The Grand Haven Pier and Lighthouse make beautiful backdrops as you walk along the Lake Michigan shoreline. For the locals, every day that you walk the boardwalk is another day you’re on vacation. The St. Louis location is in Eureka, Missouri. Either of these amusement parks are a great choice for a day of family fun in the summertime. Pick the closer of the two (to you) and head out for an amazing day of thrill rides and other attractions. Six Flags has many different events going on during the summer, such as national funnel cake day, holiday celebrations, coasters after dark, and longer summer operating hours. At the Chicago location, thrill rides include the American Eagle, the Demon, and Goliath. Six Flags St. Louis features different roller coasters that will deliver an equally thrilling adrenaline rush, including the Screamin’ Eagle, Boomerang, and American Thunder, another classic wooden coaster with drops getting up to 50 miles per hour! The water park is also a favorite here, with the lazy river at Gully Washer Creek, or for the water-loving daredevil, the Bonzai Pipeline, a 60story waterslide that drops you out of a tube with a trap door at nearly 40 miles per hour! College Towns

Spend a sunny, summer afternoon

at the Terrace at Memorial Union, where the chairs are just as colorful as the company you’ll keep. Madison, Wisconsin, home to The UW (University of Wisconsin), is definitely the place to be for college town food fixes. The UW singlehandedly dominates the culture of Madison, and even the surrounding smaller cities. The eccentric, “keep-warm-but-stay-cool” vibe of the city is perhaps what is most intriguing. However, the bars and annual events make this college town a top pick across the country. What kid doesn’t want to leave school and get out? A UW kid!

TERRACE AT MEMORIAL UNION

Spend a sunny, summer afternoon at the Terrace at Memorial Union, where the chairs are just as colorful as the company you’ll keep. Frequented by staff and students alike, you can enjoy live music and good food, followed by a hot coffee or a cold beer; your choice. If you are looking to wrap up your Madison endeavors by taking part in the fine-dining world, try a meal at L’Etoile, an award-winning seasonal restaurant run by Chef Tory Miller and his sister. Chef Tory has been churning out creations that not only leave customers satisfied with awe, but also spark up in-depth conversations in foodie media. Put on your fancy clothes and sit down for the seven course chef’s tasting menu, available with a wine pairing. L’Etoile certainly doesn’t scream “college kid friendly,” so it may be a nice change in atmosphere for the seasoned traveler and foodie adventurist. MADISON, WISCONSIN

ndiana is home to some of the most beautiful land, the greatest people, and the best things to do! Check out what makes this state worth exploring. Head to Evansville for their 5 different cultural districts, all with something to offer every visitor. The Downtown, Haynie’s Corner Arts, North Main Street, University, and West Franklin Street districts are overflowing with events and things to do, from checking out the college scene, to enjoying local art and history. The Downtown district has plenty of hotels, complete with skywalks, as well as locally-owned restaurants and bars, and classic Victorian architecture to view.

Haynie’s Corner

Turoni’s Pizza & Brewery Stop in at Turoni’s Pizza & Brewery for a slice and beer and watch for bikes! Everyone likes to go green lately, so you’ll notice bikeways and pedestrian lanes everywhere.

Haynie’s Corner is “where the artists play,” and they mean this quite literally, as the outdoors have become more like extended common areas for locals to gather and share their work. Enjoy the sound of jazz music on weekend afternoons and stop in a local pub for a beer while you view art from the streets. North Main Street is the hip area, where the cool kids hang out, so if you’re trendy, head here. There are always new bars and restaurants popping up, as well as a few local long-time favorites. Stop in at Turoni’s Pizza & Brewery for a slice and beer and watch for bikes! Everyone likes to go green lately, so you’ll notice bikeways and pedestrian lanes everywhere. The University district is actually quite the opposite from what one would normally expect in a college setting. There is a ton of greenery, with the nearby Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, and the architecture on campus is spectacular. The Wesselman Woods is one of the “largest urban old-growth forests in the country.” Here, you can take a long nature walk in an untouched woodland area without being disturbed, and then head to one of the other districts for a bite to eat.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The Canal Walk is refurbished from its original build and is now blooming with cyclists and pedestrians. It is perfect for sightseeing and enjoying the fresh Indiana air. If you’d rather be swinging through the air than simply breathing it, try out the Go Ape Treetop Adventure. Admission is between $30-$60 and is recommended for ages ten and up. During the adventure you can swing from and fly through the canopies for a day, feeling as free as a bird.

Go Ape Treetop Adventure

If you’re looking for something to do as far as events go, West Franklin is the place to be. This is where Mardi Gras, Independence Day celebration, Nut Club Fall Festival, and Dickens Christmas are all held. So, if hot street food and live music is your thing, this district is for you. Indianapolis is the largest city in Indiana, which is why it isn’t hard to find something you’ll like to do there. Nature walks and outdoors events are popular here in the summer, so try the Canal Walk when you visit.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a great way to introduce yourself to the Midwest’s need for speed. Make your way here this summer or fall. Want to get in on the action? Try the Brickyard Crossing golf course, where four holes are set up inside the actual speedway! You’ll get the adrenaline rush from the racecars, and simultaneously get to relax on the course. Enjoy epic views and layouts, as the course was designed by famous architect Pete Dye. You can schedule Tee Time up to 45 days in advance, and you will need to call ahead to make sure you’re not trying to visit on a blackout date. Blackout dates are subject to change, but when races are active, the course will not be open.

Bloomington is another great Indiana town. Bloomington is centered around its school, Indiana University. Indiana University has been around nearly as long as the town and the county of Monroe, itself, with foundation in 1820, only two years after Bloomington. The large limestone buildings of the campus provide art and structure simultaneously, and the history of Indiana University and Bloomington seems to come alive within the architecture. Indiana University is known for its basketball, so there are plenty of local hang-outs that cater to school spirit. Make your way to Nick’s English Hut, and icon in and of itself, that has been in business for over 80 years.

There are a ton of TVs all around the restaurant and bar, so watching the game is both easy and enjoyable. Choose from a wide variety of bar food, including burgers and sandwiches, like the Italian Beef or Nick’s Panini of the Day. All of the meats are locally sourced, and the food is always fresh. Grab a beer and kick back here for a few hours to get a feel for authentic Bloomington living. Looking for a bit of romance and elegance in Indiana? Book a stay at the French Lick Resort. For many years, the French Lick Resort has been known as one of the best resorts of the entire Midwest. With two award-winning hotels, a Pete Dye Golf Course voted #1 in Indiana, a casino, a pet-friendly and kid-friendly policy, and plenty of seasonal events, it’s no surprise that French Lick is the number one pick for visitors looking to have the time of their lives in the lap of luxury. The West Baden Springs Hotel brings you “old world luxury,” while the French Lick Springs delivers a “classic and traditional” feel. Whichever hotel you choose to stay at, you can opt for package deals or special events discounts, which will usually come with a variety of extra goodies during your stay. Get your game on at the casino, with access to colorful slots, blackjack, craps, roulette, poker, and more. The casino alone is made up of just over 50,000 fun-filled square feet. Disc Jockeys and live bands provide music and entertainment, and the lounge is great for sitting back and chatting with a drink. Or, opt for relaxation and head to the spa to soak in a “legendary Pluto mineral bath.” Horseback riding is also a beautiful option this time of year. With so many amenities to offer, French Lick will not let you down, no matter what occasion you’re booking a stay for.

WHETHER YOU WANT TO EXPLORE THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF INDIANA, OR RELAX AND ENJOY THE COUNTRYSIDE, THE HOOSIER STATE HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY!

ESCAPE Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

One great way to enjoy water in the Midwest is by visiting one of the Great Lakes. Check out Lake Erie! Lake Erie has a scenic tour that surrounds the entire lake, so if you’re just wanting to drive for the great views, head that way. Otherwise, check out Cleveland. Situated right on the lakeshore, and known as a lakeside city, Cleveland has so much to offer. Visit the Cleveland Aquarium, to stay with the water theme, or head to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a musical escape.

While you’re on the shoreline, stay on track by visiting Lakeside, Ohio, where you’ll be in the Lakeside Community of Chautauqua. This historic community offers up tons of fun things to do to create the perfect summer experience, so a Great Lakes tour would not be complete without them. Purchase a Summer Chautauqua Pass to explore all of the events going on during their peak season. From lectures and worship services, to relaxing days on the shore with live music and automobile shows, a day spent in the Lakeside community is a memorable. Enjoy wooden boat rides and sunset cruises on the lake, and be sure to catch a summer concert in the park or a garden tour.

Lake Huron makes for a great weekend on the water. Lake Huron is known for shipwrecks and mystery, and is the 2nd largest of the Great Lakes. More than 1,000 shipwrecks have been recorded in the lake, which reaches over 20,000 square miles of surface area. 30 lighthouses stand on Lake Hurons shorelines, so a scenic drive and a day on the water are both great ways to enjoy the scenery. If you have a heart for the outdoors, ride your bike along the shores of Lake Huron and the established trails to really get a feel for the surrounding nature. Visit the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where you can take a shipwreck tour with spectacular views from a glass-bottom boat. The Alpena Shipwreck Tour will take you along the clear water while you learn about the history and significance of each wreck, including: The Bay City Shipwreck, Haltiner Barge Shipwreck, Harvey Bissell Shipwreck, Steamer Monohansett Shipwreck, Shamrock Shipwreck, and the William P. Rend Shipwreck.

FUN

Or, take a drive to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which was named the “Most Beautiful Place in America” by ABC’s Good Morning America. A parking pass for the lakeshore is $15, and with that you’ll be able to enter the rich world of Michigan’s natural history. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a must-do activity. Nearly 8 miles long, this drive will take you through the loops and whirls of the Beech Maple Forest, and you’ll get to view the Glen Lakes and the dunes from several look-out stops along the drive, feasting your eyes on pillows of sand, gentle waves, and native vegetation. For a few more dollars, stop at the store and grab some picnic essentials, and when you reach the end of the drive you can set up a personal picnic and enjoy the scenery while you take in the all the natural beauty. Now that’s what we call a weekend escape!

Museums and locales like Canyons of the Ancients remind us of our roots and inspire us to continue advancing by pushing the boundaries of our limitations further and further out. We believe that Colorado’s progressive attitude serves visitors an endless array of unique activities to test out. As such, there is plenty to do in the Centennial State: explore local farmers’ markets that pop up every week; take a dip in a coveted hot spring to escape the cold; camp outdoors in Cañon City where the weather is actually still warm; tour a variety of craft distilleries and breweries to discover your inner sommelier; or fly across the sky in a hot air balloon.

CLARKSVILLE, TN

Adventure THROUGH HISTORY IN CLARKSVILLE, TENN.

The Cumberland and Red Rivers merge in the heart of the Clarksville, Tenn., very near where the city was founded in 1784 -- 12 years before Tennessee’s statehood. Today, a fully-developed Cumberland RiverWalk meanders around this juncture, and an enclosed RiverCenter illustrates Clarksville’s history and development. The city’s tobacco-built history is still evident in “ghost advertising” from building advertisements targeting river traffic, as well as existing tobacco warehouses. Try a leisurely downtown walking tour to admire the city’s historic churches, buildings and residences, many of which were built in 1878 following a massive fire. Most noteworthy are the eclectic architecture of the Customs House Museum, built in 1898 as a post office, the Montgomery County Courthouse, and the art-deco Roxy Regional Theatre. Clarksville’s military history spans from the Revolutionary War era through modern conflicts. The remarkably well-preserved Fort Defiance Civil War Park was constructed as a defensive fort in 1861 by Confederate troops to control the river approach to Clarksville. Reenactment events throughout the year give visitors a glimpse of life during Civil War days. A drive into rural Montgomery County transports visitors to a mid-19th Century pioneer settlement at Historic Collinsville. This 40-acre site features 16 authentically restored log buildings dating from 1830-1900. Each structure is filled with authentic furnishings.

Dunbar Cave, at over eight miles in length, is one of the largest in Montgomery County. Part of a 144acre state park, the cave entrance remains 58 degrees year around. In the 1930s the cave became a hotspot for local bands and other entertainment. In 1948, country music legend Roy Acuff bought the property and staged his Saturday Night Radio Dance Broadcast from the site. Today, state park rangers offer programming

year around, including guided cave tours certain times of the year. A short drive northwest of Nashville along I-24, Clarksville’s central location makes the city an ideal destination for families looking for a mix of history, education, outdoor adventure, great food, and outstanding cultural opportunities. DULUTH, MN

SEVERAL YEARS AGO.... I read about Duluth in a mountain bike magazine. In fact, it would be stories such as this feature that ultimately fueled much of what drives me professionally today: the constant pursuit of proverbial “diamonds in the rough.” While Duluth continued to gain notoriety in the years following that story, to me it largely remained a mystery situated on a lake I knew very little about, amidst a culture I knew virtually nothing of. Then one day, I finally paid this place a visit. Duluth is long and narrow, stretching 27 miles, rarely exceeding a mile at its widest point. Throughout the city and surrounding area you can find plenty of great trails to ride, and great places to refuel with a beer afterwards, but as I plan my next trip to Duluth, it’s the stuff on the west side of town I look forward to most. The Lincoln Park Craft District is home to some of the best flavors I can remember in a very long time. The area is loaded with great places to shop, drink and eat, especially OMC Smokehouse which might have the best BBQ I’ve ever tasted. Just around block, Bent Paddle Brewery deserves a special nod as they’re ardent supporters of the local mountain bike community. In addition to producing top notch brews this convenient location is perfect if meat and beer help you with your post-ride recovery. A few doors down you’ll find Lake Superior Brewing Co., Ursa Minor Brewing and Duluth Cider. Amazing breweries populate the entire city, to see a full list check out www.visitduluth.com. Trails on this side of town certainly match the quality of the beer and food as well, with three distinctive places to play aboard your bike. Piedmont is an allmountain paradise, featuring trails with plenty of technical options including steep rock rolls, tight switchbacks, and loads of natural features to take off from. There is also Spirit Mountain Bike Park, which serves up the most progressive trails in the area, from hypersmooth flow and jump trails, to properly rowdy downhill tracks. If you’re looking for a more mellow experience on singletrack, then you should head to Mission Creek, where the mostly smooth trails provide miles of flowy and scenic fun.

A look at Duluth's mountain bike and beer scene provides a glimpse at a deep-rooted history, an inspiring present, and a future as big as the lake this town was built upon. I for one am very much looking forward to my next visit.

PLYMOUTH, WI

cheese

ca p i ta l of the world. A place of rich, German heritage.

A town where children choose to remain, raise families, and a few generations later, they are happy they stayed close to their roots. Yet, it’s where kind hearted souls welcome brand new families both into their community and everyday lives. Our town is Plymouth, and we’re very proud of it. Located in southeastern Wisconsin, Plymouth upholds small town, Midwestern values; where else will you find Antoinette, a fiberglass Holstein cow statue, weighing over 1,000 pounds, built in acknowledgment of the cheese making industry? And the brick exteriors of local businesses featuring the 25 murals that the Walldogs, a group of artists from around the world, painted in the summer of 2011 shouldn’t be missed?

Without a doubt, it’s these tangible aspects and strong sense of community that give Plymouth the unique charm that entices visitors to return again and again. However, they’re not the only ones who’ve noticed our great town; in the spring and summer of 2014, comedian John McGivern and host of the PBS show Around the Corner with John McGivern, which chooses one Wisconsin town to explore per episode, visited Plymouth to capture our agriculture, business, and education. In a town of about 8,500, one can expect the friendliness, camaraderie, and closeness that coincide with knowing your neighbors. Our small businesses embody this as well.

Manhattan, KS

When customers enter a store, whether the establishment offers one-of-a-kind antiques, boutique and consigned clothes, or paintings and handmade art, they can expect to be treated with casual conversation and the upmost professional care in conjunction with quality products and a homey atmosphere. Despite all the progress within our industries, locals aren’t all work and no play; Plymouth boasts many special events throughout the year for its citizens. In fall, Homecoming is king; the high school’s week of festivities like Powderpuff and Boys’ Volleyball, the pep rally, parade, football game, and dance are great fun for students, parents, and all community members. On Thanksgiving weekend, everyone enjoys the Christmas parade. Whether it’s just coat weather or a freezing winter wonderland, the turnout is always impressive. For New Years’, a wacky tradition called “The Cheese Drop” draws crowds as an 80-pound Styrofoam cheese wedge is slowly lowered around midnight.

In Wisconsin, spring is probably the most beloved season. But the biggest sign of changing seasons isn’t weather, but the opening of everyone’s favorite locally owned drive-in burger joint, Chester’s. Come May, parade time rolls around again with Memorial Day. In summer, the Chamber of Commerce puts on the annual Mill Street Festival, a day filled with music, food, and shopping along Mill Street. In late summer, adults socialize at the Jazz Crawl, a night of dancing, food and wine, and jazz music. Plymouth

also is fortunate to host the Sheboygan County Fair. With fair food, rides, games, animal showings, derbies and rodeos, and the art and food competitions, there’s something for everyone. When it comes to vacationing spots in the Midwest, nothing beats Plymouth, Wisconsin. Let us show you what makes the cheese capital of the world worth seeing. Let us share our stories. Here and only here can you enter as a tourist and leave feeling like a local. Visit us. Experience our culture. Travel Midwest | Summer/Fall 2019 | 89

Manhattan, KS LIBERAL, KS

LIBERAL, IN SOUTHWEST KANSAS

still honors its early friendly and hospitable beginnings of making visitors feel welcome. Before Liberal was a town, it was known as the place of the "Liberal Well” where pioneer, S.S. Rogers, offered free water to travelers. Today Liberal offers more than just a cool drink of water. Mid-America Air Museum displays more than 100 aircraft and is one of the country’s finest aviation exhibits. The museum has an incredible collection of small aircraft mostly donated by retired Air force Lieutenant Colonel Tom A. Thomas, Jr. A self-guided tour gives visitors a chance to see some very rare aircraft such as the smallest ever ‘Air Force One’ plane, used by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Dorothy’s official hometown of Liberal celebrates clicking your heels three times and saying “There’s No Place Like Home” at Dorothy’s House and the Land of Oz. Guides, sometimes dressed as Dorothy, escort visitors down the yellow brick road, through the house and the Land of Oz. At the end of the tour, OZ memorabilia, including the original model of Dorothy’s house used in the 1939 filming of the “The Wizard of Oz,” is on display. Coronado Museum offers a collection of items dating back to 1541 when Don Francisco Vasquez de Coronado’s quest to find the fabled “Seven Cities of Gold.” A Spanish horse bit is on permanent display at the museum. Exhibits used in the settlement of the Kansas Territory are on display as well as those paying tribute to the culture of the Native Americans. The Baker Arts Center gallery features local and regional artists as well as national traveling exhibits. Guests are encouraged to browse through the extensive art library or purchase items in the sales gallery. Throughout the year the Center sponsors events, workshops, musical evenings and much more.

Visitors can join International Pancake Race festivities on Shrove or "Fat" Tuesday. Pancake Day begins with an “all you can eat” breakfast followed by races for all ages. The main event is the International Race when women from Liberal compete against women of Olney, England, racing down the street with skillet and pancake in hand. Times of the winners are compared during a live web chat and the international winner is announced. Activities continue with a Shriving Service and parade. Ten miles northeast is the Arkalon Wildlife Area especially known for its birding. The park also offers campsites for RV’s and tents, hiking trails, playground and fishing. Other attractions are three golf courses, Adventure Bay Family Water Park, bowling alley, miniature golf course and movie theater. Be sure to see the World's Largest Book on the front of Memorial Library.

Dynamic visual arts dot the landscape across the community, from the SculptureTour Salina outdoor exhibit downtown, to murals and intriguing installations.

Salina’s love of the arts culminates with the Smoky Hill River Festival the second full weekend of June each year.
