Anna-Marie Pampellonne General Manager Forestry Timber

While some trends are fleeting, custom floors will never go out of style. Forestry Timber’s handcrafted Fashion collection is classic, refined, beautiful, and always stunning.

Our craftsmanship is second-to-none, using both age-old techniques and cutting-edge technologies to create a distinctive floor for homes or commercial properties. Planks have smooth, hand-scraped or hand brushed surfaces and are smoked, fumed, semi-fumed and finished with UV oils – every floor is unique. Forestry Timber has one of the widest range of colours in the industry and is a world leader; utilising reactive stain technology with species such as Western European Oak, Ash, Pecan & Tasmanian Oak. Fashion Floors look elevate your décor using either Herringbone or Chevron, a classic 1930s Casino floor and even bowties reminiscent of European castles from centuries gone by. With Herringbone and Chevron all our planks are hand crafted to match as pairs, resulting in a seamless design. Forestry Timber has taken our Fashion Floors one step further with our innovative Chevron Connex which was designed for easy, no-fuss installation. Chevron planks installed on 1450mm x 240mm planks come as pairs, making it the quickest Chevron installation – giving more people more options. Our Heritage Castle floors consist of pre-fabricated patterned floors with multi-width planks joined by randomly placed small bowties that replicate pegs used to join old floorboards. The bowties take already stunning floors to an entirely new level of style and sophistication. More so, our floors are designed to last for years, aging more beautifully every year. Interior designers are being given more freedom by their clients to play with pattern and colour-contrasting floors, creating a modern twist on a classic design. More and more often we have requests for dynamic width floors ranging from 145mm up to 400mm – allowing clients to create picturesque, one-of-a-kind floors. Planks of contrasting widths are current, stylish and exude a sense of luxury and sophistication that is unsurpassed, creating floors that are works of art unto themselves.

factories and the modern multistorey office building with its prestigious showroom was already made on 23.11.2020. Originally, the start of construction was not envisaged until spring 2021. By why wait so long? So this successful company is making use of the opportunity this year with extensive investment in the construction measures at the Zell am Moos site. After a successful 2019 with turnover of 65.8 million Euros and growth of 10% compared with the prior year, FN Neuhofer is continuing its two-figure growth rate in this challenging year too. This is made possible by, among other things, an additional new major client and strong growth with existing clients. The construction of two new “hangars” will create additional production space of 8,800 m². The 3-storey office building will have an area of 2,750 m² and an integrated modern canteen of 380 m². A 685 m² prestigious showroom will permit, among other things, the display of entire rack structures as seen in DIY stores and therefore offer a real experience for clients and partners. An area for presenting the impressive 370-year history of the firm and family is also planned. In addition, social and technical services areas will be provided. A new solid wood hall with 1.050 m² is also planned. The total area of this construction project is 14.550 m². The following investments are still to be made this year: - New aluminium and plastic packing line (Industry 4.0 robot packing permitting faster production, automatic quality scan) - New painting plant (Lower paint consumption because of spray application; RAL and NCS colours may be used) - New shrink tunnel (Can process all sustainable films (from maize starch etc.); can use thinner films than before) In recent years, a double-digit million Euro amount has been invested in the latest planing and sheathing technology , packaging robots, interlinked plant, digital printing technology and warehouses at the site. Sustainability is of course always borne in mind. For example, some of our electricity is provided by the company’s own hydroelectric power plants and is to be supplemented by solar panels.

Producers of ecological adhesives

GREEN HAS NUMEROUS SHADES WHO PRODUCES GENUINE ECOLOGICALLY RESPONSIBLE ADHESIVE AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Photo – Pallmann

Fitting wooden and lighter floors is subject to increasing demands, including in the area of health. The type of adhesive used plays a major part in that respect, so in this article we consider how the market is reacting to the types of adhesive on offer. How green and ecologically responsible are the products on offer and which products are the most suitable and when and where?

10

technical information on the compatibility between possible adhesive families and various wooden floors and substrates.

Four major groups

One of the hardest things is choosing a suitable parquet adhesive. Parquet floor fitters sometimes have to try quite literally to see the wood from the many trees which obstruct the view. Obviously, professionals will seek advice from the many producers, but we do also advise them to consult the necessary technical reference documents. These include the revised technical sheet TV 218 'Wooden flooring: plank floors, parquet, and veneer floors’ by the BBRI. These documents give you precise technical information about product families and fitting techniques with no commercial bias.

When we talk specifically about adhesives, we can say, broadly speaking, that there are four major distinct groups based on their chemical composition: dispersion adhesives (white adhesives), monocomponent polyurethane adhesives (PU 1K), dual-component polyurethane adhesives (PU 2K), and, finally, polymer and hybrid adhesives (SPUR, STP, MS polymers, etc.). You need to remember that this chart also indicates the compatibility or incompatibility by means of a colour code. For instance, green means that the adhesive is compatible with the substrate and wooden flooring in question. Orange means that this choice of adhesive is possible as long as you observe certain conditions (e.g. substrate preparation, primer, etc.) in consultation with the adhesive and parquet producer. Finally, red means that the adhesive is not compatible with the substrate and wooden flooring in question.

Choosing suitable parquet adhesive

TV 218 rules

The wide range of products means it is not always easy to choose the right type of adhesive for a given work site. A useful aid to that end is a chart issued by the BBRI, which has been drawn up in co-operation with parquet fitters and adhesive makers. The chart gives clear

We must also point out that merely consulting the chart will not suffice. You must also observe the rules of the technical sheet TV 218 at all times. Indeed, apart from the choice of adhesive, other factors could have a considerable effect on the behaviour of the wooden floor

Floor Forum International 113

in the course of time. Here we are referring to factors like the operation of a floor heating system, respect for the moisture level substrate requirements, and such like. To find the most suitable adhesive, depending on the features of the building site in question, you should therefore choose the adhesive family first on the basis of the wooden flooring substrate. Then, as a professional, you also take account of adhesive performances and properties (e.g. handling, open time, etc.), which are given by the producer.

What’s on the market ? Blanchon Our polymer hybrid adhesives contain no solvents or isocyanates and respect both public health and the environment. Strictly speaking, without those conditions they could not be deemed as ecological. The Blanchon range includes two adhesives which are spread using a spatula and one adhesive in a cordon. They are all in class A+ for the quality of the indoor air. The three adhesives AB 1300, AB 2000, and Cordon are designed for use by specialist floor fitters. AB 1300 is a hybrid polymer adhesive which is ideal for the full glueing of wide solid parquet (up to 130mm) and composite up to 260mm. AB 2000 is also a hybrid polymer adhesive for the full glueing of wide solid parquet (up to 200mm) and composite up to 400mm. AB 2000 is also suitable for floor heating. AB 2000 and AB 1300 are both EC1R (GEV-EMICODE) certified. The cordon adhesive is a hybrid polymer adhesive, which is supplied in aluminium sausageshape packs and which is spread using a special pistol. It is ideal for vertical elements (such as skirting boards) and is also used a lot for all possible cordon fittings on the floor.

UNISIL can contribute to the achievement of QI CREDIT 4.1 according to the parameters of the GEV dated 03 March 2009, because it meets the certification LEED protocol (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

ADESIVER ELASTIC is a singlecomponent hydro-curing prepolymer based adhesive with a silanic termination (MS technology). Recommended for gluing of pre-finished wooden floor onto marble, grit, ceramic or marblechip floor tiles, etc. Also suitable for gluing wooden floor onto underfloor heating and cooling system. ADESIVER ELASTIC can contribute to the achievement of QI CREDIT 4.1 according to the parameters of the GEV dated 03 March 2009, because it meets the certification LEED protocol (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

Pallmann Pallmann P6 is a hard 1-component wood flooring adhesive with high shear resistance in accordance with DIN 14 293. It combines the strength of common 2-component wood flooring adhesives with the ease of handling of 1-component products. The solvent- and water-free adhesive is very friendly to processing, well spreadable, with excellent rigde formation and high suction liability. Pallmann P6 persuades a high filling capacity, a hard ridge formation and a high shear resistance and can be used for all common types of wood flooring. The adhesive is solvent-free and certified with the Blue Angel (DE-UZ 113 /environmentally friendly because of low emissions). It is also labelled with the EMICODE EC 1 PLUS / very low emission.

Soudal Nowadays, 1-component hybrid adhesives are a familiar segment in the market. They contain no water, solvents, or isocyanates, so they can be used without any extra precautions. Moreover, spilt adhesive can easily be removed without damaging the base. The combination of a high strength and ongoing elasticity means they can be deployed very widely, often even without treating the subfloor first. Thanks to their high elasticity, they give the wood more space to swell and shrink, but without compromising on efficiency. Soudal hybrid parquet adhesives comply with the EU standard for elastic parquet adhesives, have an EC1+ grade, and stand out for performances and convenience. Furthermore, they are easy to spread, the adhesive grooves show excellent form stability, and they set quickly, things which are all important for a perfectly finished wooden floor. Moreover, all hybrid parquet adhesives from Soudal are used in combination with floor heating and cooling.

Levelling agents

FLATNESS STARTS WITH THE BASE LEVELLERS ENSURE STRONG AND FLEXIBLE FLOORS WITH NO BURSTS OR CRACKS we always advise you to include the application of a levelling agent in a comprehensive price proposal. After all, it is typical of this sort of work that cheap often does not mean cheaper. There is a good chance that some adjustments will be necessary later because various conditions have been ignored. In other words, take full advantage of your expertise.

Why fit? In the introduction we said that levelling agents were used mainly to make floors as flat as possible, but don’t forget that this product is more than just that. For instance, levelling agents provide perfect protection for the floor finish. Generally speaking, you can say that levelling agents come into their own most fully with very thin top floors such as marmoleum vinyl because the slightest unevenness shows clearly through such materials. Once you’ve decided to use a levelling agent, it is good to consider that you don’t want to cause your clients any unnecessary expense. Levelling agents are not cheap, yet there is a skill to determine the perfect minimal thickness. In this case remember that levelling agent floors are usually calculated in thicknesses of millimetres, not centimetres. Photo – Pallmann

If you want to fit a floor, even a young child knows you should make it as perfectly flat as possible and that flatness starts with the base. And so, a good solution is to use a levelling agent which makes the floor self-levelling thanks to the use mainly of synthetic resin and cement. This levelling agent creates a very strong and flexible floor which greatly reduces the risk of cracks and/or bursts.

Another warning: Not all substrates are suitable for the use of levelling agents. Basically, they can be applied to any substrate whatsoever, provided that the substrate is stable enough and watertight, but that’s not all. As we’ve already pointed out, remember, for instance, with wooden floors that gaps and joints have to be covered meticulously.

Two specialists Chimiver

It will come as no surprise to learn that levelling agents are used mainly to level out existing substrates such as tiles or concrete. Wooden floors can also be treated for this purpose, but you must ensure that the floorboards are secure and that there are no joints between the various planks. Furthermore, you need to fill the gaps carefully at the joint with the wall. After that, you can enjoy the two main assets of a levelling agent, namely its capacity to fill gaps and a certain elasticity. In this article we find out who has what on the market, what levellers can be used for, and what their lifespan is. It’s also worth knowing that some products are better suited to one type of subfloor than another one. For instance, there are levellers which stand out if they are used in combination with concrete floors, whilst others prove themselves top class with wooden substrates. Clients dare to take the application of levelling agents out of the hands of professionals because it seems an easy job. In that case

RIGO Verffabriek

www.lithos.it

RIGO Verffabriek investigated the demand for a suitable finish for self-levelling concrete floors with an industrial look. In addition to a seamless appearance and a high degree of water resistance, a finish should also retain the matte look of the self-levelling concrete layer. The masters of lacquer crafting at RIGO Verffabriek looked for and found a way to retain the untreated appearance of finished surfaces over 15 years ago: SKYLT. SKYLT protects the treated surface and strengthens its original appearance. With a SKYLT finish, wood keeps

its pure, wooden appearance. Thanks to the introduction of SKYLT Sealer, this untreated look can now also be applied to mineral surfaces. SKYLT Sealer #5030 is a functional primer that negates the hydrophilic qualities of the mineral surface through a thick, high-build coating that initially discolours the surface. With a second coat of SKYLT Sealer, the protective layer is practically waterproof. Once sealed, the surface can be finished seamlessly and without any issues with two coats of SKYLT Original, resulting in the desired, untreated appearance. The discolouration will disappear without a trace. SKYLT Sealer is also highly suitable as a finish for walls. SKYLT Sealer has been available at wholesalers since 19 October 2020.

Subfloors: part 3

GOOD PREPARATION IS OVER HALF THE WORK SUBFLOOR IN CONCRETE AND A SAND-CEMENT COVERING FLOOR There are special requirements for subfloors when fitting parquet. Professionals are well aware of that. Certainly when it comes to fitting solid parquet or parquet with a special pattern such as herringbone or Hungarian point, it is essential that anything out of sight (i.e. including a subfloor) is of the right quality. If you don’t pay enough attention to that, you could get problems later. In this article we consider specifically how to tackle various things when confronted with ‘stony’ subfloors, in particular concrete and the highly fashionable sand-cement.

Concrete If you opt for a concrete floor, first of all you have to decide how to apply it to the sand (or check how it already is applied). And so, this means that a damp screen has to be fitted onto the sand first of all and that you fit a damp screen to the walls with an upright edge. It is important to apply a layer of foam on top with upright edges. Indeed, the idea is that both layers protect the floor from rising damp and from damp which can come onto the floor via the walls.

properly. Furthermore, don’t forget that the thickness of a sandcement covering floor at ground level is no more than 50 to 65mm and 50mm for floors upstairs. Some things are due to the fact that various pipes have to be fitted into the floor and sound insulation requirements are becoming increasingly strict.

One specialist Design Parquet You choice your underlayers according to the use. There are 3 objectives : to sound insulation, to reduce the resonance noise or to create a barrier against moisture backing. Design Parquet offers different underlayers according to your needs. The most popular Design Parquet underlayers for their convenience are : - L’iso dB, patented system, is a ecological system (without CO2 emanation), providing both fixing the parquet floor with sound insulation (18dB). This underlays allows fast implementation thanks to 2 adhesives faces. Glue isn’t necessary.

You then apply the layer of concrete to the layer of foam, with a sand-cement covering floor. You can see the upright edge of foam and the upright edges of the damp screen from inside out (even after the sand-cement covering floor is applied). If your floor doesn’t have a damp screen or layer of foam, you don’t fit solid parquet. You can fit industrial parquet because you can fit a damp screen yourself.

Sand-cement covering floors You have two options with a sand-cement covering floor on a concrete structure. This concrete structure is either solid or it contains channels. If it is a solid structure, it comprises pre-stressed concrete beams. This solid structure is used the most in modern new buildings. With the other structure you are confronted with floorboards with channels, something used mostly for upstairs floors. The sandcement covering floor lies on the top, but you have to take care during the construction process. You must ensure that no rain water seeps through the openings at the sides of the open boards. If damp gets into the channels, there will be a risk of damp problems later. You can easily check for damp problems from the ceiling. If you notice any streaks there, that is a clear warning sign. Moreover, although this might be much less of a problem with solid concrete floors, it is still best to take care here. With a sand-cement covering floor on a solid concrete floor, you often find nowadays the covering floor applied directly to concrete, with a damp screen and sound insulation board on the concrete. Remember here that the concrete must have the necessary time to dry out

- L’iso alu, meanwhile, is a waterproofing underlayer, a real barrier against moisture. We warranty until 10% of humidity in the support. It’s easy to install with the adhesive face. The wood floor is glued on this underlayer with NAVYCOL PS glue.

Special Ceramic tiles with the look of wood

CERAMIC TILES WITH THE LOOK OF WOOD SHEER LOGIC HERE, TOO, THE CHOICE OF WOOD IS ALMOST INFINITE Wood is one of the oldest commodities for building use. The fact that wood is quite easy to process has certainly helped its success. Then, there’s the variety. In contrast to bygone days when it was mainly oak or nothing, we can now access countless sorts of wood, which can then be rounded off with a whole range of colours and finishes. Worth imitating? Absolutely! All types of floors have done it for years. Tile floor producers are following suit and doing it with success!

Large-scale imitation Let’s be clear about this. When we say ‘all’ floor producers imitate wooden floors, we really do mean ‘all producers’. We mention laminate first, but we can now also include PVC, LVT, and linoleum.

Laminate first From day one, laminate emerged from a quest for an affordable alternative to costly wooden floors which retained the look of wood. It was an imitation product, that’s for sure. Only when laminate was well established in floor technology did producers start deviating from wood decors to introduce other colours and designs as well. Since laminate resulted from a combination of photography and printed material, one of its initial limitations was the monotony of the floorboards. All the planks in the pack were identical, something which was virtually impossible with real wood. That certainly made laminate ‘look’ cheaper. Then, there was the feel. Laminate didn’t have any feel. Its surface was smooth, yet the look did not correspond to the feel when you touched it. The surface was hard, but completely smooth. That meant another contrast with real wood. Better photography and printing technology helped to overcome the initial flaw. Each plank became different, so floors became less repetitive. The feel was dealt with later. The recently discovered embossed in register technique (see also the frame piece) now allows us to transfer the wood grain to the laminate surface so that you get the feel of real wood.

And then the rest Laminate has made the grade thanks to its powerful imitation of wood together with lots of other features which clients appreciate: low maintenance, anti-static, antibacterial, and endless decorative options. However, the penchant for wood finds expression in other forms of floor technology and building materials. Amongst types of floors we can immediately mention vinyl, PVC, and linoleum. Here, too, the stress is on the designs offered on wood decors. Those floors are also the result of photography and print technology. Here, too, although some floors really are thin, manufacturers have provided relief to give you the real feel of wood grain. Furthermore, wood imitations in the building sector are ‘legion’: PVC outdoor joinery adopted the look of wood at a very early stage, whilst certain synthetics or composites have imitated wooden sidings or wall planks for years.

Visit www.floor-forum.com

So now there’s ‘ceramic’ as well The day came when it seemed as if just about all building materials were available in a lookalike of wood without actually being wood. Stone was the only one missing. This seems logical; stone, natural stone, or ceramic tiles have their own markets and, in particular, their own assets. In natural stone we find ‘natural’ variants which have nothing to do with imitation. In ceramic tiles we find an endless range of decors. Some ceramic tiles endeavour to imitate natural stone and they do it with success.

The step towards wood Since just about anything is possible here, too, it is only a small step towards wood decors. Ceramic floor manufacturers have grasped the success story of wood decors and their considerable assets. If you can imitate the look of a parquet or wooden floor impeccably with the properties of a stone floor, you certainly have a ‘cast-iron’ product.

Ceramic tiles with the look of wood We’re not going to use the term ‘ceramic parquet’ any more, even though the product is conquering the markets under that banner. ‘Parquet’ is reserved for wooden floors with a real wood top layer of at least 2.5mm. Ceramic tiles are building products baked from clay. They are used both indoors on walls or floors and outdoors on walls and on the ground. We call them wall tiles or floor tiles, depending on the usage. Ceramic tiles are available glazed or unglazed, compact, sealed or porous, pressed, and available in different thicknesses.

Available anywhere As we’ve said, the manufacturers of ceramic tiles have discovered the success of wood decors. Ceramic tiles are appearing in just about every showroom and are on offer in a good number of wood sorts. These wood decors are on offer in the form of both glazed tiles and full ceramic tiles. You can easily see the benefits of this new type of floor. It gives you a fully washable and waterproof floor covering with the authentic look of a parquet or wooden floor. Here, too, you can feel the grain. Not only is there a wide variety of wood sorts, but the number of available sizes is remarkably high. This is obviously good news for consumers, who now get Photo – VM-TEGELS another extra option.

Sanding machines : part 3

VERSATILE MACHINES COVER LITERALLY EVERY CORNER AND EDGE BATTERY-POWERED APPLIANCES ARE THE FUTURE

Photo – Lägler GmbH

Whenever you finish a floor, there comes a time when you need some of the less prominent machines, such as corner sanding machines. A floor is seldom perfect in shape, and that means there are some places which are

18

Floor Forum International 113

not so easy to reach. In such cases it is advisable to use a corner sanding machine. This is a sanding machine specially designed to sandpaper wood in places which are difficult to reach.

In this article we consider what is already available on the market and aim to find out primarily how the market is responding to the specific needs of parquet floor fitters. In short, what typifies professional corner sanding machines to enable them to sandpaper all corners and edges properly? We also consider specifically what details you should look out for when buying such a machine and whether or not there is a difference in equipment for smaller and residential sites as compared to larger project applications. Obviously, we concentrate mainly on the use of these machines on wooden floors, but at the same time we don’t forget that these machines can also be deployed for other surfaces. For instance, corner sanding machines can also process metal and stone and we note that these machines can also be used not only for sandpapering, but also for grinding and polishing.

Motors A vitally important question here is the engine. Generally speaking, sanding machines are driven by compressed air, petrol engines, or electricity. In various sectors we have noticed that petrol engines are gradually being discarded, even in the heavier work segment where traditionally only fossil fuels provided enough power. In the latter case, the ongoing advance of electric engines and, especially, of increasingly efficient batteries is just about the biggest issue.

The FLIP® is powerful, efficient and extremely easy to handle. In addition, it has a great extraction performance and thus enables almost dust-free work on construction sites. Almost no dust in the room or on the furniture - people and environment are protected! Housing as well as attachments are made of abrasionresistant, glass fiber reinforced plastic. This makes the FLIP® a very robust, durable and long-lasting machine.

Pallmann

Parquet floor fitters would tend not to use petrol-driven machines because a lot of their work is done indoors where you certainly don’t want to leave unpleasant emissions. The more pressing issue is how electricity is used to power a machine. Until now, most machines have had electric cables, but we do note a vast change. Until recently, battery-powered machines couldn’t in any way match the performances of machines with cables, but nowadays there is little difference, if any. Battery packs are now more handy, lighter, more powerful, and long-lasting. This means that benefits such as much greater mobility and the opportunity to work in places without the need for a mains connection are playing a much greater part in the choice.

Working hybrid: mains current and battery We have noticed with these battery machines that manufacturers are also consciously stressing another extra asset, namely ergonomics. If you have to tackle corners and edges, it’s not the easiest of jobs on the whole site. Since with battery machines you don’t have to bother about cables and, moreover, the batteries are getting lighter and lighter, it seems to us that it’s well worth finding out about these machines. Furthermore, don’t forget that you can combine the best of two worlds with each other in this manner. Manufacturers often take account of ‘hybrid’ situations, so it’s certainly worth getting more information if you notice that a corner sanding machine can be converted from running on battery to running via the mains.

Two specialists Lägler GmbH FLIP® - The ideal solution for processing edges and corners! Versatility - one machine, many possibilities! Coarse and fine sanding, milling, underfloor treatment - both wood and screed surfaces. The FLIP® manages all this effortlessly! Only the appropriate attachment is required. (You just need the right attachment). Short, long, corner or milling attachment - change the attachment easily and quickly directly on site! The FLIP® can be adapted to individual construction site conditions whenever necessary.

For the sanding of edges and stairs Pallmann offers the sanding machines Pallmann Gecko Star 2.0 and Pallmann Gecko Flex. With its high performance, first-class sanding results and unparalleled smoothness, the Pallmann Gecko Star 2.0 is indispensable for comfortable sanding in the edge area. Its sanding attachment is available in two different sizes and allows also sanding under radiators. The machine comes with a robust housing and balanced weight for maximum sanding pressure with high power (1500 watts). The exceptional extraction technology with options between dust bag system and adapter for a vacuum cleaner ensure a clean working. The LED technology provides optimal illumination of the working area. The weight is approximately 9,6 kg. With a weight of 4,5 kg the Pallmann Gecko Flex is lighter and handier. This lightweight fully exploits its advantages especially when sanding stairs or smaller sites. Owners of the Pallmann Spider often rely on this machine because the offered Velcro discs fit to both machines. An optimum position of the handle, an almost dust-free sanding and a high removal rate are further advantages. It comes with a 1.5 kW original Flex Engine and flexible speed regulation: 1,400 – 4,200 rounds per minute.

Renzo Borgonovo / Figli di Nando Trabattoni (FNT) (I)

“THE ART OF HOT EMBOSSING”

Mr. Matteo Trabattoni of FNT Srl (left) and Mr. Luca Borgonovo of Renzo Borgonovo (right)

Placed on the northern edge of the Po River Plain, the most developed industrial region of Italy, not far from the major cities of Milano and Como, the companies Renzo Borgonovo and Figli di Nando Trabattoni (FNT) have developed, during their 60 years of partnership, a strong collaboration based on mutual respect and appreciation which has made possible the constant evolution of the hot embossing technology offered and popularized by the two brands. Founded in the late 50s and early 60s of the last century, FNT and Renzo Borgonovo moved their first steps within the sector of frames and linear profiles finishing, where they enjoyed outstanding results, supplying all over the world mainly cold embossing machines (among other machinery) and embossing moulds to engrave the products with the help of wood pulp. Following the changing of the international markets, the machinery manufactured and the technology exploited started to evolve, and the two companies began to focus more on units able to process wider work-pieces and to operate with the use of a heating source. This brought to the creation of the first Hot Embossing machines, which made use of methane or propane gas for the heating of the

20

Floor Forum International 113

embossing roller, which now needed to engrave directly onto the wood, without any intermediary agent. The first hot embossing machines, developed in the late 60s and still working on a width no bigger than 150 mm, were featuring a heating system made by Bunsen burners, and may look fairly rudimental in the eyes of a current day customer. The burners emitted open flames that directly hit and thus heated the embossing roller, and, despite being very effective, the system had not real control over the roller’s temperature and was probably not so energy efficient and surely not up to the current safety standards. With the years, the machines grew wider and sturdier, being able to accommodate work-pieces as big as small panels, but the real evolution came with the changing of the burner, passing from an open flame system to a gas limited and controlled heating system. This change was a great step forward for the safety and quality of the machine, since it allowed the control of the embossing roller’s temperature and, starting from these models, the machines got equipped with a HMI software, and thus a Touch Screen. While in later years the machine became bigger and reached even 1300 mm of working width, the unit preferred and most purchased within the parquet and flooring sector remained, throughout the years, a middle size unit, with an embossing capacity of up to 500 mm in width.

This same unit is, for about four years now, available with a heating system run by electrical lamps: this last update, which has quickly become the favorite and most-purchased version of the hot embossing machines, made possible the overcome of many technical and safety issues, since the unit features no gas usage whatsoever. The current version of the model targeting the flooring sector is thus an electrically heated machine, with an embossing roller with a working-width of 500 mm, a touch screen to operate most of the machine’s parameters, a transport system with inverters which automatically synchronize the upper and lower dragging rollers, and a user friendly embossing roller changing device, which make it possible to uninstall a roller mould and install back a different one in about 10 minutes. This latter feature optimizes the versatility of the machine, which is able to engrave different patterns by changing the upper embossing rollers. The manufacturing know-how and the quality of these essential tools have done giant leaps over the years, as well. Starting from basic linear frame drawings, the design has evolved, pushed by newer and more complex demands, and by exploiting more and more technologically advanced instruments, Renzo Borgonovo and FNT are now able to replicate on roller the negative of extremely complex patterns, which, when used to engrave on wood, result in outstandingly accurate natural patterns, modern and geometric drawings, and aged-wood looks. Other than the hundreds of patterns already available, the two companies develop new rollers every year, and provide the service of designing patterns from the scanning of real material, if customers have in their hands something they wish to replicate. The art of ennobling wood profiles, flooring planks, kitchen and wall panels at an industrial level as always passed through machinery: with the technology manufactured by Renzo Borgonovo and FNT the customer will obtain a sturdy and versatile companion, capable of handling successfully the most demanding tasks. Lacquers which finishes durably in one coat perfectly well

A FLOOR NEEDS MORE THAN JUST MAINTENANCE IS THE CHOICE BETWEEN LACQUER AND OIL NOW EASIER DUE TO NEW APPLICATION BENEFITS?

Photo – Blanchon

In opting for a lacquered floor, both your client and you as a professional have made clear choices. One of the main reasons for choosing lacquer is to have a floor with low maintenance (both daily and periodic maintenance), certainly because lacquer as a finish coat does not fade away and is rigid. Unlike with oil, this therefore means that you seal off the wood entirely from any dirt and fluid. In making this choice, you have intentionally discussed some of the drawbacks of parquet with the client, such as the fact that this finish is vulnerable to wear and scratches and the floor will have to be re-lacquered within a few years. You have also pointed out that wear

22

Floor Forum International 113

in high-traffic places will become visible and that it is difficult, if not impossible, to restore a lacquer surface in patches since that would yield differences in gloss. And so, you really need to treat the whole surface again each time. You have to weigh up the reality of much easier maintenance against labour-intensive (and expensive) re-lacquering every so often. Now, it is simply a fact that it is much more bother to eradicate damage from a parquet floor. This means that, if scratches occur, you first have to sandpaper the floor to resolve this properly. It is impossible to eradicate even minor damage, so you have to re-lacquer the entire floor. Anyone who cannot face that really should choose oil, which, moreover, is often rather cheaper than lacquer.

Best of two worlds

Three specialists

We wondered how producers would set about combining the best of both worlds (i.e. oil and lacquer). As we know, lacquers not only mean applying several coats, but also you have to allow a certain drying time. That’s not all! You also have to clean and scour the floor thoroughly in advance, you cannot afford to omit any part of the floor when sandpapering (we don’t want to have an adverse effect on a lacquer’s adhesion process), and you should repair any damage to the wood first.

Discover the market range All this means that anyone who can launch a lacquer on the market to give a finish in one single coat is providing you, the parquet floor fitter, with a very useful ‘weapon’. This will not eliminate the process of lacquering, but it will certainly reduce its time and scope. And so, it seemed perfectly legitimate to put the following question to the market: ‘Who has a parquet lacquer which provides a perfect finish in a single coat and is durable?’ Actually, we followed up that question with a number of subsidiary questions, such as: Is it better to opt for the durability, chip resistance, and scratch resistance of a dual-component lacquer or isn’t that necessary (any more)? Or: Does the option of a new formulation also result in a considerably shorter drying time? All this has led to a highly interesting article in which we leave it up to you to discover what the market has in store for parquet professionals.

Blanchon The ‘one-coat’ varnish enjoyed a certain popularity in the 1980s, but that fad didn’t last long. That was because the need for a rapid and therefore affordable finish had to face up to reality. Wood is a carrier which reacts if moistened by a fluid, be it water, a solvent, or a greasy substance. We believe a varnish in a single coat is certainly possible, but only as a coat of varnish applied to a primer, usually with a rapid drying time. The varnish itself should aim primarily for high-quality protection from wear and perfectly easy application. If you apply just one single coat, all

the shortcomings become visible and adversely affect the end result. And so, generally speaking, we tend to recommend three coats (or two on a hard surface). That takes nothing away from the fact that a finish in a single coat is certainly possible! Let’s further clarify the above. If you want a visually perfect finish which is exceptionally resistant to high traffic, it’s best to opt for two or three coats. If you prefer a lower cost price or a faster finish, you can opt for a finish on a hard surface. The main point is that it all depends on how we define ‘resistance to wear’. For instance, one coat is not advisable for high-traffic places, such as catering establishments. However, if the floor is designed for modest ‘family and domestic’ use, a single-coat finish can certainly be considered. Although we advise specialist parquet floor fitters to use three coats, we are launching our ‘Renovation Glazer’ on the market. As the name suggests, this product has been developed for renovating most parquet floors (e.g. glazed, oiled, etc.), either on site or in the factory. This product is applied in a single coat to a carrier which is prepared without sandpapering.

It is recommended to sand after each coat of lacquer applied in order to have a soft and smooth effect. The maintenance of floors treated with ECØ V must be done with neutral pH water-based products.

Who still does inlay work/marquetry?

CONFIRMATION OF A TREND TOWARDS SPECIAL FITTING METHODS? HISTORIC CRAFTSMANSHIP IN 2020

Photo – Design Parquet

If there is one discipline to test a parquet floor fitter’s skill to the uttermost, it is surely whenever he or she dares to take on the traditional form of marquetry or inlay work. This is certainly the case if we mean marquetry where that same professional starts with original solid wood and makes all the pieces of the pre-designed object himself or herself. Marquetry, which allows you to connect different sections to each other like a puzzle, is not the sole preserve of parquet floors. On the contrary, it also finds various historical applications in furniture. Craft workers used not only various sorts of wood, but even turtle or ivory, which they used to form a sandwich. Yes, marquetry was used even in walls of buildings. How does it work? First of all, you make a drawing of the object. By sawing along the lines of the drawing through the various layers, you create several parts which are then assembled. With marquetry it is possible to compile both geometrical patterns and detailed depictions. A well known example of this are the furniture items of furniture maker Jan van Mekeren in the late 17th century.

Range on the market Since our editors have also noticed that traditional fitting patterns are clearly growing in popularity, we made enquiries on the market as to how inlay work is faring at present. We looked beyond the traditional professional and asked manufacturers how they are responding to the

Photo – Design Parquet

market demand for special patterns. We asked all sorts of questions, including how fitters go about the cutting. Traditional marquetry is typical handwork with cutting, so we also wanted to know how this goes down if the cutting is done automatically e.g. with a laser. We found equally interesting the question as to how popular marquetry really is on the market. Is it still something solely for the happy few or, on the other hand, has the market opened up somewhat? We asked for statistics to see how the market shares of traditional inlay work on the one hand and the mechanical counterpart on the other are faring. Obviously, this led to the necessary follow-up questions, such as how the market is developing. Is it a temporary phenomenon or, on the contrary, can we expect further advances of special fitting patterns such as marquetry? Does it mean increased demand for purely classic work or is the market showing special trends, whether or not through the influence of architects or interior designers?

Regional differences In all this, we also wanted to know if there are any regional differences in marquetry. What do we see in Belgium? Are there any noticeable differences in taste between Flanders and Wallonia? What about the rest of Europe and even the rest of the world? Finally, we browsed around with a question about the technical aspects of fitting marquetry. What do fitters have to look out for when fitting inlay work? Obviously, we wanted to know about the entire trajectory, from the preparation of the substrate to the final finish inclusive.

Who still makes industrial parquet and in what form?

FACTORY FLOOR BECOMES A DESIGN STATEMENT INDUSTRIAL PARQUET (OR ENGINEERED PARQUET) WINS OVER MORE ARCHITECTS

Amongst special fitting patterns, industrial parquet (sometimes called engineered parquet) is more or less an outsider. Indeed, this type of parquet was originally a floor which consisted literally of ‘ leftovers’. There are good reasons why engineered parquet, which comprises blocks or

mats of strips bound together (using tape or a net) in 100% solid wood in various sizes and thicknesses, is also called industrial parquet. Initially, it was fitted in public areas and factories.

Who still makes industrial parquet and in what form?

These floors made their way into more homes as a general industrial look in living rooms became more popular. Generally speaking, architects appreciate industrial parquet because its unique and rigid look gives living rooms a specific character, so its suitability extends beyond the scope of project floors. These floors also have several striking assets, with their great stability and strength guaranteeing a long lifespan. Most applications draw on common types of wood, but it goes beyond that. These floors are even fitted in bamboo, and all this with a wellnigh endless range of colours.

The surplus of the professional Even professionals will certainly have experienced that industrial parquet (or engineered parquet, if you prefer) is enjoying a new lease of life. This is something which manufacturers have also understood, as testified to by the many applications which they are launching on the market and which we introduce to you below. The ‘renaissance’ of this fitting pattern is actually nothing but good news for you as a parquet floor fitter. After all, the fitting does require considerable expertise and, moreover, is considerably labour-intensive. If we consider just the preparation for the fitting, some things immediately become clear. For instance, it is absolutely essential that industrial parquet is glued onto a flat screed. Since the parquet consists of strips, they are never completely level after the fitting, so sandpapering several times after the fitting is vitally important. After that, the joints between the strips have to be filled in using a paste made from the sanding dust. After that initial filling, it is necessary to sandpaper the parquet once again before the parquet can be finished.

therefore resistant to differents impacts. Due to a reclaimed product, his price is quite interesting. This Industrial wood is not so expensive but requires it a long time to lay this type of floor due to its size.

Futura Floors Impeccable beauty and durability of industrial parquet

Also on floor heating It’s also worth knowing that industrial parquet is a good option if you choose to fit a floor onto floor heating. You need to consider several factors and it’s not a bad idea to explain them in extra detail to clients. For instance, you can tell them that a thinner industrial parquet will always be more effective because it conducts heat better. Moreover, it is best to explain why you intend to fit at least 30mm of screed on top of the heating pipes. You should stress how important it is to keep fluctuations in temperature to a minimum. You should also explain why it is vital to use the day and night function constantly as a thermostat setting. Finally, some other advice which you should certainly give is that, just as with other parquet floors, it is important to monitor the air humidity properly. For instance, the air indoors should not be too dry because that could cause the parquet to split or show ruptures. And so, various factors mean that the relative air humidity should be kept between 45% and 60%.

Two specialists Design Parquet Industrial wood flooring is a solid wood flooring in industrial strips for 99%. This wood flooring is laid only in glued laying. Supplementary business

THE FLOOR FITTER’S SHOPPING TROLLEY GETS BIGGER AND BIGGER THE SIZE OF THE RANGE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Photo – Alsapan

The improvement in the quality of a whole series of floor coverings has induced parquet floor fitters to widen their range. Those other floors have won the respect of consumers through that refined quality, and that means floor fitters no longer consider those floors beneath their ‘ dignity’. Opening up to include other floor coverings immediately gives floor fitters access to the whole house: bedrooms, landings, the study, the play room, the kitchen, and, yes, the bathroom.

Consumers want a choice The idea of selling goods via an electronic channel has been common practice in the world of business for a long time. We call this e-business or e-commerce. Some people use those two terms as synonyms,

30

Floor Forum International 113

whilst others see e-commerce as a component (on the sales side) of e-business, which is the more comprehensive term. Digital shopping, which emerged mainly within a business-to-business relationship, has now certainly reached the consumer market, and how! Like a whirlwind! Or like a bulldozer! Its rise has been so fast and extensive that some people have doubts about whether or not existing retail models can survive. What stands out now? That the real big guns which dominate global e-commerce are those companies with the biggest range. Of the so called ‘dot coms’ it’s the giants who survive. Amazon.com is a good example. It started by selling books and CDs, but now you can probably order toothbrushes as well. In other words, consumers want the widest possible choice at a single address. We also see that same attitude towards choosing floor coverings, although, thankfully, that

is still done ‘analogue’. The vendor which offers EVERYTHING gets the most customers inside the store.

Parquet traders are alert

lot to be desired. Nowadays, however, we find premium laminate floors in the upper segment. Parquet floor fitters have been converted in their masses, possibly also because laminate has been a real success story.

Even parquet floor fitters trained in the traditional way have now realised that standing still means going backwards. You have to be prepared to adapt or else you sink. To arrive at that realisation, parquet traders had to grasp two important insights. Faith in the value of the products so that the idea of a one-stop-shop becomes acceptable is one of them. Secondly, parquet traders have had to shed their fear of cannibalisation.

Pre-finished

The value of the articles As we’ve already said, it was mainly the improved quality of a whole series of other floors that induced parquet floor fitters to extend their ranges. Those other floors have won the respect of consumers through that refined quality, and that means floor fitters no longer consider those floors beneath their ‘dignity’. Vinyl, PVC, linoleum, cork, laminate, and bamboo are all floor coverings which now ‘cut the mustard’.

Originally, cork appeared in two forms. There was cork to be glued and cork floors to be fitted floating. Obviously, we also have cork as a wall furnishing. Cork floors are glued by glueing both the tiles and the subfloor. They are pressed into place with a rubber hammer. Floating cork floors are comparable with parquet and laminate in many respects. They usually have a click system so that they can be fitted quickly and easily.

No cannibalisation

Bamboo

Parquet floor fitters have been plagued for years by the fear that if you ‘win’ a customer for laminate, LVT, or something similar, you ‘lose’ that customer for parquet. That argument does sound logical at first sight; anyone who fits laminate on the landing or in the children’s room certainly isn’t fitting parquet. However, the misconception lay in the fact that professionals underestimated the end users. Whenever consumers opted for laminate or cork in the bedroom, it was a conscious choice, usually after much deliberation. In other words, if a particular floor fitter isn’t prepared to fit laminate or cork, the customer will look for another professional who will fit those floors.

Bamboo isn’t wood, but rather a type of grass. However, thanks to its often outlined production techniques, bamboo lends itself ideally to making wooden panels from which parquet can be produced. As regards type, the various bamboo floor coverings are the same as what the wooden flooring market offers. And so, this is also something for parquet floor fitters.

The shopping trolley Partly thanks to digital print technology, it is possible to get one and the same decor for a particular floor covering for other floor coverings as well. That means we can offer customers a continuous floor which consists of different forms of technology, adapted more or less to the application. What riches floor fitters have!

Solid wood parquet There was a time when a parquet floor fitter’s headquarters consisted of nothing more than a room with a few samples (usually in oak) and behind that room a workshop with a woodwork machine. The table in the consultation room housed a photograph album of references. The major part of fitting a traditional parquet floor took place on site. The older generation of parquet floor fitters simply weren’t open to innovations or products and systems which deviated from tradition.

Multilayer It was a big step to accept multilayer parquet. Obviously, that step is now history, but in those days it required parquet floor fitters to ‘deviate from the normal system’ to a new working method. The classic floor structure (subfloor and final floor) was put in place in advance with these multilayer floors. However, the benefits soon became clear. Two and three-layer parquet has conquered the world. Floating fitting made its entrance.

Laminate The most shocking event for parquet floor fitters was undoubtedly the entrance of laminate. In the early days, very few parquet floor fitters were prepared to ‘stoop down’ to fit such a counterfeit floor. Now, it must be said that in the early days the quality of laminate floors left a

If laminate is regarded as a fully fledged alternative to wooden floors, the same applies a fortiori to pre-finished floors. These floors, which are completely ready for fitting, are finished in the factory and save floor fitters a lot of time on site. Pre-finished floors are equipped with a click system and are fitted in identical fashion to laminate.

Cork

Vinyl tiles and planks A vinyl floor is an elastic synthetic (PVC) floor covering consisting of several layers, namely the bottom layer or back, a protective fibre-glass layer, the design, and the top layer. The durability of vinyl depends on the thickness of the top layer and the solidarity of the base structure. An extra protective layer increases the scratch and wear resistance. There are big differences in quality and price within the range.

PVC tiles PVC is an ideal material for floor production. It is waterproof and thereby suitable for damp rooms. 100% PVC floors are even suitable for showers. They are highly durable thanks to the reinforcement PU coating. PVC floors appear nowadays in a wide variety of decors. In recent years, here, too, we have seen the emergence of click systems so that these floors can be fitted floating quickly and easily. We refer to those floors as Click PVC.

Linoleum Linoleum has made great strides over the years. It is no longer the floor covering which some of us will remember from hospitals. Linoleum was given that ‘lead role’ due to its antibacterial properties and its great durability and wear resistance. These floors are extremely easy to maintain and, in their fully glued form, they have excellent acoustic properties. Nowadays, linoleum is available in lanes, strips, and tiles. The possible choices in terms of decors and colours are well nigh endless. Here, too, producers have discovered the click system.

‘Other’ floors For several years now, most floor producers have profiled themselves as innovation-driven. That’s why, in recent years, ‘new’ types of floors have been developed which are often combinations of previous floor coverings. Vinyl with cork, wood and cork, wood with vinyl, and laminate with vinyl or even leather spring to mind here. Others launch floors which are undoubtedly based on a different (unique) technology.

Wintersteiger (AT)

WINTERSTEIGER TRC PRECLEAN COMPLETES THE TRC PRODUCT RANGE PRE-CLEANING, REPAIR, AND DESIGN OF TIMBER SURFACES

With the new TRC Preclean, the pre-cleaning of top layers is now also fully automatic. The system completes the TRC product range, meaning the pre-cleaning, repair, and design of wooden surfaces can be fully automated with the TRC Preclean, TRC 1500, and TRC Manufactory trio of solutions.

Variant: TRC 1500 NT for non-thermoplastic filling material.

Before repairing defects, it used to be necessary to manually pre-clean raw planks. For example, bark inclusions or soft parts are removed from knotholes while cracks or similar defects are cleaned. The new TRC Preclean enables automated pre-cleaning. It scans the defects and processes these areas, leaving the wood with a completely natural appearance.

The TRC Manufactory comes into effect in the third process step, guaranteeing a unique surface every time. The machine finishes materials that have already been repaired and ground, such as raw planks or furniture panels. The TRC Manufactory scans and analyses each plank, and the software creates an individual program for surface processing each plank. The machine offers a wide range of processing options, such as milling/grinding of side edges, grinding of knots, wood grain processing, milling out cracks, and much more. The individual processing makes each end product unique and impresses through both look and feel. “With this trio of systems, Wintersteiger offers a complete solution for the pre-cleaning, repair, and surface treatment of top layers. The TRC systems massively improve quality and performance. The umbrella term TRC stands for high quality timber cosmetics with vast potential for rationalization. Whether semi or fully automatic, Wintersteiger has the right solution for wood surface design,” explains Franz Söllhinger, head of the Woodtech business field.

Process-optimized alternate processing of two clamping tables allows secondary processes such as loading and unloading, scanning, and evaluation to be carried out while defects are being cleaned. The TRC Preclean can be upgraded with additional modules and can process plank layers and boards up to 2,500 x 1,300 mm.

TRC 1500, fully automatic wood surface repair. Pre-cleaning is followed by the repair of the timber surface. The fully automatic injection unit of the TRC 1500 works in tandem with an application unit, significantly increasing capacity. The application unit with a special application system fills smaller defects with filling material, which is then subsequently rolled in. As before, larger defects are repaired using an injection unit. This results in an excellent price/ performance ratio. The TRC 1500 also makes the automated repair of top layers possible for the first time.

This machine, a further development of the TRC 1500, operates with a non-thermoplastic filling material and therefore extends the possible range of applications.

RACE FOR THE STRONGEST LOCK LOCKING SYSTEMS ARE THE ULTIMATE REASON FOR FITTING THESE FLOORS

Laminate has undergone vast changes. Whilst it was initially little more than a set of pressed layers piled on top of each other and it could hardly bear comparison with the real wooden product, it has now developed into a fully fledged floor. Gone are the days of annoying creaking sounds, problems with tiny drops of water, and shabby impact resistance, not to mention the troublesome fitting.

34

Floor Forum International 113

The sector soon realised that laminate floors had much more potential if only they were easier to fit. Initially, that meant not only applying tongue and groove, for instance, but also aiming explicitly for a floating fitting without the need for adhesive. The latter has the clear advantage of (much) faster fitting, something which professionals are only too happy to tell their clients.

Obviously, there’s a lot more on the market, and here you probably think mainly of the systems such as Uniclic, Unifit, and Multifit or Unidrop by Unilin, the company behind Quick-Step and Pergo. Uniclic was the first locking profile for one piece on the market and has become hugely popular over the years due to its efficiency and technical performances. This system requires no adhesive and can be applied on both the short and the long side of the floor panel. The system is suitable for all types of material from 3.2mm upwards. Unifold is a two-piece fold-down system, which uses a plastic insert which facilitates strong locking in combination with flexible fitting. It can be used for all types of material, but is applied mainly for thicker and less flexible core materials. If we look at Multifit, we notice that this is used for fitting engineerd parquet. The panels can simply be clicked into each other thanks to an ingenious shape of the tongue and groove. Multifit makes it possible to fit the planks in three different ways: clicking them into each other at an angle of 20 to 30 degrees, pressing them down on the short side, or sliding them into each other horizontally with a suitable tapping block. At Unidrop they have one-piece fold-down technology without adhesive, which doesn’t use any plastic inserts and guarantees easy fitting on the short sides of the floor panel. This can be used for all sorts of materials, but is used mainly for materials with some flexibility because the material itself creates the locking. Unidrop is therefore also suitable for laminate.

Nowadays, we notice that what used to resemble open warfare has ALL MATERIALS, ALL FORMATS developed into an ‘armed peace’ in which the patents are in the hands of a few suppliers and various manufacturers come knocking on their NO INSERTS, NO PLASTIC doors. Drop Lock/Fold down One of the most noticeable features of the laminate sector at present is that professionals use the so called Drop-Lock or Fold down system. This system involves literally allowing the planks to ‘fall’ or ‘fold’ into each other in order to connect them. The big advantage is that the planks are not clicked into each other, but they are connected to each other so that they can swell and shrink.

If we look at the market, we see, amongst others, I4F, providing patents and technologies to the flooring industry, with its 3L TripleLock and Click4U systems that are widely used worldwide and especially popular for new flooring materials. This popularity stems from the systems’ ease of installation consisting of merely dropping and locking the tongue and groove sides of planks together without the for any inserts. US T RY ’S needs INNOVAT ION PA R T NE R OF CHOICE I4F’s 3L TripleLock is a one piece drop-lock installation system for the short side of floor panels. It is unlike other ‘fold-down’ systems because it eliminates the need for inserts. Obviously, that has advantages, the main one for installers and end-users being easier and faster installation, in fact up to 30% faster than basic clicks. For manufacturers this delivers higher productivity level, a reduction in costs and a lower ecological footprint. Click4U is I4F’s angle-system for the long side that combined with 3L TripleLock on the short side provides extremely high levels of locking strength. Just like 3L TripleLock, is suitable for existing high speed production machinery. The combination of 3L TripleLock and Click4U offer several installation advantages, including no squeaking and the fact that you don’t need any special fitting tools. Moreover, both systems can be used on all materials including laminate, as well as luxury vinyl tiles, expanded polymer core, solid polymer core and wooden flooring panels.

The Swedish company Välinge, which is also a pioneer in mechanical click systems. Here we can hardly ignore their 5G locking system, which is ideal for both wooden and laminate flooring products, with thicknesses of up to 22mm and more. What happens here is that when a panel is ‘folded down’, a flexible plastic tongue is pressed into a tongue and groove connection. Once the panel has reached its end position, the tongue moves to the front in a wedge groove and a click sound indicates that the product is locked in place. The manufacturer also mentions in this connection the easy and rapid fitting and particularly stresses the strong closure as a result of the plastic tongue. This can be used for thicknesses only up to 4mm (with the note that 2G can even be used up to only 3mm) because this is in response to very thin and flexible floors such as LVT. We have also noticed a recent interesting extension to the range in the 5G Climb. This is a response to the fact that the floor should also be able to join the wall seamlessly as high as you wish. Climb is based on the 5G floor systems where the wall panels are clicked into place horizontally, vertically, and in a herringbone pattern. Specially developed clips are used for this and the panels are fastened to a sort of mounting. 5G Dry has also been launched on the market this year as a response to the need for improved water resistance. A fold down fitting system is used to ensure that damp can no longer penetrate into the floor panel joints.

There were no specific figures available when this magazine went to press, but it is already apparent that this government is having to improvise a lot. At the start of November, Belgium was top of a list of 31 European countries in terms of corona infections. This illustrates indirectly how difficult it is to govern this country.

Economic dynamism

It’s no coincidence that Belgium gave rise to surrealism. The country certainly has an ideal central location in Europe, with Brussels having housed European institutions for several decades. However, it certainly isn’t the easiest place to do business, partly due to its form of government. Some matters are decided at federal level, others at regional level, and you need to be steeped in constitutional law to be absolutely sure of what’s decided where. The only way to understand Belgium is to delve into its history. When the country was officially created in 1830, this was mainly to keep the then European major powers apart from each other and thereby reduce the chance of any conflict. And so, Belgium was born, but the result, for convenience, was that basically two totally different linguistic communities had to ‘enjoy each other’s company’ and share a king from the house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a German dynasty. Nowadays, we make a simple caricature of the whole business. In the north we have Flanders, Wallonia in the south, and in the middle Brussels, of which up to the present time not a single Belgian has established whether this is now Flemish, Walloon, or some other sort of territory. Dutch is spoken in the north, French in the south, and both languages in the centre, but all that doesn’t make communication any easier. That has been further illustrated by the recent government formation. This time, after the elections of 26 May 2019, negotiations lasted no fewer than 493 days before the players eventually formed a government for Belgium. Yet even that wasn’t a record in recent history. That honour fell to the government of the Walloon socialist Elio Di Rupo, which was sworn in on 6 December 2011 after 541 days of negotiations.

If we consider the country from an economic perspective, there, too, we see a different dynamism between both parts of the country (for the sake of convenience, let’s forget that there is even a small German-speaking region). Whilst at the start of the 20th century it was mainly the industrialised Wallonia which was thriving, in recent decades the balance has shifted to the other side with a much more wealthy Flanders. Obviously, the parquet industry also shows a similar dynamic. This takes nothing away from the fact that Belgium is only a minor player in wooden floor production (production in 2019 was 41,576m² for a total value of 1,523,833 euros i.e. 36.86 euros per square metre). Moreover, other figures (obtained from Fedustria, the Belgian professional association of companies from the textile, wood, and furniture industries) show that covid 19 has severely hampered the parquet industry in 2020.

Production in NACE sector 1622 Whilst in 2019 there was a modest turnover of 23,355,000 euros in the NACE sector 1622 (production of parquet floors, NACE is an acronym which means General Nomenclature of Economic Activities in the European Communities), it was clear well before the end of 2020 that the total amount would fall sharply. The first six months recorded a sharp fall of almost 35% (in the first six months of 2020 there was a turnover of 8,443,000 euros as compared to 12,855,000 in the first six months of 2019). A fall as a result of covid 19 is only logical, but nevertheless it has been particularly sharp. If we compare this with another sector which has been in difficulty in recent years, namely the furniture sector, we note that the latter has stood up much better. In the first six months of 2020, the turnover of the Belgian furniture industry was 924.7 million euros, a fall of 12.1% as compared to the first six months of 2019, and that speaks volumes.

Top Belgian companies focused on export

SOUDAL Soudal started in 1966 as a welding company specialising in car bodywork repairs. The company has come a long way in transforming itself into a family multinational specialising in chemical solutions for the building industry; one word pervades the transformation: innovation. ‘If you leave everything as it is, nothing will change.’ That was the guiding principle of founder Vic Swerts when Soudal was formed in 1966 and that is still the case now. The Soudal Group is now Europe’s biggest independent producer of putty, glues, and PU foams for both professional and private users. The Soudal Group makes products for its own trademark and private labels in seven groups: silicones and other types of putty, PU foams, adhesives, hybrid polymers, technical aerosols, and construction chemicals. With its own trademarks, the Soudal Group focuses on three market segments, namely construction, industry, and retail. Soudal has progressed from an annual turnover of a handful of francs in 1966 to 893 million euros in 2019. That figure represented a 7% increase in turnover as compared to 2018. Soudal presently employs about 3300 people, about one third of whom work at the headquarters in Turnhout. Vic Swerts comments: ‘You have to surround yourself with good and capable people who can do things better and know more than you do.’ The group’s annual capacity (in m²/l/kg) is 105,000,000 foam cans, 260,000,000 shafts, 10,000,000 tubes, and 100,000,000kg of silicones and glues. In 2021, as in previous years, Soudal will continue to launch efficient and ecological products. In addition to soil, bricks and state-of-theart technology, we also continue to invest with enthusiasm in our sophisticated climate change strategy. The focus there is on reducing VOCs, refining ergonomics, and reducing impact on the environment. The showpiece of all our investments is undoubtedly Plant 5, an 20,000 sq. metre factory (under construction). When Plant 5 in Turnhout is commissioned, the factories at Soudal headquarters, spread over three sites, will cover more than 210,000 sq. metres, of which approximately 95,000 sq. metres will be buildings. Soudal already operates globally with no fewer than 44 sales offices and 20 production plants and Soudal exports its products to over 138 countries. Soudal is still a 100% Belgian family business. +32 (0) 14 42 42 31 - info@soudal.com / www.soudal.com

HABO

Habo was founded in 1955 as an artisan furniture manufacture. In the early 80’s the family business switched to the production of 9mm solid overlay parquet. Since 10 years Habo also produces multilayer parquet. The product range now consists of Classic Line (6,3mm and 9mm solid parquet in strips, open book, herringbone, chevron, Versailles and other panels), Top Line (13mm and 18mm twolayer parquet) and made to measure in French oak and exotic woods. Known for its strict wood selections, Habo combines high quality parquet with beautiful finishes in different collections. The gradual growth throughout its history results in the current annual capacity of 250.000m². Habo recently built a brand new warehouse. The expansion of 4.000m² of storage allows for a better centralisation of the very extensive stocks of raw material and parquet. With its vast stocks Habo can offer quick and flexible solutions to professional parquet installers. +32 (0) 89 62 32 60 - info@habo.be / www.habo.be

Due to the high degree of digitization, standard designs can be manufactured in a cost-effective manner. “Custom made” is of course always possible. They can be applied as wall cladding or used as sun screens, uniting sophisticated design geometries with functionality. Our R&D department constantly works on new solutions able to integrate the louvers with all sorts of buildings, always putting a great attention on the easthetic result and the facility of installation. That’s why we created Novowood sliding panels system, that allows our customers to have elegant WPC profiles on different typologies of façade, rationalizing the passage of light and air in the building. The ‘Frame’ panels solution unites the beauty of Novowood profiles with the resistance of a visible varnished aluminium frame, for an elegant and materic solution. A strong vocation to minimalism charachterizes ‘Hidden Frame’ panels, where the aluminium structure is not visible, and the louvers become the real protagonists of the entire building.
