FLORIDA THOROUGHBRED CHARITIES is a non-profit organization and the charitable arm of the FTBOA. FTC is committed to strengthening both the industry and community through events raising funds for educational organizations in the community, groups that benefit area families, and organizations that benefit the equine industry. The FTC also provides scholarships and support to the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm at the Marion/Lowell Correctional Institutions. The farm provides characterbuilding training for inmates and prepares horses for second careers or adoption. The farm is home to celebrities Carterista and millionaire Shake You Down, both multiple graded stakes winners and Hemingway’s Key, a third place finisher in the 2006 Preakness. The Florida farm opened in 2001 and is home to over 40 horses. The Lowell Facility was the first at a women’s unit in the nation.

WILDCAT HEIR 2000 bay horse by Forest Wildcat – Penniless Heiress, by Pentelicus WILDCAT HEIR claimed the 2013 Florida Stallion of the Year crown, winning the title for the third time in his stud career. He was also the leading Florida sire in 2010 and 2011. Wildcat Heir led all Florida-based stallions by 2013 progeny earnings with $4,616,832. He was also the leading Florida sire by number of winners (107), graded stakes winners (2) and was the only Florida-based sire to be represented by a Florida-bred Grade 1 stakes winner in 2013. All earnings, stakes winners, stakes wins and win totals for Florida stallions include North American and international progeny as provided by The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc. The leading 2013 earner for Wildcat Heir was Florida-bred Grade 1 stakes winner Heir Kitty, who banked $273,472 on the season. Bred by Pedro Gonzalez and Jorge Herrera, the 3-year-old filly out of Be Silver, by Silver Buck, captured the La Brea Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita

Park. Raced by David Bernsen and Paul Makin, Heir Kitty was also second in the Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) and third in the Sweet Life Stakes. Wildcat Heir’s second-leading earner was Florida-bred Black Diamond Cat, who earned $213,050 on the season. The 6-year-old gelding out Sweet Glory, by Miswaki, posted a trio of stakes wins for owner Bluestone Thoroughbreds LLC. Black Diamond Cat won the Ponche Handicap at Calder, as well as the Housebuster Stakes and Montbrook Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Bred by Mike Eckman and Mark and Debbie Ravenscraft, Black Diamond Cat was also second in the Champali Stakes at Calder. Rounding out Wildcat Heir’s quartet of 2013 stakes winners were graded stakes winner Rainbow Heir and Florida-bred stakes winner Jewel of a Cat. Rainbow Heir, a 3year-old colt out of the Prospectors Gamble mare Rainbow Pride, captured the Jersey Shore Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park on his
way to earning $173,460. Jewel of a Cat, a 3year-old filly out of the Pentelicus mare Marbleous Routine, won a pair of stakes. Raced by J and J Stables and GSP Stables, she scored victories in the Stormy Blues Stakes at Pimlico and Coronation Stakes at Saratoga. Bred by Marty and Carol Hershe, Jewel of a Cat banked $115,155 on the season. Wildcat Heir was also represented by stakes-placed runners Angel’s Glory, Sunset Silhouette, Sweet Alice Benbow, One More Wild Ride and Heir Joe. Wildcat Heir, a Florida-bred Grade 1 stakes winner of $424,460, was bred by New Farm. He won the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G1), Icecapade Stakes and Drone Stakes. Wildcat Heir, who was also second in the Sanford Stakes (G2), is a full brother to graded stakes winner Forest Heiress and stakes winner Forest Heir. Wildcat Heir entered stud in 2006 at Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud.

WITH DISTINCTION 2001 bay horse by Storm Cat – Extravagant Woman, by Alydar WITH DISTINCTION was the 2013 leading Florida juvenile sire by progeny earnings with a total of $984,784. He was represented by 18 juvenile winners, including two stakes winners and three stakes-placed runners. With Distinction’s leading earner was Florida-bred My Brown Eyed Guy, who tallied $161,480 on the season. Out of the De Niro mare Brown Eyed Woman, the 2-yearold gelding was bred and raced by Gilbert G. Campbell. Trained by Kathleen O’Connell, My Brown Eyed Guy captured the Dr. Fager Stakes and Affirmed Stakes of the Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder. Also representing With Distinction was Florida-bred Jessethemarine, a bay colt out of the Mineshaft mare Greek Key. Bred by Dream Builder Racing LLC, Jessethemarine
won the Whirling Ash Stakes at Delaware Park and James F. Lewis III Stakes at Laurel Park. Also second in the Marylander Stakes at Laurel Park, Jessethemarine earned $133,940 for owners Manfred Roos and John Rigattieri. With Distinction was also represented by juvenile stakes-placed runners We’re All Set, Copa Del Rey and In Luv With Willie. Grade 3 stakes winner With Distinction banked $447,717 in three seasons of racing. By Storm Cat out of the Alydar mare Extravagant Woman, With Distinction won the El Conejo Handicap (G3) at Santa Anita Park. He was also stakes-placed six times, including a trio of seconds in graded stakes. With Distinction, who entered stud in 2007, stands as property of a syndicate at Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds.

Dance With Fate posted seconds in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and FrontRunner Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park. A Luck Farm to the 2013 OBS April juvenile sale, Dance With Fate was bought for $120,000 by Joseph Ciaglia Jr. Also representing Two Step Salsa were stakes-placed Purchango and Conquest Two Step. Purchango, out of the Eltish mare Pitch a Penny, earned $110,620 on a second in the In Reality Stakes and a third in the Affirmed Stakes of the Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder. Conquest Two Step, out of the Pioneering mare Homesteader, earned $45,833 and was second in the Colin Stakes at Woodbine. Millionaire graded stakes winner Two Step Salsa earned $1,104,040, winning the Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes (G3), Affirmed Handicap (G3) and Etisalat Godolphin Mile (G2). Two Step Salsa entered stud in 2010 at Manuel Andrade’s Get Away Farm.

THE 2013 NEEDLES AWARD was presented to Juvenal Diaz, who as a breeder recorded Florida-bred earnings of $844,725. As a breeder, Diaz was represented by Florida-bred graded stakes winner Regalo Mia and Florida-bred stakes winner Gentlemen’s Bet. The Needles Award was established by the FTBOA to honor Florida breeders who own small Thoroughbred operations and have made outstanding contributions to the Florida Thoroughbred industry. Regalo Mia, a 2009 filly by Sligo Bay (Ire) out of the Red Bullet mare Shake It Up, won the Orchid Stakes (G3) and Florida Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Raced by Steven Ciccarone, Regalo Mia was also second in the Bewitch Stakes (G3) at Keeneland. In but four starts on the season, she posted two wins and one second to bank $211,334. Gentlemen’s Bet, a 2009 colt by Half Ours out of the Gentlemen (Arg) mare Lady of Sun, captured the Iowa Sprint Handicap at Prairie Meadows. The well-traveled Harry Rosenblum colorbearer was also graded-stakes placed three times at three different tracks. Gentlemen’s Bet was third in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita, Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) at Saratoga and Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park. In eight starts, he tallied four wins and three thirds to earn $392,400.

ASIA EXPRESS THE 2013 JOE O’FARRELL MEMORIAL AWARD was presented to Ocala Stud, as the original consignor of Florida-bred Grade 1 stakes winner Asia Express. Also bred by Ocala Stud, Asia Express was sold for $230,000 at the 2013 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s March 2-year-olds in training sale. The 2011 colt by Henny Hughes out of Running Bobcat, by Running Stag, was purchased by Narvick International. Racing for Yukio Baba in Japan, Asia Express won the Asahi Hai Futurity (G1-JPN) at Nakayama Race Course. Undefeated in three starts on the season, Asia Express earned $858,940. The Joe O’Farrell Memorial Award is presented annually by OBS to the original consignor of the year’s best Florida-bred racehorse offered at public auction in Florida. The award is named after Joe O’Farrell, who was part of the syndicate that founded Ocala Stud in 1956 and who was a pioneer in establishing public Thoroughbred auctions in Florida.

KATHLEEN O’CONNELL was the leading Florida trainer of Florida-breds at Florida tracks by earnings ($1,623,507), wins (63) and stakes wins (7), tying with Martin D. Wolfson in the latter category. Leading the way for O’Connell was FloridaBred Scandalous Act, who swept the fillies division of the 2013 Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder. Scandalous Act won the Desert Vixen Stakes, Susan’s Girl Stakes and My Dear Girl Stakes by a combined winning total of 22 lengths. O’Connell became the first woman trainer to saddle a horse to sweep a division of the FSS. Scandalous Act, bred and raced by Gilbert G. Campbell, was named the 2013 Florida-bred champion 2-year-old filly. O’Connell came up just one race short of sweeping both divisions of the FSS. Florida-bred My Brown Eyed Guy won two legs of the open division, the Dr. Fager Stakes and Affirmed Stakes. O’Connell also saddled Florida-bred Secret Kitten to victories in the Cassidy Stakes and Catcharisingstar Stakes at Calder. Both My Brown Eyed Guy and Secret Kitten are also Campbell homebreds.

Owned by Farnsworth Stables, Golden Mystery won the Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3) and Florida Sunshine Millions Fillies & Mare Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park. My Pal Chrisy, owned by Miller Racing LLC, scored wins in the Paseana Stakes, Musical Romance Stakes and Millions Distaff Preview Stakes at Gulfstream Park. REEVES THOROUGHBRED RACING the big 17-hand colt captured the Awesome Again Stakes (G1) by four and a quarter lengths. From that win, Ritvo trained Mucho Macho Man to the biggest win of his career. On November 2 at Santa Anita Park, Mucho Macho Man won the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in a thriller, besting Will Take Charge by a nose. He became the third Florida-bred to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, joining Unbridled (1990) and Skip Away (1997). With the winner’s share of $2,750,000, Mucho Macho Man padded his seasonal earnings total to $2,984,000. Named the 2013 Florida-bred champion older male, Mucho Macho Man also garnered the 2013 Secretariat Vox Populi Award. REEVES THOROUGHBRED RACING (Dean & Patti Reeves) led all owners by Florida-bred earnings with $2,984,000. That entire bankroll was earned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing’s big horse, Florida-bred Grade 1 stakes winner Mucho Macho Man. The Reeves purchased Mucho Macho Man privately as a two year old from his breeders John and Carole Rio. It was a short, sweet and lucrative season for Mucho Macho Man, a 2008 bay horse by Macho Uno out of the Ponche mare Ponche de Leona. After thirds in the Whitney Invitational Handicap (G1) at Saratoga and Criminal Type Stakes at Belmont Park, trainer Kathy Ritvo shipped her charge to Santa Anita Park. Mucho Macho Man took to the West Coast well, scoring the initial Grade 1 victory of his career. On September 28 at Santa Anita Park,

GILBERT G. CAMPBELL GILBERT G. CAMPBELL was named the 2013 Florida Breeder of the Year, leading all Florida breeders in four key categories. Campbell was the leading Florida breeder by Florida-bred earnings ($3,477,482), stakes winners (8), stakes wins (13) and wins (130). Since he and wife Marilyn established their Williston, Florida-based Stonehedge Farm South in 1988, Campbell’s 2013 Florida-bred earnings total was the most he has ever posted as a breeder. It was the third time he has recorded his all-time high of eight Florida-bred stakes winners. Scandalous Act headed Campbell’s class of 2013 eight Floridabred stakes winners. Scandalous Act became only the fourth filly to sweep all three races of the fillies division of the Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder. She joined the Nancy’s Glitter (1997), Aclassysassylassy (2004) and Awesome Feather (2010) as fillies who accomplished that feat. A 2011 bay filly by Act of Duty out Seductive Lady, by Langfuhr, Scandalous Act won the Desert Vixen Stakes, Susan’s Girl Stakes and My Dear Girl Stakes by a combined record-setting 22 lengths. The latter bested Awesome Feather’s combined winning margin of 17 lengths. Also raced by Campbell, Scandalous Act earned $328,000 on four wins in five starts.
