every client.

Inspired by the fast-paced fashion Industry that’s ever changing, fashion agency FLARE PR teamed up with Maison Mehany on a project aiming to highlight the evolution of Fashion during Paris Fashion Week. This marks the seventh time that FLARE PR has produced one of its on-going series of multi-brand collaborative shoots. The main aim of this series of projects is to present featured brands and talents through an authentic production, shedding light on regional and local emerging designers to secure a place for them on the global fashion map. A cause we can all rally behind. Instead of focusing on the future of fashion, this project pays tribute to the whimsical evolution of fashion by revolutionary showcasing featured brands in a production that swings from different time periods, giving a glance into history. The striking editorial images were set in the artistic halls of Palais de Tokyo and Villa Belleville, capturing the play of light and shadow, whilst making a strong claim of the evolution of fashion. Maison Mehany conceptualized and photographed the latest Spring/Summer 2019 regional designers’ creations. The editorial featured statement portraits of models minimally styled to depict a modern and relevant perspective of a high-fashion campaign. Displayed in the series were art installations, paintings, sculptures and even wall hangings. These props were paired with still-like mannequin poses, giving way to a dramatic fashion series. The models were styled by Maison Mehany, who dressed them in contemporary clothing, accessories and jewelry. Hauntingly elegant, the fashion-forward looks were beautifully perfected by hairstylist and pro makeup artist, Kenya.

INTERVIEW

Dina Ragheb

What do you consider a turning point in your career? When people started to know me in public avenues and give me complements about my work, that was definitely a big boost and a turning point in my career.

Which do you prefer to do more... Makeup for bridal or runway or photo shoots?

Glam Master Makeup Artist

I love challenges and each type of shoot comes with it’s own which I do enjoy. However bridal is on the top of my list as it gives me an awesome feeling to deeply influence and have a positive effect on the brides’ mood and self-esteem in such a big day of her life.

With her signature glam makeup look, there isn’t a makeup aficionado who isn’t familiar with the name of professional makeup artist Dina Ragheb. Nearing 380K followers on Instagram alone, Dina is more than a social media phenomenon. Girls specifically seek her out to glam them up for their most important day of their lives-their wedding. The result? Picture-perfect makeup applied to them by the makeup master. We got up close and personal with Dina ahead of her highly anticipated “Master Class” sessions that are set to take place this month.

Why did you decide on teaching a Master Class? What should the attendees expect to learn? I get lots of requests to give makeup classes and I felt committed to share my knowledge and experience with those make up fans and lovers. In the classes I will share with the students lots of makeup tips and tricks. I will teach them the dos and don’ts when it comes to applying makeup. I will also help them to turn their passion and skills into professional career, and for those who take the course for their personal use, they will surely get to know how to apply it professionally.

What is the top requested beauty look that you receive from clients? Simple yet sophisticated.

When did you know that you wanted to work in beauty?

How do you constantly stay on top of the latest trends and techniques?

I knew it a long time ago around the age of 13 as a teenager, but it took me some time and courage till I turned that passion and idea into a reality.

By checking the world of makeup updates, new trends, and techniques everyday for at least an hour. I never get enough of learning and practicing.

What are the challenges you faced along the way into becoming a makeup artist? When I started makeup as a career, the job of a makeup artist was neither appreciated nor taken seriously. Even still nowadays some people categorize it as an easy and fun job, not knowing the hard work that goes into it. I overcome these challenges through hard work, committing to my dream and constantly working towards my goal.

How did social media impact your career?

Photography: Collab Hair Stylist: Eslam Stylist: Rania MUA: Dina Ragheb

It definitely helps my work spread and my network expand. It also helps a lot when it comes to communicate with people and clients. Its their feedback and comments that push me to keep going, get better and drives me to achieve success.

31

How do you decide which brands and companies to partner with and become an ambassador for? I always go for brands that I have tested or used myself. I partner with brands that have credibility, so I can be able to recommend them for people confidently.

Name the top 6 make up and skin care products you cannot live without? Nuxe Merveillance expert eye cream Nuxe huile prodigieuse Bioderma H2O Benefits precisely, my brow pencil Dolce&Gabbana pressed powder Ofra fixer spray

How should a bride pick her makeup artist? She should go through the work of a variety of makeup artists and choose the one with a style that matches her own-a style she can envision herself being comfortable in. And it’s always better to pick a makeup artist that you saw their work in real life.

What advice would you give to up and coming makeup artists? Do it with passion, never stop learning and don’t go commercial.

What are the biggest mistakes that girls make with their makeup? Using wrong shades for their skin colors. Applying excessive makeup in the morning. How to choose the right look to each occasion. Applying makeup in bad light.

Who is your makeup idol? Sofia Lauren- the bold cat eyes look she created had been a classic. It remains chic for centuries.

Name a few of your dream clients As a fan of old movies and their glamour I wish I had the chance to work with Nadia Lotfy and Audrey Hepburn. From Nowadays Kim Kardashian comes on the top of the list.

Makeup Now Optional at Virgin Atlantic One of Britain’s top transatlantic airlines, Virgin Atlantic, has announced that female cabin crew are no longer required to where makeup. They will also now allow the option of pants without it having to be specially requested. Given it’s 2019, many thought it was about time they cover these obviously sexist issues. Unfortunately, there are still airlines out there that still practice these traditional rules. We hope more commercial airlines will follow suit after Virgin Atlantic.

Amkiri Scented Tattoo Perfumed tattoos have been recently trending and Amkiri is one of the latest brands offering them. Created by Shoval Shavit Shapiro, she has created a line of tattoos that carry a sent of spearmint, ginger, juniper berry, earthy musk and cedar wood. The ink comes in charcoal and ivory shades and will stay on for at least 12 hours. It comes in the form of stencils and wands and is also cruelty free. What more could we ask for?

Dirty Lemon’s +retinol Retinol has been the skin care buzzword for a while now, and it has come to the point that it is now being produced in drink form. The brand Dirty Lemon has created a drink called +retinol, that is meant to decrease signs of aging and wrinkles. Apparently, this crazy idea is not being rejected by dermatologists as the direct and increased intake of the vitamin A contained in retinol is in fact great for the skin. Despite this, many are still weary off consuming such a skin care-based item in liquid form.

Michelle Pfeiffer’s Henry Rose Bobbi Brown Wellness Bobbi Brown knows how to create a high-quality makeup product. But her latest productions see her going from makeup to wellness. Hence why her collaboration with Walmart is causing lots of excitement. Creating a wellness line, called Evolution 18, the beauty veteran is now focusing on inner beauty. The line, which includes tea, gummies, pills and powders, is both exciting and accessible.

Michelle Pfeiffer is not the biggest fan of fragrances, feeling that they are toxic, as you can never explain what’s in them. She once went a whole year without wearing a fragrance. This is until she created her own high-end line of fragrance that is completely transparent about their process of production and products. The line named Henry Rose, a conjunction of the middle names of her children, is not only coming in 5 different unisex scents but will also be contained in 90% recyclable glass bottles with soy lids. The line, while quite expensive, is being funded by the 60-year-old actress herself, making her wish for a safe fragrance come true.

BIJOUX

Summer’s Raw Roots by Jude Benhalim

For the first time, Jude Benhalim takes on minimalism in Raw Roots, exploiting nature’s building blocks of repetition, color and negative space. All pieces from Raw Roots are individually handmade to imitate and illustrate natural structures: symmetries, spirals, waves, meanders, cracks, tessellations and stripes; all found in cultivated forms. The collection explores depth of shape, singularity of line, orderliness and chaos as it relates to the deconstructed forms in nature. Jude Benhalim thoughtfully fuses patterns found in pomegranates, banana trunks, mushrooms and papayas with gold plated brass, 925 silver and custom-made colored resin stones, offering an artful yet wearable composition.

Raw Roots features a total of 15 gold plated brass and 925 sterling silver pieces with varying necklaces, chokers, earrings, bracelets and rings. The designer’s love of color is shown throughout the collection; with each piece of resin crafted and dyed by hand. The color palettes for this collection are very summery, infusing red, aqua, orange, purple and teal resin stones with gold plated brass and sterling silver, creating colorful fruitful hues that complement the jewelry and make a perfect fit for the spring/summer season.

Every season Jewelry designer Jude Benhalim launches a new collection that becomes an instant must-have of the season. Her latest collection titled “Raw Roots” is bound to be a hit as well. Drawing inspiration from the earth’s core the collection captures the textural beauty of the natural world. Inspired by the beautiful illustrations of the anatomy of fruits and vegetables, Jude Benhalim channels the complex textures, patterns, structures and shapes in nature to reveal a hidden beauty found in organic forms.

INTERVIEW

er, which is Kempinski’s performance appraisal method. Basically, I carve out time for a personal conversation in quiet surroundings with employees to see where they stand.

How would you resolve any type of customer dissatisfaction? Guests’ complaints are an unavoidable reality in any hospitality business. First, we find out why the guest is unhappy. Then, we do our best to make them happy, and afterwards, we have management review the incident to consider potential improvements for service or complaints handling.

Which of the hotel restaurants do you recommend the most?

Luxury at Kempinski Nile Hotel Interview with the GM Located on the east bank of the Nile River in the historical quarter of Cairo’s Garden City neighborhood, Kempinski Nile Hotel is an ideal getaway within the bustling city. Noted among Egypt’s leading luxury hotels, the staff is known for always going the extra mile to personalize and upgrade your experience. We talked to GM Henri Ruiz what makes the hotel special, challenges in the hospitality industry, and much more…

What makes Kempinski Nile stand out from other hotels in Egypt?

What are the main challenges you face in hotel management?

How much do you depend on word of mouth and social media?

Our five-star luxury boutique hotel sets the tone, showing off the city in all its glory with panoramic views of the Nile, Garden City, the surrounding neighborhood and uptown. Our Nile Deluxe Suites have standalone soaking tubs that leave guests relaxed and stress-free. Being a 191-room property allows us to personalize the experience further, with private butler service, customized meals from the restaurant and a collection of amenities that will ensure the guests’ stay is everything it should be. That’s why we go by the slogan “Your Haven by the Nile”.

Any job that comes with the goal of customer satisfaction is a daily challenge. The guest is considered the king in the hospitality industry, since the whole purpose of the industry is to keep him/her happy. As a hotel general manager, you need to always be on the lookout for new ways to achieve that.

Word of mouth is our most valuable and most powerful form of marketing now, and it doesn’t stop after one interaction. At Kempinski, we are always working on having a positive impact on our guests to remain at the top of the leading hotels in the area.

Another key management issue in the hospitality industry nowadays is the booking and revenue challenge. Today, guests have several options to choose from, which forces you to up your marketing and advertising game.

I’m not sure which I love most – Osmanly’s fresh and delicious Turkish plates, the chef’s tempting pastries or the warm feeling I get every time I visit this restaurant. The Blue is another favorite, since each guest there is family. Its delicious international flavors include Chicken Almond, Ricotta Ravioli and the best Apple Panna Cotta in town. Did I mention the Raspberry Dark Chocolate Cake at the Chocolate Lounge? Heavenly!

of the celebrities’ favorite go-to places in downtown Cairo. With a fabulous night view of the Nile and live jazz music in the background, the atmosphere is really chic and urbane.

Tell us a bit about the Jazz Bar. How have people responded to it?

Which previous promotional events have been the most successful?

I can leave the answer to the TripAdvisor ranking because the Jazz Bar is at the top of the “Nightlife in Cairo” category. Located on Floor 10, the Jazz Bar has always been the cherry on top for us, being one

Recently, we started the summer season with the full-moon event on the Roof Top on Floor 11, hosting the superstar belly dancer Anastasia for a festive night to remember. All attendees enjoyed it and

are looking forward to returning for more events throughout the season.

What is your vision for the future of the hotel? I am addicted to non-traditional concepts, so my vision for Kempinski Nile is to be recognizable for personalized service and quality standards, and to be consistent in the promotion of elegance, creativity and future development. We pride ourselves on truly customizing every stay to suit each of our guests.

How do you normally evaluate employee performance? We have a very efficient way of evaluating employees’ performance quarterly by conducting TTTT - Time to Talk Togeth-

Narrative Disruptors 2019 Highlights By Sarah Guirguis As an extension of the Narrative Summit series, CC Plus recently held a Disruptors event on April 14th at the Nile Ritz Carlton. Under the Auspices of the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology and the Ministry of State for Emigration & Egyptian Expatriates’ Affairs, Narrative Disruptors brought under one roof a prominent lineup of speakers pioneering in digital transformation. The topics tackled revolved around migration into the era of IOT, artificial intelligence and reaching financial inclusion. Here is the scoop on this high-powered event. Talking about the implementation of disruptive business models, the CEO of Orange Egypt Yasser Shaker said, “Many companies have become new empires governing the world. Technology and digital transformation are the sectors that control the global economy.” After playing a significant role in the technology sector for over 20 years, Shaker was promoted to CEO of Orange Egypt in 2018 after being the Senior VP Orange Middle East and Africa (OMEA). He explained the concept of how disruption is human nature since no one can be satisfied in staying exactly the same way for too long. On the digitization of Egypt’s economy and reaching the mainstream audience, Eng. Ibrahim Sarhan commented, “Digital transformation is a state strategy that is

currently being implemented in partnership with all sectors with the aim of providing citizens with special services through electronic transactions.” With extensive experience of almost thirty years, Sarhan is currently the Chairman & Managing Director of E-finance. He recognized the Disruptors event as a significant platform for spreading the culture of digital transformation and supporting initiatives to spread awareness on the importance of technology. An undeniable highlight of the event was the speech by Karim Shafei about the value of preserving history and harnessing it for the future. “Disruption cannot come from the top down. Instead, it is up to us to harness the changes happening on a societal level to create inspiring solutions,” he said. As Chairman & CEO of Al Ismaelia Real Estate Investment, he talked about the role of the company in reviving Downtown Egypt and their awe-inspiring renovation projects. Founder of Art D’Egypt Nadine Abdel Ghaffar also talked about the power to change the status quo. In a world where people just stereotype Egyptian art as Pharaonic art, she talked about our opportunity to introduce modern and contemporary art to the global scene, since “Egypt’s image-building lies within our hands.” With her interest and dedication

to art and design, Nadine expressed her commitment to document Egypt’s modern art heritage and promote Egyptian art. In a panel moderated by Hany Mahmoud, the former Minister of Communication and Technology in Egypt, Blerta Allko stated, “The social security program is characterized by its efficiency and can be considered a stepping stone towards financial inclusion of women, as Egypt implements the cash transfer program, Takaful and Karama.” If you don’t know who Blerta is, she is the UN Women Country Representative in Egypt, a passionate professional that brings over 22 years of experience along with new perspectives on how to transform intersecting gender-related issues in Egypt. Last but definitely not least, another panel discussed the process of stepping up and finding your disruptive edge. Moderated by author and screenwriter Ahmed Mourad, the panel featured powerful people in the creative industry, including managing director of Nile Radio Hala Hegazi, actor Asser Yassin and designer Maha Al Sagheer. The main highlight was Yassin talking about his serendipitous story that pushed him towards acting and the fundamental need to take risks in order to become a disruptor.

At the historic 1886 French restaurant, guests dine in the original crystal-lit salon where royals and dignitaries were served. You get a palatial yet intimate experience. Guests can get a breakfast of fresh pastries and omelets at Le Corniche, and in the evening, indulge in a gourmet international cuisine. After strolling bougainvillea-lined gardens, they can sip drinks at the Central Park Bar of this Luxor masterpiece or visit The Royal Bar for an aperitif. At this ruby-red elegant bar, enjoy the soothing sound of classical piano every night creating an inviting atmosphere. Richly decorated with a majestic crystal

chandelier and plush, pink oriental carpets, the Victorian Lounge is where guests can indulge in a royal afternoon tea with a bubbly twist, delicate macarons and scones. This is actually where King Farouk, the last King of Egypt, enjoyed his beloved tea ritual. You can also enjoy your tea at The Nile Terrace while soaking up the last sunrays of the day. The hotel offers tantalizing dining experiences at Dine by the Felucca, where diners can sail on the magical river in a traditional felucca and enjoy a scenic trip. They also get to savor a delightful break-

fast, lunch or dinner, presented in an array of international elements and authentic Egyptian dishes. Sizzlers Garden BBQ is a delicious flame-grilled feast outdoors in the royal garden overlooking the pool. This is where you can dine under the stars on mouth-watering meat delicacies, served with a selection of delicious creations. Essentially, dining services at Sofitel Luxor Winter Palace invest 126 years of culinary arts and magic whilst maintaining the very original identity of the place. You won’t be disappointed.
