WELCOME to the 27th International Guitar Festival of Great Britain. This year we are proud to bring you some of the finest guitarists currently playing and bands that feature the guitar as an integral part of their music. Once again, the festival sets out to show the breadth and range of the guitar as music has moved into the 21st Century. The festival has always attempted to place the musicians in intimate settings where the audience feels connected with the artists. The main house and Blue Lounge at the Floral Pavilion as well
as The Queens Royal Hotel are perfect for this synergy.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
The month of November, unlike summer festival months, offered little competition and also allowed better access to guitarists who might otherwise have been busy. In November 1989, the first ‘Wirral International Guitar Festival’ ran for 7 days, presented 18 concerts and events, and was a resounding success. In 1991 the name was changed to the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain.
In 1988, Wirral Council’s newly appointed Arts Officer, Rob Smith, was looking to create a different kind of ‘community festival’ for Wirral. At the reopening of the recently refurbished Birkenhead Priory, he met musician Brendan McCormack, who suggested a guitar festival which celebrated the guitar in all of its styles and musical genres. Their aim was to bring top class national and international players to Wirral performing the widest range of styles and repertoire, whilst also providing a platform for local talent.
OUR MEDIA PARTNERS
Classical music, Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock’n’Roll and Rock are all here throughout November setting Wirral alight with great music.
Now, under the directorship of Dave Tracey, it continues that spirit of attracting the best international artists, whilst also showcasing very talented local players.
Please join us in celebrating the guitar! We look forward to your company. The International Guitar Festival of Great Britain Team.

THE QUEENS ROYAL
We’re delighted to be partnering once again with our neighbours The Queens Royal to present the Brendan McCormack Series.
The first floor concert room seats up to 100 people and is ideally suited for classical and jazz concerts and perfectly complements the programme at the Floral Pavilion’s main auditorium and Blue Lounge. This imposing, Victorian building on the seafront is also a hotel, restaurant and home to a runnerup CAMRA Best Pub.
The relaxed and friendly bar at The Queens Royal is extremely popular with both locals, residents and Floral Pavilion theatregoers and in April was renamed ‘The Stage Door Tap @ The Queen’s Royal’ featuring old theatre and
THE BRENDAN MCCORMACK SERIES Liverpool-born Brendan McCormack co-founded the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain with Rob Smith in 1988. He was the director of the festival for many years and encouraged many guitarists to play in Wirral for the first time through his powerful personality and the respect he earned as a virtuoso guitarist.
Brendan was able to play in any style with great skill and panache. Rock, Classical and Early Music all interested him. Performing in concert halls, theatres or cafés, Brendan always respected the audience and left them bathed in the majesty of the music he played for them. Brendan sadly died unexpectedly in 2009. The International Guitar Festival of Great Britain owes him an immense debt of gratitude and will always present his concert series.

A veteran acoustic ‘powersolo’ player and winner of the prestigious PRS John Lennon Award for songwriting, Gerry Murphy has played the Guitar Festival on previous occasions
at Birkenhead Priory, the Plaza Lounge at the Floral Pavilion, Williamson Art Gallery and now comes to The Queens. He is author of Sweet Liberty, Marvellous Marvin Gaye and re-worker of titles like Valerie in swing jazz style and Pinball Wizard in the style of Johnny Cash. fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’. About 20 albums and thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation around the world as one of the finest exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms. With this line-up, it’s hardly surprising.

NASHER
FRI 6th NOV 7:30pm Floral Pavilion Blue Lounge £13 (£11)
As a member of 80’s pop sensation Frankie Goes To Hollywood, guitarist Nasher
topped the charts and travelled the world. The band exploded in 1984 and imploded in 1987 and most people think that was the end of the story. Nasher has been very quietly writing, producing and recoding his own music and to date has three solo albums under his belt. His gigs are a cross between an engaging troubador and an aspiring comedian interspersed with Nasher’s own compositions and maybe an odd Frankie tune. www.reverbnation/babylonpink
THE RICK VITO BAND
SUN 15th NOV 7:30pm Floral Pavilion Blue Lounge £19 (£17) Philadelphian guitarist Rick Vito has a musical pedigree second to none. Early in his career he played alongside Delaney and Bonnie, Todd Rundgren and Little Richard. His playing has been influenced by such players as James Burton, B.B. King and Keith Richards. Rick is perhaps best remembered for his work with John Mayall and Fleetwood Mac and continues to play with Mick Fleetwood
in his blues band. He has also worked with Roger McGuinn, Bonnie Raitt, Rita Coolidge, Maria Muldau, Dolly Parton and Bob Seger. Simply put Rick is one of the world’s greatest guitarists.
