Dedication: Ron Tippe It is with heavy hearts that the Rhode Island International Film Festival learns of the passing of our former Producing Director, Ron Tippe. Ron was a huge part to the development and growth of this festival and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
RHODE ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL | DEDICATION
He was able to touch so many lives both through his extensive and impressive career, and in his personal life.
6
Ron Tippe has worked in the entertainment business for the last 36 years. In that period, he has directed 52 stage plays, 100 commercials and dozens of education and business related films. In addition he has spent the last 15 years as a Feature Animation Producer for DreamWorks Animation (SHREK – Pre-Production), WB Feature Animation (SPACE JAM), George Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic (FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN – Pre-Production), Walt Disney Feature Animation (RUNAWAY BRAIN – Oscar nominated short), IDT Feature Animation (EVERYONE’S HERO) and most recently, Imagi Entertainment’s (GATCHAMAN – Pre-Production). In addition, he managed the Paris, France Animation studio for Walt Disney Animation. Ron has also produced record albums in addition to being an accomplished musician and the owner of QT Music (ASCAP) and Barn Boy Music (ASCAP) publishing companies. In 2008, Ron branched out and became a Certified Creative Empowerment Coach specializing in creativity and personal biography. An alumnus of Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, (BA Theatre) and the University of Illinois (MA Theatre), he was a Visiting Professor of Communications in 2008 where he helped co-produce and create the Roving Eye Film Festival with George Marshall. Ron recently taught at Emerson College in Boston. He was married to Hollywood Costume Designer, Molly Maginnis. They have two children, Annie and Sam Tippe. On behalf of RIIFF, we will all miss Ron dearly, but will never forget him.
Flickers held the state’s first International Film Festival in Newport in 1983, which laid the foundation for today’s Rhode Island International Film Festival. During its first five years exhibiting film, Flickers screened more than 475 titles, of which many were state and regional premieres. Some examples that demonstrate the breadth of films exhibited include “Amadeus,” “Flight of the Eagle,” “The Man from Snowy River,” “Parting Glances,” Truffaut’s “Confidentially Yours,” Bergman’s “Fanny & Alexander,” Fassbinder’s “Querelle,” Franco Zeffirelli’s lush “La Traviata,” Bertolucci’s uncut “1900,” the premiere of the independent film “Coaster,” the restored print of Gloria Swanson’s epic “Queen Kelly,” Fellini’s “And the Ship Sails On,” and “My Beautiful Laundrette.” The society sponsored specialized film series, lectures, and forums including one at the screening of “Man of Iron,” which featured Cheslaw Kyanka, founder of the Polish Solidarity Union. The Society also presented lectures for colleges and organizations on topics from Italian Neo-Realism to film programming. It even organized travel programs to study international media centers in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, and Athens. Over the past 33 years, Flickers has changed directions, taken detours, and charted new routes. The organization has been impacted by the hard work, vision, and commitment of so many people that it would be wrong to personally take credit for where we are today. No one person is responsible for the success of what was originally envisioned as a way to meet people, make friends, and share a common love of film. Some of these people have actually been with us for this quarter century. Others have drifted in and out, some have moved on, but all have been touched in some way by this organization. Today, programming efforts cover a broad range of areas -from arts to humanities to social services to production to educational outreach -multiple linkages and numerous collaborations have been established. Flickers has evolved with the changes, needs, and demands of the community it serves. It has never lost sight of its mission, and continues its quest to create inventive and cutting-edge programming. It has been an amazing adventure and one that was completely unforeseen at its beginning. This year’s dedication is to all the people who created Flickers and sustained it over the past 33 years. It’s a long, long list of wonderful people. All are linked by a passion and commitment you cannot find anywhere else: the love of film that served as Flickers’ founding inspiration. My sincere thanks!
George T. Marshall Executive Director
RHODE ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL | LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Letter from the Director
It was around 1979 that I started thinking about creating a small film society whose sole purpose was to discover and screen classic, foreign, and cutting edge film. I had picked up a book entitled “How to Organize and Run a Film Society,” and I played with the idea over the next several years. In 1981, I formalized my ideas and created “Flickers—The Newport Film Society.” It was very much a “Field of Dreams” experience: I built it and people came. Our first screening took place at the then-named Van Alen Casino Theatre in Newport. The screening was in January 1983. The film was Fellini’s “Amarcord.” One hundred seventy five people showed up and from there, Flickers was launched.

July 18, 2014 Theodore Bikel
Dear Theo, I am very pleased to inform you that upon the recommendation of the Board of the Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF), you have both been nominated to receive our Lifetime Achievement Award. As the Festival’s most prestigious award, the Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual who, throughout his or her career, has demonstrated an outstanding devotion to the cinematic arts. We would love to include you in this year’s festivities, that includes the North American Premier of "Journey 4 Artists." The Rhode Island International Film Festival discovers and empowers maverick filmmakers and screenwriters from across the globe. Held in Providence and locations throughout the state of Rhode Island, the Academy Awardqualifying RIIFF has risen to the top ranks among film festivals and prides itself on being New England’s largest, most prestigious film festival. RIIFF is an extravaganza of special events, film screenings, VIP guests, industry seminars, celebrations, and an awards ceremony. The festival's stellar programming, industry ties, and loyal audiences have made RIIFF a strategic and desirable platform for film premieres. Hundreds of independent filmmakers from around the world converge on the state's capital city making for an exciting and dynamic event. This summer’s festival is scheduled for August 5-10th. Every year, we recognize outstanding directors, actors, producers, and film talent for their contributions to the art of filmmaking. Previous award winners and celebrities in attendance include actor Julie Andrews, actor Patricia Neal, director Blake Edwards, actor Kim Chan, actor Cicely Tyson, director Rosa Von Praunheim, director Michael Corrente, founder of the Newport Jazz Festival Elaine Lorillard, actor Steve Buscemi, director Peter Farrelly, actor Seymour Cassell, actor Richard Jenkins, and actor Ernest Borgnine. Throughout your respective career as an actor, folk singer, musician, composer and activist, you have left an incredible mark on the world. Your diverse and countless cinematic roles have left an iconic footprint in American film history. From your debut performance in "The African Queen" (1951) to your Oscar Nominating performance as the Southern Sheriff in "The Defiant Ones" (1958), your great talent has brought to life timeless characters and music that will stay with us for generations to come. With the creation of the role Baron Von Trapp in the original Broadway Production of "The Sound of Music" (1959), you captured the imaginations of millions. Your rendition of Tevye in the Broadway Production of "Fiddler on the Roof" will always be remembered and emulated in the year's to come. Your great talent was again manifested with helping to create the Newport Folk Festival, one the longest running and most prestigious music festivals in the world. The significance of your career in the arts has left a profound impact on the worlds of film, music and theater, and we recognize all that you have done to advocate and discover new and talented artists. The Rhode Island International Film Festival upholds a similar mission of discovering the new voices of independent film, and because of our affinity to you, we would be delighted and honored if you could be in attendance as we celebrate our 18th festival to accept our bestowment of the Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival's (RIIFF) Lifetime Achievement Award. We congratulate you on your remarkable career and we fully understand that you will not be able to receive this award on Sunday, August 10 in person. Spotlight: “Journey 4 Artists”Michele Noble
RHODE ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL | SPOTLIGHT
RIIFF: How did you get started in film? What sparked your interest in it? Michele Noble: I always wanted to direct. i think the first time was when I saw Gone With the Wind when I was seven or eight in a movie theater with my dad. I went to USC Film School, and then while I was there I directed and produced documentaries for ABC on teenage alcoholism and aging and all these different things. I figured, to be a director I wanted to work as an assistant director first so I would know how to run everything, all the shots that you need and also how to put it all together.
16
RIIFF: How did you first meet with Theo Bikel? MN: I met Theo on a movie where he was an actor and I was assistant director. One of my jobs was greeting him, signing him in, and telling him what his day would be. We had a lot in common and we both loved reading and things so we started talking. And he asked me, “What do you believe in?” And I said “Well, a film.” And he said “No what do you really believe in?” And then he took part in my first protest for anti-apartheid. It got me arrested and he got arrested and that became our bonding moment of how we could be these artist-activists. He sort of taught me that. And he encouraged me to write and direct and produce and to look at the world and to be a part of it, to be active in politics and reform. RIIFF: So, you met Theo years ago and then decided to do this documentary based on the ideas you just mentioned? MN: I met Theo many many years ago and we’ve done several things together and then I was throwing a birthday party for him and he loves to always play music at the end of the evening; that’s his tradition. So for this birthday party, Tamara Brooks decided to surprise him with Merima and Shura to play with him at the end of this party. So the four of them were playing in my living room and I was looking at it and saying “This is my movie!” So that’s where I got the idea for the movie.
RIIFF: Theo will be honored at our Festival. How does that make you feel to see your friend being honored? MN: That was a really beautiful thing. I love Theo. I am inspired by him everyday and I think he’s given the world a great contribution in terms of art and peace. As an artist, as an activist, and as a human being he has given the world a great contribution in regards to art and peace. The fact that the Festival is honoring him is incredible and it’s great because I think when you have a mentor where you receive so much from them and to have a project where that mentor is also recognized is incredible. I feel that in some way I got to give back to him because the festival is recognizing both of us. RIIFF: Do you have anything else to add? MN: I think what I’d like people to know the courage of the four artists to be so vulnerable and intimate with their artistry both as musicians and people because they are also telling their personal stories. I thank them for their courage and honesty and I think that’s what makes the documentary so unique.
RHODE ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL | SPOTLIGHT
RIIFF: What do you hope people will take away from the film after seeing it? MN: My hope is that they will be entertained by the music and appreciate the artists and their stories. I think the takeaway for me is that they will understand through art, peace and understanding can happen. And that art and music in particular are powerful tools to educate people and to wipe away the stereotypes that we have in terms of cultures and other religions and the possibility of a tomorrow where we can be united and not divided.

Spotlight: “Muted”- Rachel Goldberg
20
Missing. We all know the feeling of losing something important to us. The car keys when we’re running late. The cellphone we can’t live without. That matching diamond earring that always seems to escape us. We’ve all felt the frustration of searching. We’ve checked and doubled checked every room, turning the couch inside-out with hopes that it could be found between the cracks. We know the relief of finding these things, and the disappointment of losing them for good. But the thing about lost objects is that no matter how sentimental they seem, they’re still just objects. The short film “Muted,” directed by Rachel Goldberg, tells the story of a missing person, and the heartbreak of losing someone that cannot be replaced: a daughter, a sister and a friend. “Muted” puts viewers in the living room of a mother doing everything she can to find her daughter, and gives a poignant look at the discrimination that still exists in news coverage today. Missing white woman syndrome (MWWS) is a list of factors that make a missing child more newsworthy than others. These characteristics include white skin color, female, derived from a middle upper class family, and blonde features. RACHEL (Director): When I first read the log line, I asked if it was based on a true story, and they said, unfortunately it’s based on lots of true stories. I thought this can’t be true anymore though, this must be from 10-15 years ago. I had no idea that this phenomenon still existed. I was shocked that there was any sort of media discrepancy. What I found out is that unfortunately it’s happening right now. I made the decision that we absolutely have to tell this story. RACHEL: It is such an honor to be at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. It’s one of the best fests I have ever attended. Everyone involved is amazing. We are so honored to be a part of it. And just being at a fest like this is a great way to get the message out there. “Muted” will be shown on August 8th at 7:00pm at The Vets.
Spotlight: “Sandrine”Nicolas Greinacher
His LGBT short film, SANDRINE, takes the audience inside the mind of a young woman, who after being kissed by another woman, struggles with her feelings and thoughts about the situation. The film attests to the feelings of confusion and isolation that every young adult experiences at some point, and gives hope to those young people that they are, in fact, far from being alone. NICOLAS (Director): With SANDRINE, the thing is, I’ve always wanted to do an LGBT film, because I am gay myself and I’ve always had lots of ideas and I’ve watched a lot of films. RIIFF: Is your recent film, Sandrine, rooted in personal experience at all? NICOLAS: I guess subconsciously there are certain factors that made me write the story. The thing behind SANDRINE is that when you are a teenager in that kind of situation you often feel alone with your thoughts and that nobody else understands how you really feel and that’s common when people have their coming out phase. That’s basically Sandrine’s reaction after the initial kiss. She can’t handle it and walks out into the city. RIIFF: What else is in the works for you? What’s next? NICOLAS: My feeling is that SANDRINE will get pretty far in the festival circuit because there are a lot of LGBT film festivals around the world. I think it’s all just starting and I think there is a lot more to come. One point in the future is to focus on the marketing of SANDRINE and I hope that I can attend as many of the festivals as possible. And my new project is actually doing a short documentary because I know a girl in Switzerland, when she was about 25 years she decided to open an orphanage in Burkina Faso, Africa. She left her whole life behind her because she felt it was right. Production is still in its baby shoes but I think that’s going to be my next film. “Sandrine” will have its World Premiere at the Opening Night Ceremony on August 5th at 7:00pm, at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

Nicolas Greinacher, a filmmaker from Switzerland, is no stranger to the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Nicolas first attended the Festival last year after his short film, FORGIVEN IS NOT FORGOTTEN, was accepted for screening. Now, with a new film to be featured in the LGBT film category, Nicolas is ecstatic about coming back to the Festival and enjoying the warm family atmosphere that he had been surrounded by last year.
