“The most valuable function of the theater as an art form is to tell us who we are, and the health of the theater is determined by how much of that we want to know.” ~ EDWARD ALBEE, “The Decade of Engagement” As we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday we also celebrate how arts and culture have shaped our community, our history and our national identity, all of which have evolved since confederation. The Flato Markham Theatre provides enjoyment along with enlightenment. It connects us to a deeper sense of self embedded in everything from our national history and culture to the mosiac that allows us us to experience the world right here in our own community. Our 150th milestone makes it a perfect year to explore the wonders of our collective cultural influences through captivating stage performances.

At its heart, the Canadian experience, the Canadian identity, is about what we have all brought to make this country, not only one with a rich cultural experience, but the best in the world. Our theatre brings the community together in a spirit of appreciation for one another’s art and stories, music and dance. Happy Birthday Canada and let the shows begin!

I would like to thank the Advisory Board, Markham Council and staff, our cultural partners, sponsors, our residents, our theatre supporters and most of all the amazing performing artists of so many diverse backgrounds who come to share their many talents, without whom these magnificent performances would not be possible.

A reflection of the most breathtaking artistry of Canada and the world: each performance is brilliant in itself yet gains something essential by finding its place among the others. Canadian favourites from across the country come into harmony and focus alongside masterpieces from Russia, China, Ireland, India, Pakistan, Argentina, Iran, France, Greece, Great Britain, Latvia and the United States. Passionate, powerful, ever changing and enthralling: the show never truly ends. Expect the Best.
