A few years ago, we noticed the disappearance of the ‘middle segment’ on the laminate market. At UNILIN they’ve seen this trend continue: ‘You can see a clear polarisation between less qualitative laminate versus premium laminate with properties such as waterproof qualities, a lifelong guarantee, and a natural look and feel. The middle segment, with a focus on beauty, is no longer in the frame. End users want to see beauty combined mainly with convenience.’

FLOOR FORUM INTERNATIONAL WISHES YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A SUCCESFUL 2018!

As regards that functional value, it is particularly the waterproof qualities of laminate which are a hot topic. Back in 2014, UNILIN launched on the market advanced threefold technology, which is designed to guarantee waterproof laminate floors by means of joints. We’re talking here about the watertightness of installed laminate floors, not the separate individual planks. This is a philosophy which UNILIN emphasises. That’s why the company advocates tests to make sure that laminate is waterproof once it is installed, and not tests for each individual plank. Ruben Desmet explains: ‘We can only describe laminate as completely watertight if the entire floor surface is impervious, therefore also the joints, floor-wall connections, etc.’ In the meantime, UNILIN has extended its technology to new collections, including recently laminate floors with no joint. Ruben Desmet continues: ‘Our waterproof laminate collections are doing very well on the market and ensure that laminate sales are growing. Our goal is to have waterproof products for all our laminate products within a few years.’ Apart from the practical features of a floor, the ecological impact is becoming increasingly important to consumers. ‘Since standards are getting increasingly strict, we also provide solutions in line with durability. For instance, we’re the first manufacturer to get the EU Ecolabel for laminate floors.’ The EU Ecolabel is an environmental inspection standard which is awarded to products and services which meet high ecological standards for the entire duration of their life cycle, from raw material extraction to production, distribution, and removal.

It is that convenience of premium laminate which ensures that it is less subject to competition from other ‘engineered floors’ such as multilayer parquet or veneer floors. Ruben Desmet continues: ‘The buying public is also different: end users who look for functional value such as low maintenance or waterproof qualities will tend to choose laminate.’

Hydrocork is a low thickness floating solution with a core board made of composite cork that can be placed in any indoor space without boundaries. It’s 100% waterproof and incredibly stable, while maintaining the resilient properties and unmatched comfort provided by cork. Due to its unique set of features: waterproof, only 6 millimeters thick, a very user-friendly PressFit vertical system and visual aesthetics in harmony with the latest market trends in interior design, Hydrocork is one of Wicander’s best sellers. Hydrocork’s installation is similar to other floating products. But what makes the product so unique is the revolutionary PressFit compression system that takes full advantage of the amazing cork properties - flexibility, elasticity and compressibility - functioning like a cork stopper. When it’s vertically inserted in the gap, the cork core automatically compresses. Then, it expands back to its initial shape, forming a tight and stable seal.

∂ Inside news Due to this compression system, Hydrocork’s installation is extremely easy. It only takes two simple steps - hold the two planks vertically side by side and press down along the joint with the help of a rubber hammer. The only tools that are needed for the installation are a rubber hammer (or a roll) and a cutter (or an electric saw, if preferred). Always make sure to follow the installation instructions provided, having in mind three crucial points: - Acclimatization: The material should be acclimatized at the job site in a dry, well-ventilated area for a minimum of 48 hours so that flooring may acclimate. - Subfloor requirements: Hydrocork can be installed on top of most hard surfaces such as resilient floor coverings and ceramic tiles as long as they are sufficiently fixed, completely leveled and have no loose areas.

Soft subfloors such as carpets and similars must be removed. For Hydrocork’s installation no underlay is required. - Expansion gaps: Hydrocork is tipically installed as a floating floor, so there is no need to fix the planks to the subfloor. Expansion gaps will be needed in some points: ensure to provide 5mm expansion gaps to the walls and other fixed objects. Transitions between two rooms and asymmetrical floor areas require extra expansion gaps in floor areas superior to 100m² or with dimensions bigger than 10m in either direction. Although Hydrocork is a floating solution it can also be glued if preferred. It is recommended to glue the product in cases where expansion joints must be avoided or in case the subfloor is not levelled. To do so, a one sided acrylic glue can be used, or any glue suited for PVCs or vinyls can be used in Hydrocork. Although there is no need for a specific training to install Hydrocork or any other of Wicander’s products, Wicanders provides training for those who want to have a deeper knowledge about its products. Artificial grass as a newcomer! This year, the organisers have decided to open the show to producers of artificial grass. After all, the vinyl, LV T, and parquet sectors show considerable common ground with that of artificial grass, not least because fitting artificial grass requires similar knowledge in areas such as techniques and glues. The fitter is expected to have the same know-how.

Rubio Monocoat (BE)

German Dealer Day ‘17

As a pioneer of high-quality and environmentally-friendly wood protection products, we have been focussing on a unique product for over 10 years, with a lot of success. Rubio® Monocoat oil sets itself apart from all other wood protection products with its unique technology of the molecular binding that happens between the oil and the cellulose fibres of the wood. The oil contains no (0%) VOC or water, can be applied in one coat and has as many as 40 standard colours. In addition to the assortment for interior and industry, the Rubio® Monocoat line also has an entire range of oils for protecting exterior wood, both vertical and horizontal. And since 2016, the demanding parquet installer can also glue his parquet professionally with our universal adhesives, which have an accompanying assortment of primers, fillers and tools. Today we are represented in 76 countries with their own branches in 23 countries ranging from Europe, across Australia, Mexico, Turkey, South-Africa and Scandinavia to distant Russia and America. In our domestic market of Belgium, we are also continuing to grow and there are still many more opportunities.

In addition to the continuing focus on innovative, sustainable and reliable products, we will also be specifically focussing on further developing a high degree of service to our customers at all levels of our company. The focus on customer-orientation will be enhanced in every department.

Production and marketing, as well as commercial internal services are based at the new Rubio® Monocoat plant. In the production, processes were simplified and optimised, so we can serve our customers even faster. Orders of stock products that come in before noon can be sent out the same day, under the supervision of our new Customer Service Manager, Bruno Carette. In opting for semi-automatic processes, we can quickly switch to a different product or colour variant, so that we can continue to guarantee that flexibility to the customers.

A significant component of the new Rubio® Monocoat site, is the ‘Rubio® Monocoat Academy’, a fully equipped training centre. Our technical team welcomes customers from all over the world with a smile and then completely immerses them in a Rubio® Monocoat bath. Gino Dewaele is a seasoned parquet installer, who likes to share his tips and facts for applying our products in the workplace. He will also teach you everything about the maintenance of wooden floors/furniture, including getting rid of stubborn stains. Sanding tips, recommended accessories, etc.... this is where you can learn it. We at Rubio® Monocoat don’t like lengthy presentations where we dwell on how great our products are. Just like you, we’d rather get to work on the wood. At the Rubio® Monocoat Academy, we go for the no-nonsense approach and let you do the work yourself. Because that is how you learn the most, right? The test floors in our training centre are diverse in terms of wood type and treatments, so that many different aspects of colouring and protecting wood can be addressed. In addition, the ‘Rubio® Monocoat Academy’ also includes a stock of machinery, with Patrick Aelbrecht in charge. He knows the Rubio® Monocoater and Spraycoater like the back of his hand and he flies all over the world to oversee the installations of these machines for industrial finishing teams from a to z. After one year, this training centre has proven to have hit the mark. Groups have already come from Vietnam, Romania, Sweden, Germany and Canada to get trained. And 2018 also promises to be a busy year. But, we can always squeeze in another visit; so, are you interested in some basic training for our entire assortment? Or are you more interested in a perfection course where you learn everything about the new products? Everyone is welcome at Rubio® Monocoat.

DOMOTEX RE-DESIGNS THE SHOW MAP HALL 9 IS THE CROWN JEWEL OF THE 30TH EDITION

Photo – Solidfloor™

Organising a trade fair (or any other show for that matter) is a constantly evolving project. One edition provides lessons for the next edition under the motto ‘we can always improve’. And so, it’s no surprise that the organisers of Domotex 2018 in Hannover have come up with some innovative changes. Those changes are designed to benefit both exhibitors and visitors. Although the show is still a few weeks away, it’s definitely worth having ‘a look ahead’.

12

Floor Forum International 92

Highlights summarised There can be absolutely no doubt that the 30th edition will be innovative. The world’s top carpet and floor covering show will leave the sector pleasantly surprised. It starts with a new configuration of the halls and a re-designed layout to make it easier for visitors to familiarise themselves quickly with exhibitors and trends that ‘count’. The main theme of the show is ‘UNIQUE YOUNIVERSE’ to make it clear that the show is focusing strongly on the increasing trend of individualisation in the interior. That theme will resound everywhere,

not least in the brand new initiative in HALL 9: an inspirational stroll through trends, innovation, and lifestyle. Everything is geared towards confronting visitors and exhibitors with specific and innovative ideas. Ideas to improve their ‘business’ in various respects. It is clear from the ‘figures’ that exhibitors like the ‘new approach’. The number of registered exhibitors is the same as in this period of registrations in 2017, but the hired space has exceeded expectations; a total of 1400 exhibitors are coming from 60 countries. The most prominent exhibitor countries are Turkey, India, Belgium, China, the Netherlands, Iran, Italy, Egypt, and the United States.

A clear summary The new configuration of the various halls literally brings together related product groups. This makes it easier for visitors, whatever their background (wholesale or retailer, architect or interior designer, professional trade or shops) to get to their destination quickly and get a summary of the range. Halls 2 to 4 show exhibits of the biggest range of hand-made carpets in the world. Halls 5 to 7 give visitors a unique range of carpets woven by machine. Hall 8 is temporarily the home base of the latest carpet creations from the most innovative designers and trademarks. Flexible floor coverings and vinyl tiles are housed in halls 11 and 12. Halls 12 and 13 accommodate parquet, wooden floors, and laminate. Hall 13 also offers a summary of the latest floor applications and installation products and systems. Organisers have also improved visitor comfort by linking the fair strongly with local public transport and especially with the brand new ‘My Domotex Shuttle’ service, the shuttle service which takes visitors and exhibitors quickly to their destination.

Hall 9 takes centre stage Hall 9 is now the crown jewel of Domotex 2018. This houses the ‘Framing Trends’ exhibition. Framing Trends is an exhibition where established companies and also successful newcomers and experts provide a link to the main theme (‘UNIQUE YOUNIVERSE’) via artistic and creative stands. Here visitors will see four zones where they can familiarise themselves with out-of-the-box ideas. The exhibition aims to create a strong interaction with visitors. In the ‘Flooring Spaces’ zone players from the floor covering sector relate to the trend of individualisation via extraordinary products. Furthermore, amongst other things, interior designers present inspirational rooms in the ‘Living Spaces’ zone. In the ‘Now Thinkers’ zone students and young designers supply a new definition of interior design throughout a jumble of unconventional ideas and prototypes of products. Finally, in the ‘Art & Interaction’ zone the main theme is clarified from the world of arts and design with a good dose of multimedia. The participants for the ‘Framing Trends’ are selected by a strictly exquisite panel of experts who have to decide whether or not candidates deserve a place.

Keynote speakers To support the inspirational range, the organisers present an extensive programme of talks: The ‘Domotex Talks’ relate to the main theme ‘UNIQUE YOUNIVERSE’. The speakers included renowned architects such as Jürgen Mayer H. (J.MAYER.H und Partner, Architekten MbB, Berlin), Andreas Krawczyk (NKBAK, Frankfurt/ Main), Chris Middleton (KINZO, Berlin), and Werner Aisslinger (Studio Aisslinger, Berlin). Moreover, the list of speakers also includes some founders of successful start-ups and some pioneering new-generation designers. The daily talks take place in the ‘Framing Trends’ in hall 9; they consist of three short talks, followed by a moderated panel forum. The discussions are about innovative projects

Visit www.floor-forum.com

and ideas relating to architecture and design. Three subjects are on offer: ‘Modular design: individual versus mass-produced?’, ‘New one-off originals: hand-made versus digital?’, and ‘Retail interactive: virtual versus real?’ apart from the speaker sessions, there are also daily Guided Tours in which visitors are accompanied by architects and designers. This will give visitors a better insight into the exhibited products and systems or realisations.

Also in Hall 9 Carpet Design Awards The Carpet Design Awards will also be presented in Hall 9. These international awards reward the best designers of carpets in eight separate categories. The 24 carpets (shortlist) which are competing for the awards are on display in Hall 9 for the entire duration of the fair.

Virtual reality Hall 9 is also focusing on virtual reality as a new tool which we can use to select a floor covering or, more generally, to design our interior. In this context Deutsche Messe has developed ‘Hackvention events series’, a series of international events which, amongst others, professionals, traders, or manufacturers can use to develop individualised products by means of virtual reality. Those events have already taken place in 2017, but their fruit will be on display at Domotex 2018.

Change to the opening days! From 2018 onwards, Domotex is abandoning its traditional ‘Saturday to Tuesday’ format. The opening days have been changed and the show will be open from Friday 12 January to Monday 15 January inclusive. This change is the result of repeated requests from various exhibitors.

Bijlard International “Our first participation in Domotex in 2017 was very encouraging”, according to the adhesive manufacturer from Zoetermeer. “It was our very first time, and we made many new foreign contacts. We're still working with them now.” There are also high expectations for the forthcoming edition. Last autumn, Bijlard presented two new products at the Interieur Collectie Dagen (Interior Collection Days) in the Netherlands. Now the rest of the world will be introduced to FLEXX FLOOR, which makes creaking floors a thing of the past thanks to its elastic properties, and GAP FILLER FLOOR, which allows simple treatment of annoying hollow sounds in bonded wooden floors. This year, Bijlard International can be found in the completely new hall 13: all parquet-related companies are located here, including many Dutch exhibitors. We look forward to welcoming you at our stand in Hall 13, D11, where our new products and the entire FLOOR range can be seen.

To move heaven and earth to help our customers transform their outdoor spaces into the living spaces of their dreams. We have achieved this success by building on solid foundations. Since its establishment in Liege, our family company has never hesitated to reach out and now has 25 partners in more than 50 countries. Trust is one of our core values, and is reinforced during each mission: by taking time to listen to the client and rolling out each project with enthusiasm. Visit us in Hall 12 Booth H25.

We would like to spare just a few words to speak about our company, our great passion for wood that has been handed down through so many generations. Our deeply-rooted history consists of more than 150 years of experience in this sector, yet this adventure did not begin with timber, but with the whip handles made from “huckberry”, a particularly elastic and long- lasting tree that grows spontaneously on rocky land. The motivation towards innovation blended with the fundamental element of the manual dexterity of the craftsmen during the processing and finishing stages as well as our productive flexibility are our strong points that allow us to be appreciated worldwide and these are the ingredients needed in order to create unique and unmistakable projects. Today, Bassano Parquet presents a rich catalogue with 16 types of wood that enhance our collections with the most exclusive painted, oiled, brushed, hand- scraped and heat-treated finishes. Monolite (finish: Ematite) Varnished aged oak: keywords of our new Monolite collection. Here in all the charm of the Oak Ematite finish. BerryAlloc BerryAlloc Kick Start 2018 with a Revolutionary New Product Range In a bold move, designed to take the industry by storm, BerryAlloc has re-designed and re-engineered their entire product range for 2018, with a huge number of new, high end designs intended

to make their laminates virtually indistinguishable from a traditional hard wood floor. Having invested massively in new technology, BerryAlloc can now scan real timbers and reproduce them authentically, with an extra deep emboss that makes them look just like the real thing. To add the finishing touch, they have given their popular MatLook finish a massive new makeover. XtraMatt, as it is now called, is a deep high quality finish which is easy on the eye and adds a luxurious feel to their elegant and stylish designs. The most eye-catching of the new designs unique to BerryAlloc are : Cracked Oak, which looks like naturally dried timber planking and Barn Wood, which has a beautiful New England feel. Retro Chic allows you to create a vintage inspired interior with "worn tile" floors and The Gyant is available in extra-long planks, which make it perfect for hallways and corridors as well as creating a sense of space and grandeur in larger living areas. A herringbone floor is back in fashion, so their new Chateau Collection is sure to prove hugely popular. Thanks to its unique laying system, it can be put down in the traditional herringbone pattern or used to create a more edgy geometric design. As well as overhauling their designs, BerryAlloc have taken the opportunity to update their technical specifications, creating a more efficient range of popular sized components. HydroPlus, their industry leading waterproofing system, will also be applied to more collections, including floors with grooves, allowing customers to choose from a far wider range of plank dimensions, designs and finishes for all rooms, even their kitchen and bathroom. Cassandra Pyck, Product Manager at BerryAlloc said "This is a huge step forward for BerryAlloc, not only will it allow us to provide retailers with a unique product range, it will help us to become the "must stock"

Flamingo Parket Flamingo Parket has modernised all its machinery Flamingo Parket will be exhibiting again at the next Domotex Hannover. Over the past year, the company has invested heavily in machinery, not only to increase production capacity, but also and especially to raise the quality to an even higher level. Investments will have been completed in the spring. This will enable Flamingo Parket to perfect the fit of twin planks to such an extent that even floors without a bevelled edge will not show a hint of difference in height between different planks. As well as the present very strict quality demands,

Flamingo Parket also wants to stress its great flexibility. For example, they can supply widths from 14 to 30cm and thicknesses of 12, 16, and 18mm. All these products can be supplied with a sandpapered, planed, or brushed surface. They will also be parading to the full the Raftwood floors, the show pony of Flamingo Parket. Raftwood is produced from oak railway sleepers. The top layers which emerge are pressed onto waterproof glued birch multiplex. The sections are then processed in a special manner. The special aspect of this product is that it is still affordable and that there are no comparable products on the market. It looks like a magnificent old wooden floor, but it has the stability of a composite section. Visit them in Hall 13, Stand C90.

Lamett Lamett launches new product range ParquetVinyl

With ParquetVinyl, Lamett launches a new floor that combines all the benefits of wood, laminate and vinyl. Although Lamett demonstrates a great technical know-how, it took 24 months to adjust and improve this new flooring. ParquetVinyl looks like real wood, but enjoys the benefits of vinyl, namely the ease of maintenance and water resistance. Moreover, this floor overcomes the limitations of a traditional vinyl flooring thanks to its ultrastrong and rigid carrier, transparent wear layer and excellent matt PU top layer. Thanks to the rigid carrier, ParquetVinyl will not deform at high temperatures, and therefore is perfectly suitable to install in verandas. The simple click system provides for fast and easy installation. “Being active in the floor coverings industry for 23 years now, I’ve never had the chance to bring such a good product in such ideal circumstances into the market!”, according to Bruno Descamps, Managing Director of Lamett. Osmo Colour diversity, flexible application DOMOTEX 2018: Osmo presents their competencies in wood finishing From 12 to 15 January 2018, DOMOTEX in Hannover has its doors open for visitors. There, Osmo Holz und Color GmbH & Co. KG will present their entire portfolio of wood finishing systems. As stronger partners for the industry and tradesman, Osmo offers finish systems that reliably protect flooring and furniture exposed to high wear, for example in commercial properties, and make fast and simple applications possible. Thus, Polyx®-Oil Express has received praise for its compelling economic benefits: it enables two coats in one day, and neither primer nor intermediate sanding is needed. For the do-it-yourself market, simple applications and flexible methods are important. Also in this area, Osmo offers a wide choice: regardless of whether with Polyx®-Oil Original or one of seven coloured variations, Wood Wax Finish or Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin, hardly any limits are set on the individual design of flooring and furniture surfaces. For all oil-and-wax-based wood finishes from Osmo, the same applies: they protect wood from inside out, form a microporous surface and are, despite this, still liquid-resistant. All products in the Osmo range are geared towards each other, and therefore, the consumer can get everything necessary for a professional wood surface treatment from one source. Decruy (BE)

DECRUY PRODUCES MULTIFUNCTIONAL STAIR AND FLOOR PROFILES FROM LVT Decruy NV from Houthulst (Belgium) is a reputable supplier for the international flooring, furniture, and DIY industries. In recent years, the firm has specialised in producing floor profiles from DPL and LVT floor slabs and floor plates. Frederik Decruy comments, ‘We’ve seen a significant shift from encased profiles to profiles made from the floor plates themselves, especially for profiles where scratch-resistance is a must, such as a transition profile for instance. Such profiles are at the same level as the floor, so a matching colour is essential. Since we get the profiles from the floor panels themselves, the profiles have both the same colour and the same scratch-resistance as the floor.’

air cavities, bias, burrow/snap, but in order to make a Z-staircase we had to go beyond traditional click systems. All together, five models were reviewed before the definitive version was ready. This product perfectly embodies the Decruy corporate philosophy, namely to develop, if necessary together with the client, hightech finish products and accessories for the floor covering, DIY, and furniture sectors. We are very proud of this product. Obviously, we have licensed this beautiful development in partnership with Floorify.’

Multifunctional profile from LVT and DPL The Decruy collection already included a skirting board, a reducer, an end profile, a transition profile, and an adhesive skirting board from LVT and DPL. ‘Developments progress constantly, so this year we’ve developed another multifunctional profile from LVT. A handy profile which, without any extra accessories, can be transformed into an end profile, a transition profile, or a reducer.’

Possibility to keep slabs and end products in stock Together with some people from Floorify, Decruy has developed a multifunctional stair profile from LVT which you can use to create a straight or a Z-staircase. ‘This is the first development in which just about all departments of the firm have had to work so intensively. We set a high standard from the very beginning. The product is a mix of knowledge and technology originating from the skirting board, profile, and flat laminate departments. In particular, the click system incorporated into this product is outstanding. After all, we had to create a click system in which two panels fitted together seamlessly to form a straight staircase, but also a Z-staircase when the vertical panel turned a further 15 degrees. The click system includes well known techniques such as

Early in 2017, the Decruy NV transport department set up a warehousing and picking service. This gives clients the opportunity to store both raw materials and finished products at Decruy. This service gives European importers the opportunity to store slabs with us so that we can make skirting boards and profiles from them quickly and easily. And so, we can offer these people true matching skirting boards and profiles with their LVT floors to give them a completely matching floor concept.’ For more information visit us on www.decruy.be

PARQUET IN THE BATHROOM? A SHIP DECK DESIGN IS EVEN POSSIBLE IN THE SHOWER

Photo – Design Parquet

If we state that lots of technological innovations have brought fitting parquet, wooden floors, and wood-like floor coverings within the reach of more and more ‘people’, this obviously applies to a much lesser extent when it comes to the real ‘specialities’. An original and traditionally fitted ship deck parquet is undoubtedly such a ‘speciality’ which surely requires lots of professional expertise? Yet we see here, too, how manufacturers supply alternatives which yield a comparable visual result, but with fewer technical twists.

trained floor fitters and that’s no surprise. Just about all European countries have a rich tradition in wooden floors, parquet, and furniture works. The latter has even enjoyed golden ages in which manual woodcarving has thrived in some areas. Those traditions have been handed down, if not from father to son then certainly from ‘patron’ to apprentices. It’s certainly true that there are techniques nowadays for fitting wooden floors (or semi-wooden floors) without all that professional expertise. Yet at the same time interest in and respect for traditional parquet are booming sumptuously. The ‘profession’ goes on.

the south of France? Surely not necessarily a Frenchman? Perhaps a German, Belgian, or Pole? Who succumbs to the temptation to buy a sublime penthouse on the promenade of the marina in Split? Surely not necessarily a Croat? Those in need of renovation or restoration work on their second (or third) residence abroad often call upon the services of a professional from ‘home’. Someone whom they know and trust. It’s the same with fitting a new parquet floor or working on an existing one.

And those yachts … Let’s stay in some exotic foreign places for a while. Let’s go perhaps to those fashionable seaside resorts also with marinas on the Mediterranean Sea. Cannes, Nice, or Saint-Tropez, the Côte d’Azur isn’t so very far away. There you will see them moored: a wealth of ‘pleasure boats’, most of which aren’t necessarily owned by locals. It is here that we discover what this article is really about, namely smartly designed and tendered ship decks in wood, with or without inserted designs or geometrical figures. You don’t necessarily have to look at giant vessels to see them; some ‘more average’ 13m yachts also have the deck designed in ‘ship deck pattern’, usually in teak and fitted with rubber.

Two specialists: BJ Parket

They do exist, but they are a rare breed; we’re talking about those parquet floor fitters who are called by their clients to the south to fit or repair a ship deck. Yet they all know about it! Not so much from the world of yachts, but simply in contemporary interior construction where this pattern is increasingly in demand. People generally appreciate the ship deck pattern nowadays for its rigid and consistent look. The mostly narrow and long floorboards, in the original ship deck type, are fitted alternately with a silicone layer as a joint. The whole structure has a slender appearance, yet it looks modern and classic at the same time. The ship deck floor is one of those rare floors where decoration and technical performance go hand in hand. After all, the ship deck technique brings wood into damp rooms, including the shower cabin. Yet a ship deck floor is also pure design, the ultimate exclusiveness in a rigid and modern interior. It goes without saying that the design of such a floor (or wall) requires some technical care and, above all, the right products.

BJ Parket takes orders for these floors on a regular basis for bathrooms, but the company certainly does not believe that they are a trend, but certainly a constant feature .The fact that there is more filling work makes the fitting more expensive than that of a traditional parquet floor. They don’t supply perfectly watertight floors in ship deck which are ready for Photo BJ Parket / Photo Wim Van Vynckt fitting. What we can say for sure is that these floors have to be fitted by an experienced specialist. Anyone who is capable of fitting only pre-finished, engineered parquet should not even try to fit these floors. A big advantage of ship deck is that it is a completely waterproof floor. These floors are available in both solid wood and multi-layer. The most important wood sort is teak or acapou.

Various designs

Design Parquet

Teak is the popular choice for a ship deck floor and this is also the case in ship construction; this has got everything to do with the behaviour of teak towards damp, its hardness, and its relative resistance to wood rot. Teak is still the perfect type of wood for fitting a ship deck floor in the bathroom or against shower walls. For designs in living rooms there are several possible types of wood, but architects usually opt for light types in order to highlight the contrast with the dark joint.

For Design Parquet ship deck is still in fashion, especially fittings with an integrated joint. Since the connecting strip is integrated, as with Navylam+ floors, these floors are no more expensive to fit than other floors. Design Parquet offers seven wood sorts: acacia, iroko, wenge, doussie, teak, mtentye, and afrormosia. For correct fitting floor fitters should follow the maker’s instructions. Ship deck parquet is a warm and pleasant floor which is easy to maintain. At Design Parquet they use 100% solid wood.

From the living room to the bathroom

Complete craft work There are several types of floor covering in ship deck pattern. With the most ‘traditional’ method, the ship deck is designed integrally on the site. With this type the floor consists of solid wood or multi-layer strips which are glued to the substrate at regular intervals from each other; after that, the joint is sprayed with a flexible filler and then sandpapered, just like any other wooden floor. With this type the fitting is somewhat more expensive precisely because of the extra work which the joint involves. In a number of designs the flexible joint is replaced by a border in a contrasting type of wood.

The manufacturer contributes This is for those who want everything done somewhat faster and more easily. Both in solid wood and multi-layer we find traders who offer a

36

ship deck floor with an integrated joint. This obviously eliminates the extra work for the joint and results in a lower cost price. The fitting also requires no extra expertise. These floors are also fitted in the classical manners: fully glued, floating with a click system, or nailed. And then there was, yes, laminate! After all, if a fitting pattern proves popular, the laminate manufacturers are waiting in the wings to include it in their range of decors. With ship deck floors in laminate the joint is usually designed with a rubber strip or the pattern is included in the decor itself. The ends must definitely be sealed, certainly for applications in damp rooms.

Subfloors : part III

SUBFLOORS BENEFIT FROM THE SUCCESS OF DESIGN FLOORS THE NEED FOR A SUBFLOOR WITH FLEXIBLE FLOORS IS LOGICAL

Photo – Plinten&Profielen Centrale

Photo – Plinten&Profielen Centrale

Damp resistance, smoothing, sound insulation, anti-slip, and deployment with floor heating are ‘possible’ demands which a subfloor might have to meet. Which of those series of demands are made depends largely on the type of floor and, obviously, the condition of the substrate. Subfloors which are suitable for flexible floors are obviously doing well since design floors themselves are enjoying a ‘boom’. Subfloors for flexible floors differ in some areas from those for ‘hard’ floors.

and may combine different objectives: damp screen, levelling, sound insulation, etc. For example, we find a subfloor made from a thick PE foil with a perforated (HD) layer of foam, which provides a great levelling capacity, together with high impact sound reduction and, thanks to the extremely low heat resistance (Rm), it is ideal for fitting with floor heating. Other combinations of ‘performances’ are obviously frequently available.

Types of subfloors

For some years now, we’ve been seeing the emergence of technological subfloors equipped with one or two self-adhesive layers. These subfloors are actually sophisticated fitting systems which ensure easy and speedy fitting and at the same time greatly help to improve acoustic comfort. In some respects the self-adhesive layer replaces glue and ensures that the subfloor is part of the same mass.

There are various ways of classifying subfloors. All subfloors have one thing in common with each other, whether they are deployed for floating or glued fitting or for hard or flexible floor coverings: They are invisible once the floor covering has been fitted. And so, the differences in terms of types of subfloors relate exclusively to functional and technical aspects.

Technical subfloors Subfloor plates are usually a composition of different (pressed) materials. For example, we see compositions of cork grains (granules) with some or other synthetic or compositions of certain material granules with cement products. A striking phenomenon is that wood is emerging even in these subfloors in certain forms such as wood fibres or sawdust. Some of those subfloor plates are offered with tongue and groove. They are easy to slide into each other and are fitted ‘staggered’ or ‘half-brick’. In most cases, and once again depending on the technical possibilities and expectations, a second layer is fitted onto the first layer in cross bond. Several of those subfloors can be deployed for both floating and glued fitting.

Subfloors in rolls The market offers various subfloors in rolls for floating fitting. The materials from which these subfloors are produced determine the properties

Self-adhesive subfloors

For flexible floor coverings With flexible floor coverings the density of the subfloor plays a crucial part. Indeed, the extent to which unevenness in the substrate becomes visible in the finished floor varies partly due to the hardness or density of the floor. Small unevenness in the screed will generally not be visible with laminate or parquet. In those cases a flexible subfloor with or without an integrated damp screen can suffice. However, with flexible floor coverings that small unevenness has to be eliminated by a harder subfloor. The rule stipulates that with a pressure of 300Kpa the subfloor may not be pressed in further than 0.3mm. Therefore, it is no surprise that the focus is immediately on subfloors in panel form. One of the most well known subfloor specialists has different types of glued subfloor plates. A perfect combination for subfloors in the case of a flexible end floor is a soft bottom plate and a hard top plate. In addition, some producers promote a subfloor which certainly appears in a roll, but which nevertheless offers a sufficiently high density for fitting flexible floor coverings. In a number of cases these subfloors have an integrated damp screen.

Sanding machines : part III

EDGE SANDERS PUT A CROWN ON THE WORK THEY CARRY ON WHERE OTHER SANDERS GIVE UP We can hardly imagine clambering up a staircase with an 80kg belt sander to sandpaper staircase steps. Even the indispensable rotary disc sanders for finer sandpapering have difficulty reaching into corners. These rotary sanders also weigh about 30kg. Edge and stair sanders weigh between 8 and 13kg. And so, these edge and stair sanders are specially designed for sandpapering in places where other sanders give up. In other words, these machines all complement each other.

Complementary machines Belt sanders and rotary disc sanders have a permanent place in the floor fitter’s ‘arsenal’. They complement each other in many respects. Actually, we can compare their complementary nature to that of the various lawn mowers at the disposal of professional gardeners. For more extensive lawns they use the sit mower, the machine for heavy work. They also have a (self-driving) manual lawn mower for any flowerbeds which the sit mower cannot reach. Then there are the edges. They are treated with a forest mower or a strimmer. After all, the diameter of the lawn mower casing is bigger than the reach of the blades. That’s exactly why it is impossible to mow against the sides using a standard lawn mower. It’s the same story when it comes to parquet sanding machines. Edge and stair sanders are specially designed for sandpapering in places which are hard or even impossible to reach with heavier machines. Those places include, for instance, the zones under radiators, the strip along walls, corners, and, something now increasingly common in the floor fitter’s range, stairs. Edge sanders are the only solution here. They enable you to sandpaper right up to the wall.

Shorter sanding arm Most edge sanders have either an optional or standard extension nose piece, which extends the working depth under radiators, for instance, by up to 35cm with some makes. Most manufacturers offer two different sanding arms, namely a short one and a long one. The lengths vary somewhat between the different makes, but, in the last few years, we have seen the emergence of more really short arms of 110 to 150mm as compared to the normal average length of 250 to 300mm. Obviously, some things are related to a historical development with regard to radiators. In modern interiors wide radiators have had to make way for flat design radiators. The machines are designed in such a way that they are extremely versatile and are usually easy to operate, even for inexperienced workers. The diameter of the sanding disc varies according to the make but is usually 150 or 178mm. Edge sanders are designed in such a way that they can easily be deployed to sandpaper staircase stairs, for instance, using the addition of a Teflon sole-plate.

What’s on the market? Alvaket Removing thick coats of lacquer is a time-consuming and very tiring job, especially along the edges. With the easy to handle GECKO-FLEX,

3D Wooden walls = extra business for floor fitters

WALL CLADDING AFFECTS THE ROOM 3D SETS THE WALL ITSELF IN MOTION

Photo – HWZ International

Many architectural tricks have the power to create illusions. They play on the observer’s perception without this necessarily corresponding to the reality. Obviously, creating illusions plays on some of the ‘ features’ of a person. Indeed, our perception is affected not only by psychological incidental conditions, but also by some of the features and idiosyncrasies of our senses. 3D wall cladding can be an illusion which works its way into our minds, but it can perfectly well also be real.

Our senses We all know that human beings are an ingenious creation. We’re full of miraculous whims which enable us to do all that we do. For instance, our senses are full of clever devices.

Direction of the sound How do we know, for example, where a sound comes from? This is simply because our ears are located at a distance from each other. For example, if a source of sound occurs on our right side, that sound

40

Floor Forum International 92

enters our right ear before it enters the left ear. People use that difference in arrival times, also referred to as the phase of sound waves, to localise the source of a sound. This is defined using an English abbreviation ITD, which stands for interaural time difference. The difference in volume also plays a part. This difference is defined using another English abbreviation IID, which stands for interaural intensity difference. Sound from the right seems to be quieter in the left ear because the head in this situation acts as a sort of sound barrier.

Perspective It’s a similar picture with our ‘sight’. The human visual system deduces the distance of objects from a number of clues. These observations are integrated seamlessly into the image, which is observed with perspective. Observations can be divided up into three categories, namely observations with one eye (monocular), observations with two eyes (binocular), and observations through the motion or state of the eyes (oculomotor). Association, perspective, and shadow are monocular factors. A major binocular factor is binocular disparity. Our eyes are a certain distance apart so that we see one object through two different

corners of the eyes. For objects more than 5m away, binocular disparity falls to zero, and thereby the resolution of the perspective falls with a greater distance.

Illusion or… Now that we are more familiar with some aspects of our visual perception, we can well imagine that certain images definitely give an impression of depth with no relief. Differences in colour can create depth or give the impression of the presence of a source of light. This is done constantly in painting. Another illustration: If we take certain images, which we know in reality are always of identical size, and put them next to each other in different sizes, we ‘think’ that the bigger image is closer to us than the smaller one, something which is obviously not the case on a level surface. This technique has been used in the interior for many years, for instance in wallpaper design. It can be deployed perfectly for a complete wooden wall provided that we use different types of wood or colours. That, too, was done centuries ago, for instance, with the Versailles floors in the palace with the same name. After all, the Versailles panel looks like diagonal interweaving, whereas it isn’t like that at all.

… the real thing Obviously, we can also create genuine relief. Wooden floorboards which are fitted on the wall, just like strip parquet and in scores of possible bonds and patterns, take on a three-dimensional shape if the strips have different dimensions and thicknesses. Any imaginable fitting pattern is possible. This possibility also appears in panel form, but floor fitters who enjoy a challenge could just as easily fit them on the client’s premises. The different thicknesses obviously don’t make it any easier as regards finish and sandpapering. Attractive mosaic effects can also be created with panels finished in waste wood (parquet production or something else).

Conclusion Wood on the wall? Why not? It also means yet another extension to floor fitters’ field of work since they now have to take care of the wall cladding as well as the floor covering.

What’s on the market ? HWZ International Wooden panels for walls are back in fashion. Indeed, the combination of modern interiors and wood is much coveted. They have noticed a growing demand at HWZ International. They’ve also seen a strong trend towards 3D designs, not only printed but also real 3D. HWZ presents that under the name INDO. The leading wood sorts are teak, rubber wood, and birch. The wood may originate from plantations or may be recycled wood. At HWZ International they are strong believers in giving the raw materials a ‘second life’. In teak, in particular, wood is recycled from old products such as doors. The wall sections are between 10 and 20mm thick with a view to 3D designs. INDO is completely hand-made. The sections are brushed by hand and can be coloured with ecological products. www.hwzi.ch + 41 (0) 58 470 66 03

La Fabrique de Parquet Traditional panelling is rather outmoded nowadays, but interest in wood on the wall has stirred up demand again. Wooden wall cladding is now a new decoration method. Its use has also evolved. This is usually applied only locally and minimally. Nevertheless, La Fabrique de Parquet does also have projects with bigger wall surfaces. Panelling has grown into ‘decorative wall strips’. Rough designs are very much coveted here. The brushed version has now brought some more structure. Various lengths and widths and 3D effects make it extremely vivid. Amongst other things, La Fabrique de Parquet presents Stickwood, a wall cladding with solid wood, but thinner and with self-adhesive sections. The wall strips are 3mm thick. The finishes range from raw to all oils and lacquers used for parquet.

Meister A noticeable trend in the interior sector is that more and more designers are fitting warm and authentic materials on the wall. In structured parquet in particular they have noticed here a clear increase in parquet floors fitted on the wall. MEISTER has adeptly taken advantage of this and from now on has made it possible to fit all 13mm thick MEISTER parquet floors on the wall. This is possible thanks to an extremely handy rail system with clips, which permits easy assembly. Allowing the parquet to run over to the wall not only creates more warmth in the home, but also gives your home certain highlights, which ensure a cosy and pleasant sphere.

Vetedy Vetedy presents its ‘techniclic®’ wall in 3D! With its invisible fastening, Vetedy continues to do more than just go along with the latest trends. It has also introduced a 3D creation, which has been achieved with the help of its ‘techniclic®’ system and developed by the Vetedy development team. It is now possible to play with thicknesses to make a wall literally in three dimensions, whilst retaining the high manufacturing quality. Thanks to their choice in widths and lengths, there is more scope for design options and you can create a unique interior. This 3D wall is available in padauk. The wall can be fitted with optional led tablets to create an ultra design effect.

Producers of substrate levellers

GOOD PREPARATION IS HALF THE JOB LEVELLING IS SIMPLY ESSENTIAL IN MANY CASES

Photo – Pallmann

It goes without saying that the substrate onto which we’re going to fit a floor covering has to be perfectly level. It also follows logically that the extent of that ‘perfection’ increases with the extent to which the floor covering becomes more flexible and thinner. For that matter, that principle is no different for wall claddings. If we’re going to paint a wall, there will be a greater need to fill and refine or sandpaper the bare wall than with wallpaper, for instance. Any unevenness will always be visible through a thin and flexible covering. Depending on the fitting method (floating/glued) and the type of floor, levelling can be a must.

The screed as ‘starting point’ What is a good screed? When is a screed suitable for glueing a floor onto it? In the instructions with most glues we almost always read that the first ‘commandment’ is as follows: ‘The floor must be clean and free of grease and dust.’ Obviously, that’s a basic condition, but certainly not the only one.

What does the screed undergo? We all know that wood swells and shrinks with the surrounding atmospheric conditions. If there is a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, wood absorbs damp from the air and starts to swell. On the other hand, it will release damp and start to shrink as the humidity decreases.

Modern glue technology takes account of those wood movements. That has lead to an extensive range of ‘flexible’ types of glue, which are designed specially for wooden floors and can cope with wood movements with no problem at all. All those movements exert force on the screed in various ways and in different directions (vertically and horizontally). When parquet is glued fully onto a cement screed, the screed has to be capable of withstanding those forces. In other words, whilst the glue ‘moves’ with those forces, the screed has to ‘withstand’ them.

What is a good screed? A screed is basically a mix of sand and cement. A solid and serviceable screed has to be prepared using the correct dose. A good mix is usually 300 to 320kg of cement per m³ of sand. If you don’t add enough cement to the sand, the screed will never be strong enough and will usually stay powdery. Not a good basis for glueing, that’s for sure. The mix (dose) of a screed determines whether it will meet the requirements needed for glueing. For example, a good screed is expected to have compressive strength of at least 8N/mm². Other important requirements are that the screed must be mixed perfectly. That is important for its porosity. After all, the porosity of a subfloor (covering floor) has to be the same everywhere in order to obtain good adhesion for glueing. If the porosity isn’t uniform, there is a risk of the screed sucking water out of the glue at the most porous points. As a result, you don’t get the same drying process in all places.

Producers of substrate levellers

The importance of a primer Depending on the previous floor covering and the way in which it has been fitted, we can say that with renovation the porosity of the screed seldom has to be uniform. If we have removed the previous floor covering, we often still have to remove adhesive residue, and it becomes clear at once that this residue will be more stubborn in some places than in others. Since that adhesive residue hasn’t penetrated into the screed in the same way everywhere, you get places with greater or less porosity. It is perfectly possible to remove differences in the porosity with a primer. The primers on the market are easy to apply and ensure that the absorbent capacity of the screed is levelled so that later the glue or, firstly, the levelling agent can adhere firmly everywhere. Using a primer to improve a powdery screed is most certainly not recommended. There are other reinforcement products for that purpose. If the screed doesn’t have the strength required to cope with the forces of wood and glue, a screed strengthener is deployed.

And then we level We’ve already said that flexible and hard floor coverings are not subjected entirely to the same demands in terms of evenness. What about the products? Some makers promote special products, whilst others recommend the same levellers as used for parquet. Everyone agrees on one thing: With flexible floor coverings there is a greater need for a perfectly level screed than with parquet or laminate, for instance. A number of requirements apply to all levelling agents. The products are highly fluid so that they spread out evenly everywhere. However, due to the rapid setting it is advisable to give that self-levelling character a little assistance by using a spatula or a mop. And so, it is best never to make too much leveller, and certainly no more than you can spread in 15 to 20 minutes. The time needed to glue the leveller varies from 2 to 30 hours. That is usually also the time needed to apply a second coat of leveller if you have to remove a greater difference in levels. Most levelling agents have a filling capacity of 1-10mm per coat. With several coats it will be necessary with some brands to sprinkle with quartz sand between coats. Some surfaces can be walked on within one hour of the fitting, whilst others need to be left for up to three hours.

An overview Adesiv Adesiv promotes the cement-based leveller Pavilast R for levelling uneven floors. This is done in line with the following fitting guidelines. Always check the substrate moisture with the right instruments. The substrate must not contain any moisture, must be compact, and must be free of loose elements such as slaked lime, dust, oils, or wax. Pour the powder (25kg) into a clean bucket of water (6.5kg), which is at room temperature. Mix with the electric mixer until you have a uniform paste with no lumps and in a thickness which can be spread. Leave the resulting paste to stand for a few minutes before applying it using the correct smooth stainless steel spatula (American). Always check the covering floor moisture before applying the paste. The moisture level

44

Floor Forum International 92

must be less than 2% (<0.5% for anhydrite). The room temperature should be between 15 and 25°C, and relative humidity no higher than 75%. Adesiv also presents Adecem Fiber, a self-levelling and fibre-reinforced leveller.

Basf/ Thomsit All floors have different properties. And so, this also means that the desired levelling agent also has to suit those properties. It is therefore important to know in advance what sort of floor is going to be fitted onto it. A levelling agent can then be chosen on that basis. A primer is necessary before levelling in order to bind the dust and to raise the absorbent effect of the subfloor. Before glueing onto the levelled floor, it is not necessary in most cases to use a primer. For universal use on absorbent and non-absorbent substrates there is the R766 Multi-Purpose Primer. The R766 Multi-Purpose Primer can be used in concentrated or diluted form. This product is ideal for renovation due to its rapid drying. Henkel has an extensive range of levelling agents all possible applications: cementbound in various layer thicknesses, for anhydrite, for wooden floors, industrial floors, mosaic subfloors, specially for renovation, or for big differences in levels. As their best-seller in the field of levelling agents, Thomsit promotes the Thomsit XXL Power.

Bostik The most important reason for levelling is to make the substrate flat enough. The screed has to meet at least the following criteria: permanently dry (with no danger of rising damp) - clean – no cracks – sufficiently compression resistant and tensile. The choice of the leveller depends on the substrate and the usage of the floor afterwards and less so the type of floor covering. Depending on the application, you opt for ‘fibre-reinforced’ for levelling wooden substrates, ‘fast-drying’ if the job needs to be finished the same day, or ‘increased compressive strength’ if used as a top coat. A primer is almost always necessary. The function of the primer is to reduce the porosity of the substrate, as an adhesion bridge with the leveller and the primer you avoid the formation of air craters which can be ‘drawn’ afterwards in, for example, thin uniform PVC floor covering. As a standard, it is possible to glue onto a leveller the day afterwards (after sandpapering) in thicknesses of up to a maximum of 10mm. With fast-drying levellers that can still be done on the same day, but that applies only for carpet or PVC. For parquet and linoleum Bostik recommends that you don’t glue onto fast-drying levellers until at least 24 hours later. The best-seller here is Niboplan DIRECT. This is a C50 - F10 leveller (pressure resistance > 50N/mm² and it can therefore cope with high loads afterwards – This product can be used as an industrial floor (top coat).

Devomat/PCI Devomat believes that the aim of levelling is to make the screed floor flat and rigid. Applying a levelling paste creates a flat floor surface. Levelling might be necessary, for instance, after the removal of an existing floor covering where the screed is damaged or with the installation of floor heating pipes. Once the surface has been levelled, it is then possible to fit tiles, parquet, laminate, or a light floor covering (e.g. linoleum, vinyl, carpet, or cork) with no problem at all. The suitability of a leveller depends partly on the substrate e.g. screed, concrete, anhydrite, or wood. The finish (e.g. carpet, parquet, ceramic tiles, or an epoxy floor) also determines which levelling agent is suitable. Applying the correct primer to the screed will ensure that the levelling agent will spread better and set in the correct manner. This is very important when fitting light floor coverings such as cork, vinyl, linoleum, carpet, or PVC. Devomat presents various levelling agents under the name PCI Periplan. PCI Periplan Extra contains fibres and is reinforced with polymer so that the adhesion to the substrate is perfect and any tensions are absorbed. This PCI Periplan Extra is perfect for use on a tile floor and/or a wooden floor. However, it can also be applied, of course, to a traditional screed floor.

F.Ball Levelling agents differ in drying time, strength, moisture resistance, flexibility, and their compatibility with various types of subfloor. Local conditions and the chosen floor covering determine which properties are necessary in a leveller. A strong leveller has to be chosen for high-traffic rooms or rooms where trolleys and such like on wheels are used. Stopgap 300HD offers high compressive strength and is ideally suited to high-traffic floors. On flexible subfloors such as those of wood or steel you need a leveller with great flexibility to cope with the natural movements in the subfloor. Stopgap 700 Superflex is enriched with fibres for improved flexibility and keeps the leveller intact. Possible cracks caused by movement in the subfloor are thereby invisible through the floor covering. A traditional cement-bound leveller is not suitable for calcium sulphate subfloors because it can cause a chemical reaction with harmful effects. A gypsum-bound leveller such as Stopgap 1100 Gypsum is recommended for maximum compatibility. Stopgap Fast-Track 30 is one of the most popular products at F. Ball due to its rapid properties and strong structure. Stopgap Fast-Track 30 is the ideal leveller for floors which have to be used again within a short space of time (a situation which floor professionals often face). Rooms such as corridors, shops, and floors in public buildings have to be ready for use again as soon as possible in order to limit any inconvenience.

Lecol Lecol believes that for flexible floor coverings it is absolutely essential that the subfloor is completely flat. Otherwise any unevenness at

Visit www.floor-forum.com

all is visible. For Lecol the Wakol Z615, a leveller which is deployed for parquet and wooden floors, is absolutely ideal. However, Lecol also has some other qualities which can be used, for instance, for a PVC floor: Wakol A620, Wakol Z635, Wakol Z640, Wakol Z645, Wakol Z670, Wakol Z680, and Wakol Z715. The type of substrate is obviously important in making the right choice (e.g. anhydrite, sand-cement, tiles, or wood). All those levellers are suitable for Lecol glues and are self-levelling so that flat substrates are guaranteed. The basic ingredient is cement. It is normally possible to fit parquet the day after, but Lecol also offers a leveller which dries within a few hours. The best-seller in this field is the Wakol Z615; this is dust-free and flows very well (it has the best flow properties available on the market!).

Pallmann There are lots of reasons for levelling a subfloor before fitting a floor. It can be necessary for the quality of the subfloor or, for instance, to compensate for differences in height and obtain greater smoothness or other technical features. The type of levelling agent depends on the covering floor material and the type of floor. For example, levelling agents can be based on cement or gypsum, for instance. In many cases a primer will be necessary as an intermediate step or, for instance, to obtain a consistent porosity. The self-levelling leveller from Pallmann is the Pallmann P25.

Tover In its range for substrate preparation in interior, Tover offers a self-leveling compound full of advantages: Rockfloor F10. Its main characteristics are a long leveling time, a thickness of application up to 10 mm by coat and the possibility to lay the wooden floor only after 24 hours. Fiber-reinforced, it is particularly strong and its rough surface improves the adhesion of glues. It is perfectly suitable on under-heating systems. In order to improve the adhesion between the sub-floor to be leveled and the self-leveling compound it is recommended to apply the adhesion promoter Primer C4. For resilient floorings support preparation indoor and outdoor, the mineral adhesive mortar Rasofloor 5 can be used to even out the surface with a thickness up to 5 mm per coat. It improves the application and adhesion of glues on the sub-floor.

Producers of ecological adhesives

GLUES WITH A LIMITED ‘FOOTPRINT’ ECOLOGICAL CONSTRUCTION IS REGULATED AT ALL LEVELS We often hear people say that we have to opt for products, systems, and activities with the lowest possible ecological footprint. Yet what does that actually mean? On the web site Belgium.be we read the following: ‘The ecological footprint is the estimated surface area which a person or a group of people would need to produce what is consumed and to absorb what is thrown away. It is expressed in hectares. One hectare corresponds to a surface area of 10,000m².’ Lots of building products have an influence on our environment which is sometimes ongoing. Glues certainly come into that category. That product group, too, is strictly regulated.

What does glue do? Glue can bind objects together by creating a reaction ‘somewhere’ between different ingredients in the glue itself or between the glue and an ‘external’ ingredient. And so, the glueing process is the result of different adhesion mechanisms. A physical adhesive reaction is when there is no chemical reaction at all. For example, the ‘disappearance’ of a solvent from the glue through evaporation is a physical reaction. The adhesion can also be created by allowing warm glue to cool off. That, too, is a strictly physical reaction, as is melting two components with so called melting glues. Chemical adhesive reactions are created when certain components cause a chemical reaction when they come into contact with each other. Obviously, there are various reactions here and therefore also various glues. With dual-component glues a chemical reaction takes place as the components join together. However, the reaction can only take place if the glue ingredients come into contact with damp in the atmosphere. Strictly speaking, you can say the impact of glues on the environment and public health is linked strongly to the ingredients used. One of the main ways of reducing the impact of chemical products on the environment is to reduce emission values i.e. the extent to which these products emit Volatile Organic Compounds during the production and before and after they are used.

VOC legislation Link between ventilation and VOC A fairly new feature in the CE regulations is the attention given to VOC emissions, the emission of volatile organic compounds which can affect the healthy indoor climate of homes. The problem of VOC emissions has arisen only recently with our concern for construction which is both energy-saving and ecological. VOC is the generic term for a whole lot of substances present in all materials in our environment and which evaporate easily. Those substances themselves are not new, as they have always been around. Nowadays, however, since we want to prevent air from going in or outdoors in an uncontrolled manner during building or renovation, those VOCs stay in our homes much longer than in the past. For some of those substances (e.g. formaldehyde) it is known that they can have adverse effects on human health. Those VOCs can be emitted from certain varnishes, glues, or finish products. Therefore, it is essential to ventilate the room properly when fitting and finishing an item such as a floor covering (source: Lalegno.be).

Floor Forum International 92

Division of emission behaviour The emission behaviour of building products is divided into EMICODES: EMICODE EC 1 means ‘very low emissions’, EMICODE EC 2 means ‘low emissions’, and EMICODE EC 3 means ‘higher emissions’. The division on the basis of EMICODES is based on recording data and specific division criteria measured after a specified test method. Since the concept of ‘very low emissions’ is neither standardised nor specified in and of itself, the EMICODE system merely offers a mandatory basis for the assessment and choice of products for floor fitters.

Emission values In the context of the Construction Products Regulation emission values have been lowered time and again. The ‘new’ European emission standards have been in force for some time which, amongst other things, stipulate that after 28 days the emission level of the total volatile organic compounds (TVOS) all together may not exceed 1,000µg/ m³ and the total content of semi-organic compounds (TSVOS) may not even exceed 100µg/m³. The share of CMR substances from categories 1A and 1B may not exceed 1µg/m³. CMR substances are carcinogenic (they cause cancer), mutagenic (causing changes in hereditary features), or toxic for reproduction (harmful for reproduction or the offspring).

Silane glues are doing well MS polymer and silane glues are two of the glues which are doing well here. We mention this merely as an illustration of an application of the emission standards. Last year, Kaneka took some recordings of the Total Volatile Organic Compounds and the Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds. For the TVOC the verdict after 28 days was an emission of 6 microgrammes/m³ (permissible in Belgium and Germany = 1,000 microgrammes) and for the SVOC the emission result was 5 microgrammes/ m³ (permissible in Belgium and Germany = 100 microgrammes). Moreover, MS polymers do not contain any isocyanates, so, amongst other things, this prevents skin problems for the user. This means that they don’t leave any marks on the hands, but also that any residue can be removed easily from parquet. The latter point is obviously an important asset when glueing floors which have been finished in the factory.

From the sector Adesiv MS Gold Flex is a single-component silane glue specially developed for glueing all types of wooden floor coverings onto cement-bound covering floors or non-absorbent existing floors such as marble, ceramic tiles, or wood surfaces. This single-component glue is based entirely on MS technology. It guarantees

extremely good initial adhesion and glueing. This glue contains no isocyanates or amines. Moreover, it is solventless and generates very few VOC emissions.

Bostik Since the new Royal Decree on maximum emission values came into force for all floors and floor glues, all glues have been ‘ecological’ to some degree. This is true in so far as emission values measured after 28 days must be below strict maximum limits and this applies to a long list of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's). The leading ecological glue in the Bostik range is PARFIX ECO PLUS, an innovative and elastic parquet glue with excellent cross-linking and faster setting. It contains no softeners, reactive catalysts, or phthalates. Green Contact (contact glue for flexible floors) contains no solvents or phthalates. It is a contact glue for PVC skirting boards, raised skirting boards, profiles, stair nosings, pre-designed staircase steps, and floor coverings (PVC, cork, and rubber in lanes or tiles) on stairs, etc. Bostik Rolls (dry glues in rolls) is a specially reinforced sticky tape for specific uses, namely the renovation of floors, skirting boards, pre-designed staircase steps, shower systems in PVC, etc. These tapes are an ecological alternative to traditional glues; they are lighter in weight and produce less waste. Bostik Rolls contain no solvents or phthalates, they meet the very low VOC emission requirements of class A+ and EC1, and they can be used for LEED and BREEAM projects.

Chimiver Chimiver offers UNISIL an adhesive based on MS technology. UNISIL is a prepolymer based, single-component hydrocuring adhesive with a silanic termination. Recommended for gluing pre-finished wooden floor onto marble, grit, tiles, ceramic or marble-chip floor, etc. Also suitable for gluing wooden floor onto underfloor heating and cooling system. CERTIFICATES: EC1R; ATTESTATION CCAEnvironmentally Compatible Product (Certificate issued by Department BEST - Politecnico of Milan CCA Registration No. 20163); Sound Reduction (CSI Test Report No. 0056/DC/ACU/06); Heat conductivity (CSI Test Report No. 0020/DC/TTS/06). UNISIL can contribute to the achievement of QI CREDIT 4.1 according to the parameters of the GEV dated 03 March 2009, because it meets the certification LEED protocol (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

Emfi Emfi parquet has both PU glue and hybrid glues. Emfi regards its hybrid polymer glues as ecological. Emfi presents as an ecological glue, for instance, the Emfi Parquet Pro+, a parquet glue based on silanated

polymers. It is suitable for glueing all types of parquet. Thanks to lots of research and development, Emfi Parquet Pro+ complies with the strictest environmental standards. This glue contains no solvents, silicones, or isocyanates. It is suitable for glueing very wide oak floorboards. It adheres rapidly and is very easy to apply. Emfi Parquet Pro+ is a single-component glue. Furthermore, Emfi also presents the Pro Eco and the Emfimastic PS Parquet.

Lecol The term ecological relates to ‘the influence of something on the environment.’ For instance, ecological products don’t harm the environment or they can even help to improve it. In the parquet sector there are products which meet the required standards in full. As far as Lecol is concerned, an ‘ecological glue’ is a glue which is less harmful to public health and the environment. These glues do not contain solvents, they have low emissions, and they meet the standards of BREEAM and LEED. As for legislation in this area, there is the Reach legislation. Furthermore, in Germany there is also the EMI code, which is stipulated by the sector. The safety label means users can look up any health and safety measures to be taken. MS glues (Wakol MS230/260/290), emulsion glues (Wakol D1640), and PVC glue meet the BREEAM and LEED requirements, so we can call them ‘ecological’.

Rubio Monocoat Whether a glue is ecological or not depends on various factors. First of all, a glue can be ecological because it isn’t harmful to the user (floor fitter) or the people who will later occupy or spend time in the home/ company/public building. Furthermore, a parquet glue can also be developed intentionally with ecologically responsible raw materials. Rubio® Easy Bond parquet glue is an ecological glue for various reasons. One reason is the fact that Rubio® Easy Bond contains no softeners. Softeners are oily fluids added to synthetics to make them more flexible. Rubio® Easy Bond parquet glue contains no softeners, but it does have a high polymer content. That makes the glue more expensive, but also more durable with greater bonding strength. Since Rubio® Easy Bond contains no softeners, there is therefore also no migration, so the composition of the glue doesn’t change. This means you don’t need to fear for any damage to the finish layer later because there simply isn’t anything in the glue which can

migrate to the wood. Softeners have been under pressure for 20 years now due to their supposed adverse effects on the environment and public health. Moreover, the glue doesn’t contain any solvents, so it isn’t harmful to the environment. It meets all recognised standards and tests, including the ‘latest’ standard ISO 17178, which specifies the minimum requirements for a glue. It is a glue with just one component, so there is no waste and the buckets can be re-used.

today. STAUF products certified with a variety of eco-labels in the category health and the environment. EMICODE® is the most important and well-known classification system internationally for emission behaviour of installation materials, adhesives and construction products. The German GEV, the Association for the Control of Emissions in Products for Flooring Installation, Adhesives and Building Materials, for solvent-free, low emission products, awards this label. Products are random tested even after the label has awarded. This ensures that products always have the same high quality and that they offer the greatest possible safety and reliability where the quality of indoor air, health and safety, and eco-friendliness are concerned. Top Product: STAUF SMP-950 is a 100% silane based SMP wood flooring adhesive without any kind of migresives (no VOC, SVOC, VVOC) and therefore suitable for all sub floors and wood flooring types.

Tover

At Soudal they define an ecological glue, amongst other things, as ‘a glue which has no adverse effects on the life of organisms and their surrounds.’ Over the years, various eco-labels have been set up. Examples include the Emicode with the EC-1 Plus, Rakennustieto with the M1, the German Blue Angel label, and various others. These labels concentrate mainly on volatile organic compounds (VOC). There are also some international certificates for the designation of a durable building. Some examples of this are LEED and BREEAM. Major legislation in this respect is REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation & restriction of Chemical substances). This is a European Union regulation to provide better protection for human health and the environment against the risks posed by hazardous chemical substances. Packaging also plays a part in the ecological aspect since it is a part of the product. Moreover, at production level (energy/waste) it is possible to have a beneficial effect on the ecological footprint by organising the transport rationally. Soudal invests heavily in all those aspects. The Soudal range includes a very strong selection of hybrid parquet glues: MS-20 Plus, MS-30 Plus, and SMX-30 Plus. These are highly effective, have the EC-1 Plus label, and contain no solvents. Furthermore, the entire range of Soudal floor glues complies with the Belgian royal decree regarding emissions from floor covering products. Furthermore, Soudal also has various assembly and construction glues from different forms of technology which meet the requirements of the EC-1 Plus label, water and PU based technology, and hybrid technology.

Tover range of adhesives is composed of products secure for the Environment and for the user ; Tovcol TP2C (epoxy 2-component) is solvent and isocyanate free, Tovcol PU2C (polyurethane 2-component) is made with renewable raw materials, solvent free and complies with the most severe European norms concerning VOC content with the German DiBt certification; they both have the A+ certificate. With no symbol of risk on the bucket, no isocyanate, no solvent, the obtaining of A+ and Dibt certifications, Tover MS polymers adhesives (Tovcol MS and Tovcol MS Start) represent the most advanced technology and solutions in terms of human health care and environment protection. Once again Tover was forerunner and is proud to celebrate 10 years of success with the MS polymer glues!!

Thomsit Thomsit regards an ecological glue as a glue which is safe for the user and has only minimal impact on the environment. Belgium has VOC legislation for this purpose. In addition, it is not so much legislation, but rather guidelines such as EC1 and the blue Angel mark of quality which consider user health. The safety label states what the risks are when working with a particular product and draws up guidelines on how to use the product (e.g. wearing gloves or safety goggles). It also states how to react if the glue comes into contact with parts of the body such as the skin and eyes. Packaging can also be ecological. There are producers who, apart from the regular packaging, provide ecological concepts, such as a bag in a cardboard box instead of a bucket. However, buckets are often made from recycled plastic. Thomsit believes that ecological glues are all glues which do not contain solvents, have at least an EC1 certification, and do not require a safety label. This accounts for just about all (emulsion) glues from the Thomsit range apart from the dual-component PU glue.

Parquet for renovation projects

PARQUET AS A SOLUTION WITH RENOVATIONS STRUCTURE THICKNESS DETERMINES A LOT, BUT NOT EVERYTHING

Photo – La Fabrique de Parquet

There are various parameters for choosing the ‘ best solution’ for floor covering with renovations. In many cases parquet and wooden floor coverings will have to ‘take second place’ to scores of other types of floor covering. Consider, for instance, the ‘structure thickness’ of the floor as a parameter. That’s a ‘ difficult’ issue, where just about all wooden floor solutions have to give way to alternatives such as cork, laminate, design floors such as LVT or PVC, or linoleum. How do we respond to that? Answer: We simply change the basic assumption. We assume that the client has a specific preference for wood and then we consider ‘what is possible’.

Visit www.floor-forum.com

Wood has its charm The fondness for wood and wooden objects in the mind of the consumer and the related unequalled success of wood in all sorts of diverse construction and interior solutions has a lot to do with the growing quest for ‘natural’ materials. Furthermore, consumers have also been influenced by the ‘pleas’ of the prophets of doom, who (with some justification) draw attention to the worrying condition of this planet. Wood might well be a 100% natural product, but the way in which it came to us until about a few decades ago, was anything but orthodox (read ‘sustainable’). Wild cutting, unmanaged forests, and speculation compelled nature lovers to distance themselves from the use of ‘wood in construction’. Two realities brought about a change.

Parquet for renovation projects

Ecological reality

Structure thickness

In recent decades, scores of global organisations, supported by just as many governments, have been exerting pressure with the preservation of wood supplies on the planet and have done so by implementing the use of ‘labels’ which promote ‘sustainable forest management’. This movement has successfully managed to restore client confidence in the origin of wood. They are ‘pleased to hear’ that a tree is planted for each tree which we cut down.

Contrary to what people might think, the thinnest wooden floor and therefore often the most suitable wooden floor for renovation is neither multi-layer nor floating. Tradition is at high tide here! The thinnest ‘parquet’ is, without any rival, a traditional mosaic parquet, which is 6mm thick and is glued directly and fully onto the screed. Now, a leveller will sometimes be necessary in the case of renovation. Then we come out at roughly 7mm structure thickness. The thinnest multi-layer parquet (as far as we know) is 9mm thick. With floating fitting you will always need a subfloor with a damp screen. Mosaic parquet can be fitted in different patterns and, thanks to the solid wood aspect and the lack of a tongue and groove, can be sandpapered again several times.

Economic reality At the same time, globalisation and transport opportunities have ensured that the range of available wood sorts has increased considerably. From nothing but ‘oak’ (usually home grown) we have moved on to a ‘menu’ from which we can simply choose. That variety of sorts (and therefore of colours and grains) has boosted the allure of wood considerably. And so, we choose wood, also for renovations. The matter in hand now is to search out what is possible with wood within the existing conditions.

The importance of the structure height With renovation the structure height of the renovation floor is obviously a crucial matter. You have the height of ceilings, the height of doors and door thresholds, all of which are elements to be considered. Strictly speaking, we can say that there are ‘only’ two possibilities. Either the client chooses the drastic approach to demolish the existing screed or (for financial or other reasons) to work from the existing screed.

New screed: anything is possible! If we remove the existing screed in a room, the problem of the structure height largely disappears, all the more so because, in comparison with about 30 years ago, new materials now make it possible to construct a thinner screed without compromising on its strength. And so, in fact, consumers now have an unlimited choice between the various floor types on the market: ceramic, natural stone, wood and all wood derivatives, and design floors. The thickness of the screed is usually determined on the basis of the chosen floor covering. In this option wood (and wood-related) floor coverings have the slight drawback with regard to the drying time of the screed. The screed obviously has to be much dryer than with a tile floor. Yet at the same time any type of wooden floor can be chosen in that option.

On the existing screed There are several possible reasons for keeping the screed. Financial reasons are obviously logical. Local repairs can often restore the screed so that it can be used again, but sometimes even that isn’t necessary. Another reason is the existence of floor heating. With ‘wet’ floor heating it is not really advisable to demolish the screed. And so, in those cases we are saddled with the existing structure height. We either limit the possible choices of the floor or we take other construction measures such as raising doors. A difficult choice and technically not always feasible. In this situation the number of possibilities for fitting a wooden floor really is limited.

The thinnest wooden floor With renovation people soon tend to choose multi-layer wooden floors, laminate, or veneer floors. There are lots of reasons for this. Questions such as floating or glued, multi-layer or solid wood, and finished on site or pre-finished almost always form the main considerations. We analyse the situation from two important perspectives, structure thickness and potential inconveniences for occupants.

50

Floor Forum International 92

Inconveniences Another perspective when we talk about renovation is the possible inconvenience for the occupants if they continue to live on the premises during the renovation work. In that respect multi-layer parquet which is completely finished scores the highest rating provided that the structure height makes it possible. Mosaic parquet might be real parquet, as the fitting is traditional with all the related consequences: levelling, glueing, sandpapering, and finishing. Although it is possible to contain dust and odour inconveniences, there is always some inconvenience and the ‘time duration’ for completion on the site is much longer than with pre-finished floors, where there are no inconvenient side effects.

Solid wood versus multi-layer Two major arguments play an important part in the final consideration between solid wood and multi-layer and on the basis that the structure height does allow a choice.

Comfort and health Removing certain operations from the work site to have them completed in the factory does have a salutary effect on the health of both floor fitter and client. Sandpapering the floorboards and handling often harmful products for glueing and finishing is not really healthy. The client is relieved of the dust and the unpleasant odours which fitting traditional parquet involves. This is certainly one of the most important explanations for the breakthrough of multi-layer floors. The traditional inconveniences can be a (negative) threshold for anyone who is considering fitting a wooden floor in an existing home. That threshold is non-existent with multi-layer floors.

Ecological reasons There is no longer any doubt at all that consumers have developed a sharp ecological awareness in recent years in a short space of time. We all realise that the planet deserves our protective attention. The doubts which consumers had for a long time about the quality of multi-layer wooden floors have now been settled with technical arguments. The fact that you can obtain the same (visual) end result with a top layer of 2 to 3mm as with a solid wood plank of 15mm finally nails it for the end user. Mosaic is obviously also suitable here with 6mm.

What’s on the market ? BJ Parket BJ Parket believes parquet is perfectly suitable for renovation. A thin composite parquet can often be fitted on top of an existing floor without breaking up the existing floor. We’re then usually speaking about 10 to 15mm, depending on the available height. These floors

heights, the required fitting method, or the most suitable method so that you find the most suitable product for each condition. The fitting can be done by means of full glueing, floating, or nailed, depending on the sort of renovation, and each type of parquet will have an answer for the required renovation project. Generally speaking, a finished product is adapted to the fitting during a renovation project. However, certain demands are made of the ‘raw’ parquet, which has to be finished on the site after the fitting.

Meister MEISTER parquet floors are suitable for both renovation and new construction. They are also suitable for both floating and fully glued fitting. The floors have a 2.5mm real wood top layer, which is highly impact resistant to falling objects due to the strong HDF middle layer. The Masterclic Plus system ensures that parquet planks can be fitted quickly and easily. All MEISTER parquet floors are 13mm thick. MEISTER offers only pre-finished floors. Clients only have to fit these floors to enjoy them.

are usually glued multi-layer floors. It is important to remove all the grease from the existing floor before glueing multi-layer parquet onto it. The floor thickness varies from 10 to 21mm. It all depends on whether or not doors can or must be shortened and whether or not the floor is to be fitted onto a tile floor. If necessary, threshold profiles can be used for that purpose. If you have to renovate existing parquet, you don’t use pre-finished solutions. BJ Parket are very strong in this area, since they can make almost anything customised. With a new wooden floor on top of an existing floor, it also depends on whether or not the work will be carried out by a professional. A professional will often suggest a customised finish.

Coswick La Fabrique de Parquet

All Coswick Hardwood Floors are suitable for renovation. Product assortment offers possibilities of both glue-down and floating installation. 3-layer and 2-layer Coswick floors are perfect for heated floors, as well as have a superb resistance to extreme moisture conditions due to the unique engineered construction with hardwood birch in core and bottom and cork compensators in plank core layer. All Coswick designs can be purchased in Solid and engineered (3-layer and 2-layer) constructions with huge lifespan confirmed by manufacturer’s Life-time Limited Warranty provided for all the constructions. Coswick 3-layer T&G floors 19mm thick are available in widest assortment (Oak, Ash, American Walnut) and provide the best flooring solution from the point of view of design, flooring stability, sound and heat insulation and period of use (4mm top lamella).

Impexwood Parquet and wood are materials which can generally be integrated and will always adapt to a renovation project without special limitations. Obviously, some clarification is required, such as the existing

Parquet is easy to fit. Moreover, it can also be fitted perfectly well with floor heating and cooling. It adapts perfectly to most substrates and meets all aesthetic expectations. Moreover, the cost price is affordable and parquet requires few radical architectural interventions. Glued or floating, the fitting does not affect renovation in the future. However, La Fabrique de Parquet does suggest glued fitting (certainly with floor heating or cooling). They also point out that the top layer thickness determines the number of renovations (sandpapering and repainting). They are advocates of pre-finished floors.

Installing vinyl, LVT and PVC floors

POINTS TO NOTE WHEN FITTING DESIGN FLOORS FLOOR FITTERS SHOULD SEIZE NEW OPPORTUNITIES Why the success? The success of these floors mirrors that of laminate. The same sales arguments are emerging. Digital print technology and print techniques used for elements such as creating relief mean that just about all decors, whether wood, stone, or something totally different, are perfectly possible. The look of these floors in plank or tile form and the fact that they are equipped with a click system make the fitting a lot easier. This also makes these floors easy to ‘transplant’, another point which laminate manufacturers have always made. In the case of the glued versions in rolls, these floors still have the huge asset of being extremely thin. With renovation it is often possible to work on an existing floor without adapting doorsteps or doorways. Moreover, the intrinsic properties of the material itself, the structure, and the nature of the top layer also make most of these floors suitable for damp rooms.

Why something for parquet floor fitters? Here, too, we have similar feelings to those which we had when laminate started to emerge. Any self-respecting parquet floor fitter didn’t bother fitting such ‘inferior’ floor coverings. Nowadays, however, the quality of these floor coverings themselves has rendered those feelings completely out of date. Then there was the fear of cannibalism: ‘If clients opt for LVT, they won’t order parquet.’ That’s obviously correct! However, the sector then realised that if clients have actually opted for LVT, they usually continue to do so. If parquet floor fitters don’t wish to offer it in their ranges, clients will simply call upon the services of other professionals. That has little to do with cannibalism; it’s simply a matter of ‘competition’. The result? ‘Shrewd’ parquet floor fitters present themselves as providers of various floor solutions as long as these are top quality products. ‘Shrewd’ parquet floor fitters equip themselves so that they are able to fit those qualitative alternatives professionally.

Points for attention in the fitting No one will deny that floors such as vinyl, linoleum, and PVC are on the up. This development resembles the rise to success of laminate in recent decades. It’s just that laminate emerged from ‘nothing’. The floor coverings which are now described collectively as ‘ design floors’ already existed, albeit in a different form. Vinyl and linoleum have already enjoyed a period of success in the distant past. Their appearance now in the form of tiles or planks and their decorative versatility are now giving them a new ‘ boost’. Parquet floor fitters are getting on board.

52

Floor Forum International 92

In many cases flexible floor coverings are glued completely. This can be done with both flexible floor tiles and floors in rolls. Levelling needs some extra attention here since we’re going to glue directly onto the (levelled) screed. The sort of glue also differs from that of wooden floors. As is discussed elsewhere in this edition (see the article on ‘levelling agents’), levellers for a parquet floor need great compressive strength. This can sometimes also be necessary with LVT/PVC floors

if, for instance, it is a floor in a hospital (heavy hospital beds and such like). In other cases less compressive strength will also suffice, so the levelling agent is of a different type. There are also specific levellers for anhydrite covering floors. As regards the glue, too, you have to consider the difference as regards specific properties between wood on the one hand and vinyl or PVC on the other. Wood has an open structure, whilst these floors are smooth and sealed. Wood is a hard material, whilst these floors are flexible. Since it is hard for a PVC floor to absorb the damp in the wood, a glue is necessary which can cope with semi-wet or virtually dry glueing. Dispersion glues are recommended for glueing flexible floor coverings. Cork floors which have to be glued on both sides with contact glue are an exception.

Vast range of training opportunities In the various professional training opportunities (at secondary school level) or continual vocational training courses we find a vast range of training opportunities for flexible floor coverings. Some (technical) training courses even run for two years. Furthermore, there are scores of training courses organised by government or semi-government institutions for specialisation in trades such as fitting these floors. However, lots of manufacturers and suppliers also provide training for parquet floor fitters who wish to become proficient in these techniques.

A specialist Wicanders Hydrocorck is a thin and floating floor covering with a cork composite core. The floor covering is 100% waterproof and extremely stable, plus it retains all the assets of cork as regards flexibility and comfort. Its waterproof character, the thickness of barely 6mm, the vertical Press FIT system, and, finally, the visual appearance mean that Hydrocork corresponds to with most current interior trends. The fitting is especially simple. The Press Fit system benefits from the elastic (flexible) properties of cork so that the fitting runs really smoothly. The only tools are a rubber hammer (or roller) and a cutter. Points for attention are allowing it to acclimatise for 48 hours in the room where the floor is to be fitted, a ‘hard’ substrate, and the need to respect a number of expansion joints (5mm along the walls), including in the case of floor thresholds and bigger surfaces. If expansion joints have to be avoided, the floor can also be glued. The fitting, too, is very simple. Wicanders offers training for anyone who wants it.

Top Belgian companies focused on export

BELGIUM – A SMALL COUNTRY WITH GREAT CHARACTER NATIONAL PRIDE CONQUERS INTRINSIC DISCREPANCIES Cultural differences Some people think the difference in language also reflects different cultures and traditions: Germanic in the north, Romanic in the south. This difference is said to show up in political differences; Christian democrats are proportionally stronger in (rural) Flanders than in (once industrialised) Wallonia, whilst the opposite applies to social democrats. The economic heart of the country was once in the region of Wallonia, with its mines and heavy industry, but Walloon industry has been antiquated and in crisis since the 1960s. The economic importance of the region of Flanders has grown as a result of its ports, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and the constant growth of the services sector.

Brussels – a ‘separate’ case

It is well known that Belgium, a triangle ‘ invented’ by the European big shots of the day as a buffer state, is a land of discrepancies. A hotchpotch of cultures, languages, world views, and such like. You could call it a compost bin where lots of ingredients set off an effervescent ripening process a few centuries ago. Of course, good wine is also the fruit of fermentation. Belgium is a ‘proud’ country: the origin of top quality in countless diverse fields. It’s no wonder that there are also a good number of ‘crack’ parquet floor fitters out there as well.

A country of ‘fault lines’ When Belgium produces ‘world champions’, Flemings, Walloons, and people from Brussels are happy to call themselves ‘Belgian’ again. In that respect the score sheet is often balanced: Clijsters ‘number 1’, Henin ‘number 2’, and sometimes vice versa. That’s good, isn’t it? Discrepancies in Belgium started with the creation of the country and were visible in political ‘fault lines’ from the start.

Historical fault lines Post-war politics in Belgium have been dominated by so called fault lines. Those historical fault lines are: the communal (the new name for what was once described as the Flemish-Walloon discrepancies or the Flemish fight for liberation), the social (also called the class struggle or the discrepancy between the wealthy and the workers), and, finally, the ideological (at first sight the discrepancy between clerical-anti-clerical, but extended to include ethical issues such as abortion, euthanasia, and the separation of church and state). These fault lines are often mirrored by political parties, but they often divide parties as well. The unique political structure has emerged from those fault lines.

Brussels, federal capital, capital of the Flemish Region and Brussels Capital Region, and seat of the European Council, European Parliament, and European Commission, and many other international organisations, is without a doubt the major city in the country, and also the most controversial; it forms the hub of lots of disputes. Historically, Brussels has always been a Dutch-speaking city in Brabant and the Brussels Capital Region is enclosed entirely by the Flemish Region. Brussels is the capital city of Flanders, but also of the French-speaking Community. In theory, Brussels is bilingual, but in practice multilingual with French as the main language. Like all big cities, Brussels is spreading out further to the edge of the Flemish Region, which belongs to the Flemish Community. That causes political and communal tensions, which can lead to serious problems.

Waffling politics Waffling politics has been a typical feature of Belgium as a means of buying off tensions, sometimes also in communal issues. Waffling politics basically means that each investment in one place had to be matched by a similar investment in the rival region or vice versa. An example is the magnificent Ship Lift of Ronquières as compensation for the expansion of the Port of Bruges-Zeebrugge.

Federalisation Federalisation at the end of the last century led to political parties undergoing a metamorphosis. The major unitary (national) parties divided up into a French-speaking and a Dutch-speaking wing (BSP-PSB became sp.a and PS; CVP-PSC became CD&V and cdH). Since then, politicians from the different regions (or communities, as the case may be) have tended to form networks mainly within their own language group, whilst contacts over the language border run less smoothly, as politicians don’t know each other as well (personally), and a sort of communication arises over the linguistic border in which the press acts as ‘proxy’.

Economic projections for Belgium The National Bank of Belgium publishes economic projections for Belgium twice a year. The most recent projections for Belgium,

published on 13 June 2017, were concluded on 23 May 2017. The corresponding results for the euro zone are published in the Economic Bulletin of the ECB.

Indicators Growth in 2017 is expected to improve by up to 1.6% and should maintain the same speed for the next two years (1.6% in 2018 and 1.5% in 2019). About 115,000 extra jobs will be created between 2017 and 2019 (in cumulative terms), whilst the level of unemployment should fall to 7.2%. Inflation has shown an upward trend, which is closely related to the course of energy prices. On an annual basis inflation should amount to 2.2% in 2017, 1.7% in 2018, and 1.8% in 2019. The government deficit, which was estimated at 2.6% GDP in 2016, should fall back to 2.0% in 2017, partly thanks to the announced spending cuts, but will hardly improve after that.

Forests, wood, and parquet 21.4% of the country’s surface area is covered with forests, especially in Wallonia. In Flanders there are mainly agricultural zones outside cities and industrial areas with some forests mainly in Kempen (east of the city of Antwerp and North Limburg). Major forests in Brabant include Haller Forest, Sonian Forest near Brussels, and Heverlee Forest and Meerdaal Forest near Leuven. The total forest area in Flanders is 146,381 hectares; there are also 22,135 hectares of park managed by towns and cities. There are extensive areas of natural beauty in the Ardennes because the population density is much lower than in

Flanders. A third of the surface area of Wallonia is forest area and that area is getting bigger and bigger. However, a large part of that forest consists of pine forests with little natural value. One of the most unspoilt pieces of nature in Belgium are the High Venen. Due to the severe climate, plentiful rain, and the harsh long winters, you can find there some rare types of plant, which are typical of mountainous regions or Northern Europe. However, the unusual flora in the High Venen is threatened by climate change.

Parquet and wooden floors Belgians are becoming increasingly fond of wooden floors. On a European scale the Belgians aren’t great producers, but consumption is relatively high. As the smallest parquet country in Europe, Belgium accounts for 0.66% of all production (2012). And so, 466,705,80 square metres of parquet were produced in Belgium that year. Whilst the European production volume fell, the Belgian portion rose with an increase in the number of square metres produced (450,556m² in 2012). Belgium is still the smallest producer, followed by Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Hungary. On the other hand, growing numbers of consumers are choosing parquet. Belgium accounts for 3.59% of European consumption, thereby consuming more than Rumania, Hungary, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. In 2012, consumption in the FEP countries fell by no less than 5.88% to flounder on 87,509,000m². Here, too, the Belgian share of the total consumption rose to 3.63%, but actual consumption fell from 3,328.952m² to 3,176,576m².

SOUDAL (adapted text De Tijd) SOUDAL CONQUERS ASIA TAKEOVER OF SECTOR RIVAL DONG YANG IS A SPRINGBOARD Soudal may well be a top Belgian company with strong roots in the Kempen, but they have long since realised that Belgium is merely a tiny dot on the world map. The ‘girth’ of Belgium means that the area covered by other countries (i.e. abroad) is considerably bigger than the national market. The lion’s share of that area abroad is to be found in Asia. Asia as a target The takeover of Dong Yang in South Korea fits in perfectly with this goal. CEO Dirk Coorevits comments: ‘This takeover fits in completely with the strategy of local production and sales capacity in Asia. A huge continent with huge growth opportunities. We’ve already been to China and India. Last year, we opened sales offices in Thailand and Vietnam, and, after that, we set up on the Iranian market. We’re also striving for local production in our global expansion, close to the market. For instance, we’ve already produced goods in Asia in India and, obviously, there’s also our production capacity in China. That’s actually a continent in and of itself. We use our production in China mainly for the local market rather than as a springboard to other Asian countries. However, we’re certainly going to use the recent takeover of Dong Yang as a springboard.’ Photo Tom Goyvaerts Innovation as the motor for growth Soudal has been growing for several years and has seemingly been on a mission of global conquest. One of its weapons is the constant innovation in the field of products and applications. The number of offices worldwide is impressive, as is the annual turnover. Dirk Coorevits says: ‘Over the last thirty years, we’ve grown on average by 13.8% per annum and there is no reason why we can’t continue to grow next year. At present, we have over 2,800 employees, who are active in 17 production offices and 63 sales offices in four continents. Those numbers will continue to grow in the coming years, as will turnover. Our goal is to reach the symbolic peak of one billion euros by 2020.’ The power of people ‘A new front has also opened up on the jobs market,’ says Dirk Coorevits. ‘Over the last five years, our workforce has grown by over 1,000 people. And if we have anything to do with it, we will be recruiting plenty more in the future as well. We as a company certainly enjoy an ever increasing profile thanks mainly to our sponsorship of Lotto Soudal, but we are less well known as an employer with tremendous opportunities for employees. That’s why we’re concentrating increasingly on employer branding. We want to profile ourselves not only as one of the most successful companies, but also as one of the best employers. In short, a Belgian success story which is worth being ‘followed’. + 32 (0) 14 42 42 31 - www.soudal.com

CSP ENGINEERING Since 2014, CSP Engineering focusses on exports within the European Union, thanks to the development of PAR Filler®, the highly innovative machine which automatically fills knots and cracks in parquet floors. The possibilities of the PAR Filler® are used optimally as from a certain production capacity and therefore it was a necessity for the company to look beyond the Benelux. Quote of Jan Peeters, General Manager of CSP Engineering says: 'We target medium and large producers of wooden floorboards and their number is limited in the Benelux, so we had to expand within the EU.' This has not done the company any harm. In just three years, CSP Engineering has almost tripled its staff. The Demand for high-end machines comes from all corners of Europe: Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary. As a specialist in automatization for the parquet sector, CSP Engineering, next to PAR Filler® also developed the PAR Duo®, a machine for bonding 2 layer parquet with perfect adhesion. The Belgian company based in Dessel also offers various solutions for packing and stacking parquet completely automatically without intervention of an operator. Neuhofer Holz presented innovations at the Branchentag Holz Neuhofer Holz, already renowned for its innovation strength, presented its latest products at the German timber sector trade fair Branchentag Holz (14 - 15.11.2017) in Cologne Germany, where the company had its own stand for the first time. The additions to the company's portfolio showcased included printed three-layer and MDF boards. These are offered with a range of surface treatments including brushed, chopped and plain sanded. Each surface brings out the printed images and designs in a highly individual and impressive manner. These boards can be used with a mature timber look for interior decoration or furniture, for example, or to simply print a beautiful picture as a wall decoration. The cut surfaces of the panel can then be covered using the veneer edge that is designed to match the decor. Neuhofer Holz also offers natural mature timber - in the form of beams, boards with a sunburnt surface and original chopped boards. These can be used for a wide range of purposes including for tables, chairs, shelves, wall elements and flooring. Mature timber can be used to create a very special living environment with a high level of comfort. For constructive interior decoration the FN wood-pro product was unveiled. This is a post planed from four sides which is particularly stable in terms of shape and dimensions courtesy of the glued veneer layers of which it is composed. FN wood-pro has 25% more bending and tensile strength than spruce wood of the same size. In addition the company presented products to the professional audience that can be assembled quickly and easily (screw, nail, glue) since time is of the essence in the trade. Neuhofer Holz naturally also focused on the needs of the wholesale trade. "We were able to hold promising discussions with both existing and prospective customers and overall the Branchentag Holz event was very successful for us", says Managing Director Franz Neuhofer.

The Bostik Pumping Truck – major benefits with major projects - vast time saving for the contractor; it is not necessary for the teams to return to the site the next day to level the remaining surfaces; - it is possible to level large surfaces on different storeys in a short space of time; - no need to hump bags of levelling agent upstairs; just open them and mix them manually; - no waste from empty bags and no dust when mixing the levelling agent during the work; - the levelling agent can be spread using a squeegee so that you can work standing up rather than crouched; - the levelling agent is completely uniform and flat; no transitions as a result of the constant use of the levelling agent and use of the roller.
