Curing oil/lacquer using LED
LED CURING IS NOW THE MOST NATURAL THING IN THE WORLD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SERVE TO AID THE PROGRESS In the past we reported on UV technology as if we had seen a UFO, but the principle of UV drying has now established itself fully in fields such as the parquet industry. UV finishes for wooden floors have the pleasant novelty of drying almost instantly. Using UV technology is not only attractive for parquet manufacturers and coating contractors for that faster drying, but also it yields a better quality finish, something which benefits the project manager, floor fitter, and end client. The switch from halogen lamps to LED lamps makes the process even more attractive.
LED lamps are taking over LED lamps are also UV lamps, because they emit light which falls within the UV spectrum (mainly UV A). The light is emitted via Light-Emitting Diodes instead of via a fluorescent lamp. The light which LED lamps radiate has a smaller spread of UV light than UV lamps which use a compact fluorescence lamp. LED lamps do radiate a higher concentration of UV light and more energy. In any case, it is clear that those who already use UV curing will make the switch to LED in the near or somewhat longer term future and there are various reasons for that.
Energy-saving The basic difference with UV drying is the huge energy saving. Those who dry using LED light save up to 60% immediately on energy consumption. Yet that’s only the start! Unlike UV lamps, LED lamps don’t need to warm up, so production can start at once. Moreover, LED lamps do not radiate infrared light which is converted into heat. And so, the wood no longer warms up, so that roughening up and problems with glueing are kept to a minimum. The minimal development of heat reduces the risk of fire (due to a delay in the production process, for instance) to virtually nil.
Constant quality Apart from all these practical benefits, the use of LED lights instead of UV lights also offers a huge quality benefit. We refer here to the constant quality of the LED. Whereas a UV lamp diminishes in quality over time, the light of a LED lamp retains the highest quality throughout its lifespan. Never again will you have problems with a covering layer which is not completely dry.
Ecological The environment benefits fully from LED light drying. For instance, the lamps do not contain any mercury or calcium, but certainly just as important is that LED lamps transmit energy solely in the UVA range. This means that no ozone is emitted. And so, expensive extractor systems are a thing of the past. Moreover, LED lamps have a very long lifespan of over 10,000 hours of use, unlike UV lamps which have a lifespan of only 800 to 1000 hours of effective use.

An overview Blanchon LED curing has been in existence for about ten years and was used originally in the packaging of cosmetics and in graphic applications. The big advantage of LED drying over classic UV lamps is the energy saving. Blanchon is of the opinion that a lot of lamps are too ‘weak’ to be used on finishes for parquet without compromising on quality. Blanchon offers various oils and lacquers which can be cured with LED in the factory where LED can gradually be used. However, at Blanchon they are not yet convinced about applications on site.
