FINDING YOUR STYLE.

Does this statement sound familiar? - “I get overwhelmed looking

at all the different wedding photographers and styles …” Don’t feel

badly! This is one of the most common woes when researching

wedding photography. In the age of social media, there is a lot of

content out there. You may have heard the terms “light & airy” or

“dark & moody”. What is that all about? Picking a style simply based

on taste and preference is fine, but there are some styles that pair

better with certain types of venues. To help you figure it all out, here

is a break down these styles so you can find the perfect wedding

photographer to capture your special day.

Fine Art

Heavy in capturing details, Fine Art photography also incorporates

an element of emotion. Think less candid and more staged

for dramatic effect. Fine art wedding photography is just like

creating art; it requires a little more set up and planning on the

photographer’s part. These photographs will be ideally be more

dramatic full length shots that incorporate you and a dramatic

background.. Your wedding portraits should feel like they are

straight out of an editorial magazine. This photography pairs best

with grand dramatic posing that can be set indoors or outdoors in

the evening right before sunset or after dark.

If you want to go with that dramatic feel, you will want a venue that

brings all the drama to match your style. A historical hotel or venue

is a great option. Modern or eclectic venues like museums, wineries

and breweries also great choices.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle photography focuses on capturing genuine moments to

tell a story. Commonly called candid photography, it has more of a

natural feel when it comes to your wedding day. These images can

be full length to incorporate the space you are in or more close up

to get those special details. It keeps your day natural in feeling, but with the best lighting. Lifestyle comes into play mostly when the

bride is getting ready with her crew or if you choose to do a first

look with your partner or parent.

Lifestyle fits almost all types of venues. If you are looking for a more

natural feel that goes along with this style, a casual venue will fit

perfectly. Beaches, parks, gardens and country clubs are great

options for this style since there is usually a lot of space and options

for backgrounds.

Documentary

When looking at this type of photography you should feel as if you

are in the moment in real time. Moments that happened in a flash

are caught forever, standing still. Your photographer will be a fly on

the wall and take in everything that happens around them. Ideally

shot in natural lighting with no added flash so it is not distracting

to what is going on during the day. It is all natural and in the

moment. Your photographer will not prompt or direct you, they

are there to document the day and be invisible. This style is usually

mixed with other styles for you to be able to get those gorgeous

posed portraits. Documentary fits best with private properties

or small private beaches to be able to keep that intimate feeling.

Rustic or barn venues match very well with this style since they

are usually private to just the wedding and have a lot of space that

everyone can spread out.

Remember - it’s all about how you want to be captured! The

most important tip we can give is to talk with your potential

photographer about what you expect and how you want your

images to look. Each photographer is different and not all can

match certain styles or moods. It is also important that you get

along with you photographer, you want to feel at ease with them

and confident that they will be able to take care of you on your

special day and capture all those moments for you.
