LED CURING IS NOW THE MOST NATURAL THING IN THE WORLD

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SERVE TO AID THE PROGRESS

In the past we reported on UV technology as if we had seen a UFO, but the principle of UV drying has now established itself fully in fields such as the parquet industry. UV finishes for wooden floors have the pleasant novelty of drying almost instantly. Using UV technology is not only attractive for parquet manufacturers and coating contractors for that faster drying, but also it yields a better quality finish, something which benefits the project manager, floor fitter, and end client. The switch from halogen lamps to LED lamps makes the process even more attractive.

LED lamps are taking over LED lamps are also UV lamps, because they emit light which falls within the UV spectrum (mainly UV A). The light is emitted via Light-Emitting Diodes instead of via a fluorescent lamp. The light which LED lamps radiate has a smaller spread of UV light than UV lamps which use a compact fluorescence lamp. LED lamps do radiate a higher concentration of UV light and more energy. In any case, it is clear that those who already use UV curing will make the switch to LED in the near or somewhat longer term future and there are various reasons for that.

Energy-saving The basic difference with UV drying is the huge energy saving. Those who dry using LED light save up to 60% immediately on energy consumption. Yet that’s only the start! Unlike UV lamps, LED lamps don’t need to warm up, so production can start at once. Moreover, LED lamps do not radiate infrared light which is converted into heat. And so, the wood no longer warms up, so that roughening up and problems with glueing are kept to a minimum. The minimal development of heat reduces the risk of fire (due to a delay in the production process, for instance) to virtually nil.

Constant quality Apart from all these practical benefits, the use of LED lights instead of UV lights also offers a huge quality benefit. We refer here to the constant quality of the LED. Whereas a UV lamp diminishes in quality over time, the light of a LED lamp retains the highest quality throughout its lifespan. Never again will you have problems with a covering layer which is not completely dry.

Ecological The environment benefits fully from LED light drying. For instance, the lamps do not contain any mercury or calcium, but certainly just as important is that LED lamps transmit energy solely in the UVA range. This means that no ozone is emitted. And so, expensive extractor systems are a thing of the past. Moreover, LED lamps have a very long lifespan of over 10,000 hours of use, unlike UV lamps which have a lifespan of only 800 to 1000 hours of effective use. An overview

Blanchon

LED curing has been in existence for about ten years and was used originally in the packaging of cosmetics and in graphic applications. The big advantage of LED drying over classic UV lamps is the energy saving. Blanchon is of the opinion that a lot of lamps are too ‘weak’ to be used on finishes for parquet without compromising on quality. Blanchon offers various oils and lacquers which can be cured with LED in the factory where LED can gradually be used. However, at Blanchon they are not yet convinced about applications on site.

Chimiver LED systems are the future for the curing process of coatings. Chimiver, always moving with the time, offers you LED OIL, an efficient and performing product which embraces this technology. PRODUCT: - It cures instantly under LED light and wood can be walked on immediately - Very high chemical and wear resistances - Solvent free, no ozone emissions, no unpleasant odour - 0% VOC - Natural look and feel - Available transparent and colored - Easy maintenance with Lios range of products

LED-CURING UNIT: - Longer service life: LED lights last up to 20000 hours whereas UV lights up to 700/1000 - Energy saving - Low working temperature

Ciranova

The use of LED technology is relatively new for the wooden INDUSTRIAL FINISHES

flooring industry, so there’s UV LED OIL still a lot of unknown territory to explore. The system has lots of positive features and Ciranova - Debal Coatings is continuing to investigate the correct applications, drying techniques, and product development. The company has expanded its know-how of LED products and application this year thanks to the takeover of the company Geka Coatings from Deinze (B). Geka Coatings (B) already has several years of experience in LED and UV technology in various sectors. They are using this know-how for research in order to obtain top quality LED drying products for the parquet sector. We are familiar with Light Emitting Diode or LED from daily life. A UV LED generates UV energy in the form of photons. The interaction of these photons with the photo-initiator creates a chain reaction between binding agents (monomers and oligomers) and the fluid is converted into a solid substance. Knowing that short wavelengths are good for surface drying and that longer wavelengths have less energy, but penetrate deeper into the coating, we can say that UV LED performs well for drying in depth and that the classic UV technology (halogen lamps in particular) yields better surface drying. At Ciranova, too, they have great faith that LED will be the technology of the future. Since both the product and drying are still developing rapidly, Ciranova prefers to concentrate on industrial finishes.

DecoRad® UV Curing Equipment For 395nm LED curing as industrial process we offer our retrofit model LC40 to be placed on your existing oil-line. This is our entry level LED cure equipment with the best possible balance in price and quality. Next is our fully automatic Linemate with integrated conveyor and smart cure control systems to be placed behind your existing oil-line.

On-Site LED curing In the same high quality we offer mobile equipment for on-site LED curing, such as our Floormate LED and Handmate LED. We develop and produce these products in our new factory in the Netherlands under ISO 9001 quality assurance. The LED chip/modules used originate from a cooperation with IST Metz GmbH. Mobile LED equipment units sold on the European market are not what we have hoped for. We do experience more attention for DecoRad mobile LED equipment as contractors more and more back down from cheap Chinese import units with big issues and no support. Pallmann

LED curing is no new topic on the market. It occupies our industry since several years. It is used especially in the pre-finished parquet flooring industry. The technology is very similar to UV curing. It is just a different way of UV-curing. In difference to UV-curing the process of LED curing is very cooling-intensive and demands a high amount of energy. The quality of an LED cured lacquer or oil is comparable to UV-cured products - the process is different, the result should be comparable. It can be used for industrial processes as well as for on site renovation. As energy consumption is very high and the cooling process is a challenge, Pallmann actually does not provide any product for this use and does not offer any machinery for this use. As the two processes are very similar, the German company fully concentrates on its very successful on site UV-system.
