elcome to our new issue, fronted by an ethereal fairytale fashion shoot woven by designer Shahira Lasheen. Her latest couture collection titled Dieu De La Vie is aptly inspired by the sun-a perfect start to our Summer Issue.
This edition we shed light on Egyptian brands that are going global. These are the brands that are currently making waves at home and abroad. In “Egypt’s Most Wanted Design” we visit the Egyptian Pavilion in Manhattan where our country’s best design brands have participated in the exhibit-which marked the first time Egypt has taken part in the exhibit coinciding with the iconic Design Week. These include many of the brands that we love and have previously featured in FLAIR. These include SAL, Cairopolitan, Inca, Kilim, Asheya Tableware, and more. One of the participating brands as well was Reform Studio. Ever since they launched their business, the design duo behind Reform Studio have been advancing in steady strides. In “Reform X IKEA” we also focus on their latest venture with none other than retail giant IKEA. If you were a fan of the geometrical clutches of Sadafa, you will surely fall in love with the fresh take they did on their signature design. Inspired by the latest collaboration with Lebanese couture designer Aisha Ramadan, one of their new pieces is surely the je ne sais quoi item you need in your wardrobe this season. In “London Bound” we fly to the English capital. First up, luxury Jeweller Azza Fahmy continues their expansion with their latest opening of their first London pop up shop in the iconic Knightsbridge Department Store, Harrods. Next up, Maison Pyramide partners up with luxury retailer Harvey Nichols to set up a temporary shop in London with some of Egypt’s and the region’s most exciting and budding brands. On a personal note, this marks my last issue at the helm of FLAIR. It has been a great journey being part of this publication along with the wonderful team behind it. We hope that over the years we have managed to infuse a little bit of flair in your lives. Enjoy the summer, Hind El Ramly editor@flair-magazine.com

PERSON OF FLAIR
Acting Finesse Injy El Mokkaddem
Following her stunning performance as Sofia in last year’s Ramadan hit Eugenie Nights, Injy El Mokkaddem did a complete 180 for this season. Moving on from the Italian-speaking Sofia to the tenacious Safeya hailing from Upper Egypt, Injy has been lauded for her powerful performances in mastering both. At a media day at the grand Rossini restaurant in Heliopolis, we met up with the actress and spoke to her about her latest role as Safeya in Weld El Ghalaba. By Sarah Guirguis
How was it like to work with Ahmed El Sakka again? Ahmed is a good friend. He’s very talented and a popular star. I enjoy working with him because we have chemistry and he is a fun person to be around.
How did you prepare for Safeya’s role? I had to sit a lot with the director and I did a lot table reading. Of course, I also sat with the accent corrector Abd El Nabi El Hawari and practiced the Saeedi dialect. It took me two months to prepare for Safeya.
Maybe not necessarily through the characters that I play, but I personally see the responsibility in being a role model in my decision-making, in having a clear conscience at work and a clear and balanced way of thinking. Also, my discipline, my beliefs, my way of life and how I present myself. This is something I really care about. I always strive to be very honest with myself so I can be honest with people as well.
What are you up to next? The feature film Ras El Sana will be out in October so I’m currently waiting for that to drop. There are two projects I’ll be working on off-season but I’ve barely started work again.
In a previous interview, you mentioned taking home a part of every character you play. Which part will you be taking from Safeya?
Rapid Fire Questions
Her strength.
Tough question… Cersei
Reflect on the differences between Sophia and Safeya. Which one was more of a challenge for you?
•Favorite summer destination
Both roles were challenging for me. They are poles apart in social background and the circumstances they face. Although they come from two different worlds, they do share similar aspects- more or less. Both are very strong women who fiercely overcome big challenges in their lives, and they were both very challenging to portray.
What have you learned from the directors you’ve worked with throughout your career? Each one has their own style, vision and approach to work. Hany Salama is a very sensitive director and I learned that sensitivity aspect from him. Mohammad Sami always has a vision. He knows what he wants and makes it happen. He’s just very clear in what he wants. I definitely learned something new from everyone I worked with… and of course, from Mohamed Sakr in Ras El Sana. Each one has their own school of thought that I’ve learned to take on and adapt to.
What areas do you feel like you want to explore more/grow in as an actress? I want to take dance and singing classes because I really want to take part in a musical. It would be fun but completely out of my comfort zone.
How do you see your role in women empowerment in Egypt?
•If you could play a Game of Thrones character, which one would you be?
Spain
•Hobby that you’ll never give up Listening to music
•Hidden talent None
•Favorite Ramadan dish to cook Fattah
•The one makeup item you can’t live without Concealer
•Best gift you ever received Cards from my children
•Cinema or television? Cinema
•Fashion idol No one in particular
•If you weren’t an actress, what would you be? A singer, although my voice is terrible. I would’ve loved to have a nice voice.

INTERVIEW
Netflix Brings out the ‘Jinn’ Interview with the Cast
Following a lot of anticipation Netflix has finally released its first Arabic original series, Jinn. The teen supernatural thriller is a six-episode production that is set in Jordan. Featuring a bucket load of Middle Eastern talent, the series is executive produced by Elan and Rajeev Dassani, and comes to you by Lebanese director Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya and Jordanian screenwriter Bassel Ghandour. The young stars of the cast are made up of Salma Malhas, Hamzeh Okab, Sultan Alkhail, Aysha Shahaltough, Yasser Al Hadi and Ban Halaweh. We spoke to four of the stars of the series about their roles and their scary (yet exciting) experience as first-time set actors. Interviwed by: Eman Hassan Text by: Sarah Guirguis
Why did you want to be involved in this production? Aysha: It is very exciting. For me personally, I didn’t come across an opportunity like that in Jordan before, so when it came up, I definitely jumped at it. Salma: The whole time I was thinking I wasn’t going to get the role because thousands of people were probably auditioning for it. The risk was worth it though because I thought the show was very interesting. It’s not everyday that you find a series about teenagers in the Middle East, so I loved the idea of being a part of something so original. Hamzeh: This is the first time for me to act in front of a camera. I’ve been a part of school plays before but that’s about it. When this opportunity came, I really wanted to be involved. It is a special show because this is the first time we get to see an in-depth story all about teenage relationships in the Arab world. Sultan: For Netflix to make an Arabic original series with a full cast of teenagers; it is remarkable because it gives Arab youth a global platform. This was definitely worth being involved in.
Is there any pressure that comes with having a role on the first Arabic Netflix original series? Aysha: I think it’s an overstatement to say we are ambassadors for our country. We all make mistakes and so we only represent our own personal lives. I can’t add that type of pressure on myself, and feel like I’m being watched and have to act a certain way. Hamzeh: We partly feel like ambassadors because filming in Jordan has been a rare occurrence so far. Before the official announcement of the show, rumors were going around about the potential for the Middle East and the whole world to see the special parts of Jordan that we filmed in. Sultan: In Jordan, you find a variety of people from different nations. So if you live in Amman, it’s like any other capital city in the Arab world. It’s a special chance for us to get to represent the Jordanian culture, and on a bigger scale – the Arab culture.
What was it like filming in Jordan? Aysha: At first, I thought it was going to be a show about Bedouins. I also didn’t think I look like the typical Arab but they told us they’re not looking for a stereotypical look.
Sultan: As a Jordanian, the news that we were going to film in Jordan brought a lot of enthusiasm concerning this role. It’s good to present parts of Amman and Petra to people who don’t even know what they look like.
What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role? Salma: This was the first time for me to act on screen. Shooting on the first day was the most difficult because everyone around me seemed like professionals and I was still figuring out what to do and trying to understand the process of filming. I had only been a part of school productions up to this point. I had never actually acted in front of a camera. Aysha: For me, it was scary to go after something and not know where it will take me. I had never had a similar experience to compare it to, which is definitely exciting but also very scary.
Hamzeh: I was the last one to get casted. I didn’t even think I’d end up being a main character. They basically gave me a description of the main plot of Keras’ character and told me to improvise. I did a very bad job in the first week of workshops but then I started to speak with the writers and the producer to see the vision they had for my character. We combined my idea of Keras and their vision to produce a full-rounded character.
Tell us a bit about your character and how you relate to it. Salma: What I love about Mira is her confidence. I mean, I can stand up for myself, but not the way she can. She will do what’s right for her and for the people she loves. She’s very goal-oriented and she knows what she wants, and I think that’s something that a lot of people want but struggle to achieve. She’s not really seen as popular but she has a variety of friend-
19
ships because she doesn’t judge people for who they are or what their background looks like. During filming, I started seeing more of those connections between Mira and I, and I started noticing how she would react to different situations. Aysha: Vera is very confident and mysterious. She’s also very stubborn and she doesn’t care about making a scene or deceiving people until she gets what she wants. While auditioning, they told us that they were actually looking for our characters’ attributes in our real personalities so there is definitely a bit of Vera in me, although I’m not convinced we have a lot in common. Sultan: Yassin is a 17-year-old student who constantly deals with family and social struggles. He was an interesting character for me to play because he has a multi-layered, complicated personality as a result of what he goes through and his emotional side. I experienced bullying at school and so do many people, so it’s something a lot of people can relate to. There is no way you can play a character without finding anything in common with it. Otherwise, he would come across as a fake character to the people watching the show. Hamzeh: Keras is very odd and mysterious. He doesn’t know how to express his feelings, interact well with people or insert himself in conversations with other teenagers. I like that I could relate to him on a personal level. When I was younger, I didn’t speak Arabic and I was living in Dubai for the first fourteen years of my life before I moved to Jordan. I sounded like a foreign kid and I couldn’t express myself well to other students my age, so they would make fun of me, and it wasn’t a good feeling but I was able to portray it well while playing Keras.
If you could play any other character on this show, who would it be? Salma: After my first callback, they asked me who I liked the most - Vera, Mira or Layla. I liked Vera because she was like the dramatic, edgy girl who wants to achieve justice. Aysha: I would go for Mira because she’s a musician and I love music. We might as well switch places. Sultan: When I first came in, I actually auditioned to play Keras, and then auditioned for Fahed. But they suggested I try Yassin and something clicked, so he became
my character. As an actor, you’re up for anything. But if I weren’t to play Yassin, I would’ve definitely chosen Keras.
How was it like to go back to school after filming? Salma: In the beginning so many people thought I was an extra on the show because it is common for students at my school to be extras on TV shows. It’s something people don’t have on their grid because it has never happened before. My friend from America was actually telling me how it’s very normal there for most people to have one friend suddenly become big and famous. We’re not used to this culture here. Aysha: Even we didn’t know exactly what we were signing up for, and so it was hard for people to perceive that we are main characters on a Netflix show. Jinn is currently streaming on Netflix

‘WantedDesign’ Egyptian Pavilion in New York
Luxmar
Reform Studio
This year and for the first time, Egypt has participated in WantedDesign Manhattan during NY Design Week. The US Embassy in Cairo has supported the Egyptian pavilion titled, “(re)New (re)Work,” as part of its creative economy programs in Egypt. In partnership with the Egyptian government, the purpose of the pavilion is to create connections between creative entrepreneurs from all around the world and create room for creative and commercial collaborations. Appointed by the US Embassy in Cairo, The Industrial Modernisation Center, IMC, in Egypt is in charge of the pavilion in terms of contributing to the designers’ selection, developing the concept behind the pavilion and most importantly making sure that this experience adds to Egypt’s economic growth.
SAL
Asfour El Nil
Throughout the years, WantedDesign has become a hub for conversations, a gathering of international actors and a community rather than just a tradeshow. Bringing together design enthusiasts from all around the world for a celebration of global design and innovation, WantedDesign is one of the most sought after exhibitions worldwide.
“While selecting the designers, we made sure they all represent Egypt in terms of the local identity reflected in their designs. However, this was not our sole criteria; the selection was rather based on the function-ability, cost effectiveness and sustainability of the brands,” IMC marketing manager Nagwa Hussein said. Thirteen designers were carefully selected to represent contemporary Egyptian designs. From chairs and lighting units to rugs and accessories, what they all have in common is the aim of reviving traditional crafts while incorporating them in diverse innovative objects.
Shwekar Design
The works of the designers were showcased in a uniquely curated pavilion that reflects Egypt’s fine craftsmanship and materials to world-renowned designers, editors, curators and design appreciators. Every design product in the exhibit comes with a unique narrative rooted in contemporary Egypt’s cultural richness. These designers remake, renew, revive, rework and recycle materials, concepts and familiar objects in the process of making new appealing designs.

Furnhub
While the selected products are diverse in aesthetic, they all reflect how the designers and artisans are connected by their interest and passion for local materials and crafts. For example, the Sebertaya, which is a portable coffee maker traditionally made of copper, is elevated by FurnHub into a more impressive version made entirely by fine glass. The ubiquitous taxi sign placed on top of thousands of cars roaming the streets of Cairo is reimagined as a pouch for pens and pencils by Cairopolitan. The ancient tradition of weaving kilim rugs is invigorated with more precise craft, new patterns, fine materials and high levels of quality control by the socially responsible enterprise Killim. The common plastic bag is reworked by Reform Studio to become Plastex, a newly designed material made from reused plastic bags that prolongs the life cycle of plastic.
Kilim
Other designers investigate the ways in which Egypt’s mineral-based materials such as Marmar (soft alabaster), marble, brass and copper can be reworked into contemporary design objects rooted in Egyptian tradition. Sal’s Ore lights, for example, are purist in form and Egyptian in spirit. Luxmar’s table accessories recall ancient Egyptian jars while incorporating some modern design forms. Through the pavilion concept of “(re)New (re)Work,” the journeys of the designers featured and the stories behind their designs will be shared with an international audience, introducing them to a new generation of Egyptian designers who are strongly connected to their heritage, yet relevant to the contemporary design ethos. Hopefully it also becomes a networking opportunity that will open doors to new collaborations to finally serve the creative industry and innovative sector.

Reform x IKEA Introducing öVERALLT Out of ten of the top-grade African designers, the international award-winning sustainable lifestyle Egyptian brand Reform was handpicked by IKEA, along with four others, to design and launch their latest African-inspired collection, öVERALLT. To learn more about the contemporary African design scene, IKEA had joined forces with Design Indaba to pioneer the unique collaboration, where a selection of designers from five African countries within the fields of fashion, textile, architecture and furniture design, each teamed up with an in-house IKEA designer to create the new collection. A limited edition IKEA collection, öVERALLT is all about building bridges instead of walls to ultimately create room for better relations. Featuring a variety of products ranging from furniture, tableware and textiles to fashionable sustainable tote bags, the African collection stems from the cultural concept of reusing in Africa. In Egypt, for example, it comes naturally for most people to reuse products in different forms, whether it’s reusing jars or boxes for an entire lifetime or constantly feeling the need to revive a piece of furniture. Reform created four unique pieces out of the collection; a fashion tote that comes in two sizes, a rug and a cushion. The öVERALLT tote which is ideal for the beach or a city stroll, is a tote on a sustainable mission, making a statement that you can be fashionable and ecofriendly at the same time. Believe it or not, the shimmery woven strips of thread-like material are actually made from waste material of crispy packaging production found in chocolate bars or chips’ bags. Although considered one of the toughest and most stubborn materials to recycle, Reform defeated all odds and found a way to reuse the material to design the totes and the cushion. The packaging waste comes in the form of long threads, which are then weaved on handlooms to create intricate designs. In making the rug, Reform used the same packaging waste and included hemp material, a textile that gives you that tough

and bristly texture. As for the gorgeous cushions, they’re designed in aquatic colors perfect for outdoor summer furniture, especially if paired with the authentic flat woven rug. Aiming to break the common stereotypes and limited perspective people have about Africa and African creativity, the collection tells the stories of African pioneering designers and how their different cultural traditions and craftsmanship techniques are reflected in their creations. Hend and Mariam, the fierce female duo behind Reform Studio, are the minds constantly working to fabricate new eco-materials to be implemented in different applications. “We believe that design can solve stubborn problems. Reform is an umbrella of many ‘Re’s’- a recreation of an existing idea, a redevelopment of objects, a reusing of materials, a reviving of cultures and reforming of our world,” they said. The brand launched after the 2011 revolution in Egypt when the cofounders were excited to be part of the change around them and eager to make a stand and make a difference. With the motivation to solve some of Egypt’s major problems, they invented Plastex, a brand new material made from reused plastic bags. The idea is to prolong the life cycle of plastic bags before they are labeled ‘trash’. Promoting ethical design, all their products are handmade and ecofriendly made out of upcycled plastic bags and highend materials.

Here Comes the Sun Shahira Lasheen’s Dieu De La Vie By Sarah Guirguis
Relentlessly exceeding high expectation and making jaws drop with her remarkable handmade embroidery, Shahira Lasheen is out with her latest and our favorite collection to date. The newest haute couture collection titled Dieu De La Vie is a pure spectacle embracing a much bolder color palette than all her previous work. Often influenced by the world’s wealth of timeless paintings and novels, Shahira Lasheen is an artist who utilizes dreamy color palettes and lavish fabrics to unfold stories of surreal beauty. Founded in 2015, the design label specializes in Haute Couture and Pret-a-Porter, as well as majestic bridal designs.
29
The women who Lasheen envisions her newest creations on are massive stars leading center-stage. On her muse, she told us, “The center of inspiration for Dieu De La View is the powerful and invincible sun as a metaphor for strong women with their ability to multitask, guide their families and achieve their dreams. This haute couture collection depicts cosmic power and its magnificent implications.” Between yellow, orange and red, the Dieu De La Vie collection follows the sun’s spectrum as it circulates the globe. While current trends champion structured coats and tailored suiting, this S/S19 collection runs further with these two silhouettes taking them to the realm of illustrative fantasy. The sharpness of the sun’s rays, for example, was translated into high-collar designs and bold pleating while ancient symbols and vibrant colors informed the design details.

Satin Roses HEARTBREAKER By Sarah Guirguis
With a resonant image in New York and a heart for Egypt and the Middle East, Egyptian designer and US-based talent Amanda Kamhawy is back with a new striking collection. Titled the Heartbreaker collection, its theme is all about nightlife, going out and feeling great. Oozing with partying summer vibes, the collection is characterized with bold hues such as gold and silver. It also has some neutrals such as black and white for a more toned-down party look. This will mark the first time that a Satin Roses collection will be available for sale in Egypt. “Being able to work in Egypt and the United States is really the best of both worlds,” Kamhawy told us. Although New York is her base, she likes coming back to Egypt for its interesting shoot locations. On her favorite part about being a fashion designer, she said, “Envisioning myself as a designer since the age of eight has really set me up for the path that I am paving. As a designer, I love draping. It’s something that I truly enjoy. It’s also an amazing feeling when I see my clothes featured in magazines, on TV and on celebrities.” Instead of following the fast track, ever-evolving trends of the fashion world, Kamhawy stands out by creating her own lane and trusting her spontaneous sense of fashion. At the end of the day, she depends on her customers’ loyalty to the brand and continues to see a bright future for her budding label in Egypt, Dubai and the Middle East. Starting July, the collection will be available online. Stay tuned to the Satin Roses Instagram account for more details. www.satinrosesclothing.com

Egyptian athleisure luxury brand Ohanna has launched its latest spring/summer collection titled The Great Green. Since its launch, the Alexandria-born brand has been keen on paying tribute to thousands of years of human civilization as their clothing lines “embodies the metamorphosis of Ancient Egyptian designs from temple wall art to modern patterns and refined motifs”. Despite that, Ohanna looks for the future making clothes for the modern and working woman. Drawing its name from the ancient Pharaonic name for the Mediterranean Sea, the collection is inspired by its translucency and restlessness effect. Combining nature and history, the collection is made up of transformable pieces that are perfect for this summer. Utilizing sheer and spacer fabrics, The Great Green pieces embody the translucent effect of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, the lining patterns combine elements that powerful Egyptian queens like Isis, Cleopatra, and Hatshepsut believed in and used. These include the Wings of Isis that symbolized power and magic, and the Eye of Horus that symbolized protection, royal power, and good health. Using all shades of the sea, The Great Green color palette includes white, green, blue, and black. The collection features a variety of transformable pieces with different colors that can be deconstructed and styled differently giving women the chance to flaunt and express themselves in various styles. The “ATEN” jacket and corset tube set comes in white with neon stripes inspired by the sunrays. The “KIYA” playsuit and shorts both come in neon green and draw its name after the ancient Egyptian queen, Kiya. The “ANEKSI” white pants that can be transformed by zipping the front of the pants to showcase the inside patterns for an extra edge. The “MEDITERRA” white dress and top that can be transformed through the shoulder zippers and turned into an off-shoulder look. The “LAPIS” duo which draws its name after the very previous ancient Egyptian stone, Lapis, features a set of cool joggers and a jacket that comes in translucent blue, same color as the lapis stone. Sky High
London’s Centre Point
One of London’s most iconic landmarks has finally been transformed into 82 stunning homes, including a spectacular duplex penthouse. The tallest – and only – luxury residential building of its kind in the area, the home in Centre Point is truly unique. The building was originally built in 1966, having been commissioned by Harry Hyams and designed by Richard Seifert. Having acquired the building in 2011, Almacantar appointed Conran and Partners and Rick Mather Architects (now MICA) to restore the London landmark by taking into account the character of the building, its unique position on London’s skyline and the dynamic surrounding area. Situated in the cultural heart of London’s famous West End, the building’s personality comes from its texture, which creates a deep three-dimensional pattern of shadow and light. This movement from shadow to light is the inspiration behind the Conran & Partners-designed interior.
