Behind the Scenes Hero

We often celebrate our crews for projects well done, but have you ever thought about the unsung heroes who help jobs get completed?

Meet Yancey Smiley, our Indianapolis area Fuel and Lube employee. Yancey has fueled our jobs since 2014. Before that, he spent 29 years as an operator. A day in Yancey’s life starts out much earlier than the crews’, planning his route for the 10-15 jobs where equipment needs to be refueled. The amount of logistics and strategy that goes into this takes dedication, and that is exactly what Yancey delivers.

We asked Yancey about the skills it takes for this position, and we learned it takes a wide variety. First and foremost, he described self-motivation and self-management are key. Yancey is always on-call, ready to go wherever superintendents determine he’s needed. It is then up to him how he goes about the request. Yancey said this takes being flexible; if there is a job that needs fuel more than another at a certain moment, he might need to adjust his entire route.

Trust is an absolute must-have. Superintendents need to trust Yancey will be where he says he will – and they do. During his nine years, Yancey has been able to build those relationships and be a reliable asset to our jobs.

Yancey says he is always thinking forward. Jobs are constantly moving forward each day, and Yancey proactively plans his day based on where he knows crews will be working. Although, it can get quite chaotic to fuel 10-15 jobs at a time, Yancey says the most rewarding part is seeing projects come to life. Each day is an opportunity to see asphalt laid, bridges built or concrete poured, and Yancey gets to see each job in action when coming to refuel.

Yancey, thank you for being a behind the scenes hero. Because of you, we make lives better, one road and bridge at a time.

DEPARTMENT UPDATES MILESTONELP.COM

Joe Thomas named Area Manager of Fort Wayne

Joe brings an abundance of knowledge to our Milestone team, with more than 24 years of experience in the heavy highway industry, encompassing all aspects of concrete and bridge construction. Joe has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from Purdue Fort Wayne.

Joe and his wife, Lisa, have been married almost 25 years and have four children, Allison, Emily, Tyler and Grace. Of course, they can’t forget their fur babies, Patch and Lola.

When Joe is not working, he enjoys going to the lake, playing hockey, water and snow skiing. He and his daughter, Grace, also enjoy restoring an old wooden boat with the goal of finishing it up before he retires. Congrats to Joe in his new role!

Amy Bingham Achieves BCSP Certification

Safety Representative, Amy Bingham, has completed all requirements for a Board of Certified Safety Professionals® (BCSP®) certification of Construction Health and Safety Technician®(CHST®) and now Safety Management Specialist (SMS).

A SMS is an experienced professional with safety management skills which can be applied on a full- or part-time basis as part of that person’s job duties. Some examples of an SMS’s activities include: defining and utilizing an organization’s safety management systems, risk management, incident investigation and emergency preparedness. These professionals also must maintain current knowledge of safety, health, and environmental concepts to identify the business case for safety.

Safety issues have become more complex, and today’s safety professional must continually be better qualified. “Safety, health and environmental practice relies on the knowledge and skills of its practitioners,” explains BCSP’s CEO, Christy Uden, CAE, IOM. “We are proud of those who join us in advancing safety through quality certification.”

BCSP credential holders are among the most highly trained, educated and experienced individuals in the safety field. Having achieved a BCSP certification shows that the individual has mastered the core competency required for professional safety practice. Certificates recertify every five years to maintain certification, ensuring they remain knowledgeable in their practice and continuously improve the profession.

Congratulations, Amy, on this achievement, and thank you for always pushing to be the best you can be!

HR UPDATE

Safety Day

Our Milestone Safey Team hosted the first annual Safety Day this March. They invited ten vendors: Heritage Wellness Center, Milwaukee Tool, Hero Wear, PEP Safety, United Rentals, and more to teach our employees all about up-and-coming safety products. Employees who attended were able to receive free gloves and safety glasses from our generous vendors. A few lucky employees were able to win prizes in our raffle! Lastly, we can’t forget to mention the delicious taco truck for lunch!

While attending the Safety Day, we were able to ask employees and leaders how they demonstrate the importance of safety to the team. One thing was clear, many said you must “lead by example.” This means doing the right thing-always. Even if it takes extra time or an extra step, everyone on the team should make it home safely and it only takes a spilt second for an accident to occur. Bryce Loweth, Safety Representative, says that he demonstrates the importance of safety by continuing his knowledge of safety measures, he does this by reading industry news, and watching safety videos. Bryce is a great example of living out of our value—Build Long Term Relationships. These relationships and immense care for team members make him passionate about spreading safety messages. We also talked to another employee, Chad Little. We asked Chad how he motivates a teammate to do the right thing. He says it all starts within yourself. “You’ve got to do it first” says Chad. By taking the lead and doing it first, this creates a chain reaction. If everyone on the team is practicing safety the right way, it becomes natural and a habit. Overall, it was a great day to reflect and reteach as we head into our busy season.

Thank you to our vendors for an educational and fun day. Another thank you to Russell and his safety team for hosting this event! We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

SPRING SEVERE WEATHER

Indiana spring is here, which means continually changing temperatures. This can bring tornados, dense fog, thunderstorms, and lightning. Storms can brew and pop up quickly, so it is important to know your team’s emergency weather plan when these conditions occur. A plan ensures that you or your co-workers can navigate the situations quickly and as safely as possible. Review Milestone Emergency Weather Plan below:

If a Weather Warning or Tornado Watch is issued in the area or lightning is observed, the onsite supervisor or his designee will verify if a warning is in effect, by weather apps or other resources.

Using a weather application, determine the distance of lightning and path of the storm, which must be at least 12 miles away for work to continue.

Lightning strikes must be monitored and when it is within 10 miles, all work shall cease, and employees should take cover in vehicles or buildings as necessary for at least 30 minutes until the storm has moved to a further distance.

SAFETY

What You Need to Know

Outdoor Lightning Safety

• If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.

• When you hear thunder, immediately move to safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up.

• Stay in a safe shelter for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder.

Indoor Lightning Safety

• Stay off-corded phones, computers and other electrical equipment that put you in direct contact with electricity.

• Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths, and faucets.

• Stay away from windows and doors and stay off porches.

• Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls.

Last Resort Outdoor Risk Reduction Tips

• If you are caught outside with no safe shelter anywhere nearby the following actions may reduce your risk:

• Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills. mountain ridges or peaks

• Never lie flat on the ground

• Never shelter under an isolated tree

• Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter

• Immediately get out and away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water

• Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (barbed wire fences, power lines, windmills, etc.)

Tornados or Storms

When conditions develop or warning sirens sound, the supervisor will act on the side of safety. If a warning is warranted: Field supervisors shall notify their employees to take cover immediately in an onsite building or low-lying area or vehicle depending on what the conditions warrant.

• Officer Personnel should announce the following as applicable:

• We are under a [Blank] (This may be either a tornado watch, snow advisory, etc.)

Severe Weather conditions have developed. In case of Tornado add the following message:

• Move away from the windows

• Close overhead doors in the shop and storage buildings.

Rob Duncan, Quality Control Manager for the Griffith area, retired after 37 years with Walsh & Kelly/Milestone North. Rob started out in plant maintenance before there was an actual Quality Control Department. When INDOT changed requirements for state work, Rob and another employee converted an old building in Griffith into the QC Lab and took courses on asphalt design...We guess you could say he paved the way! Under Rob’s leadership, Milestone North has consistently received INDOT bonuses for asphalt volumetrics.

Rob will be spending his time riding motorcycles and traveling with his wife, playing pickleball, and enjoying the greens as an avid golfer. We wish Rob the best in his retirement. Thanks for your many years of good service!

MILESTONELP.COM EMPLOYEE CELEBRATIONS

Celebrating Women in Construction Week

March 5th-March 11th we celebrated Women in Construction Week, to recognize the vital role women have in the construction industry.

The construction industry has long been a male-dominated field but has seen a shift towards gender diversity in recent years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the amount of women in construction is at an all-time high and has been increasing since 2016. More women are pursuing careers in construction as well as other traditionally male-dominated fields. The celebration of Women in Construction Week highlights the need for continued efforts to lessen the disparity of gender representation.

HC+M/Milestone have been working to address gender equality by promoting a supportive culture, providing equal opportunities for career advancement, and by investing in training and development programs. The benefits of a more diverse workforce in construction would lead to better outcomes for everyone including improved safety, productivity, creativity, and innovation.

This year’s WIC week we focused on highlighting the accomplishments of our female employees. It is time to acknowledge their contributions to the company and the industry as a whole. It is also an opportunity to encourage more women to pursue careers in construction and continue to break down barriers.

Thank you to all the women at HC+M for your resiliency, dedication, passion, and work-ethic you bring every day. You bring a diverse range of skills, experiences and viewpoints to the table which has enriched our work culture and helped us achieve our goals. Your professionalism, integrity, and teamwork have made a significant impact on our company, and we are grateful to have you as valuable members of our team.

We were proud to celebrate with you this week and every week!

COLUMBUS “SPREAD THE LOVE” #3

Our Columbus team is continually striving to make a difference in our communities. One example of that is the team’s dedication to and relationship with Love Chapel. Love Chapel provides services for Bartholomew County residents, including offering food resources in the form of static and mobile food pantries and hot meal sites.

This February, Milestone Columbus sent Niki Nolting, Lori Boas, Beth Brooks and Morgan Jones to Love Chapel to assist in sorting a large food donation. The group sorted a total of seven bins of food products to be distributed to the Bartholomew County Backpack Program and the new outreach program created by Love Chapel to extend the food pantry to their outskirt locations.

In March, Morgan Jones, Beth Brooks, Casey Loweth and Peter Soderstrom returned to Love Chapel to help with the Columbus community outreach pantry.

Thank you to all who volunteer at Love Chapel to help our fellow community members.
