Remembering the Sunshine Millions Classic Greats
W
hen the Sunshine Classics get underway at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 16, it will mark the tenth year the Hallandale Beach track has Brock Sheridan Editor-in-Chief hosted the event since it was held exclusively for FloridaFlorida Equine Communications JOHN D. FILER PHOTO breds for the first time in 2012. This year, there will be additional enhancements for possible contenders as each of the four races—The $75,000 Sunshine Classic, the $75,000 Sunshine Sprint, the $75,000 Sunshine Turf and the $75,000 Sunshine Filly and Mare Turf—will each offer a $25,000 “Win Bonus” for horses eligible to run in the lucrative Florida Sire Stakes. Looking back at the relatively short history of the series, there have been some notable contenders in the Sunshine Classic, of which Mucho Macho Man is the most accomplished. Bred in Florida by the late John D. Rio and his wife Carole A. Rio, Mucho Macho Man is the richest of the Sunshine Classic winners with career earnings of $5,625,410 when he retired in 2014. That places him third all-time among Florida-breds behind only Skip Away with

$9,616,360 and Silver Charm’s $6,944,369. His length-and-a-half win ahead of runner-up Ron the Greek in the 2012 Sunshine Classic is the fastest in the last nine runnings as he covered the mile-and-one-eighth in 1:47.91 with Ramon Dominguez aboard. The Kathy Ritvo trainee who raced in the colors of Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Dream Team One Racing Stable also won in 2014 as the shortest priced starter during this span when he left the starting gate with jockey Gary Stevens at odds of 1-10 before winning by a half-length ahead of Joshua’s Comprise. The short odds in the 2014 running were a reflection of his victory one race prior in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic (Grade 1) at Santa Anita on Nov. 2, also with Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. A few months later at the annual Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Awards Gala in Ocala, Fla., he was honored as the 2013 Florida-bred Horse of the Year. Ron the Greek is also worth mention as Sunshine Classic winner having won the race by a record 11¼ lengths in 2013. Bred by Jack T. Hammer and trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott for Brous Stable, Wachtel Stable and Jack Hammer, Ron the Greek also ranks 15th among the all-time richest thoroughbreds with $2,769,557. The 2021 Sunshine Classic may be a rematch between Quenane and Noble Drama, who finished first and second respectively in the Classic Preview at Gulfstream Park West on Nov. 14. Should Noble Drama start, he will join Mucho Macho Man, Decaf Again, Catholic Cowboy, Mr. Jordan and Jay’s Way as the only three-time participants in the Sunshine Classic. So we hope you are able to enjoy another Florida-bred showcase event that may be another historical running of the Sunshine Classic. ■

Venezuelan Hug Embraces Sunshine Turf Preview
Florida-bred Venezuelan Hug
LAUREN KING PHOTO
In two previous tries against stakes company, Spedale Family Racing LLC’s Floridabred Venezuelan Hug failed to light the board.
But both tests were against graded stakes company when he finished sixth behind winner Decorated Invader in the Grade 2 Pennine Ridge Stakes going a mile on Belmont Park’s turf course in June and eighth in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby taken by Gufo over a mileand-a-quarter on the same course on Oct. 3. So trainer Danny Gargan let the 3-year-old son of Constitution try easier company on Nov. 21—and with good results as Venezuelan Hug won the $60,000 Sunshine Turf Preview at Gulfstream Park West. After a slow start in the Turf Preview, Venezuelan Hug was last in the field of ten 3year-olds and older and some 10 ½ lengths behind 5-2 favorite Monforte, who led by a length ahead of 75-1 longshot Hero Up and Sir Seamus at 13-1 through a quarter-mile in :23.27. However, jockey Joe Bravo remained patient down the backstretch while allowing Venezuelan Hug to creep a tiny bit closer, still eight-and-a-quarter length behind Hero Up and Sir Seamus, who together had taken the lead while finishing the half-mile in :47.73. As they moved around the far turn, Venezuelan Hug began a steady, two-wide progression past runners while Monforte regained the lead with Scraps now a half-length behind in second as they clocked six furlongs 1:11.61. Venezuelan Hug and Bravo had their momentum stopped briefly at the top of the stretch when his running lane closed ahead of him and he bumped with Max K.O. But the determined Venezuelan Hug eventually found a seam along the hedge and shot to the lead a furlong out. But the challenges continued to the final 8 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2021
compiled by Brock Sheridan strides for Venezuelan Hug as Second Mate at 13-1 made a big run on the outside, only to fall a head short and finish second as the former finished in 1:43.24 on the firm turf. Scraps, at 27-1, was less than a length farther back in third followed in order by Muggsamatic, Galleon Mast, Sassy But Smart, Monforte, Max K.O., Sir Seamus and Hero Up. “I was thinking a lot the whole race. They made us think a lot,” Bravo said. “There [were] a couple maneuvers where I wanted to go outside and I saw how they floated [wide] so I stayed in there. That’s what makes good horses, good horses. He was able to do it every time I asked him. “They were really excited about the horse,” Bravo continued. “The only concern they had was a 3-year-old running against older [horses] because most times 3-year-olds aren’t as developed as [an] older horse, and look what he did today. It really shows you this horse has the potential to grow up to be a good one. Today was my first time riding him and I can’t praise him enough and say how good he is.” Venezuelan Hug paid $9.20 as the 7-2 second choice. It was the fourth win in six starts from the Gargan barn for Venezuelan Hug, who was claimed for $40,000 by the trainer out of a third-place finish against maiden claimers in his second career start. Venezuelan Hug promptly won a maiden special weight going a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the Gulfstream Park grass for the new trainer before winning a first level, $50,000 starter allowance, optional claiming race at the same distance at Gulfstream on May 30. His next start was the unsuccessful Pennine Ridge effort before he returned to win a first level allowance race at Saratoga going a mile-and-an-eighth on the turf on Aug. 9. The Belmont Derby was his only other start before Turf Preview. Venezuelan Hug earned $35,340 for the Turf Preview victory that increased his career bankroll to $133,790 from four wins and a third in eight starts. The gray or roan colt is out of Downtown Diva, by Giant’s Causeway and he was bred in Florida by Orlyana Farm. ■
Inthewinnerscircle Completes Namesake in Juvenile Fillies Turf Live Oak Plantation homebred Inthewinnerscircle won her first race in her second career start with a length-and-one-quarter victory in the $60,000 Juvenile Fillies Turf at Gulfstream Park West Nov. 21. The Juvenile Fillies Turf Stakes featured a field of ten 2year-old fillies going a mile on the grass course listed as firm. Having similar fate at the break as Venezuelan Hug two races earlier, Inthewinnerscircle broke ninth of ten after bumping at the start with 108-1 longshot Beach Chick to her inside. As 76-1 longshot Special Inclusion led through a quarter mile in a leisurely :24.38, Inthewinnerscircle and Edgard Zayas had one horse beat coming out of the clubhouse turn. Special Inclusion continued to lead by a length-and-a-half ahead of recent maiden claiming winner Yafa through a half-mile in :48.31 while Inthewinnerscircle was still more than five lengths farther back in eighth. As the field turned for home after six furlongs in 1:13.29, Yafa took command by a half-length

Despite the slow early pace, Inthewinnerscircle was able to wear down Yafa in the stretch before drawing clear in the final 70 yards to win by a length-and-one-quarter in a final time of :1.38.70. Yafa finished second and another length-and-a-quarter ahead of Double Blessed in third. Baffert said, “He’s probably the fastest first-time starter I’ve ever trained. He ranks up there with American Pharoah and Arrogate in that freaky mode.” The stud fee for Valiant Minister remains at $3,000 for 2021. Tunwoo, by Medaglia d’Oro out of Sea Gift, by A.P. Quenane Lites Up Tote Board With Sunshine Classic Preview Victory Despite his lack of speed in previous races, IAB Stables and Walter Fralick’s Quenane and jockey Angel Arroyo shot to the lead from post three and took advantage of a speed favoring racing surface at Gulfstream Park West to win the $60,000 Sunshine Classic Preview at odds of 27-1. A field of five Florida-bred 3-yearolds and older went one mile on the main track in the Classic, which was one of five stakes for Florida-breds on the Nov. 14 program.

dini, by Bernardini, Inthewinnerscircle is trained by Mark Casse and was ridden by Edgard Zayas. “She didn’t break the cleanest, but Edgard worked out a perfect trip. He saved some ground going into the first turn, made a bit of a middle move, swung her out and she came rolling,” Casse’s South Florida assistant Nick Tomlinson said. “We’ve always thought that she had a lot of talent and she showed it today. We’ve gone into both her races feeling very confident. Her last race, unfortunately it came off the turf. She’s always been okay on the dirt but she’s a lot better on the turf. We’re very happy for the connections and very happy to get the win today.” With a fifth-place finish in an off-the-turf maiden special weight going seven furlongs at Gulstream Park West on Oct. 7, Inthewinnerscircle now has career earnings of $35,700 in her two lifetime starts. Zayas, who also rode her in her debut, had similar confidence going into the Juvenile Fillies Turf. “I picked up the mount the first time she ran and they took it off the turf, and I just felt how much class she had. I came back and told Nick, ‘I think this is a good filly; she’s just asking for turf,’” Zayas said. “They brought her back in the stake and I was kind of surprised that they did that but I guess they thought the same thing that I did. She’s a pretty good filly. She had everything going her way. She had a beautiful trip. I just rode her like a good horse and she came out with the win.” She paid $13.40 as the 11-2 fourth choice. ■

venile Fillies Sprint by six-and-three-quarters lengths on Nov. 14. The Juvenile Fillies Sprint was run at six-and-a-half furlongs on the still sloppy and sealed main track and featured a field of six Florida-bred 2-year-old fillies. Although Shea D Summer was on the opposite end of the odds board as Quenane, she and jockey Emisael Jaramillo unintentionally used a similar strategy while leading from start to finish to win the Juvenile Fillies Sprint by nearly seven lengths. Shea D Summer appeared in control while leading by a halflength ahead of Briella in second and posting quarter-mile splits in a measured :22.09 and :44.73. She extended that lead with every stride down the stretch to win in 1:17.09 with Briella second and five-and-a-half lengths better than Sky Proposal in third with Special Princess, Royal Habibi and Speedy Fire completing the order of finish. “I didn’t want to be on the lead, but it just worked out that way the way the track was. I guess she was the best horse of the day,” said trainer Carlos David, who had contemplated sending Shea D Summer to Keeneland for the Songbird Stakes on the Breeders’ Cup undercard. “Moving forward with her, we’ll see how she comes out of the race. She was breathing pretty hard after running in 1:10, out in 1:17. She gave it her all. I’ll give her 30 days and see what’s in store for her at the Championship Meet at Gulfstream.” In her only other career start, Shea D Summer defeated state-bred fillies under maiden
special weight conditions going six furlongs at Gulfstream Park West on Oct. 7. With the $36,828 winner’s check, the dark brown filly increased her earnings to $58,428 for owners Shea D Boy’s Stable. Shea D Boy’s Stable purchased Shea D Summer from the Ocala Stud consignment for $35,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sale April Sale. Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, Shea D Summer is by Summer Front out of Empress of Gold, by Empire Maker. She paid $4 to win. ■
David Doubles Up in Sunshine Sprint Preview Immediately following his victory in the previous race with Shea D. Summer, trainer Carlos David won the $60,000 Sunshine Sprint Preview with Legal Deal on Nov. 14. “I’m feeling blessed, thankful. I have an amazing team,” said the 37-year-old native of Cali, Columbia, who emigrated to the U.S. at age 16. “Two in one day—I have no words for that. It’s my third year of training, so I’m more than thankful to have the team and the horses and the people backing me up.” The Sprint Preview featured six Floridabred 3-year-olds and older going six furlongs on the dirt. Although Legal Deal did not win in gateto-wire fashion, the bay gelding was within a length-and-a-half of frontrunner As Seen On Tv after a first quarter-mile in a quick :21.71 with 8-5 favorite Shivaree between the two in second. Shivaree moved up to challenge As Seen On Tv as they ran around the far turn followed closely by Legal Deal and Jackson in third after a half-mile in :44.30. Quenane, whose last victory came Feb. 17 at Gulfstream Park when the 6-year-old gelding won the $50,000 Rough and Ready starter stakes in come-from-behind fashion, had a one-length lead on Red Crescent in second and Debbie’s Passion in third as he completed the first quarter-mile in a pedestrian like :24.40. As they raced down the backstretch, Red Crescent moved to within a half-length of the lead as Debbie’s Passion stalked them in third and finished the first half-mile in :47.75. But Quenane rejected the challenge and extended his lead back to a length ahead of Red Crescent turning for home after a 1:11.92 six furlongs before drawing clear by two-andhalf lengths as 6-5 favorite Noble Drama began to threaten on the outside. Quenane held on to a one-length margin under the finish line in 1:37.04 on the sloppy and sealed track. Noble Drama was second and two-and-three-quarters lengths ahead of Debbie’s Passion in third. They were followed by Garter and Tie in fourth and Red Crescent in fifth. Trained by Tamara Levy, Quenane earned $37,200 to increase his career earnings to $300,649 with a record of 13 wins in 47 starts. Levy claimed Quenane for $6,250 as a 3-year-old out of a third-place finish July 9, 2017 in what was his 10th start. “He’s never won gate to wire in his career. He knows the pace, he’s an older horse. He knows where the wire is. He knows the job, so you’ve got to kind of let him decide. Sometimes he knows best,” Levy said. “Angel did a terrific job today. “Noble Drama is in terrific form and Red Crescent won this race last year, and so far Quenane, in keeping company with them over the summer, really hadn’t been effective with them and faced some challenges when running against them. Not to slight Quenane—he’s a very good horse and he’s exceeded our expectations of him time and time again. If he can work it out and find away, he’ll get it done.” Quenane is by Algorithms out of Awesome Powers, by Awesome Again and he was bred in Florida by P & G Stables LLC. He paid $57.20 to win. ■

In Memorium Longtime Owner-Breeder Frank Generazio Jr. Dies at 91 Frank Generazio Jr., a former stakes-winning trainer who along with his wife, Patricia, became a prominent owner and breeder, died Nov. 14 in Florida after battling a number of health issues, according to trainer Christophe Clement. He was 91. According to Equibase statistics, Generazio won 370 races in a 16-year training career that spanned 1991-2006. He campaigned several stakes winners, including graded-winners Unreal Turn, Concorde’s Gold and Play It Again Stan. Among Generazio’s bevy of listed stakes winners was the mare Pure Disco, who won six stakes—many for trainer Tony Wilson—and who produced Florida-bred Pure Sensation, an 11-time stakes winner and earner of $2 million for the Generazios as owner-breeder. Pure Sensation and Disco Partner made up a tag-team of stakes-winning state-bred turf sprinters that the Generazios campaigned with Clement. In the Grade 3 Jaipur in 2016 at Belmont Park, Pure Sensation beat Disco Partner by a neck. The Generazios also bred and campaigned for most of her career the Grade 1-winning mare Discreet Marq, who earned more than $1 million. The Generazios most accomplished runner was Florida-bred Presious Passion, a three-time Grade 1 winner who finished second in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). Presious Passion, a speedball trained by Mary Hartmann, won 14 of 52 starts and earned more than $2.6 million. In a 2016 interview with Andy Serling of the New York Racing Association, Generazio said he first got involved in racing when, at a birthday party for his father, he was one of eight people who put up $10,000 to claim horses to race primarily at Suffolk Downs, near where the Generazios lived. In 1982, the Generazios purchased a yearling for $27,000 who eventually became Concorde Bound. The gray son of Super Concorde won 11 of 26 starts and was a graded-stakes winner and started what would become a prosperous breeding operation for the Generazios. Though the horses they raced ran in the name of Patricia Generazio, Frank’s wife of more than 50 years, the two were equally involved, according to Clement. ■ first career start against stakes company after graduating from a first level, $16,000 optional claiming victory over six-and-a-half furlongs at Gulfstream Park West on Oct. 25. Windylea Farm LLC’s Thissmytime ($11) relished the sloppy going while registering an easy victory in the Sunshine Filly and Mare Preview at Gulfstream Park West on Nov. 22. Like Big Thorn, Thissmytime was a maintrack-only entrant in the seven-furlong race that was originally scheduled for seven-and-ahalf furlongs on turf. Ridden by Joe Bravo, who captured the $60,000 Sunshine Turf Preview, Thissmytime closely tracked pacesetter Picara, who showed the way into the far turn after running the first quarter of a mile in :22.45. Thissmytime moved to the lead entering the turn into the homestretch during a :44.45 half-mile and drew off powerfully and comfortably to register her first stakes victory. The seven-furlong Juvenile Turf for Florida-bred 2-year-olds, was originally scheduled to be run at a mile on the turf course. Big Thorn, a main-track-only entrant who had broken his maiden by five lengths in his previous start, raced in third behind dueling pacesetters Hot Blooded and Fulmini, who put up fractions of :22.99 and :45.77 for the first half-mile. Jockey Paco Lopez made a three-wide sweep to the lead leaving the turn into the homestretch aboard the home-bred colt, who drew off to a notch a four-and-ahalf-length victory. Fulmini, who was ridden by Edgard Zayas, finished second, nine-and-a-quarter lengths clear of Castle King in third. Big Thorn, the 2-1 favorite, ran seven furlongs in 1:23.23 and paid $8.60. Mark Casse became the 34th trainer in thoroughbred racing history to win 3000 races Nov. 19 when Live Oak Plantation’s Souper Watson scored a decisive lengthand-three-quarters victory in the third race at GulfMark Casse stream Park West. The 59-year-old native of Indiana, who was elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame earlier this year, watched the milestone win on TV from his Ocala, Fla., farm. “It feels good. I watched it with my son, Colby, and we gave each other high-fives and celebrated,” Casse said. ‘I’m happy to be able to do it for [Live Oak Plantation’s] Mrs. [Charlotte] Weber.” Nick Tomlinson, Casse’s South Floridabased assistant trainer, saddled Souper Watson, who graduated under jockey Miguel Vasquez while coming off a six-and-a-halfmonth layoff in the seven-and-a-half-furlong maiden special weight race on turf. Souper Watson returned $17 on a $2 win ticket. “[Training] is something I’ve just wanted to do my entire life. Milestones mean a lot. This has made me think back over the years,” Casse said. Souper Watson entered the race off a sixthplace finish at Gulfstream Park in an April 25 maiden special weight event that has turned out to be a mega key race. All eight of the 3-yearold son of Ghostzapper’s rivals have gone on to graduate, including four next-out winners. Casse took out his trainer’s license at the age of 17 in Massachusetts. He saddled his first career winner, Joe’s Coming, in 1979 at Keeneland and his first graded-stakes winner in 1984 when winning the Jamaica (G3) at Belmont Park with Raja’s Shark. A 12-time Sovereign Award winner, Casse’s many highlights include saddling winners in the 2019 Preakness (War of Will) and 2019 Belmont (Sir Winston) and training two-time champion

Poppy’s Pride Wins Third Straight Stakes in Inaugural Also takes Florida Sire Stakes “Win Only” Bonus Gilbert and Marilyn Campbell’s Stonehedge LLC-homebred Poppy’s Pride was not the fastest from the starting gate but scampered to the lead shortly thereafter on his way to winning the $100,000 Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs as the 6-5 favorite on Dec. 5. The Florida-bred gelding and jockey Samy Camacho started a bit slow from the inside post one in the six furlong Inaugural
as 30-1 longshot Thealligatorhunter darted from post four to take a momentary lead. But Poppy’s Pride shot to the front before the field of six juveniles reached the main track and promptly put a three length margin between himself and Arindel’s multiple stakesplaced Gatsby in second before clicking off a quarter-mile in a blazing :21.89. However, Camacho was able to coax Poppy’s Pride into a more subtle pace while moving towards the far curve as Gatsby and jockey Daniel Centeno edged closer while leaving the others some three lengths in arrears. Gatsby made a run at Poppy’s Pride turning for home as they finished a half-mile in :44.70 but was never able to get within a length of the leader as 9-2 fourth choice Al Heyday had rallied from fifth to challenge for second. However, Poppy’s Pride found another gear with Camacho’s urging at the top of the stretch and accelerated away to another threelength lead ahead of Gatsby and Al Heyday, who were now fighting each other for second. Poppy’s Pride continued on to win by two-and-three-quarters lengths ahead of Al Heyday in second with Thealligatorhunter finishing another half-length farther back in third. The quick final time of 1:10.05 on the fast track was just .73 of a second off of the stakes record as Gatsby, Arrest Me Red and Tapsasional completed the order of finish. It was the third consecutive stakes victory and fourth straight overall for Poppy’s Pride who had most recently defeated Gatsby by a length-and-a-half in the $60,000 Juvenile Sprint Stakes over a sloppy and sealed sixand-a-half furlongs at Gulfstream Park West on Nov. 14. Kenneth LeJeune July 13, 1960 – December 4, 2020
A Wonderful Ride Ken Lejeune died at home on Friday, Dec. 4 after a brief illness. In his 40-plus year career, he was a jockey, trainer, bloodstock agent, and all things in between; but always a fan. He quietly went about his business; no advertisements, no parties, rarely a mention in the trade papers, that wasn’t his thing. His involvement in horseracing reached far and wide. He rode races for several years, sometimes away from home for months, other times dragging the family along—hotel to hotel. After we moved to Ocala, he started breaking thoroughbreds for various farms, the first being for Fred Hooper, where he was a regular rider of the famed Florida-bred Precisionist. When race riding ended, he dreamed of training, and buying horses. He enjoyed helping others in the business, and that’s where he spent most of any profit. He partnered in the early 2000’s on a few cheap horses, one, which he bought as a field buddy for $1,300, became my namesake Carey’s Gold—who fell just short of sweeping the Florida Stallion Stakes circa in 2001 when he won a division of both the Florida Stallion Stakes Dr. Fager and the Florida Stallion Stakes Affirmed. New York-trainer Gary Contessa was the first prominent trainer to see talent in Ken’s horsemanship, and soon Kenneth was in business, in a big way. Over the years, he had the good fortune of finding, or developing some of the best; Peace Rules, Divine Park, Genuine Devotion, Anne’s Beauty, Bay to Bay, Clearly Now, Flip Cup, and more recently, Totally Boss, Gufo, Mo Forza, and untold others I’m sure I’ve forgotten. He was a true Cajun, and he never left his roots. He enjoyed fishing in the Gulf, a few cold beers at the end of the day, and a stop at the farm to check on the horses. He found total happiness in sitting on his pony and watching his charges. His faithful dog Sissy, always following behind, logging miles every day to keep up with him. He adored, and was so proud of our children, John and Piper—and I’m sure bent everyone’s ear to speak of their success. They, in turn, adored him, and I am proud to say inherited a strong work ethic, humble gratitude, and a commitment of service to others. To those who believed in him, I thank you... you allowed him to earn a living in a sport that he loved. For almost 40 years, I tagged along for the wonderful ride. ■ —Carey LeJeune a mile-and-three-sixteenths, offers a $1 mil- 2019 to eliminate Lasix in all graded stakes lion purse. 1/ST entirely provides the $4 mil- races in 2021. lion total purse contribution. Florida-breds traditionally are not shy in taking on all comers in both open and restricted company so we want to reward and incentivize our Florida-breds to compete and win at the highest Gulfstream race levels. It’s all about supporting and promoting some of the best racing in the country for the greater good of the entire Florida thoroughbred industry, including breeders, owners and trainers during these challenging and somewhat uncertain times in our world.” “The Florida breeding program and the Florida Sire Stakes are important parts of the racing product at Gulfstream Park,” the track’s vice president of racing Mike Lakow said. “The FTBOA recognizes the national significance of the Championship Meet stakes schedule and we are delighted with their decision to supplement these purses and support the races through the entry box.” Florida Sire Stakes horses will have additional money to run for when the track presents the Sunshine Classic, their annual showcase for Florida-breds during the Championship Meet on Jan. 16.

t takes both talent and long-term racing luck to be named a Florida-bred Old Warrior. The annual prestigious badge of honor is only awarded to a Florida-bred who is at least 7years-old and has won at least one black-type stakes race on the season. Thanks to the rigors of horse racing and fickle Lady Luck, this is not an easy task to accomplish. But year after year, a select few Floridabreds prove to be up to the challenge and garner their Old Warriors badge. In 2020, the elite Old Warriors group included Grade 1 multi-millionaire stakes-winner Starship Jubilee and elder statesman stakes winner Pay Any Price, who made his fourth consecutive appearance in the club. Those two were joined by stakes winners Extravagant Kid and Faction Cat, who were newcomers to the club. Here’s a look at their outstanding seasons, through Dec. 7, 2020.

The latter included 2017, 2018 and 2019 champion female turf horse. In 2019, she was also named the Canadian Horse of the Year. Starship Jubilee proved once again that those accolades were well-deserved as she rallied five-wide to win the Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes (G1) by a length over fellow Florida-bred March to the Arch. Proving that things can get better with age, Extravagant Kid was a solid racehorse for his first three seasons but became a black-type stakes winner as a 5-year-old in 2018. He has won at least one stakes every subsequent season and in 2020 that earned him entry into the Old Warriors club as a 7-year-old. Raced by DARRS Inc., who claimed him for $62,500 from owner Frank Vicino’s Vinco Racing Stables Inc., in January of 2018, Extravagant Kid posted his sixth career stakes win and first of the 2020 season in the Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes on Jan. 18 at Gulfstream Park. The Brendan Walsh trainee bested Lady’s Island by two-andthree-quarter lengths with Jackson third. Winning time for the six-furlongs was a handy 1:10.04. Showing his versatility, Extravagant Kid would later be graded stakes-placed twice in turf events. On Sept. 4, the Kiss the Kid gelding was second to Diamond Oops in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs. Then on Oct. 3, he was second to Leinstar in the Woodford Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. Extravagant Kid wrapped up his season with a good fourth to Glass Slippers (GB) in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) on Nov. 7 at Keeneland. He banked $224,996 on the season. Early discovery of problems along with proper treatment and monitoring are key By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS
S
ome mares develop problems during pregnancy that put the fetus at risk for abortion or premature delivery. Chances for foal survival can often be improved if the problem is discovered early and the mare given proper treatment and monitoring. MARES AT RISK
Peter Sheerin, DVM (Nandi Veterinary Associates, New Freedom, Pennsylvania) says most of the mares that get monitored as a high risk pregnancy are mares that have placentitis or have had placentitis in the past. “If they’ve had this problem before, there is more than 50% likelihood they will have it again,” he says. Other mares that should be monitored are mares that had uterine artery bleeds in the past, or surgery—whether colic surgery or something musculoskeletal. “They also need to be monitored because there is always some stress associated with surgery,” he says. The history of the mare would be a major factor. If the mare had a uterine torsion during pregnancy that had to be corrected, she would become high risk and need monitoring because of potential damage to the uterus. “When it’s twisted, the blood supply is compromised and the uterine tissues tend to get more edematous. After the torsion is corrected—either surgically or mechanically by rolling the mare—she would be in the high risk category and we’d want to monitor the fetus,” he explains.

“If the mare had colic surgery, depending on how recently, we worry about the integrity of that abdominal incision. Stress and pressure during labor may compromise it. The main thing is how well healed it is. Obviously the
Older mares in their late teens or early 20’s that have never been bred before and are carrying their first foal, or any older mare, should also be monitored. “Older mares are at higher risk to have uterine artery bleeds, even if they haven’t had a lot of foals. The arteries become more brittle, and may rupture easier,” says Sheerin. Any mare that has had health problems or some chronic problem would also be high risk. “This would include mares that are currently foundered or having episodes with laminitis. The stress and pain from any health problem could be a risk factor. “A foundered mare may be uncomfortable standing up and may be lying down all the time. We worry about the impact that might have on blood flow to the uterus, and how that might impact the fetus,” he says.

longer it’s been since the surgery, the less risk there might be. If surgery was recent, those mares would likely need to wear a belly band to help support that incision. There are commercial belly bands available, to try to hold everything together while she’s foaling,” says Sheerin. Any mare with a musculoskeletal problem would also be considered high risk. “If she is unsound or has bad stifles, for instance, she may have trouble getting up and down, especially as she gets heavier in foal. She may not want to lie down to foal (and you’d need to be there in case she foals standing up) and if she does lie down she might not be able to get up,” he says.
MONITORING
“For basic monitoring, the most common method is ultrasound, either trans-rectal or transabdominal, and this will depend on the stage of pregnancy and what you are looking for,” he says. In some cases, especially with placentitis, the veterinarian will pull blood samples to look at progesterone levels and total estrogen and look for changes. If these are out of the normal range, and there’s a rise or fall in those values, depending on the hormones, this may be indicative of an impending problem. As the pregnancy gets farther along, the veterinarian can also check fetal heart rate. “Some people also look at fetal activity, but this isn’t always a reliable indicator of the foal’s health and status. Some foals will be sleeping deeply when you are palpating, and they don’t move at all. Then you ultrasound them, and everything is as it should be, and the heart rate is in the normal range. But when that fetus isn’t moving at all, it can be worrisome to the person doing the examination,” says Sheerin. Sometimes fetal fluid is checked, but this is not commonly done except in research. “Monitoring changes in the fluid, looking at cytokines and some of the changes in different hormones have been done in research with placentitis, for example, but it’s not something we do in horses on a regular basis, compared to what is done in humans.”

SIGNS OF PROBLEMS
30 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2021
“If the mare is being monitored, placental thickness can be measured. If it is excessive for her stage of pregnancy this tells us there is inflammation in the placental tissue. In that situation we’d need to treat the mare appropriately. The true measure of placentitis can’t be done
however until after she foals and then you can examine the placenta histologically,” says Sheerin. “Many cases we’ve looked at and called placentitis may not be true placentitis but we know there is something abnormal going on because the placenta is abnormally thickened. In many of those cases, however, if we can get the mare to term and she foals and the foal is normal, people don’t worry about doing histology on the placenta. We have a live foal, and that’s the important thing,” he says. Other signs of trouble would be vaginal discharge or the mare bagging up too soon. “If a mare is showing these signs, we’d do a physical exam. If there’s a discharge we culture the discharge and see what the appropriate antibiotic might be,” he explains. “We would do a trans-rectal ultrasound, measure the placental thickness, and see if there is any separation of the placenta from the uterus, palpate the cervix and make sure it is still tight, etc.” If it isn’t, there is a chance the mare might foal prematurely or abort. The ultrasound will also show whether fetal fluids are clear or if there is a lot of debris floating around. “This will change over time, with a normal pregnancy. As the mare gets later in pregnancy there will be more debris floating around; instead being clear (black on the ultrasound) there will be black with some gray flecks floating around. A certain amount of that is normal but an excessive amount would be abnormal,” he says. The examination would also include pulling a blood sample. “We do a CBC (complete blood count) and potentially send the sample to a lab to check the levels of progesterone and total estrogens. Depending on the geographic area we might also check for a lepto titer,” says Sheerin. If the fetus is compromised because of disease, the mare may be at risk for abortion.

“If there is vaginal discharge and we do a culture, when we get the results we start the mare on the appropriate antibiotics. Things to keep in mind include what the organism is and what it would be susceptible to in terms of antibiotics. We also make sure that the antibiotics if there is too much we’re choosing are stress to the fetus, this will induce early ones that will cross the maturation. The thing we worry about, placental barrier. Some of the drugs we use do however, when a foal comes early, is the not cross the placenta lungs being mature enough when the and you won’t be able foal is born. —Dr. Peter Sheerin to reach the source of the infection.” These mares are generally put on flunixin (Banamine) to decrease inflammation. “We also put them on a double dose of Regumate to help decrease uterine contractions. This might help prevent an abortion or premature foaling,” he explains. If the foal has a chance to be born healthy and not

too early, you want the mare to hang onto the pregnancy as long as possible. “The longer it stays in the oven, the better off it will be,” he says. “In some cases if there is too much stress to the fetus, this will induce early maturation (the foal will speed up final development, to be more ready for birth). The thing we worry about, however, when a foal comes early, is the lungs being mature enough when the foal is born. In humans when it looks like the baby might be born a little too early, we can give the mother corticosteroids, which will cross the placenta and help induce maturation in the human fetus. In the horse, however, corticosteroids don’t cross the placenta as readily, so we can’t induce that maturity. This is why we want the foal to stay in the uterus as long as possible,” says Sheerin. “If the foal does come early and has been stressed, the lung function (if we are fortunate) has been induced and somewhat mature, but the other thing we worry about is the bones, and whether they are mature enough to bear weight,” he says. ■

■ Editor’s Note: If you would like an English translation of this column, please contact Brock Sheridan, Editor-in-Chief at 352.732.8858 or email at: bsheridan@ftboa.com

42 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2021
Horses and the love for the scenic beauty of Marion County brought a diverse group of more than 100 large and small landowners, developers, realtors and elected officials to HFF’s first Conservation Summit on Nov. 19 at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club. The purpose of the summit was to inspire preservation of the horse farms and agricultural lands that are fundamental to Marion County’s global brand as the Horse Capital of the World®, a registered trademark of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ & Owners’ Association which befits the area. Summit speakers discussed practical ways to preserve farmland that benefits landowners and also made several suggestions on how to balance economic development and growth while retaining the sense of place that the iconic horse farms and agricultural lands bring to the area. HFF outlined next steps shortly after the Summit including: A conservation easement outreach project with land trust partner Alachua Conservation Trust; a quality of Life survey on a countywide basis with local partners; a follow-up workshop in the spring of 2021 about Conservation Easements, just for landowners; a meeting with elected officials to discuss how to add some new tools in the county’s comprehensive plan to protect the Farmland Preservation Area and setting a goal for permanent farmland conservation in the Farmland Preservation Area. HFF thanked sponsors including Brook Ledge Horse Transportation, FTBOA, Ocala Horse Properties, Showcase Properties of Central Florida, Tri-Eagle Sales, Newport Hay and Dillon Video among others. ■
