Beware of Scams!
As you embark on your life and academic journey in Canada, it is important to be aware of potential scams that may target students Here are some common scams to watch out for:
1. Financial Aid Scams: Be cautious of unsolicited emails or messages promising exclusive scholarships or financial aid Avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown sources FCT does not contact students for early payment discounts; the only authorized payment method is through the CIBC web portal
2. Rental Scams: Exercise caution when searching for housing to avoid fraudulent rental listings Scammers might pose as landlords, request deposits, and then disappear Always view the property in person and only make payments with proper documentation Note that cash payments and e-transfers are not traceable
3. Job Scams: Some scammers may target students with fake job opportunities Be skeptical of job offers that seem too good to be true Avoid accepting jobs without an employment contract, as workers without a contract may not have legal support in case of issues such as abuse and workplace harassment
4. Phishing Scams: Students may be targeted through phishing emails or text messages that mimic official institutions Be cautious of emails or texts requesting personal information, such as your passport details or banking information Verify the legitimacy of any communication by directly contacting the institution through official channels
5. Social Insurance Number (SIN) Scams: Guard your SIN carefully and be cautious about sharing it Scammers may attempt to trick you into providing your SIN through phone calls, emails, or fake websites The government will never ask for your SIN through unsolicited communication
As a student, staying informed is crucial If in doubt, ask FCT staff for help or connect with fellow students who can share their experiences Additionally, you can refer to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre Website for detailed information and further support
