We acknowledge that the land that Fleming College Toronto is on is the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands.
Fleming College Toronto has settled on this land and recognizes the importance of respecting the voices and history of all Indigenous communities. This territory is within the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe and allied nations to share and care for the regions around the Great Lakes. We are grateful to work on this land.
Fleming College has a long history of supporting Indigenous learners and has relied on its Indigenous Education Council (an advisory committee made up of local Indigenous leaders) for more than two decades. Simultaneously, both Fleming’s Indigenous Academics and support services have continued to grow. In December of 2015, Fleming College formally committed to Indigenous education by signing the Colleges and Institutes Canada Indigenous Education Protocol.
To recognize this heritage and close relationship, the Fleming College Toronto community would like to honour and provide a gift to our students with a tribute of an Honour Song conducted by the Drum.
It is a privilege to include Indigenous Peoples as an important part of the Convocation celebrations at Fleming College Toronto.
The sharing of the honour song honours all the hard work and accomplishments of our students graduating today. Our students are led on their new journey and through the following stages of their lives by the honour song. We respectfully request that you stand through the entirety of the honour song.
Chi-Miigwech!
Gchi-Dewegan (Big Heartbeat
O’dewegan – “Drum” represents all life.
The O’dewegan “Drum” is used in ceremonies, festivals, celebrations, and funerals.
There are different styles of drums that are used for different ceremonies. Every nation across Turtle Island (the name of North America given by Indigenous peoples) has their own teachings of the drum.
The drum plays the first sound you hear as a living being. Before you are born, the first sound you hear is your mother’s heartbeat. The drum represents the heartbeat of the earth, the mother of all.
In today's language, the motto on the Fleming crest means "Let the deed show" or “Let actions speak for themselves.” This motto inscribed on the Fleming family crest remains as true as ever.
Our College namesake, Sandford Fleming, arrived in Peterborough in 1845 at age 18. By applying his talents and knowledge, he helped shape this country and the world. His accomplishments include designing the first map of Peterborough and Canada’s first postage stamp. A surveyor and planner of Canada’s first railway, he also introduced Standard Time to the world. As the institution bearing his name, we strive to bring the same innovative spirit to applied education, believing that it’s not just what you know, but how you put it to use.
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Graduation is a time to honour your accomplishments and look to your future with excitement and optimism.

Today, I stand before you with a heart full of gratitude and a profound sense of accomplishment. The wise words of APJ Abdul Kalam, the great scientist and former President of India, resonate deeply within me: “A dream is not that which you see while sleeping; it is something that does not let you sleep.” And indeed, I am living proof that dreams can be realized at any stage of life.
My journey began in India, where I dedicated 19 years of my life to building a successful career in finance. Through unwavering determination and a thirst for knowledge, I pursued higher education, earning a Ph.D. in Finance, an M.Phil. in Finance, and a PGDBM in Finance. Alongside my academic pursuits, I actively engaged in teaching, research, and publication, immersing myself in statistics and operations research. With passion and dedication, I published more than 30 research papers in journals of international repute and even co-authored two books.
Despite my accomplishments, a longing for new horizons and a desire for personal growth tugged at my heart. In 2021, I boldly decided to embark on a new chapter in Canada, where I began my journey with FCT. FCT provided me with a comprehensive curriculum that equipped me with a deep understanding of the complexities businesses face in today’s interconnected world.
I want to emphasize that success is not confined by age or background. It transcends borders and boundaries. The key lies in seizing opportunities, embracing challenges, and never relinquishing your dreams. It has been a privilege for me to join the FCT community as a part-time instructor, where I have had the opportunity to impart my knowledge and contribute to the education of future professionals in the field.
So, my fellow graduate students, I implore you to dream big, work diligently, and never lose sight of your potential. Believe in yourself, trust your abilities, and let your passion guide you toward greatness. Stay committed to your goals, even when the road gets tough. Let us strive for sustainability, fairness, and inclusivity in all our endeavours.
Congratulations on reaching this significant milestone in your academic journey. May the future bring boundless opportunities, personal growth, and the fulfilment of your dreams.
Thank you,
NARINDER PAL SINGH Supply Chain Management – Global LogisticsA few years ago, I was in the same position as many of you now: ambitious and motivated but unsure of the future. But I want you to know that success is not only for a few people; it is attainable by anybody with unyielding dedication, grit, and passion for their chosen field.
I faced several difficulties throughout my graduate studies, from time-consuming research assignments to internal struggles that tried my willpower. I surmounted each obstacle, emerging more assertive and more determined than ever, thanks to persistence and the unfailing support of my mentors, friends, and family.
The ability to balance my professional and personal life was one of the fundamental things that helped me advance. Relaxing, engaging in hobbies, and spending time with loved ones is essential. It is crucial for longterm success to balance self-care and academic endeavours to maintain mental clarity and enthusiasm.
Remember that success is not exclusively based on academic performance or grades. It is found in the effects we have and the progress we make. As graduates, we have a unique chance to influence the future. Therefore, I encourage you to hold on to your goals, view obstacles as chances for learning, and develop resilience in the face of difficulty. Believe in yourself because you are capable of greatness.
Best Wishes for further success.
SINGH Supply Chain Management – Global LogisticsThank you for the incredible honour of receiving this prestigious President's Award. I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to God and to my family, faculty members and friends for their unwavering support and belief in my potential. I am deeply humbled to be recognized for my academic achievements in the Project Management Graduate Certificate program at Fleming College Toronto. This remarkable journey has been filled with challenges, growth, and countless opportunities.
I took a bold leap of faith to step into the unknown. Coming from my home country Ghana, my journey at Fleming College Toronto began in September 2022 with an eagerness to learn and make a difference. Due to my enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge, I embraced every obstacle as an opportunity for growth. The path was not always smooth, and there were moments of doubt and uncertainty. However, every dreamer knows that success lies not in avoiding challenges, but in facing them head-on.
My progress was not only a result of my own efforts. The incredible network of peers, instructors, and mentors at Fleming College Toronto provided me with motivation and support. We encouraged one another during difficult times and shared in each other's achievements because we understood that true excellence can only be attained through collaboration.
This is the beginning of another chapter. To my fellow graduates, I offer heartfelt congratulations. I feel incredibly honoured to have gone on this journey with you all. Let us keep the Fleming College Toronto spirit of togetherness and the lessons learnt in our hearts as we disperse on diverse paths.
With deepest gratitude and warmest regards,
