CROSSFIT’S
DIRTY LITTLE SECRET KIRK LAYFIELD N.D. M.S. EMT-P info source: Eric Robertson, PT
Without a doubt you have heard of the cross fit craze right? And possibly even given it a try? Being in the fitness business and writing and consulting in several different capacities in the fitness and nutrition industry I like to think of myself as a guanine pig of sorts to pretty much anything that comes along. Although there are many things I like about cross fit there are few I would suggest looking out for and or modifying to help prevent injury. This month we will take a look at Crossfit’s dirty little secret called Rhabdomyolysis. Please allow me to introduce you to Uncle Rhabdo, CrossFit’s unofficial and disturbing mascot. Uncle Rhabdo is a cartoon commonly referenced in CrossFit literature and representative of a troubling trend among CrossFitters. He’s a clown. Literally. The “Uncle Rhabdo” cartoon depicts an exhausted, yet wellmuscled clown, connected to a dialysis machine standing next to some workout equipment. Concernedly, his kidney has fallen out and lies on the floor underneath him, along with some portion of his bowel. He’s left a pool of blood on the floor below him, but it’s not clear if this is from the disembowelment, the kidney’s arterial supply, or the collection of fasciotomies he appears to have endured. Uncle Rhabdo, of course, has Rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis, apart from being a subtly pleasant and melodic sounding word, is an uncool, serious and potentially fatal condition resulting from the catastrophic breakdown of muscle cells.
Rhabdomyolysis: As Told By CrossFit?
A quick search of the Interwebs reveals copious amounts of information about rhabdo purveyed by none other than CrossFit trainers. Scouring the scientific literature in mainstream medical journals, however, reveals an only a few peer-reviewed papers. The science confirms that exertional rhabdomyolysis, as this form is sometimes referred to,
12
FLMX MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2013
is uncommon and normally reserved for the elite military trainee, ultraendurance monsters, and for victims of the occasional psychotic football coach. Rhabdomyolysis isn’t a common condition, yet it’s so commonly encountered in CrossFit that they have it, nonchalantly casting humor on something that should never happen. So what is rhabdomyolysis exactly? Under extreme conditions your muscles cells explode. They die. They leach protein out into the blood stream, including one form called myoglobin. Ever stalwart, your kidneys take up the job of clearing these dangerous proteins from the blood. Why? It’s just what they do. Unfortunately, myoglobin proteins aren’t designed to be in the blood in the first place and they can easily overload the kidney. This can produce injury or death to all or part of the kidney in a short amount of time, and is potentially lethal. Locally, the muscles are left damaged and dying. Swelling ensues and weakness occurs as pressure builds around the remaining muscle cells. Your body’s systems that normally can assist with this local muscle damage are now offline trying to help you not die. If you get to this stage, you’re in serious trouble. In some cases, acute compartment syndrome ensues, which is an emergency condition that can result in loss of a limb unless your connective tissue is slashed open to release the swelling, a procedure called a fasciotomy. None of this is something that people should be handling in such a cavalier manner.
The Impact of Rhabdomyolysis
Sometimes rhabdomyolysis gets better with treatment. Sometimes it lingers. Sometimes your kidneys are never the same again. Crossfitters, largely unaware of the rhabdo risk, will continue to charge ahead, pressured and happily coerced into exercising to depletion and exhaustion. My prediction: in a few years, the peer-reviewed scientific literature will be ripe with articles about CrossFit and Rhabdomyolysis. Health providers will be there to scoop up the pieces, but who is there to protect those people unknowingly at risk? Exercise is just about the best thing you can do for your body, but in the case of Crossfit, we’re left to ponder the question, is this workout worth the risk? Can the culture adapt to one that embraces safe training principles? Do coaches truly have the ability to detect what a proper training load is for their athletes? Only time will tell, but the future of CrossFit may depend on it. In conclusion, please be smart about your exercise program no matter what you do, seek expert advice from degreed exercise physiologist or physical therapist with experience and education in Cross Fit to help you understand what your limits may be. That’s it for this month; please visit www.innovationtrainingsystems.com for all your fitness and nutrition needs. See you at the Mini O’s!

TEXT BY: RONNIE MONK PICS BY: ROB KOY / KOY PHOTO FLMX: Cody Chisholm, being friends with your brother I have watched you grow up at the MX races. Do you ever remember not being at the races? CODY CHISHOLM: Not really! My brother started racing when I was little so I was at the track all the time. FLMX: Did you always want to ride also? How old were you when you started riding? CHIZ: You know I don’t really know. When I was little I think I just did it cause my brother did but once I got to my later years on the supermini is when I really wanted to start riding. Most people you ask that knew me when I was little probably thought I would be a professional golfer because I always carried around a set of clubs at the track. Not sure what really happened to that because I am not good at all at golf. The first time I rode a motorcycle was when I was 5 years old. I started on a little Yamaha 50. FLMX: Can you give us some background information on you and your family, how y’all got into riding and what’s it like living the MX lifestyle? CHIZ: Well my dad rode when he was younger and raced at the local tracks. He couldn’t do it competitively because he had to work to make the money to go ride. Then my brother started racing and then it kind of just followed on to me. Living the MX style is pretty fun! I was never home-schooled growing up so I didn’t get to go practice very much at different tracks. Now that I’m graduated I get to go ride all the time so it’s really fun. Going to a track for the weekend and then leaving Sunday to come home and then do it all over again the next weekend is usually the routine unless there are no races going on. But it’s fun getting to go see all your friends at the track and hangout. FLMX: What’s your biggest accomplishment in racing and what are your goals moving forward?
14
FLMX MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2013
CHIZ: Well like I said before growing up I was never home-schooled so I didn’t get to ride much. So I was never usually that top guy at the races. I have gotten top 5 and top 10 at Loretta Lynn’s every year so I am pretty happy about that. I feel like I’ve really picked up speed in the last year and hope to go in to the Mini O’s this year as a threat in the A and Pro classes. I feel like my speed is there to win, I just need to put everything together on race day. I just need to get a good start and ride like I know how to! FLMX: How is your brother Kyle doing? What are his plans for 2014? CHIZ: He’s doing better now! He’s been back riding for a couple months now and just trying to get back up to speed. He is going to be racing some of the German SX races and is still looking for a ride for the AMA SX and MX series. FLMX: What are your plans for 2014? Any idea if you want to make a jump to the Pros? CHIZ: I haven’t really decided yet completely. I was hoping to try to do the outdoors this year but want to try and land a ride on a team first. I just need to get some results this year and hopefully get a pro contract. FLMX: What do you like to do when you’re not racing?

18 FLMX MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2013
CHIZ: I really like to fish, skim, surf, and just hangout with friends. FLMX: How’s the boat and fishing been treating you? CHIZ: They’ve been treating me pretty good! With the weather starting to cool down a little bit, it’s making the fishing start to get good! I’ve got a kingfish tournament coming up soon so looking forward to that! If you want to see the fish I catch just go check out my instagram because I post them all on to there. FLMX: What’s a normal week like for you with riding, school, training and racing? CHIZ: I don’t have a set training schedule really. I’m done with school so that’s not in my schedule anymore. I ride just when other people are riding. I’m friends with most of the people that have tracks around me so when they tell me that they’re riding that’s when I go ride. I don’t have a schedule at the gym either. The week is usually 3 out of the 5 days at the gym, practice one of the days on the weekends and usually fish on the other day. But I never sit around I skim for hours almost everyday so that’s a lot of running. FLMX: Good luck at Mini Os and in 2014. Who would you like to thank? CHIZ: Thanks! I’d like to thank Jacksonville Powersports, Fox, Pro Circuit, Stellar, FLMX, Renthal, Twin Air, Dunlop, and Leatt Neckbraces.

2013 FLORIDA GOLD CUP SERIES ROUND 4 DADE CITY MX OCTOBER 19, 2013
DADE CITY GETS A MAKEOVER SIX12 RACETECH RACE REPORT
The 4th Round of the 2013 Florida Gold Cup Series traveled to Central FL to the infamous Dade City MX Track. Notorious for its Saturday night series, producing the fastest riders in the country, and a sandy back track, which made it one of the roughest races of the year. Well say good bye to the sand, Randy Yoho came in and put down hard clay throughout the entire back track (Except for the sand whoops). The turns were so hard, that the corners would stay flat all day, simply un heard of at DCMX. A great turnout filled the starting lines as the riders closed in on the final round of the series. Colton Trouille and Moon Gerrits would battle it out in the 50 (4-6) class, with the Georgia rider of Trouille coming out on top. The SIX12Racetech Cobra rider of Aspen Boothby would take the win over the KTM of Moon Gerrits in the 50 (4-8) and Trouille finishing up 3rd. Kyle Barfield took his KTM to the win in the (7-8) class. In the 65 classes Cody Russell would beat out Barfield and Boothby for the win in the (7-9). Jackson Kinney took the (7-11) win over Russell and Renner. Cole Bradford took the (10-11) and the PTS/SIX12 KTM rider of Chase Patton won the Beginner division. Cullin Park was the man to beat in the 85cc classes on his Stellar Graphics Yamaha. Park took the win over the SIX12/Motorcycle Enthusiasts KTM Seth Brown and Cole Bradford in the (9-11) division. Park then backed it up in the Jr Mini class over Logan Boye and Seth Brown. In the (12-15) class it was SIX12/Alias Suzuki rider of Kyle Cheesman taking the win over Imoto Suzukis Darby Harrison and Justin Maloy. Logan Boye won the (12-13) class over Freeman and Cambers. Perry Warren and William Klee split the Supermini divisions. Tommy Maxey came down from Georgia to take the win in Schoolboy 1, Bodie Colangelo would win the 250 Pro class, Jesse Freeman took the

250 A class win. In the 250 B Tristan Lane beat out Nichola Guessford and Evan Walker. Guessford would come back for the win in 250 Open. SMITH SMOKES
GATORBACK SIX12 RACETECH RACE REPORT
The final round of the Florida Gold Cup Series was back at Gainesville on the last weekend of October. This would also mark the final time riders could ride the MX and SX track before Mini O’s. This was by far the biggest round of the series, as riders from all over the country made the trek to Florida to get any final preparation for the National. Saturday would be an entire day of practice, with the first half dedicated to MX and the second half to SX. Sunday was all about racing though. Hundreds of riders filled up classes for great racing all day long. A little bit of a fog delay would start the morning off slow, but after that it was race time! Jordon Smith, of the Amsoil/Geico Honda team came down from MTF and looked flawless in the A/Pro divisions. Smith would win the 250 A, 450 A and 450 Pro. The only class he didn’t win was 250 Pro, he won the first moto, but didn’t compete in the final moto. Smith had some serious contenders also, coming from Luke Renzland, who won 250 Pro, Gannon Audette and Dakota Alix,. Smith looked great and will be a serious contender to win everything at Mini Os. Thomas Welch was the man to beat in the 50cc classes. Welch won the (4-8) and (7-8) classes over Hudson, Boothby and Smith. Gage Linville made easy work of the 65cc classes by winning the younger 7-9 and then the 7-11 after they combined the classes. Jack Rogers took the win in the (10-11) class and PTS/SIX12 KTM rider of Chase Patton easily took the Beginner win. Jarret Frye has been taking serious notes from his older brother, as Frye took 2 overall wins in the 85cc classes. Frye won the (9-11) over Masterpool and Jarvis. Then in the Jr Mini he took the win over Hastings and Gonzalez. Jordan Bailey, on his WMR KTM took the win over Mitchell in the (12-13). Ramyller Alves was the fastest Supermini rider, taking both Supermini 1 and 2 wins on his Suzuki.

Locurcio, Burnett, and Castelo were some of the riders who were battling for the win with Harrison. Bryce Mauldin took the win in the full gate 250 C class on his KTM. Matt Johnsons and Pedro Gonzalez both took 2 overall wins in the Plus classes. Johnson won the 25 and 30 plus. Gonzalez took the 40 and 45 plus. Hannah Hodges was the top Woman on the day, cruising to easy wins on her TLD Suzuki.
