WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL from all over the world unite here in Providence, Rhode Island to create a global community of unique, artistic voices. Since 1981, Flickers, originally The Newport Film Society, has cultivated a local and international collaborative of cinematic education and entertainment to serve as a creative force in the arts by uniting various media and arts disciplines that nurture the artistic process and support a vital part of the community. The organization held its first official film screenings, as well as the state’s first International Film Festival, in January 1983 in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1997, we expanded our exploration of an artistic exchange between filmmakers and industry professionals with the very first Rhode Island International Film Festival. In 2002, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored RIIFF as a Short Film qualifier. In just ten years, 29 films screened at the festival have gone on to achieve Oscar nominations, with six receiving the coveted prize. Flickers is truly part of cinematic history in the making. 2013 promises to continue this tradition of greatness with a remarkable showcase of film. In venues in our city and throughout Rhode Island festival organizers will present over 200 feature length, documentary and short films from 65 countries and 36 states across the U.S. This year’s festival also sees the return of the informative RI Film Forum, a region-wide educational workshop geared toward bringing film production to the Ocean State. RIIFF has established itself as one of the world’s premier cinematic events, and Providence is proud to be the host city for this extraordinary gathering. I extend my warmest thanks and congratulations to all who work so hard to make this event such a resounding success. While you are enjoying the festival please take some time to explore our city. From the many diverse locations to our outstanding restaurants and cultural attractions, I’m certain you will find that Rhode Island is a fun, film-friendly neighborhood. This compact state is merely forty-eight miles long and about forty-miles wide, so please see as much of it as you can. Each area is diverse, rich with history and visually unique. One twenty minute road trip can take you from a vibrant cityscape to a scenic ocean drive and, if you keep going, you may wind up at one of our magnificent mansions. Believe me, you won’t be disappointed.

Dedication: Dr. J. Gerald Lamoureux Born in Woonsocket, Dr. Lamoureux was a son of the late Ovila and Leona (Sylvestre) Lamoureux. He remained a proud, lifelong resident of Woonsocket. Dr. Lamoureux was a graduate of Woonsocket High School, Class of 1938. During World War II, he worked at Pratt & Whitney Inc. for six years as part of the war effort after having volunteered to serve but could not serve. Following the war, Dr. Lamoureux continued his education and graduated from Providence College, Class of 1950. He then went on to receive his medical degree from Tufts University Medical School in Boston.

Dedication
In the 1950s he was a general practitioner in Woonsocket and delivered thousands of babies. In the late 1950s he returned to Tufts and received an advanced degree in Radiology. Dr. Lamoureux specialized in the field of radiology during a time when many cutting-edge advancements were made in the discipline throughout the 1960s.

Dr. Lamoureux was the last surviving member of six physicians in Woonsocket who established the former Mercy Hospital as a Catholic hospital to provide for a second (and at the time much-needed) hospital in the community. Dr. Lamoureux later spearheaded the campaign to raise the funds to relocate Mercy Hospital from its original location on Roberts Street to the new facility at Park Square and oversaw its subsequent dedication in honor of the late Congressman John E. Fogarty. Dr. Lamoureux was a three-term president of the medical staff at Woonsocket Hospital and served as Chief of Radiology for many years. He declined a number of offers from prestigious hospitals across the country preferring to dedicate himself to serving the people of his beloved hometown in a career spanning more than 40 years before retiring in 1993. Among his numerous civic accomplishments, he was the physician of the Woonsocket Police Department for many years and served on the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Work and Culture, Woonsocket Housing Authority and the St. Francis House. In service to the Church, Dr. Lamoureux was a lifelong communicant of Precious Blood Parish, was a member of the parish finance council, and led the campaign in the year 2000 to enable much needed repairs and improvements to the church and rectory. He is honored at Precious Blood in one of the stained glass windows. Gerry was a humble man who preferred his philanthropic deeds to be anonymous: he was a supporter of the Fr. Marot CYO Center since its inception; paid for the children’s nursery at St. Anthony Hospital in Cagayan in the Philippines; and contributed to numerous local, state, national and international charities and organizations. Gerry loved travel and visited many destinations throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and other countries. He enjoyed cooking, landscaping, maintaining his home and was an early proponent of following a personal exercise regime that consisted of running several miles each day.
Welcome to the 2013 Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival. This is our 17th year and it is quite a special one at that. As a community art organization with a strong educational mission, we begin planning each Festival almost immediately as one event ends. It is a year-round process and involves students from all across the globe who intern and volunteer for the Festival. From our KidsEye Summer Filmmaking Camp that had 43 youngsters (ages 8-17) to our Youth Film Jury with 27 high school students, our programs have an impact upon. Our college interns work with us on the annual Horror Film Festival, the Oscar® Experience: Providence Party, and the main RIIFF in August. Currently 12 student interns are on hand this summer and they have created this program guide, overseen our mobile app. They are working in development and event planning, and supervising volunteers. It can be a daunting taste, but when everything comes together, it is highly rewarding.

While there are far too many people to thank for helping us get to where we are today, I would be remiss if I did not mention the following people: Duncan Putney, RIIFF Advisory Board member, who has single-handedly created some of our best programs that we produce year-round; Alan Chille, General Manager at the Providence Performing Arts Center, who has been a quiet force behind our growth and community recognition. oseph Procopio just celebrated his nineteenth birthday. Meanwhile he’s busy completing the screenplay for his first feature film and trying to figure out how he’ll have time to shoot this feature next year while simultaneously completing a thirteenth short film—which, if it’s anything like Procopio’s most recent shorts, will win awards at a handful of international festivals. The usual stresses of a teenager.

Joseph Procopio is not your usual teenager. When most other children were still playing in the sandbox, this Toronto native was transfixed by Steven Spielberg’s E.T. (his favorite film to this day) and began watching “behind the scenes” footage. “I decided to explore my own story ideas,” he says, and soon made his first short film, Nine Times Eight (2004), which he wrote, directed, and starred in at the ripe age of nine. Nine Times Eight won awards at five international film festivals, including the Rhode Island International Film Festival’s (RIIFF) Discovery Award. Procopio’s love for film—and his success— snowballed. He has made at least one award-winning film every year since 2004, and he will be premiering his twelfth short film, Sundae, at RIIFF 2013’s Opening Night on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. The script for Sundae was impressive enough to attract the support of ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists), and in April, 2013, at 18 years old, Procopio became the youngest director ever approved to work by special permit with union talent under the ACTRA TiP Program for emerging talent. Procopio shot Sundae with a professional crew of 40. When asked about which directors influence him, Procopio offers Spielberg’s name without a moment’s pause—
There’s no stopping award-winning teen filmmaker Joseph Procopio, who is eager to start shooting his first feature film after premiering his 12th short film at Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival in August, 2013 as well as an unexpectedly emotional explanation for his answer: “I love the way he treats his audience in the theater. I like being taken to the movies.” Spielberg certainly takes his audiences to the movies—and so does Procopio. This year’s Sundae, Procopio’s interesting take on a love story, is a “universal story of people being with their true love and not even noticing it.” The inspiration behind the story? Procopio has to keep his “secrets,” he says, but “I like including my personal opinions in every film…I’m the writer, so this allows me to create my own experiences through the film.”

In addition to his supportive family, Procopio says he is particularly grateful to RIIFF for helping his career really take off. He describes RIIFF as being the “springboard” for his career, especially within the U.S. The relationship between RIIFF and Procopio began in 2004 when RIIFF screened his first film, Nine Times Eight, and audiences were introduced to the incredible nine-year-old filmmaker. “RIIFF has been so supportive over the years” he says. “It opened up 90% of the doors to places where my films ended up screening.” Nine years later, his films are being shot with dozens of professional crew, he holds more than 50 international awards and has screened at more than 170 festivals worldwide. But to him, it feels like no time has gone by since that first RIIFF award.
“We look forward to the day—likely not too far off—when we can premiere one of Joseph’s feature film’s at RIIFF.” says RIIFF Executive Director George T. Marshall, who presented Procopio with his first award ten years ago. Marshall has been following Procopio’s career since that first short film in 2004 and cannot wait for the world to see the feature films he will make in the near future. “I truly believe that Joseph is a major talent. He is an amazing director and accomplished storyteller. Joseph Procopio is a name I suspect we will all come to know and whose work will be anticipated.”

While he has an impressive resume, Procopio says he has certainly encountered challenges in his 19 years. Film has not only helped him share his emotions, but has also helped him discover who he is as a person in these formative years. His filmmaking success has “drastically affected” his ability to lead a normal teenage life, he admits. “I was the person who no one understood. People were intimidated by me when I was young. I was bullied. I was able to find myself through my film work, but I think people were intimidated and so they bullied me. People matured over time, and it’s better now…” But, he says, his parents have always been the strongest positive force behind his work.

What’s next for a kid who has, undeniably, mastered short films? It’s feature film time. “The next step is to break the feature road block. I want to have the feature script completed next year, and begin shooting in the summer when I’m 19.” And don’t forget the other short film he wants to fit in during that time, too.

Alfred Thomas Catalfo’s screenplay Betrayed was chosen out of a record 367 submissions from around the world. Betrayed revolves around a small-town newspaper editor who answers the door in the middle of the night to find a disheveled man who claims to be his older brother—an Air Force pilot shot down over North Vietnam in 1972 and reported Missing In Action. His joy at reuniting with his brother quickly turns to terror when shadowy assassins begin pursuing them. As they embark on a dangerous mission to reveal the truth, his faith in the man’s claims threatens to tear his family apart. Catalfo, of Dover, NH, is a screenwriter, producer, director, actor, and attorney. He has received numerous awards for his films and screenplays, and his most recent film, Rocketship, a 15-minute drama about two unlikely people working together to transform a vacuum cleaner into a rocketship, is an official selection for RIIFF 2013 and won the Jury Award for NH Film of the Year at the New Hampshire Film Festival. Screenplay Competition
Rachel Smith’s winning screenplay for “Fix You Up” tells the story of Rory, a workaholic transplant surgeon who cares more about the organs she operates on than the people they belong to. When she breaks her wrist and is out of work, she meets Grace, a spirited musician, who forces Rory to question her choices in life and love.
The Spotlight on RI Screenplay Competition was developed in 2011/2 to invite screenwriters around the world to submit original screenplays set in Rhode Island that feature the state’s unique geography and characteristics as important aspects of the film. For her winning script, Smith has received five free pitches to Hollywood studios and producers on VirtualPitchfest.com and a copy of Final Draft 8 screenwriting software as well as receive an all-access RIIFF pass for 2013, including the ScriptBiz Screenwriters Workshop.
Spotlight: Screenplay Competition Winners
Rachel Smith is a native Rhode Islander who was born in Providence and raised in Hope. She has a love for the Atlantic Ocean, local brew, fresh seafood, and storytelling. She wrote her first play when she was seven and went on to graduate from the Honors Program and the University of Rhode Island with majors in creative writing and film studies. She left New England to study screenwriting at London Film School, where “Fix You Up” was developed.

Marlyn Mason will celebrate her 73rd birthday on August 7th, 2013, “But that’s nothing!” she says. “My director, Ralph Senensky, is 90!” Mason brought veteran TV director Ralph Senensky, 90, out of retirement three years ago to direct her 2013 short film, “The Right Regrets.” Mason’s extensive career in show business began when she was just five years old, and includes a leading role alongside Elvis Presley in the 1969 hit “The Trouble with Girls.” While Mason acted in a number of films and television series, she did not discover her passion—and talent—for screenwriting until very late in her career. Prior to “Regrets,” Mason wrote, produced and starred in two other award-winning short films: “The Bag” (2010) and “Model Rules” (2008), both of which premiered at RIIFF and will screen prior to the premiere of “Regrets” on August 7th. “The Bag” follows the story of a woman who discovers her mother has been hoarding pills so she could try to commit suicide. In “Model Rules,” Mason plays a woman in her late 60s who works as a nude model for art classes and finds herself drawn to one of the young artists. Senesky came out of a 26-year retirement to direct “The Right Regrets,” written by and starring Mason, because, he says, “I liked the script!” Mason had to re-write the script three times, she says, before Senensky fully approved, and another two and a half years passed before filming was completed, but it was all worth it for her. “I don’t know how I’ve done it…writing, producing. Moving a completed script into production? Learn from the best at the Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival’s 14th Annual ScriptBiz program! At Scriptbiz, emerging screenwriters can hone their skills by interacting with and learning from seasoned industry professionals. This year’s program, entitled “From Page to Screen,” takes screenwriters through the entire screenwriting process, with panel discussions on the ins and outs of writing a script and the business aspects of getting a script into production, as well as a special workshop on “pitching your script.” Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ending with a workshop by Canadian director, Patricia Chica. Hosted by William J. Torgerson, this year’s ScriptBiz panelists include Michael Altman, Rachel Smith, Andrew Lund, Alfred Thomas Catalfo, GiGi New, and Nick Sandler.
Films by and for kids are showcased in this special Red Carpet Premiere program at The Vets. Now completing its 15th year, our annual KidsEye Summer Filmmaking Camp teaches youngsters ages 8-17 the basics of film production, writing, and direction. In 2013, forty three (43) youngsters took part on the camp, which is held on the beautiful grounds at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston. The culmination of their work premieres today for their family and friends. For us at Flickers, our filmmakers are always our stars, so help us salute these youngsters who will be part of the future of cinema!

She began a life-long love affair with film and literature in her hometown of Holland, Pennsylvania, where from an early age she wrote her own stories and created short films (mostly spinoffs of Harry Potter) with her friends When other eight-year-olds were watching The Rugrats, Cait could be found curled up on a couch absorbed in an Alfred Hitchcock marathon, who to this day remains her greatest artistic influence. In her Creative Writing studies at Brown, Cait focuses primarily on fiction and screenwriting and currently serves on the executive board of Brown University Motion Pictures (formerly Brown University Student Television), a student film organization that writes, produces, and directs all its own films, as the screenplay coordinator. She writes for several campus publications, including a newly launched satire news TV program, The Bearly News. In the future, Cait aspires to a seat in a dank, dirty television writers’ room hanging out with some loveable, like-minded individuals. In addition to her love of film, Cait is an avid fan of classical music and has played the violin since the age of five. In her free time, she teaches violin and viola professionally to elementary through high school-aged students. She performs with The Brown University Orchestra, which just completed a tour of Ireland this past spring

Graham H. Carter, Youth Jury Coordinator

Graham is a junior at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Carter first attended the University of Tampa in Florida immediately after high school. Having always hoped to live and work in Los Angeles in order to pursue his passion for film, he successfully transferred to USC in the Fall of 2012. Spending his time between Rhode Island and California, he has continued to stay involved with the film community of his home state, currently serving as the Programming Associate of the Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival. He is also the director of RIIFF’s 2013 Youth Film Jury, an assembled group of high school students who attend the Festival as an official judging panel and select winners of the Youth Film Jury Awards. His responsibilities at RIIFF also include sponsorship management and coordinating press releases. At USC, Graham is the Publicity Chair for the LGBT community-outreach organization, OUTreach; a cohost on the syndicated Trojanvision television talk show, Showcase; and an actor and writer on the Trojanvision student-produced teen drama, underGRAD. He also works as a Student Assistant at USC’s Library of Philosophy. His other interests include reading, writing, architecture, psychology, philosophy, and astronomy.
Jessica Miga, Programming Associate & Scriptbiz Coordinator Jessica is a recent graduate of the University of Rhode Island, where she received BA’s in both English and Film Media. While at URI, Jessica received numerous awards for her academic achievements, including the M. Beverly Swan Endowment and a prestigious Academic Excellence Award. Since she was a child, Jessica has had an enduring passion for writing; currently, she is hard at work on a feature-length screenplay and a young adult novel, among other projects. Jessica’s year-long internship with Barrow Street Inc., a nonprofit poetry press, has further inspired her to pursue a career in the publishing industry. These factors combined have led Jessica to Emerson College, where she will begin her master’s degree in Publishing and Writing this fall. Together, Jessica and Brett Treacy designed this year’s Official RIIFF Program Guide.
Nicholas Belt, Development Associate Nicholas Belt is a graduate from the University of Rhode Island holding a BA in economics. As a trained musician, Nick combines both his passion for film and music by composing scores and commercials.
Nick is a junior at Roger Williams University and is the first Film major at the school, he also minors in Latin American History and Business. Nick also started and runs the Film Production Club on campus which is an organization dedicated to creating short films. Additionally Nick works for the non-profit organization called FIMRC which is the Foundation of International Medical Relief of Children which is dedicated to providing pediatric and maternal care to people in developing countries. Nick is currently working on a documentary for the organization that encompasses all of their sites across the world and shows the work they do. He also interns at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and for the organization’s Kid’s Eye Camp teaching children how to produce short films. Nick is an aspiring film maker and has a passion for the medium he continues to work hard in field for hopes of one day being one of the world’s greatest story tellers.
Ohad Amram, Programming Assistant Ohad is rising senior at Hofstra University. Ohad is majoring in Film Studies & Production, and double minoring Journalism and English. Having been a staff writer for the Hofstra Chronicle since his enrollment at Hofstra, he has earned the position of “senior writer,” for this upcoming school year. At the Hofstra Chronicle, Ohad writes for the Arts & Entertainment section where he utilizes his knowledge and interest on film. While a junior at Hofstra, Ohad interned at Tribeca Film in New York City. There he worked in distribution. As a cinephile and aspiring screenwriter, Ohad continues to immerse himself in any opportunity pertaining to film. Ohad’s interest in film lie primarily in script analysis and film studies, however he has thoroughly enjoyed the few production courses he’s taken. Upon graduating from Hofstra, Ohad anticipates on graduate school for screenwriting.

Steven s going into his fourth year as a major in Creative Writing at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. He was born and raised in Bergen County, New Jersey, specifically the town of River Vale—a small suburb of New York City. He discovered his love for film and literature somewhere around the middle of his college career, sparking an unforeseen shift to the arts, following in the footsteps of his older brother—a jazz musician. An aspiring fiction writer, screenwriter, or art promoter in general, Steven enjoys literature, film, sports, traveling and music in his free time. Playing his drum kit in his basement in New Jersey, reading under the sun, and watching television and movies are his favorite ways to spend time. He is thrilled to be spending his summer living among the natural beauty in the nautical, historic town of Bristol, as well as promoting independent film with the Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival in the urban hub of Providence.

Xuan who also goes by Susan, is a current junior at Roger Williams University. Born and raised in Dalat, Vietnam, she first learned about filmmaking and its language, and also found her chance to study abroad in the United States while attending high school at APU International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As a potential Finance major, Xuan is also taking classes of a Film Studies minor in order to pursue a career in both fields. As Treasurer of RWU Film Production Club and a member of the Curation and Festival Production Class, Xuan wants to make use of her understanding, her love in filmmaking, and her experience growing up being exposed to both Western and Eastern movies to help internationalize the opportunities for filmmakers to share their products.

OSCAR NIGHT® AMERICA (February 2014) Providence Oscar Night® America is one of only 49 official parties sanctioned by the Academy to host an official Oscar® telecast viewing party on Oscar Night. ROVING EYE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (April 2014) Join us for the 8th annual Roving Eye International Film Festival features, the culmination of intensive work done by Roger Williams Film Minor students for their senior course. KidsEye™ is a fun yet intensive five-day filmmaking camp for children ages 8-17 presented by FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival™. FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival is calling for Screenplay Entries for its 17th annual competition. The Festival is accepting screenplays in all genres. Screenplays must have been written after 2011. Screenplays will be judged on creativity, innovation, vision, originality and the use of language. The key element is that of communication and how it complements and is transformed by the language of film. The Grand Prize winner will become a central focus during ScriptBiz™ the screenplay pitch forum held during the Festival. The Grand Prize winner will also receive prizes valued at over $10,000. This includes travel, up to four nights accommodations, Final Draft software and screenplay promotions. Since the contest winners are announced following the main Festival, the Grand Prize winner’s work will be a focal point for RIIFF 2015 with the official trophy presented at the Festival’s Opening Night Celebration. RIIFF YOUTH JURY (August 2014) The Flickers Youth Film Jury Program offers local high school students the unique opportunity to participate directly in an internationally recognized, film festival, as well as aid in the festival’s longstanding commitment to community outreach and education. The program is normally composed of a group of 20-30 students, who attend multiple screenings during the Festival, Q&A’s, and festival events. Their goal is to deliberate, and choose a Best Feature, Best Documentary, and Best Short to receive the Youth Film Jury award.
