Founded in 1887, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is a public, historically Black university located in Tallahassee, Florida. What distinguishes FAMU from other universities is its legacy of providing access to a high-quality, affordable education with programs and services that guide students toward successfully achieving their dreams. HOUSING During your first year of college, you will be thrust into a new environment with new people, decisions and responsibilities. University Housing can help you through this transition, as well as better enable you to take full advantage of what the University has to offer. The application deadline for priority housing is June 1. Accommodating 2,300 students, our eight residence halls offer safety, convenience, special programs and camaraderie. All freshmen are required to reside on campus unless their parent or guardian resides within a 35-mile radius of campus.
LIVING-LEARNING COMMUNITIES (LLCs) LLCs help students create a stong link between their lives in the residence hall and learning experiences in the classroom. Students with similar interests, goals and academic programs are placed together on designated floors for a unique learning experience. The LLC program emphasizes faculty and student engagement, service learning, career-related experiences, leadership development, mentoring, study groups, global education, cultural activities and other programming for student success. FAMU LLCs include education, agriculture, food science, environmental sciences, engineering, science and technology, allied health, business, journalism and honors with more on the way. UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS The fees listed are determined by the State Legislature and Board of Trustees and are subject to change without notice. All registration fees for undergraduate students are based on 15 hours for fall and spring semesters and nine hours for summer.You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) and 18 academic units: English (4), mathematics (4), natural science (3), social science (3), foreign language (2), and additional academic core units (2). Transfer applicants with 60 semester/90 quarter hours of transferable credit must have at least a 2.0 GPA (4.0 scale) and submit official college transcript(s). Transfer applicants with fewer than 30 semester hours must meet first-timein-college freshman admission requirements and submit an official high school transcript and official college transcript(s). Transfers who have at least 30 semester hours, a 2.5 GPA, have taken the SAT/ACT and have a 2.5 high school GPA will be considered for admission. There is a non-refundable application fee of $35. Application deadlines are: May 1 for the fall semester; Nov. 1 for the spring semester; and March 1 for the summer term. Mascot
The Rattler mascot is based on popular folklore. When the school relocated to Highwood Plantation in 1891, the rural landscape had an abundance of snakes, especially rattlesnakes. This is how the mascot name, “The Rattlers,” was chosen.
Intercollegiate ATHLETICS
Beginning in the 2021-22 academic year, FAMU will become a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). FAMU sponsors 16 NCAA Division I teams for men and women, and participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Varsity sports consist of baseball, basketball, bowling, football, golf, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION AND CAMPUS VISITS The Office of New Student Orientation and Campus Visit’s mission is to provide programs and activities that aid in the successful transition of high school and community college students into the university setting. The Office of New Student Orientation and Campus Visits facilitates programs to address every aspect of the new students’ experience through programs that promote awareness of: university policies and procedures, the availability of student services, and student life activities, organizations and University traditions. CENTER for DISABILITY ACCESS AND RESOURCES (CeDAR) The Center for Disability Access and Resources (CeDAR) provides services for registered students who have a documented disability. VICTIM ADVOCATE PROGRAM The Victim Advocate Program serves as a confidential resource and support service for anyone in the University community who has been a victim of a crime. The Florida A&M University IGNITE Transfer Program provides guaranteed “general” admission to students who obtain their Associate of Art’s degree from a Florida Community or State College. The program prepares and guides students in successfully achieving their bachelor’s degree. From the start, students have access to FAMU transfer specialists, curriculum maps for anticipated majors, an IGNITE card which provides free access to many on-campus events, and consideration for transfer scholarships. The IGNITE Program goes beyond the state-wide articulation agreement by providing a personalized 2+2 pathway that allows for a smoother transfer experience. The College of Agriculture and Food Sciences (CAFS) serves as an integral part of the history of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), as the College provides the foundation for the land-grant status. CAFS enjoys a rich educational legacy because of the tripartite land-grant concept that integrates teaching, research and outreach to prepare well-trained graduates for professions in agriculture and food sciences. The College receives the largest amount of external research funding at the University. These funds are used to provide a variety of enriched supplementary learning experiences for its students, who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees. Founded in 1982, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is a joint college serving two universities in Tallahassee: Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) and Florida State University (FSU). The College of Law’s rich tradition of excellence dates back to its original founding in 1949. Between 1954 and 1968, the College of Law graduated 57 students, many of whom have become leaders in the legal, governmental and business arenas. In 2002, the College of Law reopened in downtown Orlando as the only public law school in Central Florida. The College of Law has been fully accredited by the American Bar Association since July 2009. It serves as an attractive law school option for many reasons, including its location, affordability, diversity, state-of-the-art facility and commitment to public service. The College’s overall mission is to develop legal professionals as community leaders who are sensitive to the needs of diverse communities in Florida, the nation and the world. The College of Law also strongly supports the Legal Scholars Program (LSP) located on the main campus. LSP serves as a central location through which FAMU students may enhance their chances of gaining admission to law school. OVERVIEW
The College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health (CoPPS, IPH) began with course offerings at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1949. A legislative enactment in 1951 established the Division of Pharmacy at FAMU and the program evolved from one student to more than 600 today. It is one of the largest colleges of pharmacy in the country and the nation’s top producer of African American doctorates in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The faculty prepares students for leading roles in the practice of pharmacy, research and public health. The College has developed patents that address the treatment of AIDS, cancer and many other diseases that disproportionately impact African Americans. Additionally, the College has generated more than $21 million in committed research grants and service contracts from federal, state and local funding sources. CoPPS, IPH is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and the Council on Education for Public Health.

The integrated and rigorous curriculum of the departments making up the College opens the world to students, providing them with an expansive understanding of the arts, anthropology, the African-American experience, criminal justice, English, geography, history, humanities, law, modern languages, music, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, social work and theatre. The CSSAH is the largest college at the University and is home to a prolific faculty and diverse student body.

The School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS) is one of three health professional schools at FAMU. The school was established in recognition of the need to provide access to quality education in a group of rapidly growing health professions. The school offers five degrees at the bachelor’s level: Cardiopulmonary Science, Health Care Management, Health Informatics and Information Management and Health Science, which offers a Health Science General Concentration, Pre-Occupational Therapy Concentration and a Pre-Physical Therapy Concentration and three degrees at the graduate level: M.S. in Health Administration, M.S. in Occupational Therapy and the Doctorate in Physical Therapy. The School of Architecture and Engineering Technology (SAET) is a part of STEM and aims to provide an enlightened and enriched academic, intellectual, moral, cultural, ethical, technological, and student-centered environment. It is conducive to the development of highly qualified individuals who are prepared to serve as leaders and contributors within the fields of Architecture and Engineering Technology. The School is divided into two divisions: Division of Architecture and Division of Engineering Technology. The Division of Architecture is limited access and offers the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture. The Master of Science in Architecture – Facilities Management accredited by the Facility Management Accreditation Commission (FMAC) is also offered. The Division of Engineering Technology offers two-degree programs accredited by the Engineering and Technology Commission of the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology (ETAC-ABET) – Construction Engineering Technology and Electronic Engineering Technology. With a vision for active local, national and global engagement, the School of the Environment (SoE) offers several innovative and exciting programs. The School is a multidisciplinary unit that offers a wide range of research and educational programs in environmental sciences and environmental studies and policy to students, governmental agencies, private sector companies, communities and other organizations. SoE’s mission is to provide instruction, conduct research and engage in professional and community service on the local, national and international levels. The School facilitates technology transfer, which results in the protection of the environment and the development of remedies for existing environmental problems. A culturally diverse school, SoE is committed to providing unique multicultural experiences for its students while still maintaining its reputation for being a leader in the training of African Americans and others underrepresented in the sciences. The School remains the largest producer of Black doctorates in the environmental sciences.

As the first accredited program among the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities, the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication (SJGC) sets the standard in its field. Since its founding in 1982, SJGC consistently has received high marks for the quality of its graduates. SJGC is composed of two divisions— journalism and graphic communication. The Division of Journalism offers instruction in broadcast, print journalism, digital media and public relations. The Division of Graphic Communication offers instruction in graphic design.

The FAMU School of Nursing (SON) is the oldest continuing baccalaureate nursing program in the State of Florida and the oldest continuing baccalaureate nursing program at a historically Black institution in the United States. Established in 1904 as a hospital-based program, it became the first baccalaureate nursing program in Florida in 1936. The nursing program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.
