Parish Council Bearing in mind that a stitch in time can save nine, the Parish Council are addressing a number of maintenance issues around the village: removal of a large conifer and invasive hazel hedge in the closed churchyard which were potentially damaging to stonework; and the restoration of the War Memorial ahead of the 100-year anniversary of the end of WW1. The restoration will be undertaken when a 75% grant from the War Memorials Trust is confirmed. Problems with the dog bin on Stowey Road have been raised with the District Council. Vegetation overhanging public highways often occurs during the summer months - did you know that home owners/occupiers have a legal responsibility to clear obstructions - please see the back page. The latest results from the A378 Speed Indicator Device show the median speed was 35mph (May) and 36mph (Jun) cf speed limit of 30mph. 15% of vehicles were travelling above 43mph. The intervention limit (36mph) at this location (Greenshutters) is the speed at which there is deemed to be a speeding issue. Efforts are being made to improve signage for heavy vehicles moving through the village; if you have evidence of particular problems, please contact the Clerk. The temporary closure of the A378 for drainage works on Mile Hill during July and August will inevitably result in more traffic on our lanes and call for greater care and vigilance from motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and riders. The results of the Community Plan survey arrived in July - thanks to all who contributed. A small Working Group of councillors and parishioners are now developing a draft action plan involving key stakeholders in village. The results and proposed actions will be presented for your feedback (and hopefully some volunteers!) at a public meeting in September. A public consultation meeting was well-attended in July to hear about the Glendale site development proposals ahead of any planning application. The audience feedback and questions will be considered by the developers. Copies of the proposals are on the website or contact the Clerk for details Finally, a big thank you to Peter Mills who is giving-up his footpath volunteer duties after many years of diligent work on behalf of walkers and riders.

Village Hall Management Committee The View from the Village Hall By the time this short article is in print the Summer Fete will have been and gone. Much effort has gone into the organisation and booking of really good attractions. To make it a great success all that is needed is a good turnout by the village and others. At present the weather looks to be less than ideal for the day but fingers crossed the Met Office have got it wrong, again, which will enable everyone to fully enjoy the afternoon. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Cream Tea event to be held at Langford Manor on the afternoon of August 27th. Thank you Ollie and Rebecca! Posters will be going up and there will be a mention on the Village Website when matters are finalised as the date approaches. The new boards at the back of the car park are looking really good. The Friendly Society Banner, the pole and the notice detailing the history of the items are hanging in the committee room. The ownership of these items is going to be decided in the coming weeks.

Fivehead Gardening Club My fingers are quite a pale tinge of green as I’m a bit of a novice gardener with much to learn, but I love to potter. I also like visiting gardens for inspiration and being in awe at their beauty. There are plans for having an Open Gardens Event next year in Fivehead and maybe even an entry in Britain in Bloom, so how about we start a gardening club to get together with likeminded people? It’s just a seedling of an idea (sorry, couldn’t resist!), but if you fancy meeting up at The Stable at 2.30pm on Wednesday 16th. August we can see what blooms. Please let me know if you can’t make it and I can update you on future plans. Pip Brett:

Fivehead Playing Field News

Do you shop at Tesco’s ? If so, you can help us to get money for renewing the safety surfacing in our children’s playground, because we have wona place on Tesco’s national scheme to help charities. So every time you shop at Tesco’s at Langport store, right through to 31st. August, make sure you ask at the checkout for a little round blue token and put it in the Fivehead box near the exit. The more tokens in our box at the end of the campaign the more we stand to gain.

Summer Fete – Never mind the weather. The weather wasn’t very kind to us for the Summer Fete on Saturday 22nd. July. Several of the main attractions- the owls, bouncy castle, children’s sports and some of the vintage cars were not there because of the wet conditions. But in true British spirit, everyone had a great time between the showers, and the games organised by our committee- skittles, the ball box game and treasure hunt were kept busy throughout- so many thanks to you all for making it a success. It’s August, so it’s time for football

Yes, although the league season for Fivehead Football Club doesn’t start quite yet, Wellington Ladies FC. will be playing a series of friendlies on our pitch on Wednesday 2nd. August Tuesday 8th.and Thursday 24th, kick off 6.45.pm, and spectators are welcome. Don’t leave it all to us.

It’s difficult sometimes for our small committee of volunteers to find the time to do all the little jobs that need doing around the Playing Field to keep everything shipshape and Bristol fashion, and our previous requests for one or two others to join us to do occasional strimming, grass cutting etc., have largely failed. If you can spare an hour or two from time to time, let me knowFrank Doggett: 281549

Fivehead Fellowship and Leisure Club The meetings in June and July, while totally different in content, proved very popular and the members who were able to attend thoroughly enjoyed the talks. I am writing theses notes a few days before the annual village fete which will be over by the time you are reading them. Firstly, I would like to thank all those who so generously donated prizes for our tombola stall. The money raised on our stall will help to keep the club going hopefully for many years to come. Secondly, I hope that everyone who attended the fete had a very enjoyable afternoon and found plenty to entertain them and lots to spend their money on. The club will not be meeting in August so our next event is the Mystery outing on 5th September. The coach fare for this is £14. The coach will leave St. Martins Close at 4.00 pm and will stop somewhere for us to enjoy an evening meal and a drink or two before returning home. If anyone would like to join us on this trip please contact me on (01460) 282957. The next meeting in the hall will be on 2nd October and is titled “Route 60”. This is a road safety presentation by Steve Greenhalg and Rina Cameron. Visitors are welcome to these meetings where a charge of £1 per meeting for non- members will be made. Meetings in the hall start at 2.30 pm. If you have any enquiries regarding the club please ring me on (01460) 2829 Chris Jackson Chairman

What is Truth? This month’s article concerns the ‘T’ word. (No, it’s not about that ‘T’ man over the pond, though there may be a connection!) The ‘T’ word I am referring to is Truth. There has been a lot of talk recently about Truth – who is telling the truth, and how can I know who to believe? “Social media reports it, so it must be true!”“ I read it on Wikipedia.” (a website in which the public can ‘edit’ the truth)! Recently coined phrases include ‘alternative truth’ and ‘post-truth’. Is there still such a thing as truth? One of the most famous questions ever posed is “What is truth?” These immortal words were uttered, not by a modern politician, but 2000 years ago by Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Judea [John’s Gospel ch.18 v.38]. He was faced by a hostile crowd demanding their own prejudiced ‘justice’, based on spurious evidence and false claims. Ironically, the Truth was staring him in the face. Standing in front of Pilate was Jesus, the carpenter of Nazareth, an innocent man in a kangaroo court, facing a load of trumped-up charges. (Oops, sorry, I mentioned the other ‘T’ word!) Pilate knew that Jesus was totally innocent of all the charges, and yet he gave in to popular demands as he was afraid to stand up for the Truth. 2000 years later, the man Jesus who was sent to his death by Pilate is still what he claimed: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. He told his followers that he would be executed, but he also told them that he would rise from the dead three days later. This is the most amazing truth claim ever: Jesus is alive. Over 2 billion people today have come to believe in the Truth and their lives have been transformed. I have never met anyone who can prove Jesus to be a liar! At Fivehead Baptist Church, along with our Christian friends from St Martins and other churches, our faith stands on the simple but profound claim that Jesus is the Truth, that he rose from the dead and that we can know him today. Sometimes people think that Baptists are a weird sect, but actually we are simply a group of ordinary people who believe extraordinary Good News. Our guiding principle is that Jesus Christ is our supreme authority is all matters of faith and practice. If you want to know more about the Truth, we are hoping to run a course for enquirers – more details to follow. Alternatively, if you’d like to discuss any aspect of truth, I and other members of FBC would be delighted to have a conversation. Finally, during the autumn I will be preaching a series of sermons on what it means to be a Christian in a Baptist Church. You’re more than welcome to join us, or if you’re too shy, then feel free to listen in on our website www.fiveheadbaptist.co.uk/sermons (If you’d rather talk about guitars, then I’m also open to that! www.laurieguitars.co.uk) Rev Laurie Burn laurie@fiveheadbaptist.co.uk 01460 281033 www.fiveheadbaptist.co.uk
