t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but I just don’t get it. If, while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps notso-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.
WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 27
ESI PHOTO
Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part
of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course.
COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump. FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a
ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

Thriller
Williston’s Vale and Quidam’s Good Luck edge past Goldman and Centurion B
OCALA – he Sunday Grand Prix at HITS Ocala get better and better. The competition between Lisa Goldman of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., and hometown hero Aaron Vale of Williston is heating up and the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix had the crowd screaming for their favorite pick to win. There was no shortage of excitement as Andrew Kocher of Lake St. Louis, Mo., had the crowd on their feet to the final fence. In a thrilling jump-off, Vale and Quidam’s Good Luck, owned by Troy Glaus, wowed the crowd as they squeaked by Goldman, riding Mary Goldman’s Centurion B, by two-tenths of a second for the win. Vale also finished third on Finou 4, a horse he co-owns with Don Stewart. Andrew Kocher on his own Le Conte placed fourth and Goldman was back again in the top five with her own Rocs to Riches for fifth-place. Course designer Martin Otto, of Muenster, Germany, set a

demanding track of 16 efforts set at 1.55 meters for the 35 starters. Time was a factor, and even with an adjusted time allowed of 81 seconds, 10 riders had time faults in the first round. Eight had clear rounds, including all three of Vale’s rides, and both of Goldman’s mounts.. First to test the shortened course was Catuso, owned by Blue Gate Farm, LLC, and ridden by Denise Wilson of Dousman, Wisc. Catuso jumped in beautiful form and took no risks, opting for a fault-free, 48.792. Next up was Vale riding Finou 4. Vale navigated the bigstrided Hanoverian through a tight turn from the first to the second fence, and an inside turn to the Brook Ledge fence, to cut eight full seconds off Wilson’s time, setting the Great American Time to Beat of 40.189 seconds. Amanda Flint, of Long Valley, N.J., and VDL Wittinger were up next but had a rail at the combination after making a very tight turn. They finished with four faults in a time of 42.645 seconds, ultimately earning them seventh-place. Goldman moved up in the order while Vale changed horses and threw down the gauntlet on the 14-year-old Centurion B, owned by her mother and trainer, Mary Goldman. They left out a stride in the long gallop across the ring to the last fence, finishing in an astonishing 38.993 seconds for the lead. Vale returned on his second horse, Spirit of Alena, owned by his Thinkslikeahorse, but took back after a rail, finishing in 44.778 for eighth. Goldman followed on her youngster, Rocs to Riches, to finish clean in 41.780 seconds for fifth place. Two remained to go, with Goldman and Centurion B still hanging on to the lead in 38.993 seconds. Vale returned with his third ride in the jump-off, Quidam’s Good Luck. “This is a quick footed horse and I went in with the idea that I had nothing to lose. I’ve ridden some fast classes but that was a lot of speed,” Vale said, referring to Goldman’s all-out time. “I just kept kicking and went like I was getting chased.” His turn from the first to the second fence in six strides might have been the difference and he finished in 38.704 to take the lead. “In hindsight, if I had gotten the six strides from 1 to 2 on my

first horse [Finou 4], he would have been faster. It felt like a smooth pretty ride and really my most fun of the day,” Vale said. Andrew Kocher and Le Conte stepped in as the final horse to contest the jump-off. In what can only be described as a flat out gallop he made a great turn from 1 to 2 and left out as many as 3 strides to fence 3, but missed the inside turn to the Brook Ledge fence. Trying to make up the time, he continued at his breakneck pace to the last fence, to finish clear in 40.662 for third-place. In a roundup of the class, Vale said the speed displayed by the top three as they tried to catch each other was outrageous. “My third horse – that was just crazy! But it worked. It was a great class for the crowd to watch.” HCD

Thirty-four horses and riders took on the challenging 1.50-meter course set by course designer Oscar Soberon of Dallas. A tight time allowed of 85 seconds in the first round kept the riders on a fast track if they wanted to go clean. First to go clean and meet the time-allowed challenge successfully was Goldman on her first ride with Morocco. Andrew Welles of Port St. Lucie, riding Shining De Reve, owned by AEM Enterprises LLC, was the next to jump clear in the first round, just within the time allowed. Goldman returned with her second mount, Rocs to Riches, to produce a third to advance to the jump-off. Four more joined the group to contest the shortened course: Brandie Holloway of Topeka, Kan., riding Lucky Strike, owned by Hays Investment Corporation; class winner Douglas and S&L Elite; Chopping on Basje, and Christoph Schroeder of Andersonville, Tenn., riding Catungee, the winner of the Ocala I $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix. The first element of the triple was removed and the course was set for the jump-off with Goldman and Morocco returning first. They started at a breakneck pace, steadying only in one spot after the combination, stopping 36.801 seconds.Next up was Welles and Shining Du Reve who had two rails for eight faults in a time of 45.154. Holloway and Lucky Strike moved up in the order, in their attempt to catch Goldman, they left out a stride to the skinny vertical at the last fence. While the gamble meant they had the time, in 36.402, they also had the rail, finishing with the fastest four-fault trip to be fourth. The big chestnut S&L Elite and Douglas took on the course with a plan to leave out strides wherever possible. Indeed, their plan worked, as they took over the lead in 36.194 seconds. Goldman returned with Rocs to Riches but had a rail at the combination, finishing in 37.523 to finish fifth. Two remained in the jump-off. Chopping and Basje left out a stride in two places to finish in 36.320 seconds, just two-tenths of a second behind

He’s the first horse I’ve ever had at this level,” said Douglas. “Mike kept telling me, ‘Take the step out everywhere, if the jump comes down then it comes down, but try to win,’ I think he jumped even better in the jump-off than in the first round.” Forty riders who have competed in at least three Sunday Grand Prix

The 14-year-old equestrian clocked in with a time of 37.561 seconds horse is the bomb,” said Moggre. “I’ve been riding her for almost a over Haley Gassel’s time of 37.940 seconds in a head-to-head jump-off year. She was a sale horse and super green and young but when she for the win. Melissa Ruderhausen of Kennett Square, Pa., and started to do so well I took her over and we decided to keep her.” It was certainly a good day for riders of MTM Farms and trainer Charmeur Ask, was the fastest with four faults in a time of 74.526 for Mike McCormick of Flower Mound, Texas. Both Moggre and Dorothy third-place. Juniors and amateurs tried their best to defeat Soberon’s 1.45-meter Douglas, winner of the $50,000 Equioxx Grand Prix, ride and train course. It proved to be a difficult task as rider after rider collected four with McCormick. HCD faults, many of which were at the oxer-vertical combination at 9A and 9B. Third in the order was Gassel, of Lenoir City, Tenn., on Quite Dark 2, owned by Westwind Equine Training Center. Their clear round looked like it might be the only one, until the last rider of the first-round, Moggre, came in on the diminutive MTM Flutterby. The striking chestnut with the flaxen mane never touched a rail, insuring a two horse jump-off. Gassel returned for the jump-off and pulled out all the stops with a tight roll-back to Fence 8, where Quite Dark 2 made an extra effort to be clear before galloping home in the Great American Time to Beat of 37.940 seconds.Only one rider stood between Gassel and the win. Moggre and MTM Flutterby kicked out in exuberance between the first two fences in the jump-off, losing some time to the clock, but after the combination, they kicked into turbo drive to stop the clock just a fraction faster for the win. “He who touches the reins the least wins! Andrew Kocher from Lake St. Louis, Mo., took charge in the Brook Ledge Welcome Stake: He not only won the class on his Rooney IV, but was also third-place with Prof de la Roque, owned by Postagestamp Farm, LLC, and took fifth-place with his own Le Conte. Rooney IV and Kocher were the next to try the jump-off track. Kocher chose to gallop around the gazebo for a longer route but never took back, taking over the lead with a time of 39.933 seconds. A few trips later, Kocher returned to the ring and was doubleclear again, this time on Prof de la Roque. He went around the gazebo again but cut inside and out to the last fence. Though certainly not a surprise, it is still always amazing to see our in-state thoroughbred industry numbers in terms of how they fit with and relate to Florida’s economy. A recent 2013 conservative study conducted by nationally acclaimed pari-mutuel and gaming economists Cummings & Associates of horse breeds from the pari-mutuel industry based in the Sunshine State provided a handful of very impressive equine economic impacts including:
■ $1 billion per year of Economic Impact ■ More than $400 million expended per year in local salaries and payroll taxes ■ More than 12,000 jobs ■ An annual economic impact state-wide far in excess of coveted baseball spring training

They shaved time off the clock, taking an extremely tight turn after a vertical to the last bending line. The crowd awed as Pratt and the powerful bay thundered towards the finish. Concorde rubbed the rail at the second-to-last fence, but by fate’s design it did not fall: They clocked in at 40.104 seconds to take the lead. Last in the order was Cook and Basimodo. They sped towards the finish, conquering fence by fence with the crowd on the edge of their seats to witness who would claim the title. They crossed the timers in a fault-free 40.643 seconds, just a fraction behind Pratt for second-place.
tical secured second-place for Pratt; he then retired from the course. Fourth-place in the class was Delaney Flynn of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Quite Quick, owned by Irish Rose Stables. They finished the first round as the fastest of the four-faulters in 77.686 seconds. Finishing fifth was Tamie Phillips and Cat Balou. They crossed the timers just behind Flynn in 77.803 with four jumping faults. HCD
Cabral set a formidable course in the Wilmington Trust Grand Prix. The well-represented class of riders from the United States, Mexico, Egypt, France and Mexico tried the course that tested the skills of each horse and rider. Many valiantly ridden rounds went, but after 10 trips, spectators were still waiting for the first clear round. The 16-effort course included several bending lines, challenging oxers and a triple combination mid-course that began with a triple bar. With no clear round to speak of, the course seemed to be untamable until French equestrian Eric Navet, entered the ring to prove that the course could be conquered. Navet, now riding out of Panileuse, Calif., and Catypso, owned by Signe Ostby, navigated the course with confidence, setting the standard halfway through the order of go. Three more challenged the course, but none could keep the rails up until Lisa Carlsen of Okotoks, Alberta and her own Parette. They powered through the course without any jumping faults, clearing fence after fence as anticipation rose from the crowd. Clean over the last fence, whistles turned to sighs as they crossed the timers in 81.096 seconds, just a fraction over the time allowed of 81 seconds. The effort ultimately landed them third-place. A jump-off did not seem to be on the horizon as the order winded down but Chris Pratt changed that. Last to test the course, the equestrian from Lake View Terrace, Calif., and Indigo Farm’s Cruise, went clear in the first round to make it two for the jump-off. Navet and Catypso returned first to contend for the win. The shortened course required weaving through other fences to make it to the mid-course combination that included a triple bar to a vertical. They clocked in at a faultfree 40.144 seconds. Pratt had one final chance to claim the class from Navet. Waste Management That Won’t Bug You
E
ach New Year holds great promise and new ideas can be the start of something fantastic. When old ideas are looked at in new ways, or from other angles, potential solutions sometimes present themselves. Waste and manure management solutions have been studied and applied for many years, resulting in different ideas and so-called solutions. Waste and compost-eating bugs, fungi and bacteria have not often been considered in the past, but are nonetheless vital to nature’s recycling. Researchers are now starting to realize and reconsider the amazing benefits that waste-eating bugs can provide manure management, composting, etc. These bugs have literally been “eating up” the problem forever! Several different types of “creepy crawlies,” while all seemingly disgusting, are also very efficient and essential for this natural cycle. Bugs that feed on dead stuff, scientifically called saprophagous, are truly nature’s great cleaners. Black Soldier Flies and Dung Beetles are just two varieties. Other bugs, including sow bugs, centipedes and millipedes, don’t specifically eat waste, but play an important role in compost improvement and development. These bugs can be found all over the world feeding on raw manures, compost, decaying vegetation and mulch. Black Soldier flies are native to the southeastern states and throughout the Western Hemisphere. Often associated with outdoors and livestock, they can normally be found around decaying organic matter (such as animal waste or plant material). Because the Black Soldier larvae consume decaying matter, they have been used with some success to reduce animal manure in commercial swine and poultry facilities. The fly prepupae will actually crawl themselves out of the manure once they are ready to mate, making a system fairly straightforward for swine and poultry operations. Dung Beetles are another variety of nature’s great recycling insects that, not surprisingly, feed on manure. There are three varieties of the Dung Beetle; tunnellers, rollers and dwellers; the last variety actually lives directly in the manure and feces. Amazingly industrious and workmanlike creatures, their brightly colored bodies have digging limbs, fighting shields and elongated backs to hold manure balls. In ancient Egypt, the Rainbow Scarab beetles (aka Dung beetle) were
actually worshipped, with the more amazing varieties even being fashioned into jewelry. They can be found on every continent except Antarctica and have played an important role in worldwide pasture ecosystems. Pillbugs, often called Roly-Poly bugs, are well known and something children often play with them outside. These are the common little gray bugs that roll up in a tight ball when disturbed. These interesting creatures are most commonly found in the compost piles, leaf litter and mulch. While not an actual manure-eating insect, they are considered to be a variety of the decomposer fauna, meaning that this insect will return organic matter (i.e. decomposing manure) to the soils. Amazingly, Pillbugs and also Sowbugs are excellent in heavy metal removal [including zinc, lead and copper] from soils, which results in ultimate removal from ground water. This makes millipedes and Sowbug “shredder” arthropods very essential to preserve soil/water health. Spiders and other arthropods dramatically also assist the waste-eating and organic matter decomposition processes. Ranging in size from the microscopic to long-legged spiders, a single square yard of soil can contain from 500 to 200,000 individual arthropods. Although some plant-feeding arthropods can become pests, they are primarily needed to tackle organic wastes and enhance soils. At the beginning of this New Year, try to appreciate the importance of the “creepy” insects and critters that, although seemingly disgusting, are vital to the health of soil and essential to the waste management process. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or your local extension agent to learn more about waste-eating bugs, improved manure management and farm practices, or to schedule a free, non-regulatory farm visit. As always, keep up the good management practices! ■

in the Family Purina-Backed Rider Wins Purina Grand Prix was over, the team to beat was Purina-sponsored rider Rich Fellers of Sherwood, Ore., and his mount, Lux Lady, owned by Harry and Mollie Chapman of Wilsonville, Ore. Second-place went to Eric Navet riding from Panileuse, Calif., and Catypso, owned by Signe Ostby. Los Angeles rider, Chris Pratt, took home third-place with Edesa’a Basantos, owned by Edesa Horse Promotions Inc. First into the Grand Prix Stadium for the jump-off was Susie Hutchison of Temecula, Calif., and Ziedento, owned by St. Bride’s Farm. Hutchison put down a fast, clear jump-off round galloping through the timers in 43.097 seconds to set the tone for the jump-off field of eight. Next to test the shortened course was Jenn Serek of Calgary, riding her own Okapi De Printemps. Serek navigated the course with ease but could not capture the lead as they crossed the timers in 49.520 seconds. Jill Henselwood and Harley Brown both had four faults. Henselwood ultimately earned seventh and Brown was eighth. Pratt and Edesa’s Basantos entered the jump-off next to reignite the streak of clear jump-off rounds. They jumped fault-free to claim the temporary lead, crossing the timers in 40.410 seconds. Fellers and Lux Lady entered the jump-off second-to-last. Fellers sped through the jump-off to finish in a speedy 39.052 seconds, where the lead would remain. Navet and Catypso moved through the jump-off beautifully and quickly. As Navet cleared the final obstacle, he fell behind Fellers by a fraction of a second, crossing the marker in 39.505 for second-place. The top 5 on the leader board was finalized with Hutchison’s round for fourth-place and Serek’s round for fifthplace. “After a year off for Lady Lux because of an injury, I could have not asked of anything more from her. She felt super,” said Fellers. “It was also very special to me that Purina not only sponsors me and my horses, but also sponsored this Grand Prix with that amount of prize money.”

Clearing the fences seemed to be the challenge of the day, but seven horses and riders conquered the first-round course to advance to the jump-off. First to return to the ring was Beverly Hills, Calif., equestrian Gavin Brodin and Allstar 5, owned by No. 44 Sport Horses, LLC. Brodin navigated the shortened course smoothly until his mount refused the vertical that served as a prelude to the home-stretch combination. They finished with four jumping faults and four time faults, totaling eight faults in 59.997 seconds.
