BLOOD DOPING KIRK LAYFIELD N.D. M.S. EMT-P

info source: WebMD

This month I decided to venture into uncharted waters as many questions have recently surfaced as to some riders possibly blood doping to increase their performance. It’s a fairly complicated procedure and being a research geek on any form of fitness or nutrition I decided to educate myself a little more. Here is what I found out. Blood doping is an illicit method of improving athletic performance by artificially boosting the blood’s ability to bring more oxygen to muscles. In many cases, blood doping increases the amount of hemoglobin in the bloodstream. Hemoglobin is an oxygen-carrying protein in the blood. So increasing hemoglobin allows higher amounts of oxygen to reach and fuel an athlete’s muscles. This can improve stamina and performance, particularly in long-distance events, such as running, cycling and motocross for that matter. Blood doping is banned by the International Olympic Committee and other sports organizations but I have no idea if the AMA or MX Sports has a policy on blood doping but rest assured it is being looked into.

Types of Blood Doping

The three widely used types of blood doping are: blood transfusions; injections of erythropoietin (EPO); and injections of synthetic oxygen carriers. Blood transfusions. In normal medical practice, patients may undergo blood transfusions to replace blood lost due to injury or surgery. Transfusions also are given to patients who suffer from low red blood cell counts caused by anemia, kidney failure, and other conditions or treatments. Illicit blood transfusions are used by athletes to boost performance. There are two types. Autologous transfusion. This involves a transfusion of the athlete’s own blood, which is drawn and then stored for future use. Homologous transfusion. In this type of transfusion, athletes use the blood of someone else with the same blood type. EPO injections. EPO is a hormone produced by the kidney. It regulates the body’s production of red blood cells. In medical practice, EPO injections are given to stimulate the production of red blood cells. For example, a synthetic EPO can be used to treat patients with anemia related to chronic or end-stage kidney disease. Athletes using EPO do so to encourage their bodies to produce higher than normal amounts of red blood cells to enhance performance. Synthetic oxygen carriers. These are chemicals that have the ability

12

FLMX MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2013

to carry oxygen. Two examples are: HBOCs (hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers); and PFCs (perfluorocarbons) Synthetic oxygen carriers have a legitimate medical use as emergency therapy. It is used when a patient needs a blood transfusion but: human blood is not available; there is a high risk of blood infection; or there isn’t enough time to find the proper match of blood type. Athletes use synthetic oxygen carriers to achieve the same performance-enhancing effects of other types of blood doping: increased oxygen in the blood that helps fuel muscles.

Tests for Blood Doping

There are tests to detect some types of blood doping, but not all. Here’s a roundup of testing for different types of blood doping: Autologous transfusions. Currently, no test exists to directly detect autologous transfusions. Instead, indirect methods are used. One indirect method involves comparing an athlete’s blood profile at testing time to blood samples collected at previous times. Significant differences between the two indicate possible blood doping. Known as the Athlete Passport, this method is endorsed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Homologous transfusions. Blood doping via homologous transfusion can be detected by testing. The tests were used at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. EPO injections. Blood and urine tests can detect the presence of synthetic EPO. But EPO remains in the body for a very short time, while its effects last much longer. This means that the window for testing can be quite brief. Additional testing methods aimed at detecting new forms of EPO are currently being researched. Synthetic oxygen carriers. A test is available that can detect the presence of synthetic oxygen carriers. It was first used in 2004.

Risks of Blood Doping

By increasing the number of red blood cells, blood doping causes the blood to thicken. This thickening forces the heart to work harder than normal to pump blood throughout the body. As a result, blood doping raises the risk of: blood clot; heart attack; and stroke An estimated 20 European cyclists are believed to have died as a result of blood doping over the past 25 years. Blood doping via transfusion carries additional risks. Tainted blood can spread infectious diseases such as: HIV; Hepatitis B; Hepatitis C. Over time, repeated blood transfusions can cause a dangerous buildup of iron in the body. Improperly stored blood and improperly administered transfusions can cause acute lung injury and bacterial infection. Blood transfusions also have potential side effects of: allergic reactions; fever; rashes or hives. The risks of EPO injections include: hyperkalemia (potentially dangerous elevation of plasma potassium levels in the body); high blood pressure; mild flu-like symptoms. Athletes who use synthetic oxygen carriers have an increased risk of: heart disease; stroke; heart attack; blood clot. I hope you enjoyed this month’s feature and look forward to seeing everyone at the Gold Cup series races. FLMX: Ricky, it looks like you couldn’t stay away from retirement. From NASCAR to now owning a race team. What has life been like since you retired from racing? RICKY CARMICHAEL: Haha, you’re right... I think you become busier when you say that you’re retiring because then you have to do all things you used to be able to say no to and it’s very time consuming but it’s been fun and a nice adjustment. I like the position I’m in now, for the most part.

14

myself that moto would be a better experience as a racer if it was more like that. I’m thankful for the opportunity I got and was able to do some pretty cool things during my time there.

FLMX: You won 150 races, never lost a outdoor title, had 2 perfect seasons... Growing up and racing at Dade City did you ever think you would achieve so much in your career? RC: Not a chance, it’s crazy when you look back from the early days but it happens so fast that you never realize what you have done until it’s over.

FLMX: You joined forces with Carey Hart, brought on Suzuki and created RCH Racing. The team has now set the standard for our sport and continues to grow. How is everything going? RC: Yes I did. It has been good. The timing was just right and things fell in to place, very rarely does that happen in business. Everyone works very hard on our team and strives to be the best whether it’s off or on the track and I think our style of program is the way that the sport is going. It takes a lot less burden off the factory and they can’t get the same results. It’s much more economical for everyone I believe.

FLMX: How was it racing around the NASCAR scene? Did you enjoy it? RC: The NASCAR scene was fun and great experience. Totally different way of racing and vibe. It was always weird to me how all the drivers were buddies with each other and there wasn’t hardly any animosity amongst the drivers, it really made it nice and I always thought to

FLMX: What are the short and long term goals for the team? RC: Short term goals are to keep growing and improving week after week and our long term goal is to be a championship caliber team with a championship caliber rider, winning races and titles and putting on a good experience in the pit area for our fans.

FLMX MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2013

FLMX: Any new plans for 2014? RC: As of now our plans for ‘14 are just to keep growing and strengthening out a position for ‘15. FLMX: You also have RCU in which you get a few great pros and teachers to help out the young amateurs. How is the University and what do you have planned for that? RC: The RCU has really been great and something that no other been able to bring to the sport. It’s a great experience and a lot of knowledge that we bring to the event, we work very hard to make sure everyone has a great experience and time and can learn. We want to keep making it better each year and something special for everyone. I have had a great time with it and it’s so cool to see everyone’s face during and after the event. FLMX: Each year you bring SX to Florida to have the RC Daytona SX Amateur SX Race. It continues to grow and everyone looks forward to that weekend. How did this race all come together?

16

FLMX MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2013

RC: The RCAMSX has been awesome. Davey Coombs and I kicked around the idea many years ago and finally made it happen. It’s a special venue and a place with a lot of history that I believe all of our riders should want to see and be a part of. I remember growing up wishing I could have raced there as an amateur and now to be able to provide that for everyone is huge for me personally. Also I think even though it’s a watered down version of the pro race there for safety reasons it’s a good experience to get these younger guys exposed to SX at a younger age so when they do eventually turn pro they have some experience with it instead being thrown in to the deep end. FLMX: Anything else in the works in the future? RC: Haha, as of now no. With everything we have talked about that is enough and just focusing on making everything above better. FLMX: You just completed your Charity Golf Tournament. How was it this year? Who does it support and how much was raise? RC: Yes, our 5th annual Ricky Carmichael Charity golf

18 FLMX MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2013

tournament was great! We have a lot of local support that help and donate as well as my personal sponsors from the moto side. It’s really cool to be able to give back to families that are in need and aren’t as fortunate as some of us. So to be able to have an impact like that is cool. It supports the ECHO Foundation, which you can check out at echotally.org and see what it’s all about. I think we raised close to $60K, so that’s really good and we are thankful for everyone’s support. FLMX: How are the kids and wife? Another MX star in the future? RC: Family is great man. We are just doing are deal. Not too sure about any moto plans for their future. FLMX: What do you remember about growing up and racing at Dade City? Will we ever see you come back for a night, back to your roots? RC: It’s been a long time but I just think about all the times I pissed off Randy Yoho and all the fun I used to have with everyone there. It was a great experience and I will never forget those times. It would be great to make it back there some day. FLMX: You have made a lot of your dreams a reality. What do you think the future has in store for you? RC: Man, I have been extremely lucky and have a great life. I just want to keep doing what I’m doing and keep making a positive impact. FLMX: Thanks RC, good luck with everything. Who would you like to thank and any parting words? RC: Thank you, and thanks to all my fans and supporters.

2013 FLORIDA GOLD CUP SERIES ROUND 1 GATORBACK GAINESVILLE, FL

MAY MASTERS GATORBACK SIX12 RACETECH RACE REPORT

PICS BY: ROB KOY

The 2013 Florida Gold Cup Series, presented by VP Fuels, kicked off at the Gatorback Cycle Park on September 28th and 29th. Saturday would hold a all day practice with ½ the day being held on the MX track and then the other ½ on the newly Mark Burnett built SX Track. The SX Track was a huge hit as hundreds of riders got some great practice in for the up and coming Mini Olympic race in November. The weather would hold a lot of sunshine and a little bit of rain, and one long Sunday with the amount of riders and races to fit it. Team Green Kawasaki’s Earl May would come out swinging in the Plus classes taking home 3 overall wins! May took the Plus 35, 40 and 45 class wins over Steve Dumond in the 40 and 45. Kevin Cozadd was 3rd in the Plus 40 and James Nagy rounded out the podium in the Plus 45. In the Plus 35 Hector Lopez was 2nd and Mike Patton was third on his PTS/SIX12 Kawasaki. Matt Johnson came out to do some racing in the Plus 25 and Plus 30 classes and would win both of the overalls on his Kawasaki. Scott Witt was the fastest Plus 50 rider as he took the overall win on his KTM. The A and Pro Classes would see RJ Hampshire and the Chisholm brothers doing battle for the wins. Cody and Kyle Chisholm would both race, as Cody was flying this day on his FOX/Jacksonville Powersports Kawasaki. Chisholm would take the overall in the 250 Pro class over Hampshire and finish up 3rd in 250 A after a DNF and a win. Hampshire would take the W in 250 A. In the 450 Pro class it was Kyle Chisholm and Hampshire doing battle along with Luke Renzland. Chisholm, who is coming back from injury was looking for some extra practice and looked good but isn’t that strong yet and would settle for 2nd as Hampshire cruised to another win! Alexander Frye took his KTM to the win in Schoolboy 1, Schoolboy 2 and 250 Open. Frye is riding extremely good and was almost unstoppable all day. Keith Tucker, Felix Lopez and Tristan Charboneau would finish up 2nd to Frye. Tucker was able to snag the
