Sahara Sky Repeats With

Florida-bred Sahara Sky

Just more than 24 hours before being named the Florida-bred Champion Sprinter of 2013 by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association at their annual

Awards Banquet and Gala, Sahara Sky stepped on the track at Santa Anita Park in Southern California to defend his title in the Grade 2 San Carlos Handicap on Mar. 9.

The San Carlos, one of three graded stakes victories for Sahara Sky last year, is run over seven furlongs on the main track and this year featured a field of 10 older horses including Malibu Stakes (G1) and Strub Stakes (G1) winner Shakin It Up, the 7-5 favorite; and fellow Florida-bred Wild Dude, a winner of three straight including the Palos Verdes Stakes (G2) in his last race. Ridden by Joel Rosario for trainer and co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer, Sahara Sky broke well from the rail but was allowed to settle far back in the pack while California Cup Sprint winner Big Macher went to the early lead with longshot Cyclometer and Wild Dude just off of them in third. After a quarter mile in :22.72, Big Macher continued to battle with Cyclometer and Wild Dude as Sahara raced in eighth while still saving ground. The three leaders kept at it around the far

Attractive Ride Cruises to Win in Ranson Handicap Settling a tie-breaker with rival Burnt Offering, Florida-bred Attractive Ride prevailed in wire-to-wire fashion when the 8year-old gelding won the $35,000 Ranson Handicap on Feb. 25. The six-and-a-half furlong long contest at Charles Town had a field of eight. Owned by Matthew T. Groff, Attractive Ride had split his last two races at Charles Town with fellow Florida-bred Burnt Offering. Trained by Hugh McMahon, Attractive Ride won their initial meeting by three-quarters of a length in a seven furlong, low-level 8 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

allowance/optional claiming race on Jan. 9. Burnt Offering struck back on Feb. 11, defeating Attractive Ride by three-quarters of a length in a seven furlong, low-level allowance/optional claiming race. Bred by the McKathan Brothers of Citra, Fla., the dark-bay or brown gelding by Candy Ride (ARG) out of Valid Attraction, by Valid Appeal, was making his 65th career start when he was sent to the gate as the 2-1 post time favorite with J. of all at the start, Burnt Offering broke in air and found himself playing catch-up as the pack raced past the grandstand for the first time. Just off the rail, Attractive Ride was a head in front of British invader Marchwood when he reached the two-furlong mark in :22.95. Despite his troubled start, Burnt Offering rallied well and was in third place after a quarter mile, three-and-a-half-lengths behind Marchwood (GB). Running down the backstretch and going around the far turn, Attractive Ride was able to extend his lead over Marchwood (GB) to a full length when he reached the half in :46.40. Burnt Offering was still in third; however, the Florida-bred had gained three lengths on Marchwood (GB) and was only

San Carlos Win hara Sky, Rosario said he was eventually pleased with the trip. “It was a really good ride,” Rosario said. “He was in a little bit of trouble turning for home. I had to try and find some room and as soon as someone gave me enough room, I tried to find my way through. When I asked him, he was good. He was good after all that.” Hollendorfer was also complementary of the job Rosario had done in the race. “Yes, the pace set up real well for him,” he said. “[The inside post position was of little concern] because he comes from out of it anyway. I just told Joel to help him away from there a little bit and not let him get 15 (lengths) out it. “My eyes were on Wild Dude because he was the one that was prevalent coming down the lane. I thought he was going to win, then I saw Sahara Sky come on the outside. I heard him call Zeewat and I was trying to

turn while Rosario was moving on Sahara Sky along the inside where traffic became an issue and he was forced to steady Sahara Sky. Now last with just more than a quarter-mile to run, Sahara Sky was steered to the outside in order to continue the rally. Cyclometer put a half-length lead on Big Macher around the turn but began to tire once the running began turning for home. Big Macher led for most of the way down the stretch as 38-1 Clubhouse Ride entered the fray with Sahara Sky making up ground with every stride on the outside and Wild Dude still right there as well. Approaching the wire, Sahara Sky got the lead and hit the finish in 1:20.84 and a halflength in front of Big Macher in second with Clubhouse Ride just a head farther back in the third. Wild Dude was just a nose away from the show spot in fourth. Although there was some trouble for Sa-

[Sahara Sky] won the Met Mile last year and probably that would be the point race for him this year.” The $150,000 first-place check was enough to make Sahara Sky the most recent Florida-bred millionaire, pushing his career bankroll to $1,040,680 for Hollendorfer and partner Sweetwater Stable, which is owned by Barretts Sales and Fairplex Racing general manager Kim Lloyd. Sahara Sky now has won eight of his 18 career starts with three seconds and four thirds. Sahara Sky is by Pleasant Tap and out of Seeking the Sky, by Storm Cat. He was bred in Florida by Martin Stables Inc., of Indianapolis, In. Sahara Sky paid $8.80 to win, $5 to place and $3.60 to show. would only gain a length on the Florida-bred as he cruised the final furlong and stopped the clock in 1:19.49. Golden Set took second, a half-length in front of Lightly Wound in third. Completing the order of finish were Paco Smart, Son of a Bear, The Louisiana Kid, Marchwood (GB), and Burnt Offering. Peppi Knows was scratched. As the 2-1 favorite, Attractive Ride paid mutuels of $6.00 to win, $3.20 to place, and $2.60 to show. Golden Set paid $4.00 and $3.40, while Lightly Wound returned $4.20 to show. In addition to owning the tie-breaker over Burnt Offering, Attractive Ride boosted his career earnings to $374,820. His record is now 65-17-6-9. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014 9

He is the dream of every horseman who ever dropped a slip into the claiming box: a sound horse entered into a dirt cheap race who then moves up in class all the way to stakes level and refuses to lose. Florida-bred Ribo Bobo did it again Mar. 2, scoring his 12th win in his last 13 starts when he held on for victory by a half-length in the $88,500 Caixa Electronica Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The six furlong stake for older horses had a field of five. Owned by Ron Lombardi’s Mr. Amore Stable of Mountain Lakes, N.J., Ribo Bobo has been dominant since he was claimed for $8,000 by trainer Jason Servis for the first time in January 2013. Dropped into a five-and-ahalf furlong, $6,250 claiming race in his next start, Ribo Bobo was claimed away from Mr. Amore Stables by owner Daniel C. Hurtak and trainer Donna Green. Back in for the $6,250 tag in a six furlong race at Gulfstream Park on March 8, Ribo Bobo returned to Servis and Mr. Amore Stables via the claiming box after crushing the field by over seven lengths. After three wins in three straight claiming races, it would be the last time that Ribo Bobo

Wildcat Heir out of Tigress Express, by Polish Numbers, was looking for her third career win when she was sent to the gate with Jorge Carreno in the irons for the Arizona Oaks. One More Wild Ride only had to overcome four other competitors after Awesome Dama and Florida-bred Let Her Dance scratched from the race. She was the 7-5 second choice on the tote board, just behind 6-5 favorite Lazy Daisy May and Geovanni Franco. Despite a slight bump at the start, One More Wild Ride broke well and was hustled to the front of the pack to press Jet Set Kitten and jockey David Lopez. As Jet Set Kitten pounced her way to the rail, Carreno allowed his mount to settle just off the pace on the outside in second as they rounded the clubhouse turn. Jet Set Kitten reached the two-furlong mark in :23.84, with One More Wild Ride a length back in second and Afsana and rider Anne Von Rosen a further length-and-a-half back in third. It only made sense: One More Wild Ride, a Florida-bred daughter of Wildcat Heir who made the trip from Southern California to Wildcat Country, dominated the mile-long, $35,000 Arizona Oaks at Turf Paradise on Feb. 23. The race for 3-year-old fillies at the Phoenix, Az., oval had a field of five. Making her first start off the claim for new owner/trainer Robertino Diodoro, One More Wild Ride came into the Arizona Oaks with two wins to her credit. After breaking her maiden for trainer David Vivian in a four-anda-half furlong, $32,000 claiming race at Calder Casino and Race Course on May 31, One More Wild Ride scored a two-and-aquarter length win for trainer Kristin Mulhall in a mile-long, $40,000 allowance race at Santa Anita Park on Oct. 31. Bred by Crane South, One More Wild Ride was claimed by Diodoro and Charles Garvey for $32,000 in a mile-long allowance/optional claiming race at Santa Anita on Valentine’s Day. Wild Ride was still ranging a length back in second, keeping Afsana two lengths behind her. One More Wild Ride started to creep up on the pace setter as they neared the end of the backstretch, and when it was time to bear down, the daughter of Wildcat Heir made a powerful move going around the turn to grab the lead from Jet Set Kitten. As they rounded the quarter pole in 1:12.56, One More Wild Ride was now a half-length in front of the tiring filly, while Afsana still held third a length-and-a-half back. While post time favorite Lazy Daisy May began to roll from fourth place and 11-1 longshot Idling started to make a five-wide sweep around the field from fifth place, One More Wild Ride was just getting ready to deliver her best kick. As they turned for home, Carreno and One More Wild Ride started to draw away from the pack, opening up a five length lead over Idling and Lazy Daisy May when she reached the eighth-pole in 1:25.19. From there, it was an easy hand ride for Carreno as she cruised the final furlong and stopped the clock in 1:39.10, three-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Idling and Scott Stevens. Lazy Daisy May was third, three-and-a-half lengths behind Idling. Completing the order of finish were Afsana and early pace setter Jet Set Kitten. LEGISLATIVE

UPDATE Legislation relating to gaming will certainly receive consideration this session.

Game Consideration By FTBOA Lobbyist MATT BRYAN

T

he 2014 Legislative Session opened on March 4 and ends on May 2. Legislation relating to gaming has already received considerable discussion this session. Both the House and Senate have held a series of committee hearings regarding possible rewrites of Florida’s gaming laws while also attempting to determine whether the state should expand gambling in any way. S 7050 is a draft Senate committee bill that creates a new section of the Florida Constitution to require that additional gambling, other than gambling already authorized by the Constitution or a state statute must be authorized by constitutional amendment or by legislation approved by a statewide referendum of voters. In short, any gaming expansion in Florida after this session would have to be amended into the Florida Constitution or be approved by the legislature and then approved in a statewide referendum. However, the Senate bill has not been formally introduced. The House Gaming Committee has introduced a similar measure, H 7151. S 7052 is a 453-page revision and update of all pari-mutuel and gaming laws in Florida. The bill authorizes a destination resort in Miami Dade County and a destination resort in Broward County. The bill also creates a new Department of Gaming Control overseen by a five member Gaming Control Board. The new department and board would replace the state’s existing regulation of parimutuels and gaming. The Chair of the House Gaming Committee, Rob Schenk, has filed H 1383, a less comprehensive gambling rewrite. The bill currently does not contain expanded casino operations but it does allow slot machines at two new facilities in South Florida. It also opens the door to allowing the GTARP permit located at Gulfstream to move to downtown Miami. H 1383 has been approved by the House Gaming Committee and has two more committee stops before being available for debate before the full House. 18 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

S 7054 provides an exemption from the state’s public records law for certain proprietary information submitted by applicants seeking destination resorts. We have been working diligently in Tallahassee and we continue to promote our three top issues: passage of the Genting/Gulfstream/FHBPA/FTBOA package that allows slots, cards, and simulcasting in Miami while the thoroughbred racing is run at Gulfstream; opposing decoupling for thoroughbreds; and refining the definition of horseracing. The integral piece of the Genting/Gulfstream/FHBPA/FTBOA partnership is the not-for-profit permit referenced earlier, known as GTARP. A substantial portion of the revenues generated from the racing and gaming allowed under this agreement will go into purses, breeder incentives, thoroughbred retirement, promotion of the industry, and facility improvement. The GPTARP language has not been introduced in the Senate at this time but we continue to discuss it with the Senate Gaming Committee members and expect to offer it as an amendment if the Senate bill moves forward. H 1383 does contain language that can be construed to allow the relocation of the GPTARP permit to downtown Miami. At this point in time, neither H 1383 nor S 7052 takes steps to decouple racing from gaming at thoroughbred tracks. We believe the Senate and the House recognize the negative effect this would have on our industry. Accordingly, we don’t believe decoupling will ultimately receive approval this session. Finally, H 1383 does contain a positive definition of horseracing. In the Senate, we continue to pursue a clear definition of horseracing to ensure there will only be legitimate horseracing in Florida today and in the future. I can assure you that the leadership of your organization understands the importance of shaping any potential gaming legislation favorably this session and has been engaged on these crucial issues on behalf of the industry. We will continue to keep you informed of the action in Tallahassee. ■

TAA Now Accepting Accreditation Applications From Aftercare Organizations Deadline to Apply is May 15 Lexington, KY he thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Foundation Inc. (TAA) announced that its 2014 application for accreditation has been published online and that qualified aftercare organizations are encouraged to submit an application before May 15, 2014. According to TAA’s Code of Standards (available on thoroughbredaftercare.org) accreditation status is determined after a complete review of five areas: operations, education, horse health care management, facility standards and services, adoption policies, and protocols.

T

At a minimum, organizations applying for TAA accreditation must fulfill the following six requirements: 1. The organization must be a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Service or be a registered charity in Canada. 2. The organization must have been operational for a minimum of three years. 3. The organization must house a minimum of 50% and/or a minimum of five thoroughbreds. 4. The organization must have an official euthanasia policy consistent with that of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) as detailed on http://www.aaep.org/info/horse-health?publication=849 5. The organization’s principals have never been convicted of killing, abandoning, mistreating, neglecting, abusing or otherwise committing an act of cruelty against a horse. 6. The organization has no legal proceedings pending against it or against any principal of the organization and/or persons affiliated with the organization. TAA accreditation will be revoked and funding will be discontinued if an organization provides false information in application. All organizations have a duty to notify TAA if any of these 28 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

conditions are no longer met after an application is submitted. “The American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Humane Association, among many others, have helped the TAA create a rigorous and thorough accreditation process that prioritizes one thing above all else — the welfare of retired thoroughbreds,” said TAA Vice President Madeline Auerbach. “The American Association of Equine Practitioners strongly supports the efforts of the thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance,” said AAEP President Dr. Jeff Blea. “The AAEP has worked in partnership with the TAA on the development of its Code of Standards, best practices, its application, and its site inspector documents, and we support its efforts to improve the care of thoroughbreds at rescue and retirement facilities throughout North America.” “After a lifetime of work, our magnificent thoroughbreds deserve a great retirement,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Association. “The thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has been making significant strides in raising the level of care for these magnificent animals, accrediting nearly two dozen equine aftercare organizations in just the first two years. We encourage all those doing the important work of caring for retired thoroughbreds to apply and join the growing movement of organizations committed to the highest possible standards.” Based in Lexington, Kentucky, the TAA serves as both an accrediting body for aftercare facilities that care for thoroughbreds following the conclusion of their racing careers and a fundraising body to support these approved facilities. Funded initially by seed money from Breeders’ Cup Ltd., The Jockey Club, and Keeneland Association, the TAA is composed of and supported by owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, jockeys, aftercare professionals, and other industry groups. Additional information about the TAA is available by visiting thoroughbredaftercare.org or by calling 859-224-2756. ■

On March 9, the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ & Owners’ Association held a silent and live auction for the Florida Thoroughbred Charities at the annual Horse of the Year Awards Gala. The auction raised just over $23,000 for the charity. The top selling item for $5,400 was donated by the Yankees and Jessica Steinbrenner, which were World Series tickets to every American League game. Two other live auction items included a fishing trip in the Keys along with

a vacation home stay donated by Kelly Tractor of South Florida and a VIP spot in a celebrity golf tournament held in April at Ocala National. The large silent auction also featured hospitality packages from restaurants across the state, attractions and hotels including the Westin Beach Resort in Ft Lauderdale and the Hollywood Beach Marriott. In addition there was limited edition, signed artwork by Thomas Kinkade and a photo of the great Preakness battle between Florida-bred Silver Charm, Free House and Florida-bred Captain Bodgit. Original Cocoa Beach artist Tina Powers donated three pieces featuring the faces of Native Americans and artist Robert Clark also generously donated a painting of Groupie Doll and a field of horses, all popular items amongst the bidders. Three of the auction donors, Gulfstream Park, Live Oak Stud and the Yankees/Jessica Steinbrenner, were also Platinum sponsors for the gala. “It went by far the best I've seen. We had great support from the community with donations pouring in. We also had a good mix of items to choose from. Bidding on the items was a popular part of the evening, “ said Greg Wheeler, chairman of the FTBOA charity and social committee. “I am so appreciative of our exceptional volunteers who really made this event happen. I also thank the valuable business partners and sponsors who also created this special moment.“ The Florida Thoroughbred Charities funds scholarships for college students and the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm at the Lowell Correctional Institute, along with other industry and local community programs including the Marion Cultural Alliance, the Florida Fillies, Boys and Girls Club among others. Fifteen of the 27 scholarship students were on hand to assist with the event, the silent and live auctions. The students were invited so they could learn more about how funds are raised for the scholarships they received. ■ L. DIMARCO PHOTO

The sale was rescheduled from a two-day event that was originally planned for Mar. 10-11 to a one-day auction due to rainy weather that postponed the Under Tack program on the previousThursday. After the Under Tack programs were conducted on Friday and Saturday, the sale was changed to sell all of the horses on Tuesday in order to give buyers more time to inspect potential purchases. For the first time in the history of the world renowned auction, three juvenile thoroughbreds brought more than $1 million each, with the top two bringing $1.6 million apiece while selling within minutes of each other. Hip No. 343 was the first to bring the top bid of $1.6 million.

t was a bountiful year for the Florida thoroughbred industry. Foolish Pleasure became the third Florida-bred to win the Kentucky Derby, a trio of Florida-breds garnered Eclipse Awards, and What a Pleasure became the first Florida-based stallion to top the national sire list. Foolish Pleasure, the 1974 Eclipse champion 2-year-old colt, was considered the early favorite for the 101st running of the Kentucky Derby. The Waldemar Farm-bred colt opened the season with a victory in the Flamingo Stakes, was third in the Florida Derby and then won the Wood Memorial Stakes. By What a Pleasure out of Fool-Me-Not, by Tom Fool, Foolish Pleasure lived up to high expectations and won the Kentucky Derby. With Jacinto Vasquez in the saddle, Foolish Pleasure won by nearly two lengths over Avatar with Diablo third in the 15-horse field. The Leroy Jolley trainee would finish second in both the Preakness Stakes to Master Derby and Belmont Stakes to Avatar. On July 6, Foolish Pleasure and Eclipse champion filly Ruffian met in what was billed as the Great Match Race at Belmont Park. Foolish Pleasure won, but it was an empty vicFlorida-bred tory as Ruffian broke down during the race and was later euFoolish Pleasure thanized. Foolish Pleasure closed out the season with a second in the Governor Stakes on his way to earning $716,278 on the season. Despite his stellar season, Foolish Pleasure was outvoted for champion 3-year-old colt by Wajima. It was a Florida-bred sweep of the juvenile divisions for the Eclipse Awards. Honest Pleasure was named the champion 2-year-old colt and Dearly Precious was tagged as the champion 2-year-old filly. Honest Pleasure, like Foolish Pleasure was also by What a Pleasure and bred by Waldemar Farms. Out of *Tularia, by Tulyar, Honest Pleasure was bought by Bertram Firestone for $45,000 at the 1974 Saratoga yearling sale and quickly earned back his purchase price by the end of the season. After early setbacks of bucked shins and illness, Honest Pleasure closed out the season strongly with four consecutive stakes wins. He won the Arlington-Washington Futurity at Ar46 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

lington Park, Cowdin Stakes and Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park, and Laurel Futurity at Laurel Race Course. On six wins and two seconds in eight starts, he earned $370,227. Dearly Precious racked up seven consecutive stakes wins on the way to her championship title. By Dr. Fager out of Imsodear, by Chieftain, the precocious filly was bred by Jean R. Pancoast. The $22,000 Saratoga yearling purchase was raced by R. E. Bailey and trained by Steve DiMauro. Dearly Precious’ stakes-winning skein began with a victory in the Polly Drummond Stakes at Delaware Park on May 25. She followed that with two victories in June: Fashion Stakes at Belmont Park and Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park. It was more of the same in July with a win in the Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park and Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park. She encored that with a tally in the Spinaway Stakes on Aug. 22 at Saratoga and closed out her season with a win in the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes on Sept. 6 at Arlington Park. On eight wins in nine starts, she earned $250,989 on the year. Also earning her third Eclipse Award was Fred Hooper’s amazing Susan’s Girl, who already had claimed the title of 1972 champion 3-year-old filly and 1973 champion handicap mare. In 1974, she fractured a sesamoid in the early spring and was taken out of training. She came back in 1975 at age six to have a remarkable season, becoming the sport’s first distaff millionaire and was again named the champion handicap mare. Susan’s Girl won the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park, Long Beach Handicap at Hollywood Park, Matchmaker Stakes at Atlantic City, Delaware Park Handicap at Delaware Park, Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park and Spinster Stakes at Keeneland. On the season, she posted seven wins, four seconds and four thirds to earn $361,951. By Quadrangle out of Quaze, by *Quibu, Susan’s Girl retired with career earnings of $1,251,667 on 29 wins, 14 seconds and 11 thirds in 63 starts. What a Pleasure, who stood at Waldemar Farms, was the leading national general sire and juvenile sire by progeny earnings. On the general sire list, What a Pleasure (Bold Ruler – Grey Flight, by *Mahmoud) posted progeny earnings of $2,011,878. He topped the national juvenile sire list with progeny earnings of $611,071. Florida-bred Carry Back, who won the 1961 Kentucky Derby, was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York. ■

Tampa Bay, Fla. t the start of the week prior to the Tampa Bay Derby, the connections of 3-year-old gelding Ring Weekend planned to enter him in the $100,000 Private Terms Stakes at Laurel Park, close to trainer H. Graham Motion’s Fair Hill base. What a difference five days can make. Having broken his maiden only four weeks ago at Gulfstream, Ring Weekend went wire-to-wire to win the Grade 2, $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby by three lengths from the Sam F. Davis Stakes winner, Vinceremos at Tampa Bay Downs Mar. 8. Surfing U S A ran on well to be third and Conquest Titan was fourth, followed by Matador, Cousin Stephen and the others. Daniel Centeno rode Ring Weekend, who

toured the mile-and-a-sixteenth in 1:43.71 and paid $30 as the third-longest shot in the 10-horse field. The winner, a son of Tapit-Free the Magic, by Cryptoclearance, is owned by West Point Thoroughbreds of Mount Laure,l N.J., and Vincent and Teresa Viola’s St. Elias Stable. “We were all set to go to Laurel, but Graham called me Monday – we have the kind of relationship where we both kind of test each other out – to see if either of us was strong either way,” said Terry Finley, President of West Point Thoroughbreds. “Then we got word Kiaran (McLaughlin’s) horse, Baratti, was running at Laurel, and on paper he has run faster than all these, so we decided to enter here. Funny how those things work out.” Indeed. From maiden-winner status before the race, Ring Weekend, who received his early training at Jim Crupi’s New Castle Farm in

I wouldn’t say my confidence was high, but I really “ thought he was legit. I took him to Saratoga to try to break his maiden [last August], that’s how much I liked him. —trainer Graham Motion

Ring Weekend

Ocala, Fla., has vaulted into Triple Crown consideration with the victory. Motion has no idea where he will run Ring Weekend next, but agreed it is a nice dilemma to face. “Really, I haven’t looked past today for him,” said the trainer of 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Animal Kingdom. The victory was one of two on the Festival Day 34 card for Motion, who also trains 5-year-old mare Cloud Scapes, the winner of the Grade 3, $150,000 Hillsborough Stakes on the turf. She was ridden by Erick Rodriguez. French-bred Testa Rossi, a 3-year-old filly trained by Chad Brown and ridden by past Tampa Bay Downs leading jockey Jose Lezcano, won the Grade 3, $200,000 Florida Oaks on the turf in impressive fashion and will be headed to Keeneland, perhaps for the Grade 1 Ashland. But it was Ring Weekend and five-time Tampa Bay Downs leading jockey Daniel Centeno, who won the

2009 Tampa Bay Derby on Musket Man, who stole the show before an overflow crowd of 10,359. Total allsources handle was $10,249,574.95. Ring Weekend opened up a six-length lead on the backstretch and had more than enough through the stretch to hold off Vinceremos, denying the runner-up a chance at the Tampa Bay Downs Million Dollar Derby Bonus (awarded to a horse that sweeps the Sam F. Davis, Tampa Bay Derby and Kentucky Derby). Ring Weekend earned 50 qualifying points on the road to the May 3 Kentucky Derby. “I wouldn’t say my confidence was high, but I really thought he was legit,” said Motion, who said Ring Weekend turned around after being gelded following his third start as a 2-year-old at Keeneland. “I took him to Saratoga to try to break his maiden (last August), that’s how much I liked him. “I think gelding him got his mind on the game. I just left the ride to Daniel. I knew he could take advantage of the post position because the inside was good today and told him to just make sure he broke well and to put him where he was comfortable. “I think the others kind of left him alone because they possibly didn’t consider him a legit horse and he got away with it,” Motion added. “When the jockey looks behind him that much, you feel like he has a lot left. I could never have anticipated him winning like that.” An emotional Centeno kept his composure as well as possible, but you could tell this victory was extra special. He had ridden Cousin Stephen to a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis, but when Javier Castellano came up to ride that one today, Centeno was left without a mount – until Ring Weekend entered his life. “Alan Garcia (who rode Ring Weekend in his maiden victory) is overseas today, and Daniel does a great job here at Tampa Bay Downs. When he was available, I thought we had to grab him,” Motion said. “Coming out of the inside post I had to get him to start well, but when I got to the first turn it was like he got mad at me for not letting him run,” Centeno said. “He wasn’t rank, he was just full of himself and I had to give him his head. I knew I was clear of the field and I didn’t want to get run down and I was able to get him to

RingWeekend_Florida Horse_template 3/24/14 12:50 PM Page 51

relax and save something for the stretch. “He was looking around getting into the stretch and I was getting concerned, but when he switched leads he just took off again.” Edgar Prado on Vinceremos was pleased with the Todd Pletcher-trained runner’s effort. “He did everything just right. We got good position tracking the group behind the leader,” Prado said. “He was relaxed running with other horses like he usually is and when I asked him to run, he ran past horses quickly. But the winner was gone.” FLORIDA OAKS

Testa Rossi put on a performance to marvel at in the Florida Oaks, despite starting from the extreme outside No. 12 post position. She won by three-and-a-half lengths from pace setter Istanford, with Interrupted rallying for third and Babe’s Ruler finishing fourth. Testa Rossi is owned by James Covello, Tom Coleman and Mike Doheny’s Doheny Racing Stable. She was picked out in France for the partners by bloodstock agent Nick Sallusto. Her winning time for the mile-anda-sixteenth on the lawn was 1:43.51. “Jose [Lezcano] rode a terrific race,” trainer Chad Brown said. “He was really prepared when he came to

the paddock and said he wanted to try to leave out of there and drop in a little closer this time – she’s capable of doing that now that she has run in this country a couple of times. “He said ‘If it doesn’t work out, I’ll tuck her in back, but let me try that.’ So he had a plan and it worked, and she has been training great up to the race,” Brown said. Testa Rossi finished second last fall in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in her second stateside start. “I didn’t think being in the 12 post would be a problem,” Lezcano said. “She has been working really well and even last year when we were coming from way out of it, I was sure she could stay with an honest pace. We broke really well and I was able to get over and get her to relax before we got to into the first turn. After that, it was just waiting on the leaders and keeping her out of trouble. She was very much on her own in the late run.”

This is a good filly and she showed that today. I got her “ to the front and she was going along easily without any pressure. When we hit the stretch, I didn’t think there was anything could run us down.

Testa Rossi ran down pace setter Istanford impressively, but the runner-up lost nothing by comparison. “This is a good filly and she showed that today,” said Istanford’s jockey, Joseph Rocco, Jr. “I got her to the front and she was going along easily without any pressure. When we hit the stretch, I didn’t think there was anything could run us down. When the winner came to us she dug in and did her best. It took a very good filly to beat us.” HILLSBOROUGH STAKES

Motion’s other stakes victory came with Cloud Scapes, who had also won the Grade 3, $150,000 Endeavour Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. This finish was even more exciting than that neck victory, as she ran down Waterway Run by a nose under jockey Erick Rodriguez, with favorite Riposte third. The time for the mile-and-an-eighth was 1:51.56. Cloud Scapes was bred and is owned by Josephine Abercrombie’s Pin Oak Stud.

This is really a wonderful horse; she just likes to race. “ We thought there would be more speed in the race but she handles whatever they do up front. ”

—jockey Erick Rodriguez

“She really has done well here, hasn’t she?” Abercrombie said. “We’re just delighted. We hoped a lot for her, but she’s done better than we thought she might.” “It was a tough race for her because there was no speed in here, and we knew it was going to be awkward for her,” Motion said. “We were lucky that filly (long shot Donna’s Fly Girl) slipped through on the inside so she had someone to follow, because when she is on the lead she starts looking around. “She ran a big race. Erick rides her great – she’s a little tricky to ride and he has her number now, I think. I really haven’t thought beyond this race for her, but we’ll probably step it up. I think this mare could really go on and have a big year,” Motion added. Rodriguez was ecstatic about winning another graded race on Cloud Scapes, but more so for her courageous response late when Waterway Run and Lezcano appeared to have enough to last after grabbing a brief lead. “This is really a wonderful horse; she just likes to race,” Rodriguez said. “Last time we had speed to run at and she came on when I asked. Today we were relaxed on the lead and then just off the lead, and like before she just came away when I asked. We thought there would be more speed in the race but she handles whatever they do up front.” ■

An ongoing series where The Florida Horse editor Brock Sheridan poses 10 “away from ordinary” business

10“Unordinary” With Tim Ritvo President and General Manager of The Stronach Group Name: Tim Ritvo

Title: President and General Manager

Organization: The Stronach Group

54 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

In a nutshell, describe your organization and your responsibilities? The Stronach Group is one of the world’s leading horse racetrack operators as well as one of the largest suppliers of parimutuel wagering technology. Along with Gulfstream Park racetrack properties include Santa Anita, Maryland Jockey Club, Golden Gate and Portland Meadows. Our media and technology companies include HRTV, Xpressbet, AmTote and Monarch Content Management. We’re a thoroughbred racing company. My responsibilities include overseeing The Stronach Group tracks and finding innovative ways to maximize income for owners and trainers, enhance the public’s experience at our facilities, and grow the sport of thoroughbred racing. What is one of your more fond memories to date in the Florida thoroughbred industry? I actually have several. Just recently, we handled $20 million on Fountain of Youth Day and that was quite memorable because we hadn’t done $20 million or more on any day other than Florida Derby. That told us we’re continuing to reach new fans and a wider audience. Certainly, Mucho Macho Man winning the Sunshine Millions was very memorable. And finally, I love when our

chairman, Frank Stronach, is here and the place is packed like on Fountain of Youth Day or, at this point, any Saturday. It’s just great to see his dream of making Gulfstream an entertainment destination for people of all ages realized. What specifically got you involved in the Florida thoroughbred industry? My family and I moved here in 1990. We want to settle somewhere and not move our family every year. Florida was the perfect spot. I believed then and I believe now that there’s great potential in Florida and in the Florida thoroughbred industry. I think the sport is growing and will continue to grow. What is your favorite sport outside horse racing? I’m originally from Boston so I keep track of the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins. I actually got interested in curling during the Olympics What are your favorites songs or musical artists? I like the National Anthem before the first race...and the call to post. What’s your favorite movies or television programs? I work a lot, so I watch the replay show and HRTV. I’m not

questions to a variety of Florida thoroughbred industry leaders

Questions much of a movie guy but I enjoyed Phar Lap, Boots Malone and Let It Ride. What are your favorite reads? The Daily Racing Form and The Paulick Report. What are your favorite foods? Honestly, I really enjoy the restaurants and food at Gulfstream. I think Ten Palms is great and it’s no secret the restaurants in The Village at Gulfstream Park are all excellent.

Why do you think people should breed, own and race Florida-breds? I don’t think there’s any doubt there’s tremendous upside in Florida-breds. First of all, there’s no better place to breed and raise a thoroughbred than Florida. For six months out of the year you have the best racing in Florida. You have the best weather year-round. Floridabreds can compete anywhere in the world. We also see a huge upside in the business of thoroughbred racing and breeding Florida-breds. The program for Florida-breds is only going to get better this year at Gulfstream with the inaugural running of the Florida Sire Stakes and, for the second year, the Sunshine Millions Prep, here at Gulfstream. ■

In Demand By TAMMY A GANTT he world of off-the track thoroughbred programs is growing and the connection to the hunter/jumper show circuit and other equine disciplines grows each year with these programs where it is evident that thoroughbreds are versatile and make solid performers and that the industry is promoting the sound retirement of racehorses. Here are highlights of these relatively new programs.

RETIRED RACEHORSE TRAINING PROJECT CREATES DEMAND IN SPORT HORSE MARKETPLACE

56 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

The Retired Racehorse Training Project was created in 2010 in an effort to facilitate the placement of thoroughbred ex-racehorses in second careers by increasing demand for them in the sport and recreation marketplace. Retired thoroughbred race horses are showcased as pleasure and sport horses through public events, clinics, training publications, videos and internet tools. The mission is to facilitate the placement of retired thoroughbred racehorses in second careers by educating the public about the history, distinctive characteristics, versatility of use, and appropriate care and training of the iconic American thoroughbred. RRTP hosts benefit dinners and other fundraisers to create awareness and raise funds. RRTP held an event with assistance from FTBOA on March 8 in Ocala at the world class training center, Goldmark Farm. Goldmark owner Paul Bulmahn, General Manager Todd Quast and Assistant Manager Karl Keegan honor thoroughbreds before, during and after their days on the track. Steuart Pittman owns and operates Dodon Farm where he trains horses and riders for three-day eventing, dressage and jumping.

He stands Salute The Truth, the only retired racehorse stallion in America to have evented at the advanced level. Pittman is a popular instructor and clinician both locally and nationally and is the president of RRTP. The event hosted over 100 people who learned about RRTP, participated in a charity silent auction of Robert Clark artwork and celebrated the 75th birthday of Triple Crown winning jockey Jean Cruguet. Other celebrities on hand to promote the event included Jacinto Vasquez, LeRoy Jolley and Secretariat’s exercise rider Charlie Davis. Upcoming events include a booth at the Rolex 3-Day Event April 24 through 27 in Lexington, Ky., thoroughbreds for All, April 25 in Lexington and The thoroughbred Makeover”: A Marketplace & National Symposium on Oct. 4 through 5 at Pimlico Race Course. RRTP also hosts the thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium at Pimlico Race Course annually and has received

Programs Create Demand for Off the Track Thoroughbreds the thoroughbred Charities of America Industry Service Award. Currently RRTP is publishing the first state-by-state Retired Racehorse Resource Directory. In November 2013, RRTP launched an online survey to determine how many OTTBs find new homes post racing, what they are used for in retirement, the level and age of riders who ride them, the average price of getting a retired thoroughbred and the increasing importance of non-profits who place exracehorses. The full report is available at retiredracehorsetraining.org. FIRST FLORIDA ALL THOROUGHBRED “RUN FOR THE RIBBONS HORSE SHOW SERIES” SHOWCASES OTTBS

The thoroughbred Horse Show Series, “Run for the Ribbons Horse Show” comes to Ocala, Fla., on Saturday, April 12 and May

17. The goal of the series is to create a meaningful, competitive environment for horse and rider/handler, raise the demand for offthe –track-thoroughbreds, and to help owners in expanding second career options for them. Run for the Ribbons showcases the talents and abilities of thoroughbred horses in the another stage of their careers with the world of hunter/jumper competition. The shows also include in-hand classes for thoroughbreds that are no longer able to compete under saddle. By offering a variety of classes, the series encourages and rewards those who have taken on the responsibility of caring for OTTB horses. The shows also provide a source for prospective horse buyers for their next horse by seeing what they can do.

The program also hopes to encourage trainers and owners of current racehorses to retire their horses in sound condition, knowing that there is a market by way of the thoroughbred show series. The shows are an exclusive Hunter/Jumper series for all tattooed, registered, and identifiable thoroughbreds. The series also allows a way to further the industry’s current conscientious efforts to enhance thoroughbred retirement. For information on the series and sponsorships, contact Laurine Barreira at (774) 328-1760 or runfortheribbons@gmail.com and the event coordinators encourage you to like them on Facebook at Run for the Ribbons Horse Show. The Florida thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association is a sponsor for the show.

TAKE2 BOOSTS AWARDS FOR SECOND CAREER THOROUGHBREDS

The TAKE2 Second Career thoroughbred Program Inc., unveiled in 2012 at just eight horse shows in three states, expanded rapidly in the sport horse community. Offering prize money in hunter and jumper classes restricted to thoroughbreds, TAKE2 highlight the prize lists at more than 90 top-level shows in 20 states in 2014. The program added awards for the High-Point Hunter and High-Point Jumper in 2013, with increases, with the point leaders from each division earning $2,500, a dress sheet and a tri-color sash. The jumping industry used to be filled with great thoroughbred show The 2014 schedule kicked off at Horse Shows in the Sun (HITS) in horses, like Jet Run and Idle Dice,” Take2 director Rick Violette says. “The Ocala, Fla., and will be featured at thoroughbred was king, before they got squeezed out by the European sport horse shows in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, horse. Fifteen of the 20 horses in the Hall of Fame were thoroughbreds! Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. The TAKE2 classes in Florida were held Feb. 11-16, Feb. 18 to 23, March 4 to 9 and March 11 to 16. “HITS is very happy to be part of the TAKE2 thoroughbred program,” said HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri. “As a horseman, I am thrilled to see the thoroughbred returning to the show ring; as a show manager, I am pleased to be part of a program that embraces both the exhibitor and the horse show. This series is just what the exhibitors are looking for, with year-end awards that reward them for all their hard work throughout the season.” The Florida thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association is supporting the organization by promoting the classes held locally at HITS and in the horse community. This year, the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company joined the TAKE2 team, helping to fund the program at HITS. The program is designed to highlight the success of thoroughbreds as show horses, creating more opportunities for retiring racehorses in need of second careers. It is supported by thoroughbred organizations across the U.S. The thoroughbred horsemen’s associations in several states, as well as the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, sponsored TAKE2 classes last year. Schedules are available at take2tbreds.com. “Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company is delighted to support TAKE2 with their efforts to help showcase the versatility and talent of thoroughbreds in our own backyard,” said OBS President Tom Ventura.

supported by owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, jockeys, aftercare professionals and other industry groups. Seven-figures-worth of financial grants were awarded in 2013; the first since TAA was formed in February 2012. The achievement earned the creative program an Eclipse Special Award in January which honors the extraordinary service, individual achievements in, or contributions to the sport of thoroughbred racing. The TAA is the second aftercare-related recipient, following Monique Koehler, founder of the thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, in 2009. TAA Board President Jack Wolf said, “In under two years we have successfully assembled a top-notch team and signed on supporters from across the industry, enabling us to accredit 23 thoroughbred aftercare facilities and award $1 million in grants to support the great work they are doing to care for our retired racehorses.” “The TAA has made extraordinary progress in ensuring safe and stable adoption, retraining and retirement opportunities,” said Alex Waldrop, President and CEO of the NTRA. Individual grant awards are based on a comprehensive review by the TAA Grants Committee and Board, grants are made for the ongoing care of retired thoroughbreds. 32 YEARS OF THE FLORIDA STALLION STAKES

Jackson Bend

LISA PHOTO

In its 32 years, the Florida Stallion Stakes hosted 1,532 total individual runners in 220 races and awarded over $38.9 million. Florida-breds won 217 of the races. Just like other racing triples, the Florida Stallion Stakes three race sweep is a difficult feat. In its 32 year history, only 12 horses have won all three, while 37 horses won two of three.

It’s Equine Care

By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS eg wraps/bandages are often used on sport horses and show horses to give support and/or protection to the legs, and sometimes a farrier is asked to give a client advice on proper ways to wrap a leg. Dr. Jerry Black (Wagonhound Land and Livestock Chair, Equine Science, at Colorado State University) says some wraps are used for protection—such as shipping bandages—and others are often a combination of support and protection. . For support, you need a type of bandaging that applies a mild amount of pressure. This can help keep a leg from swelling. Many people bandage their horse in the evening if it tends to stock up after a ride. Horses hauled long distances are also prone to stocking up, due to lack of activity while standing in a trailer. Some type of bandaging that puts mild pressure on the legs will prevent swelling—as well as help protect the legs if the horse is jostled around in the trailer.

“Make sure you have plenty of padding underneath the bandages, unless they are the big, fluffy type of polo wrap or some of the newer types of manufactured quilting (such as the No-Bow bandages). Bandages without some kind of quilting or leg cottons require more care in how much pressure you apply,” says Black. You can put a mild amount of

Equine Care made by J and J, that comes in big, fluffy rolls. It’s a roll-on cotton that’s elastic, so you can make a beautiful fit. Then you can put the Vetrap or Elasticon over the top, to hold everything in place,” he explains. This is a good way to layer a bandage onto the leg. “When using a pressure wrap, never end it right over a tendon. If your horse has a wound in the fetlock area, unless your veterinarian teaches you how to apply some very specialized wraps, you’d want to take that wrap all the way up to just below the knee or hock, and then take it back down under the ankle (pastern area) so you are not ending the wrap in the middle of the tendon—to avoid the potential for a bandage bow,” says Black.

* PROBLEMS CAUSED BY EXCESS PRESSURE

Pressure over a tendon can cause tendonitis and swelling. “We have seen the extreme of this problem when people don’t know how much pressure to put on those wraps (and have too much) or don’t have enough padding underneath. The horse may end up with ulcerations in the skin from lack of circulation.” The pressure cuts off blood circulation and the top layers of skin slough away—and these must be treated as wounds.

When these raw areas heal, the hair comes in white. “Horses with white hair on the back or front of the cannon region have probably at some point in their lives had a bandage too tight,” says Black. “When using any kind of stretchy bandage (and Vetrap is the one most commonly used), a good rule of thumb is that—with proper padding underneath it— you can safely stretch it about half of its maximum potential of stretch,” he explains. It should never be stretched any more than that. It’s also important that the bandages stay in place and never slide down the leg. “If they slide downward, they have the potential to bind/wrinkle and put too much pressure in certain spots, and can create pressure sores. For a nice bandage, use elastic Vetrap to hold it in place, and then use the Elasticon (adhesive stretchy material) top and bottom to help keep it in place,” says Black.

* HAVE SOMEONE SHOW YOU HOW

68 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

If you don’t know how to bandage a horse, get advice from someone who does. It helps to practice under the eye of an experienced person who has done a lot of bandaging. “Some of the best bandagers I’ve ever seen are at the racetrack, and they always learn the proper techniques as an apprentice—with guidance from someone who knows how to do it. Your veterinarian or a knowledgeable horse person (such as a trainer who bandages horses all the time) can likely show you how to do it properly. Make sure you have the padding in place and that it doesn’t slip.” ■

FARM MANAGEMENT

Rotational Grazing Methods H

ello to all. This spring we’ve had a deluge of rain to keep the soils very moist and it’s making the grass grow so fast, it’s almost scary. Great growth is really fantastic for the horses, but grass also utilizes nutrients that might otherwise leach into the ground and surface waters. Unfortunately, keeping pastures thick and healthy can become a problem without proper management, no matter how fast the growth. Last month, I discussed some strong pasture management practices, like maintaining proper grass height, fertilization and the use of a sacrifice lot, each of which goes a long way to maintain the health and vitality of the pastures. Still, other skills, like rotational grazing, can be effectively utilized. This practice alone plays a key role in allowing grass to benefit the horse, the farm’s appearance and act as an essential protective barrier for nutrient leaching. Several methods of rotational grazing can be easily incorporated and be just one more tool to use in the pasture/farm management arsenal. Continuous grazing is the classic system that allows horses to be out on one pasture for extended periods of time. Often used more than any other practice, this system works well only if the acreage is overly sufficient to handle the number of grazing animals. Continuous grazing often leads to bare spots, or entirely stripped paddocks, with weedy, uneaten areas and diminished forage growth and grass root health. Rotational grazing, done by dividing pastures and/or moving horses off and on various grazing areas into different paddocks/pastures, can go a long way to help increase the pasture grass productivity. This involves moving horses between pastures (or dividing larger pastures into smaller segments), paddocks and even into a sacrifice paddock, enabling grass times of complete rest. These rest times allow growth of the shoot and root of the grass, both of which are essential to maintaining health and vigor. Advantages to rotational systems include the ability to manage more animals on less acreage and improve the availability and quality of grass/forage. If the property has only one or a few large fields, setting up rotational grazing can be easily and

76 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

inexpensively done by simply using easy to move electric fencing. This way, larger pastures can be “spot grazed” in more complete areas, allowing the other areas of the pasture to get completely rested. Many methods can be effectively utilized and it is a bit of a learned practice, so try different schedules to determine what works best. Some options to try: rotating every month, or every week, or use a 3-day rotation, if there are enough paddocks to allow for enough benefit for the grass. Also, in some cases, horses need to be rotated before the pasture has been adequately grazed. Time on each pasture will depend largely upon the number of horses and pastures. The key to pasture productivity with any rotational grazing system is to allow for adequate rest periods so the pasture is able to recover (seven days or longer is ideal). Flexibility, depending on the season, is essential to ensure success. Resting the pasture allows forages the ability to store carbohydrates in their roots and regrow vigorously. Let’s not ever forget about the neighbors, either. When possible, utilizing a neighbor’s land for periods of time is another effective way to allow rest time for grass, especially good if your farm lacks needed acreage to effectively rotate. Regardless, rotational grazing need not be complicated. It can even be utilized if only two pastures are on the farm! Maintaining the pastures with rotational grazing is a Best Management Practice (BMPs) for farms which may work onto your property very nicely. You can contact me or your local Extension agent if you ever need any help with these, or other questions. As always, keep up the good management practices! ■

GENE’S JARGON

What’s On Your Racing by Gene Kershner

Bucket List? W

ith the 2014 racing year heating up, there’s not a better time to review your racing bucket list. For a racing fanatic like me who has been lucky enough to knock off several major bucket list items, there are still a few I’d love to cross off the list. As a turf writer who covers the both the U.S. and Canadian Triple Crowns, Saratoga and the Breeders’ Cup, you can imagine that some of the top races in North America are already covered on my list. Let’s take a look at an all-encompassing list for the average (or not-so-average) racing fan! We won’t limit the list just to track visits as there are a few accomplishments on the wagering side of the ledger we’d all like to accomplish….so here goes: 1) Attend a Triple Crown race - Sure it would be easy to list the Kentucky Derby first, but what fun would that be? The Preakness is just as fun with the infield rocking in the middle of the card with top-end acts and if you’re fortunate enough to sit in the , breeder, Turf Terrace, the views of owner or turf writer, knocking off the turf races are absolutely stupendous. A Belmont any of these items on the list would Stakes with the Triple make for a pretty good day. Crown on the line would absolutely be a must-see. 2) Attend the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe - You’ll have to brush up on your French, but there’s no bigger race in Europe than the Arc at Longchamp, just to the west of Paris. On Arc weekend alone, there are 13 Group races run, including nine Group 1’s. 3) Attend a thoroughbred auction sale - Just don’t raise your hand at the wrong time. I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had at the August Fasig-Tipton sale at Saratoga last summer. A fellow turf writer wagered on the selling prices all evening and had a blast. (Full disclosure: Mortimer won $1) 4) Cash a signer - Whether it’s a Pick-Six ticket or the Derby trifecta, cashing an IRS signer can be one of the best feelings in the world, until April 15, of course. Let’s make it at least four figures. 5) Dress up for the races at Ascot - Who doesn’t like

Whether you’re a fan

82 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2014

to get dressed up for the races? For the men, it’s the top hat that would do the trick for me. Something I have to do at least once. For the ladies, wearing your finest dress or a hat like the queen will do just nicely. How many racing websites post an actual dress code for the races? This one does specifically for both regular Ascot racedays as well as the Royal Ascot meet in mid-June. 6) Stand in the Winner’s Circle with your winning horse - Of course you need to be a horse owner, or a friend of a horse owner to get into a winner’s circle photo with the winning connections. 7) Drink an oil can at the Melbourne Cup - Since we’re doing a bit of globe-trotting, why not head down under where they drink those big beers and bet big at the Melbourne Cup. You can wager on Gai Waterhouse’s horse, too. It isn’t called “The Race That Stops a Nation” for nothing. 8) Pull the Del Mar/Saratoga double - Both tracks run concurrently in the summer, hitting both of these marquee meetings up on back-to-back weekends would be racing nirvana. You’d also gather a few frequent flyer miles to boot in addition to the cool vibe each town gives off. 9) Arlington Million Day after a Cubs game Knock off two bucket list items in one (if you’ve never been to Wrigley) and catch some awesome turf racing at one of racing’s jewels in suburban Chicago. 10) Visit the Florida breeding farms - I hear the Ocala farms are tremendous and you really can’t beat the weather. When in Rome… Whether you’re a fan, breeder, owner or turf writer, knocking off any of the above items on the list would make for a pretty good day. So, what’s on your racing bucket list? Gene Kershner is the turf writer for The Buffalo News. He has been published in The Blood-horse, QueensPlate.com and the NTRA blog. He is a member of the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Association, and tweets @EquiSpace. He is the Treasurer of the Thoroughbred Racing Fan Association, Inc. (ThoroFan), a non-profit organization.
