EDITOR’S NOTE

Fall For Fashion

T

his issue is dedicated to one of our favorite season of the year, as we fall in love with Fall fashion and all the excitement a new wardrobe brings with it.

First up we feature the latest collection by Sarah Fahmy-a dazzling array of dresses and jumpsuits that are worthy of red carpet events. While Sarah was inspired by the intricate beauty of chandeliers for her collection, our other featured designer of Sadafa was inspired by her adopted hometown of Cote d’lvore. Make sure to see Dina El Shikh’s brand Sadafa’s latest capsule collection inspired by West Africa and shot in Paris. Fronting the issue is the ever-fashionable musical star Malak El Husseiny. Known for her cool and carefree style, Malak dazzles in our cover in an elegant shoot where she is adorned with Katchouni jewelry’s latest collection titled “The Ivy”. This issue, we inject a little bit of fashion flair in our lifestyle section as well, from the eclectic house of Margherita Missoni to the Hotel Dress Code in Paris. For our exhibition section, Kate Dannies takes us on a tour of the world’s best fashion exhibits. Taking place in the Museum of Culture in Milan, an exhibit was held to commemorate Etro’s first 50 years. Already an icon of Italian luxury, the exhibit is like stepping into an Etro wonderland replete with the house’s signature prints and patterns. The second exhibit is organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, marking the first time ever for a major museum to explore Muslim dress worldwide. With ‘modest moda’ having a moment, this exhibit is long overdue. Enjoy the issue,

Adidas Z.N.E Hoodie Anytime, any day, anywhere. Adidas’s latest multifunctional hoodie is made for athletes who are “born ready for anything, at any moment”. This hoodie is made with a fast release zipper that is ready when you are. Featured in the campaign are global sporting superstars such as Real Madrid footballer Karim Benzema and multitalented female athlete Julie Jaws Nelson. The campaign showcases these athletes’ born-ready attitude throughout ever aspect of their lives. And with the Z.N.E hoodie, they are never more than a rip away from action.

Michael Kors Acquisition of Versace A true milestone for the global fashion luxury group, Michael Kors has acquired the Italian luxury brand Versace for 1.83 billion Euros. As the epitome of Italian luxury fashion, Versace is estimated to provide $2.0 billion in revenue, according to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Michael Kors, John Idol. Donatella Versace, current chief designer and vice president of the brand, has communicated that this is a very exciting time for Versace and that she, her brother Santo, and her daughter Allegra are all looking forward to working under the leadership of Idol.

LOEWE X Knot on My Planet In support of the Elephant Crisis Fund, Knot On My Planet organization and LOEWE launched a limited edition range of Tan Elephant Mini Bags, featuring beadwork by Samburu women from Northern Kenya. LOEWE travelled to Kenya to work with women from the Samburu Workshop at Ol Malo, in the heart of Samburu, who meticulously handcrafted beadwork for a limited edition collection of LOEWE’s iconic Elephant Mini Bag in Tan. The tan colored bag doesn’t only stand for style, it also stands for a good cause, one that is determined to save one of the most remarkable animals on the planet.

H&M X Moschino The long-awaited collaboration between fast fashion brand H&M and Italian luxury house Moschino has finally happened and fronting the campaign’s metallic vibe is none other than Gigi Hadid. Striking and shimmering gold and silver pallets are portrayed in front of an upscale ballroom. The edgy street style of the clothing contrasts with the regal and sophisticated nature of the colors and provides a truly interesting final look. Playfulness, originality and out of the box ideas are all that can be expected of this ultimately inevitable collab.

Everlane’s ReNew Collection Clothes waste is unfortunately a huge issue in the fashion world. The current fashion wheel is pulling out new trends and styles every week, causing for ripped, slightly worn out, or even worn once clothing to be thrown out for the new best thing. That’s why Evergreen is a true fashion revolutionary when it comes to making both a profitable and environmental impact. Already open with their factory, locations and even detailed cost breakdowns on why their direct-to-consumer pricing is more affordable, this company is shining as a speck of green in the usually dirty industry. So, it comes as no surprise that their new initiative is to eliminate any virgin plastic from it’s entire supply chain by 2021. With this they unleashed a collection called ReNew, made out of recycled plastic water bottles, reusing plastic rather than using new plastic. Everlane is truly an example to follow in times that we need companies to go green most.

Margherita Maccapani Missoni x Mott50 Margherita Maccapani Missoni has teamed up with Mott50, a brand known for UV protective swimwear, to create a color blocked, minimalistic line that represents everything good about Italian chic. The more modest take on a swimsuit is definitely a refreshing one. When it comes to sun protection, we all know than clothing coverage is better than lathered coverage. Finally, a swimsuit that keeps you safe, stylish and comfortable.

BEAUTY CLIPPINGS By Nour Ibrahim

Huda Beauty’s New Fragrance The Dubai-based makeup brand Huda Beauty is set to release a new fragrance. Revealed in the latest episode of the owner Huda Kattan’s reality show, Huda Boss, the perfume is set to make its debut at an unknown date. As revealed by her business partner and sister Mona on Instagram, the fragrance has been years in the making. While much behind the scent is still unknown, the episode releasing the news shows Mona on a trip in Grasse, France, in which she could have gained possible inspiration for the scent of the perfume.

Ice as Primer Hack Let’s face it, primer is truly one of the most expensive makeup products a girl can ever purchase. However, it is the only product that allows for a final airbrushed look. Or is it? Beauty blogger Ashley Blue DeFrancesco has made a claim that rubbing an ice cube on your face before applying your makeup works just as well as any old primer. Apparently, the ice closes and tightens up your pores, just as a primer would cover them, allowing for makeup to go on as smooth as it would with the infamously expensive product. The closing of the pores also acts as a protective measure for the skin as well, ensuring that makeup does not seep into them, causing buildup and acne. A hack definitely worth a shot given the cost goes from extremely expensive to literally nothing.

Transforming Rami Malek into Freddie Mercury How do you transform an Egyptian-American into an iconic British singer? Movie Magic. The iconic lead singer of the band Queen, Freddie Mercury, is being brought to life in a new film following the life of the late singer called “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Being played by none other than Rami Malek, famous for his roles in Mr. Robot and the Night at the Museum franchise, it was to be a true challenge to transform the actor into the front man of Queen. Creating teeth prosthetics, an artificial nose, wigs, mustaches, and the trademark Rockstar eyeliner, hair and prosthetic designer Jan Sewell managed to transform him into the icon many grew to adore. Malek himself was open to all these makeup applications, though daunting, and, according to Swells, provided the convincing performance that sold Freddie Mercury home.

Chrissy Teigen Food-Inspired Makeup Collection If you thought Chrissy Teigen’s recipes tasted any good, you’ll love the palette of her new food themed makeup line. Partnering with BECCA, the iconic model and foodie has created a line of makeup in which every product is named after a food. Appropriately named “Cravings Collection” as an ode to her cookbook series of the same name, the line features two limited edition makeup kits, the Glow Kitchen Kit including eyeshadow colors such as “souffle`” and “confectionary” powdered highlighter. The second set, the Lip Icing Glow Gloss Kit is truly the icing on the cake, coming in colors named Crème Brulee, Cinnamon Bun and Candy Cane- all scented appropriately. The line is made to perfection and honestly looks good enough to eat.

Upcoming Holiday Palettes With the holiday season coming up, makeup brands are releasing new holiday themed palettes. From this variety includes Fenty Beauty with a Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Palette that is great for a cool toned, crystalized look to match some frosty themes. Also coming up, matching the sweater weather vibe, is the NARS Riot Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Set, meant to go with any shade of fall or winter colored velvety jumpers. Finally, the Too Faced Gingerbread Spice Eye Shadow Palette is meant to warm you up just as a gingerbread cookie straight out of the oven would, but from the outside in.

Sarah Fahmy’s La Belle Epoque

Photography: Sarah Lasheen Production: C-Connect Model: Soraya Shawky Art Direction: Salwa El Tambouly

Growing up with a dream that her designs will someday end up on red carpets, Sarah Fahmy is taking the Egyptian fashion scene by storm with her evening and bridal gowns that are second to none. Her lifelong passion finally paying off, Sarah introduced a gorgeous Autumn/Winter 18 collection last September, titled La Belle Epoque and modeled by none other than professional beauty vlogger and make up guru Soraya Shawky. By Sarah Guirguis

Unable to decide on a favorite design, Fahmy expressed how she gave it her all with each dress in the collection and explained, “If I’m not proud of something, it will never have my name on it.” Given that the brand’s face also had the potential to drop some jaws, Fahmy was looking for someone that could really carry the vibe she wanted to give people with her designs. On that note, she chose Soraya Shawky because of the beauty and strength that she embodies as a fashion and makeup enthusiast.

Like the singer SIA, Fahmy drew her inspiration from chandeliers. Describing the theme behind La Belle Époque, she told us, “The title means ‘the beautiful era’. I chose that name because that’s what we at SF tend to relate to. Everything in the old days, also referred to as the beautiful era, was made flawlessly, rich in detail and full of passion.” All of which really is incarnated in this collection, making it fit for a queen.

27

Fahmy had been working on the brand since she was a student. After graduating from the American University in Cairo, she felt like she wasn’t quite done studying yet so she decided to study fashion for two more years. In 2010, she finally started taking orders. About her personal style and aesthetic, Fahmy stated, “Architectural, bold and detailed.” When she first started designing, she chose to go big or go home by basically opting for evening and bridal gowns before she decided to take on other endeavors.

Regarding fabrics and materials, Fahmy picks them according to the client’s body-type, fashion season and envisioned design. Perfection being her personal challenge, Fahmy told us that the support she gets from her family has been her constant tower of strength. Looking forward, she and her team have their eye on conquering the international fashion scene. To book an appointment, you can send an email to info@sarahfahmy.com or reach out to the SF Instagram account.

Malak El Husseiny Katchouni’s Ivy Princess

Production & Art Direction: Flare PR Photography: Black Creative Studios Set Design: The Wonder Agency MUA: Shariff Tanyous Hair: Al Sagheer Salons

Amidst a sea of rising musical talents, Malak El Husseiny is a name that stands out. With her soothing voice, the singer/songwriter has formed a unique and instantly recognizable sound that continues to gain popularity. After releasing her debut EP followed by a number of singles, Malak was one of the most talked about contestant on The X Factor in 2015, resulting in both critical acclaim and mass appeal across the Middle East region. As her musical identity started taking shape, Malak began collaborating independently with the most prominent underground musicians in Egypt, making her more and more of a recognizable name in the scene.

Katchouni jewelry, the fine jewelry brand with timeless elegance, sought to capture the essence of their new collection titled “The Ivy showcasing their collections through Malak, who beautifully enlivened the glorious diamonds, rubies and emeralds of the collection pieces. Malak, wrapped in silk, dazzling with elegance, bright green eyes protruding through the vines, as unique and recognizable as her soulful voice; a modern-day Venus composing her silent melody, swaying in the jewelry and couture, bringing to life the music and beauty within her as the French epoque walls transformed into her stage. The photo shoot for the collection combines statement fine jewelry pieces and dainty delicate diamonds with luxurious Egyptian haute couture designers, such as the likes of Temraza and Maram Borhan, beautifully endorsed by Malak, giving the perfect extravagant feminine touch to the exquisite fine jewelry.

Since its launch in 2016, Dina El Sheikh’s label s.a.d.a.f.a (Arabic for mother of pearl), has attracted a devout following of Arab celebrities such as the likes of Hend Sabry, Yousra, Arwa Gouda and Amina Khaliland with good reason. With her statement minaudieres in integrated exotic patterns and indigenous artisan crafts, the brand became an instant hit. For her latest Autumn/Winter 2018 collection, El Sheikh has raised the bar once again. Titled “Afrique Mon Amour”, the capsule collection pays homage to her adopted hometown in West Africa’s Cote d’lvore. Being very much inspired by Abidijan, Yamoussoukro, Grand-Bassam and El Sheikh’s personal adventures, the line features three statement clutches in geometric and tribal patterns delicately and meticulously handcrafted from motherof-pearl inlays to decorate one’s handlike precious ‘objets d’arts.’ With vibrant earthy colours, this collection showcases Dina’s meticulous eye for detail to create unique s.a.d.a.f.a minaudieres that boldy speak to contemporary tastes. In celebration of the enduring love affair, for the campaign of her latest collection and the effortless, chic Parisian sense of style, Dina El Sheikh teamed up with Spanish photographer Diego Diaz Marin to create an editorial that exudes femininity and timeless beauty all while glowing in the city of love, Paris. Captivating and very nostalgic, the resulting photographs symbolize the brand’s fashion-forward aesthetic and ‘je ne sais quoi appeal.’

Chloé’s Classic Motif

When it comes to fashion, the horse has always been an intriguing animal that made for a captivating motif. Beautiful, graceful, sensitive, steadfast- the horse is an embodiment of strength. That’s the reason why French luxury house Chloé has long had horses stand for what it calls the ‘inherent free-spirit of Chloé Girls – the independent women who have inspired the collections year after year’. When Natacha Ramsay-Levi debuted her first collection as creative director in October 2017, the white horse embroidery patterned across a brick-hued velvet suit made an instant impression and has since become one of Spring Summer ‘18’s most recognizable statements. Yet the motif’s origin is part of Chloé’s heritage, with the rearing horse asserting a determined character, and attesting to an authentic and cherished connection. The inspiration for this signature horse motif can be traced back to Stella McCartney followed by Phoebe Philo, who were both equestrian enthusiasts. In 2000, there were subtle embroidery tracings followed by print interpretations that echoed the classical paintings of George Stubbs and Théodore Géricault. A clever tessellated pattern vaguely nodding to M.C. Escher in the SS01 collection offers the most direct link to the rearing form revived by Natacha Ramsay-Levi.

Over the years, the horse has also been present more dimensionally through elements such as sculpted door handles by Gill Parker that were installed at the Sloane Street, rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré, and Avenue Montaigne boutiques starting in 2002. From the charms adorning the KERALA BAG to the streamlined, equestrian-inspired hardware that now punctuate the Nile, Roy and Tess bags, the influence remains strong. As such, new jewelry collections will also be expanding on this imagery, from antique-style medallion necklaces to figurative bracelets and earrings. Less frequent but no less complementary are the compelling campaigns and artistic films directed over the years by the likes of Taryn Simon and Blue Farrier. Likewise, Kathryn Ferguson documented a herd of wild white horse with Chloé’s 60th anniversary in 2012. In nearly every instance, the animals have been shown without saddlery as pure expressions of freedom. In assuming the creative reins at Chloé, Natacha Ramsay-Levi is reintroducing and repeating the motif as the essence of forward movement and vital energy. Through her creative output, we hope it will continue to be both a lively design and a powerful evocation of grace.

Fashion Branding M A K E O V E R S

‘What’s in a name?’ Shakespeare wondered in his classic Romeo & Juliet. For fashion brands the answer is everything! In recent years, a growing number of leading fashion brands have been making bold changes to their names, logos, and overall brand image. Whether due to freshly appointed fashion chiefs developing new creative vision or wanting to make a statement to the world, branding makeovers are taking place right and left. Here are five brands that dropped some fashion branding bombshells on us recently. By Sarah Guirguis

The 160-year-old renowned Burberry logo exited stage last August to make room for a new visual identity under the new reign of Riccardo Tisci. The Italian designer, who left Givenchy in 2017 and took over as Burberry’s creative director this year, produced a classic, contemporary logo and a monogram with the initials TB, in honor of Thomas Burberry, the original founder. About working with art director Peter Saville, Tisci said, “Peter is one of our generation’s greatest design geniuses. I’m so happy to have collaborated together to reimagine the new visual language for the house.”

The unveiling of Berluti’s new brand image materialized in the first campaign ad since the appointment of Kris Van Assche as artistic director last April. The black and white photos shot by Jamie Hawkesworth and styled by Mauricio Nardi, along with the new logo, hinge on the very heritage of Berluti but also clue us in on the new direction of the fashion house. Created in collaboration with iconic graphic design studio M/M Paris, the logo highlights the brand name in the same way it was carved on a Berluti wooden shoe tree from 1895, the same year Alessandro Berluti became a shoemaker.

You might not know this but rebranding Celine wasn’t Hedi Slimane’s first dauntless move as creative director. He did it first back in 2012 at Saint Laurent when he turned ‘Yves Saint Laurent’ into ‘Saint Laurent Paris’ and replaced the iconic YSL logo. At the time, dropping ‘Yves’, which is the founder’s first name, sent so many fans of the brand into panic mode. Over time, people have gotten a little more accustomed to the idea of change and new direction in the fashion industry, and that’s how we think we’ll survive this renaissance.

We’re actually guessing that Calvin Klein restarted this rebranding trend last year and then everyone agreed that it really was time for change and followed suit. Their logo debuted with the caption “a return to the spirit of the original” with the identical concept of acknowledging the founder and his original style. We’re just not sure how Raf Simons planned to accomplish that by turning the letters from lowercase to uppercase. The outcome is still impressive, though. Very vintage.

As for Celine, the change was subtle but nonetheless big. Hedi Slimane, former creative director for Yves Saint Laurent, killed the accent on the ‘E’ and altered the spacing between the letters as a bold statement to the fashion world that there is a new commander in town. The move was emphasized more when Slimane deleted the Celine Instagram account that symbolized the previous brand identity to re-launch it with the new logo, along with a new set of ad teasers.

Azza Fahmy, who designed the cultural 2019 Nubia collection comments: “This collection holds a very personal resonance as the theme is reminiscent of “Houses of the Nile” my very first collection which launched my design career. For ‘Nubia’ I was creatively drawn to the structure and characteristics of Nubia houses and that of the city. The collection artistically depicts authentic architectural details and also includes a representation of lake Nasser through the use of a statement irregular Turquoise stone. Win For The

Miss Egypt World 2018

Bearing the crown of Miss Egypt World this year, Mony Helal, 26, has officially qualified to compete at the 68th Edition of Miss World Pageant. The pageant will be held on Sanya Island, China in December with up to 120 runners from across the globe. Drawing attention to charitable associations such as Misr Al-Kheir, Gannat Al-Kholoud and Baseera, Mony is more than just a beauty queen and we’re definitely all be rooting for her. We talked to the new beauty sensation as she prepares to take on her latest and most important challenge in her career yet.

What are your expectations going in to compete for Miss World? I’m expecting that getting out of my comfort zone will definitely lead to personal growth. I hope I will learn a lot about myself by testing my strengths and facing my weaknesses.

How has the preparation process been so far? I’ve been preparing for this pageant for the past two months while other beauty queens competing in Miss World have been coached for nearly a year! I have given my diet a complete makeover, missed social events for gym sessions, and have practiced walking until I blistered my feet. I’m dedicating my life to be fully prepared for this moment.

How does it feel to represent your country in the competition? Being crowned as Miss Egypt World 2018 and representing Egypt in Miss World is such a proud moment for me. I am so excited to take on such a big responsibility. I am proud that I’m contributing to the betterment of hundreds of charities and worthy causes, and even giving young girls a role model to look up to.

What do you hope to do with your platform? I hope to use my pageant experience to advance my modeling career and draw attention to the humanitarian and philanthropic activities I am passionate about. I have recently opened a talent and modeling agency in Dubai and when the right time comes, I hope to train other beauty queens for pageants.

We noticed that you’re also a microblading artist. How did you get into that? I was really interested in helping others feel beautiful and confident. I worked really hard to receive two certificates from Phibrows and was part of the very first group of “microbladers” in the Middle East. I also completed my training in nipple construction/3D nipple tattooing. My experience allows me to offer my services free of charge to people suffering from alopecia and cancer victims. #PayWithASmile

HOME

Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s Home Watsonia

It is only fitting that Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, a world-famous designer whose inspiration is derived from travel, a dedication to the pursuit of the finer things, and a passion for bringing beauty and serenity into the lives of the rich and famous, would have a Hollywood home with a vibrant history. Originally built in 1924 for a German silent movie director, its first inhabitant was actually the illustrious Rudolph Valentino. Following Valentino’s stay at this Whitley Heights oasis, Gloria Swanson made it her home twice; once in the early 1930’s and then again when she was filming Sunset Boulevard. Subsequent to Swanson, William Faulkner, playwright extraordinaire and writer, lived in the house utilizing it as a writing pavilion. It was on Lawrence-Bullard’s balcony that Faulkner wrote the award-winning screenplay for the film All About Eve.

47

Martyn, an artist in his own right who is a former model and a classically trained actor, understood the drama, romance, and mystique that this jewel of a property held. Lawrence-Bullard came to find “Villa Swason” while working with world renowned photographer Tim Street-Porter, who at the time was shooting Bullard’s work at the Pepsi-Cola Ranch in Sante Fe for Architectural Digest. The home felt “enchanted,” tucked neatly away in a cul-de-sac in Whitley Heights and possessed an aura of old Hollywood romance that struck a chord with Lawrence-Bullard. Purchased in 2003, it was clear to Lawrence-Bullard that the home needed a complete restoration and began with replacing the damaged wood floors with exquisite reclaimed antique wood from an old barn in Idaho. Antique French limestone and terracotta were chosen for the magnificent lush patios’ floors and in a surprising turn of events an original 19th century tile floor was uncovered in the kitchen.

49

The four-tiered gardens, hidden nooks, and seamless indoor/outdoor space consistently serve as an idyllic backdrop for wildly fantastic themed soireĚ es as well as intimate gatherings with celebrities such as Cher,Elton John,Ozzie Osbourne, Christian Louboutin, Tamara Mellon, and Christina Aguilera ( to name a few!).

51

For the interior, Lawrence-Bullard felt strongly about allowing the architectural style of the house to act as his guide. Every inch of the space is covered in exotic luxurious objects although the emphasis of the decor is on 18th century Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian furniture. Lawrence-Bullard meticulously selected each and every item, purchasing pieces from auction houses all over the United states as well as in Europe. However, the colour red serves as a unifying element in the space and was important to keeping an authentic Spanish Mediterranean flavour along with an array of colourful fabrics from his personal line. Tobacco-hued carved woods, sexy vibrant fabrics, and shimmering details of crystal and silver all work in harmony to deliver an enigmatic grounded sensuality that is the hallmark of Lawrence-Bullard’s work.

An unusual concept to some, everyone ought to adopt Lawrence-Bullard’s philosophy of living which is “there should not be anything in your house that you can’t use, drink from, sit on, or eat out of.” For Lawrence- Bullard, comfort is the key to the enjoyment of one’s home and as he says, “ it is all about living life, having fun, enjoying beautiful things, and loving living in Hollywood!” martynlawrencebullard.com

BOUTIQUE HOTEL

Haute Living Hotel Dress Code & Spa

Only in Paris: a bespoke boutique hotel where each of its 33 rooms is inspired by a famed French fashion designer. Are we in heaven? By Kate Dannies Designer: Stéphanie Coutas Photographer: Francis Amiand

Chanel doesn’t design hotels, but if it did, the result might look a lot like Hotel Dress Code & Spa. This getaway exudes all the style and grace you associate with Coco herself: Think chic monochrome patterns, fashion photography and hints of gold. Look closely, however, and you’ll spot design elements inspired by other fashion houses, like Hermès’ vibrant orange and Dior’s beloved houndstooth. Though there’s no actual dress code, you’ll certainly want to bring your most luxurious apparel – and not just to complement the property itself, either. The surrounding ninth arrondissement is chic as they come, with luxury stores, excellent restaurants and two convenient metro stations, as well as the famously opulent Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann. Fuel up for your fashionable days on a filling breakfast, served until 11am, and rest afterwards in the small wellness center.

The hotel is Stéphanie Coutas’s fourth hotel project, where she combines her expertise as a stylist with her mastery of interior architecture. No one could be better qualified for the project, which required intimate knowledge of both French fashion and interior design--and how to translate between the two to create stunning interiors. Coutas has not disappointed with Hotel Dress Code & Spa. Hotel Dress Code & Spa presides, appropriately, over the heart of Paris’s shopping district. Here, fashionistas can be inspired by their surroundings before heading out for a day at the shops. What could be better? Hotel Dress Code & Spa 5 rue Caumartin – 75009 Paris

DESIGN NOTES

Chez Margherita MISSONI

HOME

By Kate Dannies

It comes as no surprise that the residence of Margherita Missoni Amos--fashion heiress and home design extraordinaire--has given us the ultimate case of house envy. Deeply personal as well as stylish and comfortable, this is one casa a lot of us will be emulating.

Nestled in Varese, a city in the Alpine foothills about an hour’s train ride to the north of Milan, Missoni Amos’s country home is located close to her family and the family business, which was established in the area in 1953. Though Missoni’s iconic zigzag print is now synonymous with movie stars and European aristocrats, Varese remains slow and sleepy—the opposite of what most would consider a hot spot. Missoni Amos left Varese after high school, first for Milan, then on to Barcelona, New York, Paris, and Rome before coming back home to Milan. After she and Eugenio Amos, a race car driver, married, she craved a home where they could put down roots back in the place they grew up. So after finding the ideal site, the couple enlisted Milan-based architect Aldo Cibic to build a four-bedroom house there. Of course, Missoni Amos insisted on handling the interiors herself. The Missoni brand is known for its embrace of bold colors and contrasting prints, and this same ethos informs the look of the house. The daring Missoni design sense is evident throughout the house. A garden mural painted by Pictalab, an artist collective based in Milan, covers the dining room’s walls—and ceiling. Flamboyant marbles, including one nicknamed Missoni by the company that supplied it, and bold Josef Frank wallpapers for Svenskt Tenn define the bathrooms.

Missoni Amos’s office, where she displays her collections of daisies and Venetian masks, has a separate entrance so that she can conduct meetings without disrupting the rest of the house. (She has collaborations with contemporary brand Splendid, the handbag line Ximena Kavalekas, and swimwear company Mott50.) Amos has his own space, too: The garage, where he houses his car collection, is outfitted with a comfortable sofa and a bar. Every nook and cranny of this residence is packed with personality--we love how Missoni Amos has combined her intuitive sense of design with unique and beautiful objects that showcase her family’s interests and colourful aesthetic. All together, the house feels high design yet livable-much like her family’s famed Missoni knitwear.

EXHIBITIONIST

Etro Generation Paisley

Boutique designer Etro has long been known for their visionary designs, each piece blending anthropological exploration with the ideas and experiences of today. The Museum of Cultures in Milan was a natural fit to commemorate Etro’s first 50 years, as it shares the same spirit: the vocation for nomadism and an open attitude towards the wonders of the world. By Kate Dannies

Fittingly, paisley is the star of the show. Etro’s signature motif has been elevating luggage and apparel since the brand’s inception in 1968. While fashion takes centre stage, the designers take the time to pay tribute to the print’s history which has been traced back to ancient Mesopotamia. Visitors to the exhibition were invited to step into an opulent world of precious objects, rich textiles, and high fashion. The leafy branches of a giant tree set the stage at the entrance to the gallery. The root system then transforms into a dorsal feature that weaves over obstacles and through walls serving as a guide through the subsequent five rooms. A family business since the brand’s inception, each member of the Etro family contributes a unique point of view to their collections. Avid intellectuals and travellers all, the family’s diverse points of view elevate their designs into something extraordinary. The background and interests of each designer permeate every aspect of the exhibition and featured styles. 50 iconic outfits from different collections throughout the brand’s history were showcased throughout the exhibit. Each ensemble is delightfully animated by imaginative pairings with items from the

personal collection of the Etro family and precious objects from the museum itself. Weaving together the history and experiences that inspire each item and define the unique perspective of the brand. The backdrop of fabric covered walls, paintings, and carefully arranged mirrors contributed to an ambiance that is simultaneously estranging and comforting.

The overall effect was extremely absorbing. For Etro the cultural element is the founding principle and fashion is existential sensibility and content, not just form. Each element of the exhibition perfectly captured the brand’s storied past and extraordinary vision.

The Scoop On The Narrative Summit 2018

Under the auspices of Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, this year’s edition of the Narrative Summit for nation branding took place at the Four Seasons Nile Plaza on October 28th with the participation of two ministers and an impressive variety of local and international speakers from the most diverse fields, such as investment, fashion, entertainment, technology and economy. This edition’s speakers included Mahmoud Mohieldin, World Bank Group Senior Vice President, Sam Werberg, Press Attaché and Spokesperson at US Embassy Cairo, Ayman Baky, founder of Baky Hospitality and even Alia Abaza, designer and founder of Alia Abaza. On top of that, the two ministers who joined the conversation were Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly and Minister of Tourism Rania

Al-Mashat. While most speakers shared their success stories and personal vision to encourage progress, others discussed the common challenges faced by the country these days and ideas on how to improve Egypt’s brand image. A clear highlight of the summit was the speech by Moataz El Hout, CEO of Nestle in the North East Africa Region, who bridged the gap between the vision of nation branding and reality through the efforts of monitoring quality and improving the standard of “Made in Egypt” for people across the globe. Another powerful presentation was by Dr. Natalia Kanem, United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UNFPA, who talked about women empowerment and family planning. “The narrative continues because justice must take place by developing poor education, poor health care and poor families as they are the main aspects behind the development of nations.”

What’s more, an engaging panel discussion moderated by Jason Mackenzie, vice president of CIPR, featured four powerful, successful women, namely Egyptian Squash Star Raneem El Welily, Farzana Baduel, CEO of Curzon PR, Dina Saoudi, co-founder of Seven Circles and Seven’s World, and Amy Mowafi, CEO and co-founder of MO4 Network. The summit finally came to an end with two inspiring interviews with GFF’s Amr Mansi and beloved actress Nelly Karim. The Narrative Summit started out as an event supporting the movement to encourage and energize the notion of nation branding through creation and growing of leadership. Besides the patronage of the Egyptian government, there was also support by the UNFPA, US Embassy, SEBA, AUC, Injaz, EJB and Oxford Business Group this year, each of which provided a wide reach and the means to expose such a powerful message on global platforms. Interestingly enough, the summit is considered the first international meeting of public relations in Egypt. Organized by CC Plus, a corporate communications and media consultancy agency, the aim is to forge a new domain for experts and market leaders where they can talk about the unified front we need as a nation in order to enhance advancement opportunities and communicate a positive brand to the world.
