A Cocktail Reception Launches the Portuguese Version of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens’ Audio Tour

About 280 people gathered at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens recently to celebrate the launch of the Portuguese version of its new audio tour, Discover Vizcaya. The reception was hosted by the Honorable Hélio Vitor Ramos F., Consul General of Brazil in Miami, and Brickellian Founder Stella M. Holmes. “Vizcaya is a landmark of Miami and thus we are very glad to have a guided tour in Portuguese to its beautiful grounds. This accomplishment is yet another indication of the auspicious moment we are experiencing in the fruitful relationship between Brazil and Florida,” said Ambassador Ramos F.

I have never been in São Paulo – for seven days we probably entered from the east, and at the time of greatest peace and quietness, we entered a familiar territory where we could be tourists, researchers, makers of images, tellers of fantastic stories, foreign painters running downhill, with bread and bananas as food, sheets of paper and brushes confirming the illusion of time, hours drawing in the barracks hoping for the rain so as not to go out and thus be able to draw their mates, their new landscape, that life they were making up. That place is WEE, a smart and intense jumble, a mixture of childhood and history where I felt fraternity instantly, I thought I recognized the same place that we come from. It is odd – Japan does not remind me of Japan but my childhood does remind me of that country and I even think it does so in a more definitive fashion. I knew Japan when I was 20, a place where no one knew that they themselves lived in remote locations, among unknown fruit, exotic languages and different faces, the analogous Japan. In a recent trip to São Paulo I ended up understanding that I was there and took pictures but when I see the pictures, the territory becomes the intangible energy of WEE, so then, how can I photograph it?

Ms. Holmes, who is also a member of the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Trust, is a major supporter of the translation of the tour in to Portuguese. “Miami is Vizcaya’s home, but like all great works of art, it belongs to the world,” she said. “I have always believed that art is a wonderful bridge of communication between cultures. With this Portuguese version of the Vizcaya’s audio tour, we warmly welcome visitors from Brazil and South Florida’s Portuguese-speaking residents.” “The addition of a Portuguese version of the Discover Vizcaya audio tour reflects the ever-increasing international visitors to Miami-Dade County’s most popular visual arts museum,” said Vizcaya’s Executive Director Joel Hoffman. Built between 1914 and 1922, Vizcaya was the Miami estate of International Harvester Vice President James Deering. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is now designated a National Historic Landmark and is owned and operated by Miami-Dade County. The Discover Vizcaya audio tour, which is about 90 minutes long, guides visitors through the main spaces and primary ideas associated with Vizcaya at their own pace. It’s also available in English, Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole.

What Ever Happened to Brickell Gallery Night?

calendar

We’ve been asked this question several times recently. Brickell Gallery Night, which began as a series of networking events featuring emerging and established local artists, has evolved into West Encounters East, a project to discover and promote Latin American artists of Asian heritage who are expressing their bicultural roots through the medium of art. We first met many of them through Brickell Gallery Night. Right now, we are finishing a documentary about these artists that will be broadcast on WPBT next year.

Lecture and Reception: Instropection and Awakening: Japanese Art of the Edo and Meiji Periods, 1615-1912. By Director and Chief Curator, Brian Dursum. Storer Auditorium of UM School of Business.

Over the past few months, I have been traveling with my production team to wrap up filming for West Encounters East: The Japanese Brazilians, a TV documentary scheduled to air on PBS next year. We shared many incredible encounters. In São Paulo, home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan, we visited with Brazilian artists with Japanese backgrounds to talk about how they experience and express their bicultural heritage through their art. In Japan, we traveled into the Japanese Alps with the famous Japanese-Brazilian artist Yutaka Toyota, who has lived in São Paulo for many years. He graciously took us on a tour of some of his monumental sculptures.

ers and others gave freely of their time and expertise, shared their experiences, and opened their hearts.

Everywhere we went, I was humbled by the courtesy with which we were welcomed. Artists, gallery own-

Brickellians can still enjoy the Brickell Gallery Night experience. Brickell Art Walk, an arts event founded by Director Felipe Garcia, continues the tradition. It’s held the last Tuesday of every month in the Mary Brickell Village area, and will include artworks by some of the same artists featured in West Encounters East. Visit www. brickellartwalk.com for more details.

West Encounters East Travels to Japan Linda Corley

In May executive producer Stella Holmes and producer Linda Corley traveled with their production team to Japan for the second leg of field production of the upcoming one-hour documentary, West Encounters East, a remarkable journey that uncovers the artistic talents of Brazilian artists of Japanese descent. The team traveled over ten days to various cities and towns across Japan, covering the local contemporary art scene, meeting living legends in the Japanese art world, and visiting the country’s top museums and art galleries, such as the Tokyo Galley, the oldest contemporary art gallery in Tokyo. Traveling north on the Japan’s famed bullet train to a mountain area known as the Japanese Alps, the team photographed beautiful vistas and quaint towns, including Tendo, the birthplace of Yutaka Toyota (b. 1931), one of the featured artists in West Encounters East. Toyota, who has become a legend in the art community in Brazil, took Stella and her team to visit some of his monumental sculptures that grace the landscape of Japan, including his impressive pieces seen at the Tendo City Museum.

Contemporary art was a focus for much of the trip, but the team took a break from all that is “new” and traveled to one of Japan’s oldest cities, Kyoto, the former capital for one thousand years. While in the ancient city they toured the Kiyomizu Temple. On the day the team was shooting a segment for the documentary, they encountered the unveiling of a Buddha statue to commemorate the 20,000 souls lost during last year’s earthquake and tsunami. This was perhaps the most impressive artwork encountered by the documentary team, as it was created out of an oak tree that had washed ashore during the tsunami and later lovingly carved by art students who covered it in a golden splendor. It honored those who had died, but most importantly it demonstrated the resilience of the Japanese people and the rebounding spirit that is Japan.
