TRAINING CAMP

SPRING TRAINING Kirk Layfield, N.D. M.S. EMT-P

Spring is in the air and the perfect time to get outside and do some training. This time of year is critical for most riders who compete at the National level as area qualifiers for Loretta Lynn’s are in full swing and the regional qualifiers are right around the corner. Let’s look into some different methods of training this month that may change your program and way of thinking. On a recent trip to Durhamtown for my son’s spring break I discovered a few things that really made me re-think some of my thoughts on in-season training. First, let me make it perfectly clear that there is no substitute for seat time and one can make allot of progress in a few days when given the opportunity to ride everyday day against riders of equal or higher ability level. My son who has been riding a KLX 110 for roughly 3 months on his own without help, he still cannot touch the ground while sitting on the bike, rode three days straight at Durhamtown and was not only improving his lap times but putting his foot down around corners, standing up through whoop sections and clearly gaining confidence with each day that past. Not surprising right, well I usually only ride once a week maybe in most cases if I am lucky. However, I had not ridden in 2 weeks having just got over pneumonia while trying to race the Loretta’s qualifier at Reddick, Vet National at Reddick and Daytona Amateur Supercross. In addition, I had surgery on my sinuses in late January which helped start the roughly 6 weeks of being sick. All that being said and all my excuses on the table, I continued to train hoping to improve my chances at these events. Keep in mind that training for me is going to the gym about 4 times per week, no specific motocross weight training program and riding maybe once a week. I rode two long motos 3 days straight while at Durhamtown and had not been in the gym for about 2 weeks. I tell you this because of how surprised I was at how comfortable I was on the bike, riding loose and relaxed with what felt like minimal effort. So why would I feel better on the bike without training or riding for over 2 weeks? Let’s look into that next. In most cases riders who are serious about their racing will ride as often as possible, race as often as possible and generally spend 3 or 4 days a week in the gym with weights and cardiovascular exercises. Is this the right formula to make a champion? In my opinion and experi-

12

FLMX MAGAZINE MAY 2013

ence I would say no not always. Finding the right combination takes a series of trial and error sessions and working with someone who actually understands the process of proper nutrition, race prep in the form of practice or seat time and the right form of exercise off the bike in the gym. There is no off season in motocross so how does one find out what the right thing to do consist of? Great question I am glad you asked and let’s move into that next. Everyone’s a trainer these days and every track has the former local hero teaching the younger generation the right way to do it and that sometimes is a good thing. However, just because someone can or could go fast on a motorcycle does not make them a great teacher nor does that mean they understand proper training techniques in the gym or how to develop the right program or have any knowledge in nutrition and the science behind how god’s greatest creation works with what we provide for it. Since there are some many people providing training these days my suggestion would be to interview each potential trainer, ask questions on education, and experience on and off the bike and previous clients with references. Ultimately you will hire who you feel most comfortable with but consider the trainers formal education, not weekend certifications courses, race history and results and clients they have worked and client’s results. An average trainer can make a great rider look better and win races but a great trainer can turn an average rider into a champion. This is most noteworthy in the top amateur and professional ranks. In conclusion, here are a few suggestions to try and accomplish your training goals on your own. First, figure out how many days a week work best for you when it comes to practice and improving your skills and race endurance on the bike. Second, start with a basic fitness program that includes all body parts 3 days per week with weights and cardiovascular exercises and monitor your progress and how you feel on the bike. Make changes to your program by changing your program a little at a time with different exercises and training techniques/intensities. Third, develop a sound/basic nutrition program that includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, some lean meats and plenty of water. These three basic principles will help the average weekend warrior improve his or her overall fitness and performance on the bike but if you are looking to take things to the next level you will need professional help. That’s it for this month. Please visit www.innovationtrainingsystems.com for all your fitness and nutrition needs. If I can help with your spring training please feel free to contact me. I would be glad to talk with you about your training. Next month I have a special for the old guys, Vet training!

FLMX: Zack, 2013 is your 2nd year as a full time Pro. You were much more prepared coming into this year. How was everything coming into the year? ZF: Yes, this year we were a lot more prepared! I got bikes a couple weeks after outdoors. We set them up and started preparing for the SX season really early to get a head start. I rode at my track all season and was ready to go! FLMX: Unfortunately you had the biggest UP and DOWN race of your life at Houston. You pulled the holeshot and then suffered a crash and broke your leg. Go through the day, the race and crash. ZF: Yeah Houston was a good one till half way through the main. I qualified good in practice and went to the heat race just going for the holeshot. I didn’t end up with the start but ended up second. I rode in second in the race till two laps to go and went down. Got up and ended up 7th. Wasn’t too happy but was in the main safe. Then I went in the main with some confidence knowing I could get the start and run up front. I practiced my start on the hot lap and came in way to the hot in the first turn and wrap myself up in the tough blocks almost going down but I knew I had to come in hot coming from the outside. So the gate dropped and I drove it in deep and came out with the start. I was stoked! I messed up before the whoops and was past by two guys. Came around in third and was comfortable. Half way through I was in 5th and went off one of the singles by the mechanics area and clipped a tough block and went down hard. My bike was toast. That was it my leg was hurting and took to the asterisk rig. FLMX: What was the extent of the injury? Did it require surgery and when can you return to riding? ZF: Well while I was in the asterisk rig they X-rayed it and said I had a hair line crack in my fib. They said I’d be out for a couple weeks but they still wanted me to get it checked out by my doctor. So I went home and went to Dr. Augustine on Monday and got some more X-rays and it wasn’t good. It was broke worse than we thought and needed surgery. So I went for surgery the next morning. FLMX: You made the switch to Hondas and put together your own team. How are your bikes,

the team and who’s all helping you out? ZF: Our team Maykers / Witts end/Honda is great! It’s me and Ryan Zimmer on the team. The bikes are great, one of the best I’ve rode. We have a lot of guys behind us. We couldn’t do any of this without Scott and Kelly Witt!! We also have Maykers, Witts end racing, BPM, Pro Circuit, Renegade Fuels, Scott goggles, Fly, Bell helmets, Alpinestar, Dubya, Cycra, Pit Posse, Hinson, Outlaw, Renthal, Moto Seat, DT1 filters, Galfer, List designs, Gator Core, Asterisk, RPM, Dunlop, Hollywood racing, Tim ferry and my family. FLMX: You looked like you were getting comfortable out there putting in top 10 rides. How was SX going and were you reaching goals you set for yourself? ZF: I went in the season with a goal of being in the top ten every weekend and get some top fives. I got an 8th in Daytona and bad starts and crashing in some other mains kept me from some top tens and a top five. So I didn’t reach all my goals but the good thing was the speed was there so I just need to fix a few things and we’ll be right there! FLMX: Will you be racing the outdoor season? ZF: Yes I will be racing outdoors with the Maykers / Witts End/Honda team. FLMX: What are your goals for the rest of the season? ZF: My goals for the rest of the season are to get good starts and be a top ten contender every moto. FLMX: Who is helping you out this year? ZF: Maykers,Witts end racing, BPM, Pro Circuit, Renegade fuels, Scott goggles, Fly, Bell helmets, Alpinestar, Dubya, Cycra, Pit Posse, Hinson, Outlaw, Renthal, Moto Seat, DT1 filters, Galfer, List designs, Gator Core, Asterisk, Kicker, KOB customs , RPM, Dunlop, Hollywood racing, Jeff Petters, mechanic Cory Huberty, Tim Ferry, Scott and Kelly Witt and my family. FLMX: Good luck for the rest of 2013, any parting words? ZF: Thank you, see ya at the outdoors!

DADE CITY MX CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES VORTEX LITES DADE CITY, FL ROUND 3

DJ DESTROYS ROUND 3 SIX12 RaceTech Race Report

The 3rd Round for the Vortex Lites class took place on April 6th, this being the only race in April, these riders would have a long lay off before the next round. The track was switched up once again but the hard packed new clay was still there. DJ MacFarlance won the first two rounds and was looking to keep his winning streak alive. In the Heat Races we saw one of the biggest get off’s of the year when AJ Meadows hit neutral over the back table top and endoed all the way to the ground! Suffering a hurt shoulder, AJ who was running 2nd in points was out for the night. DJ would win his heat and took #1 gate position into the main. In the Main Event DJ would pull the holeshot and would see the rest of the top riders struggle in the first turn and be way back. Evan Walker on his Xtreme Honda would hold down second and Stephen Culleny 3rd. DJ would stretch out a huge lead and never look back. He told me it was one of the easiest races he’s even rode as the top runners struggled and he got out front early and never looked back. Congrats to Walker and Culleny getting on the podium as they took advantage of the others mistakes for their fortunes. DJ now has over a 100 point lead after 3 races and hasn’t lost a Heat or Main event race yet. Can anyone challenge to Williams Performance KTM rider?

MONSTER ENERGY SX SERIES

HOUSTON SX HOUSTON, TX ROUND 12

VILLOPOTO CRUISES

TO 5 IN A ROW SIX12 RaceTech Race Report

PICS BY: chris weedon

Round 12 of the Monster Energy Supercross Series headed to Texas once again. This time to Houston, which has some of the best dirt of the season with great traction. Ryan Villopoto has won 4 races in a row in the 450 class and is starting to stretch out his lead on Rockstar Suzukis Davi Millsaps who is struggling with a knee injury. In the 250 class Wil Hahn and Marvin Musquin have turned it into a 2 way battle for the championship with Musquin coming on strong lately. Heat 1 of the 250 class saw a slew of Honda riders out front as the points leader Wil Hahn led them around and to the finish aboard his Geico Honda. He would take the win over BPM Honda’s Cole Thompson and Vince Friese. Zack Freeberg would get into the main event on his Markers/Witts Honda in 7th. Heat 2 saw the fast Frenchman Marvin Musquin take the heat race win over Tyler Bowers and Blake Wharton. This was Bowers first race for the Pro Circuit Kawasaki team as that team has had a horrible year with injuries. In the 450 class the old Trey Canard looked to be back! The Muscle Milk Honda rider showed a lot of speed in practice and then took home Heat race #1 pretty easily over his team mate Justin Barcia and RCH Suzuki’s Josh Hill. Heat 2 saw Alessi pull the holeshot but was quickly passed by Villopoto who would stretch out a lead quickly. Stewart would get into second but RV took the win. In the 250 Main Event it was Zack Freeberg with a perfect start and his first ever holeshot putting his BPM powered Honda to the front but would relinquish the lead to Wharton and Musquin in the whoops where Zack was struggling. Freeberg would race in the top 6 for the most of the moto until he ran into some trouble. Wharton would lead but Musquin took back the lead and then the two started trading the top spot with Wharton taking the lead. Musquin looked to be making a move on Wharton but would go off the track in the

28 FLMX MAGAZINE MAY 2013

HOUSTON SX RACE REPORT

whoops, hitting some tuff blocks and go down. This handed over 2nd spot to Hahn. Wharton had a good gap that Hahn could not close and would take his first win of the season on his Rockstar Suzuki. Hahn was 2nd and Musquin got into 3rd not to lose but a couple points to Hahn. It was Mike Alessi with another holeshot in the 450 Main Event on his MotoConcepts Suzuki. RV was second and would get around him very quickly and into the lead. After those 2 it was Canard, Dungey, Stewart and Barcia. They would all clear Alessi quickly but their was just no catching RV. Dungey would get around Canard in the whoops to take 2nd spot and Stewart soon followed. Stewart started to pressure Dungey but then ended up on the ground with his Suzuki on top of him. Something was visibly wrong as Stewart rode into the mechanics area and his night was done. Dungey stayed strong in second as Canard came home in 4th in front of his team mate Barcia. Davi struggled in 5th and lost even more points to RV. This made it 5 in a row for RV, the longest win streak of his career!
