CLIFTON LIBRARY PROJECT: 5.000 SF Clifton, Cincinnati Miami University Second Year Studio Spring 2011 Professors: J E Elliot Murali Paranandi Nazanim Kohododad Kimberly Martin
DESIGN INTENT: Weave the everyday lives of community members into the building function, blending seamlessly into the urban context. Clifton Library is a 5,000 SF project based in Cincinnati, OH that integrates the lives of community members with the fabric of the building. It began with a study of the character of Clifton and the way that architecture could emanate and propagate its atmosphere. It is a neighborhood focal point, allowing people to come into contact with it through a variety of experiences, ranging from casual and brief to deliberate and lasting.

MAKE PROJECT: Independent Studio Cincinnati, Ohio Miami University Third Year Studio Spring 2012 Advisor: Whitney Hamaker
STUDIO INTENT: This studio, independently developed and executed, posits an atypical design process focused on discovery, intuition, and the act of making. An exploration of the fundamental process of design begins as a rejection of the traditional tenets of architectural methodology in favor of a phenomenological approach. It seeks to define, to test, and to evaluate an alternative design process that uncompromisingly focuses on experience as reality.
PHASE 1 / MATERIAL EXPLORATION
Phase 1 is a rapid, intuitive exploration of concrete as a design and artistic material. Design intention method of manipulation, often utilizing found objects, without consideration of the final product. The p preconceived boundaries that govern the use of a material in design. How is design different without program, dimension, or plan?
n governs only the process frees itself of consideration of
PHASE 1 / EVALUATION Phase 1 then evaluates the objects and transitions into active design decision-making. How can these purposeless objects become functional products?
PHASE 1 / SPATIAL APPLICATION
The next exercise seeks to apply the design process to the a array of concrete objects cast in latex condoms hangs betwe
act of making space. The product became an installation in the central atrium of a university building. An een a skylight and the atrium’s mezzanine.
PHASE 2 / MAKING PLACE Phase 2 is an architectural project including client, site, and program, that specifically focuses on freeing the mind from preconceived definitions of “a building. Making, collaboration, and translation between media are the methods employed to design through intuitive creation.
PHASE 2 / MAKING PLACE Through a series of material processes, manipulations, and reinterpretations, the design carves a dwelling within an abandoned row home in downtown Cincinnati. The atmosphere seeks to capture what it is to extend one’s roots, to settle, to belong in that which is left over.
NORTHSIDE Mixed-Use Building Northside, Cincinnati Miami University Fourth Year Studio Fall 2013 Professor: Dr. Regan Henry
DESIGN INTENT: Design a building that experientially belongs in its neighborhood. It employs historic research and concrete spatial studies to truly learn the spirit of the place.
Northside was a semester-long project that began with intensive historic research that uncovered the ways in which the past has influenced the present urban environment. It culminated in the design of a building that captures the spirit of the neighborhood in its location, program, and aesthetic.
Emotive diagrams (pictured) study the physical patterns built up over time to understand the neighborhood’s present character.

ZEITGEIST: SPIRIT OF THE TIME Mixed-Use building located in the heart of Northside, Cincinnati. It is part brew-pub, farm co-op, produce market, and residential space. The facade echoes the proportions and organization of the neighborhood while the use of board-formed concrete, wood, aluminum, and glass place it in the present time. The result is a building that belongs in its place in both space and time - communicating a sense of modernity that has grown from the neighborhood itself rather than a transplanted, fabricated newness.

HOUSE ON PYRAMID HILL Single Family Residence Pyramid Hill Statue Park Hamilton, Ohio Miami University Fourth Year Studio Spring 2014 Professor: John Becker
DESIGN INTENT: This project is a single-family residence located within Pyramid Hill Statue Park. It seeks to truly meld method and representation through an organic, layered process performed on a single board over the course of eight weeks. The final presentation is a literal manifestation of the process.
It began with a study of the park, identifying its character, organization, and features. The site was chosen and the process turned to solidifying the views, circulation routes, landscaping, and cartography into a home. The methodology and intention of the design resulted in a residence that is deeply-rooted in the fabric of the park, yet carving out a private, intimate dwelling for the family it houses.
Climate Tower Resort Brooklyn Navy Yard NYC, New York The Ohio State University Comprehensive Studio Fall 2017 Professors: Andrew Cruse Bart Overly Team Members: Jake Pfahl Simon Beskitt
DESIGN INTENT: In a dense city, one must go up to get away. A traditional “resort” provides an instance of civilization in an exotic location, of built form in the wild. A resort in a megacity is the opposite. It is an instance of the exotic within civilization, of the wild within built form. Vertical Real(i)ty is a resort which provides the city with the only amenity not already found there – an alternative to itself. Vertical Real(i)ty offers a new model of collective urban lifestyle, questioning ideas of shelter, ownership, and the urban condition. It is a tower in the city and a city in a tower. It is a resort in New York City and a resort in the rainforest, the tundra, the forest, the desert, and the beach. It is a resort for the city through an inversion of the urban condition.
