COME EXPERIENCE

the wonders of the natural world

B R O W N C O U N T Y S TAT E PA R K The Brown County State Park, located in Indiana, is a beautiful choice if you’re looking for the best of both worlds. The miles and miles of untouched forest meets Nashville, Indiana, a small, yet uniquely original artist’s-colony style town, complete with bed and breakfasts, lodging, eclectic activities, and plenty of accommodations for the outdoor enthusiast. Mountain biking is a popular pastime in the area, and with over 25 established miles of terrain and trails to ride through, it is no wonder why people are heading to the state park. The Brown County State Park is Indiana’s largest, and the mountain biking trails have been designed “by mountain bikers, for mountain bikers,” so if you’re looking for an authentic ride, this is the place to go. There are plenty of other activities to participate in within the park, such as fishing, camping, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, picnicking, and more. If you’re interested in staying for a little while, try the Abbey Inn & Suites, the Hickory Shade Motel, or the Abe Martin Lodge, which is actually lo-

cated inside of the park, instead of on the outskirts. This allows you to be fully submersed in the beauty of Brown County State Park, without having to make a day trip out of it each morning. The Abe Martin Lodge is actually named after a cartoon character from the 1900s that was published in the Indianapolis newspaper. Inside the lodge, you’ll notice the Little Gem Restaurant, a full-service restaurant that also offers a buffet and salad bar. There is free coffee 24/7 at the lodge and WiFi for those that simply cannot disconnect. The lodge and the restaurant have quaint, small-town, rustic charm, and the views are incredible! There are also cabins available in case you wish to stay in a more secluded area away from the main lodge and cook your own meals. The park offers completely primitive camping, as well as campgrounds with electricity and amenities. Depending on what you’re searching for during your vacation, you’ll surely find your niche in an area of the Brown County State Park.

P I C T U R E D R O C K S N AT I O N A L L A K E S H O R E Are you hoping for a pristine beach in the middle of the Midwest? Head to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore for some of the most beautiful waterfront scenery around. The national lakeshore offers over a 100 miles of hiking trails and the summertime holds perfect weather for splashing and sunbathing. The lakeshore is open year round, 24 hours a day – weather permitting. During the winter seasons, the park may post alerts or even fully shut down due to snow and ice, but the visitor’s center and the website will let you know in advance, so when planning your visit, be sure to check for information through these outlets. There are plenty of options for drive-in campgrounds if you’re traveling by RV, and there are also several choices for nearby motels and lodging. The shoreline spans just over 40 miles of sand, cliffs, and natural wonders, and the

beaches stretch out to over 12 miles of soft sand and calm waters to enjoy. Pets are permitted in designated areas, and you may even be able to hike the forest with them, as long as you have them on a leash. Be sure to venture to one or all of the waterfalls, such as the Tahquamenon Falls or the Laughing Whitefish Falls. These beautiful structures are the result of the water running over the limey sandstone, and each formation will be more unique than the last. End your trip with a picture-perfect view of the lighthouses and maritime sites, like the Au Sable Point or the Sand Point. The rich blue water from the lake provides a jawdropping background for the tall, white lighthouses that peak out from the cliffs.

B A D L A N D S N AT I O N A L PA R K There is perhaps nothing more breathtaking than the 240,000+ acres of nothing but vast, open skies, layered rock formations, buttes, and spires that are offered in the Badlands National Park. The amount of harsh weather and erosion that has haunted the land, hence the Lakota name “Badland,” has actually made it beautiful. The deep gorges and tall rock formations are now layered with different colors from the erosion, and seem to be dipped in lavender, gray, yellow, orange, and a white color known as “volcanic ash.” Many fossils and skeletons have been found throughout the park, along with Native American tools and history, which makes the Badlands an educational site as well as a natural wonder. Hike to the tops of the mountains for a 360-degree view of the park, or stay in for a night sky viewing, complete

with millions of twinkling stars and swirling sunset colors. Take a bike ride through one of the many trails around, or gas up the car and take a scenic drive along the two-lane road of the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway. While you’re out and about, you may see some of the impressive native wildlife, like bison, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, and blackfooted ferrets!

No matter where your journey takes you, you will be able to experience the beauty of the Midwest. Stay in a log cabin for the weekend, or take a drive to several of the parks within the region and make a road trip out of it. Whatever your budget and time limit is, whatever activities you’re looking to try out, you’ll find your heart’s desire in the Heartland.

Sept 281, -Oct 201 7 La Crosse’s 57th

Oktoberfest Celebration

Five things to know before you go: 1) The Golden Keg The Tapping of the Golden Keg is held on Friday morning and is a festival highlight for many. Craft Beer Night is held the evening before the Tapping, so if you can handle both of these events, along with the Maple Leaf Parade on Saturday, you are a true Oktoberfest professional and (perhaps) deserve your own button. 2) Maple Leaf Parade 100,000 people come to watch this 3 mile parade throughout La Crosse. Marching bands and floats ensure there is plenty of music, clapping, and laughing. Coolers come filled with a multitude of beverages, and the jovial mood is shared by all. Where else can you Polka with strangers? 3) Torchlight Parade This is a must for families, and now marks the first night of the fest. If you have never attended an evening parade, you

18 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

must experience it. Watch marching bands and floats go by all decked out in glow sticks. Everything is lit up, including houses along the route. 4) Celebrity Spotting The word is out nationally on how great this festival is, so you are bound to see celebrities. Do you ever watch the History Channel series, American Pickers, featuring Frank Fritz? He loves Oktoberfest, too. 5) Men in Lederhosen You cannot deny there are a lot of people dressed in German clothing who walk around kissing strangers and handing out buttons. The website warns: “Other patrons may dress in authentic garb as well so if you approach someone in German-style wear, please ask first if they are part of the Oktoberfest organization.” In other words, just don’t assume you can kiss anyone in German gear. HOT

SPOTS FUN IN THE MIDWESTERN SUN These destinations are among the hottest when it comes to summer fun, and not just in temperature! Stay cool in an indoor waterpark, or sweat it out and soak up the sun on a city beach. Take a sunset kayak tour on Lake Superior, or enjoy a night of fun and games at a casino. Whatever you’ve been dreaming of, you’ll find it here.

LAKE SUPERIOR

The beautiful city (and county) of Racine, Wisconsin, has a lot to offer. Whether you’re looking to bike through the town, explore the architecture of the famous native Frank Lloyd Wright, or peruse through the many boutiques and shops in the downtown area, Racine is a top contender for Midwestern summer destinations. On Lake Michigan, you may hear everyone in the area buzzing about Racine’s North Beach. North Beach is a “city beach,” urban in style, but just as relaxing as the real thing, with pure white sand and calming waves. There is plenty of access to nearby shops and restaurants, so you and the whole family can easily make a weekend out of North Beach alone. The beach is a “Certified Blue Wave” clean beach by the National Clean Beaches Council, and has been noted as award-worthy by several publications and organizations. Lifeguards are always on duty in the summer at North Beach, so safety is not an issue for families traveling with small children. The Beachside Oasis is in full swing during the summer months at North Beach as well, and you will be able to sip cocktails and enjoy live music while you’re soaking up the summer sun. North Beach does get quite busy in the summer, but the parking is free, so plan your day and head to the best city beach in the Midwest! Not up for sand in your pants? That's perfectly fine. There are plenty of other things to do in Racine, like going to the Racine Zoo! The Racine Zoo houses more than 100 different species of animals, including lions! Purchase tickets now for the summer Animal Crackers Concert Series, which is hosting four spectacular days of live music and all things jazz, wine, and food. Tickets are about $60, and include access to a variety of dining options, as well as the zoo itself. Doors for the summer concert series will open at 5:30pm, with the shows beginning at 7pm. The four concert days are July 12th, July 26th, August 9th, and August 23rd. If you are up for a 3-hour drive inland from Racine, head to Wisconsin Dells, “Water Park Capital of the World!” Home to the most water parks per capita than anywhere else on the planet, Wisconsin Dells has a ton of activities that the entire family will enjoy all summer long. Wisconsin Dells resorts were the first to ever put a roof over a waterpark, essentially creating an indoor park that could be visited year-round. The indoor waterparks are easy to fall in love with, and many are attached to resorts for convenience. Some of the parks double as indoor and outdoor waterparks, so a summer vacation here is a no-brainer, but a unique winter escape to an indoor park isn’t a bad idea, which leaves no room for excuses when deciding whether or not you should visit the area.

Travel Midwest | Summer 2017 | 29

MT. OLYMPUS WATER & THEME PARK

LAKE SUPERIOR

The Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park is one of the local favorites, and has so much to offer visitors, from year-round ticket discounts to some of the most slippery, slithering indoor waterslides around: the Boa and Anaconda Tubes. If water slides aren't your thing, Mt. Olympus also has the Jaguar Hot Tub for relaxing, and an entire theme park attached, complete with Go-Kart tracks, roller coasters, and an animal farm! For approximately $200-$500 per night, you can stay at the resort during your entire vacation and enjoy all there is to see at both parks, plus free admission during your stay! You’re more than welcome to try out all of the other waterparks and theme parks in Wisconsin Dells, including Noah’s Ark Waterpark, the largest outdoor waterpark in the country! Noah’s Ark Waterpark sits on 70 acres of pure summer bliss, and offers some of the most daring and thrilling waterslides around, such as the Black Thunder, Point of No Return, and the Time Warp, a 4 person raft that plunges down at super speeds, into an abyss that blurs both time and space; say goodbye to reality as you know it! Just because Wisconsin Dells is the waterpark capital, doesn’t mean that there aren't plenty of other things to do here. A summer with the kids is bound to include at least one waterpark, but if you’re taking a weekend for yourself, stay on a waterfront property or at a quaint B&B, and enjoy the dining and local nightlife around. Put your dancing shoes on and head to Mama’s Garage, which is dubbed the “hottest outdoor entertainment spot in town.” Feeling lucky? Try your hand at the Ho-Chunk Gaming establishment, where you’ll be able to enjoy a variety of table games and slots, and then eat your fill of gourmet steak at the Copper Oak Steakhouse inside. If steak doesn’t suit your fancy, Copper Oak is serving up plenty of other specialty entrées, including the Frenched Rack of Lamb, or Roasted Duck with a Grand Mariner reduction. If outdoor adventure and rugged charm is your weakness, head to Duluth, Minnesota, where you’ll find a variety of sailing and fishing charters, breathtaking natural scenery, amazing historical architecture paired with the beauty of Lake Superior, and much more. Duluth may seem like it is only for adventurists, but the arts and crafts scene, as well as the dining and nightlife options make this a wellrounded vacation spot for all. Take a Duluth Experience Tour, where you can choose to learn about the history of Duluth, take a sunset kayak adventure, or join in on a mountain biking or brewery tour. Multi-day packages are available, and there is even a Dark History tour, which will let you in on the town’s secrets, hauntings, and all the stories folks in town don’t like to mention! For a day of freshwater education, head to the Great Lakes Aquarium, also in Duluth, which is the only all-freshwater aquarium in the United States. Adults are $18 and children get in for about $11-$14, depending on their age. There are interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and tours available all year long.

McCook the Capital of the Buffalo Commons McCook, located in the Republican River valley of southwest Nebraska, is the Capital of the Buffalo Commons. It’s a place where families have lived and thrived for generations, as evidenced by the successful transition of eateries, farms, ranches and other businesses. It’s a place where families share a “secret” fishing hole, the opening of Mule Deer season is a holiday and improving scores at Heritage Hills Golf Course is a badge of honor. It is also a place where in 1905, a family took a chance on an innovative architect and built the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed home in Nebraska. 32 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

McCook is a small town with a creative soul. Sculptures have places of prominence in the community and area artists display their works in galleries. Live music is certainly alive with concerts in the Norris Park Band Shell, listening room events and weekly summer performances at the marina at Hugh Butler Lake. Through summer festivals, such as the Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival, Red Willow County Fair and Heritage Days, McCook shares the history and rural lifestyle of our region. The “foodie” in you will not be disappointed when you visit McCook. The “Go To” places

for the locals include a from-scratch bakery that also serves lunch, an Italian restaurant and deli that will make you question where you are (it’s that good!) and a brew pub with brick oven pizza located in a renovated railroad ice house. Enjoy the perks of being in cattle country with steak houses that feature Nebraska beef, aged to perfection, or a drivein that still has carhops, grinds their own hamburger and cuts their own fries. Hungry yet? Get off the interstate and discover all of the great things that make McCook the Capital of the Buffalo Commons. EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH

the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration!

Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is similar to many medium-sized Midwestern cities, except in late July when the world’s busiest airport isn’t in Chicago, Atlanta or London. It’s in Oshkosh, when the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) holds its annual EAA AirVenture fly-in convention. The event attracts more than 500,000 people and 10,000 airplanes to east central Wisconsin. And those are airplanes of all types, from the smallest ultralight to jumbo jetliners and military transports. Visitors from more than 70 nations gather at Wittman Regional Airport to see almost everything that flies. The weeklong event, this year from July 34 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

24-30, offers an unmatched adventure land of flight. Imagine spending one day doing everything from exploring a massive Air Force C-5 transport plane, to a hands-on drone demonstration, to hearing from an astronaut who walked on the moon, to seeing an amazing night air show. That’s just one day at EAA AirVenture, with six more just like it! It’s also a great family event, with clean grounds and special areas just made for kids, where they can discover the world of flight through simulators, drones, hands-on projects and cool events. It’s a perfect place for those who love flight, history, innovation, technology, or just

people watching. Among the 2017 highlights are the U.S. Navy Blue Angels jet team, an Apollo astronaut reunion, salutes to World War II anniversaries, and much more. It’s well worth a day trip to Oshkosh or, even better, camping among thousands of fellow flight enthusiasts from all over the world. All the highlights, schedules, and things you need to know are available at EAA.org/AirVenture, where you can purchase advance tickets and camping credentials. It’s said that if it has flown, is flying, or will fly, it will come to Oshkosh!

Fun ERICA SIX FLAGS GREAT AM SIX FLAGS ST. LOUIS

Six Flags is a very well-known regional amusement park chain, with two locations in the Midwest. The Great America park is in Chicago, Illinois. The St. Louis location is in Eureka, Missouri. Both of these amusement parks are a great choice for a day of family fun in the summertime. Pick the closer of the two (to you) and head out for an amazing day of thrill rides and other attractions. Six Flags has many different events going on during the summer, such as National Funnel Cake Day, holiday celebrations, Coasters After Dark, and longer summer operating hours. At the Chicago location, thrill rides include the American Eagle, the Demon, and Goliath. The Demon is one of the first roller coasters in the world to feature a double corkscrew turn, and Goliath is the monster of all wooden roller coasters, being the tallest, steepest, and fastest! Family rides for younger children are available at the park as well, including the Columbia Carousel and the Buccaneer Battle, a ride in a boat featuring interactive water guns.

tHr

Six Flags St. Louis features different roller coasters that will deliver an equally thrilling adrenaline rush, including the Screamin’ Eagle, Boomerang, and American Thunder, another classic wooden coaster with drops getting up to 50 miles per hour! The water park is also a favorite here, with the lazy river at Gully Washer Creek, or for the water-loving daredevil, the Bonzai Pipeline, a 60-story waterslide that drops you out of a tube with a trap door at nearly 40 miles per hour! You can purchase one-day tickets to Six Flags for as low as $45, or buy a season pass if you plan on attending more than once this summer. Six Flags also features exclusive dining and shopping options, as well as season-long live entertainment, which is great for the entire family.

ND PAUL BUNYAN LA Located in Brainerd, Minnesota, Paul Bunyan Land is an iconic park of the Midwest. Nearly 60 years old and 6 acres in area, this smaller, but satisfying park is filled with the rich history of America’s industrial growth. Paul Bunyan Land is also coupled with This Old Farm Pioneer Village, which houses one of the largest collections of antiques from the 1800s and 1900s. Visit the many original buildings and displays in the park, such as the giant pumpkin or the Thick n’ Thin Lumber Company. The enjoyment of the rides within the park are unlimited, and all included within the general admission pricing. The children will enjoy themselves all day long on rides such as the Frog Hopper, Ghost Mine, Ferris Wheel, and the Tilt-a-Whirl. General admission is about $20, and children two and under are free!

SILVER DOLLAR

CITY

Silver Dollar City Amusement Park is located in Branson, Missouri, and is home to some of the most amazing attractions in the Midwest that a park can offer. The park was evolved around the Marvel Cave, a natural wonder of the area. For over 50 years, the Marvel Cave entrance operated strictly for the cave features and tours/sightseeing alone. Today, the park features 8 different world-class festivals, American craftsmen demonstrations, and plenty of rides and other attractions, with the Marvel Cave now only being one of those. When attending with children, choose one of the 10 family adventures inside Firemen’s Landing, or try your luck on the “world’s most daring wood coaster,” the Outlaw Run. New for 2017, experience the Year of Food and Crafts, which is a year-long celebration featuring over 200 new food items that have been added to the menus, along with a variety of different crafts to view and try, such as hand soap making and glassblowing/molding. Join in the Silver Dollar City Food Days from May 30th – June 9th, and July 31st – August 20th. During these times, the chefs at Silver Dollar City will be putting innovative spins on all your favorite carnival and amusement park classics, like funnel cakes and kettle corn!

CEDAR POINT The amazing Cedar Point amusement park is located in Sandusky, Ohio, and has been an American favorite for many years. Cedar Point is over 300 acres in size, and is the second-oldest operational amusement park in the United States. The new Cedar Point Shores Water Park is a blast of summer fun in the sun, offering up exceptional dining options and an array of tasty treats, as well as plenty of water slides and attractions. Ride the Fishermen’s Fury, or float through the Runaway Rapids, which is not your average lazy river. With twists, turns, and waterfalls at every corner, you’ll want to keep an eye out while lounging on your tube! With over 30 different roller coasters and thrill rides, you’ll never be bored while at Cedar Point. Opt for a season pass if you’re going to be in the amusement park mood all summer long, otherwise a day pass will cost you just about $50.

No matter what you’re looking for in an amusement park, whether it’s history and adventure, or adrenaline rushes and fast passes, these parks are must-visits this season. Be sure to check each park’s individual website for upcoming events, deals on tickets, hotels in the area, and more!

Heritage & Culture Midwestern History

The

HISTORY OF OUR NATION

IS SO IMPORTANT TO BOTH REMEMBER AND CELEBRATE, AND A GOOD WAY TO DO THIS IS BY HONORING THE LOCAL CULTURE IN YOUR AREA, AS WELL AS PARTICIPATING IN THE PRESERVATION OF THE MONUMENTS WITHIN YOUR REGION.

The Midwest has some of the most beautiful lands in the country, as well as some of the most iconic representations of America as a whole. Places like the Homestead National Monument of America, The Henry Ford, the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, and other various heritage-centered events, await. Get out and explore some of the many representations that make the Midwest the true Heartland!

///////////////////////////////////// HOMESTEAD NATIONAL MONUMENT OF AMERICA The Homestead National Monument of America is another unit of the National Park System, and one that pays homage to the Homestead Act of 1862. This year was when the first of the Homestead Acts was passed, which opened up millions of acres for U.S. citizens, plus the women and immigrants who had applied for citizenship. The Act itself allowed qualified applicants to obtain up to 160 acres of federal land in exchange for the upkeep and cultivation of that property. The overall promise was “Free Land. Located in Gage County, Nebraska, the monument stands on protected land, and includes visitor sites such as the Heritage Center, the Palmer-Epard Cabin, and the Freeman School. Look across the grass prairies and learn about the history and the impact that the Homestead Acts had on American freedom and cultivation while you explore the actual land that was used to do so. The monument is open until 6pm daily during the summertime.

Hoover was very proud of his birthplace, and you can learn all about his life and legacy by visiting the Presidential library and Museum.

“My country owes me no debt. It gave me, as it gives every boy and girl, a chance. It gave me schooling, independence of action, opportunity for service and honor. In no other land could a boy from a country village, without inheritance or influential friends, look forward with unbounded hope.” - Herbert Hoover

Three words starting with “B” give you a quick snapshot of Owensboro, Kentucky – barbecue, bourbon and bluegrass. Barbecue is a magnet all year long for lovers of smoky pork, chicken and a distinctive regional favorite, mutton, called mature lamb by some. Visitors flock to two big restaurants, Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn and Old Hickory Restaurant, as well as to numerous smaller barbecue joints. Let the smoke be your guide. Barbecue aromas permeate the entire downtown early every May for the International Bar-B-Q Festival. Seriously competitive teams chase the Governor’s Cup, and scores of amateur pit masters show off their 52 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

skills. The festival kicks off a series of barbecue picnics at the area’s Catholic parishes that lasts past Labor Day. One parish has had a barbecue picnic for more than 100 years, and they all are the epitome of eating local.

Museum. Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, grew up in tiny Rosine in adjacent Ohio County, and bluegrass pilgrims often build their itineraries around the Bill Monroe Homeplace, the museum and a bluegrass festival.

Owensboro’s second “B,” bourbon, celebrates a connection to Kentucky’s famous libation. O.Z. Tyler Kentucky Bourbon Distillery is producing spirits and offering tours and tastings in a structure built as a distillery in 1885. Nearby is The Miller House, where a downstairs space called Spirits offers more than 400 bourbons.

The biggest of those festivals is ROMP, a four-day explosion of music, camping and camaraderie every June. Other opportunities to enjoy live bluegrass music include Fridays After 5 in the summer, Bluegrass on the Banks, and jam sessions at various locations around town.

Bluegrass, the final “B,” is the musical form that brings fame to the area and why the city is home to the International Bluegrass Music

“Univer -Cities” EXPLORING THE BEST

MIDWEST COLLEGE TOWNS

When the word “college” is mentioned in conversation, it often brings back memories of awkward group study sessions, vast auditoriums that seem to resemble gladiator arenas, and an endless buffet of bland cafeteria foods. However, upon taking a glance at the surrounding area that a university is established in, we begin to find many hidden treasures, from local pubs and eateries, to annual events and historic neighborhoods. These Midwestern college cities are now offering up so much more than higher education!

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA As a major city that makes up half of the Twin Cities, Minneapolis is a metropolitan paradise, with almost as many theaters and artisan scenes as New York City! Ranked only second to New York City in the theater district, you never have to venture far to experience a great show. Theatre in the Round is less than a mile from the University of Minnesota, and as its name suggests, the stage is set in the center of the theater, with seats surrounding it in all directions. With several shows always in production, you can take your pick and purchase tickets according to your preferences. For a small city tour and history lesson, take a walk along the Stone Arch Bridge and visit the Mill City Museum for a look into Minnesota’s older architecture. Both structures are just over a mile from the campus, and the area is full of lunch and dinner choices after you’ve finished. Try Tony’s Diner, a local and undergrad favorite, where you can gorge on hamburgers, fries, chili, oversized breakfasts, and more. The best part? Each meal is meant to be purchased on a college student’s budget, so you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank. Their late night menu is also available, so if you’re hungry for a late night snack, you can surely count on Tony’s. .

The University of Wisconsin single-handedly dominates the culture of Madison, and even the surrounding smaller cities. The eccentric, “keep-warm-but-stay-cool” vibe of the city is perhaps what is most intriguing. However, the bars and annual events make this college town a top pick across the country. What kid doesn’t want to leave school and get out? A UW kid!

if you are looking to wrap up your Madison endeavors by taking part in the fine-dining world, try a meal at L’Etoile, an award-winning seasonal restaurant run by chef Tory Miller and his sister. chef Tory has been churning out creations that not only leave customers satisfied and in awe, but also spark up in-depth conversations in foodie media. Put on your fancy clothes and sit down for the seven course chef’s tasting menu, available with a wine pairing. L’Etoile certainly doesn’t scream “college kid friendly,” so it may be a nice change in atmosphere for the seasoned traveler and foodie adventurist.

COLUMBUS, OHIO This vibrant city has so much to explore, from the eclectic art scene, to the microbreweries that dot the land (there are more than 30!). Ohio State University is nestled within the university district, which is comprised of a handful of smaller neighborhoods, including: Glen Echo, SoHud, the Peach District, Old North Columbus, and Tuttle Park. Enjoy brightly colored murals along the streets, historic churches and memorials, and small diners that the locals go crazy over. If you are hungry for something unique and delicious, head over to Mad Mex or the Ugly Tuna Saloona, both of which are co-ed critically-acclaimed. Mad Mex is and American-Mexican fusion spot that is serving up classics with a twist, along with original creations, like the Mad Mex crab dip. Grab a fishbowl at the Ugly Tuna Saloona, like The Chumbucket, with Three Olives Cherry, melon liquor, sour mix, and Sprite!

No matter what you are searching for when in a college city, you’ll find it here in the Midwest. The weather is beautiful during summer, and the schools will be calmer with vacation in effect. BLUE-RIBBON CITIES Name the two best things to indulge in during the summertime (or any time, for that matter). If the answer is barbecue and beer, you’re doing well for yourself! There is nothing better than sipping on a cold craft beer while munching on slow-smoked ribs, dripping in an authentic, tangy sauce. Throw in some live music and local vendors, and you’ve got a festival to attend. Check out these highly-anticipated summer season events that are perfect for satisfying any barbecue and beer craving you may have.

CHICAGO, IL Chicago style hot dogs, Chicago deep dish pizza, Chicago popcorn, Chicago… you get the idea. Just about any food has a famous cousin that resides in the windy city, and publicity comes free with the way they’re serving up these classics. Beer is a given, but barbecue? Could we actually wrap our heads around the idea that the south may not be the only region serving up blue-ribbon recipes? We certainly can, and the Windy City Ribfest in Uptown, along with the Chicago Craft Beer Festival is why.

The Windy City Ribfest in Uptown will be in full effect the weekend of June 30th to July 2nd. Enjoy live music from local bands and acclaimed establishments, like the Green Mill and Riviera nightclub. This location alone, at Lawrence and Broadway, is enough to attract massive crowds. Parking is available nearby, for around $10 to park all day. This is the festival of the summer here, where you’ll be sampling savory slabs from places like Aussom Aussie Australian BBQ, the Chicago BBQ Company, Porky Chicks BBQ, and the BBQ King Smokehouse, all top “ribbers” from last year’s event. The Chicago Craft Beer Festival isn’t too far off from the Ribfest, and is being held on the 22nd and 23rd of July. Located in the Lincoln Park district of Chicago, you’ll be able to explore hundreds of different local breweries that will be offering daily samples. Purchase a tasting ticket in advance for around $40, which will get you fifteen 3oz samplers of your choice of beer. If you decide to go with a larger group, you can save money on tasting tickets overall. With the purchase of a tasting ticket, you’ll also receive a souvenir tasting glass, access to the private tasting area, and live music throughout the day!

Head to Sun Prairie for the Bacon, Brew & BBQ Festival, because they are one-upping all others by adding America’s favorite salty strips of goodness to the mix. Happening on June 24th, in Angell Park, the Bacon, Brew & BBQ Festival will be serving up both classics and funky spins. The festival is strictly for ages 21 and up, so this is a summer event worth finding a babysitter for. General admission is around $60 and VIP is $85, but what you get with each ticket is well worth it. VIPs get unlimited – yes, unlimited – beer samples, a souvenir glass, free soft drinks and water, access to live music, FREE barbecue tastings, priority entry, and $30 in Bacon Bucks. DULUTH, MN All Pints North Summer Brew Fest is not only fun to say, but also an amazing way to wrap up the month of July. Happening on Saturday, July 29th at the Bayfront Festival Park, the All Pints North Festival is a 21+ event, with over 120 breweries at your fingertips. The festival will take place in the afternoon, from 3pm-7pm, so eat a big brunch and head on over. If you purchase tickets in advance, they’re $45, but at the door they’ll be $55, so go online and purchase them at www.mncraftbrew.org if you can. Tickets get you unlimited craft beer samples and access to local food vendors, as well as educational booths, live music, and a variety of beer-centered activities. The festival may not have the word barbecue in its name, but vendors will be serving BBQ pulled pork sliders, braised beef, and many more creations for those of you that can’t ever get enough of that smokehouse flavor.

This summer, kick back and relax with a rib in one hand, and a pint in the other, because, let’s face it, that’s what we’d be doing all year long if we could. These festivals are sure to please, and remember that the pricing for most of these tasting tickets includes unlimited samples. Check each website for ticket purchases and vendor, entertainment, and location information. See you there!

Barbeque When a national award–winning barbeque team opens a BBQ joint, you know you're in for the real deal. But, City Barbeque, founded in 1999 in Columbus, Ohio, definitely isn't resting on its laurels. Self-described as "100% dedicated to the craft of barbeque," the company continues to rack up national and local awards for best barbeque while staying true to its original vision of serving others and creating happiness. While 'que aficionados will recognize influences from some of the nation's most renowned BBQ regions on the menu, City Barbeque doesn't stick to any one style, instead opting to combine the best of the best. That goes for its staff, too: from the pit

master to the cashier, everyone in the joint seems to pride themselves on providing the genuine article.

So what's on the menu? Well, we should start with their American Royal Invitational World Champion Brisket, smoked to perfection and genuinely mouthwatering. You should see the size of their smoked half chickens. Competition-quality St. Louis–cut ribs, succulent turkey, and good ol' pulled pork all make an appearance, but

“CITY BARBEQUE JOINTS CAN BE FOUND THROUGHOUT OHIO, KENTUCKY, INDIANA, AND NORTH CAROLINA” why not try the “More Cowbell,” named one of the best sandwiches in America a few years back. The sides menu has all the classics—including collards, corn pudding, and a killer potato salad—and they're all made from scratch. We can't say it any better than City Barbeque: "This is barbeque in its truest form, created by people who are dedicated to doing it right." City Barbeque joints can be found throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina, but with BBQ this good, we wouldn't be surprised to see it spread to the likes of Atlanta and Chicago in the very near future. HEARTLAND IF YOU’RE A FAN OF BREWS, SMALL BATCHES, AND VINO, THEN THESE DESTINATIONS SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF YOUR LIST WHEN SEARCHING FOR A NEW WINERY, DISTILLERY, OR BREWERY EXPERIENCE. Each establishment has its own personality, and really sets the Midwest apart from other regions when it comes to an authentic drink experience, rather than just simply going out for a drink. Try a hand-crafted stout or a glass of local Prairie Blush, and you’ll be leaving with a big Heartland smile on your face.

The Pinckney Bend Distillery has a history as rich as the spirits it offers to its customers. Located in New Haven, Missouri, the distillery actually uses the water from the nearby Missouri River to produce an authentic taste in their gin, vodka, and whiskey.

PINCKNEY BEND DISTILLERY The Pinckney Bend Distillery has a history as rich as the spirits it offers to its customers. Located in New Haven, Missouri, the distillery actually uses the water from the nearby Missouri River to produce an authentic taste in their gin, vodka, and whiskey. The small and upcoming town of Pinckney Bend in the 1800s was known for its whiskey, where Lewis and Clark passed through during their expeditions. Clark noted in a historical journal that he had purchased two gallons of whiskey from a citizen. The Pinckney Bend itself was said to be a “naviga68 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

tional hazard,” in which many boaters rounded the corner only to wreck their steamboats. Because of the well-rounded and deeprooted history of the area, the Pinckney Bend Distillery stayed true to its heritage and named the distillery accordingly. Today, the distillery is producing “premium quality, hand-crafted spirits worthy of their heritage, one small batch at a time.” Try the new Hibiscus Gin, which can also be purchased with the distillery’s very own tonic syrup. Their handcrafted American Vodka made the “10Best” list from USA Today, and their

whiskey has won countless awards and medals, including the gold. Using locally-sourced – and according to them, "the best!" – white oak, the young corn whiskey is rested for a period of time in the burnt barrels, which gives the Rested Whiskey a flavor that is both unique to the area and the distillery itself. Visit the tasting room, open daily from noon to 6pm, where you can sample all of the different spirits they make at the Pinckney Bend Distillery. Call ahead for large group tastings, and be sure to visit www.pinckneybend.com for information on new concoctions and updated events.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// DARK HORSE BREWING COMPANY The Dark Horse Brewing Company, located in Marshall, Michigan, is arguably a very well-known brewery, even though it caters to dry humor and inside jokes. Adored by all locals who know it, Dark Horse produces some of the most fun and tastiest beers around. With wooden mugs and eccentric drawings scattered about the taproom and facility, you’ll recognize the quirky, uniqueness of both the brewery and the man behind it all, Aaron Morse. He is a go-getter and no-nonsense beer guru that playfully (no, seriously!) asks that you do not play AC/DC on his jukebox while en-

joying your beer. The fun signs and authentic, rocker vibe that the place gives off is more than enough to keep like-minded individuals coming back, and will have those that are wary of the style interested enough to step through the doors, at least once. While Dark Horse calls Michigan home, it has long since blossomed from a local gem. Today, Dark Horse beer can be found as far west as the Dakotas and as far south as the Carolinas. Take a $10 tour next time you’re around, which will get you a pint glass, tasting in the VIP Loft, and a complete tour of the production facility. These tours are only

available on Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 6pm, so be sure to plan around one of those days. The Taproom is otherwise open graciously, with Fridays and Saturdays up and running until midnight, so you can check out what Dark Horse is brewing at your own pace. With beers like Scotty Karate and Scary Jesus Rock Star, you can’t go wrong. If you enjoy dark beers, your life will change upon trying their stouts. Go for the Fore Smoked Stout or the Plead the 5th Stout, when available. For those of you that are bourbon & stout lovers, you’ll want to buy as much of the Bourbon Barrel Plead the 5th as you can. Seriously, it’s that good. Travel Midwest | Summer 2017 | 69

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// WOLLERSHEIM WINERY Head to Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin for a glass of vino from an award-winning winery, 45 years in the making. 1972 marked the year that Robert and JoAnn Wollersheim purchased the farm land to restore the winery to its full capacity. Today, the winery now has a little sister, the Cedar Creek Winery, which was also purchased by the family, in 1990. You can take a tour of the winery with up to 20 people at a time, but be sure to call ahead to make a reservation. If you do not call ahead, and are in a smaller group, you can purchase “day of” tickets at the door. While on the tour, you can expect introductory historical videos, a complete walk

outside around the vineyards, and an inside look into the underground limestone aging cellars, where you’ll finish the tour and be invited to come taste the wines in current production. You might want to try the Prairie Blush, a delicious semi-dry blush wine with pink grapefruit and red currant undertones. The Prairie Blush has consistently won awards and has earned Wollersheim the name of being a top rose producer in America. The tasting is complimentary with the tour (current wines only), but additional flights may be purchased for the added experience. If you’re not much of a wine drinker, and simply along for the ride, don’t worry! Wollersheim has something for

everyone, including a distillery on the grounds, as well. Explore the legend of the Wollersheim brandy making, and take a tour of the distinctive distillery, complete with tastings all its own.

There is nothing more satisfying when touring a winery, brewery, or distillery, than leaving and knowing that you’ve sampled a quality product with quality people. These establishments pride themselves on classic, hand-crafted batches that bring as much history to the table as they do alcohol content. Take the time to sip slowly, and sink into the aromas and flavors that fill your senses, and you’ll go home with a good memory and a great souvenir worth sharing!

Weekend escapes

WALLET-FRIENDLY WEEKEND ROAD TRIPS

Weekends are all about fun and relaxation. When Friday hits, we all want to kick off our shoes and exhale the weekday stressors with a deep sigh. The problem is, most of us don’t plan for a good time. We plan to get everything done that we couldn’t fit into our workweek schedule. To those of you that are guilty, stop doing this! Take a weekend and plan for a road trip. Small, yet satisfying, road trips are a great way to escape into a mini-vacation without having the stress of flights, passports, and finances. With the beautiful span of the Midwest as your destination, you’ll never plan a dud, and you’ll likely find many more reasons to take a second and third road trip as you begin exploring. As a region dotted with nature trails, scenic highways, quaint bed & breakfasts, and priceless historical sites, there is a weekend road trip for everyone, and all of them are wallet-friendly. You don’t have to escape across the country, or the world, to enjoy your vacation time. Check out these inexpensive weekend road trips worthy of immediate reservation! A weekend road trip can cover a lot of ground, but it shouldn’t take you more than a 3-4-hour drive at the most to reach your destination, otherwise you’re going to lose valuable time to be spent exploring the area. Opt for one of these beautiful locations, which are all easy to get to and visitor-friendly. In the summer, enjoying the outdoors and the lakeshores, like in Chesterton, Indiana, is a breeze. If you’re looking for a more exciting city atmosphere, head to Minneapolis or Traverse City, where there is something for everyone to enjoy!

CHESTERTON, IN Chesterton is a beautiful town full of a wide variety of activities for everyone to enjoy, from biking along the newest trails in the area, to golfing at one of the local golf courses and then grabbing a bite to eat at one of the town’s most prized restaurants. The Indiana Dunes, however, are Chesterton’s pride and joy. Located within the Indiana Dunes State Park, the relaxing, soft waves that kiss the shorelines are the epitome of a summer well spent. Driving here is simple, and the park fees range from $7$12 for entrance, depending on whether the license plates are in-state or out-of-state. You can relax on the shorelines all day, or hike to a campground to spend the weekend here fishing for smelt and exploring the natural wonders of the area. Pack a lunch for yourself and head out at the next chance you get for an unforgettable and inexpensive weekend getaway.

Mall of America Bloomington, Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, MN Noted as the sister of St. Paul, and both of which make up the Twin Cities, Minneapolis has a vibrant and lively atmosphere to get lost in. Whether you’re looking for a weekend of shopping in the Mall of America, or wanting to tour the city (try it in a kayak!), you’ll find something to love here. Just at the tail end of summer, you can make your way to the Minnesota State Fair, which is the second largest state fair in the entire nation, for a fun-filled weekend. With hundreds of free shows and live entertainment, 500 different fair foods to choose from, fireworks, carnival rides, and more, the entire family will walk away satisfied.

Looking for a bit of history and education? Cruise the north end of the Mississippi River in the famous Minneapolis Queen, a paddlewheeler cruise that offers private charters along the giant river and in Lake Minnetonka as well. These boats are authentic replicas of their predecessors that were once used to travel the mighty Mississippi long ago. Public cruises are $20 per adult, and $11 for children from 2-10 years old. Snacks and a cash bar are also on board the sightseeing cruise. Private charters are a bit more costly, but well worth the money if you’re traveling with a large group.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

TRAVERSE CITY, MI Traverse City, known as the True North, has everything from wine tastings to what they call “the four-season playground,” where you can bike, hike, and enjoy the Michigan shores. Take a personal wine tour or a tasting day along the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail, or visit one of the many tap rooms in the area. The Man vs. Draft tour is a craft beer experience, where you can order original local creations, such as the Concrete Dinosaur, located at the Right Brain Brewery. Cost effectiveness depends on what and how much you order, but the tastings and tours are inexpensive and will easily take up an entire day.

82 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

Take a drive to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which was named the “Most Beautiful Place in America” by ABC’s Good Morning America. A parking pass for the lakeshore is $15, and with that you’ll be able to enter the rich world of Michigan’s natural history. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a mustdo activity. Nearly 8 miles long, this drive will take you through the loops and whirls of the Beech Maple Forest, and you’ll get to view the Glen Lakes and the dunes from several look-out stops along the drive, feasting your eyes on pillows of sand, gentle waves, and native vegetation. Stop at the store and grab some essentials. When you reach the end of the drive you can set up a personal picnic and enjoy, while you take in the all the natural beauty. Now that’s what we call a weekend roadtrip!

Hotel or B&B?

The Hotel Saugatuck B&B BLENdS THE BEST of BoTH

Saugatuck, always the beating heart of Michigan’s Art Coast, thrums with buoyant rhythm after the late 2016 opening of The Hotel Saugatuck Luxury Bed and Breakfast. If ever there was a reason to return to Saugatuck, The Hotel Saugatuck is it. In a town known for B&Bs, The Hotel Saugatuck offers a different take on the genre. Guests get the warm, individualized attention of a bed and breakfast whenever they want it — and when they just want to be left alone, they get that, too.

Privacy-minded guests can even opt out of room-delivered dessert each evening and breakfast arriving on a tray at a time they choose, but no one does. Not when dessert might be hand-rolled chocolate truffles and breakfast could be smoked salmon and scrambled eggs rolled in an Irish potato pancake. And not when you can dine in bed, at the room's dining table, or, in one of the cottage suites on your private deck with views of Kalamazoo Lake. No other area lodging offers these amenities in every single room: custom king bed with luxury linens, all-season fireplace, individual temperature controls, and, oh my, the Jason Hydrotherapy Tub with Microsilk technology. Unfamiliar? The family whose patriarch invented the Jacuzzi developed this whole new way to move water, rejuvenating body and skin. Each suite also features a large custom tile and glass shower with rain head and body sprays. Wrap yourselves in Turkish towels. Rustle up coffee or a complimentary snack; you’ve got a Keurig, microwave, mini-fridge, and wet bar. Watch your smart high-def flat screen with Netflix and Pandora, or stream something using our high-speed internet. If you ever decide to leave your room, the charms of Saugatuck and Lake Michigan beckon you to explore. Travel Midwest | Summer 2017 | 91

Huron House B&B

LURES LOVERS YEAR-ROUND

How did a small community on Lake Huron known for walleye fishing and for the world-famous trout river that runs through town also become known as one of Michigan’s leading destinations for people in love? Because the Huron House Bed and Breakfast in Oscoda, in Northeast Lower Michigan checks all the boxes as a romantic getaway. Lovers return frequently to the award-winning B&B, even when it’s too nippy to stroll on the sand beach. Their loyalty escalated during the past couple years, after a complete refresh under new owners. Fourteen spacious rooms each offer a king bed, fireplace, and jetted tub or private outdoor hot tub — or both. The rooms appeal to all the senses: fresh, clean smell; contemporary beach colors; views of Lake Huron; deluxe linens and towels, and the convenience of individual temperature controls. The rooms’ full array of tech and entertainment amenities keep guests as tuned to the outside world as they want to be. Couples can snuggle in and sustain life with in-room snacks and use of their kitchenette and available charcoal grill in the common area. Each night, a chef-prepared temptation is room-delivered — perhaps cream-filled profiteroles with a chocolate glaze or pumpkin cake garnished with spiced whipped cream, chocolate mousse, candied walnuts and spun sugar. Many of Huron House’s five-star reviews mention privacy as a key attribute of Huron House, including at breakfast, when, at a prearranged time, trays arrive bearing, for example, blueberry compote crepes with candied thick-cut bacon and an artful fruit parfait. Guests who manage to tear themselves away from Huron House enjoy the area’s casual, outdoorsy vibe, including canoeing and fly fishing on the Au Sable River, birding, hiking, fat biking, or cross-country skiing on the 26-mile Corsair Trail system.

AwArd-winning Bed And BreAkfAst

Located on the beach of Lake Huron between Tawas and Oscoda, the Huron House is an award-winning 14 room luxury Bed and Breakfast lakefront destination. Awake to the breathtaking sight of the sunrise of Lake Huron.

Exploring the Great Lakes

THE ULTIMATE CIRCLE TOUR

Summer is arguably the best time to explore the great lakes, especially if you plan on making an extended road trip out of your time here. From east to west, you will be able to explore Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior, to see what each shoreline has to oer, from big lakeside cities, to small scenic drives. You won’t want to miss out on this summertime-friendly ultimate circle tour around all of the Great Lakes!

o i r a t n O Lake

Lake Ontario is seated on the border between New York and Canada. While it isn’t technically in the Midwest, it is still part of the Great Lakes cluster, and near and dear to our hearts, if for no other reason than the fact that it is linked to Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is a must-see, no matter what age you are or where you’re from. The majesty of the falls, such as Bridal Veil and Horseshoe Falls, is not to be missed. With a 165-foot drop, Horseshoe Falls provide a devilish drop into the Niagara River. The Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States, so head to Niagara County, New York, to begin your journey. The park itself is over 400 acres in area,

96 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

and just over a quarter of that area is under water. More than 3,000 tons of water flow over the falls every single second. The park is open 24 hours a day, all year long. To get up close and personal with the falls, it is recommended that you take a tour via the Maid of the Mist. The original Maid of the Mist boat was built and used as traditional transport to and from New York and Canada, both for people and for goods and services. Today, the boat tours are strictly for tourism purposes, but the history behind the tour, and the fact that you’ll get soaked – ponchos are provided – while on the water, are the two main reasons for going.

Lake Erie

since we’ve bridged the gap between two of the Great lakes by way of the niagara river, it’s only natural that our next stop would be lake erie. lake erie has a scenic tour that surrounds the entire lake, so if you’re just wanting to drive for the great views, head that way. otherwise, check out cleveland. situated right on the lakeshore, and known as a lakeside city, cleveland has so much to offer. Visit the cleveland aquarium, to stay with the water theme, or head to the rock and roll hall of Fame for a musical escape.

While you’re on the shoreline, stay on track by visiting lakeside, ohio, where you’ll be in the lakeside community of chautauqua. this historic community offers up tons of fun things to do to create the perfect summer experience, so a Great lakes tour would not be complete without them. Purchase a summer chautauqua Pass to explore all of the events going on during their peak season. From lectures and worship services, to relaxing days on the shore with live music and automobile shows, a day spent in the lakeside community is a memorable one. enjoy wooden boat rides and sunset cruises on the lake, and be sure to catch a summer concert in the park or a garden tour.

LAKE ERIE >> has a scenic tour that surrounds the entire lake

n a g i h c i M Lake

Lake Michigan is the only lake of the Great Lakes that is located completely inside of the United States. There are tons of attractions on the shores of Lake Michigan, from Traverse City to Green Bay. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is perfect for enjoying the outdoors, and Traverse City and the nearby Charlevoix have so much to offer, with Fisherman’s Island State Park, which is ideal for camping and picnics.

Traverse City will blow your foodie mind, with all of its wine and culinary options. It’s best to stop here for a bite to eat while on your circle tour. Clinch Park may just be the favorite beach stretch, as it is right next door to downtown Traverse City, and has a marina, for easy docking options. With a variety of microbreweries, winery tours, and distilleries, you’ll never go

98 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

thirsty while you’re here, either!

Downtown historic Charlevoix is a quaint, cottage-style town that encompasses what it means to be in a peaceful lakeside area. Stay for a Lake Michigan sunset, and explore the water via a kayak or a boat tour. The summers here are beautiful and refreshing! Head over to Green Bay, which is one of the most recognized bays in the country, but not just for their football team. Visit the Green Bay Botanical Gardens, or spend a day hiking through waterfalls and eroded rocks along the shores. During the summer, Green Bay has a variety of events and activities to participate in, including Bayfest, Artstreet, Summer in the Park, and a beautiful Independence Day celebration.

Lake Huron

Lake Huron is known for shipwrecks and mystery, and is the 2nd largest of the Great Lakes. More than 1,000 shipwrecks have been recorded in the lake, which reaches over 20,000 square miles of surface area. 30 lighthouses stand on Lake Hurons shorelines, so a scenic drive and a day on the water are both great ways to enjoy the scenery. If you have a heart for the outdoors, ride your bike along the shores of Lake Huron and the established trails to really get a feel for the surrounding nature.

Visit the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where you can take a shipwreck tour with spectacular views from a glass-bottom boat. The Alpena Shipwreck Tour will take you along the clear water while you learn about the history and significance of each wreck, including: the Bay City Shipwreck, Haltiner Barge Shipwreck, Harvey Bissell Shipwreck, Steamer Monohansett Shipwreck, Shamrock Shipwreck, and the William P. Rend Shipwreck.

VISIT THE GREEN BAY BOTANICAL GARDENS

SPLIT ROCK LIGHTHOUSE Minnesota

Lake Superior

LAKE SUPERIOR’S 1,200 MILE CIRCLE TOUR IS ARGUABLY THE BEST SCENIC DRIVE OUT OF ALL OF THE GREAT LAKES CIRCLE TOURS

100 | Summer 2017 | Travel Midwest

Lake superior’s 1,200 mile circle tour is arguably the best scenic drive out of all of the Great Lakes circle tours, but the attractions are just as competitive, with the Great Lakes aquarium, fishing charters and boating options, lodging and many more amenities and events available, especially during the summer hours.

Visit the split Rock Lighthouse for spectacular views and history on what it’s like to be a light keeper, or head to the Lake superior Provincial Park in ontario for amazing rock formations and steep cliffs. the circle tour itself winds through Canada as well, so make sure you’re willing to cross borders before planning your trip. take a tour of the harbor via Vista Fleet tours, located in Duluth, Minnesota. Vista Fleet offers up several tours that vary in length, so they can accommodate anyone, from small children who want pizza, to adults who would prefer to splurge on a dinner cruise. the ships offer great views and the tours can last anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours, depending on your preference. the tours are complete with the history of the area and are very informative while you’re taking pictures and enjoying refreshments.

Weave your way in and around the Great Lakes and experience some of the most popular attractions, and keep an eye out for those less-popular hidden gems. Whether you’re looking for something to keep the kids entertained, or if you would just like to relax from shoreline to shoreline, you’ll find that there is something for everyone on the banks of every Great Lake!

/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Canton, OH If there’s one thing you need to know about Canton, it’s that it is home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It doesn’t get any better than walking through the halls and getting to learn about and honor the “heroes of the game.” According to Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton was chosen as the site for the hall because “The American Professional Football Association, later renamed the National Football League, was founded in Canton on Sept. 17th, 1920.” For this reason, along with the fact that early 1960s Canton citizens petitioned and organized that the hall be placed in their city, ultimately led to the construction of the site. Summer hours are extended until 8pm and the price of admission is $25 per adult (ages 13-64). General admission will get you the basics, but if you call yourself the ultimate football fan, you’ll want to take the VIP Insider’s Tour. The price is steep at $2,000, but the cost covers up to 20 people, so get a large group and pay $100 each, and you’ll be good to go. On the tour, you will get to explore never-before-seen artifacts and images, and the stories “will make the hall come alive,” according to recent visitors. You will actually be touring the Ralph Wilson, Jr. Pro Football Research & Preservation Center, which is the “state-of-the-art” facility that houses all of the additional artifacts. The tour is available 7 days a week upon reservation, and will last for about an hour.

the pro football hall of fame was founded in 1963.

Dyersville, IA In the spring of 1989, one of the more historically iconic baseball films was released: Field of Dreams. Today, the Field of Dreams Movie Site can be visited, where you will be able to walk the field and take a tour of the farm where all of Kinsella’s dreams came true. On the farm, you’ll notice the house is still in place, along with the barn and the noticeable corn field, but the main attraction is the diamond in the center of it all.

Unforgettable Nature Vacations Schedule a Home Tour, where you will be able experience the site with a guide on a 30-minute historical and storyfilled tour, complete with the Lansing family heritage, which was the family that originally owned the farm. The seasonal hours are 9am-6pm until October, and then closing time moves to 4pm. During the months of July and August, however, there will be extended hours for summer, so go during this time if you can. Admission is free! You’ll only need money for concessions and souvenirs. While at the movie site, be sure to attend a Ghost Sunday Show, a comedy routine that lasts for just about 90 minutes, of course on Sundays (hence the name), at 1pm. If you will be around in September, you won’t want to miss the Team of Dreams baseball game on the 3rd and 4th. The MLB’s most celebrated players will come together to play a celebrity game of baseball in the famous field, and you can be a spectator. There will also be an autograph session where you can obtain signatures from some of your favorite players. General admission for the Team of Dreams event is $20.

the best of {INDIANA} head to Evansville for their 5 different cultural districts, all with something to offer every visitor. the Downtown, haynie’s Corner Arts, North Main street, University, and West franklin street districts are overflowing with events and things to do, from checking out the college scene, to enjoying local art and history. the Downtown district has plenty of hotels, complete with skywalks, as well as locally-owned restaurants and bars, and classic Victorian architecture to view. haynie’s Corner is “where the artists play,” and they mean this quite literally, as the outdoors have become more like extended common areas for locals to gather and share their work. enjoy the sound of jazz music on weekend afternoons, and stop in a local pub for a beer while you view art from the streets. North Main street is the hip area, where the “cool kids” hang out, so if you’re trendy, head here. there are always new bars and restaurants popping up, as well as a few local long-time favorites.

stop in at turoni’s Pizza & brewery for a slice and beer, and watch for bikes! With green living becoming more popular, you'll notice bikeways and pedestrian lanes everywhere. the University district is actually quite the opposite from what one would normally expect in a college setting. there is tons of greenery, with the nearby Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, and the architecture on campus is spectacular. the Wesselman Woods is one of the “largest urban old-growth forests in the country.” here, you can take a long nature walk in an untouched woodland area without being disturbed, and then head to one of the other districts for a bite to eat. If you’re looking for something to do as far as events go, West franklin is the place to be. this is where Mardi Gras, Independence Day celebration, Nut Club fall festival, and Dickens Christmas are all held. If you're into hot street food and live music, this district is for you.

Indianapolis is the largest city in Indiana, which is why it isn’t hard to find something you’ll like to do there. Nature walks and outdoor events are popular here in the summer, so try the Canal Walk, which has been refurbished from its original build, and is now blooming with cyclists and pedestrians. It is perfect for sightseeing and enjoying the fresh Indiana air. If you’d rather be swinging through the air than simply breathing it, try out the Go Ape Treetop Adventure. Admission is between $30$60 and is recommended for ages ten and up. During the adventure you can swing from and fly through the canopies for a day, feeling as free as a bird.

of Monroe, itself, with foundation in 1820, only two years after Bloomington. The large limestone buildings of the campus provide art and structure simultaneously, and the history of Indiana University and Bloomington seems to come alive within the architecture. Indiana University is known for its basketball, so there are plenty of local hang-outs that cater to school spirit. Make your way to Nick’s English Hut, an icon in and of itself, that has been in business for over 80 years. There are a ton of TVs all around the restaurant and bar, so watching the game is both easy and enjoyable. Choose from a wide variety of bar food, including burgers and sandwiches, like the Italian Beef or Nick’s Panini of the Day. All of the meats are locally sourced, and the food is always fresh. Grab a beer and kick back here for a few hours to get a feel for authentic Bloomington living.

Indiana Bloomington is a town centered around its school, Indiana University. The university has been around nearly as long as the town and the county

ThE BEST of {WISCONSIN} Milwaukee is all about the craft beer and food scene, so if you’re looking for a good brew, come visit “the city that beer built.” Take a beer tour to taste everything from a local stout to a fruit-infused beer. Visit the Bavarian Bierhaus, where you can experience authentic German hospitality and take one of the weekly brewery tours. The Bavarian Bierhaus is fairly new, but offers up great food and beer in their taproom, and traditional German heritage that brings cultural flare to the modern brewery scene. The next stop is the City Lights Brewing Company, which stands in the historic buildings of the original Milwaukee Gas Light Company. The structures are over 100 years old, but still stand strong as they house City Light’s state-of-the-art brewing equipment. Take a tour of the City Lights and learn about the “art and science of beer.” When you take the tour, you’ll get a behindthe-scenes look at what goes into a day of brewing, and you can even shop for your very own brewer’s shirt. Sample the Brown Ale in a signature Belgian beer glass, and be sure to purchase some to take home before you leave. The City Lights Brewing Company packages all of their beer in cans, and they believe that the cans enhance the quality of the beer to make it as fresh as possible, so that it tastes like it’s from the tap every time. During the tour, they’ll explain the science behind their packaging, and when you leave, you will never look at bottled beer the same again.

Sturgeon Bay is another great town, especially in the summer season. Located in Door County, and sitting right on the mitten’s thumb of Lake Michigan, Sturgeon Bay is all about sailing and boating. Cruise the bay all the way to the Sherwood Point Lighthouse or take a boating tour to the U.S. Coast Guard Station, and then out into the open Lake Michigan. Events are going on all year long in Sturgeon Bay, like the Amish Quilt Show in July and Sturgeon Bay Maritime Week in the beginning of August. There will be live music and familyfriendly activities happening during Maritime Week, all in honor of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Bayfield is another lakeside town on the Northern end of Wisconsin, known for its cozy, charming atmosphere and its ability to make visitors feel like they’ve escaped the hustle and bustle of city life. Bayfield sits at the edge of Lake Superior, and is nestled in the tranquility of the Apostle Islands. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is perfect for a summer getaway, with about 12 miles of shoreline open for enjoyment. There are hiking trails, scenic nature walks, protected wildlife, and daring cliffs to take in as you sightsee. Go camping on the islands, or stay at a quaint bed and breakfast for the weekend. You can also go berry picking, or visit during the fourth of July festival, a giant celebration with fireworks at dusk, a full weekend pow-wow, and live concerts on the lake.

Arthur, IllInoIs

ARTHUR…YOUR AUTHENTIC DESTINATION If you are looking for an authentic destination to enjoy yearround, we invite you to come visit us in Arthur, the heart of Illinois Amish Country. It is red, white, and blue sitting under a night sky, watching the huge fireworks extravaganza. It is a warm evening at the county fair with all the cotton candy, tractor pulling, carnival riding, livestock showing, game playing and entertainment goodness to be had! It is the Cheese Festival on labor Day weekend. It’s a time for shopping, parades, “rat” racing, music, food and, of course, ChEEsE! It's a combination of end-of-summer and beginning-of-fall extravaganzas.

As the calendar pages turn, it will be the songbirds singing, the trees stretching out with their green buds, and people resuming work in their yards and in the fields; spring! the area greenhouses open their doors with a rainbow of flowers, plants and seeds to sow for that summer garden. the fields and barnyards are filled with lambs, calves, foals, and kids (both the goat and human variety) testing out their “new” legs, running about in the fresh spring breeze.

Illinois then comes autumn, which around here we refer to as pumpkin! We are famous for our cucurbits, from the orange orbs, to gourds and squash for cooking, eating, and decorating. As winter sets in, we have quiet! of course, that is between the Christmas Kickoff and the Central Illinois outdoor Expo.

Year-round – we invite you to come and enjoy the heart of Illinois Amish Country – for harvest season, for a winter of rest, for the rebirth of spring, and the glory of summer – all of this awaits you, right here in the Arthur area; the Best of Illinois! A visit to Arthur is an authentic experience of history, culture, festivals, and fun, which make for great family memories!

the best of {MISSOURI} When you think of St. Louis, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the Arch. however, st. Louis has got a rockin’ blues and music scene. Get ready to listen to the familiar sounds of Guns & Roses, elvis, the beatles, fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, KIss, and more, all done by local tribute bands. the diverse nature of the city’s music is enough to make any music lover want to stick around for the long haul. there’s even an old legend that tells of the city making a deal with the devil, regarding the musical talent that thrives and spreads from its boundaries. the published work that describes this legend is titled Devil At The Confluence, by the st. Louis artist Kevin belford. In the work, he describes the city as a proud connector to the world of the blues. Complete with original illustrations, the book dives into detail about the start of the blues influence within the city and the major musicians who brought popularity to the region. today, you can visit the National blues Museum, which will help bring history back to life, and you will be able to relive the earliest blues memories, and

view many priceless artifacts of the era. Branson, Missouri has a wide variety of charm and character, from the Dolly Parton attractions to the titanic Museum, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. the ozark town is also popular for its amusement park, silver Dollar City, but there are plenty of hidden gems and local attractions outside of the touristy realm, so it just depends on what you’re looking to do here. branson has a big country music scene, so head to the Dolly Parton Dixie stampede Attraction for a unique experience to introduce you to the music. Put on your boots and kick up your heels to the skeeter & Nugget show, as performers and trick riders show off in the 35,000 square foot arena. over 30 horses will also participate in the show, and dinner is served during the action. Dinner is a four-course feast that includes: rotisserie chicken, hickory smoked bbQ pork loin, creamy veggie soup, homemade biscuits, corn on the cob, potatoes, unlimited soft drinks, and a specialty Dixie dessert.

If you’re going to be around in August, head to the Branson Fiddle Festival. The 29th annual festival is being held this year from the 25th to the 27th of August, and will be taking place on the famous West 76 Country Boulevard at the Grand Country Music Hall and the Grand Country Resort. Of course there will be a fiddling competition and plenty of live shows, but also indoor mini-golf and an outdoor waterpark for guests and visitors that are staying at the Grand Country Inn. Kansas City may be praised for its BBQ, but the city itself has so much more to offer when it comes to events and attractions. Beer is big here, as well. Take the Kansas City Tap Tour, which will act as your own personal guide to all of the local breweries. The guidebooks can be purchased at the visitors center. Collect a stamp at each brewery and learn fun facts as you sample your way

through the list. Tours are always going on throughout the year, but you will have to check www.visitkc.com for information on upcoming prizes and special giveaways while on the tours. Check out the nationally recognized World War I Museum, which houses countless artifacts and knowledge about the “War to End All Wars.” Known as a national treasure, the museum has received numerous awards and constant reviews about the amazing exhibitions it holds. The Power and Light District is the city’s hub, which hosts plenty of bars, restaurants, and nightlife for visitors and locals alike. Catch a movie or peruse through the “high-end supermarket.” Grab a bite to eat at Cleaver & Cork or the Kill Devil Club. The Kill Devil Club is a newer establishment serving up hand-crafted cocktails and small plates.

Although it’s more common in older women, ovarian cancer affects women of all ages, even in their 20s. There is no early detection test, and symptoms can be subtle. But while you can’t see it, you can take steps to get ahead of it by knowing your risk factors. Family history of cancer and presence of gene mutations like BRCA are risk factors, so talk to your family and your doctor. This information makes you less likely to ignore vague signs that could indicate disease. Meanwhile, promising collaborative research will continue to shed light on new advances in diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. To learn more about symptoms, risk factors and research

Time and time again, visitors are delightfully surprised by Columbia. From picturesque parks and clever cuisine to amazing art and superb shopping, visitors find that Columbia is more than your average college town. We like to think of Columbia as a cool neighborhood in a big city, with a young vibe and an active buzz. We’re also a friendly and welcoming place, with a thriving downtown and an abundance of cultural opportunities. Think you know Columbia? Here are a few things about our city you might unexpect. Love ice cream? Love wine? Of course you do. Could we interest you in some wine ice cream? Check out Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream in downtown Columbia for flavors only a genius could think up. The University of Missouri campus is beautiful to explore, but did you know that the entire campus is a botanic garden? Plenty of cities boast film festivals. However, Columbia’s True/False Film Fest is one of the most respected events in the world for the documentary film community, and the event is truly Columbia at its best. The festival not only showcases incredible films but also musical showcases, a game show and the weirdest parade you’ll ever see. These are just a few ways that Columbia is What You Unexpect. We truly believe the experiences you have, the people you meet, and the memories you take with you will all exceed your expectations.

Kansas THE BEST OF {KANSAS}

Lindsborg is known as “Little Sweden USA,” and has a unique charm all its own. Take a Lindsborg tour to really experience the authenticity of the town. The tours are offered through the visitor’s center, and can last all day, depending on which one you choose. Many different events and summer festivals are happening in Lindsborg, but the Svensk Hyllningsfest is worth a visit if you’ll be around in October. Beginning on October 13th, the festival is a biennial celebration of the Swedish culture and settlers that came to the area in the late 1800s. With an array of ethnic foods and cultural dances and music, you will feel like you’re spending the day in Sweden, rather

than in Kansas.

The Midsummer’s Festival is happening this year on Saturday, June 17th, and is a national Swedish holiday, and therefore one of the biggest annual festivals in the area. Expect to see the raising of the Midsommarstång, the Midsummer Pole or May Pole, which signifies the ring dance. The ring dance is a traditional dance to celebrate the summer and the setting of the sun, which bring new life and a new season with everything vibrant and in bloom. In Sweden, this holiday rivals the importance of Easter and Christmas, so the traditions stand firm and true.

Wichita is the largest city in Kansas, and boats lively botanical gardens, the Cowtown Museum, the Museum of World Treasures, the Wichita Art Museum, and much more. The botanical gardens, Botanica Wichita, open in 1987 and has sense been adding to their four original gardens. They now have over thirty additional gardens, all with different themes and exhibitions. The Children’s Garden is great for little ones, and the other themed gardens are magical for all ages, like the Chinese Garden of Friendship and the Butterfly Garden. Adult admission is only $7, and with more than 4,000 different plant species, the gardens will keep your senses busy for a full day of fun.

If gardens aren’t your thing, but you enjoy wildlife, head to the Tanganyika Wildlife Park, where you’ll find exotic animal species in a serene atmosphere. You can also host a variety of different parties and events at this “premier event facility,” so if you’re looking for a unique place to choose as a venue for your next upcoming occasion, the Tanganyika Wildlife Park is a great choice. General admission to the park is only $20 and the park offers special behind-the-scenes experiences, such as swimming with penguins or a signature animal meet and greet!

Topekais the capital city of Kansas and in the spotlight for good reason. There are plenty of annual events to attend, including the Sunflower Music Festival, the Spirit of Kansas Blues Festival, and Fiesta Mexicana. The Sunflower music festival attracts worldrenowned musicians to play orchestra concerts and chamber music, as well as jazz. The Spirit of Kansas Blues Festival is a favorite among the locals, and hosts blues musicians from all over the United States, as well as tons of great food. There is no admission charge for the festival, which takes place on July 4th at Lake Shawnee. The festival is put on by the Topeka Blues Society and this year will be its 5th year.

Fiesta Mexicana is a fundraiser that hosts a jalapeño-eating contest, as well as two stages with multiple acts, including authentic dances and cultural traditions. Enjoy traditional music, street parades, and Mexican foods as you walk around the Oakland neighborhood, where the festival will be in full swing for five nights in July. Be sure to check out events listed on www.visittopeka.com, and read up on the “17 things to do in 2017,” where you will find information on touring the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, as well as attending fairs, dinner shows, and art walks.
