It’s Time to Land the Plane In any profession there are peers in the same arena that have the same philosophical values about the industry. In the case of swimming, I typically talk to the same 4-6 people every year as we get our athletes ready for the final phase of each swim season. This final phase is approached differently by everybody, but some of the key ideas are the same. Some coaches use the word taper; some use the word rest; others use the term peak meet. Whatever the case, the goal of any one of these terms is to get our athletes to swim their best at the end of the season. One of my good coaching buddies has another way to look at this time of the season. He always told me that it’s time to land the plane. The work has been done, and we just need a soft landing. I like that analogy www.FleetSwimming.com
because it truly means that every little detail matters to have a safe landing. In swimming terms: your short course season is much like a long flight across the Pacific Ocean. There will be a good meal, maybe a good movie, but no flight is ever completely perfect. The reality is that there will be some turbulence and how you react to that change in cabin pressure. As athletes go through this process, whether it’s Copper, Silver or Elite swimmers, they have the opportunity during this time to control their outcome. This is done by trusting your captain and flight attendants, and following directions as you prepare for the landing. Let me make one thing clear: ultimately the perfect landing is based on what you did to prepare for this upcoming flight.
Having a safe landing is important, and following directions at the end of the flight can lead to a desired outcome. As you reflect on the short course season and put the finishing touches on what you believe could be a great swim season, an important item to remember is the success of your season is based on what you did from September to early February. The fine tuning takes place in the middle of February and early March. This is your captain Jack Maddan; as we start our final descent into the destination of your choice, please put your seat up, tray table back and make sure your seatbelt is buckled for landing. Final destinations include the following meets: 8-Under Champs, 12Under Short Course Champs, 13-Over Short Course Champs, TAGS and Senior Sectionals. I wish you all the best of luck, swim fast and GO FLEET!
