To Reduce Plastic Waste

Sustainability is a journey and it can be difficult to find genuine companies that are truly trying to reduce plastic waste. It can also be pretty expensive when you’re just starting out, but it will be worth it in the long run because sustainable options are reusable, and last longer, so you won’t have to spend money replacing items. I’ve been trying to find the best products for the past few years now and here is my list of favorites!

Refillable Deodorant Each year, the deodorant industry produces over 15 million pounds of plastic waste. An easy solution is to use deodorants that have biodegradable packaging or refillable containers. The one that I am currently using is Myro, a deodorant that comes with a refillable, easy to clean container and plant-based deodorant that comes in recyclable packaging, and is considered plastic neutral, meaning that any plastic that is produced, an equal amount is recycled back into their system.

Straws & Cups It’s estimated that about 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute beaches around the world. Reusable straws are light and easy to carry around in your bag! However, just avoiding plastic straws alone is not enough. Each year, about 25 billion single-use coffee cups end up in landfills. If you are going out to get coffee, bring your reusable cup with you, along with the straws, or stick to making your drink at home!

Safety Razor Every year, over 2 billion plastic razors end up in landfills. A very simple substitute to plastic razors is an all metal, safety razor! It’s just as easy to use, and many of the companies that sell it ensure the packaging for both the razor and the refillable blades are completely plastic free. The brand that I use is EcoRoots!

Biodegradable Phone Case Each year, about 1.5 billion phone cases are thrown away. This is an unnecessary use of plastic when there are biodegradable options that function just as well in terms of protecting your phone, and coming in different colors and styles. The brand that I use is Pela!

Reusable Utensils In the United States alone, there are about 40 billion plastic utensils that are wasted per year. Just like reusable straws, these are a very easy thing to carry in a bag with you when you are out and know you will be getting food that might only have plastic as an option for utensils. The set I have is from Anthropology and includes a fork, spoon, and knife that all attach together for easy portability and are made from recycled materials.

Soap Bars Over 1 billion plastic bottles of body wash alone end up in landfills each year. Using soap bars that come in biodegradable packaging is a much more sustainable option, and there are plenty of brands to choose from. You can purchase them in conditioner, shampoo, body wash and they are most often made with all natural ingredients! They last just as long and are a great alternative. The brand I use is Habitat Botanicals!
