Our Concept Store & Gallery, located in Cape Town’s vibey Kloof Street brings the key ingredients of the Opulent Living brand together in one beautiful space that celebrates the best of lifestyle, art and travel – simply the finer things in life. Our aim is to offer an experience with a difference, sourcing and curating collections that are predominantly African, many of them coming from the wider Cape Town area. We sell artwork from some of the country’s finest sculptors and painters, as well as limited-edition prints, art photography and works from young and upcoming artists from the African continent. We also offer exquisitely made jewellery, clothing, accessories, leather goods, décor pieces and beautiful collector’s items. And we love to tell the stories behind our products. Now we are giving our international clients the opportunity to access our collections via the internet or by email and phone. Simply contact us and we will assist you. You won’t even need to come into our Concept Store & Gallery as we’ll ship your purchase directly to you – wherever you are in the world. What could be more convenient – or luxurious? Though of course, if you are in Cape Town, we’d love to see you at 24 Kloof Street. We’re confident you’ll feel it was worth the trip. Carpe diem, Barbara Lenhard & Florian Gast

The cutest friends – each a handcrafted masterpiece. Celebrated for its iconic hand-embroidered teddy bears, Taunina is a luxury house synonymous with timeless artistry and social upliftment. The company provides full-time employment to women from disadvantaged communities in Africa through its atelier in Cape Town. The name Taunina is an anagram of the African word ‘tau’, meaning ‘lion’, and ‘NINA’, an acronym for ‘No Income, No Assets’. Taunina gives women who were once without income and assets the power to become lions of their own destinies. Each creation is one of a kind, designed and embellished by a single artist over five to seven days. The rare beauty of a Taunina collection piece lies in the opportunity it affords a woman in need to use traditional hand-skills to provide for her family and be recognised as an artist. Taunina bears carry the initials of the women who make them, symbolic of their sense of dignity and pride. A Taunina creation is a work of art, an heirloom to be passed from one generation to the next. It is a gift that changes lives.

Each Taunina bear comes with a unique serial number, a passport that includes a picture of the bear and its creator, and is packed in a luxurious box. A range of designs and colourways are available. n Size ‘Petite’ (approx 26cm tall

Art made out of the original Robben Island Prison fence. Every section of the original Robben Island fence is marked with its own unique ridges and grooves: the poignant scars of history lived and lessons learnt. Which is why a bespoke artwork created by Charmaine Taylor from the original fence that imprisoned freedom fighters such as Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu is a striking and very special artefact to own and show in your home. This is truly art with heart; a profound, timeless and iconic investment. Each Legacy Collection artwork has its own unique character, is photographed and tagged with a serial number and comes with a certificate of authenticity. It can be framed in a choice of a white, black or natural dark wood, together with a plaque that reads ‘Original fence from Robben Island prison’.

The spirit of Africa hand painted by local craftsmen. Or-gari Golden Safari is a collection of exquisitely made, collectable dĂŠcor products that represent the flora and fauna of South Africa in both their form and decoration. Designed by London-trained Heidi Snaith, each elegant ceramic piece is hand-painted by a small team of artists based in the Western Cape. Each is an original, and comes signed by the artist. The My Rhino Collection consists of perfectly proportioned, life-size fibreglass rhinos that are decorated and painted by well-known South African artists to encapsulate the essence of Africa, love and emotion. These large rhinos are then replicated into smaller ceramic rhinos, with proceeds going to the Endangered Wildlife Trust. Each rhino comes with a certificate that is individually signed, numbered and dated. The My Olifant Collection comprises small ceramic elephants all originally hand painted and signed, while the popular Dung Beetle Collection has hand-painted ceramic balls that open up to reveal a candle made of organic soy wax. Nestled against each ball is a matching beetle made from pewter and hand-painted ceramic.

African accessories and gifts. Visitors to the game parks of South Africa are almost sure to come across the country’s national animal, the springbok. This slender gazelle is one of the most abundant grazers in the western parts of the country, and instantly recognisable thanks to the characteristic markings on its fur. Equally ubiquitous is the blue wildebeest, distinguished by its box-like head and curving horns, and the zebra, known for its distinctive striped coat. All are native to Africa and, like the Nile Crocodile that lurks in the continent’s rivers, give rise to exotic leathers with distinctive patterns that instantly speak of the African bush. The Opulent Living Concept Store & Gallery sells a curated selection of accessories made from the finest exotic leathers and furs. These include toiletry bags, bangles and coasters, as well as belts made in Kenya and studded with glass beads.

Sizwe Khoza Sizwe Khoza was born in Mozambique but moved to Johannesburg as a child. He attended Saturday classes at the Artist Proof Studio while in school, and went on to study there, graduating as one of the top students in his class in 2012. After serving a residency at William Humphrey Art Gallery in Kimberley under the mentorship of Dumisani Mabaso, he returned to teach at the studio. Twice a year Khoza travels to Mozambique where he takes photographs that inspire his work. He specialises in monotype and combined printmaking techniques and has had numerous exhibitions. “My work started as a comparison between a game of chess and my background,” he says. “In chess, the King has to be protected, and other pieces are sacrificed to do this. In recent years I’ve focused a lot on the Queens – the women in my life – and the Pawns, and have now introduced other pieces, like the Rooks, Bishops and Knights, who also played a major role around me. “I focus on portraits to tell the story from the eyes and facial expressions. I use monotypes as a way to express the fact that life itself never repeats, but actions do repeat almost like a rhyme. As in the game of chess, you can’t make the same move twice, but the game will be played again and again with similar actions and consequences.” “I’m also intrigued by how kids live life, enjoy each moment without worry about tomorrow, living with joy and wonder for all the things around them.”

Richard Scott Cape Town artist Richard Scott has fast become a household name thanks to his popularity on both the South African and international art market for his distinctive ‘Naive meets Pop’ style. Colourful and figurative, Richard’s work mostly portrays female seminudes in a variety of playful stances, or his other favourite subjects, trees, animals, cars, lighthouses and planes. Richard’s paintings fascinate because of their daring simplicity and directness, illustrating his indifference to serious academic sanctioning and unknowingly even provoking and problematising formal classification. Richard is always passionate about his art, his creative processes and his conceptualisation of ideas, whether he works in sculpture, painting, drawing, graphics or prints. Like numerous other Pop artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, he values the creative process as highly as the finished product.

Jimmy Law Artist Jimmy Law was born in Bloemfontein in September 1970 and has been drawing ever since he can remember. After studying Graphic Design at the Central University of Technology, he moved to Cape Town where he found work as a freelance illustrator and in the comic book industry. In 2008, he finally made the decision to focus entirely on his painting. At the time, he worked in a photo-realistic style and his canvases took a long time to complete. In December 2010, however, he radically changed his painting style, using only large brushes, which initiated some remarkable changes and effectively started his career as a serious, full-time artist. His focus is on creating energetic and expressive portraits and nudes in a fairly large format using oils. “I started working with palette knifes during the winter of 2014 and have since fallen in love with them,” says Jimmy. “Many of my current works consist largely of palette knife work combined with brushes. I am fascinated with the human face and features and the multitude of expressions and emotions found within a person’s eyes. Our faces are like landscapes with endless variation and complexities. I am drawn to explore this landscape.“

Ramarutha Makoba Ramarutha Makoba was born in Soweto in 1984 where he grew up in Diepkloof Zone 3 and 4. From an early age he loved watching cartoons and used to draw his favourite characters. His father was a good artist but treated art as a hobby. It was his grandmother who was the first person to encourage Ramarutha to take his art seriously. When Ramarutha was 13, he attended art classes at a local community centre where Chris Molefe had a profound influence on his work. He later attended workshops at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and completed a two-year course at FUBA (Federated Union of Black Artists). He joined Artist Proof Studio in 2004 where he received certificates of excellence in his first and second years and was selected to further his printmaking. He completed the third-year professional print programme in 2007. He is now Head Teacher at The Little Artist School, a Johannesburg-based project that creates an opportunity for disadvantaged youth to attend art classes and to learn a skill, and continues to produce unique works that combine print processes, painting and charcoal. “Scratching into the plate allows me to create an image that reflects a time and place that is close to me,” says Ramarutha. “My work deals with social ignorance and the hardship of people with few resources. The works express a personal story of my relationship with my community.”

Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe grew up on a farm near the diamond mining town of Cullinan. It was here that she became interested in art, creating and re-interpreting materials from an early age. She remembers sitting on the banks of a small stream and building imaginary cities and their people from the red mud, and recalls being on the floor in her mother’s ceramic studio and pressing fingerprints into a ball of clay, entranced by the malleability. Marieke studied Fine Art at the University of Pretoria, with a major in sculpture. She is currently in the process of completing her Masters in Fine Art at the University of the Witwatersrand. Considered South Africa’s most successful female sculptor, Marieke has completed numerous private and public commissions and her work is represented in several public sites, private collections and galleries both nationally and abroad. The primary focus and preoccupation of Marieke’s body of work is and has been an exploration of the female form. She is intrigued by the way in which sculpture mimics the three dimensionality of a human presence and thus the slightly surreal dialogue it invites – human to human look-alike. She also loves the capacity that sculpture has to freeze the transient into sculpted reality keeping it “alive” long after moments and persons have changed.

Klaus Tiedge Born in Germany, Klaus Tiedge’s career as a commercials and fashion photographer saw him shooting in many locations around the world, including New York, London, New Delhi, Tokyo and Sao Paulo. But it was Cape Town that caught his attention in the late 1990s. In 2001, Klaus and his wife Sandra made South Africa their permanent home. Over the next seven years, travel across southern Africa gave Klaus the opportunity to work with various people in exotic places, and exposed him to the hugely diverse and beautiful landscapes of the region. As a result, he made the move to nature and wildlife photography. Now one of the continent’s leading stylised wildlife photographers, Klaus consistently produces work that combines the freshness of Africa’s people and animals in their natural environments with his precise Teutonic touch, giving his shots a revitalised cover feel. His signature desaturated colouring perfectly showcases the region’s spectacular natural beauty, whether it’s storm clouds building up over the Okavango or smouldering sunsets over Etosha. “Nature has a way of being incredibly unpredictable,” he says. “I can sit for hours, sometimes days and even up to weeks at a time, trying to capture that perfect moment in the bush, when an animal’s pose, breathtaking light, a perfectly balanced background and a dramatic setting all come together in one single focus.”

Michaela Rinaldi “My art is my process,” says Michaela Rinaldi. “A journey of growth through painting. An awakening of consciousness through my gift and a therapy that I’m compelled to go to daily and relentlessly.” “I am constantly experimenting; finding new techniques and new ways of expressing myself. I am following no rules, no set format or trying to please. I paint from the heart, truth is my only way. I am not concerned with proportion or perfection. I capture a feeling. My latest affair is with colour!” “If you were to look at my art you would probably describe it as Abstract Figurative, but that is only what the eyes see. I paint from a place of feeling, the pieces are not literal, but all come from a deep place within. I would encourage you to look at my paintings with your heart, rather than your eyes. Don’t be concerned with my story, what is yours? How does the painting make you feel? What emotions and feelings does it stir in you? How does it resonate with you? If you can look at the piece in this way, the painting will take on a whole new life, different from person to person. A personal and intimate experience. If I can achieve this in you, then my piece is complete.”

Justice Mathonsi Justice Mathonsi’s work explores the lives of the people who raised him, showing the connection between his life and his relatives. Born in Soweto but raised in rural Limpopo, he is currently a student at Johannesburg’s Artist Proof Studio, where he specialises in lino reduction and dreams of pursuing a career as an artist and printmaker. “My body of work pays a tribute and homage to the many women who raised me,” he says. “I grew up in a rural area called Ribugwani in Limpopo. I was raised by the elderly women in my community who became my grandmothers. Under their guidance they taught me about Tsonga values and culture and how to be a man.” “The body of work consists of large-scale portraits of these individual women to emphasise their importance in my life and within the community. My portraits are very detailed and show the elements of time, age, history and knowledge evident in the lines of their faces. The large portraits confront the viewer to acknowledge the huge role these woman play in raising children, which is often not recognised in our society. They are humble woman elevated to an important status through my mark making and the pattern pays homage to my Tsonga roots. I see this body of work as a record of my family tree.”

African Wildlife Taking its name from the Zulu words meaning ‘source of light for the planet’, Wild Africa – Isibane Sesizwe is a series of 15 impressive wildlife photographs showcasing iconic wild animals from the African continent. Created as decorative and stylish art pieces, the images also aim to draw attention to one of the most pressing wildlife topics in Africa: the need for better conservation. With threats ranging from ivory poaching and illegal trade in wild animals to the shrinking habitats of certain species, future generations may only be able to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat if current conservation efforts succeed. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international nongovernmental organisation working in the field of wilderness preservation. Some of the profits from the series will go to WWF South Africa in order to support its work in conserving wildlife for future generations.

Mark Peters Born and educated in Bulawayo, in what was then Rhodesia, Mark Peters started his career as a news photographer in a time of turmoil in southern Africa. Working for the Bulawayo Chronicle in 1975, while war raged in Rhodesia, Mark (in his own words) “covered everything from old ladies’ tea parties to murdered nuns”. Mark has worked both as an in-house and freelance photographer for such publications as Johannesburg’s The Star (from 1978), The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Sunday Times of London, the Chicago Tribune, and finally Newsweek magazine – who published Mark’s famous photograph of Nelson Mandela’s triumphant walk to freedom on its cover. Sunday 11 February 1990 was the momentous date of Mandela’s release from prison. After 27 years behind bars, the famous anti-apartheid activist finally walked out of Victor Verster Prison. Mark was there – and took the now iconic photo of Mandela raising his fist as he tasted freedom for the first time in almost three decades. Across the Atlantic, Newsweek had decided to hold its cover for only the second time in its history. The first time was the end of the Second World War. At the prison gates the air was electric. “I raised my camera and made three frames as Mandela raised his arm in triumph,” remembers Mark. “Driving back to Cape Town at high speed I was the first photographer to arrive at the Associated Press office. After I processed my film and saw my image was in focus, I offered it to the awaiting photo editor free, as long as he transmitted it straight to the Newsweek office in New York. He agreed and the first photo of Nelson Mandela as a free man was transmitted across the world. As for me, I got the cover of Newsweek. Newsweek was the first magazine to have Mandela on its cover – and I had scored my first world exclusive.”

The iconic photograph taken by Mark Peters on the historic day of Mandela’s release on 11 February 1990 is available as an original photographic art print, part of a limited edition of 50 signed by the photographer. n Framed print: US$3 990
