|01 Clifton Library is a 5,000 sf project based in Cincinnati, OH that weaves the everyday lives of community members into the fabric of the building. It began with a study of the character of the place and the way that architecture could emanate and propagate its atmosphere. It is a neighborhood focal point, allowing people to come into contact with it through a variety of experiences, ranging from casual and brief to deliberate and lasting.

|02 The project focuses on the translation from narrative to spatial elements. All process work is performed on a set of boards, which become the final presentation— a palimpsest. In a future dystopia, zeppelin technology is utilized by the elite. It is a form of nomadic piracy, where travelers dock on the tops of skyscrapers for supplies to perpetuate a hedonistic existence far above the polluted masses.

|03.1 This studio, independently developed and executed, posits an atypical design process focused on materiality, intuition, and the act of making. Material Exploration: Concrete + Wax Phase 1 was a rapid, intuitive exploration of concrete and wax as design and artistic materials. Design intention governed the method of manipulation, often utilizing found objects, without thought to the final product. By freeing itself from final intention, the process freed itself of preconceived boundaries that govern the use of a material in design.

Wax Exploration: Melted wax was plunged into cold water in and out of various containers and volumes. Section cuts and spatial studies were conducted, testing the viability of architectural application and space-making.
|03.2 This studio, independently developed and executed, posits an atypical design process focused on materiality, intuition, and the act of making. Product Design: Sushi Dining Set Phase 2 evaluated the rapidly and intuitively produced objects and moved into active design decision-making. How can these purposeless objects become functional products?
|03.3 This studio, independently developed and executed, posits an atypical design process focused on materiality, intuition, and the act of making. Architectural Speculation Phase 3 is architectural project (including a client, site, and program) that will utilize a design process specifically focused on freeing the mind from preconceived definitions of “a building. Making, collaboration, and translation between media are the methods employed to design through intuitive creation.

|04 This project designs a building that experientially belongs in a neighborhood. Based in hermeneutics and phenomenology, it uses historic research and concrete spatial studies to truly learn the spirit of the place. Emotive diagrams (pictured) explore the essence of the neighborhood, its history, and its present. What are the patterns that have been preserved through time? How is the physical environment produced by the community? How does the space convey the spirit?

Diagrammatic study. Transparent section cuts through every building on the city block containing the building site. Features building and floor heights, street offset, fenestration patterns, materiality, and facade detailing.
WHAT ARE THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE LAYERS?
|04 The design seeks to allow a member of the Northside neighborhood to experience it as meaningful, to experience it as a place. The structure and method of construction draw upon the endurance and authenticity of the neighborhood’s spirit. The building is almost entirely cast-inplace concrete in a cedar plank formwork. In some places, the boards are tied permanently to the concrete, creating a finishing material that is a direct symbol of the construction method of the building.
