Aspectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff
At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION— Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands

American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors.
Grandstand should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course. COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump.
FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

Those Irish eyes $200,000 FEI Nations Cup D
arragh Kenny, Lorcan Gallagher, Kevin Babington, Conor Swail and Chef d’Equipe Robert Splaine took home top honors in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™, presented by Edge Brewing Barcelona, at HITS Ocala CSIO4* Feb. 13. Coming to Ocala with a strong squad, Team Ireland will leave the Sunshine State with another FEI Nations Cup™ title under their belts and their share of the $200,000 purse. A packed grandstand, sold out VIP accommodations and two live webcasts looked on as six nations – Canada, Colombia, the U.S., Mexico, Venezuela and Ireland – took their turns over a two-round competition course of 15 efforts set at 1.50m, designed by Martin Otto of Muenster, Germany. First of the 24 to show was Kenny riding Oakland Ventures LLC’s Picolo. They were quick to set the tone for the afternoon with a clean round right out of the gate.
“Thank you to Ocala for being such a wonderful city and host … extremely welcoming and professional.
”
—FEI First Vice President John Madden Luis Alejandro Plascancia and Caressini L of Mexico, Lauren Hough and Ohlala of the U.S., Andres Rodriguez and Verdi of Venezuela and Daniel Bluman and Conconcerto Apardi of Colombia chased Kenny’s success but all fell victim to penalties along the way. But then Yann Candele and Showgirl, owned by Watermark Group, made for a powerful debut for the Canadian team: The pair owned the second clear trip of the day, putting team Canada in the game. On deck, Ireland’s 23-year-old Gallagher, with Diktator van de Boslandhoeve, owned by Spy Coast Farm LLC and Shane Sweetnam, impressed in his first-ever FEI Nations Cup™ to give Ireland their second clear round.
Georgina Bloomberg and Gotham Enterprizes LLC’s Juvina of the U.S. entered the ring ninth and sailed through the obstacles free of faults to get the US team going. “When I knew I was coming here, we made this a priority. I wanted to have her peak here,” said Bloomberg of Juvina. Juan Pablo Betancourt of and Ilan Bluman of Colombia, Ian Millar and Eric Lamaze of Canada, Pablo Barrios of Venezuela jumped cleanly, as did Babington and Swail of Ireland, which left that team with zero total penalties as the first round came to a close. After the FEI Nations Cup™ scoring format was applied, dropping the highest penalty from each team, the standings going into the second round had Ireland, Colombia and Canada tied for first with zero faults, the USA and Venezuela tied for fourth with four faults and Mexico in sixth with 12 faults. The energy was high as the first seven competitors took a second turn on Otto’s course. It appeared that many of the horses lost respect for the water jump, clearing all the fences but touching the tape in the water, resulting in four faults. “The course designer did a fantastic job. The footing felt great. He was sympathetic in the first round and significantly tougher in the second round,” said Ireland’s Splaine. Of the three leading teams, Ireland was first to take the ring in Round 2 with Kenny facing eight penalties along the way to drop his team down the leaderboard. Next in, Bluman of Colombia improved from his first round trip of eight penalties with just four in the second round. Canada’s Candele followed and faced the same, keeping Colombia and Canada tied for the top spot. With eight to go and hoping to come back from teammate Lauren Hough’s second-round, fourpenalty attempt, Bloomberg and her 14-year-old gray Juvena were confident. The pair secured the first clean go of Round 2 and she was the only second-team rider to go clear, which moved the U.S. up the ranks, keeping Ireland, Colombia and Continued on next page

Canada at bay. Riding third for the U.S., Laura Kraut and Cherry Knoll Farm LLC’s Cedric saw a score of 15 penalties after Cedric tried to leave out a stride in the triple combination, resulting in downed rails on the third element and pushing the U.S. out of first. Babington and his mount, Shorapur, owned by Shorapur LLC, followed, clearing the course, again igniting a match for first between the U.S. and Ireland, with Canada and Columbia hot on their heels. “She’s a fighter. It’s her first Nations Cup and I’m very proud of her for two clean rounds. She doesn’t give up,” said Babington. The race was on for third as Bluman and Blue Star Investments & Mauricio Ga’s Exacto LS of Colombia saw nine faults and international champion Ian Millar, riding the Susan and Ariel Grange-owned Dixson for Canada, had four. Anchor for the U.S., Beezie Madden, aboard Abigal Wexner’s Simon, entered the ring 20th and defined American style with her second picturesque clear. Both Madden and Bloomberg provided double clean rounds leveraging the U.S. team to second place overall. “Thank God for Georgina and Beezie, who pulled us out of the pretty deep hole we put ourselves in in the first round,” said U.S. Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland. “These Nations Cups early in the year, when
you’re coming off a break, can have some unforeseen things happen and we certainly had a very interesting first round. “The footing was excellent, the weather was perfect but there’s a lot at stake. It’s the most money we’ve ever jumped for at a Nations Cup in the U.S. and those [Furusiyya] points are at stake. So sometimes funny things can happen. Madden added, “[Ocala] is a fresh place for us and it’s nice to go to a new venue. For classical jumping, for real sport, this is nice. For something that really counts, it’s nice to have this atmosphere.” Feeling pressure as the last attempt for the Irish and 22nd in the order, Swail, with the Susan and Ariel Grange-owned Grafton, delivered his next clear of the day, ultimately gaining a leg up on the competition for first place. Throughout his ride, Swail’s teammates were giddy with excitement at the thought of taking home the prize. “It was my horse’s first Nations Cup and it was same for Kevin’s, and it was Lorcan’s first time to ride a Nations Cup while Darragh Kenny was on his speed horse,” said Swail. “When you’re riding a good horse, and, having had a nice first round, I was trying to be smooth and do a similar job that she had already done. It felt very good. I didn’t have to work too hard and thankfully it all went really well.” Next to go, Roberto Teran Tafur and Ark Part-
ners LLC’s Woklahoma delivered Colombia’s only clear trip of the round, which was just what the team needed to finish with a competitive 12 total penalties. Depending on Canada’s final go, third could go either way. The final trip of the afternoon was Lamaze, aboard Zigali P S, owned by Artisan Farm LLC, who gave the Canadians a solid finish with four faults for 12 total penalties, resulting in a tie for third. According to FEI rules, if a tie for third occurs, the two Nations flip a coin to see who rides for the ribbons. Representing Fururisyya’s message of chivalry and good sportsmanship to the fullest, Canada opted to let their opponent ride, since it was Colombia’s first time in the top three. With four first-round penalties and 12 in the second, Venezuela took fifth place and Mexico made sixth with 28 total penalties. Dressed in signature Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ garb of sashes and coolers, Team Ireland galloped into the prize-giving ceremony beam-
ing with pride, welcomed by an applauding audience of equine enthusiasts, HITS exhibitors and Marion County residents. Many onlookers waved flags of the six nations represented. “Thank you to Ocala for being such a wonderful city and host – they were extremely welcoming and professional. A special thank you and well done to [HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri] and the rest of his staff. They were really great to work with,” said FEI First Vice President John Madden. Struzzieri said, “We were pretty excited here at HITS to get this opportunity. We only had a few months’ notice but obviously Furusiyya and Longines are great sponsors who offer so much support. “I leaned on the U.S. team and Robert [Ridland] as well. So we had a good support staff and are pretty happy with the results.” Swail capped it all off by saying of his team: “We’re four great lads, we always try to come prepared and we love jumping in the Nations Cups. We’re thankful it all went very well.” HCD

Kirk Webby, Brando Du Rouet Win the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix

star-studded 41 entries competed in the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix held in the picturesque Ocala Horse Properties Stadium. Kirk Webby from White House Station, N.J., came out on top of the lineup on Brando Du Rouet, owned by the Tolleshunt Investment Group. McLain Ward, Candice King, Aaron Vale, Tracy Fenney and others had multiple entries in the event, which was contested over Bernardo Cabral’s course of 16 jumping efforts, but only four came within the 83-second time allowed. The course was set at 1.50 meters and it took its toll on competitors, with rails falling throughout. The first of four to return for the jump-off was Candice King of Wellington, riding Bellissimo LLC’s Kismet 50. Knowing her competition, King took all the inside routes for the win until the back rail of the final oxer fell to give her four faults in a very fast

time of 49.314. This proved to be the fastest round with four faults, earning King second-place honors. Next up was McLain Ward of Brewster, N.Y., riding Double H Farm’s HH Ashley, who was second during the HITS Ocala Week II $50,000 Equine Couture/Tuff Rider Grand Prix. The Olympic Gold Medalist also took the inside routes, but an unfortunate rail at the second part of the combination cost him four faults in a time of 49.476 to place fourth. Third to jump off was Kama Godek of Fairfax, Va., riding her own Air Force One. The gray was rearing with excitement at the starting buzzer and galloped the course without slowing for the turns. The crowd sighed with disappointment when the final rail fell for four faults in a time of 49.387 to finish third. “I just needed to give one more half halt to the last fence,” said Godek who was happy with her ride. Last to go, and taking advantage of knowing just what he had to do to win, was Kirk Webby aboard Brando du Rouet. The pair rode slowly and carefully for the clear and the win, Rider Prize $ successfully completing the course with no jumping faults Kirk Webby $15,000 and just two time faults in a time of 56.047. Candice King $11,000 Kama Godek $6,500 “My strategy, once everyone had rails down, was just to go McLain Ward $4,000 clear – and I’m really happy for the people who own [Brando Jerome Navet $3,000 Du Rouet]. They have been really good to me,” said Webby. Dr. Fernando Cardenas $2,500 “The course was technical enough and I think it got the Amanda Flint $2,000 right result. My horse is by Baloubet du Rouet so he’s bred Peter Leone $1,500 Sulu Rose-Reed $1,500 to do this.” Laura Linback $1,000 Placing fifth was Jerome Navet on OnlyJumpers.com’s David Tromp $1,000 Sirius Brown, who had a clear jumping effort in the first Maryann Charles $1,000 round and just one time fault in a time of 83.889. No Mercy Callan Solem, VDL Wizard Win $50,000 Hits Grand Prix Over Challenging Course
C
ourse designer Danny Foster of Milton, Ontario, gave the entries in the Feb. 1, $50,000 Hits Grand Prix a daunting course of 17 efforts and a time allowed that took no mercy. Only two riders jumped clear within the allotted time to advance to the jump-off: winner Callan Solem on Horseshoe Trail Farm LLC’s VDL Wizard and Tracy Fenney on MTM Farm’s MTM Centano. Solem, of Glenmoore, Pa., had two rides in the class, and, as the seventh to attempt the course, she and VDL Wizard were the first to finish without a fault. It took 17 more entries before a jump-off was assured, when Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas, and MTM Centano also went clean. In the jump-off, Solem and VDL Wizard went beautifully and finished with a clear round in a time of 49.739 to put the pressure on Fenney. Fenney planned to leave out a stride between fence 6 and 7a, but her horse’s huge stride got her there too early and he had a

rail. Fenney chose to retire after the rail, and Solem claimed the victory with VDL Wizard while her other horse, VDL Torlando, finished fifth. Solem said of VDL Wizard, “I’m just so lucky to have this horse to ride. He’s such a special horse. It’s so nice on these winter circuits to have the opportunity to jump courses by different course designers. They all ask different questions and you come out with a really produced horse. I’ve had this horse since he was a 7-year-old but he’s really just gotten into top form in the last nine months or so. I knew he was ready for a win.” Fenney said, “I did the seven in the first round and planned the six in the jump-off. I put a little curve in it but not enough and got there too early and had the rail. He just covers so much ground.” MTM Centano’s owner, Mike McCormick of MTM Farm in Flower Mound, Texas, said, “It was a big hard class. A lot of lines you had to come back in. Some were long and flat, a couple were really tight. It provided a lot of questions and the questions always had to be answered by a really, really careful horse that had to be scopey. The slowdown five after the triple to the giant oxer really called on your horse’s scope.” Haley Gassel of Lenoir City, Tenn., riding Westwind Equine Training Center’s Quite Dark 2, finished with just one time fault but in a time of 91.244 in the first round to earn third place. Sulu Rose Reed from Mechanicsville, Va., riding her own Envy, went first in the class with no jumping faults but was also just over the time allowed for one-time fault in 91.559 seconds and fourth place. “I started out over the first three jumps a little slow. I was a little cautious on the turn from one to two,” she said. HCD

eb. 12 was Day Two of the international competition in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium and the day’s events were highlighted by the $34,000 FEI Prix, a qualifying opportunity for the $150,000 Ocala Grand Prix three days later. Excitement for the next day’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ certainly was already in the air and as it turned out Kevin Babington of the Irish Show Jumping Team, and Mark Q, co-owned with Deirdre Bourns, trumped the impressive list of entries, many of whom returned as contenders in the main event. There were 59 competitors jumping the Prix course of 15 efforts set at 1.50m, designed by Martin Otto of Muenster, Germany. Known speedster Pablo Barrios, of Wellington, aboard ZI Group Inc.’s Zara Leandra, entered the ring 11th in the order and they blazed clear with a time of 70.42 to move into first place. Barrios tipped his hat to the facility’s extraordinary footing for his quick round. “I’m very pleased with the mare. I think it’s the best I’ve felt with her this year. She feels very comfortable on this footing,” said Barrios. On top throughout the next 15 entries, Barrios was secure in first until the 2014 Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix winning duo of Todd Minikus, from Loxahatchee, and Quality Group’s Quality Girl took their chance at the win. Although clean, a slight hesitation at the last obstacle put Minikus just shy of Barrios with a time of 70.86. Babington and his bay mount followed the top two and, with the advantage of studying the 34 prior competitors, he knew his horse’s passion for galloping would play a starring role in the round. “I looked at a lot of the fast riders at the beginning and thought everybody is getting the same numbers in the regular lines,” said Babington. “The only place you could really make it up was to take a shot on the long gallop on both ends of the rings.” True to form, the pair sailed to a clean finish in a time of 69.44, one full second ahead of Barrios to steal the lead. Said Minikus, “I chickened out at the last jump and added a stride there. Pablo and Kevin were right on the pace so that was enough to put me in third.” Babington said, “The combination took a little bit of jumping and there were a good few places where you could gallop across the ring, which suited my horse. He’s an Irish sport horse, out of a thoroughbred mare, so he likes those long gallops. The footing felt super and when I trotted in the ring, I felt like I was on springs. My horse absolutely loved it and jumped well off it.” Babington was one of four riders representing Ireland in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup, presented by Edge Brewing Barcelona. Alex Granato and his own Gangsta – third in the order and winners of the $34,000 FEI Thursday Prix on Feb. 12 – chased the clock with hopes of taking home yet another FEI win from HITS Ocala CSIO4*. They were free of faults in a time of 65.71. “There were a lot more options on the strides down the lines,” Granato said. “If you wanted to leave out or if you knew your horse better and needed to add in, you could. For him [Gangsta], I had to stay slow down the line.” Devin Ryan on W.G.M. Veldman’s Cooper, and Molly Ashe riding Louisburg Farm’s Balous Day Date, both had clean rounds, although their times were not enough to top Granato. Having watched the eight previous riders closely, Waters zipped through the obstacles, leaving out a stride to the combination, giving her a fast finish of 64.01 and setting the Great American Time to Beat. “I think she [Qurint] was just really ready to go and excited to take me to the jumps, so the leave-outs were easy,” said Waters. “I did five to the wall and five to the Purina and six to the Edge Brewing and I just went as fast as I could to the last jump and I got lucky. “I went fast but there were so many other good riders going

I thought it would just be lucky if I stayed up there.” Entering the ring 23rd in order, Andre Rodriguez of Wellington, aboard Arao Enterprises LLC’s Cabalito, was next to give the leaders a run for their money. Ending just shy of the top two, Rodriguez went clean in a time of 65.95 to secure third place. “I was going after Alex. I’m riding the same horse in the Grand Prix so I tried to be as quick as possible and go after Alex’s time,” said Rodriguez. “The effort put into this show is really amazing. It’s pleasant to come to a show like this where the organization is try-
ing to please horses and riders,” added Rodriguez. “They are really thinking about the footing, starting at the right times, and the warmup is nice. Everyone that has come here really appreciates it.” Fresh off his team’s win in the FEI Nations Cup™, Ireland’s Kevin Babington, riding his and Deirdre Bourns’ Mark Q, was next in the lineup. Clear in a time of 66.08, Babington added a fourth-place finish to his already impressive list of accomplishments here. Fifth went to Ashe and Balous Day Date who finished clear in a time of 67.76. ourse designer Doug Russell of Ocala utilized the entire Ocala Horse Properties Stadium to create a challenging two rounds of hunter competition at HITS Ocala Week IV. Both the $1,500 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix and $10,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix courses included broken lines, long approaches and rollbacks. Thirty seven jumped the first round of the Devoucoux with the top 12 returning for a second attempt at the blue ribbon. The combined scores determined the winner with less than a point between the top two horses. Ocala native David Connors, aboard Karmin, a horse he co-owns with Bill Ellis of Four Winds Farm, was the winner with scores of 85 and 87 for a total of 172. Connors’ last-minute decision to show in the class proved to be the correct one as he walked out of the ring with a smile and the $2,800 purse. “This is her first time in the stadium,” Ellis said. “She was champion earlier in the week in the Green Conformation, after which we took her home and turned her out. I asked David if he wanted to show Karmin in the Hunter Prix and he said ‘Sure.’ We braided her up and here we are.” Connors said, “I had a blast riding in this ring. It was my first time and a great David Connors with Karmin after winning the $10,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix experience. Karmin was as calm as could be.” Hasbrouck Donovan of Gainesville rode her own Cymplify to a competitive first round score of 83.5. Nizri Survives Ricardo Nizri and Carvschka carve Cabral’s course to perfection in the $7,500 U-Dump/SJHOF Junior/Ametuer-Owner Jumper High

T
he Florida sun was shining bright above the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium Feb. 8 when 19 horses competed for $7,500 in prize money over Bernardo Cabral’s course of 15 jumping efforts set at 1.45 meters. The course proved difficult for many as only three were able to go clean and proceed to the jump-off. That number turned to one when Ricardo Nizri, on his gray Carvschka, was the only rider to complete the jump-off free of faults with a time of 46.475 seconds.
“I came along for the ride with the Mexican Team showing in the Nations Cup. I have never been to HITS Ocala before and I think it’s a very nice horse show,” said Nizri. “I didn’t expect the course to be so big and the class so competitive.” Melissa Rudershausen from Kennett Square, Pa., earned second place on Charmeur Ask with a four fault score in 37.695 seconds. Rudershausen was very pleased with her horse’s performance. “I thought my horse was always looking for the next fence so I was happy about that. He was right there where I wanted him to be,” said Rudershausen. “He just got a little quick and caught a rail in the second part of the combination.” Jared Petersen of Archer, Fla., riding his father’s Via Dolorosa, was third after an unfortunate stop at the first fence in the jump-off. “I was going for the leave-out to the first jump and I just doubted it. I changed my mind. I should have just kept going,” Petersen said. “I should have just had better pace coming to it and I would have been fine. I’m happy that he was clear in the first round.” Wellington native Nicole Bellissimo aboard Harley David was the fastest with four faults in the first round and a time of 73.599 to finish fourth. HCD

Linback was in the catbird seat, going last in the jump-off. No one had been clean yet, and Linback
rode slow and steady with Whitaker MVNZ to finish with no faults and clinch the win in 47.915 seconds. “It was just the luck of the draw,” Linback said. “With no one else clear I could nurse my way around. It’s been a great week here at HITS. I won the Medium Amateur Jumper Classic, too, for the second week in a row. My hunter was champion and I was f ifth in the SmartPak Grand Prix on Thursday with HH Dauphin.” Whitaker MVNZ (which stands for Mountain View, New Zealand) is a Dutch Warmblood, bred by Wendy Kedell, who imported his dam from Europe. She keeps track of his career with the Linbacks. Second place in the class went to Unique, owned and ridden by MacKenzie McGehee, of Jacksonville, with the fastest four-fault trip in 43.421. Third was Valentina 156 and Alex Parrish of Midway, Ky., also with four faults but just a touch slower in 46.660. Rounding out the top five was Via Dolorosa, owned by Derek Petersen and ridden by Jared Petersen of Archer, Fla., with eight faults and a fast time of 45.734 for fourth, and Quirant with Hayley Waters from Sparr, Fla., with16 faults and a time of 57.379 for fifth. isa Goldman of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., was on a hot streak at HITS Ocala Winter Circuit, winning the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome on Feb. 4 with Rocs to Riches and the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix on Feb. 5 with Morocco. There were 24 horse-and-rider combinations that attempted Bernardo Cabral’s course of 15 efforts set at 1.451.50 meters for the opportunity to take home their share of the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix prize purse. There were 12 riders who cleared first-round efforts and went on to the jump-off. “Every one of these horses is capable of being the winner. It just depends on whose day it is,” said onlooker Michael McCormick of MTM Farms. The jump-off was a footrace with all 12 taking short turns

and gallops at every available opportunity. The abbreviated course included Fences 1 and 2 with an optional inside turn to a vertical across the middle, which caused most of the faults. The course continued with a left roll back to the newly introduced Adequan jump and another left to the original Number 4 oxer. The finale included a line from 11a to 11b and a strong gallop to Fence 12. “It’s OK for me that a bunch went clean because my horse is a speedball,” said Goldman. “I‘ve really liked the courses so far this week. They ride really well. I love it here at HITS.” David Beisel on Call Me Hannes was first to go in the jump off and finished with four faults and a time of 43.424 to finish 10th. Next up was Lisa Goldman on Morocco, who took all the inside turns and encouraged her horse to go as fast as he could, ultimately setting the Great American Time to Beat at 39.474. There were 10 more riders who tried to catch Morocco’s time, including Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas. Fenney, fresh off her second-place finish in the HITS Ocala Week III $50,000 Grand Prix, came close, riding MTM Centano. She stopped the clock at 41.187 on the big strided bay, owned by MTM Farm, with a clean round and second place. Laura Linback of Mundelein, Ill., on Woodrun’s stallion HH Dauphin, had a clean jump off round with a time of 41.615 to finish third. Amanda Flint of Long Valley, N.J., riding The Coverboy Group’s Balotan, had a tidy clear in 42.134 for fourth place. Jerome Navet, nephew of World Champion Eric Navet,

riding OnlyJumpers.com’s Sirius Brown, was also clear in a time of 43.866 to finish fifth. The SmartPak Grand Prix was Navet’s first time showing in the U.S. Hunter Holloway of Topeka, Kan., had four faults on each of Hays Investment Corporation’s horses, finishing sixth on Any Given Sunday in a class-leading time of 38.310, and seventh with I Love Lucy in 40.523. Goldman already had three horses in the top six vying for the Brook Ledge Leading Rider Award at HITS Ocala, and she continued her reign returning to the winner’s circle again after the Brook Ledge Open Welcome, winning with her 8-year-old chestnut mare Rocs to Riches and placing third on Zacantos Z. There were 24 horses who competed over a course of 13 jumping efforts set between 1.4 and 1.45 meters, designed by Cabral, and 10 horses went clear in the first round with five clear in the jump-off. Goldman had two horses in the jump-off and finished third on her own Zacantos Z, who was clear in a time of 33.083. Kirk Webby from Whitehouse, N.J., finished second after holding the lead on Lisa Goldman aboard Morocco captures the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix Brando Du Rouet in a time of 32.951. Having already jumped clean on Zacantos Z, Goldman was ready to chase the clock with Rocs to Riches. The pair finished with a time of 32.011 for the win. “The course was great. It let you get in and built up as you went along,” said Goldman. HCD

I
t was a game of cat and mouse for Callie Smith of Bernardsville, N.J., in the $5,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic Medium. There were 26 competitors who took a go at the 1.35m course designed by Bernardo Cabral, but only 10 would return for the jump-off. Going first in the jump-off, Smith on Smithfield Farm’s Bigshot made all the inside turns and stopped the clock at 32.870. The next rider to go clear was Laura Linback from Mundelein, Ill., on Carmina, owned by Woodrun, who crossed the timer in 28.392 seconds to take the lead. Smith returned to the ring on her second horse, Upstaire, also owned by Smithfield Farms, and she successfully shaved a fraction off Linback’s time, finishing in 28.378 to set the new time to beat. Linback returned on her second horse, Catcher, also owned by Woodrun, but with a time of 29.232 she fell just short of the top two. Smith stacked the leaderboard with Upstaire taking home the blue ribbon and Bigshot fourth. The remaining six horses in the jump-off all had four faults and had to settle for fourth through 10th. Two riders with four faults from Round 1 received the final two ribbons. Smith rides with Devin Ryan of Long Valley, N.J., who trained three of the 10 horses in the jump-off. Ryan’s team has won the Medium Classic Weeks 1, 2 and 4. “I liked the courses this week and I want to thank my parents and my team for all their support,” said Smith, who placed first and second in the Medium classes earlier this week. Linback said, “Carmina is just a faster horse [than Catcher]. She’s a Ferrari. I can’t be disappointed to be second because she won the last two weeks.” HCD
