Editorial “Huge demand for specialities such as herringbone, Hungarian point, or Versailles” In this article we talk to Steven Otte, manager of parquet manufacturer BJ Parket, about the rapidly growing demand for parquet specialities such as Versailles panels, crosscut, and Hungarian point, as well as the market segment for multi-layer floors where BJ Parket is launching a new range, namely the Duo-Line. “For a few years now, demand for Hungarian point, herringbone, and Versailles panels, sometimes distressed, has been rising steadily. And that growth is continuing because interest is swelling all over Europe, so it’s a challenge for us to keep abreast of that demand. The vast interest in our products Steven Otte (BJ Parket) is, we believe, due to our quality. We offer all those products in 10mm solid wood, always with an excellent wood quality and sort. It’s best to opt for solid wood for this parquet as it’s more attractive and ensures a good cut. At BJ Parket we have the machines and know-how to make such products perfectly. It’s in that context that you have to see the success story of the parquet floor with ‘Pied de Poule’ design by parquet trader Johan Vandenberghe (winner of the ‘Houten Kop’ prize for 2013).” (Editor: see elsewhere in the magazine.)

BJ Parket’s now launching its own multi-layer parquet floor, the Duo-Line.

“That’s right. Solid wood is still important to us, but we want to take advantage of the demand for multi-layer parquet floors. Yet it’s still essential for us to provide top quality. There’s growing annoyance in the industry about the poor quality of Chinese multi-layer floors. The quality of the wood is even in decline, with sometimes even sapwood being coloured over. Parquet traders don’t notice this until it’s time to give the floor its oil finish. People are fed up with such problems. The market’s asking for qualitative multi-layer floors with thick enough top layers. That’s what we’re giving with Duo-Line. Duo-Line offers these floors in variable lengths (so you not see that they are engineered floors) and with a guaranteed selection of beautiful wood: premier, bis, rustic, or farm house. Duo-Line comes in two thicknesses: 18mm with a 6mm top layer, or 13mm with a 4mm top layer and two widths as standard: 180 and 150mm. Various edge profiles such as a shadow joint are possible.”

You’re also exhibiting at next year’s European Floor & Wall Exhibition in Belgium Ghent.

“That’s right. We feel it’s important to present our products there as well and we hope to meet plenty of international professionals who are interested in our specialities. It’d also be helpful to meet top building promoters and architects. We’ve noticed that more and more building promoters are buying our products via our dealers for their building projects. That’s because people are looking for quality when they spend money. Then they can sleep in peace.”

attractive ways. LOBASOL® ActiveColor can be applied with a spray device and the LOBATOOL Wischwiesel, with a TrimPad or with a roller. The waterborne stain is completely odour-free, can be diluted with water and dries overnight. A video on LOBA’s website shows how easy it is to use. After pretreatment with the reactive stain, the parquet or hardwood floor is treated with LOBASOL® HS 2K ImpactOil for natural and reliable protection. A wide variety of customised colors can be achieved by choosing from the ten different colors of HS 2K ImpactOilColor. The various colors can also be intermixed and/or used in combination with LOBASOL® ActiveColor for countless design options that will amaze interior architects and clients. The color of the finished floor always depends on the tone of the wood itself, as well as its structure, porosity, tannin content and sanding finish. It is therefore advisable to create various sample finishes on boards of the original wood until the desired effect is achieved. Application video: http://www.youtube.com/user/ LOBAONTOP1922

The floor is the key design element for any high-quality interior. With LOBASOL® ActiveColor, LOBA is embracing the design trend towards rich color contrasts. The new stain, available in the colours grey and brown, brings out the wood’s natural grain. The stain is suitable for tannin-rich woods, like oak. It can be used for creating natural color effects, such as the look of smoked wood. As a result, lively surface designs are produced: even 3D effects or floors with a rustic, antique look (vintage). The new offices of AGC Glass Europe – a model sustainable project Project Rubio Monocoat (B)

Over 6,000 m2 of oak finished with Rubio Monocoat Oil The development team behind the design and construction of the new head office of AGC Glass Europe has exceeded all expectations with this prestigious project. The impressive building with a total surface area of more than 17,500 m2 in Louvain-la-Neuve reflects the thoughtful and innovative vision of the designers, both in terms of its architecture and its interior design, in which sustainability is the key word.

Centralising the European head offices The main goal of the client AGC Glass Europe was to accommodate the employees of their two European head offices in one new building that reflects the environmental philosophy and expertise of the company. This prestigious project was awarded to the Van Roey Group under the name Bouwteam. In this collaboration, various parties worked together to realise the construction project. The project had to meet stringent criteria and had to be executed at the highest level of quality with regard to sustainability, environmental integration, and zero-energy policy: a great challenge for the architects and contractors.

Glass and wood The beautiful design by Bureau Samyn, in short-term collaboration with BEAI, combines complexity with a simple design and creates a harmonious balance throughout the entire building. All measurements inside the building correspond to a fixed matrix. The offices are centred on an impressive plateau, of which the gallery forms the focal point. The large glass windows allow plenty of light and offer a superb view of the surroundings. BREEAM – ‘Excellent’ From an environmental standpoint and in order to optimise the employees’ well-being, the main element in the interior design is wood. To attain the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certificate, the finishing

Rubio Monocoat Oil: a uniform end result with a natural feel Because the installation and finishing of the wooden elements was to be carried out by various contractors, the finishing product had to guarantee a uniform end result. In addition, the work had to be completed to a tight schedule, for which around 150 specialists were on site during the final phase. Apart from the

fact that Rubio Monocoat Oil 2C contains 0% VOC, it can also be applied in one single layer. Additionally, the B component ensures a short drying and curing time. These characteristics were of crucial importance for a project of this size. After approval was given by all the contractors, all wooden elements, from the reception desk in the gallery to the wood panel flooring, walls, doors, handles, window frames, and stairs, were finished using Rubio Monocoat Oil 2C. In order to preserve the natural feel of the wood, the colour ‘Natural’ was chosen. The aim was not just met, but exceeded, with the whole interior exuding a uniform, serene atmosphere. Since 14 November the 500 employees of AGC have been working in their brand new “Zero Energy Headquarters”. Rubio Monocoat wishes to thank all parties for their trust!

Preserving the appearance of newly sanded oak wood

Company profile WoodCare (DK)

WOCA is now introducing a new industrial oil system for wooden floors that is completely “invisible” and designed to keep the original shades and untreated appearance of an oak floor.

Floor Forum International 64

No floor is more beautiful than a sanded oak floor which is bare and untreated. A floor with this original and authentic appearance can now become a reality in every home, even in a very practical and hardwearing version.

14

WOCA has developed a new wood oil system that is completely “invisible”. This system is designed in such a way that the oil treatment neither affects the original shades and appearance of the oak floor nor does it leave a film on the surface. The oil delays the natural effect of the light, and the newly sanded appearance remains intact for many years to come. However, it is inevitable that traditional wooden flooring oil will cause the wood to turn a light shade of yellow, whereas white pigmented wooden flooring oil will leave colouring agents in the grain so the wood eventually takes on a white colour. The novelty from WOCA consists of two products, since the treatment is in two steps. First of all, the wood should be saturated and strengthened. This is done by using the basic oil, namely WOCA Neutral Oil. After that, the surface becomes strong and dirt-repellant through the use of the maintenance oil WOCA Neutral Oil Care. Both oils are water-based and the whole treatment of the floor may be done in one day.

The treatment ensures exactly the same strength and quality that WOCA wooden flooring oils are renowned for. This means that the floor is protected by saturating the wood and strengthening its own natural properties. The philosophy is that wood in itself is a unique and natural material which possesses a number of natural inner properties that are needed to ensure long lasting durability. These natural qualities only need to be strengthened and stimulated, so that the wood stays constantly in good condition. This is done by maintaining the wood with oils that penetrate deep into the wood and provide new life and energy. This inner strength gives the wood a very hard-wearing and resistant surface and a natural ability to repair itself from scratches, cracks, and pressure marks, for instance. Cleaning the floor is easy with WOCA Natural Soap and the maintenance likewise with WOCA Neutral Oil Care. WOCA is produced in Lunderskov in Denmark, and the new Neutral Oils are delivered both to retail sales outlets and industrial clients. The retail sale goes through our international WOCA partners which you can find on www.woca.dk. For more information, please send an e-mail to info@ttwoodcare. com

New oil wax with WOCA qualities

Whether you wish to treat your wooden floor with oil, lacquer, or wax, you can now get a beautiful and durable solution with characteristic WOCA qualities.

WOCA has had its unique “oil/soap system” as their “DNA”, but also recognizes the visual qualities that the wax gives the wood via the special depth and gloss.

For the first time, WOCA is now launching an oil wax on the market. This means that for oil, lacquer, and wax the company can offer a complete range of quality products for the treatment and care of the wooden floor.

According to WOCA the wood should not be protected, but rather strengthened. The ethos is that wood in itself is a unique and natural material which possesses a number of natural inner properties that are needed to ensure long lasting durability. These natural qualities only need to be strengthened and stimulated, so that the wood always stays smooth and in top condition. This is done by maintaining and rejuvenating the wood with oil that penetrates deeply into the wood and provides new life and energy. This inner strength gives a very hard-wearing and resistant surface, so therefore WOCA Hard Wax Oil also has a completely natural ability to repair scratches, cracks, and pressure marks.

The solution is called WOCA Hard Wax Oil and is a modern oil wax with all the renowned properties of wax. For instance, it makes the work easy and fast; you can apply the oil in one operation and it gives the wood surface an extraordinary depth and gloss. A one-coat system is a major benefit for the floor fitter and will therefore save time and money. In addition to this, the new Hard Wax Oil has been designed with the traditional WOCA qualities. For instance, it penetrates extra deep into the wood and is compatible with the large range of the WOCA care-and cleaning products. WOCA is a Danish producer with clear core values and attitudes as to how the wood can continue to enjoy a long and uncomplicated life in the best possible way. For more than 40 years,

WOCA is produced in Lunderskov in Denmark and the new WOCA Hard Wax Oil is available in 2.5 litre cans. WOCA Hard Wax Oil is also available in an industrial version with further accelerated drying times. The retail sale goes through our WOCA partner’s world wide. Special Parquet on the floor and at the wall

THE COMBINATION OF PARQUET AND WALL PARQUET IS GROWING CHOICE OF MATERIALS IS PURELY A QUESTION OF TASTE The term wall parquet is surely a modern expression for panelling? The only difference between the two terms is that traditional panelling can be fitted in different materials (e.g. MDF, pine, and multiplex) and shapes (e.g. square and diamond), whilst ‘wall parquet’ by its very definition refers to extending parquet to the wall. The effect on the room is still the same in both senses. Wall parquet appears in new buildings as a conscious decorative choice. In renovation it is often the only possible wall finish to eliminate certain technical construction problems. Wall parquet Panelling which consists of solid wood puts us at the heart of the floor fitter’s territory. After all, the fitting certainly bears comparison to that of a floating parquet or wooden floor and the finishing methods are also comparable. Apart from a painted finish, solid wood panelling can also be finished with oil, wax, or varnish and coloured perfectly well with stains. It is advisable to apply the colouring to the solid wood sections before fitting the panelling. Obviously, for panelling we don’t strive for finishes with mechanical qualities to rival those of a parquet finish. Further in this article we cover the different trends. Photo: Chapel Parket

Floor Forum International 64

Sorts of panelling Panelling can be divided up in relation to the material used, but also in relation to the height. The latter in particular greatly affects the room architecturally.

24

Materials Panelling is fastened onto a wooden or metal frame. The material can consist of wooden planks with tongue and groove joints, wooden panels such as triplex, MDF, metal varnished laths, or profiled synthetic panels. In the case of the latter we often see a design with imitations of other materials such as metal or wood. One material which is becoming increasingly popular is foiled MDF. The MDF panels are available in countless decors or fitted with a white foil which can be painted.

The height The height of the wall finish goes by the same rules for panelling and wall parquet. Irrespective of the material used, the height certainly exerts an influence on the spatial perception. Traditionally, we draw a distinction between ‘traditional panelling’, ‘high panelling’, and ‘low panelling’. Traditional panelling is so called because it has a height of about 90-120cm. The panelling forms the underside of the wall, but stays lower than the front. Traditional panelling has a dominant effect. It makes its presence felt in the room and largely determines the sphere. With high panelling the furnishing covers about 4/5 of the wall where it is fitted. High panelling has a furnishing effect and makes the room look lower. Low panelling is usually fitted at a height of 60 to 80cm, depending on the total height of the walls in the room. Low panelling gives the impression that the room is higher than it really is.

Same wood sort? Whether or not the extension of parquet to the wall is calculated to be done in the same sort of wood depends largely on the purpose and taste. Some people make an explicit plea for a clear distinction, for example, by working with a demarcating skirting board in a completely different material e.g. oak parquet, oak wall furnishing, and a skirting board in aluminium or wenge. Others find that the effect of cocooning only really works if the floor simply continues. This means doing away with a skirting board. A strong sales argument which pleads for the use of wood is the fact that wood has a warm feel. One manufacturer has pointed out that this argument applies much more to the floor than the wall. Creating a slight difference by applying a colour variant has also been suggested. Economic ‘threads’ Economic arguments usually also play a part in the choice. The fact that the warm feel of wood applies more to the floor than the wall makes some people wonder whether it is justifiable to use an expensive wood sort such as oak for wall furnishing. Some producers offer a solution: the wooden wall sections are offered in the same identical design (as regards colour and finish) and dimensions as the floorboards, but they are not as thick. This solution draws its inspiration from the fact that wall furnishing doesn’t have the same mechanical requirements as the floor. After all, there is hardly any wear (on the thickness of the plank) since no one walks on the wall furnishing. These thinner designs are not always available in all ranges. A producer offers floor and wall furnishing solely in the same thickness because clients can decide up to the very last moment to furnish the wall as well. Similarly, it is also possible to save on the quality of the finishes for the same reason of mechanical requirements. The finish doesn’t have to be highly wear-resistant.

Financial aspects People tend quite spontaneously to associate wooden wall furnishing with ‘great expense’. However, there are scores of arguments to contradict this thinking. First of all, there is the fact that the choice for wood on the wall means that you need only one professional fitter, so you immediately limit your labour costs. In the case of renovation it will often happen that wooden wall furnishing is simply cheaper than repairing, re-plastering, decorating, or painting a damaged wall. Comfort during the work With some renovation work it is perfectly possible that the home is still occupied during the work and the work is carried out in phases. If, as in the previous example, walls need to be stripped and completely re-plastered, that involves noise, dust, and rubble (which has to be removed). Fitting panelling is a quiet and clean solution and, as we have said above, certainly cheaper. The same reasoning applies if certain utility pipes have to be installed in the wall. That, too, involves grinding, noise, and the inevitable quantity of dust. Final conclusion: parquet on the wall is a good solution for decorative, practical, and financial reasons. With thanks to the following companies for their input: Chapel, Junckers, Bassano Parquet, Europlac, FB Hout, Quick-Step and Lalegno.

Floor fitters gain by this As far as the fitting is concerned, the principle is simple: The wall furnishing is fastened to a frame, with or without the use of a clip system. With various producers the sections for the wall furnishing are designed with tongue and groove. And so, the fitting is ‘right up the floor fitter’s street’. In the case of both new buildings and renovation, the floor fitter has a packet of sales arguments. The warmth of wood We have a client who has opted for a wooden floor. This implies that the client is convinced of the warmth and natural feel of wood. And so, as regards material, the floor fitter doesn’t need to pull out any additional arguments. By convincing the client of the decorative possibilities of wood on the wall, floor fitters have every chance of more turnover from those same clients.

Extended parquet An increasingly popular technique is extending the wooden floor to the wall. The only difference with what we have written above is that you apply the same type of parquet in the same sort of wood to the wall. If we can believe producers (and traders in general), this technique is certainly in vogue, but it is still a niche (as regards sales). Some manufacturers offer the same design in wall furnishing as in floor covering in any case, and this would indicate a certain market interest. The fact that this is usually only for part of the wall means that the volume is rather limited. Suppliers agree on some themes and disagree over others.

YOU CAN ALWAYS RELY ON EPOXY POLYURETHANE GLUES Nowadays, we hear more and more talk about so called ‘hybrid’ glues. Some people think immediately of the latest versions of silane parquet adhesives. However, ‘hybrid’ means that features of several forms of technology are united in a new product. Epoxy polyurethane adhesives are undoubtedly such a combination which brings together the good of both sorts of glue. The big advantage is that this combination adhesive can be deployed for just about all types of floors and wood. In other words, epoxy polyurethane adhesive has an element of ‘playing safe’ about it.

A sublime combination An epoxy polyurethane adhesive is, as the name suggests, a polyurethane glue with epoxy components. Some people call the combination of polyurethane and epoxy the most reliable and result-assured adhesive technology which there is for wooden floors. These adhesives also contain all the good of polyurethane combined with the strong properties of epoxy. The properties and applications of epoxy polyurethane glues vary slightly from producer to producer. The strength of polyurethane The properties of polyurethane adhesive arise from the synthesis of the substance. PU is a co-polymer which consists of hard and soft segments. These segments are created by the reaction of urethane and isocyanate, form a long change, and relieve each other alternately. The hard segments tend to crystallise and form a hard material. The soft segments, considered separately, should form a syrupy liquid. The combination of both segments

ensures that the best properties from both unite together. This is why PU adhesive is very strong and elastic. The versatility of epoxy Epoxy glue is a dual component adhesive based on epoxy and it is used for several applications in industry, in homes, and in aircraft construction. It can be applied as a coating, but also in combination with glass fibres. Epoxy glue is also used as a repair glue in which a solid substance like a filler is used. A hardener is added to the epoxy to create a strong adhesive binding. No moisture barrier! Whenever we talk about ‘moisture barriers’ as preparation for the (excessively damp) substrate prior to fitting parquet, the name of epoxy raises its head regularly. A moisture barrier has to form a barrier between the source of the damp and the wood of a parquet or wooden floor. The moisture barrier has to adhere perfectly to the substrate (covering floor) and, obviously, has to be moisture-proof and watertight. Most moisture barriers consist of dual component epoxy resin. Epoxy moisture barriers can usually be deployed with a residual moisture percentage of about 4 to 4.5%. The epoxy components in the adhesive combination under discussion here certainly give the glue properties (once it has set) to avert moisture, but they cannot be regarded as moisture barriers. Fitting a moisture barrier and glueing parquet are two different functions, two different responsibilities, and two distinct product types with different norms as far as performances are concerned. A selection from the market range Adesiv Adesiv was one of the First producers in Europe to present dual component epoxy polyurethane adhesives. These glues are still one of the strong points of Adesiv and are the most popular products in more than 25 countries. Euro F1 (solvent-free), Pelpren PL6 (EC1), and Euro 5 (EC1/solvent-free) are 2-component adhesives of epoxy polyurethane. They do not contain water and are specially for glueing wooden floors onto any sort of concrete substrate or onto existing non-absorbent floors such as marble, tiles, Palladian, and wooden substrates). The adhesives are suitable for glueing pre-finished wooden floors

At the edge … TV 218 revised The popularity of wood has ensured a vast growth and diversification of the market range which endeavours at all times to meet the increasingly higher demands as regards appearance, plank dimensions, and health. This diversification has occurred in just about all groups of materials with which floor fitters can be confronted: substrates, wooden floor coverings, adhesives, and finishes. All these innovations have ensured that floor fitters can now choose from about 1,900 (!!!) possible product combinations. Moreover, this wealth of choice is coupled to an important variable factor, namely the product brand. These modifications have caused the floor fitting profession to develop constantly and have ensured that it has become more and more specialised. All this has led to an actualisation of technical reference documents. The Parquet work group of the BBRI has therefore commenced with the revision of the TV 218 ‘Wooden floor coverings: wooden floors, parquet floors, and veneer floors’ from 2000. This TV keeps the industry informed of the rules of the trade and offers accurate technical information about product families and fitting techniques without a commercial bias. This TV 218 gives floor fitters an overall view of all adhesives and their applications. (Source: BBRI)

Chimiver Chimiver has three epoxy polyurethane adhesives in its range, namely the Adesiver 501 EP, the 2-component adhesive Hercules, and Sigol. The Adesiver 501 EP is an epoxy polyurethane glue in two components (ratio 9/1). This glue is ideal for glueing traditional parquet and pre-finished parquet floors in all dimensions or types. It can be deployed on cement covering floors, waterproof cement and non-absorbent substrates such as ceramic tiles, marble, or porcelain tiles. Adesiver 501 EP can be used in combination with floor heating and offers outstanding adhesion in all cases. Adesiver Hercules is also a dual component epoxy polyurethane glue, but it has specific hypo-allergenic properties. This product does not contain any isocyanates or volatile solvents. Hercules is EC 1R certified. Since this glue does not contain any water at all, it can be deployed for the direct glueing of just about all sorts of parquet onto the subfloor without the need for a mezzanine floor (e.g. mosaic or OSB). It is also recommended in combination with floor heating. Finally, Sigol is also a solvent-free, dual component epoxy polyurethane adhesive. All these glues are odourless. Kerakoll Greenbuilding Company The Kerakoll Green Building Company 2-Component SLC Eco L34 Ep-PU adhesives are hard-elastic, water-free and isocyanate-free glues which set as a result of a reaction from the A and the B components. The 2-Component SLC Eco L34 adhesives from Kerakoll can be applied to all substrates, wood

sorts, and sizes. In the event of residual moisture between 2 and 5%, anhydrite, Fermacell, or a dusty and non-compact floor, you will need to apply SLC Eco EP21 as a moisture barrier or use a primer. The main advantages of the SLC Eco L34 are as follows: They do not contain isocyanates and nor is there any indication that they are carcinogenic as with conventional 2K PU adhesives. It is easy to wash the glue off your hands, glue marks can easily be removed from finished parquet, and the glue can be used as a levelling compound and is easy to spread. Moreover, SLC Eco L34 is very strong and hard-elastic. The glue colours are oak for light wood and mahogany for dark wood. Within the SLC Eco L34 line, the SLC Eco L34 Plus is the solvent-free version which complies with Dutch VOC legislation and has the EC1 Plus certificate. Over 50% of all parquet adhesives produced by the Kerakoll Greenbuilding Company belong to this 2K EP-PU family. Tover

Two-component epoxy-polyurethane adhesives still represent an excellent compromise and combination between high adhesion performances on any type of support and a competitive price. Even if less elastic than silane based products, Tover adhesives are suitable to bond on under-heating systems even big dimensions boards. TOVCOL TP2C (solvent free and odorless) and TOVCOL T.A. are very efficient products and thus much popular also for small and medium sized floors, thanks to their long working time (around 2 hours) and a good yield. They are also particularly easy to mix and apply. Moreover Tover proposes an exclusive packing system for its two-component adhesives: “Twin-Pack System” where the B component is put inside the A bucket cover. Easy, practical, clean, it represents a real revolution both in the products palletizing for transport and in the use of the products themselves.

onto concrete sand-cement covering floors or existing non-absorbent floors such as marble, tiles, Palladian, and wooden substrates. The sometimes extremely ‘volatile’ tropical wood sorts are no problem for these glues and it is also perfectly possible to combine these glues with floor heating. These adhesives are odourless and do not contain any health warnings.

EPLF- Rustic laminate floors with texture Grey and beige tones as trendsetters European laminate flooring manufacturers are kicking off the new laminate flooring season with a wealth of creative decoration ideas. Light and medium earth tones like “greige” are now the order of the day for flooring, while larger and wider sizes are bang on trend. Modern yet rustic boards appeal to the senses with their distinctly tactile textured surfaces, installed using innovative synchronisation technology. “Rusticity” remains the key theme in current laminate flooring ranges. Oak continues to dominate wood decors with its almost inexhaustible decorative potential. Yet floors with the appearance of delicately-grained ash or elm, or rich softwoods such as spruce and larch, are also rapidly gaining in popularity. In general, demand for decor that resembles elegant wood varieties is on the rise. Meanwhile, dark colours have seen a slight decline, with the collections of European manufacturers instead presenting a varied spectrum of natural grey and beige tones – a trend that originated in the field of interior decor and which is now taking international flooring markets by storm. All types of surfaces, from A to Z A considerable amount of wood decor in the laminate sector no longer appears in its “natural” version, but rather with a discreet white or grey haze. The rustic “used look” appears in several varieties of commercial products, from construction timber styles with imitation cement traces, to laminate flooring that feels brushed, planed or freshly sanded. Modern synchro-pore printing enables the authentic transfer of a wide variety of surface structures, from fine veins and pores to deep, distinctive knots. This rustic nature particularly comes into its own in the new rural-style wooden floorboard collections, which are increasingly being offered in longer and wider floorboard sizes. Several European manufacturers and suppliers, grouped together under the association EPLF (European Producers of Laminate Flooring), will take advantage of Domotex 2014 and the second Wood Flooring Summit in Hannover to showcase their latest products. Here, visitors can explore a whole host of creative design possibilities and discover the newest technological innovations in European laminate floor production.

Special Solvent-free Deck joints : kit & roller

FITTING A SHIP DECK JOINT A COMBINATION OF PRODUCT AND TECHNOLOGY MAKE THE FLOOR WATERTIGHT Elsewhere in this edition of your trade journal, we’ll show you that ship deck floors are on the increase. Why’s that? Because ship deck floors are simply gorgeous as well as being pure in design, warm, a little bit playful, and very exclusive. However, the ship deck principle is also increasingly being used as a ‘watertight’ ( floor and wall) covering for damp or very wet rooms. When ship deck floors are fitted for decorative reasons (e.g. in the living room), the joints will have to be finished nicely from an aesthetic point of view. If, however, ship deck flooring is going to be used in very damp rooms (e.g. bathroom or shower), the fitting has to be perfect to ensure a watertight floor. consideration and to ensure that the wood has some ‘space’. Even with byproducts (such as glues), this should be taken into consideration. In other words, moisture and wood are not compatible, but the way in which wood swells and shrinks should be taken into consideration when it is used.

Water and wood Time was when boats were made solely of wood. Roman galleys, medieval galleons, these were all decorative vessels that sailed the seas all the time. Yet we were constantly saying that wood and moisture don’t mix. Wood reacts to moisture, even to air humidity (albeit minimally). Wood swells and contracts, but we all know that. And so, we’ve learnt to take that into account, or even to put it to good use. Let’s just put everything in context. Taking moisture into consideration If a wooden floor (or even laminate) is fitted without any expansion joints or without a (defined) minimum space between the floorboards, then the wood has nowhere to go when it expands. The only option is to swell or crack. By now, everyone should be aware that you have to take this effect into

Using the moisture The principle of the seaworthiness of wooden ships is based partly on the fact that wet wood swells. When a wooden boat is in dry dock, there is a real chance that it is not 100% watertight. Once the boat has been launched into the water, the wood absorbs water and swells and the planks, as it were, stick together. The same principle is used with wine barrels. The loose planks of a wine barrel are held together with steel rings. When the vessel is filled, the wood expands to make itself watertight. Wood in the shower Wood shower trim is increasingly creating a stir. Here, we’re rather forgetting the fact that teak is mainly used for this purpose. When creating a shower enclosure or shower tray, we operate on the basis of the above-mentioned principle whereby we have to take account of how wood swells and shrinks. We do so by leaving a spacious joint (in parquet terms) so that the strips can swell and shrink smoothly. Product and installation technology go hand in hand.

visit the NEW www.floor-forum.com - Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+

The joint width The parquet strips are glued directly onto the screed, an intermediate floor, or, in the case of shower applications, onto the wall (which is plastered with cement). The width of the joints is important for the installation of a ship deck floor or wall covering. This is directly dependent on the width of the strips and is ‘imperative’. In other words, not keeping to guidelines involves risks. In the table below, we have given the ‘minimal’ joint/seam dimensions in relation to the width of the boards. Respecting these minima provides the assurance that the forces exerted by a change in temperature and/or moisture content of the wood can be accommodated.

move. This would make it impossible to guarantee the complete seal of the joint. Applying the tape to the bottom means everything can move freely and the joint completely absorbs the operation of the wood. The insert As we have already said, the sealant is based on MS polymers. You cut the tip of the tube to the desired width. Hold the nozzle against the bottom of the join and keep the gun at an angle of 60 to 80°. Now, moving along the joint in a continuous motion, you apply an excess amount of sealant (10 to 20% excess). Now, the sealant must be pushed firmly into the joint with a filling knife. Once the product has hardened, the excess can be removed using a sharp filling knife. After three to seven days, depending on the product used and the environmental conditions, the ship deck floor (including joints) can be sandpapered.

EMFI EMFI presents a mastic based on silated polymers: Emfimastic Joint the Parquet (colour = black). This sealant is ideal for creating ship-deck joins inside. The mastic is produced in two different packages: the 290ml container and a 600ml bag. The Emfi sealant is applied without a primer. It is important that this product is applied with skill and care. The joint guarantees 100% waterproofness, even in the shower.

PLANK WIDTH JOINT/SEAM WIDTH JOINT/SEAM DEPTH 35mm 5mm 6mm 45mm 5-6mm 6mm 50mm 6-7mm 6mm 75mm 10mm 7mm 100mm 12mm 8mm 125mm 16mm 10mm (Source: ‘Application manual for bonding and caulking of teak decks’ by Simson) Installation conditions The perfect temperature is between 5 and 35°C. During the bonding and sealing of the strips, the relative humidity must be between 40 and 75%. When a ship deck floor is fitted indoors, you have the advantage that the conditions are more or less under control. The moisture content of the wood must be between 9 and 12%. With a higher moisture content, there is the risk that the wood will shrink and the seals will no longer fit. Preparation of joins The flanks of the joints should be clean, of course, and there shouldn’t be any dust in the joints themselves. An industrial vacuum cleaner with high suction capacity is recommended. Once the joint has been cleaned perfectly, the sides should be treated with a special primer. This primer should be applied in one continuous layer without streaks. The key is to work quickly. In this phase, you should be careful not to make it dirty again (e.g. with greasy fingers). Note! For optimum adhesion of the sealant, this must be applied within six hours of the primer drying so that a chemical bond is created. Seam tape As soon as the joint has aired sufficiently (from the primer), a separation or seam tape must be applied at the bottom of the joint. This prevents the sealant from forming a three-point attachment (sides + bottom). A three-point attachment like this could in turn result in stress cracks appearing as the teak parts

The world of silane MS polymers and other silane-based products are still relatively young in the parquet world (about 10 years), but this is not the case in the maritime field, where they have been tested and used extensively for many decades. It is the elasticity of these silane-based products which the shipping world so admires. Here, contact with water is, after all, almost constant and the wood expands and contracts constantly. Silane-based products are used both for bonding strips on a ship deck as well as for finishing the joints.

Exclusive Campine villa (B) gets solid oak parquet with Ciranova finish

Matt and untreated look for solid wood parquet in French oak For an exclusive villa in the Campine woods the client opted for a splendid old oak parquet floor with a unique character thanks to the Ciranova finish. The owners of the villa wanted a rustic, yet natural finish for their wood, so they used Ecofix and Aquafix Magic 2K for the finish. Top finish with Ecofix and Aquafix Magic All together in this villa, the workers had to fit 350m² of solid parquet in traditional noble country house style. First of all, they distressed the parquet and then applied Ecofix and Aquafix Magic 2K. Ecofix ensures that the wood retains its colour. This product is an ecological waterborne impregnation oil for parquet and wooden furniture. Ecofix Wood Look ensures that the wood turns slightly pale so that it retains its natural look for longer.

Floor Forum International 64

Old French oak The interior design and fitting of the parquet floors was entrusted to Europort from Pittem (B). Europort is a specialist in the production of wooden floors, furniture, kitchens, and other items in old French oak. They collect this noble recuperation wood from as far away as the remotest corners of France. The old wood is processed and revamped into solid French oak.

Exclusive finish, low maintenance At Europort, they are fully convinced of the special qualities of Ciranova. Thomas Abeele continues, “For the finish and maintenance of our wooden floors, we opt either for the traditional soap or for the equally attractive, extra matt, and also lower maintenance Aquafix Magic. The floors and the interior furnishing in this prestigious villa demanded a noble finish, but, as is the case everywhere, the low maintenance also plays a part in the choice of finish.”

Floor Forum International 64

Parquet on various floors Downstairs in the villa, the living room and office were fitted with parquet. The exclusive finish gives both rooms a sense of warmth. Similarly, much of the first floor is also decked out with parquet. For example, there is an attractive bar where people can have a chat after playing golf. The distressed floor ensures that the bar comes entirely into its own and offers a pleasant atmosphere.

Ciranova treatment also for parquet and interior doors Apart from the parquet, the workers also finished a solid wood oak staircase with Ecofix and Aquafix Magic 2K. The staircase stands in the middle of the house and connects the three floors. All 21 interior doors were also finished with Ecofix. Thomas Abeele from Europort says, “We did that so that the matt look would match that of the parquet floors perfectly.”.

Project Ciranova/ Debal Coatings (B)

Gloss < 5 After that, they finished the parquet with Ciranova Aquafix Magic, the top product in the Ciranova range. This is an excellent two-component waterborne parquet varnish, which provides invisible protection without the wood discolouring. The gloss from Aquafix Magic is less than five and at the same time this varnish also offers exceptionally high chemical and mechanical resistance, a good tissue, and rapid drying. This makes it ideal also for commercial use.

From a decorative perspective “You either love them or you hate them,” said one of the wooden floor manufacturers with a range which includes ready-made ship deck floors. Obviously, everything is a matter of taste, but that particular manufacturer believes that a professionally fitted ship deck floor has the power to charm lots of people. The maritime sphere is one factor, whilst the design look gives something different. Ship deck floors exude an exclusive look, which doesn’t really involve a great deal of extra cost. Surely that’s a welcome bonus? For modern settings We tend quite often to recommend certain types of floors for each interior. For example, we have often said that herringbone or Hungarian point are just as suitable for a rustic setting as for an austere and minimalist interior. For herringbone floors we think particularly of a more modern and youthful design because these types of floors always have something light-hearted about them. Various wood sorts Originally, teak was the preferred wood for completing a ship deck floor. Today, it is still the most popular sort of wood for this purpose. However, the origin of that choice can be found in the technical properties of a ship deck floor, particularly its moisture-resistance. Where moisture is not a major factor, the floor can be fitted in other sorts of wood with no problem at all. Many manufacturers offer ship deck floors in both solid wood and multi-layer. Also in laminate The very fact that laminate producers have also created a range in this field proves that ship deck floors as ‘decor’ do find an echo on the market. We can even identify two different sorts. Some laminate floors are a pure imitation of a ship deck design. In other words, planks alternating with joints are part of the decor (so even the joints are ‘pressed’). Other laminate manufacturers present a real ship deck floor system which is fitted in the

same way as a solid wood or multi-layer floor, with or without an integrated joint. And so, here the joint really is a technical component and not a design. The importance of the joint Elsewhere in this edition we consider the ship deck joint in more depth. In this article our main stress is that a ship deck floor which is fitted in line with the rules of the trade can most certainly be used in bathrooms and even in showers. The principle is simple: The ship deck joint absorbs the swelling and shrinking of the wood. Some wood sorts (especially teak) do not need an extra treatment. For other types of wood manufacturers recommend sealing the planks, including the sides and ends. Fitting method and cost price The fitting method for a ship deck floor is determined by the type of floor. We can identify four types: - Solid wood profile: With this type, the floor consists of solid wood strips which are glued onto the substrate at regular intervals. The joints are then sprayed with a flexible filler (see elsewhere in this edition) and sandpapered, just like any other wooden floor. With this type, the fitting is a little more expensive precisely because of the extra work which the joint involves. - Multi-layer parquet: Strictly speaking, the fitting method is the same as with solid wood. For both solid wood and multi-layer floors, this work should be done by a fully qualified professional. - Integrated joint: With both solid wood and multi-layer floors we find traders who present a ship deck floor with an integrated joint. Obviously, this removes the need for the extra work on the joint and the cost price is thereby lower. Furthermore, the fitting does not require any extra expertise. These floors are also fitted in the traditional manners, either fully glued, floating with a clip system, or nailed. - Laminate: With ship deck floors in laminate the joint is usually designed with a rubber strip. The ends certainly need to be sealed.

Strolling around in a marina always gets us dreaming away. From small sailing vessels to giant luxury yachts, the sea has a drawing effect. Just as parquet in a home provides its fair share in the sphere and look, a ship deck floor also helps to determine the ‘class’ of a vessel. They’re available in all types and fitting patterns, from basic planks and straight strips to even herringbone or fully customised designs. This technique has also been applied in homes over the past few decades. You either like it or you don’t, but it is completely exclusive. Moreover, ship deck floors are a floor fitter’s gateway to the bathroom.

Special Ship deck parquet

Generally speaking, we can say that a ship deck floor will prove to be a little more expensive than other floors. Even with floors with an integrated joint, there is the fact that these floors are often fitted in bathrooms where the restricted space makes the work a little more difficult. The fitting usually requires more sawing (and therefore loss of wood). A rival of tiles Ship deck floors open up another market segment for floor fitters. They can conquer the bathroom. The sales arguments are quite obvious. They can take advantage of all the benefits of wood. The ‘warm’ feel of wood is always a strong point in comparison to the feel of a tiled floor, certainly in the bathroom where people often walk barefoot. An important aesthetic argument is the look of the maritime sphere. The combination of wood and water holds its own perfectly well here. In some respects, a ship deck pattern gives a holiday feel. Moreover, the alternation between strips and the dark joints makes the room look more spacious. The bathroom looks bigger than it really is, and that also gives a feeling of comfort. It is therefore advisable to display a fitted ship deck floor in the showroom. A demonstration to scale will probably have the same effect. A selection from the range We enquired about the popularity of ship deck floor amongst some producers/sellers. Some of them consider it to be a real trend, whilst others told us that sales are still fairly marginal. Nevertheless, we still have the impression that if laminate manufacturers are offering ship deck floors purely as decor, there must be a market for it. After all, laminate manufacturers are usually perfect trend watchers and indicators of preferred tastes. BJ Parket Ship deck is a profile which BJ Parket has been offering for about 20 years. They don’t regard it as a trend, but they do get regular requests for strips in Old Flemish style. It is fitted in the same way as strip parquet, but the joint has to be sprayed and sanded with the floor. These floors are fitted mainly in the bathroom. The most important wood sort at BJ Parket is teak or any wood sort which resembles the colour of teak.

Design Parquet

38

Design Parquet presents a ship deck floor with integrated joint. This Navylam+ is no more difficult to fit than any other parquet floor, precisely because of the integrated joint. These floors are ready for fitting and are on offer in seven wood sorts, namely acacia, iroko, wenge, doussie, teak, mutenye, and afrormosia. The Navylam+ is a 100% solid wood floor. That is precisely why it feels warmer than a tiled floor, for instance. The company also promotes the easy maintenance as a strong point.

Junckers At Junckers demand for ship deck floors is rather limited, but they do sometimes carry out attractive and extensive projects with this type of floor. For example, Junckers has recently supplied the Yacht Club of Monaco with a ship deck floor in oak of about 3,000m². The fitting is simple, since here, too, the ‘ship deck’ option is integrated into the floorboards. The floors are fitted glued, floating (with clip system), or nailed. Junckers’ ship deck floors are in solid wood. The most popular sorts of wood are oak, beech, jatoba, and ash. Lalegno At Lalegno they have readymade parquet floors equipped with the characteristic shadow joint, which is so typical of ship deck floors. These are multi-layer oak parquet floors which are 15mm thick, have a top layer of 4mm, and are available in three different widths (148, 189, and 240mm), so very attractive combinations are possible. The floors are not yet treated with oil or varnish, so the floor fitter can always achieve a magnificent and unique end result with the floor. Although this is (presently) only a small niche market, the company has noticed a slight rise in demand for this type of floor. Parqueterie Berrichonne Ship deck parquet here is not so much a trend as a niche. It appeals particularly to people with a high budget, certainly when it comes to exotic wood sorts such as teak. As an alternative to the nevertheless labour-intensive traditional fitting (parquet fully glued, spraying joints, drying, and sandpapering), Parqueterie Berrichonne presents a ship deck floor in teak with integrated joint. Fitting this floor does not require any special skills on the part of the floor fitter. In bathrooms you must make sure that the temperature is about 20°C and the air humidity around 50%. Good ventilation is also important. This ship deck floor is in solid wood and consists of teak from Costa Rica (FSC) and Indonesia.

Quick-Step

PlyQuet/ Teka Parquet At Teka Parquet they have only a very limited demand for ship deck floors. These floors can be fitted just as easily as other floors because they are supplied ready-made. These floors are multi-layer and the sorts of wood on offer at Teka Parquet are oak and merbau

Yepp Ship deck parquet is certainly not a trend at Yepp. Clients request it only in exceptional cases, and even then mostly for small surfaces such as bathrooms. It is a little more expensive to fit such floors because of the additional tasks, namely priming, sealing, and sanding the joints. Yepp offers ready-made floors in solid teak. The combination of the wood sort (teak) and the complete sealing of the joints makes these floors ideal for damp rooms. However, most people buy them for aesthetic considerations.

Special Ship deck parquet

The laminate collection from Quick-Step includes a ship deck floor in the Lagune collection. This is the only laminate floor with a bathroom guarantee, but QuickStep does not see it as a real trend. They told us: “People either like it a lot or they don’t like the black rubber groove.” The fitting method is more expensive because you have to install a rubber strip and the head sides need to be sealed with a seal & click product. Quick-Step offers this ship deck floor in palladian, merbau, and teak. QuickStep uses three main points in its sales promotions, namely that this floor is waterproof, low-maintenance, and warmer than tiles.

Special Levellers for LVT, PVC and vinyl

LEVELLERS FOR VINYL AND PVC AND LVT THE SMALLEST BUMP STILL SHOWS Almost all screeds, whether new or renovated, inevitably display small or major flaws. A screed has to meet certain demands as regards density, compressive strength, porosity, strength, and, of course, evenness. Those demands can vary somewhat, depending on which floor we intend to fit. A number of preparatory operations/products give greater certainty of a perfect end result. This is something which needs explaining properly and comprehensibly to clients because at the end of the day they see no reason for all those expensive products. Screed preparation A screed is a mixture of sand and cement. A solid and serviceable screed must be prepared in the correct dosage (300 to 320kg of cement per m³ of sand is usually a good dosage). If you don’t add enough cement to the sand, the screed will never be strong and will tend to stay powdery. Hardly a solid base for glueing, that’s for sure. If we assume that most new screeds (in new buildings) are mixed mechanically, problems will occur more with renovation. A leveller is used to ensure that the screed is perfectly smooth and to eliminate unevenness. Certainly with flexible floor coverings this is absolutely essential for a perfect end result. However, before we start levelling, some other operations may be necessary.

Floor Forum International 64

Porosity Especially with renovation, we may encounter differences in the porosity of the screed. This might be a result of the removal of old floor coverings. We need to ensure uniform porosity everywhere before we apply a leveller. Excessive porosity can result in localised absorption of water from the leveller (by the screed). It is perfectly possible to eliminate differences in the porosity by using a primer. The primers on the market are easy to spread and ensure that the absorbent capacity of the screed levels out so that later the glue, or first the levelling agent, can adhere strongly everywhere.

40

Strength of the screed We all know that adhesives and materials (parquet and other sorts of floors) exert a certain force on the screed. A screed reinforcement is deployed if the screed does not have the strength required to cope with the forces of wood and adhesive, for instance. And so, it is entirely out of the question to glue a floor onto a powdery screed. Screed reinforcements are entirely fluid so that they are capable of saturating the micropores of the screed completely. Levelling compounds Below we listen to the remarks of some well known players from the sector. We asked them whether or not there are any other levelling compounds more specifically for these types of floors. Some traders promote special products, whilst others recommend the same levellers which are used for parquet.

Everyone agrees on one thing: Flexible floor coverings require a perfectly level screed even more than parquet or laminate, for instance. A number of requirements apply to all levelling agents. The products are highly fluid so that they form an identical level of their own accord, but in view of the fast setting it is advisable to extend a little help towards that self-levelling character in the form of a spatula or a wiper. And so, it is best never to mix too much leveller, and certainly no more than what you can spread in 15 to 20 minutes. The time required to glue the levelling compound varies from 2 to 30 hours. That is usually also the time required to apply a second layer of leveller if you need to eliminate a bigger difference in levels. Most levellers have a filling capacity of 1-10mm per layer. With several layers it is necessary with some brands to sprinkle quartz sand between layers. The time within which a floor can be walked on after the fitting varies from one to three hours. Voices from the industry Adesiv Since flexible types of floors have a limited thickness, they need to be fitted on a perfect substrate. There are special levelling compounds for such floor coverings. Important points to look out for in the choice of a product are its fluidity and ease of application. The most important ingredients are cement and, sometimes, reinforcement fibres. Before you apply a leveller, always check the dampness of the covering floor, which has to be less than 2% (below 0.5% with anhydrite). The surrounding temperature has to be between 15 and 25°C, whilst relative dampness must not exceed 75%. If the substrate emits dust, it is better to treat it in advance with Pavilast K. You can also add ADECON K500 to Pavilast R to improve spreadability.

Special Levellers for LVT, PVC and vinyl

Henkel Levelling compounds for a parquet floor need a high compressive strength. This may sometimes also be necessary with LVT/PVC floors, if, for example, we are talking about a floor in a hospital (heavy hospital beds and such like). In other cases a lower compressive strength will suffice, so we use a different type of levelling compound. What do you need to look out for? Firstly, you need to check the subfloor. For example, there are special anhydrite levelling agents for anhydrite floors, whilst the normal cement-bound levelling compounds suffice for cement covering floors. Then you need to check how thick the layer has to be for levelling (in order to level out any unevenness in the substrate). Levelling compounds are available in various layer thicknesses. Finally, the end floor (carpet, PVC, or parquet) also plays a part: depending on this, there are various levellers available with various compressive strengths (C25-C30 etc.) and bending tensile strength (F6-F7 etc). You need to apply a primer before levelling to bind the dust and remove the suction effect of the subfloor. Star products at Henkel are the primer R766, the levelling compound XXL, and the PVC adhesive K 188E. Mapei Vinyl tiles can be fitted on all Mapei levelling compounds. The Mapei assortment includes a levelling compound for every floor. Your choice depends on the required layer thickness, the desired compressive strength, and the floor to be fitted. The main added value within the Mapei package of levellers is that it is possible to treat several different floors with just a few products. The levelling compounds used for vinyl and PVC are the same types as those used for parquet, even though for parquet people will opt for a product with higher pressure resistance. The latter, together with the floor properties and the product consumption, is an important benchmark for the choice. Before you apply these levellers, you must apply a primer in order to ensure perfect adhesion. Mapei presents the Eco Prim T as a primer. The star levelling product is the Ultraplan.

Floor Forum International 64

Sika

42

According to Sika, it is possible to use the same dust-free and self-levelling leveller for levelling flexible floor coverings as is used for parquet/laminate. This is deployed for 0.5 to 15mm (per layer). An important question in the choice of the product is ‘whether or not a scorched layer can be made’ to wrap up the adhesive residue and prevent air bubbles from the substrate. To this end, Sika presents the Sika Viscobond, 3.5l of which, together with 6.5l of water, is suitable for 25kg of levelling grout. Obviously, the fluidity, drying time, the dust-free issue, and such like are important features to look out for. Sika also recommends a primer to obtain

an impervious surface with a view to strong adhesion. In this connection Sika presents different star products. Sikafloor® Level 30 is a levelling grout for indoors and outdoors for larger spaces. Layer thicknesses vary from 4–30mm. Sika® Level 300 Extra: This is a dust-free self-levelling leveller for use as 0.5 – 15mm. This is for layer thicknesses of 15 – 30mm with added quartz sand (for indoor use only). Level 300 Extra is the best selling product in this group. Finally, Sika® Level 315 F is a dust-free, fibre-reinforcement levelling compound for difficult substrates such as on parquet. Soudal/Rectavit Soudal is launching two types of levellers on the market, namely one for LVT and one for parquet as well as LVT with swivelling wheel pressure resistance. The demands which a glued LVT floor puts on the substrate are less severe than those of a glued parquet floor. The movement forces of a (solid wood) parquet floor are much greater so that the levelling compound onto which it is glued must have sufficient cohesive strength. LVT hardly works into the substrate at all. Swivelling wheel resistance is then very important with LVT because the floorboards pass on this “point pressure” to the substrate. Furthermore, it is best that any levelling compound shrinks as little as possible as it sets and runs as fluidly as possible when it is applied. Indeed, it must be possible to apply levelling compounds in one spread up to a prescribed height, so they have to be self-flowing and capable of being pumped. There has to be enough open time to apply the product, but the setting nevertheless has to be fast enough so that you can then apply the LVT adhesive and the LVT. The main raw materials of these levelling compounds are cement, additional binding agents, silica, and additives to improve the flow and offset any shrinking. Stauf Stauf offers various solutions for levelling floors. Stauf SPP 95 is a high-quality cement-based leveller. The product is self-levelling and can be pumped. It provides a perfectly smooth surface with great strength and flexibility. Stauf SPP 95 reduces tension and dries quickly. The product also has low emissions (EC-IR plus). IBOLA AS is also cement-based (EC-IR plus) and is for elastic floors, textile, and wooden floors. This product, too, has good fluidity properties and dries quickly. IBOLA GS is a Universal levelling compound based on calcium sulphate-hemihydrate which can also be deployed for multi-layer parquet. Finally, IBOLA RM is a stable repair and levelling compound (EC-IR plus) which dries extremely quickly and can be walked on after just a few minutes.

LAMINATE JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER

Laminate flooring is getting better, and no one can argue about that. By ‘better’, we mean more features and characteristics. Gradually, it’s nearing visual perfection. Laminate is often indistinguishable from wood and this has a lot to do with the surface technology. This same technology also ensures that the strength and scratch resistance of a laminate floor are exceptionally high. In addition, manufacturers are continually focusing their attention on the click systems so that they are always more ‘fitted’ and easier to use. Ease of installation is key! Then there are those high traffic floors whereby laminate also conquers commercial premises.

Special Laminate floors : part 3

SURFACE TECHNOLOGY AND CLICK SYSTEMS ARE STILL A CHALLENGE FOR R&D

Surface technology One of the areas where considerable efforts have been made (and are still being made) is the surface of the laminate floor. Such efforts are focused at two levels. Some innovations improve the wear resistance (and therefore the durability) of laminate floors so that they can be fitted in high traffic areas. Other innovations have a direct impact on the look and feel of the laminate, thereby reducing the difference with real wooden floors even more. The wear resistance Nearly all laminate manufacturers have a collection that is designed for high traffic. These floors have an exceptionally high wear and scratch resistance allowing them to be fitted in shops, offices, showrooms, and other similar locations. Most of these floors belong in the 33 or even 34 category. However, in the case of laminate floors for household usage, we have also seen a radical upgrade to the top layers. The classic UV lacquer layers are increasingly enhanced by adding certain ingredients that provide them with greater scratch or wear resistance.

Decorative It all started with a simple picture. Over the past few years, pioneering work has been undertaken to change not only the appearance, but also the feel of laminate flooring drastically. The application of different degrees of gloss or refined tints accentuates the grain and design of the wood, so that ‘picture’ of yesteryear looks more and more like real wood. Nowadays, the effective presentation of the grain with a structure in the printing process only serves to make the similarity even greater, and the surface also feels like the wood that is being copied. This technology is called ‘embossed in register’ and is perhaps the greatest innovation of recent years. Sales arguments We asked the manufacturers for the main sales arguments that a floor fitter can use to persuade a client to choose laminate. There was a considerable consensus. The three main selling points are the rapid fitting, low maintenance, and the extremely extensive range of decors. The latter argument takes the biscuit: no single floor type offers such a variety of woods, colours, finishes, gloss levels, dimensions, or sizes. Therefore, there is a

laminate floor for every taste and interior. Moreover, laminate is being promoted as the best choice for young people who, on the one hand, have to take a budget into account and who, on the other hand, have to take young children into consideration as they are particularly taxing on floors. The fact that laminate can be replaced many years down the line without major demolition work and therefore without too much dust is also a frequent asset.

44

Latest innovations from the Top Laminate producers As we have already said, the research and development departments of the laminate manufacturers never sit still. We did a survey of recent innovations as well as advantageous elements. Balterio The key innovations at Balterio whereby this laminate equals the look and feel of parquet are the ‘True-to-nature ‘finish’, the ‘Chrome Zone’ finish, the 3D wood effect and foil-coated V-groove. Balterio recommends not fitting laminate in the bathroom, as the HDF base will always swell on contact with water. Balterio stands out from other brands in terms of style (decors in all styles, wood types, sizes, and with or without V-groove), quality, and simplicity. With regard to this quality, Balterio uses only the best Epicea (spruce) wood for the production of HDF, pressed to a density of 895kg/m³. For high traffic areas, Balterio offers the Traffic collection. EPI Flooring In the field of surface technology, EPI Flooring presents its ‘stratochrome’, a structure with three levels of gloss to bring out the wood grain even better. The ‘matt wood’ structure also helps to provide a perfect imitation. For fitting in damp areas, EPI Flooring offers the Alsamousse Aluminium subfloor and the Clickseal expansion joint that is placed between boards. EPI Flooring has recently launched its new Zup’n’go locking system, a clip system for an even faster and simpler installation without the use of tools. For high traffic areas, there are ranges of 12mm thickness in class 23/33 with an AC6 wear resistance in the line: Solid Medium, Solid, Solid Plus, Medina, and Forte. Haro Haro has positioned its laminate flooring as ‘The Laminate Floors from the Parquet Specialist’. When manufacturing laminate, the brand relies on its experience and trends in the flooring industry, and some laminate floors are even direct copies of their own parquet flooring. With regard to the printing plates,

Haro offers nine different surface structures ranging from ‘authentic’ to ‘pores rustic’. A considerable innovation is the XL board Gran Via which is as such in a class of its own. Haro does not have a laminate for damp rooms. A special innovation is the ComforTec technology where Haro has achieved a sound reduction of 60% (sound in the room) in comparison to traditional floating laminate floors. Haro is top German quality. The company has an extensive range and a worldwide network of dealers. For high traffic, Haro offers the Haro Tritty 250 in 12 different styles. Windmöller Flooring Products GmbH Wineo laminate offers an exclusive wood texture, tactile pores, a dull and rough sawn surface, the authentic join, and ‘embossed in register’. For use in wet rooms, the company presents the ‘wineo edge protection’, a wax/oil protection and special Aqua-Protect core board, HDF-Protect. Wineo laminate is 90% wood and is produced using an ecological method. Special attention is also paid to how the product is recycled at the end of its lifespan. All Wineo laminate floors are category 32. The ariosa, piazza and piazza maxi collections are category 33. They meet all the requirements of a premium floor: DPL + special coating and suitable for machine cleaning. Quick-Step Important innovations in the Quick-Step are the Scratch Guard (10x more scratch resistant surface than competitors) and Uniclic (still a snap join that proves its worth when laying flooring in doorways where you can knock the panels close together). Although Quick-Step already uses a water-resistant HDF base, these laminate floors are not recommended for wet rooms. Only if the four sides are sealed is the floor waterproof, as is the case with the Lagune, for example. The main arguments for laminate here are the convenience in terms of maintenance, the excellent price/quality ratio, and the huge selection of styles whereby it is difficult to distinguish it from real wood. For high traffic areas, Quick-Step offers Majestic Pro (8 and 9.5mm), Pergo Public extreme, and Pergo Original Excellence and Public. These have a wear and tear class of 33 or 34.

Review Domotex Istanbul Middle East (TR)

General satisfaction with Domotex Middle-East Istanbul hosted Domotex Middle East from 7 to 10 November. After the event, the organisers expressed their satisfaction with 180 exhibitors from 16 countries, over 6,000 square metres of exhibition space, and over 4,300 international professional visitors. The diversity and quality of the goods on offer, the prominence of decision makers from all countries in the Middle East, and the packed networking events convinced everyone. Istanbul, Turkey’s biggest city, was hosting Domotex Middle East for the second time. The city can thank the strong economic growth and development of the construction industry for that. The importance of the show could also be seen from the large joint stands which countries like India, China, Iran, and Germany sent. International trade event Martin Folkerts, manager of Global Fairs at Deutsche Messe AG was very pleased after the event. He said: “This DOMOTEX Middle East was an event with lots of international colour. About 50% of the exhibitors were from abroad. The show managed once again to engage with an international public.” All countries from the Middle East Most of the visitors were either wholesalers, retailers, decision makers in the construction industry, interior architects, or project planners. The business delegations came from various countries in the region: Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Oman, Iran, and Iraq.

Ciranova Ciranova looks back on a successful participation at the fair Domotex Middle East. The growing international interest for the different finishing products of our Ciranova-range was shown by the many contacts that we made during this fair. The visitors could have an idea of the possibilities with the different finishes of the unique Ciranova-range that we were showing by the presentation of the samples on our stand. During this fair, we were presenting for the first time the Hardwaxoil Magic SATIN. This fast drying and extreme solid satin oil was very successful by the visitors. Also for the UV-oil there was a lot of interest. The UV-oil from Ciranova has a very natural look and offers an excellent protection, this by simple drying with 2 UV-lamps, which gives the perfect protection and minimum of energy consumption. There were made already different appointments with potential dealers in order to discuss the distribution of Ciranova in Turkey and the surrounding countries. Ciranova hopes in this way to reinforce their distribution network and to be present with a new Turkish dealer on the next edition of Domotex Middle East.

DOMOTEX MIDDLE EAST provided CHIMIVER with an extra opportunity to present to the middle east market its wide range of products for lay, treatment, maintenance and care of any kind of wooden floors both indoor and outdoor. For example, there was a big attention for waterbased lacquers, single component silane based glues and products for treatment of outdoor wood. CHIMIVER established some good links with potential new importers at Domotex Middle East.

Flamingo Parket This was the fourth visit by Flamingo Parket to Domotex, which was held recently in Istanbul. They attended in Dubai the first two times and then twice in Istanbul. Flamingo Parket is a familiar face there, so they were able to hold several good discussions with existing clients, despite low visitor numbers. However, they were a little disappointed with the number of new contacts. They displayed their existing collections in many different colours. In particular, the Twin Plank, with its thinner top layer (3mm), drew lots of interest due to its competitive price. “Too expensive!”That was a frequent lament at the show. However, there is also a market in Turkey and the Middle East

where an attractive product in line with client wishes is more important than just the price.

level, like the Barn and Classic collections, proved to be extremely successful. All this resulted in some very interesting contacts that offer excellent prospects for the future of Lalegno in the Middle East. Neuhofer Holz also presented its new products at Domotex Middle East 2013

Edelco

Edelco produces floor profiles made of aluminium and stainless steel. The company serves both professional and DIY markets worldwide. At Domotex, Edelco displayed aluminium and stainless steel floor and skirting profiles in line with the latest global trends in parquet and solid wood. It introduced anodised profiles in over 40 different wood colours to clients at the exhibition from all over the world.

Neuhofer Holz, the European market leader for flooring, wall and ceiling accessories was also present at Domotex Middle East in Istanbul from Nov. 7th – 10th, 2013 with a trade fair stand (100 m²) and its new products as well as its proven range of FN products. The new products that were presented included the 3-in-1 floor profiles ‘FN sixpack’ in the versions Alu, HDF and Solid. 1 profile for 3 applications transition, movement, end trim, including 2 attachment methods: with adhesive (with which the profile can also be easily used above underfloor heating) and with dowels. The ‘FN Clipholder CH27’ was also presented for joint-free connection of adhesive strips to the wall. The built-in spring supports the clip on the floor, thus allowing the floor to swell and shrink without changing the position of the adhesive strip attached to the clip.

This year was Lalegno’s first participation in Domotex Middle East and it was an instant success. Engineered wooden floors are becoming very popular, also in the Middle East, but despite the large number of competitors, we found that the beautiful colours of our range and the huge variety of Lalegno floors were very well received. In particular, the oak floors with a high finish

Partly because of last year’s success, we had been looking forward to a busy trade fair with lots of interested visitors. Unfortunately, the fair fell short of our expectations. First of all, the venue was a lot smaller this year. Secondly, the organizers had made little or no publicity in Turkey prior to the fair. This resulted in a disappointing low number of local professionals visiting the fair. As far as we are concerned, the trade fair missed its target completely, and therefore we are not planning to participate next year.

Adhesives are split into different categories because they work on the basis of different scientific and technological principles. Adhesive bonding can be created by a physical or chemical reaction between different components. For glueing parquet it is to a large extent the wood sort and the type of substrate that determine the most suitable glue. This is no less the case for glueing flexible floor coverings. Surrounding conditions (e.g. moisture or air) almost always play a part. The principle of emulsion adhesives is that a binding agent is ‘dispersed’ in water. The binding agent (synthetic resin) does its work once the water has disappeared. Emulsion adhesives in general Emulsion adhesives consist of a synthetic resin (binding agent) which is dispersed in water. These adhesives consist of solid matter for 50 to 65%. The most popular synthetic resins are polyvinyl acetate, acrylate, polyurethane, and derivatives from these synthetic resins. In emulsion adhesives an organic solvent is added for special applications to disperse the binding agent (mostly with the use of synthetic resin with a limited melting point). This happens in percentages from 0 to 5. Emulsifying agents, cross-linkers, and preservatives can occur in some branches. Emulsion adhesives set as the water withdraws from the glue to create a film of glue (the water disappears, but the solid substances remain and complete the binding). This means that one of the sections to be glued must be capable of absorbing water. Metal, synthetics, wood, paper, and textile can be glued using emulsion adhesives. Points for attention with vinyl and PVC For the development of adhesives which are suitable for securely glueing flexible floor coverings such as PVC, linoleum, vinyl, and such like, you have to consider different points than those which apply to wooden floor glues. After all, the specific properties of wood are totally different to those of vinyl or PVC. Wood has an open structure, whilst these floors are smooth and closed. Wood is a hard material, whilst these floors are flexible. Since a PVC floor can hardly absorb the moisture in the wood, you need an adhesive which can cope with semi-wet or virtually dry glueing. On the one hand, these materials expand and contract a lot less than wood (so there’s no need to look out for elastic glues) and, on the other hand, the glue has to be strong enough to prevent the seams from eventually becoming visible. To increase the dimensional stability of the adhesive even more, you could add reinforcement fibres to the dispersion. Apart from emulsion adhesives, some producers still promote their universal polyurethane adhesives for glueing flexible floor coverings effectively.

Adesiv

Henkel

For glueing flexible floor coverings Adesiv offers Adetac S, a universal single component acrylic glue of excellent quality and with an EC1 certificate. This adhesive is suitable for glueing all sorts of vinyl, rubber, PVC, linoleum, and textile onto both absorbent and non-absorbent substrates. In contrast to wooden floors, these sorts of floors swell and shrink a lot less, so there is no need for elastic glues. If the condition of the screed requires it (e.g. it is powdery or loose), you should apply a primer in advance. It is also usually advisable to deploy a self-flowing levelling compound to ensure a perfectly even floor.

and semi-absorbent substrates, especially PVC roles or tiles, rubber up to 3mm thick, textile, semi-flexible vinyl, and materials with a cork or PVC base.

Chimiver presents three adhesives for flexible floor or wall furnishings, namely Adesiver RE 400N, Adesiver RE 400/Extra, and Adesiver RE 400/Plus. Adesiver RE 400N is an acrylic adhesive designed specifically for glueing linoleum and carpet onto absorbent substrates. It is a waterborne emulsion adhesive based on acrylic co-polymer. This glue is also specifically suitable for carpet with a stable backing, for linoleum up to 3mm thick, and for vinyl floors with a felt base. Adesiver RE 400/Extra is a universal waterborne acrylic glue which yields excellent results. This adhesive is a thixotropic glue (acrylic polymer) characterised by a high content of dry matter, very good spreadability, and low water content. It is particularly suitable for vertical glueing of PVC, coconut, polyester, and cork. Finally, Adesiver RE 400/Plus is a universal waterborne acrylic adhesive for glueing flexible floor coverings on absorbent

Henkel recommends emulsion adhesives for glueing PVC and vinyl floors, reinforced with fibres, if necessary. In most cases you don’t need a primer for the substrate. Emulsion adhesives can be used on sand-cement covering floors and concrete floors, chipboard, gypsum, anhydrite floor, or on an old PVC floor. In comparison with parquet floors PVC floors can hardly absorb the moisture in the adhesives, if at all. This is why you should opt for semi-wet or dry glueable floors and you allow for a waiting time. Kerakoll Greenbuilding Company Kerakoll offers two waterborne emulsion adhesives for PVC and vinyl. Firstly, there is SLC Eco 45/3 (Greenbuilding Rating Eco 5/ EC1 plus). This glue has a short drying time (requires quick fitting) and is meant solely for absorbent substrates. Then there is SLC Eco Grinkol (Eco 5 and EC1 plus), which has a longer drying time and can be used on non-absorbent substrates. Both adhesives have a consumption of about 200gr/m² i.e. a lot lower than parquet adhesive. These glues are also less elastic than parquet glues. They stick the floor covering securely in place immediately. Once PVC is fitted, it is subjected to heavy pressure. It is advisable to level a subfloor up to at least 3mm before fitting this floor covering. To do this you can use Keratech Eco HP3 (Eco4/EC1), a self-flowing levelling compound for layer thicknesses of 1 to 10mm. Kerakoll Greenbuilding Company has suitable primers (Primer A and Keragrip Eco) for both absorbent and non-absorbent substrates. By way of information we can also say that Kerakoll Greenbuilding Company’s ECO rating is certified by SGS.

First of all, Stauf presents two ready-for-use emulsion adhesives for glueing these floors, namely IBOLA D5 and IBOLA D50. In addition, they also recommend the dual component PU IBOLA R105. These adhesives are Stauf’s answer to the demand for durable and dimensionally stable glue for various types of flexible floor covering. D5 is a traditional PVC/CV unilateral glue which is extremely user-friendly, has a long open time, and ensures fast adhesion. The hard glueing prevents the floor covering from swelling and shrinking and thereby avoids seam formation. The D50 premium product is also an emulsion adhesive, but it is reinforced with fibres for even greater stability. Both adhesives are in the EC1 plus class (Emicode) to ensure healthy surrounds. Apart from those emulsion adhesives, Stauf can also widen the scope of its universal dual component R105 PU adhesive. This glue is ideal for fitting floor coverings in rooms with extreme fluctuations in temperature. This virtually eliminates the possibility of materials shrinking. The glue is suitable for glueing rubber, metal, and sports floors, and even for glueing outdoors (balconies, around swimming pools etc.). None of the above-mentioned adhesives contain solvents. Moreover, they can cope with any softeners which could migrate from some floor coverings. Quick-Step For the Quick-Step Livyn products, Quick-Step recommends using the Quick-Step Livyn adhesive. This is a glue which has been specially developed in partnership with adhesive specialist Soudal for the Quick-Step LVT collection. In developing this adhesive, they have paid attention to the following features: water-resistance (the fact is that a major feature of LVT floors is that they are waterproof), tensile strength, shearing force, easy fitting (is the glue easy to spread?), and dimensional stability. They regard this latter point as a critical factor when it comes to an adhesive for LVT. LVT is a thermoplastic i.e. the floor can swell and shrink as a result of changing temperatures. The most important feature of a good LVT glue is that it has very high dimensional stability. They paid a lot of attention to this point

Tover

Tover has in his range different types of adhesive for resilient floors including PVC and vinyl floorings: Tovcril T57 is an acrylic water-based glue with low Voc content and odor to bond in interior PVC on absorbent and non absorbent sub-floors. Tovcol RP, still acrylic based, can be considered universal as suitable for PVC and vinyl but also rubber, cork, textiles etc. Moreover it is solvent free, odorless and has an excellent adhesion Peel. For both inside and outside use, Tovcol T91, a fluid two-component epoxy-polyurethane adhesive is recommended to bond most type of resilient floorings on any sub-floor. Prior to laying, the use of a primer is necessary to create a vapor barrier to avoid raising damp, to consolidate poor sub-floors and to fix the dust on friable screeds. Tover offers numerous solutions for these purposes: Primer C1, Nano-Fix, Primer PU-100 and Adeblok T19, each with its proper characteristics to solve problems which may appear during the floor laying.

Mapei Mapei offers two adhesives for glueing linoleum floors, namely Ultrabond Eco 520 and Ultrabond Eco 540. Ultrabond Eco 520 is an emulsion adhesive with high initial tack and a very low emission of volatile organic compounds. Ultrabond Eco 540 is a solventfree emulsion adhesive based on synthetic polymers and also has a very low emission of volatile organic compounds. For glueing surfaces such as vinyl, Mapei offers various glues, including the Rollcoll, a universal emulsion adhesive for applying vinyl floor and wall covering and glueing textile floor and wall coverings with any type of back. You need to apply a levelling compound for all these glues once the subfloor has been treated with a primer.

Special Producers of bamboo & palm wooden floors

BAMBOO IS FULLY INTEGRATED ANYTHING IN WOOD IS ALSO POSSIBLE WITH GIANT GRASS Although we cannot speak of bamboo parquet (and we won’t use that expression any more), floors produced from bamboo have been a permanent fixture in the floor fitter’s range for years. Bamboo has largely earned this privilege for itself. In this article we will describe the sphere of an interior where bamboo plays a dominant part: it’s gorgeous! Yet all the intrinsic properties of bamboo form an equally major advantage: Bamboo is strong, rock hard, durable in the ecological sense, and, in particular, available in abundance. The same types of floor often made of wood can also be produced in bamboo, and there is a huge choice. A lesson in decoration Exceptional people usually live in exceptional conditions. A few years ago, we were greatly privileged to step inside the ‘habitat’ of Olivier Bisback, expert martial artist, personal trainer to various celebrities including Jean-Claude Van Damme, stuntman, adviser on the set, and also an actor himself for the past few years. Olivier Bisback is a captivating personality who has completely discovered himself in the harmony of an oriental lifestyle. His house is designed to bring him peace and quiet. The living room is an impressive ‘loft’, built in an existing home. The lounge, dining room, kitchen, and the office are all integrated masterfully.

Floor Forum International 64

Oriental lifestyle As we entered the living room, we were greeted by the steel image of a Samurai warrior and a little further we saw two frightful looking Samuarai swords. Not only is the sphere bathed in the Orient with works of art and decorative objects, but also Olivier and his girlfriend really live an oriental lifestyle. On the vast kitchen block, which is part of the living room, the big round baking tray stands out. This is where they use the wok and grill and bake.

52

An oriental floor Why did they opt for bamboo for the entire floor surface? Initially, Olivier hesitated between bamboo and polyconcrete. Once again, perhaps subconsciously, the master opted for an oriental choice. After all, doesn’t bamboo originate mainly from China where this sort of grass has been used throughout the history of mankind for building and interior applications, furniture, and utensils? One thing’s for sure: polyconcrete would have made the Bisbacks’ living room much less cosy. The floor fitter on call did an excellent job in fitting the bamboo floor over the entire surface extremely precisely and faultlessly. Bamboo as ‘material’ We have written the above piece about the sphere to give floor fitters some inspiration. Clients tend to prefer brick, natural stone, or certain forms of poured floors, especially in large continuous rooms. Parquet and bamboo can vie perfectly well with all those forms. The two main strengths of bamboo are its mechanical qualities and wide variety of floor types.

Mechanical qualities When we examine the mechanical specifications of bamboo, we arrive at surprising extremes. Bamboo is 27% harder than oak and 13% harder than American maple. Bamboo floors also meet the EN 1534 standard, which determines the allocations for parquet and wooden floors. The bamboo fibre has a tensile strength of 40kp/mm² and thereby exceeds most other fibres such as that of wood and even the steel used in the construction industry. Wood fibres have a tensile strength of 5kp/ mm², whilst for steel fibres this is 37kp/mm². With this tensile strength, bamboo is still pliable, light, and flexible. It has a dimensional stability of 0.0144 and is thereby over twice as stable as most wood sorts used in the floor industry. An ecological material Depending on the sort, a tree needs 30, 60, or 100 years before it is ready to be cut. By contrast, bamboo can be extracted every six years. If we extract 20% of a bamboo forest every year, the forest recovers within one year. Bamboo is an easily renewable raw material. Some people call it a ‘saurian’ as it has survived all the known ‘ages’ on this planet. However, we also see that bamboo forests can now be ‘managed’ and exploited in line with a sophisticated scheme and management plan. This makes bamboo even more ecological as a raw material. The assortment As we have said, we find just the same types of floors in bamboo as we do with wooden floors. We list them on the basis of the range of various producers or suppliers. Traditional parquet As with solid parquet, there are also bamboo floorboards which bear the name ‘traditional parquet’ and which don’t have tongue and groove. The traditional parquet floorboards are glued and nailed onto a subfloor. These floors are fitted in the same way as a wooden parquet floor: The rural floorboard In the world of bamboo we speak of rural boards if the floorboard consists of three layers, the middle layer of which is fitted diagonally onto the other two layers, and there is a gap of about 2mm between the strips. The strips of the middle layer increase

the stability of the floor. The rural floorboards are equipped with tongue and groove and can be fitted floating or glued. Duoplank A top layer in solid bamboo wood is borne by a diagonally pressed multiplex panel. This construction also ensures an extremely stable floor. Obviously, the thickness of the top layer determines the durability of the floor. The Duoplank can be fitted either floating or glued (or nailed, if necessary). Wood-engineered parquet Wood-engineered parquet consists of three layers. The top layer determines the durability of the floor. Under a top layer of 4mm of solid bamboo, for example, we find two more fir layers glued crosswise. And so, the middle layer is once again fitted diagonally to give the floor much greater stability. The engineered boards are equipped with tongue and groove. It is advisable with floating fitting to glue in the tongue and groove. Fixed fitting is done by glueing on a subfloor or by nailing invisibly. There is also wood-engineered parquet with Loc systems which make it possible to fit floorboards floating without using glue.

Two-layer parquet (short) Two-layer parquet can also be designed with short floorboards. These floorboards are also equipped with tongue and groove. They are designed for fitting in block patterns or herringbone design. 50% of them have a left-side tongue and groove and 50% a right-side. Solid wood With bamboo, solid really does mean ‘solid’. The floorboards are constructed from one (side pressed) layer or several (plain pressed) solid bamboo layers. The solid wood floorboards can be glued and nailed invisibly or fitted floating with tongue and groove. What’s on the market? Bamboo Touch At Bamboo Touch they have noticed that the market is cleaning up its act to flush out those suppliers who give bamboo a bad name. As far as decorative trends are concerned, Bamboo Touch is seeing a growing demand for white and grey tints. In addition, there is also a strong demand for Bamwood, which has much greater impact resistance than

Two-layer parquet Two-layer parquet consists of a top layer in solid bamboo and a bottom layer which is constructed from diagonally fitted bamboo strips. These, too, are fitted with tongue and groove and can be fully glued onto a subfloor which is flat enough and tensile.

most sorts of wood. Bamboo Touch offers both solid wood and multi-layer. The biggest innovation in the field of technology is the coloured Bamwood. They have found an extensive range of products with a hardness above 8.5 (Brinelle). Lots of tints of grey, black, and other colours are available. Practically 90% of the products leave the factory finished. Buco Import At Buco Import they have seen a growing interest in bamboo. There has been a fall in plain pressed and an increase of density/ cobam. Customised oiling or varnishing is certainly a new trend. Buco Import offers solid wood, HDF, and multi-layer. The main sales argument here, too, is the vast hardness. The rapid growth of bamboo also makes it a durable product. Buco Import supplies a lot of floors untreated so that they can be finished according to the client’s wishes. Clients can also finish the floors themselves, something which is, of course, cheaper. With oiling you need to consider that the oil needs more time to penetrate the wood.

Lalegno

54

At Lalegno, they have sensed a growing interest in bamboo for its natural features and the fact that they lightly carbonate the bamboo. Lalegno tries to transfer to bamboo the light shades which we find in oak. Since Lalegno guarantees stabilised parquet, they have opted for a three-layer construction whereby the company can offer bamboo 2200mm long and 189mm wide. In particular, the Strandwoven (density) bamboo is rapidly growing in popularity. With these types of floors the bamboo strips are compressed in such a way that the fibres undergo a change in form. The result looks very trendy. The design look at the light colour shades (lightly carbonated) appeal greatly to the general public. Typical examples are 15-SW-BAMBOO-JULIETA, 15-SW-BAMBOOROBUSTO, and 15-SW-BAMBOO-TORO. As far as quality and durability are concerned, a bamboo top layer is much harder than oak (oak: Brinell hardness of 34 ad compared to Bamboo 40). Since bamboo is being used increasingly in the most diverse contexts, Lalegno has extended its range to 10 different finishes and colour shades.

Moso International MOSO International was formed in the Netherlands in 1997 and has gone on to become the European market leader and the A-brand in innovative bamboo floor products for both indoors and out. Apart from quality and appearance, durability is becoming increasingly important. MOSO can guarantee that its solid bamboo products are CO² neutral throughout the entire life cycle, and the company can supply them with FSC certificates and 100% formaldehyde-free adhesives. This, in combination with the fact that bamboo is not a tree, but a grass sort with several shoots which are ready to be cut after four or five years, makes it clear that in terms of durability there isn’t a single sort of wood to beat bamboo. Furthermore, the hardness and durability of the last generation of bamboo floors based on extra compressed fibres, known under the brand name Density® (thickness 1050kg/m3), is often a decisive argument. Apart from the vast hardness (1.5 times as hard as the hardest tropical hardwood sorts), the hardwood appearance of this product is also greatly appreciated. As far as the decorative element is concerned, MOSO has introduced a very wide range of new styles, colours, and surfaces, including a brushed version. There is now even a bamboo floor available with the original bark as a top layer, and this is both extremely strong and attractive. WST®: the Palckè®™ Maobamboo® producer WST offers floors produced from the strongest and hardest sort of bamboo, namely Mao bamboo. The company likes to point out that there is a difference between plant-like and woody bamboo sorts. As regards trends, they have noticed different preferences: grey and bleached in terms of colours, smooth or brushed, and varnished or oiled. All colours are possible. WST is presenting three new product Lines, namely Mao Design (4mm tablets and worktops), Stratofix oiled and brushed, or Stratofix varnished with waterborne varnish. WST offers both solid wood and engineered. All floors are pre-finished.

EDGE SANDERS – AS SMOOTH AS THEY COME The myth that a floor fitter could do any sandpapering with one versatile sander has long since been disproved. It is out of sheer necessity that belt sanders for heavy work are followed up by a rotary disc machine to work away the traces of that ‘belt’. Even then, this is done is successive phases and with increasingly finer grains until we get a surface as smooth as glass. There are edge sanders, which, sure enough, are for edges, but also for sanding in corners and places which are hard to reach, such as under radiators and staircase steps. A machine for every job: why not?

Difficult to reach? Edge and stair sanders are equipped with a rotating sanding disc usually of 175mm which is housed in a sanding arm. The limited height of this sanding arm means that these tools can be used for sanding under radiators with no problem at all. Most machines have two different sanding arms, namely a short one and a long one. The lengths vary somewhat from brand to brand, but in recent years we have witnessed the emergence of more really short arms from 110 to 150mm as compared to the normal average length of between 250 and 300mm. Various aspects are obviously related to the historical development of radiators. Whereas a few decades ago radiators were extremely wide and the machine had to stretch far enough to reach the wall under the radiator, modern radiators are now much smaller.

make it possible to turn the machine in all directions with no trouble at all. The Mini Timba can be deployed for both finishing and levelling. It has also been designed for use in small rooms, whilst it also performs excellently over larger surfaces.

KUNZLE & TASIN EDGERS

What’s on the market? Klindex Klindex presents the Mini Timba, a compact but powerful sanding machine with a working width of 304mm. The Mini Timba weighs 31kg and produces excellent sanding results up to close to the wall. Thanks to the two contra-rotating heads, which are perfectly balanced, the Mini Timba is extremely easy to operate, even for less experienced workers. The ball-shaped wheels

The ideal set of machines for floor contractors includes also the so-called edgers. These small machines are needed for edge sanding and finishing jobs along the edges of a room and (according to the design of the tool) of steps.

Full ranges Isn’t it possible to finish a wooden floor neatly using just a single sanding machine? Unfortunately, no, it isn’t. We have already said how the endless belt sander inevitably leaves sanding marks on the floor after the first heavy sanding session. The only way to remove those sanding marks is to follow up that initial sanding by sandpapering with a rotary disc machine, which erases those marks, as it were. Those two sanders are absolutely essential to floor fitters. However, neither of them can be used to work neatly along the walls or in places which are hard to reach such as under radiators. Moreover, those sanding machines are completely unsuitable for sanding staircases. Edge and stairs sanders appear as versatile machines which either can cope with anything or can be converted quickly without the use of special tools, depending on the task in hand. What is also noticeable is that makers of sanding machines, which once specialised in one particular type, now offer full ranges for all sanding.

Check www.kunzletasin.com for any additional details. Janser Janser offers a complete range of edge and stair sanders. For example, there is the Flunder, a handy sanding machine for difficult places. It has a 710KW motor, 115mm ø, and variable speed. It is suitable for tangled material. Then there is the Lupo, a 1.15KW edge sander with extra efficient contraflow discs

and lighting. The Panda is a compact, ergonomic, and powerful stair and edge sander for 150mm sanding discs in two variants: with a 130mm extension and 350mm extension. Finally, Puma is an edge sander with handles which are adjustable in the height and width so that you can sandpaper without kneeling, a sanding disc of 178mm, and a 1.25KW motor. Lägler Lägler presents the Flip, a reputable machine which has now become a permanent fixture in the world of parquet. The Flip guarantees a perfect finish in the corners, under radiators, and on staircase steps. The power of the Flip lies in the motor, which has a huge suction capacity. The fact that the Flip is lightweight is due to the fibre-glass reinforced plastic with which the motor casing is made. This material also ensures greater protection against electric shocks. Ergonomics are also a plus point with this machine. Moreover, this machine has the ‘Wood dust test’ certificate so that it is the only edge sander with integrated dust suction to ensure a dust-free operation (emissions are lower than 2mg of dust per square metre of air). The Flip can be fitted with two extensions and a corner auxiliary piece. Special Producers of Versailles panels

PATTERN FLOORS EXUDE SHEER CLASS According to a number of traders in pattern floors, there is a growing demand for Versailles and other panels. However, just about everyone sees these floors as the preserve of the wealthy. People who choose such floors are looking not so much for the glamour and eccentric party spirit of Louis XIV’s castle, but rather the luxurious and exclusive look of these floors. These floors add a great deal to both rustic interiors and modern settings and they tend to dominate the habitat completely. In view of the sizeable dimensions of the panels, large rooms seem to be the preferred choice. Pattern floors Panel floors or pattern floors are pre-made square panels in which wooden sections are fitted according to a certain pattern. In some respects each panel forms a mini-parquet floor. The sections are sawn and mitred tailor-made and glued to each other sideways and clamped to dry. After the fitting it is possible that a further tiny piece will be sawn away from the formed panels so that the dimensioning and squares of all the panels are identical. Obviously, that makes the fitting a lot easier for the floor fitter.

Floor Forum International 64

Sizes An important point of these panels is the fact that, strictly speaking, nothing is sawn on site. After all, each panel forms a whole pattern from which you can hardly do without a piece. Amongst other things, this has the consequence that most pattern floors have to be tailor-made because the dimensions of the room determine the size of the panels. Highly common standard sizes are 600 x 600mm, 700 x 700mm, 800 x 800mm, and 1,000 x 1,000mm. The latter is also the size of the original Versailles panels in the castle with the same name. As regards thicknesses, there are also various possibilities (partly linked to the size): 8, 8.5, 15, 18.5, and 20mm. Another important point is also that panel floors are available both in solid wood and multi-layer.

VERSAILLES IS COMING BACK TO LIFE

Designs In most case the panels are made on the basis of old (traditional) fitting patterns, but, strictly speaking, this is not an essential feature of a pattern floor. It goes without saying that people associate these floors with a classic interior. A logical consequence is that panel floors are often made from old (recuperated) wood or that they are given the appearance of an old floor via one of the well known distressing methods (e.g. brushing or beating). The combination of the used look of the wood and the fitting pattern gives even more the impression that this is a genuine antique floor. Nevertheless, we have heard from some manufacturers/traders that panel floors tend rather to cut across the general trend for ‘distressed’ floors. For some people, the growth of the segment lies in the demand for old patterns for a modern interior. Then, you don’t get a rustic (often dark) finish, but more light designs.

Wood sorts Anyone who is a stickler for historical accuracy in naming their parquet floor is recommended to choose oak for Versailles panels. The only reason why oak plays the main part here arises from the simple conclusion that 90% of all wooden floors (in Europe) are designed in oak. However, all other sorts of wood (or combinations of wood sorts) are just as feasible for making panels. One of the many popular alternatives is European walnut. We also often come across cherry. With one of the traders (see below) we see panel floors which are designed in recuperated teak. These floors give a distressed look in any case. Fitting As we have already said, the panels are not sawn on site. This means that the biggest task prior to the fitting will be to measure the room extremely precisely. The best way to fit Versailles panels is full glueing onto a perfectly flat sanded mosaic subfloor. Firstly, you measure out and mark off the lines of the borders so that you can measure where the middle panel needs to be fitted. The other panels are glued to each other and nailed into the frieze edgings and a few central blocks. A constantly elastic adhesive is strongly recommended for the glueing. As regards the finish, obviously, the client can choose between the classic finishes such as varnish, oil, or hard wax, but it goes without saying that oil or wax is used for the finish of distressed floors. Fitting patterns Strictly speaking, all classical fitting patterns are possible for making panels. The Chantilly pattern, for example, is less well known than the Versailles pattern, but is also present in the renowned castle of Louis XIV. Chantilly is a somewhat intricate variant, which consists of several small panels which also form a woven structure. Furthermore, the great classics Hungarian point and herringbone, which are normally fitted full, can also be included as a pattern of a panel floor. With Hungarian point the strips are fitted facing each other at an angle of 30 to 45°. Sandpapering creates a subtle difference in colour to provide a three-dimensional effect. With the herringbone pattern the strips are applied in herringbone with the top sides directly opposite each other to create a zigzag pattern.

Ardesia Ardesia believes there is no hint of a trend. They commented: “Versailles panels have never been out of fashion. It is a classic floor solution which suits both classic and modern interior styles. A good 90 to 95% of their panel floors are designed in oak, plus a minority in European walnut and a number of other wood sorts. Distressed designs are extremely popular e.g. hand-scraped or brushed. The sizes 600 x 600mm and 1,000 x 1,000mm are standard, but they have noticed a growing demand for a size between both, especially 800 x 800mm. BJ Parket Panels have never been out of fashion at BJ Parket. There has always been a demand for them in the 24 years of BJ Parket’s existence. The quantity of panels increases year by year and this tendency shows no signs of abating. Versailles panels are produced almost exclusively from oak wood, but Versailles in teak, afrormosia, wenge , merbau, and a few other wood sorts have passed the review. The trend is certainly for a distressed design, something which gives Versailles panels another extra dimension. BJ Parket offers its clients standard and tailor-made Versailles panels (fixed prices in our price list). The sizes are often decided on the basis of a diagram of the room. The only thing which really is standard is the width of the frieze. Small Versailles panels from 49.5 to 73cm are made with friezes of 5.5cm. Large Versailles panels from 73 to 94cm are made with friezes of 7.2cm and the Versailles XL is made with friezes of 9cm. In theory, the XL is offered in only one width, namely +/- 102cm, but even here they do sometimes make an exception. The XL is also always offered as standard with a continuous strips. This means that the outer frieze is adapted in the width so that the wicker in the panels runs nicely in line with the adjoining panels. This is an option with the Small Versailles and the Large Versailles. BJ Parket supplies its panels as tiles. These tiles can be laid in the adhesive in this way. BJ Parket even supplies halves and quarters so that it is not necessary to saw any whole panels. And so, you don’t need much experience to fit these panels. Obviously, the finish is a different kettle of fish, as that does require experience and expertise.

Design Parquet believes that these floors belong in castles and large houses and mansions, but also in new homes which strive for a modern design. The most popular sort of wood is oak, but other wood sorts such as wenge and merbau are possible. The oak can also be coloured in various shades in line with current trends. The panels are offered in both distressed and non-distressed designs. Design Parquet offers panels of 1,000 x 1,000mm as standard, but customised work is possible e.g. 600 x 600mm or 800 x 800mm. The panels are nailed onto a frame or glued onto a screed. FB Hout FB Hout has specialised for years in the production of pattern floors and now has everything in its extensive stock at its new parquet factory in Germany. All panels can be supplied in two-layer FB+ and solid wood. Apart from Versailles panels, FB Hout also offers Chantelle, Etoille, and Castle, for instance. As in all wooden floor products, oak is calling the shots. However, obviously, if there is a request for other sorts of wood, this is no problem at FB Hout, which manages the entire production process and supplies fully customised work. FB Hout has noticed mainly a demand for special designs, including modern interiors. Versailles panels at FB Hout are generally produced in sizes of 800 x 800mm. However, due to special requests from clients, customised work has become standard and sizes are decided in consultation with the client.

Holz Bois The Versailles pattern is still in fashion at Holz Bois, but it has only a limited use. This pattern is the most attractive when it is fitted diagonally and it does need a large surface to come fully into its own. An alternative is the braided pattern which runs continuously without a board. In some respects it is the inside of the Versailles pattern and is also possible in smaller rooms. The main sort of wood is French oak in extra and premier. American walnut is also used in exceptional cases. Distressed floors are possible, but then mainly in the oak bis/rustic selection. Standard sizes at Holz Bois are 810 x 810mm and 1030 x 1030mm, but customised work is also possible. Mister Parquet VERSAILLES vecchio. The upright panels with Versailles design have a 22 mm thickness and a dimension of 1000x1000 mm. Every necessary element to put together the full design is assemblad with wooden pins. Finishes are normally only with wax or oil, possibly on request also dyed. Floor laying.

Versailles The real original Versailles pattern is diagonal wicker. The castle panels are exactly 1m² (100 x 100cm). They are separated by three strips (8cm), which converge at an angle to form a point. Versailles panels are now available in many sizes and adapted to the size of the room for fitting. A pleasantry (oddity) of Versailles panels is that they are fitted in the shape of a rhombus. This means that each row edge needs a half-panel fitted diagonally. And so, traders in Versailles floors supply those halfpanels so that no sawing is required there either.

Mardegan Legno

TRADITIONAL PARQUET MANUFACTURER Style panels, end grain, distressed floors (different ageing techniques ‘sanded, brushed, tumbled, smoked and structured’): Customised work on simple request!

At Mardegan Legno they have noticed a renewed demand for Versailles panels in recent years, even though these floors are still regarded as a niche product for a limited and extremely select public. Most floors are designed in oak in several possible finishes in the collections: London my life, Live in New York, Milan Style, Florence Style, Antichi sapori, Emotions & colours, and Harmony & nature. Versailles panels at Mardegan Legno are also produced in European walnuts and cherry. The panels are 15 or 20mm thick and have sizes of 600 x 600mm or 1,000 x 1,000mm. Here, too, customised work is possible according to the client’s wishes. Timberline For Timberline the Versailles panel has always been one of the most popular cassettes. The main types are 20mm solid wood and 20mm multi-layer. At Timberline these Versailles floors are available in both distressed and non-distressed versions. The standard size of the panels is 810 x 810mm, but here, too, customised work is perfectly possible. Versailleparket At Versailleparket they are witnessing a growing demand for pattern floors. Here, too, oak is the most popular sort of wood for the Versailles design, but walnut is also in demand. In contrast to what happens with other traders, most of these floors are sold in a distressed design, with no fewer than 90% being distressed. Even though fixed measures are possible, at Versailleparket 95% of the pattern floors are entirely tailor-made. Yepp

Panel floors are in demand only sporadically at Yepp, and if an order does come in, in most cases it is for the classical Versailles pattern, but sometimes also Castle or Chantilly. Oak is the most popular sort of wood. Distressed designs are always possible at the client’s request. Obviously, as regards size, customised work is possible. The standard sizes are 570 x 570mm, 660 x 660mm, or 810 x 810mm. Fitting these panels does require some experience, so it really is a job for the professional.

… YET IT REMAINS A PROFITABLE MARKET.

As a parquet producing country, Belgium hovers around at the bottom of the list of FEP countries. As regards parquet consumption, the Belgians do a lot better. Belgium is a land of surprisingly many contradictions. Ever since its foundation in 1830, the country has been needled by the huge differences between the north and the south of the country; indeed, the differences between Wallonia (French-speaking south) and Flanders (Dutchspeaking north) run much deeper than just a linguistic distinction. As regards mentality, economics, and in terms of culture, there is a love-hate relationship which has persisted for over 180 years.

Belgian economy Like most countries, Belgium has suffered at the hands of the economic and financial crisis of recent years. Since 2010, according to various publications and analyses, most wounds seem to have healed. First signs of growth 2010 was a good financial year. According to the annual report of the National Bank, Belgium’s score in several spheres was amongst the best in Europe. However, Guy Quaden, governor of the National Bank, did warn against complacency. He commented at the time: “In today’s world it’s no longer enough to strive for the European average. Belgium also needs to take action to counter inflation, reduce government deficit, and improve its competitiveness.” The Belgian economy grew in 2010 by 2%, better than the European average of 1.7%. Belgian families once again spent more (+1.4%) after an exceptionally poor 2009 in which consumption had fallen. At that time, people were still worried about their jobs and their own capital and, as a result, savings rose to record levels. In 2010, savings fell to 17.2%, the available income stagnated, and Belgians began to spend more. Export (+10%) was also an important motor for economic growth that year. It was only investments which fell (-1.8%). What about 2013? The federal research institute ‘Planbureau’ has adjusted growth forecasts slightly upwards for the Belgian economy in 2013. It no longer expects zero growth, but an increase of 0.1%. The prognosis for 2014 is still rooted in a growth forecast for gross domestic product (GDP) of 1.1%. The revised growth forecast for 2013 is good news for the current budget. The Planbureau expects growth

in exports for the whole of 2013 of 0.2%, which picks up to 3.6% in 2014. The increase in consumer confidence in the second quarter of the year also means that a further rise in the tendency to save is highly unlikely. This benefits private consumption with an expected growth of 0.4 and 0.8% in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Investments in homes is expected to fall by 4.4% this year, but in 2014 this figure will be limited to 0.4%. Companies are likely to invest 1.1% less this year, but for 2014 1.8% more is predicted. In 2013, there is likely to be a net loss of 8,000 jobs, but almost 19,000 new jobs will be created in 2014. Forestry in Belgium Belgian forests cover about 692,916 hectares, of which 544,800 lie in the Walloon Region, 146,381 are located in the Flemish Region, and 1,735 in the Brussels Capital Region. 22.7% of Belgian territory is occupied by forest. The province of Luxembourg heads the list with a forest area of over half its surface area. Belgium as a parquet country We have assessed both consumption and production of parquet over the past two years (2011 and 2012) at both Belgian and European level. Production In 2011, the FEP countries together produced 70.713.000m² of parquet, a rise as compared to the previous year. Belgium, the smallest parquet country in Europe, accounted for 0,61% of that. And so, during that year, Belgium produced 431.349m² of parquet. European production (FEP) fell by 4,7% in 2012 to 68.266.133m². However, the Belgian share rose to 0,66%, a figure which represented an increase in the number of square metres produced to 450.556m² in 2012. Belgium remains the smallest producer, followed by Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Hungary. Consumption In 2011, the FEP countries together consumed 91.475.000m² of wooden floors. Belgium accounted for 3,59% of that, thereby consuming more than Rumania, Hungary, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. In 2012, consumption in FEP countries fell by no less than 5,88% to run aground on 87.509.000m². Here, too, Belgium’s share of total consumption rose to 3,63%, but actual consumption dropped from 3.328.952m² to 3.176.576m².

VANLANDSCHOOT HOUT

From left to right the brothers Vanlandschoot Tom & Kurt

UNILIN was formed in 1960 by various families from the south of West Flanders who were working in the flax industry. They started by producing flax chipboards. From the 1970s, UNILIN also started using wood as a raw material, and that led to the production of wood chipboards and, later on, laminate. UNILIN (Unilin, division flooring) was the First company to launch a laminate brand on the Belgian market, namely Quick-Step. In 1997, the Uniclic system was invented, the first glueless, integrated click system, which, in the meantime, has been patented worldwide and is used by scores of players. In 2005, UNILIN was taken over by flooring giant Mohawk industries inc. Since then, Quick-Step has passed from one innovation to another, including the introduction of new floor categories, namely Multi-layer parquet in 2009 and, recently this year, Livyn vinyl floors. 2013 also goes down as the year in which Pergo has been included in the UNILIN range of brands. UNILIN’s core business, division flooring, is the production of laminate, multi-layer parquet, and vinyl. UNILIN employs about 4000 people all over the world. For 2014, UNILIN is announcing some new collections together with new technology for laminate, parquet, and vinyl. www.quick-step.be - + 32 (0) 56675211

Special Top Belgian companies focused on export

LALEGNO

The Belgian company Z-Parket was formed in 2004 and its history ever since has been characterised by the natural. This applies to both the company’s product development and organisations as well as its social character. These original values make Z-Parket a pioneer in the sphere of trends, but always with a feel for timeless interiors. The company’s growth is based on innovation and creativity. However, the Z-Parket operation extends beyond that. The company’s values are reflected in its love for natural beauty, especially wood. This is precisely why Z-Parket doesn’t colour its wood with pigmented surface treatments, but instead treats it meticulously, insistently, and patiently to create a reaction in the wood. This is done in a way which allows the wood to give free rein to its natural character. Z-Parket applies its values to its clients naturally, not only in a sustainable enterprise in which care for natural beauty is always prominent, but also by offering a wide diversity. This applies to colours, sizes, finish, sort, and distressing: customise your feeling. The result is an interior which has developed organically into a personal story, which turns any house into a home. www.z-parket.be - + 32 (0) 89380863
