ood evening and welcome to Highbury for tonight’s Carabao Cup first round match against Carlisle United. We come in to tonight’s game on the back of winning our opening Sky Bet League One fixture against Rotherham United on Saturday. I think we had a hard week in the run up to the game, and the reaction we saw from our players after the preseason defeat to Preston was just what we wanted. I thought in the first half we played well, scored a goal and created more chances than Rotherham. We were organised and looked a real threat in the second half and we grinded out another clean sheet, and won the game 2-0.
We are off the mark and I think it is important in this league to start the season well against a very strong Rotherham team which is a huge compliment to my players. Everybody is fighting for a shirt which is fantastic, I can’t ask for anymore. The fans helped us create a good atmosphere on Saturday and there’s nothing better than rewarding them by winning. I think Saturday’s win will give us confidence and that is what is needed tonight. Carlisle are a strong team like they showed last season when then finished in the playoffs and they have had a good pre-season, including a win against Blackburn Rovers. It will be a big challenge for us. Obviously we
want to win the game, but it will be a big test for us. I’d finally like to welcome my former teammate Keith Curle, who I have known for a long time. I’m sure he will motivate his team for tonight’s encounter. I’d also like to welcome Keith’s staff and players, as well as their supporters and directors to Highbury and wish them a safe journey home. Enjoy the game,

KYLE READY TO PLAY CHILDHOOD TEAM WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL PICS: STEFAN WILLOUGHBY
Tonight’s game is special for Town midfielder Kyle Dempsey after starting his career at Carlisle United. Kyle Dempsey faces a club close to his heart in tonight’s Carabao Cup first round match. Whitehaven-born, Kyle joined Carlisle at the age of eight and made his first-team debut a decade later. In the 2015-16 season, the midfielder played 47 games, scoring 11 goals. “This is a massive game for me against the club who will always be in my heart. “Keith Curle, took me under his wing and believed in me. “The first season when I broke through was amazing. Being from the area, it was extra special. “After every single game, I would meet Carlisle fans when I went home and they were so lovely.

the team. I hope a lot of fans come down tonight. “It’s a short journey compared to many they make!” Kyle’s achievements at Brunton Park brought him to the attention of a number of clubs in higher divisions and he signed for Huddersfield Town in July 2015, still a teenager. Whilst relishing the chance to play against big names and clubs in the Championship, it was a case of ‘right club, wrong time’. This was to quickly turn round at Fleetwood. “From day one the gaffer believed in my ability and I felt it hadn’t been there at Huddersfield. “It was just what I needed and gave me massive confidence in every game.
“Even when I see them today they are so happy for me, a local lad who came through the ranks.
“I was soon delivering performances week in, week out for Fleetwood.
“It is such a tight community up there. Massive credit to them. I always look for the Carlisle result and still support
“When you know how much support is behind you, it makes a huge difference to your game.”
Kyle made 46 appearances last season, an impressive total considering that he did not start until the end of August and missed much of December through a leg injury against Walsall. “I think most of the fans probably don’t realise the full extent of what happened. “I still have the picture but I can’t post it on social media because it was a brutal gash. “I got caught by a stud and I took about twelve stitches. “I was in and out of hospital in two hours and back playing three weeks later, after only one training session. “The gaffer and I discussed the situation. It had to be carefully managed. “At first it was a struggle to regain my fitness and I had lost quite a bit of leg muscle. “My confidence came back after the two FA Cup games against Bristol City. “He made it clear that he wanted to have me fit for the vital run-in and that was a big vote of confidence. I came
through and my performances took off towards the end of the season.” Kyle was voted Young Player of the Season and the support he got made his decision to sign a three-year contract in May a ‘no-brainer’. “It was great to get the fans recognition with the award and I appreciated all the messages on social media after each game. “The backroom staff and players have been brilliant. I was keen to get the deal over the line in the summer. “I’m absolutely delighted to have signed for Fleetwood Town because I know what it will do for my game.” A personal aim for the coming season is to be involved with more goals and assists. Kyle hit the net twice in 201617. “In the Bolton game we were two-nil down. The ball dropped to me on the edge of the box. “I didn’t really think of anything but hitting it as hard as I could with my left foot and it flew into the top corner. “A lot of my Carlisle goals were from around the edge of the box, like the other one I scored for Fleetwood, at Gillingham. “I’ll be looking for pockets of space to drift into and double figures would be great. I cannot wait to get going. “You spend the summer trying to keep a fitness base. It’s not a long holiday, as many people think. You might get a couple of weeks off. “Coming through pre-season injury free is vital. You get a lot of battering to your legs and upper body and just have to battle and grit your teeth. “You feel good when you smash through it, though!”

KY LE DEMPSEY F EATU R E Saturday, 26th August will see Kyle walking out at Bristol Rovers. Had his career taken a different turn, it could have been Wembley in the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final with Wigan Warriors, where he played as a teenager. “I watched the semi-final and spoke to a few of the lads after the game. They are buzzing. There was a bit of banter on the lines of, ‘You could have been going with us.’ “It’s nice to keep in touch with them. They wish me well in football and I do the same with them in rugby. We support each other.” Back at tonight’s game, there will be a strong family contingent supporting the twenty-one year-old, as has been the case throughout his life. “The majority of my family will be there. The Carlisle fans are still absolutely amazing to them when they see them around town. “Dad hasn’t missed more than a couple of my games since I was eight. “When I was playing rugby as well, he took me down to Wigan on Mondays, a twenty-mile drive to Carlisle on Tuesdays, back to Wigan on Wednesdays and Carlisle on Thursdays. “He was up and down, up and down, fitting work in around me. To this day, I still don’t know how he did it. “I like to repay him with performances. Other family members have chipped in. Mum kept my head down at school whilst my Nana asks for every single programme and keeps massive amounts of stuff in scrap books!” Let’s hope that Nana enjoys her latest programme and has a match report to stick in the scrap book detailing a Fleetwood win and a Dempsey goal!

YOUR GUIDE TO FORTHCOMING HOME AND AWAY FIXTURES After playing twice at home in four days, we must wait ten days for more action at home. AFC Wimbledon (pictured right) will be the next visitors to Highbury in our final home league game of August, before we head on the road for back-to-back away matches. We drew 0-0 at Highbury last season, and another tough match is expected again against the Wombles. We end the month at Highbury by hosting Leicester City under 21’s in the Checkatrade Trophy. The competition allows three ‘overage players’, which could mean the return of striker Jamie Vardy to the Fylde Coast. In our first home game in September we host Lancashire rivals Oldham Athletic (pictured right), who will be hoping to avenge last season’s 1-0 defeat at Highbury. A Josh Law own goal was enough for the Cod Army to seal all three points.
In four days’ time, Rosler’s side travel to Northampton Town in our first away match of the 2017/18 season (pictured left). Rewind just over twelve months and this was the German’s first match in charge, a 1-1 draw with Victor Nirennold grabbing the equaliser. Town then make one of their longest journeys of the season south to Bristol Rovers for the final match of August. Darrell Clarke’s (pictured left) side won last season’s match at the Memorial Stadium, but the Cod Army took all three points in a comfortable 3-1 win at Highbury in January. A first ever visit to former Premier League winners Blackburn Rovers starts a very busy month of September. As a club, Fleetwood Town have only ever played Rovers once at any level and that came last season, as our Development Squad won in the Lancashire FA Cup semi-final. Goalkeeper Billy Crellin was the hero in a penalty shoot-out.

MANAGERPROFILE HEAD2HEADSTATS Carlisle United appointed Keith Curle as first team manager in September 2014, initially until the end of the 2015/16 season. Curle started his managerial career as player-manager with Mansfield Town and has also held the reins at Chester City, Torquay United and Notts County. An improvement in results led to Curle signing a new deal with the club in February 2016 which keeps him at the club until the summer of 2018.

INSIDEVIEW In a new feature, Craig Bratt speaks to opposition journalists ahead of Town’s matches. For tonight’s game, he spoke to the Carlisle News & Star’s correspondent Jon Colman to get his thoughts going into the game. CB: How has Carlisle’s preparations gone in pre season?
tickets
JC: Results-wise, no complaints. Carlisle won all but one of their friendlies and drew the other. Most were against nonleague opposition, although they ended their programme with a good 3-1 victory against Blackburn. At the time of writing they have made seven new signings, which has eased some of the concerns after a very quiet close-season, although there are still question marks over the depth of the squad in certain positions. Certain players have shone in pre-season, like Shaun Miller in attack, and now it is a case of finding out whether Keith Curle can find a good blend from the new faces and those who remained - and that they don’t miss departed players like Jabo Ibehre too much. CB: What do you expect from United this evening? JC: It is no secret that Carlisle’s finances are tight and so cup runs would be extremely helpful this season. On that basis I would be surprised if Curle rotates heavily or throws the kids in tonight. Two seasons ago they got as far as Anfield in the League Cup and would love something similar this time. They also took Derby to penalties last season so their efforts under Curle in this competition have been decent. He will take it as seriously as possible, I’m sure. CB: And what do you expect from the overall season? JC: It is fair to expect Carlisle to be competitive again, given the quality they have in certain areas. No team that can field players like Nicky Adams and Mike Jones should be struggling in League Two. A lot will depend on how they get by with injuries, because that affected a small squad last season. A couple of early blows in this department could really test them, but with a fair wind they could put a starting XI on the pitch capable of testing most
opponents. If last season’s defensive record can be improved significantly is it fair to expect them to go one better than last year. CB: We met last season in the Checkatrade Trophy - United winning. How much has changed since that meeting? JC: It is hard to use that game as any sort of marker, given the multiple changes Fleetwood made Carlisle News & Star’s Jon on the night. At the time Colman of writing, five of that night’s starting XI are no longer at the club, as well as some of the substitutes. Carlisle this summer lost some significant figures in Ibehre, Mark Gillespie and Michael Raynes; in their place have come additions like Richie Bennett, Jack Bonham and Tom Parkes. The other summer signings are Shamal George, Hallam Hope, Kelvin Etuhu and Sam Cosgrove, and most of those are likely to be in tonight’s squad. CB: How do Carlisle usually fare against teams from a higher division? JC: In the League Cup they have punched above their weight recently - beating QPR and taking both Liverpool and Derby to penalties. They do not tend to go out of it with a whimper so I’m sure they will give Fleetwood a test tonight. In the FA Cup they were beaten by a superior Rochdale side last season while the year before were no match for a Ross Barkley-inspired Everton. CB: What should Fleetwood be wary of this evening? JC: If, as expected, Carlisle name their strongest side, there will be the obvious threat from Adams, who topped the assists chart last season. Jamie Devitt has the quality to open up defences while Miller’s movement up front could examine the home defence. Captain Danny Grainger remains a threat at set-pieces, too. CB: Finally, a prediction for today’s game. JC: In the time-honored tradition of former players scoring against Carlisle, I’d put my house on Kyle Dempsey getting a goal for Fleetwood. But Carlisle to nick it 2-1.

The GAME Room has arrived at Highbury Stadium - and it’s set to ensure that children who attend games are in a console dreamland! GAME Lancaster have joined forces with the club and Community Trust to create a special room within the Lowery Suite that’s kitted out with the latest titles and consoles, and offers an amazing experience.
Full Time
The new facility will be open prior to every league fixture and will be available exclusively to children under 16 with tickets. Players can either pre-book their places on arrival for a designated time slot, or wait in turn to be able to play for a set time period at one of the six consoles. “We had a vision for this new room and knew from the start that GAME would be the perfect partner to make it happen - we’re delighted that they’ve been so receptive to the idea and quick to turn it into a reality,” said Matt Hilton, Director of Fleetwood Town Community Trust. “We believe that this facility will enhance youngsters match day experience. We’re really looking forward to seeing them enjoying the wonderful new facility that GAME have helped us to create”.
FLEET WOOD TOWN N IO T A C U D E L L A B T O FO PROGR A M ME Steve Stretch - Community Development Manager at GAME, is equally optimistic about what the partnership can bring to both parties. He added: “GAME are proud to be associated with Fleetwood Town FC and the outstanding work of the Community Trust in Fleetwood and the surrounding areas. We are both excited and looking forward to further developing the partnership as the new season progresses.” The GAME zone is now open and is available to fans at today’s game against Rotherham United.

ACADEM Y & YO U T H
ACADEMYONTOUR Since 2000, the Football Foundation has been transforming grassroots facilities across the country thanks to the generous investment provided by the Premier League, The FA and the Government via Sport England.
39,160 If every changing room the Football Foundation ever funded was combined, 39,160 players would be able to change simultaneously!
If every all-weather and natural grass pitch the Football Foundation funded was laid back-toback, it would stretch from London’s BIG BEN TO CALAIS!
x351
If every goalpost the Football Foundation funded were stacked on top of each other, it would create a structure equivalent to the height of 351 WEMBLEY STADIUMS!
x6 All of the Football Foundation funded natural grass pitches equate to an area that is SIX TIMES THE SIZE OF MONACO!
Fleetwood Town under 14’s have returned from a successful six-day trip to Iceland where they competed in the prestigious Rey Cup. Led by youth development lead phase coach Simon Wiles, Town’s youngsters came third in the competition, against much older and physically strong sides. “The competition itself was fantastic for the boys. We played a variety of different teams with different styles which was a really good learning curve.” The side flew from Manchester to Reykjavik last Wednesday, and spent five nights in the Icelandic capital and took part in a variety of activities off the field too. “There was an Olympic style Opening Ceremony which was great! On the other nights there was a Pool Party, Disco and BBQ which was all part of the great experience for the group. As a club we were really grateful we could take part in the competition.” Currently the academy train three times a week, so the opportunity for the squad to get away and bond as a team was one that couldn’t be turned down. “We’ve got some real characters and it’s been massive for the character building. “It’s a real good opportunity for the lads to develop on the pitch because, yes we took our under-13s which were quite a young age group considering the competition was the January to January birthday so we just took our own thirteens so they were coming up against some 14 year old boys who were a lot bigger. “I think the young players have taken a lot from the trip.”
The total area of every all-weather pitch the Football Foundation has funded is equivalent to NEW YORK’S CENTRAL PARK!
