Editorial “The Flooring Show must inform and inspire the entire flooring market!” Ian Harper, manager at Media Generation Group (joint owner of The Flooring Show)

In early September, the Flooring Show took place at Harrogate in northern England. This UK floor covering show celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, months after it came under new ownership at the start of 2012. The new owners have every confidence in the future of the show and are investing significantly in its development. We spoke to Ian Harper, a director of Media Generation Group, one of the joint owners, about the show and the UK floor market. “The Flooring Show is the UK’s only event dedicated to flooring, but is currently focused mainly on the retail/domestic sector. One of our main priorities is to rebalance it so that it is also the UK’s main event for commercial flooring as used in a wide range of public and private sector facilities, such as hospitals, schools, sports centres, offices, hotels etc. In 2013, alongside a dedicated commercial exhibition there will be a dedicated 2-day commercial flooring conference. We also plan to add a strong design dimension and to develop the retail/domestic side. In 2012 Laura Casey, an interior designer, developed several concepts to illustrate the influence of different types of flooring in interior design. In 2013 there will be a dedicated design zone and we will highlight future trends. So, our overall strategy is to develop and expand the show so that it is the top UK event for the commercial flooring market and for the retail/domestic market. What’s the project market in Great Britain like at the moment? The recession is having an impact on the public sector, but there is still plenty of activity, for example in healthcare and education. The commercial sector is doing well with new projects across a broad range of sectors including elderly care, retail, sports, office and hotels. For example, there’s the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and a number of planned retail openings including Land Securities’ Trinity Leeds development in March 2013. There’s also a growth in the amount of refurbishment taking place across all sectors. What about the development of the various floor segments in your country? The vinyl market has done well because it is quicker, cheaper and easier to lay than ceramic, but the demand is increasingly for added value such as, for example, vinyl floors which are slip-resistant. As for laminate, there seems to be growing interest which figures from the EPLF bear that out. Wooden floors only have a small share of the project market, but that seems to be stable. Carpet, traditionally very popular in the UK, also has a stable position with carpet tiles proving popular. The demand for LVT has increased as a result of a shift to quality rather than a cheap fix as people want better value for money. Editing & advertisements

DBcover Solutions Most subfloors on offer from dB Cover Solutions are suitable for floor heating, but, in addition, the company has also developed subfloors with higher than normal heat conduction, which are designed specifically for floor heating. Aluminium, HD2, HD3, and vinyl are excellent conductors of warmth. The thickness is such that the thermal resistance remains limited. Moreover, the materials used allow for a perfect (constant) performance with temperatures above 60°C. The respective thicknesses are as follows: dBCover®Aluminium = 2.1mm, dBCover®HD2 = 2.0mm, dBCover®HD3 = 3.0mm, and dBCover®Vinyl = 1.5mm. These subfloors have respective densities of 300kg/m³, 800kg/m³, 800kg/m³, and 900kg/m³. The respective heat resistance figures are 0.026m²k/W, 0.045m²k/W, 0.060m²k/W, and 0.036m²k/W.

Pallmann The new 1K and 2K wood floor lacquer – Pall-X Extreme An “extreme double-act” covers every option in sealing heavily trafficked wood floors. Würzburg, October 2012 – The new wood floor lacquer from Pallmann, Pall-X Extreme is extremely versatile, finding use in a range of areas from living spaces to retail floors. Owing to new Pallmann Variotec Technology the floor can be sealed using the product as a single component solution for heavy use, or as part of a two component application suitable for areas which are exposed to very heavy usage. The wood floor is sealed and protected against mechanical and chemical exposure. The water-based wood floor lacquer Pall-X Extreme can be applied as single or two component system to all floor areas with expected high to very high traffic and abrasion. Quality is the trump Rheingold focuses on high quality HPL coating for steps

In 1997, Rheingold GmbH applied for a patent for a completely innovative system for the renovation of old steps in postforming technology. Production started in 1998 with a Taber abrasion value of AC3 (approx. 2000 rotations) at the time. However, from year to year, the technical requirements increased, as particularly in the property business and public buildings higher abrasion values were required. Coatings, manufactured on CPL plants could not fulfil the company requirements. In collaboration with Resopal, Rheingold GmbH started to develop stair treads on a HPL basis. In 2009, the first stair renovation treads were able to be produced on this basis. After further optimisations, today, Rheingold can safely produce stair treads with an abrasion value significantly above the minimum requirement of AC5 (= 6,000 rotations). The considerable differences between CPL and HPL are the forming pressure and pressing duration.

The hardwood floors of Café Stecher, a well-known café in Pforzheim Germany, were refurbished. The owner decided to grant the project to LOBA who once again proved the effectiveness of its solutions: in this case, the timesaving methods of surface finishing using mobile UV units. The complete refurbishing was finished overnight without any loss of sales revenues…The company Gundlach from Keltern was responsible for the sanding and finishing of the 200 m² hardwood floors (maple industrial parquet and oak planks laid lengthwise) using the innovative UV finish LOBACURE WS Rush A.T. The waterborne UV finish is applied using standard methods and has exceptional scratch resistance, offers great elasticity and is resistant to chemicals. Right after the curing process (also done overnight by LOBA, with powerful Floormate UV-curing unit from Dutch manufacturer DecoRad), the floors reached full hardness for normal use and could be walked on immediately. The high mass of the floor industry Initially, we found it strange, but now we understand. When we were editing the various files and subjects for this edition of Floor Forum International, we had no difficulty in obtaining information from the companies concerned, as is always the case. However, when we asked them about their forthcoming innovations or new products as part of our research for those specific files and subjects, the atmosphere changed. Suddenly, everyone became tight lipped. Naturally, Domotex Hannover 2013 was the culprit here. Anyone exhibiting at this ‘fair of fairs’ likes to unveil its novelties from nowhere. That’s the way things are and always have been! This article looks back on the previous Domotex and, of course, ahead to the next one. What will Domotex 2013 throw up? The organisers are preparing for over 1400 exhibitors from 60 countries. They will unveil their latest collections in Hannover to masses of visitors from over 80 countries. Since 90% of visitors to Domotex are buyers and decision makers or architects, designers, and other professionals, this fair is once again a must for everyone concerned. Professionals certainly don’t want to miss this appointment: no other show gives such an exhaustive summary of new products as Domotex. It is an ideal opportunity to contact new and existing business relations and gives visitors all the latest information about new trends, products, and systems. Everyone can learn something about the various topics covered in conferences, lectures, and seminars.

Floor Forum International 57

Wooden floors under the spotlight According to the German Federal Office of Statistics, sales of wooden floors for use in homes have risen by no less than 28.1% since 2005. The growing ‘conquest’ of the flooring market by wooden floors is partly due to the ageless beauty of parquet, but also the versatility of this classic material. Domotex 2013 is paying more attention to wood than ever before.

8

Exclusive Wooden floors with an out-of-the-ordinary look are very popular, particularly among young, fashion conscious consumers. We see another striking trend in floors with a so called vintage look, materials telling their own story and reflecting their origins as living beings. Another trend can be found in wooden floors in varied lengths, either in their original organic form or with striking wood grains, which are highlighted using new techniques. Traditionally versatile In the world of wood people have always paid attention to, and expressed a preference for, tradition. The ongoing success of traditional parquet floors are proof of that. This is perfectly understandable since wood is the only material which can be combined

with lots of different interior styles. Thanks to its varied sorts and finishes, wood has the power to evoke a flood of spheres, ranging from simple and rustic over timelessly elegant to ‘funky’ and modern. At the same time, wood naturally exudes a relaxed atmosphere. Ecological alternatives Wood is, of course, a renewable raw material. However, in this category, Domotex 2013 will also be paying attention to some other ecological materials such as bamboo and cork, which are certainly gaining ground. A strong argument in favour of cork is the fact that the tree does not have to be cut. Only the cork itself is extracted and then the tree has 10 years to grow back. Bamboo has the advantage that it grows rapidly. These materials are attractive for more than ecological reasons. Cork is soft and elastic, warm, and easy to clean. It has a naturally attractive look, just like bamboo, which also has some exceptional mechanical qualities. Halls 8 and 9 Never before has Domotex paid so much attention to these materials. The timeless appearance of the natural material that wood is appears in an endless range of floor solutions which will be on show in Halls 8 and Hall 9. We look forward to meeting you at the Floor Forum International booth! As regular visitors to Domotex know, the Floor Forum International booth is the ideal place to take a short break and relax. For the eleventh consecutive show, we will be welcoming our clients, readers, and other interested parties. And so, if you want a short break from the new collections of floors and accessories, come and join us for an informal chat and a drink. You can familiarise yourself with our various publications and we can look ahead together to 2013. You will find our new Lounge Booth in Hall 7, E 44. We’ll see you there!

New for 2013 Adesiv proposes a range of natural colored oils in line with the current trends in Northern European markets on which the company aims to expand.

Adesiv

Basin Basin is undoubtedly at the top when it comes to innovative, reliable, effective, fashionable, and waterborne products. These products always meet European standards. Its extensive range of products is often copied, but seldom equalled. The company is presenting the following products during Domotex 2013: • The parquet glue STP 0850 (hybrid polymer with silane finish) which can be applied with or without the revolutionary Basibond tool (which will also be demonstrated). • The invisible treatments No-Visible! The latest new and equally amazing products: • Antico gives new wood an aged appearance. • Unik is a coloured oil which really is ‘unique’ on the market and which is also virtually VOC-free. • Unik Soap protects, treats, and maintains oiled parquet floors all in one. • Waterborne varnish for glazing. • Waterborne MSP colours. • Neutraliser provides a preparatory coat to reinforce the effect of No-Visible or the required shade. • Varnish with UV setting to finish parquet floors in record time.

The Italian company Adesiv will be present at the Domotex 2013 in Hannover with the usual twinning with the German company FG manufacturer of sanding machines. This will be the 10th edition on which Adesiv participates obtaining always interest in their products, which thanks to the good quality / price ratio and the respectful attention to the environment are now known and sold in 40 countries around the world. Bassano Parquet Srl Bassano Parquet is taking part at the Hannover this year as well to present not just its “classical” production but also some really interesting new products that will undoubtedly arouse the interest of wood lovers. The two new varieties, “Lava Oak” and “Miami Oak”, are the perfect balance between tradition and modern technology. The only ones of their kind, they are considered “vintage” floors with a strong personality that adapts excellently to all settings – from modern to rustic. Their “well worn” look, thanks to the particular treatments and finishes, blends in perfectly with modern furnishings in steel or aluminium to create a perfect contrast and make the living space truly elegant. It goes without saying of course that these new varieties have a green soul - the norm for company philosophy. The company only uses timber from certified forests, eco-friendly glues, natural oils and waterbased varnishes for a completely eco-sustainable production cycle. Company visit Forestry Timber Export (RI)

A visit to the home of Woodline Parquetry, Timbertop, Floor Art & Elyseum Fertigparkett in Sumatra A traditional finish with western quality Fabulous and good quality parquet floors don’t come solely from Europe. The products of these 4 brands prove that. In their production plant in Medan on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the company produces four to five million square metres of parquet each year in line with western quality standards and with a traditional finish. We visited the site in Medan. 10 Hectares of company premises Medan is the heart of the timber industry on the island of Sumatra. There we find two large production units and a total of 40 dry kilns on company premises of 10 hectares. This factory once produced furniture parts, but since the 1990s it has been used to produce parquet floors. All together, about 1500 people work there in a two-shift system. Those labourers enjoy excellent working conditions. They receive a respectable salary and suitable training and the owners of this private company have set up an extensive social security policy for employees and their families. Quality along western lines For many years now, people have been looking to Woodline Parquetry, Timbertop, Floor Art and Elyseum for attractive, highquality parquet floors which are recognised all over the world for their quality. They certainly do not want their products compared to typical low-end factory products, which come from some Chinese factories, amongst others. The region of Medan is known for its timber industry and the locals are experts in this field. They combine that tradition and knowledge with western know-how and technology to produce a range of top quality floors. Akzo Nobel supplies the adhesives used to glue the sections of the three-layer wood-engineered parquet, while the finishing products come from the German specialist Klumpp. Austrian specialist Wintersteiger has recently provided new wood processing sawing machines.

Local The three-layer wood-engineered parquet floors on a hevea core are a highly ecological alternative to the plywood bases used for most traditional multi-layer floors. The fact is that Sumatra has numerous rubber plantations and the hevea wood for the bottom layer can simply be purchased from local plantations as a recuperation (recovery could be a better word?) material. (Hevea brasiliensis) first yields natural rubber for 25 to 30 years and when that supply is exhausted, the trees are cut down for parquet or furniture use. And so, it is clear that using hevea for parquet means a real blessing because otherwise very little wood is reused and a great deal of it ends up as firewood. No other sort of wood is as ecological as hevea, but hevea is also a superior base for a stable three-layer wood-engineered parquet. It has similar density to Oak and has extremely good radial and tangential shrinkage properties. Therefore shows very little capacity to shrink or warp. Hevea offers good dimensional stability to the final product. Since the hevea wood and the wood for the top layer dry at the same location, both layers have an identical humidity level, and that’s ideal for the stability of the woodengineered parquet floor.

Floor Forum International 57

Hevea To produce its floors, the company deploys noble wood from its own country or imports noble wood blocks from Europe and South America. They still produce a few solid wood floors, but

the vast majority of the production is concentrated on three-layer wood-engineered parquet floors. These floors all use a hevea rubber core and have a finish according to choice, often oak, but various tropical wood sorts are also possible. Although other alternatives are also possible, for example pine core ,or products from their popular Tri-Layer range. Noble wood from Europe, North America, South America, African, Australian and Tropical species. (Don’t know if you want to add it in here or at the back.)

Leading collection of distressed floors The spearhead of the current range is the new collection of distressed floors, which stand out due to their beauty and at the same time are both diverse and complete. Woodline Parquetry, Timbertop, Floor Art and Elyseum are not the first company with a collection of distressed floors, but in recent years they have worked hard on a range of distressed floors which are now rated amongst the very best. The floors are processed manually to produce a highly authentic unique collection. No 2 boards are the same like custom made floors. There are various processes and colours available: brushed, (semi-) smoked, handscraped, rounded edges, tool marks, or nail marks. There is a very wide choice of oak floors, but also a choice of ash and smoked merbau or iroko. Apart from its existing extensive range, they have just launched its new Castle Collection as well as expanded their Antique Collection with new items consisting of various trendy colours and styles. The sizes vary from 145 to 290mm in width with top layers of 3.5 and 6mm and lengths of up to 245cm. The floors are finished with an extra matt oil or varnish according to choice.

Company visit Forestry Timber Export (RI)

Global distribution The company processes the floors in line with European standards and fits them with a 5G click system from Välinge or a traditional tongue and groove connection. This results in a quality floor which is appreciated all over the world. Woodline Parquetry, Timbertop, Floor Art and Elyseum are market leaders in many countries all over the world. However, Europe is an extremely successful market and the company’s strong position in the Scandinavian countries also proves that its floors can withstand the unforgiving local climate. Traders and consumers on Western European (sorry were you trying to refer to Eastern Europe as in Russia etc?) market are also showing more and more appreciation for these products. The strong position in various countries and in several continents also enables them to keep an eye on new trends. Moreover, the company has a very extensive range of floors to meet just about any possible requirement.

Bau 2013 deals with current themes Sustainability will be the main theme during the forthcoming Bau trade fair in Munich. How could it be otherwise? It is now the world’s most popular and most debated subject. Wood certainly scores very well in this respect. People tend to regard wood as a sustainable material, provided it comes from sustainably managed forests. Below we outline the main themes of the Bau trade fair from 14 to 19 January 2013. Everything revolves around ecological aspects such as sustainability, energy, futuristic spatial planning, and such like.

Sustainability Let’s be quite clear about this: sustainability or durability has been the most hotly debated subjected in recent years. And so, this subject dominates all themes and sectors at Bau 2013. Furthermore, any institution connected in any way with this theme will also play a part at the fair: the Federal Ministry of Transport, the BMVBS (Construction and Urban Development), the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), the ‘Frauhofer Building Innovation Alliance, and the ‘Ift Rosenheim’ are working in close collaboration with Bau 2013 and will contribute in various conferences and shows. A lot has happened in the field of sustainability and sustainable materials in recent years. People are now fully aware that the lifespan of materials has to be assessed from extraction to the time of dismantling (cradle to cradle). They now also realise that sustainability has both ecological and economic and socio-cultural implications. At all events, wood enjoys a favoured position in this sustainability debate. As a sustainable and renewable raw material, wood can expect a prosperous future. Energy 2.0 It goes without saying that new energy technology will be on show at the fair. The emergence of renewable energy and the combination of fossil and renewable energy sources are certainly issues here. Energy saving and efficiency are inextricably intertwined. It is surely the first time in history that home owners themselves are saving energy, consuming energy thoughtfully, considering insulation, and such like, whereas they once left these matters to the so called directly involved: energy suppliers, politicians, insulation suppliers, and such like. Bau 2013 will give extensive coverage to the issues of how to treat energy and how to build.

Urban planning Half of the world’s population lives in urban settings. Forecasts suggest that by 2050 no less than 75% of all people will live in cities. Naturally, Bau 2013 will be considering how this has to be developed further in the future. There is already evidence to suggest that an urban society does have advantages, certainly from an energy-saving perspective. A good 40% of all energy is consumed in homes. About 75% of that is used for heating, whilst lighting, cooling, domestic appliances, communication, and such like account for the rest. All indications suggest that an ‘integrated city’ where houses consume energy in an efficient manner is the future. Bau 2013 will also consider some solutions to tackle these challenges. Wood at Bau 2013 Hall B5 will be devoted entirely to wood and plastic used for building. Hall B6 is set aside again for floors, so laminate and parquet will attract attention, as will ‘sustainable building materials’. Producer Egger has already said it will be adopting a completely new approach to the fair. They will display all wood-based materials with innovative applications. Egger has abandoned its traditional fair stand and will be launching a House of Solutions. Below you will find a summary from a number of exhibitors at Domotex, who provided us with information on time: Balterio “Balterio, a division of Spanolux is participating to Bau Munich in January 2013. The company will present its latest novelties in design and quality laminate flooring as well as new POS materials. Visit us in Hall B6 – stand 408.”

Special Producers and distributors of bamboo and palm floors

A selection of high quality importers and distributors of bamboo floors in Europe ! Harder than oak and just as pretty Bamboo has not been on the market all that long in our part of the world. By contrast, in many Asian countries, notably China, bamboo has been a top raw material for centuries for building and interior applications. Its mass presence in China and the rapid growth which that country has experienced are certainly two of the main reasons for this. China has plantations from six to nine million hectares, which have been in use for centuries. Not only can you use bamboo for building, but you can also eat it and, in China, they even brew beer with it. For some time now, people have also used bamboo to make textiles. This article, of course, deals with bamboo floors, namely bamboo parquet, if we’re allowed to use the expression? forests ‘managed’ and exploited in line with a sophisticated scheme and management plan. This makes bamboo even more ecological simply as a raw material.

Sustainable building material When we talk about ‘sustainable building’, we usually mean building with durable, renewable, or, at least, recyclable building materials. Wood is certainly such a material. It is renewable and trees in so called ‘sustainably managed forests’ are cut down only as part of a management plan. In most cases, forest managers plant a new tree for each one which is cut down. Now, this generation is unlikely to extract new ‘raw material’ from that new tree, but if our children start building, the tree will be there for them. Bamboo does a lot better! Whilst most trees, depending on their sort, need 30, 60, or 100 years to mature for cutting, bamboo is extracted every six years. If we extract 20% of a bamboo forest each year, the forest is restored within 12 months. Bamboo is a raw material which renews itself easily. Some people call it a ‘saurian’ because it has survived all the known ‘ages’ on this planet. However, we now see bamboo

Bamboo floor or parquet This editor has incurred the wrath of the parquet federation on more than one occasion for using the expression ‘veneer parquet’. This simply isn’t the done thing, since the European standard stipulates that a floor can only be a ‘parquet floor’ if it has a solid wood top layer of at least 2mm in a noble sort of wood. Veneer floors have a top layer of 0.6mm, so they don’t qualify for the name ‘parquet’. So far, so good! However, the editor’s intention was to keep things simple for everyone. If you put all floors into one category where wood or a wood related product is included, it makes it much easier for the end users: parquet (simply the noblest of all floors), multi-layer parquet (somewhat less noble), and veneer parquet (with a top layer of 0.6mm). However, the fact is that the parquet federation has got the law on its side (i.e. they are on solid ground). We respect that, but, yes, there is a but! Just about all sellers of bamboo floors call their products ‘bamboo parquet’. What do we say to that? Bamboo floors are available in solid wood and multi-layer with top layers which can be as much as 6 to 8mm. And so, they exceed the 2mm rule with plenty to spare, but bamboo isn’t a wood at all. It is, and remains, a sort of grass. And so, watch this space! Intrinsic qualities It is interesting to know that the filament of the very first light bulb invented by Thomas Alva Edison was made from bamboo. This shows that bamboo has some very impressive mechanical

including that of wood and even that of construction industry steel. Wood fibres have a tensile strength of 5kp/mm², whilst the figure for steel fibres is 37kp/mm². With this tensile strength bamboo is still pliable, light, and flexible. Bamboo has a dimensional stability of 0.0144, so it is over twice as stable as most sorts of wood used in the floor industry. The index of swelling and shrinking as a result of differences in temperature is very low. Since bamboo is much less sensitive to fluctuations in temperature, it is perfectly possible to use it in combination with floor heating. Floor sorts There are just as many sorts (types) of bamboo floors as there are wooden floors. In order to make bamboo floors, you first have to make panels from which those floors can be made. Bamboo panels are made from ripples of bamboo, which are glued to each other horizontally (plain pressed) or vertically (side pressed) and under pressure. Naturally, the end result is a solid block of bamboo. The wooden panel obtained in this way is comparable to a solid wood plank with the exceptional mechanical properties outlined above. The floorboards are made from that plank. As we have already said, there are just as many bamboo floors as there are wooden floors. As is the case with parquet, we find solid wood bamboo floors in the shape of planks, strips, traditional parquet sections, or end grain blocks. Multi-layer floors such as the duo plank (two-layer), the country house

General fitting tips You fit bamboo floors in the same way as wooden floors, depending on the type of floor (floating, glued, nailed, or a combination). If you are going to glue a bamboo floor, manufacturers advise you to check the suitability of the glue. For example, you must not use emulsion adhesives or alcohol-based glues. Dual component glues or polymer glues are the ones usually recommended. If you are going to fit a bamboo floor floating, you should ask for information about the components of the bottom layer because some components are not compatible with bamboo. For bamboo, too, it is advisable to store the floorboards at the fitting location for a few days so that the bamboo can acclimatise to the conditions. In the bathroom? Although bamboo has very good mechanical properties, the long cellulose fibres from which the material is constructed make it sensitive to climatological changes. If you wish to fit bamboo in the bathroom, it is best to opt for a sufficiently thick multi-layer floorboard. If you buy ‘pre-finished’ floorboards, you need to check to see if it has a coat of varnish. Then, all you need to do is apply extra varnish where the floorboards have been sawn.

Floor heating? You can combine bamboo floors and conventional floor heating systems (dry and damp floor heating) with no problem at all, but, of course, you need to maintain a low temperature at all times (maximum 27°C). This, too, is the result of the material’s mechanical and physical properties. After all, bamboo is a perfect conductor of water. It also allows the heat to pass easily (R=0.072k/w). Bamboo is less sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and certainly the multi-layer structure guarantees very high stability. As is the case with wooden floors, it is important to take account of certain rules both before and during the fitting of the parquet, as well as afterwards when the floor is eventually used. Coconut palm and black palm Whilst bamboo is used extremely widely, there are other hard materials in the forest which are used for floor covering, but which still fit into a niche. For example, exceptionally hard floors are made from the wood which is extracted from the hard layer located between the core and the exterior of the coconut palm. In contrast to the vast range of possibilities with bamboo, there are only two main designs in coconut parquet, namely traditional parquet and solid wood planks. Another alternative to bamboo is the iriartea deltoidea, an uncommon black palm sort from Ecuador, the only place where that palm sort has ever been found. This palm grows mainly in the damp pastures where it can reach a height of up to 30m and a diameter of 25 to 30cm. This palm, too, yields a hardness to rival tropical wood.

Bamboo Touch According to Bamboo Touch, bamboo sales are stagnating. This is not due to a fall in demand, but rather the emergence of very cheap products. People tend to be a little sceptical towards bamboo and are sometimes disappointed. Current trends are for very light shades or white designs. According to Bamboo Touch, consumers are not really aware of the ecological arguments and are motivated by the price. Strictly speaking, bamboo is quite expensive if you want a good product. The latest innovations are bamboo floors on HDF with a click system and coloured bamboo floors. Bambeau®/Becker & Grossgarten Gmbh

Since 1994 we work with the raw material bamboo and employ it for modern interior design applications. Lalegno Lalegno has noticed a growing interest in bamboo products, partly because finishes aim for a highly natural element and partly because Lalegno lightly carbonates its bamboo products. In this way they are trying to transfer the light shades of oak to bamboo floors. A big plus point here is the dimensioning. Seeing that Lalegno guarantees stable parquet, the company has opted for a three-layer construction so that they can offer bamboo floors in lengths of 2200mm and widths of 189mm. Since Lalegno’s bamboo floors do not have any bevelled edges, you get the impression that the floor covers the entire room. In particular, the strand woven (thick) bamboo is rapidly growing in popularity. With this type of parquet the bamboo strips are compressed in such a way that the fibres change their shape. The result looks very trendy. It is probably the design look and the gentle shades of colour of the lightly carbonated fibres which greatly attract the wider public. Typical examples include 15-SWBamboe-Julieta, 15-SW-Bamboe-Robusto, and 15-SW-BamboeToro. MOSO: the specialist in bamboo flooring Interest in bamboo is still growing. In the beginning, people chose bamboo for its different look, but nowadays the environmental aspect has become increasingly important. MOSO guarantees that its solid bamboo products are CO² neutral over the full life cycle and is able to supply FSC certified bamboo made with 100% formaldehyde-free glue. This, combined with the fact that bamboo is not a tree but a grass which grows to maturity in six years, clearly proves that bamboo surpasses any wood when it comes to sustainability. Apart from the green credentials of MOSO bamboo, the constant innovation on the decorative side also makes it very popular. MOSO has introduced an extensive range of styles, colours, and surfaces, including brushed versions. There is even a bamboo floor with the original bark of the plant as top layer: this is both very beautiful and strong. As the A-brand in bamboo flooring, MOSO offers only the highest quality including a product guarantee of up to 30 years.

Exclusive floors in teak, ipe, and oak for mythical hotel on the French Riviera Floor fitter opts for Ciranova finish products

Floor Forum International 57

At the most southern point of the cape of Antibes lies Hotel du Cap- Eden Roc. This hotel is one of the most remarkable on the French Riviera and, during its long history, it has welcomed artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Georg Bernard Shaw, politicians such as Eisenhower, and stars such as Rita Hayworth or, more recently, Jude Law. Our attention, however, is focused on the wooden floors, which provide extra grace and style: oak parquet floors and tremendous terrace floors in teak and a photogenic pontoon in ipe. This work was done by Jean-Philippe Michel, the local parquet artist from ‘L’atelier du Parquet’, who chose Ciranova products to finish the floors.

32

Hotel du Cap – Eden Roc is not only situated in a fabulous location. The villa erected in the style of Napoleon III is itself a piece of the region’s cultural patrimony. A few years ago, the old hotel was completely renovated and restored. The floors were also included in this project and the hotel developed a partnership with L’atelier du Parquet, which is also based in Antibes. The company fitted the new oak parquet floors in the hotel rooms and completed the outdoor terrace in teak wood and a pontoon in ipe. They were also responsible for maintaining the floor. Covering floor in teak L’atelier du Parquet fitted an exclusive ship deck floor in Hotel du Cap with a surface

area of 1000m² for the outdoor terrace and at the same time a ship deck floor in teak for the indoor restaurant with a surface area of 500m². For the finish of the ship deck floor on the outdoor terrace they used Ciranova UVP Colour and UVP Decking Oil 2C, a VOC-free (0% VOC) dual component oil with nano dyes, which provided a special binding. There were a number of good reasons for this: the UVP Decking Oil 2C has to be applied in one coat. At the same time, the 2C technology provides extra protection and the reaction with the intrinsic substances of the wood reinforces the top layer. The colour of the wood is also retained thanks to an extra built-in absorber. Ciranova offers the UVP Colour in eight different colours, and

visit the new www.floor-forum.com

Pontoon in ipe They also built a new pontoon on the seaward side of the domain around the Hotel Du Cap for mooring small boats. The pontoon was given a ship deck floor in ipe wood. The result was absolutely magnificent and the finish was also resistant to the nonetheless hostile seawater. Here, too, they chose Ciranova UVP Colour and UVP Decking Oil 2C. The location and finish of the pontoon are unique and particularly photogenic. And so, it is certainly no coincidence that the pontoon has already been used as a location for filming various publicity spots. Recently, a spot was recorded for Dior Homme with Jude Law in the lead role.

Oak parquet for hotel rooms For the bedrooms the hotel management chose to fit new parquet floors, and they opted for oak wood. The finish, just like in the restaurant, was applied with Ciranova Aquafix Project 2K. This extremely colourfast finish also guarantees that the natural colour of the oak wood is preserved. And so, this exclusive project in this fashionable place proves all the more that parquet still enjoys preferential treatment when things have to be timeless and stylish. The modern finish products, which came from Ciranova in this case, ensure a long lifespan and easy maintenance. For more information : info@ciranova.be +32 (0)51/30.11.40 www.ciranova.eu

Maintenance To maintain the outdoor floors, ‘L’atelier du Parquet’ used Decking Care maintenance oil from Ciranova. Decking Care always gives the wood nutritional protection. Decking Care is applied to the wood once or twice a year to provide maximum protection. They always clean and prepare the wooden floor first using Ciranova Wood Cleaner. L’atelier du Parquet has also completed some magnificent work inside the hotel: an identical teak ship deck floor, which nonetheless required a different finish and the fitting of oak parquet floors in the bedrooms.

Teak ship deck floor in the restaurant For the finish of the teak ship deck floor in the restaurant, the floor fitters opted for a different solution to that outdoors and settled for the Aquafix Project 2K from Ciranova. This is a 2-component, waterborne, non-inflammable, odourless, and transparent PU-based varnish to provide an ecological finish for wooden floors. Thanks to its hardener, it is ideal as a dual component varnish for the heavy treatment to which it will be subjected in a restaurant and also possesses outstanding anti-slip properties. Here, they chose the Satin option to have it slightly glazed.

in this case the workers opted for the colour of teak in order to retain the natural colour of the teak wood as much as possible.

Edge sanders for the finishing touch Special Sanding machines (part 3)

… where other sanders fail When DIY enthusiasts get down to stripping fading paint from old deal or pitch-pine wooden floors, you often see the same signs: a nice result on the surface, but traces of paint along the skirting boards. This might meet the standards which they set for themselves, but a professional would not get away with such end results. In short, an edge sander is an essential tool of the floor fitter’s trade. These sanding machines reach places which are hard to reach. To the very edge and up to scratch Whilst we carry out the initial sanding using an endless belt sander (the so called ‘belt’), we use a rotating disc or orbital sanding technique for finer sanding work, which includes the removal of traces left by the endless belt sander. Both machines are complementary and essential parts of the professional floor fitter’s bag of tools. However, neither of these machines is capable of sanding in places which are difficult to reach. These include, for example, areas under radiators, flat strips along walls, corners, and stairs; the latter are becoming a more frequent part of the floor fitter’s work. Edge sanders are the only solution here. These machines make it possible to sand right up to the wall. Most edge sanders have a telescopic nose piece (optional in some cases) which increases the operating reach (e.g. under radiators) considerably, and by up to 35cm with some makes. These machines are designed in such a way that they can be deployed widely and they are usually easy to operate, even for inexperienced workers. The diameter of the sanding disc varies from make to make, but is usually 150 or 178mm. Edge sanders are designed in such a way that they can easily be deployed for sanding staircases, for example, through the addition of a Teflon sole. A selection from the range :

Bona

Bona offers three machines. The Bona Kunzle & Tasin Edge 130 is an extremely powerful edge sander, despite its light weight. The Bona Edge 130 is suitable for both discs with axis hole and discs with Velcro. This machine also has better dust suction than any other edge sander on the market. It is a practical machine fitted with a lamp and it is easy to transport. The Bona Edge is an exceptionally powerful edge sander. It is powered by a single-phase AC motor with a capacity of 2kW. At normal pressure the machine rotates at about 3000 revolutions a minute. The total weight of the Bona Edge is 15kg. The diameter of the sanding disc is 178mm. The centre piece for the 220 model is 220mm, whilst for the 330 model it is, of

course, 330mm. The centre piece is 50mm in height. The Bona Edge can be used to sand the edges of newly fitted wooden floors, parquet and cork floors, untreated floors, and used floors previously treated with oil or varnish. The Mini Edge from Bona is a parquet sander specially designed for sanding edges, stairs, and thresholds. This machine is also designed in line with the latest research into human engineering, safety, and capacity. The machines are checked and inspected meticulously before they leave the factory. The Mini Edge is a lightweight machine (9kg), which is extremely easy to operate. The Mini Edge has an integrated halogen lamp to provide better working results. The centre piece is protected by a rubber impact cover. Dismac Dismac presents the outstanding edge sander Speedy. The Speedy is a sander for professional use and has a long sanding arm to make it easier to sand under radiators. The machine is supplied with tools, dust bag, 10m leads, ear muffs, and dust mask. Despite its high motor capacity and rapid sanding speed, the Speedy is easy to use. The machine is extremely userfriendly whilst in use, even in places which are hard to reach. Since the dust suction tube can rotate, the dust bag can be put in any position as required. The bumper wheels, which are fitted near the sanding disc, make it possible to work close to skirting boards without damaging them. The powerful dust suction keeps dust off the sanding surface throughout the operation. Despite the substantially powerful motor, an electronic power breaker always ensures smooth and easy starting and constant efficiency, even with weaker fuses and a loss of voltage. The extremely flat sanding arm makes it possible to sand under very low radiators. All the moving mechanical parts are protected by covers, which, if necessary, can be removed easily. If necessary, the starting switch can be used without releasing the handles. The machine meets all the prevailing safety requirements and guidelines within the European Union.

FG Parkett The edge sander FG Taifun is now a permanent fixture and has a reputation for combining power and user-comfort. The electronic speed control ensures the right speed for each sanding tool. FG Taifun is an economic machine in many respects. The 120 and 330mm sanding arms are very easy to change. The FG Randy is a belt-corner-sanding machine to remove sanding marks along the sides. The FG Randy makes it possible to sand right up to the edge. This eliminates the risk of differences in colour with oiling or colouring. This powerful machine has a capacity of 1200W, is sturdily built, and is easy to connect to an external dust suction unit. Klindex Klindex presents the Mini Timba, a compact, yet powerful sanding machine with a reach of 304mm. The Mini Timba weighs 31kg and produces excellent sanding results right up to the wall. Thanks to the two heads, which rotate in different directions and are perfectly balanced, the Mini Timba is extremely easy to use, even for less experienced workers. The round wheels mean it is possible to rotate the machine effortlessly in all directions. You can use Mini Timba for both finishing and levelling. Although it is designed for use in small rooms, it also performs excellently on larger surfaces. Kunzle & Tasin “Twins”, Gemini in latin, a constellation easily seen in the northern sky, now gives its name to the latest creation of the universe Künzle & Tasin: GEMINI 100. The first sander of a new family of machines designed for the treatment of every kind of surfaces, made by the R&D Dept. of Künzle & Tasin after entering the group Biffignandi S.p.A. The steering sander is mainly driven thanks to a directional control: a light pressure put by the operator start the movement. Equipped with two counter-rotating discs (siafast version) for easy application of the abrasive, the machine can maintain the desired direction with a simple push on the right or left. The steering sander is more balanced and faster, perfect for prefinished but also suitable for solid wood sanding. Equipped with only one back wheel, the Spherical Wheel®, the machine can be used with a 360° movement. Light and compact for transport, it is the ideal tool for the floor specialist and for maintenance and finishes of plans in general.

Overmat Industries In order to sand perfectly in places which are hard to reach such as along skirting boards, under radiators, and on stairs, Overmat has a wide range of edge sanders. This machine provides a solution for places which a standard machine cannot reach. This Sideboy series of sanders is ideal for professional users. The machines are supplied with tools, dust bag, ear muffs, and dust mask. Repex The Repex Zephyr Light Edger is an extremely comfortable machine thanks to its compact and ergonomic design. It is designed for dustfree sanding in places which are difficult to reach, even on stairs. The nose is easy to use and can be replaced (optionally) by a longer nose of 35cm. This machine weighs barely 7.3kg and is therefore extremely easy to move with little effort on the part of the operator and in difficult working conditions. Dust can be absorbed directly in the dust bag, but the Repex Zephyr Light Edger is also equipped for connection to an external dust unit. Thanks to its powerful motor (1.2kW), this machine performs efficiently and professionally. Just like the other Repex sanding machine, this Zephyr Light Edger is designed to work for years.

Versailles panels are still popular

Versailles Whilst all these floors fit into the category of cassette or panel floors, the Versailles floor has a specific recipe. Of course, this pattern derives its name from the magnificent floors which Louis XIV fitted in the world famous Versailles Palace. A Versailles panel looks like a diagonal interlacement framed by a square edge of parquet strips. The Versailles Palace panels are exactly 1m² (100 x 100cm). They are separated by three strips of 8cm, which converge in a corner to form a point. Nowadays, Versailles panels are available in different dimensions and they are adapted to the room where they are fitted. Standard and customised sizes Several producers offer one or more fixed sizes. These can vary from 41 x 41cm to 100 x100cm. However, in the vast majority of cases the choice falls to customised work and, in fact, this is pure logic. Naturally, the panels themselves are not meant to be sawn. The floor has to ‘appear’. Usually, clients will consult with the architect or designer to decide on the best size. They will take account of the sizes of the room where the floor is to be fitted, the edge finish, and the preferred panel dimensions to calculate the correct configuration. A peculiarity of Versailles panels is that they are fitted diagonally (the shape of a rhombus). This means that half a (diagonal) panel is always needed at the edge for each row. Sellers of Versailles floors also provide those half-panels so that no sawing is necessary.

BJ Parket

Designs in cassette Panels or cassettes are the result of a specific production method, which differs completely from traditional parquet strip or wooden floor production. The panels are pre-assembled floor sections in line with particular design. The sections are sawn tailor-made and mitred and are glued to each other sideways and clamped together to dry. After assembly, you might have to saw off a tiny piece of the shaped panels to get exactly the same dimensioning and squareness for all panels. This makes the floor fitter’s job considerably easier. Various fitting patterns such as herringbone and Hungarian point (the classics) lend themselves to making cassettes. Other well known designs include Chantelle, Star, and Castle. The fitting pattern has to be quite specific before it can qualify for the name Versailles floors.

Wood sorts No one will be surprised to learn that here, too, oak is the most popular sort of wood. They have used French oak in the hall of mirrors at Versailles Palace, not only due to its look, but also due to its stability and, especially, the fact that large reserves of French oak were available. And so, historical propriety should result in the use of oak, but seeing that just about all sorts of wood are available nowadays, producers offer a wide range to choose from. No one need be surprised that this wood often includes expensive tropical sorts, since these floors are often chosen by people with a fairly large budget. After oak, teak is one of the many sorts used. The colour and structure of teak means that the look of the finished floor closely resembles the oak finish. Some makers also mention walnut and cherry. Professional work Almost all producers stress that fitting panel floors is a job for professionals. This type of parquet fitting is part of a parquet floor fitter’s training. However, most sellers are perfectly prepared to

Floor Forum International 57

Some regard it as such a small niche that they don’t bother to include it in their range. Then there are others who are seeing a rise in demand for Versailles panels, whilst others still have made a speciality of it. The fact is that these floors are not everyday floors, so they tend to make their way mainly to exclusive homes. We are not talking here only about renovation of old and stately homes, but also about modern and contemporary new buildings. The fact that most of these panels are tailor-made makes them even more exclusive.

give individual advice for each project, even on site. At all events, the best way to fit Versailles panels is full glueing on a mosaic subfloor which is sandpapered perfectly flat. Firstly, you measure and mark out the edging lines to measure where the middle panel has to go. The other panels are glued against each other and nailed into the side frieze and into some central blocks. A permanently elastic glue is strongly recommended for the glueing. A word from the producers : BJ Parket In the 24 years of its existence, BJ Parket has always had to produce panels. The number of panels increases year by year and the end is not yet in sight. Versailles panels are made almost exclusively from oak, but Versailles panels in teak, afrormosia, wenge, merbau, and a few other sorts of wood have also passed in review. The trend is for a distressed design, something which still gives Versailles panels an extra dimension. BJ Parket offers its clients customised Versailles panels as standard (set prices in their price list). It often happens that BJ Parket is given the diagram of the room and draws the panels in such a way that at least three sides work out perfectly in whole or half-panels. The only item which is really standard is the width of the frieze. Small Versailles are panels from 49.5 to 73cm made using a frieze of 5.5cm. Large Versailles are panels from 73 to 94cm made using a frieze of 7.2cm, and the Versailles XL is produced with a frieze of 9cm. In theory, the XL is offered in only one width, namely +/102cm, but even here they sometimes make an exception. The XL is always also offered as standard with an ongoing plait i.e. that the outer frieze is adapted in width in such a way that the plaiting in the panels runs nicely in line with the adjoining panels. This is an option with both Small Versailles and Large Versailles.

Design Parquet Most of the requests for Versailles panels at Design Parquet are for renovation projects concerning castles or old town houses. There is also some demand for Versailles panels in exclusive new building projects with a contemporary design. The most popular wood sort here, too, is oak, but other sorts such as wenge, merbau, and such like are also possible. Moreover, oak can be coloured in line with prevailing decorative

FB Hout has specialised in the production of these sorts of pattern floors for years, and now it seems that Versailles panels are making a comeback. Apart from Versailles, FB Hout also supplies other patterns such as Chantelle, Star, and Castle. All panels can be supplied in two-layer (FB+) and solid wood. The panels are designed mainly in oak, but clients are increasingly asking for other sorts of wood, and this is no problem in view of the company’s own production. At FB Hout almost all of their work is customised work. The dimensions are agreed in consultation with FB Hout, the client, the architect, or the designer. As regards the fitting, FB Hout is prepared to provide assistance, even for experienced floor fitters. Giorio According to Giorio, the return of Versailles panels is part of a more general trend. After all, modern architecture is increasingly mixing elements from different spheres. That’s why these panels are once again ‘in’. Designers like to combine classic styles with modern elements and vice versa in order to create an original setting. All wood sorts are eligible, although Giorio usually suggests oak or walnut. It is possible to make patterns to meet the client’s wishes. As for the dimensions, there isn’t really a standard, so the work is customised.

Parchettificio Forest The Versailles panels are back in fashion especialy for restoration of old houses. The wood sort is mainly oak and they are required in distressed design . We manufacture the standard size 800x800 mm. but we also help the client to calculate the optimal dimension for his own room and we make the panels tailor-made. You don’t need a special experience to fit these panels. Mardegan Legno At Mardegan Legno, they have noticed a renewed interest in Versailles panels in recent years, even though these floors are still regarded as a niche product for an extremely limited and select public. Most floors are designed in oak and in various possible finishes. At Mardegan Legno, they also produce Versailles panels in European walnut. The company offers 13 different geometrical patterns in sizes ranging from 40 x 40cm to 1 x 1m. Here, too, customised work is possible according to the client’s wishes.

Special Producers of Versailles panels

FB Hout

The basic difference from traditional marquetry is the intensive production process. This starts with the selection of the wood, since only the best selections can be used for this production. The manual composition of the panels not only ensures stable top parquet, but also provides an extra quality control. In theory, these panels can be fitted either glued or floating. However, Intrawood recommends glueing in order to ensure perfect stability.

Parqueterie Janod Versailles panels are still in fashion because they give apartments and villas a luxurious appearance. Here, too, oak is used most of all to create these panels, but Parqueterie Janod also uses French walnut or French wild cherry or combinations of these wood sorts. White designs in maple or dark floors in wenge are also possible. Mechanically distressed floors are also possible, although non-distressed floors are the most popular. Parqueterie Janod has two standard sizes (1,000 x 1,000mm and 980 x 980mm). These sizes are adapted to the dimensions of the room so the work is customised.

Intrawood

Timberline

Apart from being a producer of traditional parquet, Intrawood bvba also makes parquet panels. The company offers about eight designs, including Castle, Empire, Chateau, and Versailles. The Versailles design in 810 x 810mm and 1000 x 1000mm is clearly the best seller, followed by Castle 570 x 570mm. Here, too, the trend in recent months has been customised work based on the client’s own design. Each design can be made in any size. The panels are designed mainly in oak, but demand for exotic sorts is rising.

For Timberline the Versailles panel has always been one of the most popular cassettes. The main types are 20mm solid wood and 15 and 20mm multi-layer. At Timberline these Versailles floors are available in both distressed and non-distressed versions. The standard size of the panels is 810 x 810mm, but here, too, customised work is perfectly possible.

trends and according to the client’s wishes. The panels are available in both a distressed and non-distressed version. The standard size is 1,000 x 1,000mm with a thickness of 22mm or 600 x 600mm with a thickness of 14mm. Customised work is also possible.

Istanbul hosts a successful Domotex Middle East Domotex Middle East took place once again between 8 and 11 November and for the first time the Turkish city of Istanbul acted as host. At the end, the organisers said they were satisfied with the fair, the diversity of exhibitors, and the professional visitors who showed up.

approach potential clients in Turkey and surrounding countries such as Bulgaria, Lebanon, and Iran. Amongst other things, Adesiv presented a solvent-free glue, an epoxy-polyurethane glue, and an MS glue with polymers originally from Japan. Although the latter product is highly popular in several Northern European countries, it seemed to be virtually unknown on the Turkish market. However, Adesiv did not really achieve their objective at the fair due to the low number of visitors at the event. Origineel Chapel Parket

The fair was officially opened on 8 November by the Turkish minister for economic affairs, Zafer Çaglayan. The minister stressed the importance of Domotex Middle East and said: “Turkey is becoming more important to the world economy and we are delighted to be able to host a major economic event such as this trade fair for carpets and floors.” Satisfied exhibitors All together, 5099 visitors showed up for 222 local and international exhibitors, who together took up 7771m² of trade fair space. 21% of the visitors were from abroad, mainly delegations from the Middle East from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. At the end, the exhibitors expressed their satisfaction with this first edition of Domotex Middle East and praised the quality of the visitors. Participants did good business, contracts were concluded, and several exhibitors confirmed that they would also be taking part next time and said they intended to book a bigger stand. The fair welcomed a varied public ranging from wholesalers, retailers, purchasing managers, shopping centre agents, interior designers, architects, and professionals from the ship and yacht building industry. Furthermore, the Future of Flooring Forum, organised by ORSIAD, was a big success. This event attracted prominent figures from the world of parquet, PVC, and carpet floors. The next Domotex Middle East is due to take place in Istanbul Expo Centre from 7 to 10 November 2013. A overview of some exhibitors : Adesiv Adesiv, Italian producer of glues and finish products, took part in the first Domotex Middle East Istanbul 2012. Their aim was to

In line with their objective for international expansion, Origineel Chapel Parket proudly displayed their extended and diverse assortment: varying from pattern floors, variable widths between 7 and 38 cm, in a wide variety of colour shades. The brand has shown what it stands for: exclusive & sustainable wooden floors that last a lifetime. Given the economic growth that the Middle-East is experiencing, Origineel Chapel Parket sees potential in this market. Carpets still dominate, and only a small number of wood floor suppliers were in attendance. Although the majority of visitors came from host country Turkey, Origineel Chapel Parket believe this participation to be very positive. Chimiver Domotex Middle East provided Chimiver with an extra opportunity to present to the Middle East market its wide range of products for laying, treatment, maintenance and care of any kind of wooden floors both for indoor and outdoor. For example, there was a big attention for water-based lacquers, single component silane based glues and products for treatment of outdoor wood. Chimiver established very good contacts with potential new importers at Domotex Middle East. Dancing around the world with “CombiWood”! In The Netherlands CombiWood is ‘worldfamous’ for more than 10 years as a quality producer of engineered flooring. After joining the Domotex exhibition in Dubai for several times, Flamingo Parket wanted to see what should happen at the first edition of the Domotex in Istanbul. We’re maily focussed on the Turkish market and like we expected more the 75 % of the visitors at our booth where from Turkey. The number of visitors where not so many as at the Domotex in Hannover, but at least a lot more than at the Domotex in Dubai. We had around 70 businesscontacts and around 25 from these vistitors we see as potential customers. Flamingo Parket already deceided to join the Domotex 2013 version in Istanbul!

Parkettfreund Looking back at the Domotex Middle East in Istanbul Parkettfreund can draw a positive response. Visitors from 30 different countries took the opportunity within the 4 days of the fair to get a closer look at the large assortment presented at the German Pavilion. Product innovations in the range of aluminium profiles & also accessories for installation, reparation & underlays attracted a number of interested visitors. Very promising new contacts were made & Parkettfreund’s Export Manager Grégory Labouré could also strengthen the existing business relationships to his customers through informative personal conversations. This well established exhibition is absolutely worthwhile for all attendants.

By now, everyone in our industry knows that parquet can make an interior look absolutely fabulous. In the project which Chapel Parket completed in the Efteling theme park, everything was already looked marvellous, but the exclusive Chapel Versailles cassette floor made the package complete. The 200m² parquet floor glitters in an events hall in the new Efteling sensation Ravelin and charms both visitors and management alike.

New attraction, long tradition Efteling is one of the most well known recreation parks in the Benelux. This year, the fairy-tale theme park designed by the famous Dutch painter and designer Anton Pieck celebrates its sixtieth anniversary, yet it still continues to modernise. This makes a visit to the park, which is immersed in the gripping and romantic atmosphere of time-honoured fairy tales, even more impressive as the years go by. Ravelin was opened in 2011 and is another highlight for visitors, both young and old. Ravelin is an impressively designed fairy tale town where five shows are performed every day. These shows with horses and ravens are full of magic and sensation. The story

behind Ravelin has also been used for a television series. The complex, designed by Sander de Bruijn, is built in a mixture of different styles and accommodates an arena, a restaurant, offices, congress halls, and a holiday formula arrangement. The story of Ravelin has also been turned into a children’s television series. Versailles cassettes have no bevelled edge so that they connect evenly and this characteristic floor looks like one whole. The floor has a total surface area of about 200 square metres. Levelling compound for the subfloor Although Ravelin looks centuries old, it is, of course, an example of excellent 21st century construction work. For the fitting they decided to glue the Versailles cassettes directly onto the cement covering floor. Robin van Roy explained, “We decided to ask a specialist to level the cement floor, so we could be sure that there were no differences in height at all. Then, we glued the panels onto the levelled covering floor with Thomsit P685.” Perfectly balanced choice of floor The result speaks for itself. The architect, manufacturer, and the Efteling management agree on that. Robin van Roy says: “It is a floor which suits this exceptional interior absolutely perfectly. A floor which was too basic or standard would have impaired the general appearance of the location, but on the other hand a floor which was too demanding or special would have been out of place, too, because it would have stood out too much. The Versailles cassette is just right.” We can only agree with that: the floor is attractive and striking in keeping with the style of the building. The warm, light gloss of the hard wax oil finish gives that little bit extra, yet remains discreet.

another project and obviously found it absolutely charming. He was looking for a parquet floor for this hall. This hall accommodates all sorts of events, including business meetings. After joint consultation, they chose this floor. It fits in perfectly with the location and really does give the hall an exclusive look.”

Floor Forum International 57

Good relationship The upshot is that at Timberline Chapel they are extremely proud of their achievement and that the people from Efteling are very pleased, so it seems. Robin van Roy concludes: “They are certainly delighted with our floor. We still have a good relationship and they still ask us to fit other floors for them.”

Polyurethane glue is still the preferred glue of many floor fitters. It is ‘flexible’, but it also has great mechanical and physical properties. With epoxy-polyurethane adhesive, epoxy components are added which hardly affect the elasticity of the glue. Epoxy-polyurethane glue is a marriage of two sorts of glues to produce what might be the most reliable glue around. And so, epoxy-polyurethane glue is often recommended for glueing parquet in critical conditions, for critical substrates, or for the so called critical sorts of wood.

could it be otherwise? In just over a decade, floor fitters have familiarised themselves with scores of new sorts of glue. Quick as a flash!

Kerakoll Green Building Company

The wood and the trees We have covered the development of adhesives on several occasions in this magazine. This has gone from the medieval practice of glueing floors (yes, even parquet!) into a bed of hot pitch to today’s silane adhesives, of which there are still many sorts. It gets particularly hard when producers start combining various glues to make what are called common ‘hybrid’ glues. These are adhesives in which producers aim to unite the healthy properties of various sorts of glue technology to make a new composite glue. This combination often throws up surprising results with special and versatile qualities. However, this does make our list of glues considerably longer and the choice for the correct application considerably harder.

The modern floor fitter Away with tradition! Times have changed. Floor fitters have always had the reputation of being ultra-conservative. They generally used the same sander, the same glue, and the same oil or varnish for many years, sometimes for their entire career. In recent decades, however, the situation has changed. Whether they liked it or not, floor fitters have had to familiarise themselves with multi-layer parquet as an alternative to their beloved solid wood. In the meantime, the ‘alternative’ has completely eclipsed the ‘original’ in terms of volume. Modern floor fitters have incorporated laminate into their range because to do otherwise would have been sheer economic folly. This step away from tradition is also noticeably in evidence in the world of adhesives. How

New classifications It goes without saying that the choice of a glue depends on various factors. These factors relate to all aspects of parquet glueing. For example, the choice of glue is partly influenced by the nature and flatness of the substrate, the properties and dimensions of the floor itself, the sort of wood, the width, the thickness, the type of floorboard (solid wood or multi-layer), and the fact of whether or not the floor is finished. Furthermore, the possible presence of floor heating or cooling also plays an important part in the choice of glue. Depending on the elements, a glue may or may not be elastic, and within the elastic category we can identify several variants. The adhesive classification of the BBRI draws a distinction between ‘solid’ and ‘flexible’ glues. Within the elastic glue category we draw a distinction between hard, soft, or balanced. Solid or flexible Solid adhesives have high snap resistance and low elasticity. The strong adhesion and solidarity mean these glues will put more pressure on the substrate as the wood swells and shrinks. And so, you need a substrate with high cohesion. Solid glues are meant to counteract the movements of the floor and they possess great mechanical and physical properties. If you want to permit the wood to swell

and shrink, you have to use an elastic or flexible glue, which can absorb the tensile strength in the substrate and the floor covering. The glue does not need to have strong mechanical and physical properties (merely enough to retain the adhesion). Flexible or elastic adhesives The above-mentioned BBRI distinction does not provide variations within flexible or elastic glues. Nevertheless, and especially since the emergence of silane adhesives, elastic has become a ‘stretchy’ concept. If we expect glue to show a certain ongoing flexibility to absorb the movements of the building materials, we need a flexible or elastic glue. In recent years, developments on the glue market have been dominated by the degree of elasticity of parquet adhesives and the quest for a perfect balance. Nowadays, hybrid glues are classified according to three degrees of elasticity, namely strongly elastic, softly (or highly) elastic, and balanced elastic. As regards the demarcations of the territories, we discovered various approaches. Epoxy-polyurethane adhesive Epoxy-polyurethane adhesive is therefore one of those wonderful, ‘hybrid’ glues which combine all the good features of various sorts of technology. Let’s briefly examine the two sorts of technology. Epoxy Epoxy glue is a dual component adhesive based on epoxy and is used for all sorts of applications such as industrial and domestic as well as in aircraft construction. It can be applied as a coating, but also in combination with glass fibres. Epoxy glue is also used a lot as a repair glue when it will contain a solid substance as a filler. A hardener is added to the epoxy to create a strong adhesive bond. The glue can be removed again easily by warming it gently, but not too strongly, such as with a blow torch.

Floor Forum International 57

Polyurethane Polyurethane adhesive is absolutely ideal for glueing just about all parquet or wooden floors, especially solid parquet, wider strips, and moisture-sensitive types of wood (2K) such as beech, maple, and such like. Polyurethane adhesives can be used for glueing anhydrite floors and sand-cement floors. They are ideal for fitting pre-lacquered floors which are fitted after the application of a moisture barrier. The properties of polyurethane adhesive are created by the composition of the substance. PU is a co-polymer which consists of hard and soft segments. These segments are created by the reaction of urethane and isocyanate, form a long change, and alternate with each other. The hard segments tend to crystallise and form a hard material. The soft segments, viewed separately, should form a syrupy fluid. The combination of both segments ensures a fusion of the best properties from both segments. This is what makes PU adhesive both very strong and elastic.

50

The combination of both As the name suggests, an epoxy-polyurethane glue is a polyurethane adhesive with epoxy components. Some people call the combination of polyurethane and epoxy the most reliable and most effective adhesive technology which there is for wooden floors. These glues combine all the good of polyurethane with the strong properties of epoxy. The properties and applications of epoxy-polyurethane adhesives vary slightly from producer to producer.

A selection from the range : Adesiv Adesiv was one of the first manufacturers in Europe to offer two-component epoxy polyurethane adhesives. These adhesives remain one of Adesiv’s strongest products and are some of the most popular products in over 25 countries. Euro F1 and Pelpren PL6 are two-component epoxy polyurethane adhesives that do not contain water, and are specially designed for gluing down wood floors to any type of concrete surface or on top of existing non-absorbent floors (marble, tile, Palladiana, or wood substrates). These adhesives are also suitable for gluing down pre-finished wood floors onto concrete estrich floor or existing non-absorbent floors (marble, tile, Palladiana, or wood substrates). The sometimes rather unpredictable tropical wood species present no problem for these adhesives, and they can also be used perfectly with floor heating systems. Adesiv’s newest solvent-free adhesive is the Euro 5. Chimiver Panseri Spa Chimiver presents its line of twocomponents epoxy-PU water-free adhesives for laying of traditional and prefinished wooden floors onto cement, waterproof cement and nonabsorbent floors (ceramic, porcelain stone, marble, etc) and onto heated subfloors. Adesiver 501 EP is an odorless adhesive, adapted to lay all kinds of wood and in any size including strips, without requiring the pre-laying of wood fillets/battons. It is furthermore recommended, since water free, in laying prefinished parquet, and pre-calibred one. Adesiver Hercules is a hypoallergenic adhesive with very good rheological abilities. It is free of isocyanic resins, aromatic solvents and epoxy resins with a molecular weight of <= 700. Is ideal for laying of pre-finished and precalibred parquet as well as any other type of timber flooring including boards without having to prepare a bed of wood laths. Kerakoll Green Building Company Kerakoll Green Building Company has the Eco-friendly SLC Eco L34 line, which is not harmful to human health. The following 2-component glues are based on EP-PU: SLC Eco L34 (ECO2), SLC Eco L34 Neutra (Eco3) and SLC L34 Plus (Eco4). The L34 Plus is suitable for use in the Netherlands, as it contains no solvents and has the EC1 Plus certificate. This glue does not give the user brown hands. The L34 can be used to glue all sorts of parquet to all substrates. If you need to treat the substrate first, the SLC Eco EP21 (Eco3) can be used as a primer or moisture barrier for up to 5% residual moisture. If you do not wish to use a dual component glue, there is the single component SLC Eco L34 Flex (Eco4), which has been developed using the exclusive Anti-Hygro and Thermo Shock Technology.

Mapei Mapei presents Ultrabond P902 2K, a dual component epoxy-polyurethane glue which is specially designed for glueing wooden floors. This 2-component glue is composed of epoxy and polyurethane to combine the positive properties of both as much as possible in one adhesive with the advantage that no solvents or moisture are used to activate the glue and allow it to dry. This glue is suitable for all types and sizes. Ultrabond P902 29 is deployed for glueing wide and narrow floorboards onto cement-like substrates such as Mapecem, Mapecem Pronto, Topcem, Topcem Pronto, and comparable substrates. Ultrabond P902 29 can be used on ceramic tiles, terrazzo tiles, anhydrite floors, and such like. This glue is often used for glueing wood onto wood such as, for example, solid wood planks (with or without a tongue and groove construction), traditional parquet, and Burgundy on a

sandpapered chipboard or wooden substrate. The advantages of these glues are that they are versatile, lightly elastic, and have a long processing time. Recoll

Recoll believes that an epoxy-polyurethane adhesive has the big advantage that it can be deployed for just about Every possible situation for fitting wooden floors and for all types of wooden floors. It is a dual component glue in which component A and component B have to be mixed. It is somewhat less elastic than silane adhesives. Recoll International presents three different epoxy-polyurethane adhesives: Parquet 0160 ECO (3% solvent component), Parquet 0160 Eco Green (solvent-free), and Parquet Premium (no risks or hazard symbol). Tover Two-component epoxy-polyurethane adhesives still represent an excellent compromise and combination between high adhesion performances on any type of support and a competitive price. Even if less elastic than silane based products, Tover adhesives are suitable to bond on under-heating systems even big dimensions boards. Tovcol TP2CI (solvent free and odorless) and Tovcol Light are very efficient products and thus much popular also for small and medium sized floors, thanks to their long working time (up to 3 hours for Light) and a good yield. The risk of allergy to epoxy resins is reduced to a minimum with Tovcol LIGHT due to chemical compounds which make it hypo-allergic and labeled without risk symbols.

Special Epoxy polyurethane adhesives

Epoxy-polyurethane glues are characterised by a system of complete reticulation, which enables them to produce very high chemical, physical, and mechanical performances, which are normally superior to those of traditional adhesives. Applications vary from rubber to linoleum, PVC, cork, wood, and ceramic, for both indoor and outdoor floors and walls. This is the biggest advantage of this kind of glue, namely that it can be used for any kind of application both in interior and in external areas. The fact that these glues usually have two components improves their performances, but some fitters still prefer not to use them because they are more used to one component adhesives. Lechner offers epoxy-polyurethane glues for any application. They particularly like to highlight Gommapol 800, which is a reaction adhesive for homogenous and heterogeneous PVC, cushioned vinyl flooring, rubber floor coverings, synthetic grass, and sports floors on cement and calcium sulphate- screeds, mastic asphalt, concrete, wood, chipboard, ceramics, stone, and metal. This product has great final strength, excellent mechanical and chemical resistance, excellent stability, and structured nonslumping consistency. SIPOL is an adhesive for use on wooden flooring of any size and species on absorbent or non absorbent cement screeds, anhydrite and pre-existing ceramic flooring marble, steel, and wooden panels (after pre-treatment for indoor use). It is suitable for castor chairs and on warm water floor heating and has, excellent ridge formation, high shear strength, and excellent workability. Sipol Free is an adhesive which does not contain any solvents or water. It is used on wooden flooring of any size and species on absorbent or non absorbent cement screeds, anhydrite and pre-existing ceramic flooring, marble, steel, and wooden panels (after pre-treatment). It is for indoor use. Sipol Free is an almost unique adhesive in its category and bears the GEV EC1R label for its very low VOC content.

Levelling is getting easier Special Levellers for the substrate

Self-levelling products for all substrates Building workers encounter all sorts of substrates. You have cement-bound screeds, anhydrite floors, industrial floors, wooden floors, etc. Even greater is the number of possible situations where levelling is necessary before you can fit a wooden floor. An even floor is essential, whether we are talking about fitting a floating floor or a fully glued parquet floor (or another floor covering). Producers of levelling materials offer an extensive range of solutions for most assignments. Here, too, safe and ecological work are making their mark. Mainly in renovation The fact that levelling is necessary more often in renovation than in new buildings is no guarantee of a level substrate in new buildings. Tolerances in the building industry are fairly ‘broad’ in that respect (7mm), whilst for parquet they are fairly small (3mm). Fluid and fast-drying Levellers on the market nowadays are highly fluid so that in some respects they even themselves out naturally, but the fast setting means it is advisable to give their fluid character a helping hand with a spatula or mop. At all events, you have to apply the leveller and spread it quickly. Therefore, it is also best not to make too much leveller, and certainly no more than you can spread in 15 to 20 minutes. All this is the result of the fast drying time of levelling compounds. Those drying times vary from brand to brand. You can walk upon surfaces again between one and three hours later, depending on the product. The time needed for glueing varies between 2 and 30 hours. This is also the time which is usually needed to apply a second layer of levelling compound if you have to remove a bigger difference in level. Most levellers have a filling capacity of 1-10mm per layer. If you have several layers, it will be necessary with some brands to sprinkle on some quartz sand between layers. The temperature limits between which levellers can be applied are usually between 5 and 30°C. It is not advisable to use a leveller if the temperature is outside those limits. The substrate temperature has to be at least 5°C. Air humidity of 65% is ideal. The screed itself must not contain more than 2 to 2.5% of residual moisture, whilst for anhydrite floors this percentage is 0.5%.

What’s on the market?

Adesiv Adesiv promotes the cement-based levelling compound Pavilast R for levelling uneven floors. This is done in accordance with the following fitting instructions. Always check the moisture in the bottom layer using the right instruments. The bottom layer must not contain any liquid and must be free of loose items such as plaster, dust, oils, or wax. Pour the powder (25kg) and the water (6.5kg), which has reached room temperature, into a clean bucket and mix the compound with an electric stirrer until you get an even paste with no lumps and of a thickness which you can spread. The paste obtained in this way must be left for a few minutes before it is applied with the correct, smooth, stainless steel spatula. Before you apply the paste, always check the moisture in the covering floor – this must be under 2% (under 0.5% with

anhydrite). The surrounding temperature should be between 15 and 25°C, whilst the relative air humidity must not exceed 75%. If the substrate is loose, it is better to pre-treat it with Pavilast K. To obtain a better spreading quality, you can add ADECON K500 to Pavilast R. Adesiv recommends that you use Adesiv products for glueing. Bona Bona H600 is a levelling compound specially for mosaic parquet, 10mm solid parquet, and ready-for-use parquet up to a maximum thickness of 15mm. This leveller flows out very easily and is strong, solid, and tension-free (filling capacity from 2 to 10 mm). You can walk on it after two hours. The floor can be fitted 24 hours later. Bona H600 has a filling capacity from 2 to 10mm. For thicker layers it is necessary to sprinkle the surface with quartz sand. This leveller is based on cement and synthetic resin. Consumption is 1.5kg/m². The substrate has to comply with DIN 18356; it has to be level, dry, clean, free of cracks, compression resistant, and tensile and must not be too smooth or rough. Treat the substrate with Primer Bona D510 (always sprinkle quartz sand as well); avoid pile-ups and spills. Lechner Spa Lechner SpA presents its complete line of levelling and self-levelling compounds, most of which now bear the GEV EC1/EC1R certificates. Levelfast, Ultradur, and Fibrodur are the best sellers and are greatly appreciated by Lechner’s clients, especially the first ones for the subsequent fitting of resilient floorings, and the last one for the subsequent fitting of parquet, being equipped with special fibres. In addition to the high quality of the rough materials used in the formulation of its products, Lechner is also using new packaging. Nowadays, the company pays more attention than ever before not only to its quality and technical preparation, but also to the style of its look. Its aim is finding a solution to all its customers’ needs, as its Ultradur Mid-East shows, a selflevelling compound to be used where temperatures exceed 40°C. Mapei Mapei has both cement-bound and gypsum-bound levellers. The cement-bound levellers are for traditional cement covering floors and other floors such as tile floors. They also have a fibre-reinforced leveller (Fiberplan) for wooden floors. In addition, there is the gypsum-bound leveller Planitex D10 for anhydrite floors and floors which require a low-tension leveller. There is also a repair grout based on gypsum, namely Planitex D10 Standfest. These gypsum-bound levellers have the same easy spreading properties

and nice flow as the cement-bound levelling compounds. The added value of Mapei levellers lies in the variety of products so that there is a Mapei product to level any floor. For example, Mapei offers the Ultraplan Maxi leveller, which can be applied in a layer spread of up to 40mm. And so, there is a levelling compound for any floor in the range. The choice depends on the layer thickness required, the required pressure resistance, and the floor finish. The major added value within the package of Mapei levellers is that several different floors can be treated with a small number of products. Pallmann UZIN has developed UZIN NC 174, a premium performance levelling compound which is ideal for smoothing and levelling work prior to fitting a wooden floor. UZIN NC 174 is not only extremely reliable, but also environmentally friendly. UZIN NC 174 bears the CE label to guarantee that each bag has a compressive strength of 35N and a flexural strength of 7N. As well as bearing the CE label, all products are EC1 R Plus rated for low emission, a consideration for contractors or specifiers who are looking for BREEAM or LEED certification. UZIN NC 174 also provides a number of benefits for Floor fitters, such as excellent fluidity, accelerated setting with an increased surface hardness, extreme ‘watering stability’, and shrinkage reduction. The ‘Level Plus Effect’ also lowers the risk of bubbling and creates the best possible surface to fit the final floor covering, resulting in

a very smooth appearance and a level finish. Stauf Stauf offers various solutions for levelling floors. Stauf SPP-95 is a high-quality cement-based leveller. The product is self-levelling and can be pumped. It produces a perfectly smooth surface with great strength and flexibility. Stauf SPP-95 reduces tension and dries quickly. The product has a low level of emissions (EC-IR-plus). IBOLA AS is also a cement-based product (EC-IR plus) for elastic floors, textile, and wooden floors. This product, too, has good fluid properties and dries quickly. IBOLA GS is a Universal levelling compound based on calcium sulphate-hemihydrates, which can also be deployed for multi-layer parquet. Finally, IBOLA RM is a stable repair and levelling compound (ECIR plus), which dries extremely quickly and can be walked on within a few minutes. Tover Leveling compounds: Rockfloor F10 and Rockfloor Verde In its range for substrate preparation, Tover offers a self-leveling compound full of advantages: Rockfloor F10. Its long leveling time for thickness up to 10 mm enables to lay the wooden floor only after 24 hours. Fiber-reinforced, it is particularly strong and its rough surface improves the adhesion of glues. It is perfectly suitable on under-heating systems. This year a new leveling product has been introduced: Rockfloor Verde which does not contain fibers and thus is more economic and usable to create a layer thick until 10 mm.

The most versatile of all floors Special Laminate floors (part 3)

Ongoing innovations make laminaat an all-rounder We’ve said it before. Nowhere has the speed of change been so impressive as in the history of laminate. From the time that this ‘new’ floor covering saw the light of day, it has gone from one technological metamorphosis to another. Has laminate reached a technological ceiling? That seems doubtful because producers are still coming up with that ‘little extra’ to help them stand out from their rivals. The result of this upward curve is a versatile floor covering which lends itself to all sorts of buildings, rooms, and applications. all sorts of floors. By this we’re not alluding to the fact that laminate presents other imitations apart from wood, but simply stating that laminate is a fully fledged solution for any choice of floor, whether the choice is based on technical, aesthetic, or decorative reasons. Laminate can be fitted in all rooms in a home: living room, kitchen, now even the bathroom, landings,, bedrooms, playrooms, office, or study. As regards the appearance of the floor, there are endless variations without limit in all sizes. These include traditional wooden floors, traditional parquet, even in antique (but popular) fitting patterns such as Hungarian point or herringbone, ceramic tiles, natural stone, and even floors with the appearance of Bruges lace, which a well known manufacturer recently introduced at the ‘Interior’ trade fair.

Away with that wicked reputation! Let’s not beat about the bush. When the first laminate floors appeared, they were greeted with deep suspicion to put it mildly. That, too, is a euphemism. Some people treated laminate with the same disdain as those in the furniture industry treated the veneer furniture when it first came on the scene. Certainly, in the early days, true wood lovers didn’t have a good word to say about what were often very imperfect imitations. Of course, their attitude was understandable. Try taking a photograph of a wooden plank, sticking it to a compressed panel, and selling this new mess as an alternative to parquet. However, laminate has now completely shed its wicked reputation, thanks to its ongoing developments. It has gone from being a cheap imitation floor (read: a floor for ‘the poor’) to a versatile engineered floor now regarded by the most demanding clients as an alternative to other floors. Parquet floor fitters, once so cynical towards laminate, have seen a new market emerge before their very eyes. A floor to rival all other floors Thanks to the technological innovations described below, laminate is not a serious rival not just to wooden floors, but also to

For all building work Laminate can be deployed for all types of building work. With the necessary measures in the area of acoustics, it soon makes its way into flats. Whilst laminate floors have long been accepted as floors in homes, it is only recently that they have found an open door to larger projects, commercial premises, and publicly accessible buildings. For commercial premises such as shops, one of the top arguments for a laminate floor is that it can be replaced speedily in the event that the shop interior needs to be modernised. Those who work in computer rooms appreciate the anti-static character of these floors, whilst in nursing homes and hospitals the fact that laminate floors have properties to restrict (or even kill) bacteria is an important plus point. And so, you can use laminate for all building work and in both new buildings and renovation. In new buildings project managers may prefer laminate because they always find something to their taste in all the possible varieties. In rooms in the home which are used less frequently, clients choose laminate ‘as a permanent option’, whilst in living rooms some new building clients opt for laminate as a temporary solution in the hope that one day their budget will allow them to fit a real wooden floor. With renovation, the minimal thickness of laminate also plays a part in the choice. In quite a lot of alteration projects, laminate is the only possible (hard) floor covering precisely because of this thin structure. Striking innovations We asked a number of leading producers what they would consider to be their most important technological innovation in recent years. They all seemed to be singing from the same hymn sheet.

visit the new www.floor-forum.com

Sizes In the past, a laminate plank was simply a laminate plank. All floorboards had the same dimensions whatever their brand. It even seemed that the machines were set for this purpose. Nowadays, however, laminate appears in several dimensions. In this respect it shadows the trends in parquet floors. Wider floorboards are in. As regards tiles, these are giant-size: marvellously contemporary. Several widths combine in one and the same package to make the parquet appearance even more authentic. Yet it is mainly the ingenious combination of decor and size which can work wonders. A unique feature is the sequence of planks, which, thanks to the decor, give the impression that they are endless in length, as if they have no end. It is possible to affect the room by playing with sizes. Rooms become more spacious, wider, or longer, depending on how the designer plays with the sizes. Durability These days, durability has several meanings. Laminate is promoted as durable due to its resistance to all possible influences which can cause wear and tear. Laminate is scratch-resistant and hardwearing; the surface protection which it provides has improved to such an extent in recent years that laminate floors can last for years, even in high traffic rooms. Yet ‘durable’ also has that other meaning, namely ‘durabilité’ in French and ‘sustainability’ in English. Sustainable construction is very much a current subject. It requires from everyone a close involvement in the natural world and the conviction that we have to spring into action now if we are going to save the planet. Wood is a renewable raw material. We receive ‘sustainable building material’ when we use for production nothing but wood from sustainably managed forests. More and more we are seeing how laminate manufacturers are proudly and justifiably displaying their sustainability credentials with PEFC and /or FSC labels. These certificates prove that their floors are made using sustainable raw materials.

aesthetics and appearance, strength or even permanent click systems, and very high wear resistance and scratch resistance. Easy fitting You might think that the ease of fitting a laminate floor is only a factor for consumers who fit the floors themselves, but nothing is further from the truth. It is still a top selling point, even if an experienced floor fitter does the work. After all, the fitting is done quickly and clients only have to live on a ‘building site’ for a short period of time. Moreover, fitting laminate is a fairly ‘clean’ job in comparison with fitting many others floor coverings. Low maintenance This is a direct benefit for end users. A laminate floor is a clean floor which only has to be dusted or vacuum cleaned and is squeaky clean after light mopping. The laminate finish means that these floors are virtually free of stains. Some producers offer surface treatments which repel dirt or are even equipped with substances to kill bacteria so that dust mites cannot survive. What’s on the market? Balterio Balterio makes use of the 3D Wood Effect, Chrome zone technology, and foiled Vgroove to achieve the look and feel of real parquet. The new 3D Wood Effect highlights the natural relief of the wood grains through the variations in degrees of gloss from matt to satin and silk. The exclusive Chrome zone® technology stresses the true to nature® touch by giving the grains a glossy look. Foiled V-groove: here, a foil tape is applied to the bevelled edge, which corresponds perfectly to the structure and pattern of the laminate plank. This gives the bevelled edge an unprecedented rich and deep structure, as if it were sawn from a real oak plank. Balterio has suitable laminate for any interior style thanks to various finishes in five plank sizes. Balterio is a vertically integrated producer and uses only the best raw materials, which it checks from A to Z. The HDF core panel has a high density (895kg/m³) and low swelling percentage so that it is dimensionally stable and the click system is secure. The fitting is quick and easy. For high traffic Balterio presents its Conference.

Surface structure An unforgettable step in the development of laminate floors was the creation of a structure. Seeing wood is one thing, but feeling it is a completely different matter. For some years now, producers have made the ‘photograph’ even more authentic by not only applying the ‘print’ of the wood to the base, but also by printing the structure of the corresponding wood sort into this base in the form of a contrast. Some people call this ‘embossed in register’ and it has given laminate floors an extra dimension. Surface textures correspond to the appearance: distressed floors (still a big hit!) are given some man-made defects, whilst hyper-modern is also possible by means of a super-polished surface structure. Even natural stone designs feel authentic. This tremendous step forwards is the result of printing and pressing technology, an innovation which can make a difference.

Budget Although the world of laminate throws up huge differences in price, it is still a budget-friendly floor. Clients have little faith in products with rock bottom prices. It is mainly the higher segment brands which feed the market. These are durable laminates, which win over clients with their visible quality in different areas:

Woodstructure®+ technology ensures that each plank has a deep, natural structure so that the laminate floor actually looks like parquet. The ‘MatLook®’ finish gives the floor the appearance of oiled parquet. BerryAlloc’s extensive collection, with wood patterns which are realistic and true to nature, give clients the opportunity to choose a laminate floor which really does look like parquet. with no grooves, with two grooves (‘Micro Woodview®’), and with four grooves (‘Micro Woodview®’). BerryAlloc offers two collections which can be fitted quickly and easily in any room in the home, including the bathroom and kitchen. Both the Riviera and Titanium collections are fitted with a moisture-repellent Hydro Plus® treatment, which provides perfect protection from water. The floor fitter doesn’t need to take any further action. These two Hydro Plus® collections not only have this exceptional technology at their disposal, but they are also available in a wide range of decors and finishes. The perfect choice for all rooms in the home! For high traffic floors, BerryAlloc presents the BerryAlloc High-Tech Laminate: class 34 of the international EN 13329 standard. Haro Haro’s main innovations are found in the areas of surface structure, wood sorts, and designs. Naturally, Haro also uses its experience in parquet production to make laminate. Thanks to thirteen different textures, Haro brings the look of laminate floors even closer to the original. Both the look and feel correspond to the chosen wood sort. Clients can choose from no fewer than 50 styles of wood. Oak leads the field here, too. To take advantage of the trend towards bigger rooms in the home, Haro offers a number of large sizes in one-strip laminate. An outsider: the Gran Via (with bevelled edges on the four sides) is available in widths of 243mm and lengths of 2,200mm. It also has a unique click system, Top Connect, for speedy fitting. For high traffic, Haro presents its Haro Tritty 250. HDM Elesgo® is a new and globally patented system to produce quality laminates. This surface technology beats all its rivals. During the high-tech production process, the material, impregnated with acrylic resins, hardens as in a microwave under the electron rays. ‘Elesgo’ is an acronym from the (German) words ‘Electronen’, ‘Strahl’, ‘Gehärtete’, and ‘Oberfläche’ (surface hardened by electron rays). Elesgo® laminates have a 100% closed surface, so the top layer is waterproof and very easy to clean. The material is also flexible up to radius 1, scratch-resistant, anti-static, and extremely durable. This makes it suitable for several uses. All decors, including lifelike wood and natural stone decors, can be designed with a super matt, baroque, or high-gloss surface. Surface structures can also be applied to the surface.

price, low maintenance, and its strength. Lamett aims to stand out from its rivals in the fields of aesthetics, ease of fitting, and acoustic improvement thanks to a thickness of 12mm. For high traffic rooms, they recommend the Sapphire and the Classica. Parador Parador’s most important innovation in recent years has been the development of the technique known as ‘synchron pressing’. This new technique makes it possible to give the floorboards the same structure as the corresponding wood sort to give you both the look and feel. Parador regards the easy fitting and low maintenance as important advantages. Laminate is the solution par excellence for rented flats. Parador aims to stay ahead of its rivals as regards design. The in-house created decors are only found at Parador and the company was the first to offer laminate individual printing. Pergo Pergo promotes the surface structure, sizes, and easy fitting as its most important innovations. In the area of surface structures, they offer a highly varied choice ranging from an old look and vintage to highly polished floors. Here, too, they play with sizes to have an effect on the room. For example, Pergo presents a laminate floor, the planks of which seem to be several metres long, as if they continue on and on. With the patented click system Perfect Fold, Pergo offers innovative connecting technology to make fitting even easier and faster. This click system, the highest durability, and the longest lifespan guarantee are the points which make this brand stand out. For use in public or other high traffic areas, Pergo’s offer includes its Public Extreme range. Quick•Step® Quick•Step® deploys several high-tech operations to give laminate planks the same look and feel as a genuine wooden floor. As regards the surface structure, the most important technique is the famous embossed in register which gives the laminate plank the structure of the corresponding sort of wood. The designs and saw-cuts also help to give the look of real wood. With its Lagune laminate floor, Quick•Step® brings laminate into the bathroom: the floor is fitted with an anti-slip rubber strip on the long side and ‘Seal and Click’ on the short side. The top arguments to persuade clients to choose laminate are design, quality, and easy fitting. For high traffic floors, Quick•Step® presents the Majestic Pro floor. This is class 33 and is available in thicknesses of 8 or 9.5mm.

Lamett

58

At Lamett, the most important technological innovation to ensure that laminate can match the look and feel of parquet is the technique known as ‘deep embossed synchronised printing’. This yields perfect correspondence of the wood grain to the texture in the surface. Seeing and feeling! The use of a waterproof HDF base also makes laminate floors suitable for use in damp rooms. For Lamett, the three most important advantages of laminate are the

Windmöller Flooring /Witex The most important innovations at Witex, which give laminate the look of parquet, are the authentic joints, the perceptible surface structure, and the extra large plank dimensions. Thanks to the Aqua Protect System and the profile seals, the floorboards are suitable for use in damp rooms. Witex products stand out from others because of factors such as Loc Tec, the manifold proven Unilin fitting system. The short delivery times and delivery reliability are, of course, also an advantage. Witex guarantees top quality and gives a lifetime guarantee on the stability of the floor and the click system. For high traffic applications Witex presents the Piazza and Grande.

In 2009, the financial crisis raised its ugly head in the Netherlands and the country fell into recession. However, due to the country’s relatively strong base (in 2008, the Netherlands had a budget surplus and a low national debt), the government has managed largely to absorb the impact of the crisis. The budget for 2013 is extremely forward-looking and is designed to restore the economy. Wood is not really a major industry in the Netherlands, so the country plays only a relatively minor role in the world of parquet. But,they offer quality. The Netherlands - geography The Netherlands has a total surface area of 41,526km². The country is about 300km long from north to south and from east to west about 200km wide. The province of North Brabant includes about thirty small Belgian areas as enclaves, which together constitute the municipality of Baarle-Hertog; in turn, those enclaves include two Dutch enclaves, which belong to the municipality of Baarle-Nassau. Apart from the mainland, the Netherlands also includes the Frisian islands of Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog, and Rottumeroog. In the east the Netherlands has a border with Germany (577km), to the south with Belgium (450km), to the west with the North Sea, and to the north with the North Sea and the Wadden Sea (the coastline is 451km long in total). The Dutch Antilles are an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and include two groups of islands in the Caribbean Region which belong to the Lesser Antilles, together covering 800km² and with about 200,000 inhabitants. These two groups of islands belong to the Leeward Islands and Windward Islands respectively and are located about 900km from each other.

at the end of 2013 is expected to be 447 billion euros (71.9% GDP). To help finance the debt, the national budget for 2013 includes an item of over 10 billion euros in interest charges.

Dutch economy and strong points The large natural gas reserves are of great importance to the Dutch economy, partly due to export income. Major European rivers such as the Rhine, Maas, and Scheldt are important to the Netherlands as interchanges in European transit traffic to places such as the Ruhr Region in Germany, so that Rotterdam, for example, has been the biggest port in the world for years. Schiphol airport is also an important boost to the Dutch economy, whilst multinationals such as Shell, Unilever, and Philips have their headquarters in the Netherlands.

Parquet in the Netherlands The Netherlands consumes and produces parquet. It is one of the smallest producers and users in the FEP region.

Some key figures The budget deficit in 2013 is expected to be almost 17 billion euros. This sum consists of two parts: the State has a 13.5 billion euro deficit and the local authorities (municipalities, provinces, and public waterways and works) are responsible for 3.2 billion euros. Expressed as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), the budget deficit for next year comes out at 2.7%. This means that the deficit is less than half of what it was in 2009. Moreover, with this deficit the Netherlands is within the 3% limit of the Stability and Growth Pact. Government debt

Wood in the Netherlands Dutch wood often has only a limited use. This is because of the modest quantities (less than 10% of the demand for wood is met by the country’s own forests), the required sorts of wood, and the quality. Dutch forests contain very few oak and beech trunks of veneer quality. Pine or deal which is sufficiently fineringed to make window frames hardly exists. However, it is possible to make floorboards from the better quality wood such as oak, larch, or douglas. The latter two lend themselves nicely to making laminated wood constructions or frontage covering material. Laminated larch or douglas wood has a splendid appearance due to the red core wood. This certainly stands out in comparison with the deal wood normally used to make rafters. Dutch oak or douglas is perfectly suitable for restoring windmills or old buildings. Furthermore, larch and pine are often used in hydraulic engineering such as sheet piling.

Parquet production In 2011, total parquet production in the FEP countries amounted to 70,713,000m² as compared to 70,300,000m² in 2010. The Netherlands accounted for 2.33%. The only countries with lower figures are Belgium (0.61% ) and Czech Republic (2.05%). And so, in 2011, Dutch parquet makers produced a total of 1,647,613m² as compared to 1,251,340m² in 2010. This represents growth of almost 400,000m². Parquet consumption In 2011, parquet consumption in the FEP countries fell slightly by 1.65% to 91,475,000m² as compared to 92,945,000m² in 2010. As for consumption, the Netherlands is in the fourth last position. Only Rumania, Czech Republic, and Hungary consumed less parquet in 2011. And so, all together in 2011, the Dutch purchased 2,469,825m² of wooden floors, as compared to 2,509,951m² in 2010, a slight, almost negligible drop.

Flamingo Parket was formed in 1985 under the name Din Parketfabrieken BV. In the beginning, the firm produced traditional parquet and solid wood strips exclusively for the Dutch market. At the end of the 1980s, they started producing three-layer wood-engineered parquet and, in the mid 1990s, the company opened a factory in Dömitz in the north of Germany. Nowadays, Flamingo Parket produces its current products at highly competitive prices. The stress is on producing what clients ask for, even if these are not standard products. Flamingo Parket’s core business is the production of Twin Plank (birch plywood with a hardwood layer on top), traditional parquet floors, and solid wood floorboards. The star product is the Twin Plank with one or more layers of hard wax oil. Company turnover in 2011 was about nine million euros. At present, the company employs 40 people at Barneveld in the Netherlands and 35 in the factory in Germany. Each year, the company produces about 300,000m². In 2013, the company is launching a few new products, including a budget Twin Plank for less than €20 per square metre, but it is also extending its range in top quality Twin Plank in lengths of up to three metres. The company will reveal all at Domotex Hanover in January.

Special Solvent-free Deck joints (kit & roller)

Joint fillers for ship deck joints Decorative and watertight A ship deck floor is one of those rare floors where embellishment and technical excellence go hand in hand. After all, the ship deck technique brings wood into damp areas all the way to the shower cabin. Yet on the other hand, a ship deck floor is pure design, the ultimate exclusivity in a rigid and modern interior, a matchless eye-catcher. Obviously, fitting such a floor (or wall) requires a certain technical caution and, especially, the right products

Pure design To meet the sometimes unbridled expectations of those for whom the budget is subordinate in making a choice, floor fitters have sometimes been assigned jobs with unusual wood sorts, intricate or rare patterns, cassette floors with special woven designs, industrial parquet, and much more. A ship deck floor means one more exclusive product within the realm of ‘chic parquet’. In many cases (and almost always at sea), such floors are designed in teak, but other sorts of wood also lend themselves ideally to this use. Naturally, the yearnings of design lovers extend beyond the bathroom door. There, too, there is a need for exclusivity. Ship deck is quite stunning as a furnishing for shower walls and floors.

Waterproof By fitting ship deck floors in bathrooms, we seem to have thrown all the universal laws of wood moisture resistance overboard. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, but it’s just that you have to interpret those laws correctly. People have always regarded wood as water’s arch enemy because wood swells and shrinks as humidity changes. Those movements increase with the amount of moisture confronting the wood. With a ship deck floor we’re not trying to change the wood’s attitude and neither do we want to protect the wood from it. On the contrary, we let the wood ‘go its own sweet way’. We leave the wood to swell and shrink in peace, but we also

visit the new www.floor-forum.com

The technique in a nutshell In previous editions we have considered at some length the do’s and dont’s of ship deck floors. Let us summarise briefly. The only difference to a traditional parquet floor is that the floorboards don’t come together sideways, but a joint is left between the strips. It goes without saying that the width of the joint must not be chosen randomly. A general rule is that the width of the joint has to come to about 10% of the width of the floorboard and be at least 5mm. Before we can use a filler kit to do any ‘filling’, we have to treat the sidewalls of the joint first. A special adhesion primer is provided for this purpose. This chore requires a degree of speed. Some systems give you outstanding adhesion of the joint filler to the floorboards if the kit is applied within six hours of the primer. With other systems you have to fill the joint within 20 hours. As soon as the joint is sufficiently ventilated (from the primer), you need to apply a separation or seam tape to the base of the joint. This makes it possible for the whole section to move freely and the joint absorbs the movements of the wood perfectly.

Chimiver Panseri Spa Chimiver presents ELASTOXYL which is a solventfree very elastic single-component high quality silane-based sealant; suggested for sealing of indoor and outdoor wooden floors. Easy to apply. High elasticity for long time, good adhesion on most surfaces, excellent resistance to chemical products. Because of its particular chemical nature, ELASTOXYL does not foam during hardening, has excellent resistance to water and seawater and atmospheric agents. It is available in 4 different colours: black, white, grey and teak and available with different packaging such as cartridge of 290 ml, sausages of 600 ml, pails of 29,9 kg and pails of 250 kg. Before applying ELASTOXYL we always suggest to treat the surface with PRYMER ELASTOXYL which is a primer used to obtain good performance and excellent adhesion on porous surfaces and on greasy wood species (i.e. Teak). PRYMER ELASTOXYL should be used before applying ELASTOXYL. Emfi Emfi has a putty based on silanated polymers, namely Emfimastic Joint de Parquet Noir. This joint kit is ideal for filling ship deck joints indoors. They offer this putty in two separate packs: a 290ml cylinder and a 600ml bag. This joint filler from Emfi is applied without a primer. It is important to apply this product with care and expertise.

Filler kits Filler kits are usually based on silane technology, which has been used in shipping for years and wafted over to the construction industry about 10 years ago. We asked producers what they have to offer.

Bona presents its Bona Deck Master for treating joints on outdoor terraces and ship deck floors. The Bona Deck Master is a single component grout and adhesive based on silane-polyether-pre-polymer. This product has outstanding adhesive properties and can easily be used in terrace plank joints, for the construction of outdoor terraces, and for ship decks. The product runs nicely into the joint and it is easy to remove excess product with a spatula without dissolving the joint. It has to be applied quickly and without the formation of air bubbles. Bona Deck Master is very flexible and sets under the influence of air humidity. The product does not shrink and has high chemical resistance. Obviously, it is resistant to sea water. Bona Deck Master does not contain any silicones, solvents, or isocyanates.

Henkel offers three joint fillers, namely FT 101 Flextec, F 130 Building acrylic, and F 173 Universal Silicon. Before using any of these joint fillers, you must make sure that the substrate is dry, clean, and free of dust and grease. Old fillers and other residual material need to be removed carefully and completely. You can remove grease/oil using Tengit Cleaner PE/PP. To ensure a perfect joint, you are advised to seal off the joint edges with suitable tape. Henkel has a training centre in Breda, the Netherlands, to help you master these techniques. After consultation, they can also arrange training sessions on site.
