TRAINING CAMP ITS TRAINING FOR 2013 Kirk Layfield, N.D. M.S. EMT-P
The fall race season is almost upon us with Gold cups starting at the end of the month and then of course the Winter Olympics rounds out the year in grand fashion. For most of us we consider this time of year as the start of next season and begin to make our plans and set goals for the following year. This month I am going to talk a little bit about a new training program I developed, maybe pat myself on the back for some of my accomplishments and talk about how you can get involved in the program for the 2013 race season. Anytime you start something new a positive mental attitude is critical in order to accomplish the goals you have set. Here are a few things I think are important in terms of positive mental attitude. 1. The choice is yours. Your life is the product and result of your choices. You always have a choice. 2. Limit your time in front of the TV. Do something that will enhance your life. Manage your time around your highest priorities and values. 3. Build the habit of using positive language. Listen to the words you use. Avoid words like ‘always’, ‘never’, ‘can’t’, ‘won’t’ and even ‘why.’ Say ‘I choose’ or ‘I want’, instead of ‘I need’ or ‘I should’ and notice the difference. 4. Surround yourself with positive people. Surround yourself with people who have a positive influence in your life, people who speak the truth and support you. Expand your circle of positive influence with people who are further ahead in personal and professional development than you are. Disassociate with negative people who impede your progress. 5. Develop a “Givers Gain” mentality. Give away what you seek without expectation or measuring. When you seek success, help others to be successful. When you seek happiness, help others to find happiness first. 6. Invest in yourself. Hire a trainer, coach or whatever you feel can help you accomplish your goals. Be willing to pay for something that will benefit you the rest of your life. 12
FLMX MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2012
7. Let go of anger, resentment and judgment. Hanging on to negative emotions like anger or resentment will drain your energy and hinders you from moving forward to create positive change in your life. 8. Create positive, realistic expectations and take action. Make sure your expectations are congruent with who you really are. You are what you believe, and you become what you expect. Expect the best, and only the best, from life, from others, and from yourself. Take action on your expectations. 9. Stop believing in what you think is true and start believing in what you really want. Identify and let go of limiting beliefs that no longer support or honor you. Instead develop empowering beliefs that are aligned with your goals, values and your heart’s desire. 10. Take responsibility for your own life. Focus your attention on what you can control: you’re thoughts, your actions, your behavior, your emotional state and your daily actions and activities. You’re the steward of your own life and are solely responsible for the results and experiences you create. It all starts with your attitude. Now that you’re motivated, let’s talk briefly about this new program. I recently completed my Doctorate and now have the ability to provide some additional services as part of a riders program. This program is very unique with nutrition, fitness, flexibility, mental preparation, blood work, nutritional supplements and much more including personal one on one training and ride time practice sessions. I have a limited number of spaces available for this one on one program but there are many different levels at which you can participate in the training. Please feel free to contact me for more details and I will be accepting resumes starting in September- December for the program. Lastly, the other day an FLMX reader asked about my background and I realized that it has been 14 years since I began a column with FLMX and there is a new crop of readers out there that have no idea what qualifies me as a professional on fitness and nutrition. So here’s a brief summary of my credentials: Bachelors and Masters Degree from The University of Florida in Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine, Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine / Nutrition, Fighterfighter, EMT and Paramedic, over 25 years experience in health, fitness and emergency medicine. I raced motocross for roughly 30 years, held an AMA Pro license for 20 years, won 3 national titles as an amateur, multiple top 5 finishes at Loretta Lynn’s, won the Winter Am’s, Winter Olympics and Gold Cup multiple times as well as 2 World Championships at The World Police and Fire games motocross. In addition to FLMX I have provided information to several other motocross publications including Racer X Virtual trainer, MX East, MX America, MX Rider, Final Lap, Moto Playground, Motocross West, MX Rider and maybe a few more I cannot remember. The bottom line folks, your rider is in the best hands possible for their training program. I would be happy to entertain any questions on the program and as always please visit www.innovationtrainingsystems.com for all your fitness and nutrition needs.

LORETTA LYNN RACE REPORT RED BULL AMA LORETTA LYNN AMATEUR NATIONAL HURRICANE MILLS, TN • AUGUST 2012
PICS BY: CHRONICMX.COM
RC AND AC CLEAN UP AT LL The 2012 Red Bull AMA Loretta Lynn National is the biggest race all year for every amateur kid in the country. Riders actually from all over the world will attend the area qualifiers, regionals and then if they have made it through the qualifiers they will get to make the drive to Hurrican Milles, Tennessee to Loretta Lynns Dude Ranch! The Area’s started back in March as the riders vied for the top 7 spots to make it to the Regional. From there the riders would have to qualify in the top 7 once again to fill the 42 man, or woman, gate. Some riders the biggest goal is just making it to Lorettas. Anything from there is just a bonus. Other riders, this is the biggest race of the season. It can make or break a contract for next year, put them on the map, or help them fall right off of it. Lets take a look into the 2012 National and break down the top riders 14

from Florida who finished up in the top 10. The biggest rider to show up this year was non other than 10 times MX Champion, the GOAT, Ricky Carmichael! RC has been retired for a few years now and wanted to come back to the Ranch to do some racing and bring his family. He said that his kids were to young when he retired so they never really got to see him race. Nothing like bringing them back to the Ranch to see what a real Family MX Vacation is all about. RC decided to race the 25+ class with all of the other retired Pros, but they would not put up much of a fight to the most decorated champion our sport has ever seen. RC made easy work of the field by winning every moto pretty easily. The last time he won a championship

was back in 1996 in the 250 A class, so even with a 16 year break, he never forgot how to win at LL. Adam Cianciarulo his our next big hope from Florida. Turning 16 later this year, AC came to LL knowing this was his last year on small bikes and is looking to make the jump to big bikes soon. Their is even some talk of him going straight to the Pro Class next year to fill the spot at Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki. AC concern this week though was the put his Kawasaki to the top spot in the Supermini 1 and Supermini 2 classes. The week started off with AC pulling the #42 spoon at the gate for moto 1, this put him all the way to the outside, which is a very tough spot to pull a start. This did not slow down AC as he hooked up perfectly and held it pinned all the way from the outside to grab the holeshot! The week started off perfect and ended perfectly for AC. He won every moto pretty convincingly and left the Ranch with 2 more titles to hang on his wall! Will we see AC next year at the Ranch of big bikes? We will have to wait and see what Mitch Peyton has in store for his prodigy. Another rider who cleaned up at Lorettas was Jordan Bailey. The Suzu16

ki rider put together some of the best rides of his career to add 2 titles to his resume. In the 85 (9-11) Stk class he would finish second to Garrett Marchbanks, from Utah, and Dylan Greer had a solid 3rd place finish. Bailey would surge back in moto 2 to take the win over Marchbanks. Both riders were tied going into the final moto, whoever won, would win the title. Greer had a tough second moto, finishing 21st, but came home with a 5th the final moto for 8th overall. Bailey pulled through win the moto win and overall! In the 85 (9-11) Mod class Bailey made it much easier on himself by going out and winning the fist two motos. He knew a 2nd place in the final moto would secure the championship, and that is where he finished to take home his 2nd title of the week! Floridas 6th and final championship of the week came from Yamaha rider of Jazzmyn Canfield. The Deltona resident took the win in the Girls (9-11) class. Canfield was perfect as she won every moto over Jordan Jarvis, who was from North Carolina. In the Girls (12-15) class it started off perfect for Hannah Hodges as she went out and won the first moto! Hodges would stay consistent in the next two motos going 4-4 to finish 3rd overall on the week. Kylie Fasnacht had a great week also where she finished up 4th overall. She went (4-3-3). In the Womans

LORETTA LYNN RACE REPORT 14+ class Leah Cantrell took her Kawasaki to a 6th overall, 6-10-6. RJ Hampshire had a solid week aboard his Honda. The Hudson, FL rider rode the 450 B Stk class and Schoolboy 2. Hampshire was 9th overall in the 450 class going 4-715. In the Schoolboy class he finished 4th overall going 7-6-6. RJ is still young and can ride the Schoolboy class again next year. If his advancement points don’t move him up to the A class he should be in the hunt for some big titles next year! In the 450 C class Austin Pare was 10th overall going 11-12-18. In the College B/C (16-24) David Hagins had a solid final moto to secure 7th overall, 12-14-7. In Schoolboy 1, Lorenzo Locurcio struggled in his early motos, but finish on the podium in 3rd in the final moto to finish up 6th overall, 14-7-3. Earl May, from Tallahassee, trained with RC all Summer to get ready for the Plus 40 and Plus 45 classes on his Team Green Kawasaki. May finished up 3rd overall in the Plus 45 class going 4-3-3. May was 6th overall in the 40 Plus with a 8-9-5 score over Dennis Bourque. Bourque was 7th overall going 9-6-7. Bourque also raced in the Plus 35 class where he finished up in 9th overall going 11-8-8. Sam Allen Jr was 9th in the Plus 50, 7-15-7. In the Mini classes, Lane Doyle had a tough first moto in the 51 (4-6) Stk Lim class with a 9th, but backed it up with a 3rd and a 2nd in his final 2 motos to finish up 4th overall. Tommy Rios was 6th overall in the 65 (10-11) Stk class going 12-8-7. Cullin Park was our top Florida finisher in the 65 (7-11) Mod class with a 10th overall, 7-6-21. Finally Tyler Pantley had a solid showing in the Sr. Mini (12-14) Stk and Mod classes. Pantley took his Suzuki to a 6th overall in the Stk Class, 4-10-5, and a 7th overall in Mod, 13-10-5. A great year once again for Florida at Loretta Lynns! We didn’t come home with the most titles, that went to California who had 9 titles to our 6. But 2013 is right around the corner, I know we can come back and take the title as the fastest state in the country! See you at the Areas next year!

DADE CITY - ROUND 10 • 08/19/12
CHEESMAN
CRUISES AT DC The 10th round of the Florida MX Series headed to the center of the state for some fun in the sun and sand. Dade City would host this round, with a wet week, it looked like the weekend could be a real washout but the crew at DCMX had the track in tip top shape. Did it get rough? Of course, its Dade City back track, so all of the riders would have a long tough day ahead of them. Kyle Cheesman aboard his SIX12 RaceTech Suzuki captured 2 overall wins and was your fastest Mini rider of the day. Cheesman started off his day in the JR Mini 9-13 class, the Brooksville, FL rider took the first moto win in front of Dunnis Mullen on his Yamaha and Jeffrey Ackerman out of Stuart in 3rd. Moto 2 would see Cheesman once again out front and take the win, this time over Cole Williams and Ackerman in 3rd once again. The consistent 3-3 would give Ackerman 2nd overall and Williams was 3rd overall. Cheesman would then back up his performance in the 85 12-14 by winning both motos on his Suzuki, bringing home all 4 moto wins and 2 overalls. In second was Billy Baker from Palm Bay, going 3-2 and Ackerman once again, who was 3rd this time, 2-3. Tyler Lang also took home two overall wins on his KMS Kawasaki 85. He won the 85 9-11 and Supermini class! Bradford Young had a very solid day aboard his Kawasaki. The Delray Beach rider first took the win in the 450 B class going 1-1 over Austin Starkweather, 2-2 and Alex Patapis, 3-DNS. He then took both moto wins in the super fast Youth 12-15 class, this time over BPM Racing Hondas AJ Meadows, 2-2 and Austin Pare 3-3. Young then went and won the first moto of the 250 B class but DNS the second moto, but still 22

finished up 3rd overall. Matt Karwat took home 2 overall wins, first up in the 250 C class by beating out Bryce Mauldin and Raymond Johnson. He then went on to win the Youth 16-24 class over Shane Kehoe and Nathan Anderson. He did come up short for his 3rd overall win in the 450 C class, where he finished up 2nd to Brian Castleberry. Great showing by the Ferrys also on this day as the Father/Son combo of Timmy and Evan came out to do some racing on this Sunday. Timmy made easy work on his Kawasaki beating out Russell Clay and Jonathon Moss. Evan Ferry would win the 50cc 7-9 class over Jacob Spong and Chase Tompkins. Evan was also 2nd overall in the 50cc 4-9 Open class, he was beat out by Cody Russell, with Spong in 3rd. SEPTEMBER 2012 FLMX MAGAZINE

PICS BY: ROB KOY
Baggett Brings Home the W The MX series traveled into the wonderful world of sand this weekend! A pivotal turning point for the championship is always at MX 338, in Southwick Mass. Some of the most historic rides ever have came from this place where local riders, or even better, riders from Florida shine and can make a name for themselves. This year it was looking like it could be a muddy weekend with a lot of rain hitting the track days before, but Saturday it was clear and sunny and dried up nicely. The 28

riders were in for a good old fashion day of long rough motos! In the 450 class Ryan Dungey made it look pretty easy in moto 1, but not after he had to get around Mike Alessi who pulled the holeshot on his MotoConcepts Suzuki. Alessi would ride smart and hold the lead until the halfway mark when Dungey would get around him. Dungey would hold on to the win for his 12th moto win out of the last 13. Alessi

would hold onto second, while Tommy Hahn posted his best finish of the season on his Muscle Milk Honda in 3rd. Biggest surprise though was Massachusetts own Robbie Marshall finishing 4th on his Munn Racing KTM! In the second moto it was no surprise as Alessi pulled the holeshot once again but was quickly passed by Dungey. It looked to be all over until Dungey cross rutted over a jump and went down! Making it worst for Dungey, his gas capped popped off and would lose a considerable amount of fuel. This put Alessi back in the lead with Dungey in second. Dungey mounted his charge and got his way past Alessi. The rider then on the move was Factory Kawasaki’s Tyla Rattray. He made his way past Alessi for second. Dungey would then have to make a pit stop to get the extra fuel that he had spilled! Rattray inherited the lead and would go on to win his first ever 450 moto! Dungey finished second, but would take the overall. The 250 class saw the Rookie Zach Bell, who just graduated out of Lorettas, grab the holeshot on his Geico Honda. He would take off and lead the first couple of laps and look very strong. Bell then started getSEPTEMBER 2012 FLMX MAGAZINE

ting pressure from his team mate Eli Tomac. Tomac would get around Bell, and then a few turns later Bell would go down hard and would end his moto. Tomac then sped off to a huge lead and held onto the win over Red Bull KTMs Marvin Musquin and points leader Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett. In the second moto it was Troy Lee Designs Honda rider of Jessy Nelson with the holeshot in front of Ken Roczen. Roczen would jump into the lead quickly and start pulling away, all the while first moto winner, Eli Tomac tipped over and went back to 10th. Baggett was 2nd with Barcia in 3rd as Tomac started flying through the pack. Towards the end of the moto Baggett would reel in Roczen and make the pass, but Roczen didn’t give up, as he would make his was back into the lead. Barcia was right there too and was looking to make the pass on Baggett but went down. Baggett would hold onto the lead barely over Roczen, to take the win and overall. 30

KTM’S HISTORIC DAY Unadilla is located in Northern New York and is one of the oldest and most historic race tracks that we have in the United States. Located in a valley, the track stretches in and out with large up hills and down hills, off cambers, with huge rocks! Back in the day they would leave the track covered in grass for practice, making the real natural terrain stand out! The track has been cut short and better for TV now, still not a favorite of a lot of riders, but it is hard to take away such a historic track. Moto 1 of the 450 class, probably one of the most exciting races of the 34

year. Factory Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart came back at Unadilla after a hiatus. It never hurts when the fastest man on the planet is back on the track. BTOSports.com/BBMX Suzuki rider pulled the holeshot and would lead for a short while until James Stewart came blazing around him. James would then pull a lead and start checking out in front of Byrne and Weimer. Favorites, Dungey and Alessi were both having problems with crashes and were way back. It looked to be a perfect return for Stewart, until he went down hard and could not restart his bike. That handed the lead back over to Byrne and Weimer.

Weimer then would lead and start opening up a small lead until he went down hard in a sweeper! It was Byrner back into the lead! Until the 27 minute mark it was all Byrne, pulling a lead and having a comfortable gap over Broc Tickle and Dungey, it was looking like BTOSports.com Suzuki was going to get their first win! Then disaster struck, Byrne went sideways and put his foot out in a rolling sweeper section and broke his leg, without even crashing! Byrne was out, this handed the lead to Tickle who was holding off Dungey, and would try until about a lap and a half to go. Dungey would make his way around, and take the win. Tickle was 2nd and Millsaps 3rd. Moto 2 saw Chaparral Honda’s Andrew Short with the holeshot just in front of Dungey and Alessi. Dungey would pressure Short and take the lead early. Dungey and Alessi would then check out of the field and make it a 2 way battle. Stewart would have his own problems once again, going down hard, this time breaking and dislocating his finger. Dungey and Alessi kept it 1-2 all the way until the end with Dungey winning, Alessi 2nd and Short 3rd. With the overall Dungey captured the 450 Title! The first one ever for KTM in the big bike class, not bad for Dungeys 1st year on the orange bike. 36

In the 250 class we saw Zach Bell once again pull the holeshot on his Geico Honda, but went down again while leading. He handed the lead over to the two Red Bull KTM riders, Roczen and Musquin. Roczen set a blazing pace and took off! This was by far the best we had seen him ride as he pulled away from the pack. Roczen has led a lot this year, but had always lost it in the closing stages of the moto. Not this time as he had a big lead over his team mate Musquin. Roczen would win his first ever 250 moto in the states. Points lead Baggett was 3rd after Roczen. Moto 2 saw the Geico Honda Brigade come out strong to start it off. Justin Barcia would lead it over Bell, Bogle and Tomac. First moto winner Roczen started getting sick between motos and would struggle outside the top 5. Tomac was on fire, passing his teammates of Bogle and Bell and then set his sights after Barcia. Each lap he cut the lead down until he made the pass and pulled a gap for the win. The overall though would go to the consistent ride of Marvin Musquin. His first ever overall and the first time KTM has ever won both classes on the day!
