GET TO KNOW THE AREA

History

PRIOR LAKE Prior Lake History

From 1870 to the 1920s there was little growth in Prior Lake. it was primarily a farming community that attracted summer residents along its shores and at the Grainwood hotel. the 1920s to 1950s saw Prior Lake as a typical small american town experiencing the major events surrounding two World Wars. From World War ii to 1960, Prior Lake experienced moderate growth with the lake being a major recreational facility. From 1960 to present, Prior Lake experienced great growth, becoming a suburban/bedroom community with the lake and hwy. 13 development as the greatest catalyst for growth. inevitably, a general store and post office marks the beginnings of a town. Both spring Lake and Prior Lake Villages had their start in this manner. then the routing of the railroad in 1871, cutting Prior Lake in two, ended the hopes of spring Lake. thus, the village, post office and lake were all named in honor of Charles h. Prior, who in 1871-86 was superintendent of the Minnesota division of the Milwaukee rr. however, long before the railroad was laid, Neal and Malcalm McColl, whose father had settled in eaglecreek township in 1855, had built and managed a store on the site where Carpenter’s hardware is now. Prior Lake was platted in 1871; and the post office in which Malcalm McColl was Postmaster, was opened in the McColl store.

since McColl’s store had burned in 1876, a.F. arndt and Fred ellis had operated a store where Monnen’s Food Market stands. a. F. arndt, succeeding Malcalm as Postmaster, dissolved his partnership with Fred ellis, built a new store and moved the post office to that building where it remained until 1935. Four years after Prior Lake became a village, the Grainwood hotel, catering to wealthy socialites from the east and as far south as the Gulf states, opened on May 15, 1879. this hotel offered accommodations for about 150 guests with cottage facilities as well. due to differences in train schedules of the Milwaukee and omaha railroads, the hotel maintained its own horse-drawn bus, seating ten persons, which traveled to Barden twice a day to meet the morning and evening trains. this hotel burned in 1894 early in the spring. Mrs. Bowles, who had succeeded W.e. hull as owner, had it rebuilt at once and continued to operate it. For forty years, one of the finest resorts in Minnesota, the Grainwood hotel declined in status after 1920 when northern resorts offered better prospects to summer travelers. it never regained its importance, and in 1923 it burned to the ground. Mrs. Van slack, wife of the owner at that time, had been W.e. hull’s daughter, and she had known her father’s house in its grandeur. it was never rebuilt.

credit river township History

early settlers in Credit river township, had they heard the adage “luck o‟ the irish,” may at first have thought it true. these irish immigrants, having left their homeland to escape the ravages of the potato famine, were grateful to have happened upon fertile farmland at the eastern end of scott County. Better yet, the land was free, offered by the government to anyone who would clear and farm it. But lucky? Yes and no. the homesteader discovered quickly that the task ahead - grubbing out a home and living from the bare land – was anything but easy. still, life was rich and full, largely because they lived in a community with other irish farmers. although the population has increased considerably today, the township remains the same rural community it always was.

Lakeville history

Lakeville had its origins back in 1853 when Captain William B. dodd designed and directed the construction of a road that would serve as a practical land route connecting the military forts in st. Paul and Faribault. shortly after the road was built, J.J. Brackett, who transported mail, supplies, and travelers along this route, chose Lakeville as an ideal site for a town because it was roughly halfway between st. Paul and st. Peter. Griffin Phelps, who worked for Brackett, is believed to have been the first real settler. in 1855, Brackett platted 250 acres and named it Lakeville because it was near Prairie Lake, now known as Lake Marion. By 1858, the tiny town of Lakeville, located near the intersection of today’s Co. rd. 50 and dodd Blvd., contained a general store, two hotels, a boarding house, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, and a shoe shop. When the hastings and dakota

railroad line was built in 1869, railroad officials tried to buy land in Lakeville to build a depot. the owner refused to sell, so the railroad bought 20 acres a half a mile east, put up a platform and named the area Fairfield. it wasn’t long before existing businesses moved from the original town site to Fairfield, and new businesses were also established at the new town site. it took nine years for business owners and residents to get Fairfield’s name changed to Lakeville. in 1878, they decided they wanted a government separate from Lakeville township, which encompassed the rural area, and sought incorporation as the Village of Lakeville. agriculture was the major industry, with several grain mills that handled crops grown by area farmers and a creamery that made cream into butter. the population at the turn of the 20th century was 373.
