As the summer sun starts to rise in the sky, foodies everywhere emerge from their winter hibernation in search of the ultimate summer cuisine. Understanding history is a priceless asset in predicting what our futures can hold. Looking over the progress humanity has made in hopes of living a better life can help us find purpose and appreciate what we have accomplished today. Walking through an old city, it’s easy to see the physical effect of time as the present rises from the past. Likewise, where we came from and what kind of values we uphold today influence how we interpret culture. But how can we express what culture means to us in this modern age? Museums across the country work tirelessly to not only preserve our history and global footprint, but also to understand how that history shapes us as a society by analyzing the art that the past left behind. As with most topics, everything is subjective including your own definition of culture. But what stands true is that these museums are some of the coolest you’ll find here in the south! Our first stop is at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. This famous museum has housed a highly selective yet varied collection of art for decades. From humble beginnings in a family-owned state house on Peach Street, the High Museum has evolved into one of the most influential art museums of the South. Its prime location in the southeast allows for the local talent to step into the limelight and reveal exactly how culture translates into art. Make sure to visit the High Museum’s Hand to Hand: Southern Craft exhibit this summer for a closer look at 19th century southern decorative arts. From ceramics to furniture, this niche collection highlights how closely culture and art intertwine. At ﬁrst glance, everyday objects such as plates, quilts, and baskets don’t seem to convey any kind of meaning. But these displays are living relics of country life in the rural landscapes of the south.

Born from an era of civil unrest budding with social tensions, this exhibit represents the values and ideals held by the artists of that time. Through simplistic and otherwise mundane mediums, early artists convey the importance of a home, family, and acceptance. The High Museum of Art spares no expense in its strong dedication to “supporting and collecting works by Southern artists,” further emphasizing the heart and community of the South. Our next museum takes us down to Florida, where the sun shining in your eyes is more likely to inspire you rather than blind you. Especially after visiting the world-famous Dali Museum. The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida has immortalized the remarkable mind and artistry of painter Salvador Dali. Dali was an artist of deep reﬂection, introspection, heart, and imagination.

And while you’re at the Dali, make sure to visit the appropriately named Avant-Garden. Located on the waterfront of the pristine Tampa Bay, this garden is not your typical outdoor paradise. Inspired by Dali’s incredible landscape paintings, this eclectic yard is arranged into different designs that simultaneously evoke feelings of serenity and whimsy. Due to Dali’s focus on duality, the Avant-Garden unites art and nature, creating a perfectly balanced environment where man-made structures twist and sprout from the ground as technicolor flora naturally clings to every piece of art, including Dali’s Labyrinth. We dare you to get lost in this labyrinth—which is anything but a maze! Revealing a one-way path, the Labyrinth does not confuse you, but rather guides you in the right and only direction: forward. With no wrong turns in this maze of life, you are led directly to its heart by “simple persistence” and are greeted by a tall swaying cypress tree. Inside, outside, and from every angle, the Dali Museum is a must-see experience. It’s hard to reminisce over history without thinking about one of mankind's most intense battles. In New Orleans, Louisiana, the National WWII Museum stands testament to one of the greatest displays of power and destruction humanity has ever known. At the National WWII Museum, you follow the story of America’s impact on the world through her involvement in WWII. Learn about how the war was fought, how it started, and how it has changed the onward course of humanity forever. During the summer, this war museum will hold exhibits like Road to Berlin and In Memory of What I Cannot Say. These special exhibits highlight the war through the soldiers' eyes, taking patrons back in time. Partake in interactive experiences like the Beyond the Boundaries exhibit, which takes patrons on a journey through a 4D simulation of the entire war, from the battle on the ground to the fight in the skies. Or try holding your breath as you submerge underwater with the USS Tang Submarine Experience, boarding the “most successful submarine in World War II”. The National WWII Museum also offers guided tours behind the scenes where patrons can explore rare artifacts of war and learn about the process of preserving sensitive and aging materials. The High Museum of Art, the National WWII Museum, and the Dali Museum all offer an endless array of knowledge, art, and entertainment that is sure to spark in you a sense of wonder and excitement you’ll remember for years to come. No matter where you’re from, or wherever you call home, museums like these encourage you to take stock of what really matters in your life and how that influences your outlook of the world. The answer won’t always be crystal clear because, as with the art you will explore in these museums, everything you see is up for interpretation. Rural Life, located just off the picturesque Courthouse Square in downtown Denton, pays homage to Caroline County’s agrarian roots. Visitors to the museum will ﬁnd portions of four historic houses, including an entire circa 1824 log cabin home of a tenant farmer. The award winning and admission free Anderson County Museum has more than 12,000 square feet of gallery space. Throughout 11 permanent exhibits and rotating temporary exhibits, the history of Anderson County is presented via genuine artifacts and photos. MUSEUM The NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM, located at the historic Lorraine Motel where civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, chronicles the American Civil Rights Movement from 1619 to the present, and the world in transition because of it. Generations have taken a moment to reﬂect in the museum’s courtyard with the Lorraine Motel marque sign on one side and the balcony where Dr. King was shot on the other. They prepare for a transformational museum experience inside they will not forget. Through its interactive and immersive historical and contemporary exhibits from slavery to Black Power, from voting rights to immigration, from Jim Crow to Dr. King’s last days at the Lorraine Motel, the museum examines civil and human rights issues (then and now).

Ali’s International Impact On June 3rd, 2016, Muhammad Ali, Louisville, Kentucky native and one of the most recognizable and noted figures in the world passed away. Muhammad Ali’s spirit was more alive than ever, and it now lives on at the Muhammad Ali Center. The Ali Center Visitor Experience Located in the heart of historic downtown Louisville, the Muhammad Ali Center was founded in 2005 by Lonnie and Muhammad Ali. The 100,000 square foot facility, located on Museum Row, remains the only place in the world dedicated to preserving and sharing Muhammad Ali’s legacy.

Through interactive storytelling and multimedia exhibits, visitors will discover the “Six Core Principles” that Muhammad Ali embraced throughout his life: Conﬁdence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect, and Spirituality, and will learn how these values provided Muhammad the wherewithal to be the best athlete he could be, allowed him to ﬁnd the strength and courage to stand up for what he believed, and the inspiration to reach people around the world and dedicate himself to helping others. In 2018, the Ali Center added an Augmented Reality Wall to its newly renovated Lobby, as well as a remodel to its retail store.

Two years before, the Ali Center opened 1,640 square feet of new permanent exhibit space that includes inspiring “next generation” story booths, an interactive timeline of Ali’s humanitarian work spanning six decades, a Poster Pledge “video station,” and searchable digital databases of the Ali Center’s annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards. This renovation also included an additional 2,500 square feet of temporary exhibit space that is used for family-friendly exhibitions throughout the year and photo displays that will both inspire and enlighten visitors. Inspiration was Ali’s gift, and his Six Core Principles mark his true legacy—a legacy that has the power to live on, beyond the man, and beyond the walls of the Center. Tennessee is considered to be the birthplace of several genres of music, so if your love of music is just as great as your love of history, a trip to this state is for you. Start off by visiting places like Memphis and Nashville to get your musical ﬁx. Nashville is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Grand Ole Opry, which is widely known as “The Show that Made Country Music Famous.” Keep an eye out for the roots of Rock & Roll, arguably found in Memphis. There are well over 100 iconic names in music that all come from the state in general, and Memphis is one city that showcases a bit of history on them all. Take a step back in time while you visit one of the city’s many museums, such as the Rock n’ Soul Museum, Stax Museum, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame. The Blues Hall of Fame alone notes more than 400 names that all brought something to the blues industry, whether it be in full albums, nearly-lost singles, or literature itself. The Stax Museum is actually the original site of Stax Records, which went bankrupt and closed up in the mid-1970s. The area, widely known for its soul music, was dubbed Soulsville USA, and that was the nickname Stax Records gave their studio. This, in large part, was to counteract Motown Records, who called themselves Hitsville USA.

After Stax, head on over to Elvis’s Graceland. Graceland provides an inside look at the life of “The King,” and highlights his accomplishments, family life, and personal aspirations. The estate itself has been dubbed the “most famous Rock & Roll residence” in the nation. Prepare to view a wide variety of assets and memorabilia from the star, including his impressive collection of cars, the family tomb, and a tour of his home and music room.

New Orleanians believe in using music to make the most of the best and worst times. Music is a way to release your soul, and when it comes to soul, New Orleans has deﬁnitely got it. We can’t talk about music towns without paying homage to the great city of New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans is known as the birthplace of Jazz. No, there is no speciﬁc birthday for the genre, but all can agree that it came from the homes, bars, and streets of NOLA. It is the city of “Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Pete Fountain, Harry Connick, Jr. and the Marsalis family.” From festivals and celebrations like Mardi Gras and Jazz events, all the way to funerals, the music never stops here.

In more recent decades, Atlanta has made its way to the forefront of music towns, with heavy inﬂuence in genres like hip-hop, R&B, and soul. The city picked up its feet in the 60s and 70s, and by the early 90s, Atlanta was the place to be if you were an up and coming artist of one of the mention genres. With a plethora of producers calling the area home, Atlanta is constantly a

place for signing record deals and introducing new talent to the industry. There are a wide variety of clubs in the downtown district that feature guest DJs and artists from all over the world. If you are a fan of hip-hop and R&B, you won’t regret a trip to ATL. The evolution of genres merging and talent blossoming in the area is uncanny. e are starting our journey in the Carolinas, so let’s make our way to the seashore of Cape Lookout first. Located in North Carolina, Cape Lookout is known for being an undeveloped seashore where nature lovers can find peace and quiet, and of course, their kind of beach scene. If cocktails and kids splashing in the water is not for you, you’re better off heading here. From April to November, you will be able to catch a ferry ride 3 miles out to these barrier islands. Go shelling, fishing, or kayaking, or enjoy wild horse watching, birding, and more. If you would like to stay here overnight, there are quaint, rustic cabins available to rent. You can also camp out directly on the seashore as well. Kayaking on the water is one of the more popular activities here. You will want to make sure you set up a float plan with park rangers and let them know what time you are going out. There are more than 100 miles of shoreline, and since you will be in the ocean, the likelihood of you floating away with the tide and current increases. To keep everyone safe, establishing a float plan is necessary. A float plan is nothing more than letting rangers know when you’ll be checking back in. That way, if they don’t hear from you by then, they know to go looking.

With sights of downtown Miami, you can paddle through the waters, explore the emerald islands, and catch a glimpse of the coral reefs. The park is full of history, with ﬁndings here of everything from pirates to presidents. You can hike the nature trails, go for a swim or a dive, ﬁsh, or snorkel along the reefs. Boating is also allowed here, provided you follow the rules, so feel free to take your own boat right into the park.

If you decide to camp out here, you will need to bring enough food and water to accommodate all who are with you for the entire duration of your stay. This is a primitive island, so even if you’re only staying for one night, bring enough supplies for two. This stretch of shoreline provides the privacy and uncultivated territory that is needed for any rugged beach vacation and is truly paradise outdoors. Let’s head further south to another gorgeous springtime outdoors oasis! Located in Florida just south of Miami, Biscayne National Park preserves the bay and the offshore barrier reefs that surround it. This is a beautiful outdoor destination for the spring season in the south. Ninety-ﬁve percent of the park itself is underwater, so this is a must-visit campsite for water lovers.

There are two camping areas within the park and both are located on islands: Elliott Key and Boca Chita Key. This is where a boat will come in handy, as there is no other access to these keys. Shower facilities are available at Elliott Key, but you’ll only ﬁnd toilets for use on Boca Chita. Still, Boca Chita seems to be the more popular camping island. Both are equipped with grills and plenty of great views and grassy areas. Bring plenty of drinking water with you, as none is provided. As mentioned, you can dock your own boat right on the island, with a nightly fee of course. The best time to go is between May and September, when all fees are waived!

If you love the outdoors, but you also need the comfort of a hotel, then you should deﬁnitely check in at our next stop: The Barren River Lake State Resort Park in Kentucky. The Barren River Lake State Resort Park is a haven for those who love the outdoors, but also prefer to have the familiarities of a luxury getaway. Spend your days on the water, surrounded by the caves and rolling hills of Kentucky, where the contrast between greenery and lapping waves bring you the best of both worlds. You can head out to the marina and rent a jet ski, kayak, or pontoon boat, and hit the waves! If you’re local and would like to bring your own equipment, there are plenty of docks and slips to park your boat or other water toys in.

Looking for something a tad bit more primitive, but still surrounded by options? Go camping at the park’s campground, complete with nearly 100 separate sites. The campgrounds are open until November 1st (they close for the winter), and there are dump stations, a central building with showers and restrooms, and utility hookups as well.

The resort park has a main lodge, the Louie B. Nunn Lodge, which has 51 rooms complete with all of the bells and whistles, and most of which overlook the giant 10,000-acre lake. The lake itself is ﬁlled to the brim with hybrid bass, large and small mouths, crappie, catﬁsh, and even walleye! Cast your line and you won’t leave without a catch.

Barren River Lake State Resort Park also has a lighted basketball court, two lighted tennis courts, volleyball, and a shuffleboard court as well. If you’d like to sightsee around the park, take to the hiking and biking trails, which are conveniently paved and wind around the different amenities within the park.

If you’re not looking to stay in the main lodge, try renting out one of the cottages. There are 22 cottages total to choose from. Take your pick between a cottage nestled in the woods and hills, or one with a lakeside view and plenty of open space for ﬁshing or taking a walk along the shore.

No matter if you’re looking for a seaside hamlet or a luxury park, you will be nothing short of amazed by these destinations. Be sure to book your trip in advance, as spring and summer are usually peak seasons for these areas. Enjoy your very own paradise outdoors!

The Blue Ridge Mountain town of Hendersonville blends outdoor adventure with Main Street charm, retail therapy and rich history to create a must-visit destination. Six special-interest trails allow visitors to create custom itineraries. Hendersonville has long been known as apple country. As people become more interested in where their food comes from, local orchards embrace agritourism, inviting visitors to pick their own apples, take hayrides through the trees and enjoy fresh-pressed cider and apple confections. The Crest of the Blue Ridge Orchard Trail showcases orchards, roadside markets and farm stands that are particularly popular during apple blossom season in the spring and harvest season, which runs from late August through October. Apples aren’t the only crop in Hendersonville. The Farm Market Trail lists five farmers markets across the county offering an abundant selection of fresh food. The Henderson County Curb Market has been a Hendersonville tradition since 1924. In addition to local fruits and vegetables, customers can purchase eggs, meats, cheeses, herbs, jams, jellies, honey and baked goods. In the spring, annuals, perennials and vegetable transplants are available to set out in flowerbeds and gardens. Artists have a special attraction to the mountains of Western North Carolina. The beautiful scenery and quiet tranquility make these hills and valleys a favorite place for practicing fine art and fine craft. Follow the Art Gallery Trail to find handmade jewelry, blown glass, pottery, sculpture, metalwork, paintings and more. From downtown shops on Main Street to small, tucked-away studios, these galleries exhibit the many talents found in Hendersonville and provide opportunities to purchase one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

Some of Hendersonville’s ﬁnest crafters express their talents through quilting. The Quilt Block Trail guides visitors to colorful, patterned blocks that hang on the side of barns, buildings and businesses. The quilt blocks honor the craft of quilting and often tell the stories of the places where they hang through their patterns and colors. For example, the block on the old icehouse building has ice tongs worked into the pattern, and the block at the humane society thrift shop has puppies and kittens. This trail has the added benefit of showing off some of the mountain peaks, gurgling creeks and sprawling farms that make up the county’s scenic tapestry. In recent years, Western North Carolina has become known for its handcrafted beer, wine and hard cider. The Cheers! Trail outlines Hendersonville’s producers of artisan spirits. The area is particularly known for hard cider with three cideries operating in the county. Bold Rock Hard Cider, the largest craft cidery in the country, has a state-of-the-art pressing barn, cidery, taproom and food truck in the rural Mills River community. The trail’s three wineries serve a variety of dry and sweet styles made from estate-grown grapes. Hendersonville also has seven craft breweries, from small, local joints to the palatial East Coast headquarters of Sierra Nevada Brewing. Officially chartered in the 1840s, Hendersonville is steeped in history. The Heritage Trail puts together a collection of historic buildings, museums and heritage sites to tell the story of the town and educate visitors about the past. Connemara, once home to the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Sandburg, displays his extensive library and continues the operation of his wife’s dairy goat barn. Oakdale Cemetery contains Wolfe’s Angel from “Look Homeward Angel” by Thomas Wolfe. Flat Rock Playhouse, the state theater of North Carolina, produces highenergy performances nearly year-round.

Standing at 5,946 feet above sea level — more than a mile high — Grandfather Mountain has been celebrating and sharing the wonders of the natural world since 1952. Spring and summer are some of the most ideal times to visit the nonproﬁt nature park in Linville, N.C. — less than 15 miles from Boone and 70 miles from Asheville — as temperatures on top are typically 10 degrees cooler than those at the base of the mountain, which are at least 10 degrees cooler than in the surrounding ﬂatlands. One of the park’s best known attractions is the world-famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, a 220foot suspension foot-

Tennessee Mountain Tours is a friendly tour service that offers up everything from a short tour of the town, to in depth history tours, and, of course the tour we’re here for, the Moonshine & Wine Tour! The Moonshine & Wine Tour lasts for about 4-5 hours and comes at an affordable cost of about $45-$50 per person. The Upper Vineyard’s varietals also include Chardonnay and Merlot, along with Petit Verdot, Viognier, and Malbec. The Apple Vineyard, made up of Rabun Clay soil, produces Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and the Petit Verdot as well. The ﬁnal vineyard, Sunnyﬁelds Vineyard, is the newest vineyard on the property. It was planted in 2003, and produces Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Actual tours are not currently available, but you are welcome to book a private tasting on site. If you have a group of six people or less, you can take part in the public tasting, which is around $12 per person. The public tasting includes a souvenir glass as well. Private tastings must be booked in advance and are required for groups of more than six people. The private tastings are $20 per person, and come with all of the wines included in the classic/public tasting, as well as cheese, crackers, and two specialty reserve wines. Private tastings are only available during weekdays at this time. Along with the tastings, whether public or private, you will experience the wines in several different spaces.

We encourage you to head for Jefferson Vineyards. Jefferson Vineyards is a family-owned and operated winery that is geographically the closest to town. The estate itself is a part of Virginia’s wine history, and though some of the vineyards have been replanted, there is still a unique, vintage feel to the property. With four separate vineyards, the winery is able to produce quality vino with distinct ﬂavors. There is the Church Vineyard, which produces Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Merlot.

The Dillard House, located in Dillard, Georgia, has been around since the early 1900s, and is a family-run establishment. At the Dillard House, you’ll ﬁnd a large farm where you can pet the animals like cows and goats, and enjoy the surrounding mountains that bring in the famous blue-silver mist from the Blue Ridge. The farm is completely picturesque, and hosts will greet you with that expected southern hospitality. What was once a modest home of six rooms, has now turned into a large hotel, with nearly 100 suites and several dozen cottage on site to rent. You’re invited to stay in the house during your vacation, but you’re more than welcome to just head straight to the restaurant for a huge soul food feast.

Dinner is served family-style, where your servers will place countless amounts of side dishes, as well as several meats, biscuits, and pastries on your table all at once. It feels as though you’re sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner, only you’ll find the best of southern classics before you. Prepare for heaping piles of fried chicken, country ham, catfish, country fried steak, corn on the cob, calico salad, green beans, rice and gravy, creamed cauliflower and spinach, fried green tomatoes, yeast rolls, cornbread, and so much more. The menus change each day, so you’ll be in for a treat each time you come back. Each dish is completely homemade with the secret recipes that have been passed down through the Dillard family generations. The options for side dishes, specialties, and desserts overflow with variety, and the hospitality makes you feel as if you were in mama’s house for Sunday dinner. The Dillard House has been known to host celebrity guests throughout their history, including Walt Disney, Henry Ford, Arnold Palmer, and Thomas Edison, so the professionalism of the house is more than adequate.

Dinner will cost about $20 per person, and everything is endless, so if you ask them to bring out a 4th plate of chicken, expect it in a jiffy! In the 1940s, there were 16 distinct tea rooms in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Today, only one remains: Mary Mac’s Tea Room. Mary Mac’s is still standing some 60+ years later because of its trusted recipes and true southern charm. Guests say there is nowhere else they’d rather eat fried okra, and it is recommended that you ask for Pot Likker on your ﬁrst visit. What in the devil is Pot Likker? A simple veggie (turnip green) broth, served with “cracklin’ bread.” It sounds simple enough, but folks can’t get enough of it, and if it’s your ﬁrst time, they give you a cup to try for free! The menu is impressive, with a variety of dishes to satisfy any traveler hoping for authentic soul food. Fill up on the lightly-fried okra, shrimp and cheese grits, deviled eggs, chicken livers, salmon croquettes, spiced apples, and so much more. Mary Mac’s is a local favorite that continues to put smiles on both the tourist and the community faces alike.

Eagle’s Restaurant is quite possibly Birmingham’s bestkept secret. It’s close to downtown, it’s small, and it features cafeteria style lines. On the outside, it doesn’t seem appealing, but once you get in line and order your food, you’ll have a change of heart. The simplicity of the restaurant is what becomes most appealing, and the cafeteria lineup is one that changes all the time, so you’re in for a treat each time you walk through the doors. The family-owned Eagle’s Restaurant is situated nearly next door to the local Farmer’s Market, which supplies all of the restaurant’s produce. Enjoy fresh cabbages and greens, along with all fresh fruits for pies and cobblers. Dinner comes with a choice of meat and two sides, similar to the tea room style, along with a piece of cornbread. Weekly choices include: fried chicken, smothered pork chops, chitterlings, and the famous neck bones with potatoes, which is a must-try item. Sides range from fried corn to stewed okra and tomatoes, and other classics like collard greens, pinto beans, and candied yams. A TRADITIONAL SWEET TREAT FOR THE SOUL Sweet dough pies have long been held as a culinary tradition in St. Landry Parish. Inexorably linked to the pâtisseries of France, a connection that permeates both Creole and Cajun, these pies are as much a part of the parish’s identity as zydeco music and seasonings that make any dish taste just right. One of the long-standing practitioners of the art of sweet dough pie making is the Hertzock family of Yam Country Pies located in the Zydeco Capital of the World, Opelousas. Over 50 years of experience colors the made-fromscratch pies that decorate the shelves of this family-owned bakery. “It started in the cafeteria of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church,” says the Hertzock matriarch, Patricia, about the ﬁrst pie she ever made. “My aunts needed help making some for the congregation, and it just grew from there.” Similar stories were told by her daughter, Lucretia, and son, “Dough Master” Conrad. True comfort food taps into the nostalgia of time spent with family and friends, and the Hertzock family has perfected the soul of this idea in their pies.

But what makes a sweet dough pie different from any other pie? If you ask Patricia, she would just laugh and say, “It’s in the name.” The verbatim way she interprets the question belies her practical nature, but there is still more to be said about the saccharine taste of a sweet dough pie. The melt-in-your-mouth crust, slathered with ﬁllings ranging from the Herzock favorite, sweet potato, to the slight crunch of coconut and all the ﬂavors in between, make for an experience that leaves people coming back for more. “Dough Master” Conrad has his own interpretation of the question.

“The difference is in the tradition,” he explained. As Yam Country Pies’ jack-of-all trades, he is also in charge of acquiring the locally-sourced sweet potatoes for their pies. In the past, sweet potatoes and yams were a large part of the culture of Opelousas. He spoke on the importance of

keeping their recipes old-fashioned, “If we don’t keep the tradition alive, who will?” Yam Country Pies is not the only place in St. Landry Parish where you can ﬁnd these great tasting pastries. The Kitchen Shop, located in Grand Coteau, Louisiana the

Sweet Dough Pie Capital of the World, lauds their own award-winning, blackberry sweet dough pies. Ray’s Bakery in Eunice also carries an impressive spread of flavors. If that is not enough sweet dough pie for you, there is also a festival dedicated to this iconic treat. Every year, pastry chefs and home cooks vie for first place in the sweet dough pie contest. This year the event will be taking place on October 26 from 9am-3pm at the historic St. Charles Borromeo Church in Grand Coteau. There are many things we know and love about the Magnolia State, including Vicksburg and the gulf shores, but did you know that Mississippi is the birth place of Kermit the Frog? Puppeteer Jim Henson grew up in the swamplands of Leland, Mississippi, which is now home to a permanent exhibit for the icon and his creator. Born in 1936, Henson spent his childhood like many of us, playing outdoors. His inspiration for Kermit came to him long after, but it was those early days that sparked his beloved dream. When Leland officially recognized itself as the birthplace, there was a celebration in which the town was given three of the original Muppet ﬁgures to display: Dr. Teeth, Chester the Rat, and The Swedish Chef. The puppets, of course, had to be given back after the celebration came to an end, but later one, Henson’s wife donated the original Kermit the Frog puppet to the town’s exhibit. Today, you can go visit

the birthplace of this iconic character, view a plaque created in his honor, and even take pictures with the giant stuffed frog himself. Another obscure tourist attraction that is worth a look is Mammy’s Cupboard. Mammy’s is known for being a “politically incorrect” building that still serves up lunch and desserts today. The building itself is a large red brick structure in the shape of a hoop skirt, with a single door in the center of the brick. Atop the brick sits a sculpture of the torso and head of a maid holding a serving tray. The peculiar building was built in 1940, but after the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s, Mammy’s started to get some unwanted attention, so it was decided that her skin tone be lightened (it was originally a very, very dark brown). Now in full “swing” with a gift shop and all, Mammy’s is one piece of history you won’t want to miss.

Mississippi is full of many avenues of diversity and a history that runs as deep as the famous river. For those who enjoy that caliber of historical signiﬁcance, Vicksburg is the place to be. The National Military Park in Vicksburg holds an important place in American history, and is deﬁnitely a place everyone should make time for. The National Park Service presents a historical quote about the geographical importance of Vicksburg to turn the Civil War in the Union’s favor: “President Abraham Lincoln told his civilian and military leaders, ‘See what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key! The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket...We can take all the northern ports of the Confederacy, and they can defy us from Vicksburg.’ Lincoln assured his listeners that ‘I am acquainted with that region and know what I am talking about, and as valuable as New Orleans will be to us, Vicksburg will be more so.’”

The white sands of Biloxi Beach are soft and comforting, and the weather is mild.

Because of this knowledge, The Battle of Vicksburg, which is also known as the Siege of Vicksburg, took place to obtain the land and thus divide the south to win the war. The Union soldiers that fought in this battle were led by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, while the Confederate soldiers of the area fought under the command of Gen. John C. Pemberton. Pemberton ultimately surrendered to Grant on July 4, 1863. His soldiers were dying of starvation, and the explosions and attacks were happening more frequently, so Pemberton had little to no choice other than to give up. This is only a tiny morsel of the history that is Vicksburg. Today, the National Military Park in Vicksburg is widely popular, and many visitors enter the park each year to wander the memorials and war houses. Within the park, you’ll be able to see the original guns used during The Battle of Vicksburg, along with walking through the actual ﬁelds where the battle took place.

DOWNHILL DESTINATION

Since the middle of 2018, downhill mountain bike trail designers have been creating some of the most challenging downhill vertical mountain biking trails east of the Rockies. At Lake Leatherwood Park, 5 minutes from downtown Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the new trails have been discovered by an amazing number of professional downhill cyclists from across the entire country and abroad. Seven unique trails, similar to ski slopes, are rated by green dots, blue squares and black diamonds, with one extremely advanced trail rated as a double black diamond, only recommended for the most experienced, professional downhillers. However, there are excellent family trails for the not so adventurous and an abundance of flat trails that cross Leatherwood Park. 35 miles of trails exist today with an expansion of an additional 25 miles planned this year.

One of the most interesting aspects of the riders of all levels is the use of Go-Pro cameras to capture their adventure. From amateurs to pros, some incredible videos of downhill riders have been captured. As the development of an incredibly powerful compliment to adventure tourism, Eureka Springs is also home to additional trails. These include those at the Great Passion Play which are predominately family friendly and make a visit to the Great Passion Play campus a unique experience. The Walton Family Foundation was instrumental in the development of the Lake Leatherwood trails with the purchase of 35 acres donated to the City. Additionally, the Foundation purchased a large tract of land called Marble Flats, on the north side of Eureka Springs, which is being designed as a type of ďŹ&#x201A;at track experience with jumps and a variety of obstacles to make for a great biking experience. The beauty of the downhill mountain biking in Arkansas, is riders can enjoy trails year around. Arkansas weather is generally mild, even in winter. Trails are open 7-days a week. To assist riders, shuttle services are available to transport riders from the bottom to the top of the mountain daily. As many are 150 riders a day have run the trails since the expansion, but with Leatherwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seven downhill trails, there is no waiting. Fifty years ago this August, hundreds of thousands of fans converged on Woodstock, NY for three days of peace and music. These days, a Georgia city by the same name is becoming known as a music mecca. Thirty-two acts performed at the original Woodstock festival. These 32 happenings are why music lovers should plan a trip to Woodstock, GA this year. Friday Night Live (#1) is the first Friday of each month March to December from 6 to 9 pm in Downtown Woodstock. The event always has a fun theme. Shops and restaurants stay open late with sales and specials.

Bands perform at two locations on Main Street. Greenprints Alliance’s Trailfest (#2) benefits Woodstock’s trail system on Saturday, May 4 th at the Elm Street Event Green. Headlining this year’s festival is Atlanta’s Blair Crimmins and the Hookers. Reformation Brewery hosts regular music events each month. Reformers Live (#3), Open Jam (#4), and Musicians Open Mic (#5). Cadence Fair (#6) in the fall is an all-day festival with a full line-up of bands and unexpected surprises like fire eaters and stilt walkers.

Madlife Stage and Studios delivers perfect evenings for concert goers and performing artists alike. The space is visually intimate and sonically correct so there’s great energy for regular events like Dueling Pianos (#7), Patio Music Nights (#8), and Undiscovered Artists Showcase (#9). There is plenty to do and see in Old Dominion. As the site of the first British colony to settle in America, the story of Virginia is a long one. Its ancestral status beckons many historians and tourists alike. Although in ruins, Jamestown has been preserved and made into a learning experience. In what is known as Williamsburg today, you can visit and tour the old settlement of Jamestown to learn about the English’s early days in North America. The Jamestown Settlement is coined as a “living museum” because of its open and realistic design. Explore near exact replicas of the three ships the British arrived in—the Godspeed, the Discovery, and the Susan Constant. View countless memorials, preserved artifacts, and authentic battle armor and weaponry. But living history comes in many forms. For instance, if you hit the great outdoors in Virginia, you just might come across the Natural Bridge of Virginia. This bridge is made completely of limestone rock and reaches up to 215 feet in the air. Its unique bridge-shaped growth pattern actually serves as a functioning bridge, connecting either side of the old US Route 11. Granted park status in 2014, Natural Bridge Park was once crossed by George Washington himself, leaving behind his initials and a survey marker during his expedition of Virginia. With so much happening on the coast, early settlers didn’t give as much thought to the natural world of America as we do. However, Natural Bridge Park barely scratches the surface. Visit Breaks Interstate Park, also known as the “Grand Canyon of the South”, the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi River that shares part of its acreage with Kentucky. Mostly in Virginia, the Breaks Interstate Park is a natural marvel very much like the Natural Bridge. Its undisturbed depth and beauty make way for a remarkable outdoor adventure. Hike Pine Mountain, paddleboard in Laurel Lake, or bike one of the many trails available in the park. No matter which activity you look forward to the most, a trip to Virginia this spring is a sureﬁre way to experience a little bit of everything in the south.

CELEBRATING AMERICA’S HOMETOWN HEROES Honor. Respect. Patriotism. Too often, those words are tossed around—just clichés or campaign slogans. But in the small Virginia mountain town of Marion, these words mean something. Since The Overmountain Men marched to Williamsburg in 1775 to join Patrick Henry in the American Revolutionary War, Marion and surrounding Smyth County has had native sons, and later daughters, serve in our nation’s military. This year, as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of World War II and the 100th of World War I, there will be many programs, parades, celebrations all across the country. But none like you’ll ﬁnd in Marion, Virginia. Maybe it’s the active members of the local VFW Post 4667. Maybe it’s the family connections to those named on the obelisks and monuments lining the quaint courthouse lawn. Or maybe it’s in the hearts of her citizens who truly keep their promise to the gold star families to “Never Forget”. But for many reasons, US Senator Tim Kaine called Marion “One of the most patriotic towns in America”. It is something to see for yourself. Visit Marion Memorial Day Weekend. You’ll meet VFW

members, volunteers, even the Town Mayor as they pitch in to build a display to honor lost veterans. White crosses, emblazoned with a name and branch of service and topped with a crisp American ﬂag marks yet another soldier, sailor, airman, Marine. The display of over 1,200 markers surround the permanent war memorials on the Smyth County Courthouse Lawn, now stretching to nearby churchyards and the grounds at Town Hall. Day and night, the solemn display draws visitors looking for lost loved ones, thinking of those who’ve given their all for our country. Memorial Day Monday brings a Grand Parade along Main Street, then a community cookout and program at the VFW Post. Flag Day. Rolling Thunder visits. Independence Day. “Spirit of ‘45” Day honoring our surviving WWII vets each August. Patriot Day. Veteran’s Day. Time and time again, this tiny town comes together to remember her heroes, to pay their respects, to show true, unabashed patriotism.
