Welcome

to HITS Ocala A brief overlook of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit in 2016 H

its Ocala is hosting a 10-week USEF-rated circuit this year. It began Ja. 19 and runs through March 20. All 10 weeks have been USEF National- or Premier-rated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 27. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4*, an official World Ranking Competition, will take place Friday, Feb. 19 during the Ocala Winter Festival. Over $400,000 was offered in the FEI Jumper division throughout the week, including $200,000 in the Nations Cup and $150,000 in the Grand Prix. The Overlook VIP Club offered a unique hospitality experience including world-class culinary presentation, complete with complimentary beer and wine service. The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the full-time Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews two years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club has been at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring.

Footing in all the Hunter Rings and Hunter Schooling Areas has been redone to match the footing in the Main Hunter Ring. Follow the progress on our Facebook page. The safety and well-being of your horses, and peace of mind for you, is our top priority. Over the past year, HITS has been at the forefront of implementing a standard Equine Health Protocol at all its shows. The Bio-Security Plan and Required Vaccination Protocol that HITS developed is being emulated across the country. Please be sure to review the requirements as printed in the prize list, and check HitsShows.com prior to your arrival to review the most up-to-date information.

With $3 million in prize money and qualifiers for all the HITS Championship classes, HITS offers something special for everyone, every week. HCD

From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff

I

t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but I just don’t get it. If, while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps notso-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 27

ESI PHOTO

Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part

of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

12 Horse Capital Digest • February 19, 2016

Grandstand direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course.

COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump. FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a

ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

HITS GRAND PRIX The HITS Grand Prix featured an international group of riders. Isabelle Lapierre of Levis, Quebec, riding her own Cescha M, was the faster of only two double clears to take home the blue. Second was Matthias Hollberg out of Middleburg, Va. (but originally from Germany), riding Olympic Dreams LLC’s Aletta. Mathew Williams, from Wellington, a two-time Olympian for the Australian team was third on Michael Dorman and Wyndmont Inc.’s Zephyr, and he was fifth aboard Valinski S for the same owner. Andre Thieme from Plau am See, Germany, was fourth on his own Cellisto. Forty-three riders contested the Grand Prix. Olaf Petersen Jr., from Muenchen, Germany, designed a course of 16 jumping efforts set at 1.50 meters. The course challenged the skills of both horse and rider with multiple striding options and wide spreads followed by balancing distances. Breathtaking Gochman’s Catch Me Named Wetherill Champion

LEXINGTON, KY. – espite facing a life-threatening illness at the beginning of the summer, Catch Me couldn’t be caught as he made an incredible comeback to be named the 2015 USHJA World Championship Hunter Rider Hunter of the Year and recipient of the WCHR Peter Wetherill Cup. The award will be presented during the 20th annual $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular Saturday, Feb. 20. “We’re so lucky to even have him back,” said Becky Gochman, owner of Catch Me. “We are just honored that Catch Me was named Hunter of the Year. We are so proud of him and proud that our sport honors true horsemen and fantastic horses.” The 9-year-old Holsteiner, was purchased by David and Becky Gochman of Palm Beach in 2015 from Lisa Cudahy of Mequon, Wisc.

Scott Stewart and Catch Me, the 2015 WCHR Hunter of the Year who will be awarded the Peter Wetherill Cup.

With Cudahy, the horse was trained by Cookie Beck and started showing in 2013. The Gochmans first saw Catch Me at the Winter Equestrian Festival Week 4 in 2015 competing in the First Year Green Working Hunter division, where he took Reserve Champion. By Week 6, the Gochmans had purchased him, and he went on to be Reserve Champion with Scott Stewart in the First Year Green Working Hunter division in Week 6, and then champion in each of the subsequent weeks he competed in the division for the remainder of the circuit (Weeks 8, 9, 11 and 12), garnering the title Circuit Champion for the division. At the Kentucky Spring show, he and Stewart won every class in the First Year Green Working Hunter division, taking Champion. Shortly after this, near-tragedy struck when Catch Me became ill and was diagnosed with botulism, a neurologic disorder that can result in paralysis and may be fatal. Under the care of Dr. Rodney Belgrave at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in Ringoes, N.J., Catch Me under-

Comeback went two months of treatment at the vet clinic. During that time, he fought hard but became very weak. Fortunately, because the disease was diagnosed and treatment begun early, Catch Me recovered and was given the all clear in late June. At this point, he began his at-home recovery, which included turn out, followed by treadmill work, and slowly back into a regular work routine. By August, he was back in the show ring in Kentucky, finishing Reserve Champion with Stewart again in the First Years. He went on to win the 2015 World Championship Hunter Rider Professional Challenge and was Champion in the First Year division with Stewart at the Capital Challenge Horse Show. The pair also garnered Reserve Champion at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show and Champion at the National Horse Show in the First Years. Of the 14 times he competed in 2015 in the First Year Green Working Hunter division, he took tricolors 12 times.

“He’s got a beautiful jump, is a beautiful mover and has a great mind,” continued Gochman. “To see him come back from this has been an incredible thing.” While his performance in the ring speaks for itself, “Snoopy” as he’s called in the barn, prefers a trail ride over ring work. Gochman notes with a smile, “The name fits him well. He has a big white face that’s always attentive, loving and sweet. He’s like a cute puppy dog in the barn.” The Peter Wetherill Cup will be presented at the 20th Annual $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular. Riders compete all week to qualify for a spot in this coveted Saturday night class. Spectators of the event may again enjoy and give back at the Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular Gala benefiting the WCHR Program and in part the USHJA Foundation Horseman’s Assistance Fund. Andrew Kocher from Lake St. Louis, Mo., and Ciana, owned by Eagle Valley Partners LLC, slipped past Williston’s Aaron Vale and Carlo, owned by Amatoville Enterprises, and Lisa Goldman of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., on Barbara Disko’s Sovereign, to win the Brook Ledge Welcome on Wednesday, Feb. 10. In what is turning out to be a battle of the speedsters, these three riders have been duking it out for the top spot in the Open Jumper classes each week of the Ocala Winter Circuit: Kocher, Vale and Goldman were all in the top three in the previous week’s $50,000 HITS Grand Prix. This class featured Petersen’s 1.40-meter course. Thirty-eight riders tackled the 13-effort course with 22 jumping clean to advance to the jump-off. Marilyn Little, of Frederick, Md., riding Venus, owned by Raylyn Farms, held the early lead with a clear jump-off round in 47.019. When Vale stepped in to the ring on Carlo, you could tell he had a plan to take the lead. “These German course designers, both Petersen and [Martin] Otto, are really making galloping tracks and I saw that it would take someone to put the gas pedal down to win. I caught a really good turn back to the in and out and caught the last fence on an open stride.” Vale stopped the clock at 44.351 to take over the lead. Next up was Goldman on the 9-year-old Sovereign. She picked up a gallop and sliced the turns, but added a stride in the last line to finish in 45.243, just behind Vale. Goldman was very pleased with her young horse: “He was fabulous! We are really starting to understand each other.” No one underestimated the fact that Kocher was still to go on. With nothing to lose, he and the 9year-old Dutch Warmblood Ciana laid it all on the line and despite a bit of a buck when landing off one fence, their time was a commanding 43.495, almost a full second faster than Vale. “She’s just a very good game horse and I liked the course,” Kocher said. “I look forward to jumping her in the Grand Prix this weekend.” HCD

disappoint as they galloped the course. They added a stride up in the opening line to accommodate Morocco’s stride which caused a few gasps as he swerved in front of the last jump, but still managed to jump clear in a time of 42.717 to take over the lead. The final contestant was Holloway and VDL Bravo S, who also fell victim to 7A for four faults in 45.417 to finish fourth. “This week’s course was smaller than last weeks, but much more technical; It suited my short-strided horse,” said Goldman. “The triple bar to the steady six to the vertical to vertical combination was really hard for the big horses but I barely had to pull on the reins. In the jump off Morocco tried to leave out a stride to the last jump and when I said you’re not leaving it out he thought we were going around it … I don’t know how he cleared that.”

ond that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner.

SHOWJUMPING 101: Jumper classes, like a Nations Cup Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for a jumping error. This is how it breaks down: A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a sec-

Though certainly not a surprise, it is still always amazing to see our in-state thoroughbred industry numbers in terms of how they fit with and relate to Florida’s economy. A recent 2013 conservative study conducted by nationally acclaimed pari-mutuel and gaming economists Cummings & Associates of horse breeds from the pari-mutuel industry based in the Sunshine State provided a handful of very impressive equine economic impacts including:

■ $1 billion per year of Economic Impact ■ More than $400 million expended per year in local salaries and payroll taxes ■ More than 12,000 jobs ■ An annual economic impact state-wide far in excess of coveted baseball spring training

Comunale Adult Jumper Classic with a fault-free 35.912-jump-off. Kelly Moore of Morriston was second in a clear 37.398 seconds on La Sonora, and Grant Anderson from New Canaan, Conn., riding Iczing, owned by Silvermine Farm, went clear for third in 41.357 seconds. The .90-meter Classic was run with an immediate jumpoff over a course designed by Otto. Riders and horses competed with seven clear first rounds and five jumping double clear. Anderson held the early lead until Boccaccio’s run, and Moore edged out Anderson at the end of the jump-off. “My trainer Allen Nabors just told me that he wanted me to show today,” said Anderson. “This is my first class in three years. My whole family, three generations, is here to watch – and my horse is a member of the family too!” HCD

elissa Rudershausen of Kennett Square, Pa., and Charmeur Ask, won the $7,500 U-Dump Jr./A-O Jumper Classic with the only clear round Saturday, Feb. 6. Mallory Vale riding Mi Phone, owned by Thinkslikeahorse, was second with a clear jumping effort but one time fault, and Carolina Ramelli Barrera was third riding Zoran de Saulieu Z with four-faults in the first round. The 1.45 meter track, designed by Martin Otto of Germany, rode according to plan for first rider Melissa Rudershausen, who clocked in clean within the time allowed. A difficult triple combination at fence 10a through 10c collected the majority of faults as the class wound down, with Vale jumping clear, but just over the time allowed to collect one time fault. Barrera had a rail in the triple with a time of 80.256 seconds for third-place. Rudershausen returned on her second horse, Ugolin Du Mont, for fourth-place with eight faults in a quick time of 76.979 seconds. Hayley Waters of Sparr, Fla., riding No Doubt owned by Chuck and Dana Waters, was fifth with eight faults in 78.416 seconds. “I think going first was an advantage. I didn’t see where the problems were on the course, so I just stuck to my plan” said Rudershausen. “I’ve had this horse for two years and this couldn’t have happened at a better time because I plan to move him up to the Grand Prix next week. This was a great setup.”

THERMAL, CALIF. – he crowd that gathered to witness the $350,000 HITS Thermal Grand Prix on Sunday, Feb. 7, of Desert Circuit Week III was in store for a spectacular display of equestrian sport. An electric atmosphere combined with supremely talented exhibitors, made for an excellent day for this top-dollar class with an exceptional ending. Thirty talented riders descended upon HITS Desert Horse Park’s Grand Prix Stadium to test the 16-jumping effort course set by Portuguese course designer Bernardo Cabral, which included tight, roll-

Chris Pratt and Edesa’s Basantos on their way to their $350,000 HITS Thermal Grand Prix win. 50 Horse Capital Digest • February 19, 2016

Week

Grand Prix tally caps Pratt’s successful run back turns, challenging bending lines and combinations that tested the navigational skill of both horse and rider. Many big names filled the Order of Go, including Olympic Gold Medalist and five-time World Cup finalist, Will Simpson of Westlake Village, Calif., and Olympian and World Cup Finals champion Rich Fellers and Flexible, owned by Harry and Mollie Champion. It would be Los Angeles equestrian Chris Pratt, who has won over $150,000 in Week III of the HITS Desert Circuit alone, and owner Eddy Sepul’s stunning Dutch Warmblood gelding, Edesa’s Basantos, who would take home the well-deserved victory. Eleven in the field produced clean rounds in the first-round of the featured class, to advance to the extremely exciting and competitive jump-off round. Eight would go double-clear, putting it all down to the fastest time to claim the title. Paul Rohrbach, of Parker, Colo., and Camerino, owned by Wells Bridge Farm Inc., was the first to return to the ring for the jump-off. An unfortunate rail at B of the mid-course triple combination to a bending line coming toward the gate resulted in four faults as they crossed the timers in 47.388. Next to vie for the title was Karl Cook, of Woodside, Calif., and Basimodo, owned by Signe Ostby. They put in the first clear round of the jump-off, clocking in at 42.972 seconds, and would keep the lead after Tiffany Sullivan and Christian Grey, owned by Haley Farms, LLC, followed with a four-fault round in 45.825 seconds. Will Simpson and E-Unanime De La Haie, owned by Monarch

International, would contend for the win next to get the crowd on its feet with a sharp turn from the vertical to the second-to-last fence, shaving time off the clock and galloping to the last fence, finishing in a blazing fast, 42.081-second clear round. Enrique Gonzalez and his own Chacna followed to put in clear round, but were too slow to take the lead from Simpson, in a 43.442second round for sixth-place. Kristin Hardin and Firestone tried the course, but four faults at B in the combination resulted in four jumping faults. The 2013 HITS Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix winner, Nayel Nassar, riding out of Encinitas, Calif., and his own Lordan, came within just a fraction of a second of Simpson’s time, crossing the marker in a clear 42.425 seconds, which would ultimately earn him third place. Mandy Porter put in an impressive jump-off round, going double clear in 44.394 on Agro Star. It was the Porter’s second time to ever show the Little Valley Farms stallion, and the round would garner them sevent -place. Tamie Phillips and her own Cat Balou joined the league of clear jump-off rounds, but were just shy of the top five with a 45.413second round. Oxford Mills, Ontario’s Jill Henselwood and Farfelu Du Printemps, owned by John Madigan, would also go clear, but could not catch Simpson’s time as they crossed the timers in 43.244 seconds, ultimately earning fifth-place. Last to go was Pratt and Edesa’s Basantos, entering the ring for one final shot at taking home the $105,000 prize purse. They flew through the course, putting the pedal to the metal from the first fence to the second to shave off time, according the Pratt’s plan: “I watched Will Simpson go and I knew I could be faster between the first two jumps. I didn’t know if I could be faster the rest of the way, but I just stayed on it and kept going as fast as I could.” As they galloped to the home-stretch vertical, every soul in the stands stood in anticipation, rooting on the pair as they soared to their victory. They clocked in at 41.140 seconds for the blue, putting Simpson in second place, Nassar in third and Cook in fourth. Edesa’s Basantos and Pratt also won the $50,000 Brook Ledge Open Welcome on Wednesday, Feb. 3, and were third in the $100,000 Purina Animal Nutrition Grand Prix on Friday, Feb. 5, capping a great week for owner Eddy Sepul. “HITS does a great job of putting together the prize money and bringing in the sponsors,” said Pratt. “It was a tough enough course … I didn’t think there would be 11 horses clearing it. It shows that the field of riders in California can get ready for a course like that.” HCD Will Simpson and E-Unanime De La Haie finishing second in the $350,000 HITS Thermal Grand Prix www.horsecapitaldigest.com 51

Humble Beginning In Florida H ITS, Inc. is a special events management company primarily focused on producing hunter/jumper horse shows. Based in upstate New York in the village of Saugerties, HITS produced its first horse show circuit in Gainesville, Fla. in 1982. Many consider Florida to be the heart of HITS shows, which were originally produced in Gainesville in the ‘80s and then moved to Ocala in the mid-‘90s to accommodate increasing numbers and the need for rings and stabling. Since then, HITS has grown into a nationwide company with world-class hunter-jumper circuits in California, Florida, Arizona, New York and Virginia. In 2002, HITS moved to Ocala’s Post Time Farm and created a show jumping haven. Boasting 450 lush acres, the show grounds welcome all levels and kinds, from short stirrup to Olympic athletes, national champion campaigners to local baby greens. HITS produces three of the richest grand prix in the world with the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix in Thermal, Calif., the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala, and the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties – all forming the Triple Crown of Show Jumping. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala is planned for March 27 which is the second jewel of the Triple Crown of show jumping. This is a fitting connection in Florida, as the state is also the birthplace of the 1978 American Triple Crown winner in thoroughbred racing, the great champion Affirmed, and served as the early training grounds for 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. The Grand Prix welcomes international talent from all corners of the world. The HITS Championship also hosts the HITS Saugerties $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix, as well as the crown jewels of the hunter discipline with the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and the Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final. In 2011, HITS Inc. expanded its event-management repertoire into endurance sports and HITS Endurance was born. Under the HITS Endurance umbrella, both HITS Triathlon Series and HITS Running Festivals present top-notch triathlon and running races throughout the U.S. The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup found a home at HITS Post Time Farm during Week V of HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. On Friday, Feb. 19, nine international teams will battle it out for global fame and their piece of a $200,000 purse. The key to HITS’ success is its strategy of producing a series of horse shows over continuous weeks, in desirable destinations, with first-class competition facilities and unmatched professional operations. Additionally, HITS offers competitive opportunities for riders in a broad range of ages and skill levels. Thomas G. Struzzieri has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of HITS since its inception. He has served on the Board of Directors of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) as well as its Competition Management Committee. He also served as chairman of USEF Zone 2. HITS has a professional, full-time staff of 35 employees, including a complete administrative staff, located at the company’s headquarters in Saugerties. Their level of experience and dedication guarantees superior execution of the details of all HITS horse shows. HCD

FARM

Spreading the Manure

A

s 2016 begins and farm chores continue as usual, it’s always important to reeducate oneself about practices that have been done the same way for years. New improvements to old practices can make big differences for the farm, horses, the amount of effort and money spent and for protection of the water and environment. Spreading horse manure/spent bedding is a practice that has been utilized for years as a means of managing the farm’s manure. Although ideal for manure be fully composted prior to spreading, fresh manure and spent bedding continue to be spread, so careful considerations can help improve this practice. Use how, where, why and when questions to help spreading be its best. Perhaps the first and most important question to ask oneself is, “does the farm have enough land to spread correctly?” One must first consider HOW manure can be spread in such a way that it won’t negatively affect pasture grass, neighboring properties or cause potential nutrient leaching into ground and surface waters. If lacking enough spreadable acres, consider those neighboring properties as potential spreading areas. For example, if using Bahia grass as bedding, neighboring cattle farms often welcome the spreading as a supplemental feed for the cattle; they will literally run after the spreader to get the Bahia bedding/manure. Crop farmers will also often allow spreading on their land during certain times of the year. Ideally, manure will get spread on a field just heavy enough to help pastures or crops grow and no more. When too much manure is applied, nutrients can seep down and pollute ground water and stifle grass. For this reason, rotating pastures where manure is spread is critical to help grasses and water. WHERE to spread is another important consideration: observe the slope and layout of the property. To avoid run-off and leaching, manure should not be spread too close to any waterways (200 feet away), nor should it be spread in areas with too great a slope. If the property features prohibit safe spreading, careful storage and removal is recommended. WHY spread composted manure versus fresh manure? Two of the biggest negatives of fresh spreading are 54 Horse Capital Digest • February 19, 2016

parasites and increased weed growth. If spreading uncomposted manure, internal parasites haven’t been killed, allowing for pasture soil and/or water infestation. Regardless the hay quality, weeds can be contained in the bales. Consumed weed seeds then go completely undigested through the horse, ultimately getting deposited in spread manure, creating a perfect growth situation for weeds to proliferate. Composting manure can control both effectively because temperatures needed for proper composting kill internal parasites and up to 90% weed seeds. WHEN? Spring or fall are often the best spreading times so manure nutrients can be best utilized by grasses and other plants, depending on the grass/crop. Ever wonder why the pastures sometimes look yellow after spreading? Interestingly, spreading fresh manure often doesn’t allow all nutrients (N) in the manure to be available for grass/plant use. High carbon amounts in bedding cause nitrogen to get “tied-up”, forcing tremendous amounts of nitrogen to be needed for breakdown of the shavings. Also, plant available nitrogen amounts are dependent on chemical compositions of manure, its application, and management. To increase available nitrogen ranges by almost double, manure should be worked into soil within a day versus just spreading it on top to sit idle. Lastly, be sure that spreading manure isn’t done on wet soils, as this leads to soil compaction and tearing of the top soil. Spreading composted manure is always best, but hopefully these tips will help better preserve pastures, protect the water and still manage the manure. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or your local Extension agent to learn more about spreading, or to schedule a FREE, non-regulatory farm visit. As always, keep up the good management practices! ■
