At Flint Hill School, we celebrate students’ individuality and empower them to achieve any goal they can imagine. Wherever students find inspiration, however they choose to express themselves and display their talents and whatever brings them fulfillment, balance and joy—these are the things we value at Flint Hill School. Flint Hill students have many natural gifts and are encouraged to explore them all. The child who loves robots learns to also love books. The history buff discovers an aptitude for computer programming she never knew she had. The soccer star thrives as a musician. Our students celebrate the talents and successes of their peers as they challenge and cheer each other on—in the classroom, on our courts and fields, on stage and in the studio. They approach learning with great energy and genuine enthusiasm. Flint Hill students are free to dive deeply, achieve in multiple dimensions and step into the spotlight. We believe that learning in this environment provides the foundation for a rounded, happy and self-directed life. Fostering that sense of balance between self and others, left brain and right, and comfort and risk helps us develop graduates who are curious, compassionate and utterly fearless.

At Flint Hill, students benefit from an exceptional degree of balance and opportunity …
Hopes, dreams, determination and success At the beginning of the school year, Lower School parents discuss their hopes and dreams for their children with Flint Hill teachers. This tradition symbolizes the spirit of Flint Hill School and embodies the values that unite our three divisions, which include a commitment to celebrate the passions, talents, backgrounds and ambitions of our students and to foster close, open relationships within our community. While Flint Hill School is a community of individuals, we are joined by common ideals and a belief that an excellent education—one that treats children as the complex, multifaceted people they are—is of central importance to a life well lived.
2
The impressive quality and array of opportunities available at Flint Hill are a major draw for prospective students and their families. A wide-ranging, rigorous academic curriculum, strong arts and athletics programs, community service, clubs and class trips all play an integral role in a Flint Hill education. From the Lower School Day of Play to the Middle School dance teams to the Upper School senior project, the depth and breadth of opportunities we offer contribute significantly to our students’ growth, skill development and happiness. We believe that a truly transformative education encompasses both academic achievement and a variety of extracurricular endeavors. Our program not only meets but exceeds the high standards that are expected of an independent TK-12 school in the intellectually vibrant Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area. Teachers engage students deeply and help them develop into well-rounded, highly capable young adults with a strong sense of who they are and what they wish to become.
… a special blend of innovation and tradition … … learning within a community that cares … Kind. Caring. Helpful. Intelligent. Passionate. These are words Flint Hill School students commonly use to describe their teachers. And it’s no wonder: In a school where teachers are treated with respect and given the freedom to infuse their interests and ingenuity into their classrooms, the atmosphere is one of excitement, wonder and joy. Flint Hill educators not only teach; they also serve as mentors, role models, champions and friends. Older students frequently visit their favorite Lower School teachers, and alumni return to campus to catch up with their instructors long after they graduate. Some of the most important relationships of our students’ lives are often formed at Flint Hill; their peers have a major influence on the kind of student—and person—they become. Flint Hill students are immensely curious about the world and inspire each other with their intelligence, ambition and courage. They care about performing well and hold each other to high academic, social and moral standards. They place the right kind of pressure on each other—encouraging classmates to share their ideas, explore their interests, set ambitious goals and work hard to achieve them.
Flint Hill isn’t just an early adopter of new technologies and teaching methods; we lead the way with state-of-the-art tools and innovative approaches. Our aim is to deliver an education that ensures students build the knowledge, capacities and experiences that prepare them to enter the next phase of their development, whether moving into the Middle or Upper School or entering college. Students enjoy a traditional liberal arts experience that instills the broad skillset and strong foundations—in areas such as critical thinking, teamwork and effective communication—that are required to successfully navigate today’s complex, increasingly connected world. Students learn from dedicated teachers who bring a combination of new and proven methods to the classroom. Our teachers are truly exceptional; they stay abreast of the latest research, collaborate with colleagues to keep assignments fresh and multidimensional, provide a great deal of individual attention and engage students with different learning styles. We support our faculty members’ ongoing growth and improvement by providing extensive professional development opportunities and supporting their innovative ideas.
… and a school that takes pride in imparting strong ethics and values. Before they graduate and join the ranks of alumni studying, working and living in every corner of the world, our students build the foundations to be ethical leaders, trustworthy friends and compassionate citizens. At Flint Hill, teaching strong values is of equal importance to building knowledge and academic skills. From the first day they set foot on campus, students are encouraged to appreciate their unique gifts and see themselves as part of a greater whole. Our youngest students quickly learn the benefits of sharing and working together with peers and discover how their actions impact others. Older students and alumni exemplify the true definition of success: becoming people who treat themselves and others with respect. Flint Hill families are immensely proud not only of their students’ accomplishments, but also of the people they become—confident, ethical, caring young adults who are well prepared for college and eager to build impactful careers and lead meaningful lives. When graduation arrives, parents see in their children the embodiment of the hopes and dreams they expressed when the Flint Hill journey began. 3
Diverse and Inclusive The Flint Hill community encompasses students, families, faculty members and staff from a broad range of family structures, countries of origin, religious traditions and racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Embracing and valuing the diversity of our community is vital to Flint Hill’s mission and an essential element of our overall educational excellence. Flint Hill strives to create an environment where individuals are accepted and celebrated for who they are and where commonalities and differences are appreciated and valued equally. Every individual within our community accepts a responsibility to recognize and honor the dignity of others. As a result, students develop a pervasive sense of understanding and empathy that prepares them to be thoughtful and active citizens of the world.

AT THE FOREFRONT OF INNOVATION:
AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE:
Technology at Flint Hill
Flint Hill’s Learning Center
Technology has rapidly expanded the world of educational possibilities. Thanks to the vast stores of information at their fingertips, today’s students can do incredible things— from using Google Earth to visit the Colosseum while studying ancient history to virtually exploring the Metropolitan Museum of Art during an art class. Flint Hill not only embraces the effective, thoughtful and productive use of technology in and out of class, but is also one of a select few Apple Distinguished independent schools in the country. As one of the first schools to implement a TK-12, 1:1 technology program, we provide all students with an iPad or MacBook Air—tools that become indispensable over the course of their Flint Hill experience.
Flint Hill’s commitment to meeting students where they are runs deep. Attention and sensitivity to the different ways children learn are central to the school’s philosophy; every student benefits from our commitment to excellence in teaching and our personalized approach to learning. For students who need additional support, the Learning Center can help transform what could be a frustrating educational experience into one in which they excel.
Keeping up with today’s rapid pace of change, particularly in the realm of technology, is imperative if we are to prepare students for the challenges they will face in college and their careers. What’s more, we strongly embrace the expanded opportunities for creativity, in-depth analysis and collaboration that technology affords today’s educators and learners.
With an outstanding regional and national reputation and an impressive history of success, our Learning Center offers an outstanding program of services that integrates seamlessly with Flint Hill’s overall curriculum. The Center’s expert specialists work closely with students at all grade levels who have demonstrated needs. They empower students to better understand—and benefit from—their personal strengths and help them improve their organizational and time management skills, while also working with their teachers to develop approaches that reflect their individual needs.
From a young age, Flint Hill students learn to work effectively and productively with computers, identify valid sources of online information and use software applications in classes ranging from science and English to art. They develop a level of competency that helps them move adeptly in the digital world and positions them to adapt quickly and effectively to the next wave of innovation. 6

The Husky Spirit The Husky is more than just Flint Hill’s mascot: It is a symbol of the values that enrich and strengthen our community. At Flint Hill, students are encouraged to help each other, be loyal to one another and pull together as one. The husky provides an apt metaphor for a school deeply committed to promoting and celebrating collaboration. That metaphor reflects the driving spirit that inspires our sports teams to excel, motivates every student to achieve his or her potential and enables Flint Hill to thrive. In a sense, everyone in our community is a husky—unique individuals joined by clear goals, a carefully chosen path, bonds that motivate and energize and a shared commitment to learn from—and delight in—our collective journey.

Global Day of Play During the Global Day of Play, students work collaboratively to invent, design and build structures out of basic materials. They assume roles that match their interests and abilities— encouraging each other’s creativity, innovation and ingenuity—while developing teamwork skills and basic technical concepts that serve them in future academic pursuits. This combination of skills development, cooperation, exuberance and curiosity is par for the course at Flint Hill, where intellectual enrichment, personal growth and creative expression go hand in hand.
Curiosity and Creation The Lower School gives children the opportunity to engage with diverse subjects through substantive and engaging hands-on activities that reinforce basic skills and concepts. Engaging Minds, Opening Hearts From the earliest years of their education, Flint Hill students participate in their academic success within a learning environment that combines traditional and innovative teaching methods in ways that support their academic, social and emotional development. Each day begins with a morning meeting where students gather to greet one another and their teachers, share stories about important events in their lives, participate in an activity and reflect on a morning message from their teacher
that helps them understand their classwork for the day. Morning meetings sometimes involve the entire Lower School during a gathering called Inspiration, which provides a time for the community to come together in a moment of shared reflection. Morning meetings and Inspiration instill a sense of camaraderie while reinforcing valuable social and interpersonal skills. By learning to listen attentively to their peers and share their thoughts, students become engaged community members from an early age—and better equipped to master basic skills and develop good study habits.
Taking an active role Lower School students showcase their academic progress and share their interests with their parents during Flint Hill’s unique student-involved conferences. In preparation for the conference, students reflect on their accomplishments and recent projects. Using iPads to lead their parents through their work, students learn to take pride in their academic progress, demonstrate their mastery of technology and become comfortable in a leadership role.

The Husky Promise
“Today I promise to do my best to respect myself, others and my world; to be a responsible and honest Husky; and to show compassion to all.” The Husky—Flint Hill’s mascot— reminds us of our shared commitment to hard work, collaboration and loyalty. In the Lower School, students take these ideals and our four core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and compassion to heart, proudly reciting the Husky Promise and applying these important lessons in their daily lives.
Building a Passion for Learning It’s never too early for students to distinguish themselves and pursue subjects that both engage them and impart essential knowledge. To that end, Flint Hill offers enrichment clusters where students work together in mixed-age groups to explore a topic of their choice in depth. These groups give students the opportunity to delve into engaging topics, put academic principles into practice and work together to create substantive and relevant projects. Cluster topics range from genealogy and building with LEGO® bricks to Civil War history and filmmaking.
20
Enrichment clusters represent collaboration at its best. TK through 2nd grade students work together in one set of groups, while students in 3rd and 4th grades collaborate in another. Under the guidance of Flint Hill teachers and outside subject matter experts, students chart a course for exploring their chosen area of study, which may include writing a blog devoted to their topic, creating a presentation for their peers or performing a community service.

Personal growth, lasting connections The changes and challenges students confront during the middle school years are profound. Middle School faculty members and staff are sensitive to the physical, emotional, social and personal transformations that characterize those years. We provide a support system of faculty advisors and peer advisory groups with whom students can share their thoughts and discuss personal and societal issues in a safe setting.
Inspiration and Inclusion During Inspiration, every 8th-grader at Flint Hill School tells their peers and teachers a story. Standing before the 7th- and 8th-grade classes and members of the faculty, each student shares an experience that opened their mind and shaped their perspective, such as overcoming a personal setback or injury or traveling to a developing nation. Continuing a tradition that begins in the Lower School, Inspiration gives students the chance to share their beliefs and values while developing their writing and public speaking skills.

Whether students are building a circuit to power a light bulb, creating their own video game or crafting a musical instrument, Makers provides them with the space and tools to bring their creations to life. This innovative program demonstrates Flint Hill’s emphasis on using hands-on creative projects to reinforce academic concepts and build collaborative and teamwork skills.
Challenges and Choices Our Middle School curriculum develops the skills students need to be successful learners, leaders, professionals and citizens. Guided by dedicated, supportive instructors, they build knowledge across a variety of disciplines while developing broadly applicable skills in communication and creative and critical thinking, as well as the ability to explore, investigate and analyze in greater depth. Students nurture their love of learning, address increasingly challenging assignments and subject matter and receive the preparation they need for success in the Upper School, college and beyond.

As students progress academically, their coursework becomes more rigorous and the classroom more self-directed, and they take greater personal responsibility for their education. The Inner Self and the Outside World At Flint Hill, we believe that the arts reflect a fundamental dimension of what makes us human, and that creative expression is an integral part of a well-rounded education. We approach the arts as a set of essential skills that Middle School students can develop and master, and that will continue to be a part of their lives in years to come. In our robust arts programs, students make connections across disciplines, grasp complex concepts and develop capacities— such as poise, confidence and cultural literacy—that enhance their academic success. Building on the foundation established through the arts programs at our Lower School, the Middle School arts curriculum enables students to make new discoveries about
their abilities and interests, explore a variety of media, learn focus and discipline and experience the joys of creativity and self-expression. In all areas of artistic study—visual arts, chorus, drama, dance, band, orchestra and percussion— students learn directly from active and experienced professional artists. Whether in the studio, in the practice room or on stage, students acquire a new, creative language for making their voice heard. In addition to practical instruction, they gain a better understanding of art history and global artistic perspectives, experiencing firsthand the power of art to break down barriers between communities and cultures.

After meeting with their mentor to develop their plan and submitting a proposal to a faculty committee for approval, students spend 80 hours in the work setting of their choice. Through this experience, they gain valuable skills in setting and meeting goals, learn the importance of self-driven work and explore possible career options. At the completion of their project, students deliver a presentation to a panel of faculty members, reflecting on their experience and sharing what they have learned.

from faculty advisors throughout their Upper School careers. This helps ensure that their resume and transcript accurately reflect their successes and meet the expectations of college admissions offices. Lighting the Lantern At the earliest Iditarod races in Alaska, a lantern was lit and kept burning until the last team of huskies crossed the finish line as a way of honoring the courage and determination of every team—not just the winners. For Flint Hill, the lantern symbolizes the courage and determination our students exhibit as they master the challenges they face and excel as Huskies in their academic, athletic and artistic pursuits. At the beginning of each year, seniors who have been at Flint Hill since kindergarten light a lantern that is kept burning until the last senior completes their requirements for graduation. The lantern sits in the window of the headmaster’s office for all to see—a powerful symbol of the journey we embark upon as a community each August.
