Nowadays, many couples are straying away from the traditional

tiered cake in favor of more personalized ideas. Cupcake towers.

Cookie rooms. Candy bars and cake pops. Mmmmm. All so good.

Before deciding what your final course will be, consider these

questions. Do you want to coordinate dessert with your theme?

Summer wedding? How about root beer floats? Or maybe you are

thinking a fall nuptial... how about roasting some s’mores . What is

your favorite sweet treat? Maybe a donut?

Let them eat cake

Sometimes, nothing beats a beautifully decorated and tasting

cake. Today’s cakes are as varied as today’s brides. Whatever you

choose will be a reflection of your personality. The average wedding

cake consists of three-tiers: 12”, 9”, and 6” or 15”,10”, and 6”. Each

serves respectively 125 and 150 people. You will find that prices

generally range from $3.50 to over $20 per slice depending on

how elaborate the nature of your cake. A supplemental sheet cake

or two in the kitchen, will cost far less per person, and the slices are

perfect. So if you are on a budget, go smaller on the tiers.

Or maybe just have cake on the top tier with decorated faux on the

bottom two tiers. No one will ever know the difference.

Groom’s Cake

Traditionally they are dark, rich, decadent and decorated to

represent the groom’s hobbies or interests.

Individual Cakes

They can be included as part of the tabletop design at the

reception, served to guests in lieu of the traditional cake, or fancily

boxed and presented to guests as a favor at the end of

the reception.

A Sweets Table

Everyone always loves a decorative showcase of small pastries and

confections to enjoy before the cake cutting ceremony.

Finding the perfect baker

Begin your search at least six to eight months before the wedding.

Look at a portfolio of cakes they have created, paying attention to

the execution of design and making sure their work is clean and

well presented. Taste samples of their cakes either by personal

appointment or on special evenings the baker may have reserved

for couples.

Always know your budget before talking to potential bakers

Know about how many guests you will need to serve. When

meeting with cake designers, visually check to make sure their

business license and health department certificates are posted.

Inquire as to the number of wedding cakes they do per month and

whether their cakes are ever frozen. If they are frozen, run, don’t

walk, to the next baker on your list.

Contracts

Make sure you nail down all the details in the contract. Here are a

few key points you want to address in the fine print:

+ Details of the cake layer shapes and dimensions + Filling and icing flavors and colors + Decorations and Cake top + Number of servings + Delivery date, time, location and set-up + If using fresh flowers - confirm who will procure and place them + Confirm that all services are included in the final contract price
