TRAINING CAMP

SPRING TRAINING Kirk Layfield, N.D. M.S. EMT-P

Info provided by Jack Lesyk, Ph.D of The Ohio Center for Sports Psychology

It’s spring time and time to start making you preparations for this summers race events. Spring is the perfect time to begin your mental preparation for the big dance at Loretta Lynn’s or whatever your big race might be. Mental fitness and sports psychology play a major role in motocross and can often times make the difference between winning, losing or making it on the pro circuit. Having competed in a few recent events, I wanted to go back and analyze my race performances to see what I could have done better and the psychology and mental preparation side of my training is one thing that stood out the most. That being said, let’s take a look at Dr. Jack Lesyk’s nine mental skills of successful athletes and see where to make some improvements in our race program training. There are nine, specific mental skills that contribute to success in sports. They are all learned and can be improved with instruction and practice. The Performance Pyramid Although each of the nine skills is important, its primary importance will occur during one of three phases: long-term development, immediate preparation for performance, and during performance itself. Level I - These mental skills constitute a broad base for attaining longterm goals, learning, and sustaining daily practice. They are needed on a day-by-day basis for long periods of time, often months and years. Level II - These skills are used immediately before performance to prepare for performance. They maybe used just before competition begins, or immediately before a specific performance action, such as a golf shot or a free throw in basketball. Level III - These skills are used during actual performance behavior. The pyramid represents the relationship of the nine skills to one another. Each of the higher levels incorporates and is based upon the skills of the preceding levels. Detailed Descriptions of the Nine Mental Skills 1. Attitude Successful athletes: Realize that attitude is a choice; Choose an attitude that is predominately positive; View their sport as an opportunity to compete against themselves and learn from their successes and failures; Pursue excellence, not perfection, and realize that they, as well as their coaches, teammates, officials, and others are not perfect; Maintain balance and perspective between their sport and the rest of their lives; Respect their sport, other participants, coaches, officials, and themselves. 2. Motivation Successful athletes: Are aware of the rewards and

12

FLMX MAGAZINE APRIL 2013

benefits that they expect to experience through their sports participation; Are able to persist through difficult tasks and difficult times, even when these rewards and benefits are not immediately forthcoming; Realize that many of the benefits come from their participation, not the outcome. 3. Goals and Commitment Successful athletes: Set long-term and short-term goals that are realistic, measurable, and time-oriented; Are aware of their current performance levels and are able to develop specific, detailed plans for attaining their goals; Are highly committed to their goals and the daily demands of their training programs. 4. People Skills Successful athletes: Realize that they are part of a larger system that includes their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and others; When appropriate, communicate their thoughts, feelings, and needs to these people and listen to them as well; Have learned effective skills for dealing with conflict, difficult opponents, and other people when they are negative or oppositional. 5. Self-Talk Successful athletes: Maintain their self-confidence during difficult times with realistic, positive self-talk; Talk to themselves the way they would talk to their own best friend; Use self-talk to regulate thoughts, feelings and behaviors during competition. 6. Mental Imagery Successful athletes: Prepare themselves for competition by imagining themselves performing well in competition; Create and use mental images that are detailed, specific, and realistic; Use imagery during competition to prepare for action and recover from errors and poor performances. 7. Dealing Effectively with Anxiety Successful athletes: Accept anxiety as part of sport; Realize that some degree of anxiety can help them perform well; Know how to reduce anxiety when it becomes too strong, without losing their intensity. 8. Dealing Effectively with Emotions Successful athletes: Accept strong emotions such as excitement, anger, and disappointment as part of the sport experience; Are able to use these emotions to improve, rather than interfere with high level performance 9. Concentration Successful athletes: Know what they must pay attention to during each game or sport situation; Have learned how to maintain focus and resist distractions, whether they come from the environment or from within themselves; Are able to regain their focus when concentration is lost; Have learned how to play in the “here-andnow”, without regard to past or anticipated future events. The mental side of motocross can be a game changer for almost every rider. Take a look at your program and see if you could benefit from some of Dr. Lesyk’s suggestions. That’s it for this month; please visit www.innovationtrainingsystems.com for all your fitness and nutrition needs. Limited space is still available for group and one on one training for your summer and fall race program, contact me for more details.

ATLANTA SX RACE REPORT

2013 AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES ROUND 8 ATLANTA, GA 02.23.13

STEWART IS HOT IN ATLANTA SIX12 RaceTech Race Report

The series has finally reached the East Coast, and with it came a lot of stoked East Coast fans as they would sell out the Georgia Dome with 70,000 filling her up. A lot of riders wanted to see their hometown Florida/Georgia Boys as Davi Millsaps came in with a big points lead over RV and Dungey. A big ovation also welcomed James Stewart and you could tell from his Heat Race last week in Dallas, it looks like James is getting back to his old self. Stewart loves the East Coast and it showed as he had the fastest lap time in practice, would easily win the Heat Race and now looked to take it into the Main. It looked like James was back the week before in Dallas as he straight up passed and beat RV in the heat, but a broker clutch would hold him from even leaving the gate in the main. At the start on the Atlanta Main Event it was Stewart and RV coming around the 1st corner 1-2. The race was on, the defending champ VS Stewart! James would start putting in some great laps, jumping all the way over the Dragon Back and extending his lead to a comfortable gap. It has been nearly a year since James had won, and was looking for a win once again, and his first on his Yoshimura Factory Suzuki. Millsaps would jump up into the 3rd spot early in the race, but was not able to close the gap on RV and Stewart. Towards the end of the race RV looked to be reeling in James but Stewart would pull it back out the final lap and come home with his first SX win of 2013! RV would finish up 2nd and close down 2 points on Davi who was 3rd. Barcia and Canard would finish up 4th and 5th on their Factory Hondas. Dungey had a bad start and finished 6th. Eli Tomac had his 450 debut, after logging the 2nd fastest time in practice, the Geico Honda rider would wind up in 7th after a bad start. Reed was 9th and not happy about his speed and result. Andrew Short made his debut on the BTOSports.Com KTM team, he had a great ride in his heat, finishing 2nd, but struggled early in the Main and came home 14th.

14

FLMX MAGAZINE APRIL 2013

In the 250 Class it was all Wil Hahn on his Geico Honda. He would battle and pass his team mate Zack Bell in the heat and take the win, but would not have to pass anyone in the main. Hahn rocketed to the front with the holeshot in the main and started to speed off. Dean WIlson would start 2nd and hold the gap reasonably and kept him honest throughout the 15 laps. But Hahn was too much to handle and he came home strong with his first even SX win!! Hahn was greeted by many as he is a big favorite and couldn’t have been happier. Marvin Musquin put in a solid rider too, finishing in the final podium spot on his Red Bull KTM.

VORTEX VET NATIONAL SIX12 RaceTech Race Report

PICS BY: ANDREA BARNETT

This year marked the 10th annual Vortex National Vet Motocross Championship, held at Motocross of Marion County. “For the last two years the turnout was less than we had hoped. We have contributed this to bad of cool weather forecasts,” stated Lou Whittney, series president. Even with that being said there was no shortage of great racing. Lots of great battling across the board between Michael Treadwell #9 (Tolland, CT) and John Grewe #70 (Cedar Springs, MI). In the +30 VET PRO MONEY class Fernando Macia #17 beats out Grewe in moto 1. In moto 2 Treadwell comes back from a 4th place finish to take the moto win. Grewe takes the overall with a 2-2, followed closely by Treadwell’s 4-1. Macia rounds out the podium with a 3rd overall. The excitement continues in the +40 VET PRO MONEY class where Grewe wins moto 1 over Treadwell, who was at a close 2nd throughout the race. In moto 2 once again Grewe is out front but Treadwell capitalized on a late moto mistake taking the lead and the moto win. Treadwell’s 2-1 beats out Grewe’s 1-2 for the overall. A well fought race by both riders. Dennis Bourque #73 (Palm Bay, FL) rounds out the podium in 3rd place. National title holder, Gary Semics #57 (Lisbon, OH) gets a 4th place, which is not bad for somebody who is knocking at the door of 60 years old. The 4 Stroke Open class was also filled with some great battles between Cody Williams # 889 and Jesse Deryke #524. With Williams taking the win in 250 expert, he would be no match for Deryke who fought hard and in the last few laps pulled away for the victory. Deryke finishes 1-1. More great racing by John Camelio #14 (Holbrook, MA) who went 1-1 in the 50+ exp/int class, along with Steve Dumond #211 (Middleberg, FL) who sweeps the 40+ exp/int 1-1 as well. We’re already looking forward to next years race, hopefully with a better turn-out and even more great racing action.

The first Amateur National of the year has arrived! 2013 is here and the season kicked off in early March at the Millcreek MX track in Alabama. RPM Sports had the track set up great as this track is one of the favorites of many riders from across the nation with its perfect dirt and elevation changes. Riders came from across the country to attend the first national with close to 50 classes to choose from. The weather was chilly and rained a bit, but the racing was hot as usual! Matt Bisceglia, on his Amsoil/FC Honda came prepared and ready to race at the first National! The rider from Weatherford, Texas would end up with 3 Titles out of a possible 4 in the A and Pro classes. Jett won 3 titles including the 51 (4-8) Open Mod, 51 (7-8) Mod and 51 (4-8) Open Stk. If it wasn’t for a couple DNF and DNS, Reynolds would have left with more hardware! Jon Jon Carver, from Cataula, Georgia, was the man to beat in the 51cc (4-6) Mod and (4-8) 2 Stroke & 4 Stroke classes. Jon Jon won both titles beating out Aiden Dickens, Ryder Cooper and Cole Kish. Gage Linville won the older (10-11) and Open (7-11) classes while Miller won the younger (7-9) classes. Miller did race against Linville in the Open class where he won the second moto but it was Linville coming out on top with a 1-2-2 score against Millers 2-1-4. Jace Kessler slipped in there with a moto win in the final moto and finished 3rd overall. HOME TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS SIX12 RaceTech Race Report

PICS BY: ROB KOY

This year was the 4th annual Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross at Daytona. It is held the 2 days after the Pro SX takes place on the same track design. Of course the track is tamed down so the riders don’t have to try to race on pro scaled SX track but it is still a great race that is put on by MX Sports. This year the track layout was great once again as RC works one on one with all the crew making sure the track is safe and runs smoothly. Hundreds of riders from across the country attended trying to get a hold of their very own National Title. RJ Hampshire came out swinging on his CarPortEmpire.com Honda in the A/Pro Sport classes! After driving all night back to FL from the Millcreek National in Alabama, Hampshire looks phenomenal on his new rides and had some great battles with Jace Owen, Thomas Covington and Cody Chisholm. In Heat 1 of the 250 A/Pro Sport, Owen and Covington were going at it heavy for the lead with RJ right there. The 3 then started going at it and on the last lap Hampshire would take advantage of the Owen/Covington battle to take the win. With a 5th in his heat of 450 Pro the classes were set for the final mains. The 450 A/Pro Sport would be RJ’s as he had a good battle with Owen and Covington once again but would come out on top for his first A National Title. In the 250 A/Pro Sport class Covington came across the line for the win over Owen and Chisholm with Hampshire 4th. RJ would get his 2nd title in the College (17-24) class as he made easy work of the class in the main event, beating out Bryson Taylor and Jason Astudillo. The RaceTech/KTM rider of Donny Brown came down from Tennessee and captured the 450B title over Jeff Walker and Bryson Taylor. Brown wasn’t done there though as he backed it up with a big win in the Schoolboy 2 class over Alexander Frye and Jeremy Smith. Frye and Smith would also win titles. Frye took the win in the Two Stroke class over Andy Kost and Shelby Peterson. Jeremy Smith took his Honda to the top spot in the 250 B class, beating out Oscar Esparis and Jacob Williamson. Nicholas Jones, from Whitby, ON, took home 2 titles as well on his Kawasaki. Jones would win the 450 C class over Denton West and Barneys/ SIX12 RaceTech rider Robbey Ruffner. In the 250 C class Jones and Ruffner both went in with Heat race wins and was a battle all the way down to the checkers after Ruffner holeshoted and a mistake would allow

His only lost would come in the 40+ A class as Barry Carsten took the win. Richotte, from Ravensdale, Washington, took the Senior B/C 40 and 45+ titles home on his Kawasaki. DAYTONA SX RACE REPORT

2013 AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES DAYTONA SX DAYTONA, FL 03.10.13

MARVIN MUSQUIN MASTERS FIRST WIN SIX12 RaceTech Race Report The 2013 Daytona SX got to see some fantastic weather compared to last years muddy mess. The amazing weather brought out an incredible crowd also as the stands and front straight away of the track were packed. The track was designed by Ricky Carmichael again and it was set up with some great passing areas and different timing sections that would allow from some incredible races. The tack was long, the main event for the 450 guys was around 28 minutes, on a beat SX track, thats a long time! Looking at the Main Events, the 250 guys started us out with Marvin Musquin timing the gate absolutely perfect on his Red Bull KTM. Musquin took the perfect start and holeshot and started to pull away after Dean Wilson

DAYTONA SX RACE REPORT cased a jump and banged his head. As Wilson started going backwards it allowed Dean Wilson and Jeremy Martin to get by and try to go after Musquin, but that wasn’t happening. As the track developed and got rougher, Musquin was smooth and kept pulling away! Easily winning his first event main event, KTM was very happy as they have put years into him and were waiting for him to deliver. Wil Hahn was 2nd and kept his red plate while Jeremy Martin put his Star Yamaha on the podium for the first time ever. In the 450 Main event it was Ryan Villopoto with the holeshot, but would go off the track early and hand the lead over to Red Bull KTMs Ken Roczen, who was riding on the 350 in his only 450 race of the year. The German took full advantage of his mistake and decided to lead for a little bit! This kid is for real and is riding unbelievable. Barcia was in 2nd and trying to get around Roczen, but it was RV who would make the pass on both of the riders to take the lead. Barcia would find his way around Roczen and keep RV honest, actually catching him a little bit sometimes. Towards the end it was Ryan Dungey getting by Barcia for the #2 spot, but their was no catching RV as he had a 9 second lead and took another win here at Daytona. Dungey was 2nd, Barcia 3rd and Tomac 4th. Chad Reed went down on the opening lap and would fight his way back all the way to 5th. Stewart was fast once again in his heat race winning it, but struggled in the main with crashes and finished 8th. The Points leader Davi Millsaps had a injury during practice in the week, hurting his knee. He would finish 10th and hand the points lead over to RV. With the 2nd half of the season here, RV is on a roll, and its going to be very hard to stop the Kawasaki rider from getting yet again another championship.

CSC SX PARTY

CYCLE SPORTS CENTER TEAM KTM DAYTONA SX PARTY On Friday, March 8th, Cycle Sports Center in Orlando hosted its annual Team KTM Supercross party as part of the pre-race festivities for the Daytona Supercross. CSC owners Tom and Dave Wagner put together a host of vendors including Flip Page from Parts Unlimited, Armando Prieto from Fox, Todd Wichtner from Tucker Rocky, Western Powersports and many more to provide their customers and party goers with some of the best deals available on parts and accessories. Two new sponsors for this years event that were really popular included Bubba Burgers, who provided all the food, and Red Bull who had there complete line up chilled to go along with a hot off the grill Bubba Burger. In addition, CSC had literally hundreds of giveaways from T shirts, hats, gear bags and much more. The early part of the evening’s program included guest appearances by KTM’s off road team including 2011 GNCC Champion Charlie Mullins, Steward Baylor and Kailub Russell. The off-road riders signed autographs and interviewed with Rob Buydos for about an hour, and assisted with some of the trivia questions for giveaways. In addition Special guest Dick Burleson and Mike Lafferty, eight time national enduro champion, made an appearance and were a big hit with the GNCC crowd that was on hand.

40 FLMX MAGAZINE APRIL 2013

The evenings featured who made the trek over from Daytona were Ryan Dungey, Marvin Musquin, Michael Byrne and Matt Goerke. Ken Roczen was unable to make the trip. The KTM riders signed autographs for nearly 2 hours, answered lots of questions and had literally hundreds of pictures taken with their fans. The CSC crew did an outstanding job with the party and this event looks as if it will continue to grow every year with riders, industry support and good times. Although the crowd was a bit disappointed that the former World Champion Ken “Rock Star” Roczen was not there, everyone understood that the logistics just don’t always workout. In the end, everyone had a great time with the KTM team and all the great gifts CSC gave away. Thanks again to Tom and Dave Wagner for hosting a great event! If you could not make it this year make plans to attend next year for some quality time with your favorite KTM riders. Cycle Sports Center would like to invite everyone to get involved with their race program. They offer great deals on KTM, Kawasaki and Yamaha motorcycles, parts and accessories to put you on top of the podium.
