Birds Eye Media, and Flipside Media Group have collaborated in producing this magazine on behalf of Cedar springs Health, Racquet and Sportsclub. We are committed to making this magazine a great success, and have experienced all of the highs and lows side by side. Merging both of our companies to join forces in the publishing world we are so thrilled to introduce to you, our very first edition… Over the course of this issue we have learned what a close knit community you have here. From the minute we stepped through your doors we could tell that this welcoming environment sets itself apart from the intimidating atmospheres of conventional competitive gyms. Having the opportunity to meet your members we realized very quickly that you have all found “families” within the club enjoying each other’s time on and off the courts. We must give many thanks to the contributors of this Spring/Summer issue that added value to the quality of our content. From Kelly Childs of Kind Foods healthy and fresh recipes, Downtown Burlington’s trendsetting fashions: Mirella’s Ladies Boutique, Organza Lines, Scrivener’s Men’s Apparel, & Jeff’s Guy Shop. Many thanks to all Cedar Springs department heads for their sporting tips and industry news. A Letter From George
How lucky I am to be involved in the health and fitness industry London Olympics are coming this summer. International athletes have trained and trained for years to qualify to represent their individual countries. The discipline required is supported by coaches, therapists, doctors and trainers. The Olympics are exciting from the Opening Ceremonies and lighting of the Olympic Flame to the final days including the closing ceremonies. These athletes did not decide to hit the international stage as a New Year’s resolution. For years everything they eat, each training session and competition is designed to have them be at peak performance in London summer 2012. As individuals, we are all making plans for our own summer of health and fitness. There may not be the intensity of the Olympics or the support of coaching. We may be the coaches or mentors or there to cheer for friends and family. Statistics show if we lead an active lifestyle we can expect to live longer. We have to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. The key components are a good balance of exercise, nutrition and rest. We may bike 100 clicks on a weekend or ride the bike paths through Burlington. Summer activities include sailing, golf and chasing grandchildren in the pool. Organized races from Dragon Boats to triathlons have us training and trying to find time in our busy schedules to be healthy and strong. Quality of life is a balance that we are trying to show in this issue. There are two articles about Cancer. Our own Cedar Springs Pilates instructor is a survivor. The 2nd article is from the fitness director and about her experience training the out patients at the Carpenter Hospice here in Burlington on a pilot project. Statistics show if we are active we will be healthier. My summer will involve trips with friends to participate in bike rides and triathlon events. As a man I have a need for competition. It gives me goals and a reason to train. The reward is celebrating a successful finish with friends and reliving the experience through pictures. Enjoy our first issue of Cedar Springs Health. We have included tips from our pros on how to improve your game and advice for the summer kitchen. A few of our members have shared stories of their personal successes. Check out some of the new equipment and clothing on the market available at our pro shop. Have a safe summer and stay active. If you have not reached the quality of life you desire I hope we can motivate you to get started before the torch is lit this summer in London.

Is “Hormone-Free” Milk Really Healthy? Type 1 Diabetes, cancer, ADHD, Asthma, and nearly all allergies and auto-immune diseases, are all directly linked to the consumption of dairy products. Researchers, Scientists and Doctors have discovered that childhood diseases and conditions of the Western World can be prevented, slowed down and even reversed on a whole food, plant-based diet. According to Dr. T. Colin Campbell, in his book The China Study, forty years of research reveals the root cause of Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes in the high levels of animal protein consumption in the American Diet, as found in the milk protein, casein. Casein, a harmful protein found in cow’s milk has been confirmed to cause Type 1 Diabetes in children when fed to them at an early age. Fooling ourselves to milk that is organic or won’t make a difference the GMO bovine is virtually the same occurring growth And hormones are proteins are what really New England Journal 31, 1992- right there, up! It says that the proteins, bovine serum a trigger for insulinmellitus. Dr. Spock, copies of his book on only other book to sell history is the bible), “no human, no child, cow’s milk”. It’s clearly government’s part to
think that drinking “hormone-free” either, because growth hormone as the naturally hormone in cows. only part of it. The hurt us too. In the of Medicine, July you can look it exposure to bovine lactobumin, is dependent diabetes who sold 75 million child care (the more than his in clearly stated that, no adult needs a deception on the promote it.
There is no such thing as hormone-free milk. The healthiest milk from the healthiest cow is naturally loaded with lactoferrins, immunoglobulins, steroid, and protein growth hormones and not to mention, injected with casomorphins (to get us really hooked). Does organic human breast milk sound like a delicious drink for an adult human? Instinctively, most people know that there are substances in breast milk that are not intended for their adult bodies. Same goes for pig’s milk and dog’s milk and the same goes for cow’s milk. But in an effort to provide their children with healthy foods, mothers and fathers search out products that are advertised to be organic or “hormone free”, thereby rendering the product safe. Such marketing is deceptive. When drinking body fluids from animals, or eating their flesh, you ingest their naturally occurring hormones and proteins. This in turn leads to cancer growth, diabetes, obesity, hormonal problems, teenage acne, allergies, asthma, ADHD, autism and a host of other lifelong problems. I recommend readers to take a 30 day no-dairy test. This would be optimal but seven days is also plenty if you’re aware of your body to see the difference. Give up all milk and dairy products for just one week and an internal “fog” will lift from your body. Is genetically engineered milk dangerous? You bet! There is very little difference between the two.

Vegetarianism... Give It A Week
By Nicole Reynolds
It’s almost Spring! Time to shed those unwanted winter pounds and revitalize yourself!
consider eating more meatless meals, think about the savings of buying beans instead of steak!
One way to get our bodies back into “balance” from winter’s excess is to eat more fresh vegetables and fruit. In fact, why not kick start Spring with a vegetarian body cleanse for a week?
Celebrities such as Alicia Silverstone, Woody Harrelson, Paul McCartney and recently, Bill Clinton, are bringing vegetarianism to the forefront. Pamela Anderson has been a spokesperson for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for 20 years. And Consider Oprah’s Meatless Monday pledge!
Vegetarian you say? Aren’t vegetables eaten all day boring? And I’ve heard that it’s unhealthy. In actuality, there is overwhelming evidence that a plant-based diet is extremely beneficial to your health. Plants contain substances called “phytochemicals” which doctors and scientists are discovering protect us from cancer, heart disease and more. Additionally, plants are the primary source of all minerals in our diets. Not to mention weight. Research has shown people following a typical vegetarian diet consume, on average, around 500 fewer calories daily than their meateating counterparts. Interestingly, the research showed that they actually ate more food than non-vegetarians. Actually, vegetarians are generally healthier overall. They have better overall vitamin intakes, compared with meat-eaters. Meat has essentially no vitamin C and is low in many other vitamins, as well. In contrast, vegetables, fruits, and legumes (beans, peas, and lentils) are vitamin-rich. In heart studies conducted, people switching to vegetarian diets typically increase their intake of several vitamins, and reduce their intake of the undesirables—saturated fat and cholesterol. They also tended to lose approximately 15-20% of their BMI. Vegetarians also consume more beneficial fibre, vitamins and antioxidants than their meat-eating friends. If that’s not reason enough to 16 Cedar Springs Health | Spring/Summer Edition
A vegetarian diet can be flavourful and exciting and varied in addition to being healthy. In fact, there is more support and resources for people exploring this lifestyle than ever before! If this seems too daunting a challenge, consider
becoming a “flexitarian” which describes a person that eats dairy, eggs and meat only some of the time but maintains vegetarianism most of the time. Refusing meat is not a limiting proposal. If it is approached the right way, it can open a whole world of new culinary adventures! So, if you are looking to “Spring clean” your body this season, consider becoming vegetarian – at least for a week! You won’t believe how good it feels! Badminton
Badminton at the Olympics does not resemble anything like what you play in your back yard. There are many international level players who can smash the bird up to 320 kph. Stop by the courts at Cedar Springs and you will be surprised by the explosive skills of our top players.
The average rally in badminton is over 10 hits, compared to tennis, which is usually just over three. So badminton is really fast and continuous. Badminton is the second most popular participatory sport in the world, just behind soccer. In the 1996 Olympics when badminton debuted it was the most watched sport. In Beijing in 2008 badminton tickets for the Olympic event were the first to sell out. With estimated 2 million participants in Canada, badminton is the most popular racquet in the country. The junior badminton program at Cedar Springs is run by the ADVANCE Badminton Academy. The coaching staff includes head coach Boris Chiu and assistant coaches Rob Bennett, Ernest Nketiah, Benno Kurvits and Len Carter. The academy offers group lessons and private instruction. Participants can choose from three different group lesson packages that are designed to cater to a variety of needs and schedules. Group lessons are organized into three training teams. They are team 3 (beginner – learn), team 2 (intermediate – play) and team 1 (advanced – compete).
Private instruction is available on a first come first served basis with the coach of your choice.T he organizers and coaches are committed to making the game of badminton fun and enjoyable for all participants while being conscious of teaching the correct techniques at as early an age as possible. The first ADVANCE Badminton Training Camp was recently held over March break. It was a huge success. The camp attracted young boys and girls from all over Ontario. Cedar Springs was the ideal location and venue to hold this event due to its outstanding courts and wide range of amenities. Plans are underway for summer camps so be sure to watch for details in our newsletter and circulars at the club. The badminton courts are available to badminton members for recreational play as well. Cedar Springs boasts 4 high quality badminton courts and they are available 24 hours. Courts can be booked in advance when there is no junior training or organized programs to guarantee access. Organized programs include open play, men’s team play, club tournaments and challenges. So no matter if you are looking for a place to learn the game of badminton and get some exercise while having fun or if you want to train to become a national champion. We hope to see you on the courts. www.advancebadminton.com

Kristine Haemal Member Profile:
While watching her fraternal twin sister play Badminton Kristine Haemel was inspired to give the sport a try when her sister would talk about “how amazing it was!” This led to Kristine discovering a natural talent in this high-energy sport. Coming from a soccer background: past and present - Kristine finds Badminton an effective way to improve her hand eye coordination and physical conditioning. Kristine made her start in the sport playing for St. Clair College four years ago. “I immediately liked playing so I thought after college I would continue” Kristine told us with a smile. After college she continued her journey playing for the Lester B. Pearson Badminton Club at Lester B. Pearson High School. Although it was exciting, Kristine – along with other members, felt that they needed a club they could play at more frequently. This landed Kristine straight on the doorstep of Cedar Springs Health Racquet & Sportsclub! A proud member of Cedar Springs for 2 years now, Kristine competes in all categories of the sport: Singles, Mixed, & Doubles. When asked which category she enjoys playing the best, Kristine admits “Doubles, when I get to play with my twin sister Stephanie”. Currently Kristine is gearing up for the upcoming Hamilton & District Masters Badminton Championships
held here at Cedar Springs on Saturday April 28th & Sunday April 29th. Kristine plans to compete in all categories of the tournament and looks forward to playing on her home turf. Previously, Kristine competed in an open tournament in Windsor last month under the proud title of Cedar Springs. Kristine was pleased to report that “the club is getting a lot more recognized at these events over the years – which is exciting”. Kristine walked away from this tournament winning herself some useful merchandise including string, grip & sweatbands. When asked what her greatest win had landed her she exclaimed “Money!” When chatting about events that Kristine looks forward to throughout the year she happily described the “Georgian Open”. What makes this tournament so exceptional? “This tournament lands on my sister and I’s birthday” reports Kristine “as we both compete in it, it allows us to see each other and celebrate!” With Stephanie living in Barrie you could tell that the little time the sisters had to see each other was deeply cherished. Suited up and racquet in hand – you’ll find Kristine kicking butt on the courts every Monday for ladies night and recreationally on Wednesdays & Fridays. We wish Kristine much success at her near approaching tournament at the end of the month 25 Cedar Springs Health | Spring/Summer Edition
Squash
Squash has always seemed to have the reputation of being the sport of higher education, wealth and status. Years of T.V. and films have taught us that when squash is mentioned, it is usually a successful business man who plays this particular sport. Even in the 2002 film “Squash”, the game is played between two business men.
and keep you there.”
These men seem fit and healthy, and for good reason, but with the popularity the sport has received, squash is not just for the rich and powerful anymore.
Currently, squash associations are lobbying for the sport to become a part of the Olympic Games. Having missed out on the 2012 London Games, they attempted to make the 2016 games without luck.
In 2003, Forbes magazine declared squash the “healthiest sport” beating out rowing, rocking climbing and swimming for the top spot. Squash is a fantastic cardiovascular workout, burning anywhere from 600 to 1,000 calories an hour. At the same time, each player works their arms and core while twisting their bodies for extra reach and swing. Additionally, squash can be regarded as a lower body workout due to the amount of running the sport requires. Squash scored high across the Forbes charts in cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and calories/per half hour. With low risk of injury, squash was an easy choice for the healthiest of sports. The endurance it requires makes losing weight and staying healthy easy for players. As writer Neal Santelmann said in his article, “each of these sporting activities is a great way to get you fit-

With the accessibility of squash offered at Cedar Springs, joining in on Forbes’ “healthiest sport” is easy and you don’t have to work on Wall Street or Bay Street for that matter, to play.
Paul Webb Member Profile:
Playing squash for a total of 30 years, Paul Webb began his squash journey years ago in a Toronto apartment complex. Retired now for a year and a half, Paul has been able to spend more time on the courts, and less on other areas of life he doesn’t enjoy as much. “I’ve had more fun with squash people then any other group over the years,” Paul said, when asked about his dedication and focus to the game. Paul is a retired police officer and former marine contractor, who spent his time away from work either sailing or playing squash to unwind after a hard day on the beat. As a former officer Paul needed to maintain his health in order to perform his job at the optimal level. When asked how squash fit into this regime, Paul chuckles and responds, “Squash is tough on the knees. I feel pretty lucky I’ve managed to escape injuries over the years.” This has certainly influenced his recommendation of cross training to prevent injury. A practice Paul still maintains today to keep his knees from doing him in on the court.
League representing Cedar Springs, enjoying the intense and tough competion between the many clubs involved. “ Every week you know you are going to have a real battle on the court, so it keeps you motivated to play as much as possible , so that you don”t embarass yourself. The League attracts the best players in the Toronto area, and Cedar Springs has done well over the years. “ “CS is by far the best,” he says. When asked why, Paul responds, “the people.” Paul loves the people that play squash here; they hang out after in the bar, “more fun, less aggravation” he says. Demonstrably, Paul is an avid and dedicated member of CS. His love of the game, the people and the camaraderie, and when asked why squash, Paul said, “squash has been a fantastic game for me over the years,” with a smile.
Having been a member of squash clubs from Toronto to Stoney Creek and now Cedar Springs, Paul is not unfamiliar with the competitiveness on the court. He shared a story with us during our interview of a six month job he had in Sarnia years ago. He and his crew had to live together for the duration of their contract. “Six guys from my crew had to live in a house together over the term of the job and did nothing but bicker! I went to the local squash club in Sarnia and got all six guys a squash membership. I never had to hear them argue again since they took their frustrations out on the courts, not on the job.” Paul is an inspiring man. Handsome, dedicated, athletic and a great father! He still plays squash with his 27 year old daughter Taylor and her husband. Although she plays at White Oaks, Paul doesn’t mind going from court to court to play. In fact, he can be found anywhere from Buffalo, to Toronto or Montreal just to compete in a tournament. Last year Paul competed in the Double Smitty Tournament in Montreal, and most recently at a tournament in Buffalo. This year he is competing on March 30th Paul has played many years in the Toronto District 27 Cedar Springs Health | Spring/Summer Edition

Wendy Hooper
“It was the right time, and the right Mimi…” Cedar Springs Personal trainer Mimi, and club member Wendy Hooper set off on a journey together. A journey to get Wendy’s health back on track and shed those extra pounds. A club member for 8.5 years – Wendy Hooper has experienced drastic changes to her once high weight, through her dedication to making significant changes to diet and lifestyle. Close to being vegan, this 48-yearold woman has taken control of her life, and her well being – “with a little help from her trainer Mimi”. Wendy can be found at the gym Monday to Friday from 5am-7: 30am, and running 8-21kms on Saturday mornings. With a diet plan constructed by Mimi that allows her to lose 2lbs per week, she is definitely a woman on a schedule. “If you looked in my freezer there would be frozen chicken, but I eat vegetarian for lunch,” she says with a smile. Wendy is definitely a woman on a mission to improving her overall health and wellbeing. In training for over 3 months now, Wendy participated in The Chilly Half Marathon & Frosty 5K early March. It may have been her first 1/2 marathon, but Wendy was confident her hard work would pay off. “I take my Cliff Shots and go! They are solid carbs… helpful for keeping your energy up while running long distances,” Having finished in the top half of all the people (men & women) who ran the Chilly Half Marathon with a time of 2:02:10, Wendy clearly puts to practice all the advice and recommendations
Mimi gives her. When asked what made this time different for Wendy in terms of achieving her weight loss goals, she gives a respective, “It was the right time, and the right Mimi.” Mimi’s constant motivation is instrumental to her success, and she has even begun to notice that people at the gym have been an amazing support system for her as well. Being surrounded by others who are working on their own personal fitness goals is encouraging, and helps Wendy know she isn’t alone in her efforts to achieve and maintain optimal health. She is training with Mimi twice a week for a commitment of 4 months, and then will scale down to once a week for 3 months followed by once every other week to maintain her body. She believes it is 100% worth it, and would never give up Mimi for going back to burgers and fries. We asked Wendy, “What would you say to someone who says hiring a personal trainer is too much money?” Her reply, “Save all the money you spend on burgers and fries every week and use it for paying for your trainer instead.” Wendy’s smile no doubt alludes to her never going back to those burgers and fries. After catching a rather unflattering picture of herself, Wendy opted to make a change. A big change, more than that a LIFE change. She changed her diet, took on a trainer, and is happier with herself now more than ever. Training for her first _ marathon of many more to follow, has given Wendy a small taste of the level of health she desires, we’re sure. Wendy has this to say, “Don’t give up, if you don’t succeed keep trying, at some point you will find a balance between diet and workout!” 29 Cedar Springs Health | Spring/Summer Edition

Pilates through my cancer Journey
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Jan 2011. After the initial shock, many tests, entering a world of Doctors and medical facilities, processing lots of information and accepting what is, I made a conscious decision to stand steady and fight. My focus was on maintaining my Pilates teaching and practise, not allowing cancer treatments to be my life, keeping a positive outlook and trying to maintain as much control as possible. Thanks to Pilates I was physically and mentally strong going into treatments, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I firmly believe this helped me through, being able to heal more readily following surgery, maintaining range of motion, flexibility and muscle strength through my shoulder. After each infusion I bounced back, teaching and working out when I was able. Feeling empowered, improving my self-esteem, feeling as normal as possible. Some days were a real push but I soon recovered and have no doubt it aided in boosting my immune system compromised by the toxic drugs. My digestive system, cardio/ pulmonary fitness, maintained muscle and bone density, helped with insomnia, digestion, fatigue, painful joints, weight control, nausea, body image and general sense of wellbeing. I could not help compare myself to fellow cancer patients whom I chatted with, so many in poor physical condition having led a sedentary lifestyle with no regular exercise. They did not endure so well and some became very depressed, dwelling on their cancer. I am convinced that appropriate exercise is the key in boosting the healing process and reducing risk. If diagnosed with cancer and inactive then start something slowly, if active keep it up. We need to nurture the body and mind! It has amazing self-healing qualities. I will be forever thankful for the immense support from the amazing members, fitness instructors and staff at Cedar Springs. They held a fund raiser “Walkalates” to help me with the cost of drugs and loss of income. A member held a breast cancer awareness seminar in the lounge. Brought my family cooked meals, gifts, drives to radiation, lots of comforting hugs and encouragement. Words can’t express how grateful and blessed I feel to be a part of such a wonderful fitness family; Cedar Springs is far more than a great Health & Racquet Sportsclub. This experience has reaffirmed many things. Don’t take your body and good health for granted, keep in touch and listen to it. Don’t be afraid to get something of concern checked out. Maintain regular exercise and healthy life style choices. I am now fully recovered and as strong as before, thanks to Pilates and all the positive support. Today’s science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by cinnamon and honey, as researched by western scientists:
HEART DISEASES:
Cinnamon & Honey ...Who ever thought? Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. What it will do is what some call ‘turning to sugar’. In reality, honey is always honey. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will “crystallize”. When this happens loosen the lid, boil some water and sit the honey container in the hot water, but turn off the heat and let it liquefy naturally. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. This will kill the enzymes in the honey.
Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply it on bread instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, when they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins.
ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily (morning and night) one cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. When taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week (out of the 200 people so treated) practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain -- and within a month, most all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis now started walking without pain.
BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder..
CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, when taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.
Cinnamon and Honey
COLDS:
Bet the drug companies won’t like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon:
Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses.
It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a ‘Ram Ban’ (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. 40 Cedar Springs Health | Spring/Summer Edition
UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from its root.
GAS : According to the studies done in India and Japan , it is revealed that when Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.
IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks.. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles (where DNA is contained) to fight bacterial and viral diseases.
INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food is eaten relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.
INFLUENZA : A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ‘Ingredient’ which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.
LONGEVITY : Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Use four teaspoons of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of water and boil to make a tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans increase and even a 100 year old will start performing the chores of a 20-year-old..
RASPY OR SORE THROAT: When throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms.
taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.
CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder three times a day for one month
FATIGUE : Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts are more alert and flexible. Dr.. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, even when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, when taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M., the vitality of the body increases within a week.
BAD BREATH: People of South America, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water first thing in the morning so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.
HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!
PIMPLES : Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes all pimples from the root.
SKIN INFECTIONS: Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.
WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast and on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. When 41 Cedar Springs Health | Spring/Summer Edition
BRADY HESLIP Local Super STAR 42 Cedar Springs Health | Spring/Summer Edition
Written by: Sara Mirlach
The Baylor Bears are a lucky team to have Brady Heslip within their ranks. The Burlington native was originally intended to play for Boston before being scooped up by Baylor. Brady’s story doesn’t begin there however; Brady’s basketball roots go way back. Heslip credits his dad for encouraging him to work hard and achieve his dream. “My dad always told me nothing is going to be given to you,” said Heslip from his Waco school campus last month. “He got me started at a real young age. He taught me the fundamentals and then I practiced a lot.” And practice he did. Brady was a regular at Cedar Springs as a youngster and teenager, often found on the court for hours working to perfect his three-pointer. He could regularly be found on the club court for eight hours a day shooting baskets and searching for bigger, stronger players he could play with to improve his game. “I would stay there all day and eventually would call my mom to come pick me up”. The harder he worked, more effort he gave, and the endless hours he dedicated to his practice, paid-off. Now a successful guard for the Baylor Bears and attending one of the oldest and most dignified universities in the U.S, Brady Heslip remains true to his Canadian roots; returning home for holidays and pledging that he plans on playing basketball as long as he can, “but I will definitely be back in Canada afterward”. Occasionally while home visiting his family who still lives in Burlington, he can be found on the courts of Cedar Springs, or haunting his old outdoor training areas if the Canadian weather allows. Being home, he can’t help but recall the beginnings of his basketball journey from Cedar Springs, then on to Hamilton and eventually Toronto in search of a better test in which to improve his game. Despite his eventually traveling outside of Burlington to improve his skills, Brady credits his dad Tom and the time they spent on the courts of Cedar Springs with his signature three-point stroke. Father Tom is a former all-Canadian basketball player at Guelph who Brady still admires.
like Steve Nash, that Brady has a reason to dream Canadians can make it to the NBA level. In fact, he’s hoping the next step in his career will be the NBA; after college of course. The once relatively unknown Brady Heslip is now reaching superstar status at the NCAA level. Having coined a trademark move in a New Mexico tournament last month, in which he hit a clutch three-pointer and out of pure adrenaline and emotion put his hands together forming a pair of goggles over his face. Since coining his signature move against Kansas and blowing up the court against Kentucky, Brady has been inundated with texts, tweets, e-mails and phone calls, coming in from Canada and across the U.S. When asked how he’s responding to this new celebrity status, he replies in a confident but humble way. “The attention doesn’t faze me but it is definitely something new for me. I’m not thinking too much about the attention though.” He’s clearly ready for NBA player status, with his feet solidly placed on the ground, and his heart solely in the game. His Canadian roots keep him humble and focused on the game and not the attention. It is his single-minded concentration and passion for the game that allows him to play purely on instinct. In fact, with Brady on the team, Baylor is now becoming a real threat to making the Round of 8, and may be the team that outranks Kentucky this year. While losses are emotional and can bring down team moral, Brady tries his best to keep positive and honed on improving his skills each time he steps on the court. Dedicating hours to training both on and off the court is a commitment he has taken with him since his days at Cedar Springs. Perhaps Canada will be lucky enough to see Brady within its own NBA ranks, following in his uncle’s foot steps either as a couch, but more preferably an all star player.
“I was blessed to have a basketball family, to be around them to get the basketball knowledge. If kids love the game enough there are ways to get better”. The family line doesn’t stop with his father, its roots extending to the NBA has inspired Brady to shoot for the stars quite literally. His uncle is Jay Triano, the former Raptors head coach and bench boss for Team Canada. It is because of his uncle’s success, and that of other Canadian basketball players 43 Cedar Springs Health | Spring/Summer Edition
Fitness Tips & Tricks Side Plank with Lateral Raise
Seated Dumbbell Over head Press This is a basic compound movement. Hold the dumbbells in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing out. Drive the dumbbells up in a slight arch until the elbows are fully extended. Do not lock your elbows. Keep your head upright and eyes looking forward. Exhale on the lift and inhale when lowering the weights to the starting position.
For beginners keep your elbows directly under your shoulders. Advanced exercisers can be in an extended arm position (as shown). Hold your body straight from head to toe. Stack your feet on top of each other with the weight resting on your hip. Hold the plank position and slowly raise the weight until it is perpendicular to the ground. Slowly lower the weight to the starting position. Remember to start with a light weight and gradually add a heavier weight. Remember do not drop your head through the movement. Community Work at Cedar Springs
By: Bonnie Tompkins, Fitness Director I had the honor to work with our local Carpenter Hospice on a pilot project that they had decided to try as a part of their wellness program. The wellness program is a day program with chronically ill patients who are trying to make a difference in their quality of life. Majority of the participants had or have cancer at one stage or another.

The pilot project was based on some very strong research that has come from the Macmillan Cancer Support program in England. The findings have suggested that cancer patients should do low level activity especially when they are on chemo. The idea is that when they are on chemo and doing activity, the patients may absorb more of the medicine as their circulation is increased during activity. Cedar Springs was approached to see if we could teach such a low impact class for the wellness program. I was extremely interested in this project and decided that I wanted to be the instructor getting to work with the participants. The pilot project was to run once a week for a month and then based on participants results it may continue. During the class we would work all the main components of a fitness program. It was done in partners to aid anyone who was having balance issues do to the side effects of chemo. The class ran in a circuit style with come cardio and strength exercises. During the cardio exercises I tried to cover hand/ eye and foot co-ordination as well as direction changes. The idea behind this was to better help the body deal with any sudden changes, for example a slip (hoping this will prevent them from falling). In the strength sections we covered exercises that would help them with their daily activities, for example, getting out of a chair.

The program went very well as we had some great improvements in the participants abilities and Cedar Springs and myself have been asked back on a permanent basis as of May 2012.

Low Interest Rates Fueling our Housing Market By Dan Cooper Low interest rates continue to fuel the strong real estate market we are experiencing in Oakville and Burlington. While the number of transactions this year appears at par with 2011, average house prices are showing significant gains. The average house price in Oakville, for example, was 13.4 per cent higher in March compared to the same month last year. For the first three months combined, the average price was 5.8 per cent higher than the same quarter in 2011. The figures show the market was unusually robust last month which resulted in tight inventories and strong price appreciation. Buyers were attracted to the market by historically low mortgage rates and sellers brought listing inventory to market earlier than normal, encouraged by unseasonably warm weather. In the first quarter, the average house price was $648,291 in Oakville this year, compared to $612,726 in the same quarter last year. It appears the housing market is being pulled in opposite directions by opposing economic forces. On one hand, there is the rapidly strengthening U.S. economy, increasing Canadian consumer confidence and what can only be called a national mortgage sale, encouraging activity and bidding up home prices. On the other, we have signs of over-shooting values and strained affordability in our largest cities. According to a recent Royal LePage national survey, we are likely to see much more modest price appreciation as the year unfolds. Price appreciation and
strong unit sales reflect Canadians taking advantage of borrowing rates that for the first time, fell below three per cent for a five-year fixed mortgage and a banking environment that the Royal Bank of Canada has referred to as, “Hyper-competitive.” The Bank has said that the heightened uncertainty around the global economic outlook has decreased, but the global economy is still expected to grow at a pace below its long-term average. The Bank also noted that U.S. growth was proceeding at a modest pace and the emerging Chinese economy was slowing, although its rate of growth is still considered high. The price of oil can change this international picture. The Bank has warned that if sustained, higher oil prices could slow the global economic momentum. Here at home, the Bank said the outlook for the Canadian economy had improved, though only marginally, but has been warning us about a domestic risk as households continue to spend and add to their debt burden. That being said, interest rates are expected to hold well into next year with the Bank happy to sit on the sidelines for now. This is good news for the real estate market; while prices will continue to rise, buyers can invest knowing they will continue to enjoy low mortgage rates for months to come. Tennis Tips By Sam Rifaat, Director of Tennis. Cedar Springs Health, Racquet & Sportsclub As we get ready for the summer season of tennis here are some tips that remind us of how to improve your doubles game.
Tips on Poaching: Poaching is when your doubles partner is serving and you set at the net to play the ball returned after the serve. This is to throw off your opponents and cause a disruption in the service return as you play the ball quickly before the bounce. By approaching the net to poach you try to throw off your opposition. You often see the partner of the server put one hand behind the back to signal whether he plans to poach or not. Also don’t be afraid to get passed 2 or 3 times/set. When poaching you will not get to make every ball. Getting passed means you miss the ball but are still working to get into the head of your opponent. The intent is to throw the opposition off their game. You want them thinking about what you will do and not what they want to do. •Attitude- Show up at least twenty minutes before you play. Do some light cardio to warm muscles. •Timing- The best time to poach is once the returner has set. Your opponent is ready to return serve and you move to the net for a quick return. You can also fake going to the net to poach once the ball bounces in the service box •Footwork- Face your shoulders forward while you are moving laterally on the court to be able to come back to the ball if necessary. This is a more athletic stance allowing for quicker reaction and recovery. •Targets- Where to hit your poached shot. If your opponent is at the net you could try aiming towards them. This gives the player less time to react and handcuffs them. That’s not to say you should hit them with the shot but it is ok to aim at their feet or to hit the ball tight to their body. Remember if you have not played tennis since last fall your body will not be on the same page as your mind. Don’t forget to warm-up and work on the eye hand co-ordination.
Sam has been the director of tennis at Cedar Springs for 25 years. Cedar Springs operates 11 indoor hard courts and 2 outdoor seasonal clay courts. Sam runs and co-ordinates programs including beginner lessons, cardio tennis, round robins, tenfit, adult lessons, clinics and academy programs.
